Virginia news | university of virginia expels 1 fraternity and suspends 3 others over hazing concerns.
CHARLOTTESVILLE (AP) — Concerns about hazing have prompted the University of Virginia to terminate one local fraternity and suspend three others on its Charlottesville campus, the school said Wednesday.
The university said in a statement that the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter had “engaged in serious hazing behavior .” The school said it decided to terminate its fraternal organization agreement following an investigation.
Disciplinary action also has been initiated against individual students for their alleged involvement in hazing, the university said.
The school did not elaborate on the allegations or the findings against the chapter. It said details will be posted in the coming weeks on a university webpage that publishes reports of hazing misconduct.
Pi Kappa Alpha did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment. The Daily Progress and other news outlets reported that Justin Buck, executive vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha national, confirmed the chapter was expelled for a minimum of four years.
Buck said the fraternity members there were an “embarrassment” and that they “sullied and degraded” the organization’s good name, The Daily Progress reported.
“This action was taken following the confirmed abhorrent and detestable hazing activities by individuals,” Buck said.
Theta Chi said in a statement that its staff members have been in contact with university administrators and chapter leadership and are gathering facts.
“Theta Chi does not tolerate hazing as it runs directly contrary to its mission of developing Resolute Men and has no place within the fraternity experience,” the organization said in a statement.
The national organizations for the other chapters did not respond to emails seeking comment.
“The university does not tolerate hazing activity,” the school said, “and we act quickly to investigate and pursue necessary disciplinary action when reports are made.”

Federal officials tour newly online Richard Mine AMD treatment Plant
Rachel Pell | Thursday, April 25, 2024
MORGANTOWN – The new Richard Mine acid mine drainage treatment plant began operation last week, and on Monday, officials from the U.S. Department of Interior and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement toured the site in advance of a special DOI announcement (see companion story).
“This pretty much will help restore the lower end of the watershed,” Jonathan Knight, with the state Department of Environmental Protection Office of Abandoned Mine Lands told the officials.
Knight gave a brief history of the mine and the efforts to get the plant built, culminating in a Natural Resources Conservation Service partnership with the DEP to get it built. The DEP’s Office of Special Reclamation helped design the site.
AML’s Travis Parsons led the tour, which began at the mine portal manhole where the mine water previously flowed down a concrete trench into Deckers Creek. Above the channel, the water was clear, below it the water was orange.
Now, he showed the group, the water is diverted off to the right (in the downstream direction) and underground through a 12-inch line into a manhole, then to another manhole – the metering manhole – where the water flow is measured before heading into the plant. At the moment it was just over 900 gallons per minute.
The plant crew uses the flow rate to determine some aspects of treatment, he said.
Inside the plant, the water heads over toward the big solo to bring the pH up so it’s no longer acid. Hydrated lime comes down from the silo and is mixed with water to create a lime slurry that is pumped to rapid mix tanks to join the mine water.
The water heads to the flocculators, where the suspended solids are aggregated into larger clumps called flocs. From there, the water goes to the two clarifying pools. The visitors looked down into the pools to see plumes of brown sludgy water flowing in.
In the clarifiers, the sludge settles out and gets pumped to two huge geotube bags situated outside at the edge of the plant. The now-clean water gets pumped back into the creek – through a new channel downstream of the old one.
Parsons led the group into motor control center – the brains of the plant, he called it. A computer server sits inside a gray metal cabinet and the monitor allows the operator to scroll through various screens and see every piece of equipment and make adjustments. Operators will also be able to access this screen from their cellphones and iPads and laptops and make adjustments remotely.
The Richard Mine Complex, Knight told the group, will also become the central hub to remotely control other AMD sites.
“With the exception of this plant, all of our systems are very primitive,” he said. They have a contract to replace six systems with fully automated systems that will all communicate with this one. They expect to have the sites upgraded and tied in within the next two to three years.
DEP also has stream restoration projects planned for downstream on Deckers Creek. Among them: Farther downstream, the Rock Forge mine on the other side across W.Va. 7 is dumping into the creek and saturating backyards and basements of homes along the road.
An orange-colored wet spot crossing the road shows where the mine is draining. They plan to capture the runoff from it and pump it back to the Richard plant for treatment.
And further upgrades are planned for the complex, he told them. Existing buildings will be upgraded and used for storage and equipment. They plan to pave the gravel parking lot. And the whole site will be fenced off for security.
A third clarifier, in an attached building, is not yet online. This one will be used for extracting rare earth elements – a project tied to WVU Water Research Institute’s rare earth element production project. The extracted material will be formed into a preconcentrate and then shipped to a central facility for processing and refining into rare earth metals...

ODU Receives $200,000 from SCHEV to Alleviate Financial Barriers of Internships and for Research
By Kenya Godette
The Old Dominion University Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office was awarded $200,000 in grant funding from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to supplement associated costs of unpaid internships and to enhance research on student internship experiences.
Funding was awarded in two $100,000 grants from the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) in collaboration with the Virginia Chamber Foundation. This partnership aims to connect Virginia businesses offering work-based learning opportunities with students, signifying a concerted effort to stimulate partnerships between public universities and commercial organizations.
“These grants represent a significant investment in the future workforce of Virginia,” said Barbara Blake, executive director for the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office. “This $200,000, in addition to the recently awarded $5 million Mellon Foundation grant that provides internship support to humanities majors, underscores our unwavering commitment to advance work-based learning statewide.”
The first award is a $100,000 Institutional Award for Student Internship Support Grant. Funds will be used to address financial obstacles that students encounter when participating in internships by providing stipends for unpaid opportunities, transportation costs, professional attire, housing and necessary materials for internship preparation.
Students can apply for Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 internship support in May.
The second $100,000 award is from the Institutional Internship Data Collection Grant, a statewide initiative that assists higher education institutions in collecting, compiling and reporting data on student internship experiences. With this funding, the office will incentivize students to enroll in zero-credit, tuition-free courses that allow the University to track student internship experiences.
“There are many students at the University who engage in great internships but, unfortunately, ODU may not know about their work,” Blake said. “Some students don’t need a credit bearing course to complete their major, so there is no reason for them to report their internship experiences to us—hindering our ability to collect data.”
This grant will also provide an incentive to students who participate in data collection events and programs that the internship office will offer.
Through the strategic utilization of these grants, the Monarch Internship and Co-Op Office aims to ensure equitable access to high-quality internship opportunities for all ODU students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Crime scene simulations connect students with local, federal law enforcement

Liberty University Helms School of Government hosted its annual “Pig on the Mountain” crime scene simulation exercise on Friday, providing students with the chance to gain real-world forensic experience while building relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement.
The all-day event included morning lecture sessions on arson and explosives investigations as well as body excavation and forensic entomology, before students practically applied this knowledge in afternoon crime simulations conducted with pig cadavers.
Participating agencies included the Amherst County, Bedford County, and Campbell County Sheriff’s Offices as well as Lynchburg Police Department, Chesterfield Police Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia State Police Bomb Squad, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The morning’s events included demonstrations on a terrorist bomb threat imitating the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and a vehicle arson resulting in a homicide.
“It’s about as real world as you can actually be, and that’s a really good thing,” said government professor Larry Presley, who spent 21 years with the FBI. “There’s nobody else doing this event anywhere in the United States. (These simulations) are extraordinarily realistic and to have all these resources and all of these people to volunteer their time to come here and fill our students with their knowledge and expertise is extraordinary.”
In the afternoon, students broke off into groups and analyzed one of eight different crime scene simulations. These included pig cadavers in different stages of composition as well as the scenes of both the arson and explosive demonstrations. Students were coached through how to approach a crime scene and search for evidence.
Joseph Coy (’16), a Liberty alumnus and current Chesterfield police officer, participated in the first Pig on the Mountain as a senior before graduating and taking his current job. He has facilitated the event for two years.
“It is a humbling and full-circle experience to see the program grow,” he said.
Over 50 Liberty students participated, including many studying criminal justice , forensic science , and Unmanned Aircraft Operations (flying drones).
Senior Lea Encarnation served as a student leader and coordinator for this year’s event. After participating last year, she said she wanted to play a larger role.
“It’s amazing how all of (the students) can now have this hands-on experience on a crime scene,” she said. “With that in mind, it does set us apart from other universities because Liberty has provided that beautiful hands-on experience while also training us to be Champions for Christ. That is a really good combination.”
She also noted that as a Christian, her goal and that of the other students should be to pursue truth and justice and that they are doing just that through homicide investigations.
Senior Megan Slaubaugh, who is who is studying criminal justice – advance investigative studies and psychology and pursuing a job in the corrections and juvenile detention field, said the simulation encouraged students to exercise their faith in the field.
“In situations like this where there is a homicide investigation, we know that through all of this we are doing this because we love God and love people. Through this, we have faith, hope, and joy,” she said.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58 on Thursday in the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club to tie the Korn Ferry Tour record for relation to par and match the second-lowest score in tour history.
Capan played an eight-hole stretch in 9 under, making an eagle on the par-5 ninth and following with seven straight birdies. He two-putted for par on the par-4 17th, then hit into a fairway bunker on the par-5 18th and ended up saving par with a 7-foot putt.
“Whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could,” Capan said. “I know this course might be gettable the next few days, so just tried to get as many as I could.”
Cristobal Del Solar shot the lowest round in Korn Ferry Tour history with a 13-under 57 in February in the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia. There have been 13 sub-60 rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour, six in the last 370 days
The 58 broke the course record of 59 set by Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in a casual round with friends on May 3, 2020.
“When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage,” Capan said.
The 24-year-old Capan, making his 31st Korn Ferry Tour star, played at the University of Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast He previously shot 59 in the final round of a high school state championship
“I shot 59 before, so I thought, you know, may as well break that,” Capan said. “It was a lot of fun out there. After the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at.”
Trent Phillips was second after a 61. Tim Widing, the winner of the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, had a 62.
The wind gusted to 30 mph on the mostly cloudy day, with a high temperature of 78.
