Sharing is caring!

Visiting a theme park like Universal Studios is so much fun and exciting but it can be chaos if you go in with no plan. With the rising cost of… well, everything these days it can be stressful to plan a vacation of any kind but when you are planning around something like a theme park that will require tickets to enter, food, and so much more you want to make sure that you are saving every dollar that you can, that you plan your trip to make sure you get your money’s worth, and that everything goes as smooth as it possibly can.

After reading this article, you’ll be armed with all of my favorite Universal Orlando tips that you need for an amazing trip! I’ll cover everything starting with considerations as you book your trip to Universal Studios Florida to how to save money and maximize your experience in the park.

Where to Stay at Universal Orlando – Tips to Decide

Pool at Hard Rock Hotel Orlando with tweens

If you plan on at least two days at Universal Studios, consider staying at an on-property hotel. They’re extremely convenient and most of them offer perks specific to Universal Orlando resort guests.

The best perks – Unlimited Express Pass and Early Access – are reserved for folks staying at Hard Rock Hotel , Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort . All three are walking distance to the theme parks, which makes it even easier to take advantage of your early park admission. You might even have the Wizarding World of Harry Potter all to yourself!

If you’re looking themed hotel rooms at Universal Studios in Orlando, these Premier Hotels are where you’ll find them as well. These suites all sleep up to 5 people in two separate spaces.

  • Hard Rock Hotel – Future Rock Star Suites
  • Loews Portofino Bay Hotel – Despicable Me Kid’s Suites
  • Loews Royal Pacific Resort – Jurassic World Kid’s Suites

The downside of Premier Hotels is that they’re really expensive, starting around $400 per night but sometimes as much as $800 per night. But with four Unlimited Express Passes per room (including the day you check in and the day you check out) it might be worth it since those passes start at $130 each for park-to-park visitors.

Lots of people do a “split stay” – one night at a Universal Premier hotel, followed by a few nights at a mid-priced Disney World hotel like Pop Century or Art of Animation . Following that strategy also lets you avoid the extra expense of renting a car – you’ll just need to takeUbers to and from the airport and one between Universal and Walt Disney World.

One of the best Universal Orlando resort tips? To get a Premier room and all its benefits for free, you can apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and use the sign up bonus – worth at least $750 depending on the current promotion – to book through the Ultimate Reward portal. Small business owners can level up by also applying for the Chase Ink Business Preferred card , with a bonus worth $1500 when combined with the Sapphire Reserve.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort pool at Universal Studios Orlando

If you’re not worried about the Express Passes or themed rooms, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort is a good Universal hotel option at a reasonable price point. You’ll still get Early Park Admission one hour before regular park opening, though you’ll have to take the free shuttle bus or walk 20 minutes to the entrance.

The design choices are fun and lively and when you aren’t at the parks you can dive in to the fantastic pool area (complete with waterslide and lazy river) or enjoy on-site bowling! Cabana Bay offers everything from standard rooms up to 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom suites that sleep up to 8 people . Check available room types for your dates.

For those who would rather stay at an amazing off-property hotel that the whole family will love, check out the JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes . This newly renovated, ultra-luxe hotel will satisfy high-end hotel lovers. There’s a big brand new water park – just take a look at these photos to see how amazing it looks. Because it’s a little removed from the theme park areas, the JW sits on over 500 acres and has plenty of outdoor areas to explore including ecotours, falconry, fishing and more. The JW Studio has video games, foosball, ski ball, air hockey and more. It’s about a 15 minute drive to Universal Studios Orlando theme parks.

Tips for Universal Orlando Vacation Booking

voyage a universal studio orlando

Planning is essential when it comes to a successful trip, the more you are planned and prepared for – the more success you will have. Try some of these planning tips when it’s time for you to start planning your Universal Studios trip.

  • Start Planning Early: When it comes to something like Universal Studios, you will want to start planning relatively early. I recommend planning about 6 months to 1 year prior to when you are planning on going. This allows you to time to save the money necessary for your trip as well as booking all of the necessary reservations such as hotel, park tickets, and more.
  • Check the Crowd Calendar: When it comes to picking when you want to take your visit, check on the crowd calendar to see peak times to avoid. Universal Orlando lines can be brutal and the park gets extremely busy during peak seasons such as the summer and holiday seasons. Unless you are visiting for a specific occasion, try to plan to visit during the off-season where you may have a less stressful visit and see more of the Universal Orlando resort. Our recent visit on a Monday in mid-October saw very manageable crowds, and many visitors have had success on weekdays in late August and through September.
  • Weigh a Multi-Day Trip vs a Park to Park Ticket: One of the first decisions you’ll have to make as you plan your visit to Universal Orlando is whether you should choose a multi-day ticket or a park to park ticket – or you may want to choose a multi-day park to park ticket! There are two Universal Orlando parks within the Universal Studios Florida property as well as a seasonal water park, Volcano Bay. You’ll have to evaluate in advance what you want to do at Universal Studios in the context of all the other things to do in Orlando . If you want to do absolutely everything , a two or three day park to park ticket may be the right fit. On the other hand, if you don’t like thrill rides or are visiting with small children then a one day park to park ticket should do the trick. Why am I specifically recommending park to park tickets over single-park tickets? The Hogwarts Express connects the two parks through the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and it’s only available with park to park tickets. Don’t buy a single park ticket and then be disappointed! Unlike Walt Disney World , the two main parks at Universal Orlando are an easy walking distance apart so it’s feasible to hop back and forth multiple times per day. There’s also no specific time at which you’re allowed to switch parks. We bounced around several times without issue.

  • Know Ride Height Requirements: If you are traveling with younger children, this is an important thing to note. Many of the Universal Studios rides are more intense, both aesthetically and physically, than those at Disney World and have a minimum height requirement. It’s a good idea to check out height requirements prior to visiting the park so you have an idea of what may work for your family and what may not – petite families like ours simply don’t have access to all of the rides, and knowing those limits may help you decide how many days to spend at Universal Studios. One ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure requires riders to be 54″!

Universal Studios Tricks Shortly Before You Visit & At the Parks

voyage a universal studio orlando

  • Arrive at the Park Early: If you want to get a jump start on things you will want to arrive to the park early. If you’re staying off-property, you’ll park in the same parking structures that are used for Universal CityWalk and then go to the security pavilion, after which you walk through City Walk to the park entrances. Those security lines can get long! We arrived in the parking structure a little after the 8am opening and it took around 15 minutes to get into the park; by that time there was already a 30 minute wait for our first ride. If you wait until 9am or later to arrive, plan on even longer to get If you’re staying at one of the Universal hotels, you’ll be allowed to arrive one hour before park opening. Be sure to take advantage of that, as you should be able to experience a lot before the real crowds arrive.

voyage a universal studio orlando

  • Download the Universal Orlando Resort App Before You Go. While every day is different, you can take a peak at your highest-priority rides and shows a few days or even a week before you visit to see what typical wait times look like. You can also add them to My Favorites for easy access once you’re in the park, and there’s even a Wait Time Alert feature to let you know when the lines have gotten shorter and you should head over. You’ll also want to use the app for mobile food ordering, so be sure to get it set up before you get to the park.
  • Have a Rough Plan For Your Day. While flexibility is critical, it’s good to arrive at Universal Studios Florida with a general idea of how you’re going to divide your time and prioritize experiences. That’s especially true if you have park to park tickets. For example, our kids really wanted to ride Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem and it’s near the entrance to Universal Studios Florida. We also planned for the biggest chunk of our day to be spent in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, so we hit Minions first and then gunned it over to Diagon Alley and got in line to pick out wands at Ollivanders. If we’d wanted to ride Escape from Gingotts, that would have been a great choice as soon as arriving in the area since the line can get extremely long. We also knew that we wanted to hop over to Universal’s Islands of Adventure to experience Hogsmeade and the Hogwarts Castle with enough time to return to Universal Studios Florida for the last run of Bourne Stuntacular – don’t miss that show! Sitting down with the app in advance and making a rough plan for the day will serve you well. Of course it’s important to know which park you’ll be starting at. Generally they both open at the same time but one park has Early Park Admission for guests staying on-property. If you’re staying on site that’s the obvious place to start, while if you’re staying in an independent hotel you may find smaller crowds at the other park.
  • Plan To Attend Some Shows. Universal Studios Orlando offers plenty of great entertainment at no extra charge. The trick is to get a handle on their schedules in advance, as they can be pretty limited some days. For example The Tales of Beedle the Bard in Diagon Alley only runs 10am to 3:30pm some days.
  • If you see a souvenir you like, buy it. Once you enter Diagon Alley you’ll realize that a huge portion of its real estate is actually shopping. There are some fun, unique items that you’ll only find there and in other shops within the themed lands of the Universal Studios theme parks. While there’s a large Universal shop on CityWalk, it doesn’t always get the same merchandise as the smaller locations within the parks. That’s somewhat of a contrast to Walt Disney World, where you’ll find an enormous variety (nearly everything) at both the Disney Springs World of Disney store as well as the Emporium in Magic Kingdom.

Money Saving Tips for Universal Studios

voyage a universal studio orlando

No matter who you are and when you are visiting, I know we all love to save as much money as we can! A trip to Universal Studios can be pretty pricey but there are some tricks to saving a little bit of money.

  • Buy Tickets Online: The easiest way to save money on Universal Studios tickets is to buy them in advance from a legitimate source. You’ll save a few dollars person on a 1 day park to park ticket, but a family buying a 2 day ticket can easily save over $100! You’ll also save precious time at the gate.
  • Consider Ticket/Resort Packages: If you’ve decided to stay at a Universal Studios hotel, you might score a great deal by booking the hotel and tickets together as a package .
  • Check for Deals/Specials: Often times Universal will run deals and promotions that will provide you some savings. These may include multi-day ticket purchases at a discounted rate and more! You can find current deals here .
  • Check for Discounts: There are a few qualifications that may get you a discounted rate when it comes to purchasing Universal tickets. For example, they offer a discounted cost to both Military personnel (active, retired, and spouse of the military) AAA members, and Florida residents.
  • Bring Water and Snacks. Universal Studios Florida allows you to bring up to 2 liters of water along with snacks and even a small soft-sided cooler. They don’t have facilities for heating up food, but feel free to pack sandwiches or even cheese, crackers and apples for an easy, cost-effective lunch. You might want to bring enough food for lunch and an afternoon snack and then you can plan for dinner on CityWalk as soon as the parks close. (We ate lunch at Three Broomsticks and were underwhelmed by the balance of quality vs price.)

  • Choose Dining Options Wisely. Lots of Universal tips will tell you to eat tons of thematic snacks in the theme parks. But if you are going to purchase food at Universal Studios Orlando, choose wisely! We liked the ice cream at Florian Fortescue’s but found most of the candies at Honeydukes to be gimmicky and not great. TODAY Cafe has a surprisingly nice range of breakfast/brunch/lunch options and pastries for an afternoon snack – we mobile ordered breakfast while in line for our first ride and then picked it up when we were done! For a quick lunch, I’ve heard solid recommendations for Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck at Universal Studios and Green Eggs and Ham in Universal’s Islands of Adventure. One thing to be sure you try? A nice refreshing cup of butterbeer!

  • Buy Shirts Online Before You Go. This one is straightforward, but you don’t have to wait until you arrive at Universal Studios or City Walk to buy your themed shirts for the day. You’ll spend less and enjoy a bigger selection if you purchase them in advance! We chose all of ours from this extensive selection .

Time Saving Universal Orlando Tips and Tricks

voyage a universal studio orlando

If you are looking to make the most of your trip and ensure that you have an action packed day, then you may want to keep these time savings tips and tricks in mind when it comes to planning out your day.

  • Consider Universal Express Passes : Although it’s pretty pricey, the Universal Express Pass may be worth the money if you are visiting during a busier time of the year and you want to do everything at Universal in just one day. You may want to consider Universal Studios premier resorts , which include the Universal Express Pass with your stay. The cost could make it worth booking at one of these hotels compared to a value resort, especially since you’ll be walking distance to the park’s entrance. Combined with early admission, you can really make the most of limited time this way!
  • Don’t Rely Exclusively on Hogwarts Express to Park Hop: I get it. The whole reason most people feel compelled to buy a Universal park to park ticket is to ride the Hogwarts Express. It’s very cool and definitely adds to the magical feeling of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter rides! That said, as the day progresses the wait time can be upwards of an hour. The two parks are plenty close to walk between – less than 10 minutes from gate to gate.

voyage a universal studio orlando

  • Use the Single Riders Line: Most Universal attractions offer a single riders line. Here you will face a significantly shorter wait time and will in turn have the opportunity to fit more into your day. Contrary to the name of the single rider’s line, quite often you will find that you will still get to ride in the same ride car as your partner or group but you just may not be sitting right next to them. If you’re visiting Universal Studios without kids or your kids are older and don’t mind, that’s a great tradeoff for a much shorter line.
  • Utilize the Universal Orlando App : Having the Universal Orlando app is very beneficial when you are visiting the parks. You can find resources including a park map, ride and attractions wait times, scheduled show times, and more!
  • Skip Sit-Down Dinner in the Theme Parks (If You Can): This tip won’t work for everyone, but if you’re able to push your group for a late dinner at City Walk you’ll be able to take advantage of the quieter night hours at Universal Studios. Universal’s Islands of Adventure is often open later than Universal Studios Florida but sometimes everything is done by 7pm or 8pm. We didn’t do this an instead opted for a nice dinner at Mythos, the interior of Poseidon’s cave pictured above. The food was very good and it’s a beautifully themed restaurant, but we missed out on the last 90 minutes of park time. It was the right choice for our family after three days of hustling around theme parks (and we had a very special 11th birthday to celebrate) but if we go again we’ll probably make a different choice.

What To Bring To Universal Studios Orlando Tips

voyage a universal studio orlando

If you don’t read any other Universal Orlando tips, be sure to review these!

  • Wear the most comfortable shoes you can find. I brought these sneakers for our trip to Orlando and they worked out great even through we covered a whopping 23 miles in three days. We hit 20,000 steps just on our day at Universal Studios!
  • Since you’ll be walking a ton and Orlando is almost never cold, prepare to drink a lot of water. All eateries in Universal Orlando will give you a free cup, or you can use Coke Freestyle machines for water anywhere you see them. Since we are a family of four and we like to stay hydrated, we brought a hydration bladder in our backpack in addition to a smaller insulated bottle. Collectively we went through about 6 liters of water, so I was very glad we brought the bladder! Otherwise we would have been stopping constantly to refill instead of bouncing from one activity to another.

voyage a universal studio orlando

  • If you want to be chosen at Ollivander’s, you have to dress the part. My son was the lucky young wizard chosen for the wand receiving ceremony! I think he had a few factors weighing in his favor. First, he and his sister came fully decked out in their house shirts and robes. Second, it was his 11th birthday and he had the official Universal Studios pin given out at guest services. Third, while waiting for our turn with Mr. Ollivander we chatted up our escort and made sure she knew that he was there for his 11th birthday because that’s when all young witches and wizards matriculate at Hogwarts. She could tell we were into it and I think she gave a nod to Mr. Ollivander himself. Even if it isn’t your birthday, I think coming in costume with one of these robes will help your case!
  • The #1 item to put on your Universal Studios Orlando packing list? An external battery pack , without question, is the most important thing to bring on your Universal Orlando trip. When I polled my Facebook group the day before traveling it was everyone’s top recommendation and they were right! Between taking photos and videos, tracking my kids on their AirTags , refreshing the Universal app to check wait times and show schedules, and ordering food I ended up needing a second battery back. Fortunately I had ordered this one right before our trip and it worked incredibly well. There’s also a version for non-iPhones .

Visiting Universal Orlando FAQS

voyage a universal studio orlando

The best way to get the most out of your time at Universal Orlando is to decide on your priorities. Whether you love thrill rides or can’t get enough of casting spells with the interactive wants in Diagon Alley, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to do absolutely everyone in a single visit to Universal Studios unless you spend lots of time there. Don’t stress out, leave the FOMO behind, and have a blast doing what’s meaningful to you!

Yes, we brought this backpack and it worked perfectly. I also attached this partner to it, which was extremely helpful when our family opted to divide and conquer – it was the perfect Universal Studios trick to make sure we could each still carry the essentials without being bogged down.

For rides that are physically intense – and you’ll find quite a few at Universal Studios Orlando – there are free lockers to stash your stuff before you get on the ride.

Many first time visitors to Universal Studios feel like they’ve had their fill after one or two days of park to park tickets. If you’re visiting in the warm weather and don’t have other plans for Orlando, consider adding another day for Volcano Bay. Sometimes you’ll find promotions here that give you two free days when you buy two, but personally I think that four days would feel pretty repetitive and there are plenty of other great things to do in Orlando !

Universal Studios Florida park in Orlando including San Francisco wharf and London in Harry Potter world.

11 Best Rides at Universal Orlando (Plus Must Do Experiences)

This page contains affiliate links. Please read our disclosure for more info.

From thrilling roller coasters to the immersive Harry Potter world, there’s plenty to enjoy at the movie-themed Universal Studios Orlando.

We love exploring the different lands—hopping from Diagon Alley, London to Springfield, USA, strolling on San Francisco’s wharf and through the streets of New York.

In this post, we share our rankings for the best rides at Universal Orlando plus recommendations for other must do activities.

What is Universal Studios Florida?

Most popular rides at universal studios orlando, best rides at universal orlando, other top things to do at universal studios orlando, is universal orlando worth visiting, other universal and disney posts.

San Francisco wharf, Universal Orlando, USA

The Universal Orlando Resort consists of two theme parks— Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure , plus the water park Volcano Bay .

This post focuses on the best rides at Universal Studios Florida .

Be sure to check out our guide to the best rides at Islands of Adventure , as it’s home to our three favourite attractions in the whole resort— Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure , Jurassic World VelociCoaster , and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey .

The Islands of Adventure post also has tips for avoiding lines at Universal, what to pack, where to stay and more.

Note that both parks have Harry Potter Worlds — Hogsmeade is in Islands of Adventure and Diagon Alley is in Universal Studios Florida. Both are amazing so it’s worth visiting both parks with a Park-to Park ticket .

Back to Contents

These are the top Universal Studios Florida rides that have the longest lines with their average wait times over a year:

  • Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts – 62 minutes
  • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem – 46 minutes
  • Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit – 46 minutes
  • Revenge of the Mummy – 39 minutes

At busy times of the year, consider purchasing an Express Pass to skip the lines on almost all attractions at Universal Orlando (including all the rides below).

It’s included if you stay at one of Universal’s Premium hotels (we loved our stay at Portofino Bay a 10-15 minute walk from the parks).

You can also reduce your wait times by joining the Single Rider lines for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Revenge of the Mummy, and Transformers.

1) Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  Thrill Ride, 3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height:  42 inches (107cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:  Yes for bags (free) Location:  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley

Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts is by far the best ride at Universal Studios Florida—don’t miss it!

As soon as you walk down the wonderfully detailed Diagon Alley in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you notice the large dragon on top of Gringotts Bank—this is where the ride takes place.

Lobby in the Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts ride, Universal Orlando, USA

Even the queue is part of the experience as you walk into the grand lobby past goblin bank tellers. It looks so much like the movie and the goblins are incredibly realistic.

Goblin bank teller on the Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts ride at Universal Orlando, USA

The ride itself is a mix of roller coaster and motion simulator with 3D screens as you join Harry and friends as they try to escape from the bank. There are some fun thrills but it’s not too intense.

Harry Potter fans will love being part of key scenes from The Deathly Hallows Part 2 .

As Escape from Gringotts is the most popular ride in the park, you’ll want to ride this first thing. It’s at the back of the park so power walk straight over there as soon as the gates open.

It’s included in Express Pass so we walked right on.

2) Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  Thrill Ride Minimum Height:  51 inches (130cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:  Yes for bags and all loose items including phones (free) Location:  Production Central

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is the only outdoor roller coaster at Universal Studios Florida. It’s a scary one beginning with a vertical climb up to terrifying heights followed by a massive drop.

One of the most fun aspects of the ride is choosing a song as your personal soundtrack (don’t take too long to choose or you’ll end up with the default!).

Simon loved Rip Ride Rockit, but I found it too jolty. VelociCoaster in Islands of Adventure is a much smoother (and even more thrilling) coaster.

3) Revenge of the Mummy

Museum entrance to Revenge of the Mummy ride at Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  Thrill Ride Minimum Height:  48 inches (122cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   Yes for bags (free) Location:  New York

Revenge of the Mummy is a fun indoor coaster that takes place mostly in the dark with some cool special effects.

While it doesn’t go upside down, it can be pretty scary as mummies try to attack you and you feel the heat of fire.

It’s one of the best rides at Universal Studios Orlando, a classic that’s a must do for most visitors.

The single-rider line is useful for this popular attraction.

4) Hogwarts Express – Kings Cross Station

Kings Cross Station, Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  Family Minimum Height:  Children under 48 inches (122cm) need to be supervised Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   No Location:  The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley

Hogwarts Express is both a ride and transport between King’s Cross Station at Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure.

A Park-to-Park ticket is needed to ride, and you’ll want to ride it both ways for different experiences.

Starting from Kings Cross has the advantage of departing from the iconic Platform 9¾ —at the top of the stairs watch other guests disappear through the wall!

The video screens in the windows and doors of the train make it feel like you are really riding the Hogwarts Express along with Harry and friends.

5) Transformers: The Ride 3D

Entrance to the Transformers: The Ride 3D, Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride: 3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height: 40 inches (102cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   No Location:  Production Central

Transformers is a 3D motion simulator where you join Optimus Prime and Bumblebee in a battle against Megatron.

It’s a thrilling adventure with some fun effects (feel heat and water) and realistic moments (when robots are thrown against the vehicle).

Motion sickness can be an issue on this one. It was for me in Universal Studios Singapore , so I skipped it in Orlando. Simon always enjoys it, though.

Look out for the Transformers character meet and greet outside.

6) The Simpsons Ride

Giant Bart and Lisa at the entrance to The Simpsons Ride, Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height: 40 inches (102cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   No Location:  Springfield, U.S.A: Home of The Simpsons

On this simulated roller coaster, you join the Simpsons family on a trip to Krustyland.

Simon thought it was a fun ride for Simpsons fans but not a must do.

It’s notoriously bad for motion sickness, so I skipped it.

The Springfield area is definitely worth visiting, though. It’s cool to see locations from the TV show like Moe’s, Krusty Burger, and Kwik-E-Mart. You can play carnival-style games too.

7) Despicable Me Minion Mayhem

Entrance to Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride at Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height: 40 inches (102cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   No Location:  Production Central

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is one of the most popular rides at Universal Orlando, but we rank it lower. It’s a higher priority with kids.

It’s yet another 3D motion simulator ride where you join Gru and his daughters to train to become a minion. When it goes wrong, you follow the family through all sorts of dangers.

It’s a cute ride but maybe skippable for adults if lines are long, unless you are a big minion fan.

If you really want to ride it and don’t have an Express Pass, I’d head back here (it’s near the entrance to the park) after riding Gringotts and Rip Ride Rockit.

8) Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon

Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon ride at Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height: 40 inches (102cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:   No Location:  New York

Simon enjoyed the Jimmy Fallon ride more than he expected—it’s silly but enjoyable and worth doing if lines aren’t long when you’re in New York.

Jimmy Fallon fans will especially appreciate the jokes, but it’s a family-friendly attraction suitable for most, unless motion sickness is an issue (yep, it’s another motion simulator).

9) Men In Black Alien Attack!

Men In Black Alien Attack! at Universal Florida, Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  Interactive Shooter Dark Ride Minimum Height: 42 inches (107cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:  Yes for bags (free) Location:  World Expo

Men in Black is a welcome break from the motion simulators as you ride in cars trying to shoot aliens and rack up the highest score.

While it’s not as well done as the interactive shooter rides at Disney like Buzz Lightyear at Magic Kingdom , it’s worth doing if you have time.

It’s a good option in the afternoon once you’ve ridden the more popular rides.

10) E.T. Adventure

Type of Ride:  Dark Ride Minimum Height: 34 inches (86.36cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:  No Location:  Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone

Another low-key dark ride is E.T. Adventure . It’s the only truly gentle ride in the park, so it makes a good break from thrills and 3D simulators.

You ride on flying bikes in the sky and then, strangely, visit E.T.’s home planet. It’s dated but cute.

11) Fast and Furious – Supercharged

Cars on the Fast and Furious - Supercharged ride at Universal Orlando, USA

Type of Ride:  3D Motion Simulator Minimum Height: 40 inches (102cm) Express Pass:  Yes Locker Required:  No Location:  San Francisco

Fast and Furious is one of the least popular rides in the park.

The various pre-stories feel unnecessarily long and the ride itself is short, shaky, and just not that exciting.

Unless you are a fan of the franchise or a car nerd (there are lots in the queue), this one is skippable.

For me, the best things to do at Universal Studios Orlando are not rides at all.

12) See the Knight Bus

Georgian townhouses of Grimmauld Place, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

While I find the rides at Universal Studios Florida less appealing than at Islands of Adventure, the area I truly love is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley .

You start in London with the Georgian townhouses of Grimmauld Place and Kings Cross Station, where you catch the Hogwarts Express.

One of the top attractions in this area is the purple triple-decker Knight Bus , one of the actual prop buses used in the Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban film.

Knight Bus, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

You can peek inside, meet the conductor, and occasionally watch him converse with the shrunken head that hangs above the dashboard.

13) Explore Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

This is where it gets really good. See if you can find the hidden entrance to Diagon Alley then emerge into another world.

This immersive area is incredibly detailed with lots to explore. You can buy a wand in Ollivanders , jokes at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes , Every Flavour beans at Sugarplum’s Sweetshop and feather quills and parchment at Scribbulus .

Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley, Universal Orlando, USA

While the stores sell plenty of souvenirs, the decor feels authentic and there’s lots of cool stuff to see, even for non-shoppers.

Flourish & Blotts shop in Diagon Alley, Universal Orlando, Florida, USA

The street is dominated by the huge dragon on top of Gringotts Bank, which breathes actual fire every now and then.

Gringotts Bank and dragon down Diagon Alley, Universal Orlando, USA

Diagon Alley gets really busy so it’s best enjoyed at the very beginning or end of the day.

We came here first thing to ride Gringotts and look around and then returned for lunch after looping around the park. It also looks especially magical after dark.

14) Wander Down Knockturn Alley

Knockturn Alley, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

At the end of Diagon Alley, you can find the entrance to Knockturn Alley , home to vendors specialising in darker forms of magic.

It is literally dark down here with a genuinely creepy vibe that doesn’t feel like a theme park at all.

Make sure to go inside Borgin and Burkes to see all kinds of powerful Dark Arts objects.

15) Watch the Wand Ceremony at Ollivanders

The Wand Ceremony at Ollivanders, Islands of Adventure, Universal Orlando, Florida

Watching the wand ceremony at Ollivanders Wand Shop is a must do at Universal Studios Orlando.

The dark store in Diagon Alley feels so authentic with its towering piles of wand boxes on dusty shelves.

One person is chosen from the room to be paired with their perfect wand by conducting spells. They can then choose to purchase the wand next door, as can anyone watching.

You can also visit Ollivanders in Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure , but obviously, the Diagon Alley location is most authentic.

16) Cast a Spell with a Wand!

Erin dressed in Harry Potter robe and wand at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka

Buying an interactive wand (from $63) is a fun way to enhance your experience at Harry Potter world. You can cast spells in Diagon Alley and over in Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure.

We loved creating wand magic on our Universal Studios Japan visit!

Look out for the gold medallions on the floor that show you where and how to cast a spell.

It might take practice to get the wand movements just right to create magical effects like making it rain, illuminating lanterns, and levitating a quill.

17) Eat in the Leaky Cauldron

People dining in the Leaky Cauldron, Universal Orlando, USA

The Leaky Cauldron pub is the main place to eat in Diagon Alley. It serves British fare like fish and chips and bangers and mash.

Vegan options include Irish Stew and Shepherd’s Pasty Pie (with meatless beef crumbles and vegetables), which Simon enjoyed.

Accompanying your meal with a glass of Butterbeer (hot, cold or frozen) is a rite of passage. We also tried a Fizzy Orange Juice but regretted it.

18) Enjoy a Butterbeer Ice Cream

Butterbeer Ice Cream, Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando, USA

The Butterbeer beverage is super sweet and I prefer it in soft-serve ice cream form, which you can enjoy from Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour in Diagon Alley.

19) See a Show

For a change of pace, there are two indoor shows at Universal Studios Florida.

The Bourne Stuntacular is a live-action stunt show as you watch Jason Bourne on his adventures.

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-up Show gives you the opportunity to see how makeup and special effects are created for the big screen including how to make fake blood.

20) Look out for Street Entertainment

You can also find street entertainment throughout the park—check the app for schedules.

In Diagon Alley, you can watch musical sensation (and Molly Weasley’s favourite singer), Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees , and enjoy storytelling and puppets with The Tales of Beedle the Bard .

In New York, listen out for the soulful sounds of The Blues Brothers .

Universal Orlando is definitely worth visiting—it’s a must for movie fans.

While we prefer the rides at Islands of Adventure, we wouldn’t miss Universal Studios Florida for the incredibly immersive Diagon Alley and the excellent theming throughout the park—from New York to London to San Francisco.

Try to spend a day at each of the parks if you can, although with a Park-to-Park ticket you can see the highlights in one day, especially if you have an Express Pass.

Universal CityWalk Orlando opened in 1999. From there, guests can proceed into either of the theme parks, Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure. CityWalk features shopping, nightclubs, and dining venues, and a movie theater. Universal Store has all the merchandise from both parks and Margaritaville has a gift shop. There are many night clubs at CityWalk most popular is the Groove. Visitors also enjoy themed dining and shopping, a variety of special events throughout the year, and you might even catch a real film crew at work on the backlot. Universal Studios Florida, opened on June 7, 1990, is a theme park that lets visitors "Ride the Movies." The themes of Universal Studio's are targeted at making guests feel like they are in a movie set with rides, shows, and attractions that are inspired by popular film, television, and music productions. The park consists of eight themed areas – Hollywood, Production Central, New York, San Francisco, World Expo, Springfield, Woody Woodpecker's Kidzone and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley.

Islands of Adventure , opened May 28, 1999, is a theme park composed of seven distinct "islands" that are themed to various forms of adventures. Visitors start off in the Port of Entry and make their way through the various islands – Marvel Super Hero Island, Toon Lagoon, Jurassic Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, The Lost Continent, and Seuss Landing. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, based on the popular Harry Potter franchise, is the only island added after the park opened; it opened to the public on June 18, 2010

Volcano Bay is a water-park opened in May 2017 as a replacement for Wet 'n Wild (itself founded in 1977 by SeaWorld founder George Millay). The park is themed around a 200-foot-tall (61m) volcano named "Krakatau" (see Krakatoa for information on the real Krakatau). Volcano Bay's attractions are located in four themed areas, each inspired by various Polynesian islands and cultures

Universal Orlando's on-site hotels include: Loews Portofino Bay Hotel & Spa, Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Hotel, and Cabana Bay Beach Resort. All four hotels are located in close proximity to the Universal Orlando theme parks. The hotels offer guests free water taxi or shuttle bus service to the Universal Orlando theme parks. Another benefit is that for all hotels but the Cabana Bay Beach Resort, the guest room can get you "Express Pass" at a kiosk near the ticket desk in the hotels. Theme park guests who are not staying at the Universal official hotels are able to purchase "Express Passes" at an additional cost.

Climate [ edit ]

Like all of Central Florida , the climate at Universal Orlando is humid and subtropical . Summer (May–October) is hot and sticky and winter (November–April) is mild and drier. Visitors from higher latitudes are often surprised by the sheer intensity of the summer sun in Florida, which can rise to within a few degrees of straight overhead in June and July. In June through September, late afternoon thundershowers are very common; plan accordingly.

Inclement weather can often lead to the temporary closure of outdoor rides and live performances. In the case of rides, they will re-open after the weather improves. Live performances may be either delayed or canceled outright. On the other hand, inclement weather could work to your advantage, as it drives some visitors away from outdoor areas, or out of the parks entirely.

When to visit [ edit ]

There used to be some times of year when the parks were relatively deserted, but not so much anymore. Now they just vary from "moderately busy" to "completely insane" . Still, deciding when to go remains a game of trade-offs : you must decide whether to favor lower crowds or longer park hours, and decide whether you prefer scorching days or chilly nights.

The peak periods for attendance are late December, mid-June to mid-August, and mid-February to mid-April. Why? That's when kids are on break from school . If you have kids, you may have no choice but to go during these peak times. The bad news is that you'll be packed like sardines next to 50,000 of your new closest friends, you'll wait two hours to go on rides like Forbidden Journey, Rip Ride Rockit, and Transformers, and you'll be paying a premium for the privilege. In the summer, you also get to listen to the kids complain about the heat. On the bright side, you'll have plenty of company, the parks are guaranteed to be open late, and almost every ride will be up and running.

If your schedule allows any flexibility at all, you should avoid these peak periods. Attendance is lowest in October, November (pre-Thanksgiving), December (pre-Christmas), and January. These can be very good times to go; crowds are low and prices are too, but keep in mind that you may find that several rides are shut down for maintenance, and the parks have shorter operating hours. In the winter, it's often too cold to go to the water parks, and you'll need a jacket at night.

Be aware, however, during the periods of mid-December to February, mid-June to July, during the first 2-3 weeks of October, and on Thanksgiving Day (in some cases), tour groups from South American countries , mainly from Brazil and Argentina, will invade Universal Orlando and other Orlando theme parks (including Disney). Many guests have complained of rudeness and improper supervision. There may be some groups that may not be as problematic as everyone could think, but still, if you see or hear a group of teens behind one or more 20- to 30-year-old adult(s) with a flag, your best bet is to go in the opposite direction.

The weeks between Easter and Memorial Day are another slow period, as well as the months of August and September; both periods provide a good balance of price, crowds, temperature, and operating hours, but you may need to take the kids out of school if you're bringing them along.

Of course, you may want to coordinate your trip with a special event such as Halloween Horror Nights.

Which day of the week [ edit ]

If your vacation dates are flexible, plan to arrive to the Orlando area on Thursday. Both Friday and Saturday are transition days for park visitors and less crowded, especially in the summer months. Saturdays do draw in more Annual Pass holders to the park, but that is the major day that people either arrive or leave the area. This causes attendance figures to be down, making it a perfect day to visit the parks. If you are planning to have a day of rest in your vacation, by arriving on Thursday you can enjoy two days of parks with reduced crowds and then use Sunday to rest.

To fill this unused capacity, Universal Orlando holds crowd-drawing special events on some weekends (F-Su). The above advice is not good for these event weekends. Consult a crowd calendar for your planning.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Most visitors fly into Orlando International Airport ( MCO  IATA ), +1 407-825-2001. It's served by every major US airline and a wide variety of international carriers. Once there, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or order a limo or town car. If you're staying at an on-site Universal hotel, another option is Universal's Superstar Shuttle , a free bus service from the airport to all six resort hotels. Prior reservations are required. If driving yourself, Florida State Road 528 links the airport with Interstate 4 , and heading northbound on that highway leads directly to Universal.

Orlando-Sanford International Airport ( SFB  IATA is a bit farther from Universal than Orlando International. Aside from domestic flights on Allegiant Air, the airport primarily handles flights from the United Kingdom and Iceland, and Universal's Superstar Shuttle is not available here. Florida State Road 417 connects the airport to Interstate 4.

By car [ edit ]

Interstate 4 is the most direct driving route to Universal Orlando, passing just south of the resort. Depending on your point of origin, Florida's Turnpike can be quite useful, particularly if you're driving north from the Miami area. If you're coming from a cruise at Port Canaveral , Florida State Road 528 gets you to I-4, with Orlando International Airport and the Turnpike en route.

By train [ edit ]

Amtrak's Silver Service Miami – New York City routes serve Orlando four times daily, with two trains in either direction. Northbound trains from Miami arrive at the Orlando station at 1:43PM and 7:08PM; southbound trains from NYC arrive at 10:17AM and 12:55PM. The Auto Train , which can carry both passengers and automobiles, serves nearby Sanford non-stop from Lorton , Virginia (near Washington, D.C. ).

If you are coming from Volusia , Seminole, or northern Osceola counties on a weekday and want to avoid I-4 traffic, your best option is SunRail , which runs between DeBary and Poinciana. There is no service on weekends and some federal holidays (for example, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day), and the trains run every 30 minutes during rush hour periods, and every 2 hours during off peak periods. The closest station to Universal is at Sand Lake Road in Orlando, however, a taxi or ridesharing service will be needed to complete the journey. For convenience, take the train to Lynx Central Station in downtown Orlando and take Lynx bus routes 21, 38, or 40 to Universal. You may also disembark at the Orlando Health/Orlando Amtrak station and board Lynx bus route 40 from there.

By bus [ edit ]

Universal's Superstar Shuttle is a very popular option for guests staying at Universal resort hotels; it provides transportation to and from the airport. Be sure to book service ahead of time! It costs about $39 per adult, each way.

If you're not staying at a Universal resort, or aren't coming in via Orlando International, you do have some other choices. Mears Transportation is the main player in the region; they have a fleet of shuttle buses and town cars that can take you to any of the local attractions or hotels.

Long-distance bus company Greyhound serves Orlando at their Orlando Terminal, ☏ +1 407-292-3424 .

LYNX is the public bus service of the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority. Four LYNX routes provide service between Universal Orlando and the surrounding area. All pick-up and drop-off from the Universal Orlando Parking Garage bus stop, next to the guest drop-off loop on the walkway between the parking garages and CityWalk.

  • Route 21 , from Universal inbound to Lynx Central Station in downtown Orlando and outbound to Sand Lake Commons. This is the one of four connectors to SunRail at Lynx Central Station.
  • Route 37 , from Universal northbound to Park Promenade Plaza near and southbound to the Florida Mall.
  • Route 38, from Universal southbound to International Drive and Destination Parkway, and Northbound non-stop express to Lynx Central Station in downtown Orlando.
  • Route 40 , from Universal inbound to Lynx Central Station. This is the other connector to SunRail. (The outbound route for this line only goes one stop further, to the Universal Employee Center; make sure you don't go to this stop!)
  • Route 303 , is a commuter route with very limited service, running from Universal to different locations throughout Orlando and Walt Disney World , specifically servicing Disney Springs .

Tickets [ edit ]

Two kinds of tickets are offered: One Park tickets and Park-to-Park tickets . Park-to-Park tickets are split further into two different kinds: the 2-Park option, covering Universal Studios Florida and Island of Adventure, and the 3-Park option, which adds in the Volcano Bay water park. Make note that the 3-Park option is only available with the 2-day tickets or more. To visit Volcano Bay with a One Park ticket, you'll need to buy 3 days or more.

As the two theme parks at Universal are so close (within easy walking distance!), the Park-to-Park tickets are a great deal if you're interested in, for example, spending a morning in one park and then having dinner in the other, and then going back to the first to check out a nighttime show. If you're interested in riding the Hogwarts Express train ride, you'll also need a Park-to-Park ticket.

Buying online through the Universal Orlando website can save you $20 off the price of tickets bought at the gate.

Another add-on option for your tickets is the My Universal Photos package, which allows unlimited downloads of all photos and videos taken at participating locations in both theme parks and the water park as well as one 4x6 and one 5x7 photo print. Also included is a themed lanyard and a card that enables photographers to group your photos together in the online system. Exclusive pricing at on select in-park photo prints rounds out the amenities. One and three-day packages are offered, at $70 or $90 per card. If you're just visiting Volcano Bay, a separate water park-only package is sold for $40 per card.

The CityWalk Party Pass ticket enables unlimited club-to-club access on one night, and runs $12 per pass, or $15 if you want to include a movie at the AMC Cineplex.

Multiple-day tickets do not have to be used on consecutive days, however, these tickets will expire 6 days after they are first used (7 days total), so be sure to use all the days purchased prior to that. Unused tickets expire 12 months from the order date.

Children under age three are admitted for free. The prices below were accurate as of July 2018 (6.5% Florida sales tax not included):

Volcano Bay water park has a different single-day, one-park admission price: $80 ($75 for ages 3–9).

Florida residents who provide proof of residence get discounts of varying degrees with some blockout dates, and they can't purchase beyond a 4-day ticket. Annual passes are also available for frequent visitors or residents.

Universal Express [ edit ]

Universal Studios Florida allow guests to utilize the "Universal Express Plus" Pass on selected attractions. This pass admits users to a separate line for the attraction, which is given priority status when boarding. Guests of Universal's three on-site resorts may show their room keys for unlimited uses of the faster line for each ride.

Universal Express is not included in park admission. There are a limited number of passes available each day and they are often sold out in advance. The cost of the pass varies based on what parks are selected and even what day is selected, with higher prices charged on peak operating days during the year.

If staying at Portofino Bay, Royal Pacific Resort or the Hard Rock Hotel then free Universal Express is available at kiosk in the lobby with your room key.

Get around [ edit ]

While everything at Universal Orlando is within a fairly short walking distance from any point in the resort, there are some additional options for getting to and from the on-site resort hotels. You can take a free water taxi boat or a rickshaw to get to all resorts except for the Cabana Bay Beach Resort; for the latter you can take one of their specially-themed buses that run between CityWalk and the hotel.

Talk [ edit ]

As in most places in the United States, English is the default language throughout the Universal Orlando Resort. However, many team members throughout the property are bi- or tri-lingual, and they can be identified by language signs on their name tags, representing the languages they speak. Spanish is very common in Florida, and the US as a whole. Spanish speakers will not have any problems navigating the resort.

Guest Services locations are near the entrance of all the theme parks, water parks, and resort hotels. Team members, who usually are multilingual, will also be available there to answer any questions you may have.

For hearing-impaired guests, assistive listening devices and captioning (handheld, reflective, or video) are available for selected attractions. Cast Members with knowledge of American Sign Language can be identified by the appropriate symbol on their name tags, and interpreters are available by appointment.

Do [ edit ]

A charming feature of Universal Orlando's rides is that they entertain you even while you're waiting to get into the ride. You can watch clips from The Simpsons when in line for its namesake ride, peruse magical curiosities on your way into Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and watch live singing performances while waiting for the Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon. Of course waiting in line is still waiting in line, but that time doesn't feel as wasted here as it does at some amusement parks.

Universal Studios Florida [ edit ]

Universal Studios Florida features seven themed areas, all situated around a large lagoon. Clockwise from the entrance, they are Production Central, New York, San Francisco, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, World Expo, Springfield: Home of the Simpsons, Woody Woodpecker's Kidzone and Hollywood. Each area features a combination of rides, shows, attractions, character appearances, dining outlets and merchandise stores.

New York [ edit ]

An extremely detailed "backlot" replica of New York City circa 1940. Wander the streets and alleyways of this neon-covered land and peer in the shop windows to find interesting surprises. The Blues Brothers arrive in the iconic "Bluesmobile" and perform multiple times a day from their stage on one of the land's streets.

San Francisco [ edit ]

A small waterfront area that captures the feel of San Francisco's Embarcadero and Fisherman's Wharf. Marvel at the full-sized lighted replica of the city's iconic Ghirardelli factory and rooftop sign. Unfortunately, there's no chocolate within!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley [ edit ]

The second land of Universal's explosively popular Harry Potter themed areas, Diagon Alley captures the excitement of the secret London neighborhood where wizards escape the city to shop, drink, and discuss the news and matters of the day. Just as in the films, the alley is hidden behind the apartments of shops of London, and can only be accessed by traveling through a magical brick wall!

See [ edit ]

  • Diagon Alley – the main part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (the smaller Hogsmeade section is in Islands of Adventure), hidden behind a brick wall in the "London" area of the park. The whimsical storefronts are a delight for fans of the series, and the attention to detail means that a walk around the area will reveal lots of interesting touches. If you turn the corner near the Leaky Cauldron you'll find yourself in dim, eerie Knockturn Alley , and don't miss the dragon atop Gringotts Bank that breathes fire every ten minutes.

Characters [ edit ]

  • Hogsmeade – the smaller portion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a recreation of the wizarding village of Hogsmeade complete with snowy rooftops and crooked chimneys. A stunning recreation of Hogwarts Castle hosts the "Forbidden Journey" ride and has outdoor light shows each evening around dusk (times vary by season).
  • Seuss Landing – when you reach this part of the park, pause to take in the Seussical landscape. Even the real plants in this area look like something out of the classic picture books.
  • 28.47455 -81.466422 2 Universal Studios Globe . Its popularity as a selfie spot means that you might have to wait in line for a photo. To avoid the wait, try taking your photo from across the water with the globe in the background. Then the globe may look less prominent, but you'll capture other parts of CityWalk in the photo too. Drink [ edit ]

When creating the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the folks at Universal had to turn the fictional drink of butterbeer into something real. Fortunately, they did an excellent job, and the butterbeer sold in the park is a unique and deliciously sweet non-alcoholic drink. It's available in regular, hot, and frozen varieties; regular is a soda while frozen is something like a slushee. The drink's creamy topping is made from dairy, but the regular and frozen kinds can be made dairy-free and vegan by leaving off the topping, and butterbeer with a non-dairy, vegan topping is available at the Leaky Cauldron and the Three Broomsticks. (The hot version has dairy in its base and can't be veganized.)

Sleep [ edit ]

One of the best perks to staying on site is that shuttles and ferries to and from Universal Studios, Islands of Adventures, and Universal's CityWalk are available free of charge! And another great perk of staying on the grounds is that you get admission one hour early to one of the parks (either Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure depending on the day), so you can get on the rides when the lines are short before the parks open to the rest of the public.

Universal Orlando Resort offers five on site hotels, with three more opening over the next three years. They are split into categories ranging from Value to Premier.

The three "Premier" hotels (Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel) also include free Universal Express Unlimited for shorter lines in the parks.

Budget [ edit ]

Universal classifies these hotels as Prime Value resorts . All fairly new and lightly themed, these options are great for families and guests who want less of a full resort atmosphere and more of a convenient place to relax and sleep after a long day in the theme parks. Though less expensive than the other on-site hotels, these are still well-equipped and have some resort-style facilities.

A third budget resort, consisting of two unique hotels in a new lower category termed Value , is under construction across Interstate 4 from the main Universal Orlando Resort property. Connected by shuttle, this resort will be named Universal's Endless Summer Resort . The first phase to open, the Surfside Inn and Suites hotel, will begin accepting guests in the summer of 2019. The second, the Dockside Inn and Suites hotel, will open in 2020.

Mid-range [ edit ]

Universal's mid-range hotels are called Preferred resorts . Providing more extensive amenities and dining options, these resorts are ideal for those looking to kick back and unwind after enjoying the parks.

Splurge [ edit ]

Universal's highest level of hotels are termed Premier resorts . These large hotels offer a wide range of amenities, including high-end dining, massive pools, extensive theming and luxurious rooms.

Go next [ edit ]

  • For the quintessential American vacation resort and main competitor to Universal Orlando, visit Walt Disney World and its four theme parks, 20 minutes south on Interstate 4.

Universal Epic Universe: Everything We Know About the New Theme Park

A rendering of a theme park

Universal Epic Universe started out as a doodle on a piece of napkin.

“Here’s a layout of how this could work,” said Mark Woodbury back in 2016. At the time, Universal’s current CEO was president of Universal Creative and had just tasked his team with setting up a brainstorm session with one topic on the agenda: “What would we create if we had the opportunity to build another domestic park?”

As it turns out, a whole new universe.

Cut to nearly a decade later and here I am sharing with you the first exclusive deep dive into the highly anticipated details around Universal Epic Universe , the most immersive and innovative park ever built, opening in 2025.

What is Universal Epic Universe?

Let’s start with the basics. Epic Universe is  Universal Orlando Resort’s  fourth theme park, built on 750 acres of land, just a few miles from  Universal Studios Florida ,  Universal Islands of Adventure  and   Universal Volcano Bay . This new offering will transport guests to expansive, vivid worlds filled with awe-inspiring attractions, entertainment, hotels, dining and more.

How do you get to Epic? Instead of parking in the main parking garage and accessing the theme parks through  Universal CityWalk , you’ll drive directly to where the new theme park is located (and yes, there will also be complimentary transportation connecting the entire Universal Orlando Resort destination!).

From ground-breaking technology to an innovative racing roller coaster, to five different worlds connected through mystical portals, Epic is transformational on so many levels.

“Epic is the future meeting the present,” says Gabriela Lander, director of Facility Design for Universal Creative, who’s been involved in the Epic project (what at the time was being called the “new project”) since the very first brainstorm session. “We’ll have a park where we’ll be able to walk through nature and be guided by the stars, surrounded by iconic elements that materialize dreams into immersive worlds of epic stories, and with a level of technology that will take the experience to a new level,” she adds.

Inspired by the exploration of unknown worlds, the theme park offers an entirely new level of experience by putting guests into five fully-themed worlds. “We’re telling stories that resonate with our guests, immersing them right from the front gate,” says Steve Tatham, the executive creative director for Universal Epic Universe, who moved back to Orlando from Osaka, Japan, to work on this project. “Universal redefined theme-park entertainment forever. We’re setting a new standard, and that’s what it means to be a modern theme park,” he adds.

Can you imagine what it must feel like to work on a project for so long, not be able to talk about it, and then finally start to see it come to life? “It’s one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” says Gabriela. “This amazing park went from an idea to a design, and from there to a full construction site, where everyday you see new parts being built or installed. The amount of talent invested in producing a new theme park that goes above and beyond what we have already done, is a humbling and heart-filling experience.” She attributes the greatness of Epic Universe to the diverse talent involved in its creation. “It’s a direct reflection of the multitude of cultures, races, religions, abilities, backgrounds and genders represented in this project through our Team Members,” says Gabriela.

But how does Epic work?

voyage a universal studio orlando

Epic Universe is made up of five different worlds, all connected through Celestial Park , the first world you’ll experience once you walk through the Emerald Gate and the Chronos device at the entrance to Epic. “In our story, Chronos is this giant machine used to harness the energy of the Universe that powers all of Celestial Park, allowing us to open the portals to other worlds,” explains Adam Rivest, executive producer for Celestial Park. He has worked at Universal for 24 years and was actually the one who set up that first-ever brainstorm about Epic almost a decade ago — yes, the same meeting Gabriela was in, and where they got to see the plot of the land laid out on the table. Full circle.

Once you’re in Celestial Park (and I’ll get more into it below), you’ll have access to four portals, which are tall, obelisk-like structures, that take you into the other fully-themed, immersive worlds. And they are (drumroll please)…

  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic
  • SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
  • How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk
  • Dark Universe

“Never before have guests been able to immerse themselves in these stories as deeply as they do when crossing the thresholds of the four portals,” Steve says. “They’ll come face-to-face with scary monsters, they’ll tame dragons and encounter new magical eras.” And these narratives all exist within one giant — you guessed it —  epic universe .

“There’s a little bit for everybody,” Adam adds. “We’ve got worlds that are more geared toward children, some that are more geared toward the adventurous, others that are geared more toward adults. There’s a nice mix and within each world there’s also levels of demographic and appeal.”

And while I cannot quite expand on any of the worlds just yet, I can give you a glimpse of Celestial Park and the lore behind Epic Universe (it’s Universal, of course there’s lore!).

Celestial Park

Simply put, Celestial Park is a world between worlds, where everything begins and ends. Celestial Park holds the entrance (portals) to the other immersive areas of the theme park (worlds) and it’s also where you’ll find some of the best restaurants on property, must-do attractions, retail options and the most unique hotel in Universal’s portfolio. It was created as a space for people to (re)connect with each other and with nature. “We’ve made a conscious effort to put the  park  back into  theme park , and made sure not to design it with lots of concrete and asphalt streets,” says Adam.

Celestial Park also has a transformative function between day and night — during the day, it’s this beautiful, lush living garden with spectacular fountains, and at night, the entire area lights up and transforms into a completely different environment. It’s breathtaking.

Within the narrative created around the lore of Epic Universe, Celestial Park is the center of an ever-evolving universe that, throughout centuries, people — artists, musicians, explorers, adventurers, inventors — have visited for inspiration and connection, and maybe left a little piece of them behind.

“And I think that’s what’s really at the emotional core of it: our desire to belong, to connect, to meet new people, to discover new places, to have experiences. That’s what sets off great explorers, why people climb mountains, why they go on adventures. And also why they go through these portals,” says Steve.

Here’s everything  else  you can find in Celestial Park:

What to Ride in Celestial Park

Constellation carousel.

A rendering of a ride in Epic Universe

This beautiful carousel has a wonderful spin to it — quite literally. It may seem like a traditional carousel, with an array of celestial creatures to choose from, but as it goes round and round, the creatures are also turning 360 degrees, making you feel like you’re caught within the Milky Way, riding on constellations through the galaxy.

“Constellation Carousel is the most enchanting carousel ever made,” says Gabriela. “The design, the colors and tones, the dome that will cover it… well, all the elements used in this experience are the perfect combination to create a unique moment while enjoying Epic. The traditional carousel of our childhood is being redefined by the stars!” The ride is also covered in hundreds of points of starlight, creating a breathtaking cosmic ambiance.

Starfall Racers

A rendering of a ride in Epic Universe

“Celestial Park is all about the heavens, you know? And on Starfall Racers you’re physically riding the embodiment of a comet,” says Adam. This attraction is a racing dual-launch coaster that goes at 62 mph and reaches a max height of 133 feet. “While it’s giant and looks really intimidating at first, it’s designed to feel like an old wooden coaster, but smooth as a button. So, you’ll rise up in your seat and get those zero G feels,” says Adam. “Although there are a couple signature moves in there, most of the 1.8 mile track is a side-by-side race between two comets to see who gets to the end first,” he adds. With no break zones, by the way.

Riding it at night will be an attraction in itself — because the coaster is covered with hundreds of points of light, the vehicles look like shooting comets racing across the sky. Pretty cool.

And although I can’t give this easter egg away just yet, just know that there’s a gift for true Universal fans on the back of each coaster vehicle. Truly outatime!

Astronomica

At the center of Celestial Park lies Astronomica, an interactive wet-play attraction designed as a compass rose that points to the portals and attractions around Epic. A pro tip? Make sure you stop by at night too, as Astronomica comes alive with light, color and music!

Where to Eat in Celestial Park

A rendering of a restaurant in Epic Universe

For now, I can tell you that Celestial Park will house two visually breathtaking restaurants,  Atlantic  and  The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant . (Though I of course recommend staying tuned for more dining option updates!) “These two venues set the tone for what our culinary mission continues to be: quality fresh food with amazing storytelling,” says Chef Robert Martinez Jr., executive chef at Universal Orlando Resort. “I feel like my whole career has been leading up to the Epic Universe project. For me there is nothing more fulfilling than being part of a project from its inception and watching it blossom into an amazing atmosphere with delicious food.”

When creating the menus for the restaurants around Epic, the Food & Beverage team took all guests into consideration, making sure to cover dietary restrictions and preferences.

“Once upon a time, food played a part in the Universal experience, but today, in some cases, the food  is  the experience!” says Chef Martinez. “The menus touch on Universal’s great storytelling and immersive experiences. So, as more announcements get released, just know that something else really cool is coming right behind them!”

Atlantic Restaurant

Nestled in the middle of Celestial Park, Atlantic is Chef Martinez’s “precious gem.” The restaurant is surrounded by the shimmering waters of Neptune’s pool and has floor-to-ceiling Victorian glass walls. “It gives our guests the illusion of dining in an ‘out of this world’ glass aquarium,” says Chef Martinez. The name probably already gave it away, but you’ll be able to find the freshest seafood and typical — and not so typical — surf and turf options on the menu. Table for one, please!

The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant

A rendering of a restaurant in Epic Universe

Blue Dragon is a legitimate flavor bomb. Staying true to the electric neon dragons that snake the interior of the dining room, the restaurant has a vibrant and delectable menu. “Our guests will have the chance to enjoy flavors from China, Southeast Asia and Japan, all while dining under the constellations, as lanterns dance overhead in this beautiful indoor courtyard,” says Chef Martinez. If you need a break from the bustling environment, grab a seat at the cozy Tiger Bar for a drink or two.

Where to Shop

A rendering of a store inside of Epic Universe

There will be plenty of retail options for you to stock up on souvenirs through Celestial Park, including the Nintendo Super Star Store.  Founded by explorers that have been on multiple excursions into SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, this store is filled with colorful keepsakes themed around Nintendo’s beloved characters. Needless to say, there aren’t enough shopping bags for all I’ll want to bring home with me.

Where to Stay

An artist rendering of Helios hotel

Universal Epic Universe will open in 2025 alongside three new hotels — yes, three  new  hotels:  Universal Helios Grand Hotel ,  Universal Stella Nova Resort  and  Universal Terra Luna Resort .

Helios Grand Hotel

See that gorgeous backdrop encircling Epic Universe? That’s  Universal Helios Grand Hotel , a full-service hotel for guests looking to go all-out during their Universal Orlando Resort stay. Named after the God of the Sun, Helios is where the heavens and earth unite: it’s adorned with celestial patterns and constellation details in the decor and has a casual, elegant Mediterranean-inspired feel throughout. Sensing a theme, are we?

The coolest thing about the hotel is that it is walking-distance from Epic and has a dedicated and exclusive entrance into Celestial Park, making it one of the most unique properties in the Universal Orlando hotel portfolio. “From the hotel our guests will be able to enjoy the view of the beautiful gardens and natural wonders, and witness with advantage how they turn from a day event to a starry vision,” says Gabriela.

Universal Stella Nova Resort  and  Universal Terra Luna Resort

Galaxies and planets inspire these sister hotels. They’re related in concept, but offer two different experiences — Stella Nova is highlighted in teal and purple colors and represents its own galaxy with a black hole vortex porte-cochère while Terra Luna is highlighted in gold and green. Stella is inspired by the infinite vastness of the unknown universe and Terra is inspired by the thrill of pushing the limits of discovery. Both hotels will have 750 guest-rooms, resort-style amenities and several food and drink options. The exterior facades of the hotels are layered with thousands of dichroic panels, with every panel slightly unique, which makes the facade ever-changing depending on where you stand, time of day and weather. And guess what? You can already book your room at Stella Nova (opening January 21, 2025) and Terra Luna (opening February 25, 2025)! See you there!

“Epic is not just an idea; it is a living, breathing entity that we are creating here in Orlando, and so many people have been nurturing it along the way,” says Adam. “So it’s just really exciting that we’re about to share this park with the world.”

Well, I hope you’re as excited about Universal Epic Universe as I clearly am! What else do you want to know about it? Stay tuned to Discover Universal for more news and sign up here for email updates!

Universal orlando | orange deputies arrest ‘potential serial killer’ in slayings of two women, things to do, theme parks, universal orlando, universal orlando | universal ticket offer: florida resident 2-day passes good for 4 days.

Universal Orlando visitors line up for the parking garages last summer. (Dewayne Bevil/Orlando Sentinel)

Universal Orlando is offering two days of free theme parking to Florida residents who buy a two-day pass, creating four days of attraction attendance for one price.

That price varies with the date and is based on the first day of use.

A two-park, two-day pass with park-to-park powers between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios costs between $264.99 and $305.99 in the coming months, according to Universal’s website. (Pricing on these tickets is fluid, sometimes differing by $1 between days.) Buyers who opt to stay in one park for an entire day pay between $186.99 and $254.99.

A two-park, two day pass that includes Volcano Bay water park and the ability to move between the three attractions ranges between $267.99 and $350.99.  A pass without park-hopping goes for between $218.99 and $302.99.

Universal unwraps some details for 2 Epic Universe hotels

Prices for every day are posted on Universal’s website. This deal runs through Dec. 15. The visits to Universal do not have to occur on consecutive days.

Other bits in the fine print: There are a handful of block-out dates with some passes. Users must present proof of Florida residency at the time of ticket pick-up. Unused days will be forfeited. The deal must be purchased online; it’s not available at the front gate of the theme parks.

DreamWorks Land, featuring characters from “Shrek,” “Trolls” and “Kung Fu Panda,” is scheduled to open at Universal Studios sometime this summer. Halloween Horror Nights begins Aug. 30, although that is an after-hours event that requires a separately purchased ticket.

Universal Orlando announces new movie-themed parade, nighttime shows and more

Tarah Chieffi

As if Universal Orlando doesn't have enough excitement on the horizon with an entirely new theme park opening in 2025 , it is planning a blockbuster summer of entertainment.

On Monday, Universal announced a new parade, a nighttime lagoon show, a projection show in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more. The first of these new experiences debuts June 14. Here's the "mega" movie fun you can experience this summer.

Cinesational: A Symphonic Spectacular

voyage a universal studio orlando

On June 14, Universal Studios Florida will debut an all-new nighttime show that will bring the park's lagoon to life with music, fountains, projection mapping and drones. The show will lean into Universal's legacy of blockbuster films that have inspired past, present and current theme park attractions.

Guests will experience music from iconic films like "Jurassic World," "Jaws," "Ghostbusters," "Back to the Future," "Harry Potter," "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Minions" and more; favorite scenes and characters will be projected onto fountains over the lagoon. Meanwhile, more than 600 drones will fly overhead, making the show even more spectacular.

Universal Mega Movie Parade

In sticking with the theme of bringing cinematic masterpieces off the big screen and into its parks, the Universal Mega Movie Parade will debut July 3 at the Universal Studios Florida park. The parade will celebrate classic films like "E.T.," "Back to the Future," "Jaws" and "Ghostbusters," as well as recent blockbusters like "Jurassic World," "Minions," "Sing," "Trolls," and "Kung Fu Panda."

Universal Mega Movie Parade will feature 13 new floats, special effects and nearly 100 dancers, skaters, stilt walkers and other performers. You'll have to see it in person to see how "mega" this parade really is, but Universal did share that there will be a 16-foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man on the "Ghostbusters" float, a Caterbus and rainbows on the "Trolls" float and more than one massive dinosaur atop the "Jurassic World" float.

To celebrate the new parade, the park will open a limited-time Summer Tribute Store with themed rooms, merchandise and photo ops inspired by the films featured in the parade.

Hogwarts Always

Hogwarts Always will debut on June 14 at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade in Universal Islands of Adventure. On select nights, guests can watch scenes from a school year at Hogwarts, from shopping for supplies in Diagon Alley to riding the Hogwarts Express, participating in the sorting ceremony and more projected onto the facade of Hogwarts Castle.

As an extra surprise, the show will have four different endings. Each one honors a different Hogwarts house, and you never know which house will come out on top.

Ryan Gosling, Jurassic Park, Jaws at Universal Studios

Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal Orlando Resort are bringing more blockbuster movie action to your summer vacations before next year’s Epic Universe opening. Things kicked off at Universal Studios Hollywood with the Studio Tour’s 60th anniversary and Ryan Gosling making a surprise appearance for a new, limited time pre-show based on his new movie The Fall Guy —which we have video of below!

Meanwhile, Universal Orlando is preparing to bring back some of the theme park’s legendary icons from attractions past with new ways to experience Jaws , Back to the Future , Ghostbusters , and more in new daytime and nighttime entertainment offerings beginning June 4. Additionally, DreamWorks Land is set to open on June 14, which means you can soon take up space in Shrek’s beloved swamp across from the blessedly saved-from-being-demolished E.T. Adventure .

Here’s what you need to know:

Summer at Universal Studios Hollywood

Over the weekend io9 was invited to Universal Studios Hollywood to watch the premiere performance of The Fall Guy Stuntacular Pre-Show , performed ahead of the park’s cult fave Waterworld experience. What we weren’t aware of was that we were in for a stunt marketing surprise as Gosling—the film’s star, and a noted theme park fan—showed up to introduce it. It was a-unique-to-the-premiere stunt show, with the actor getting in some some of the action alongside director David Leitch; the performance was both meta and an homage to the stunts behind Hollywood blockbusters. It was a blast to see how the filmmakers and the theme park crew of stunt actors who work at Universal played off each other; it’s a small industry so it was really cool to see the collaboration in person. For a taste of The Fall Guy (sans Gosling, unfortunately) you can catch the pre-show all summer long before Waterworld .

Elsewhere in the park you can experience the celebration of the Studio Tour’s 60th anniversary, with new stops in the backlot. Now you can see Doc Brown and the DeLorean in Back to the Future ’s Court House Square, experience a new Earthquake section, see a T-rex, and get up close to classic red glamor tram cars with new photo ops.

It’s set to be Universal Orlando’s biggest daytime parade with 13 brand new floats celebrating beloved Universal Pictures releases. “Guests will watch in awe as they see the massive 16-foot Stay Puft Marshmallow Man atop the Ghostbusters float,” according to a press release; and there’s also going to be a “live marching drum line perform the iconic movie score of Jaws alongside a float themed to the film.” Fingers crossed for a Beetlejuice float too.

For fans of drone light shows, no less than 600 will be used during Universal Orlando’s nighttime Cinesational: A Symphonic Spectacular. Starting June 14, the new nighttime show will bring the waters of the Universal Studios Florida lagoon to life with iconic scores and scenes from blockbuster films. It will encompass Universal Orlando’s past, present, and future attractions and will feature movies like Jurassic World , Jaws, Shrek, Ghostbusters, Trolls, Back to the Future, the Universal Monsters films, Transformers, How to Train Your Dragon, E.T., Fast and Furious, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions, The Mummy , and King Kong (but also please, give us more Beetlejuice ) . Through the use of projection, water screens, and buildings guests will be immersed in some of the most breathtaking moments of cinema, which is what we love about the parks.
