What Are My Options?

Three's the charm out here; you can mix and match your mountains with relative ease.

• Snow King Mountain : Known as the “Town Hill,” Snow King Mountain offers a lot for such a small area. The oldest ski area in Wyoming celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2019 and in 2022 a new gondola arrived to take skiers to the summit in style. In addition to skiing, the King is a fun-filled destination for an afternoon of winter activities such as snow tubing and a mountain roller coaster. The hill boasts one of the steepest sustained pitches, top-to-bottom, of any ski area in the lower 48. A favorite lunchtime destination for locals, it hosts many national ski teams during the early season and local, state and regional Alpine races throughout the winter. The King also offers night skiing until 6:30 p.m. The resort opens on December 8th and the season ends late March. Fun Fact: Snow King was also recently named one of the best "Family Ski Resorts for All Ages," by Trips For All Ages.

• Jackson Hole Mountain Resort : The nearly 60-year-old ski area has been named No. 1 in North America in Ski Magazine 's "Best Ski Resorts on Every Continent" in 2023, and named one of Forbes Magazine 's Top 10 Ski Resorts for 2019, the resort also experienced its snowiest winter on record in 2022-23, with almost 600 inches of snow and consistent powder days through closing day. Considered the closest to a European ski experience within the U.S., JHMR boasts acres of expert terrain and out-of-bounds skiing, plus the longest continuous vertical rise of any ski area in the country: 4,139 feet. About 22 minutes by car or bus from the Jackson Town Square , it is home to perhaps North America’s most iconic lift, the bright red Aerial Tram. It boasts the country’s second-longest vertical rise served by a single lift. As a counterpoint to the vast and challenging terrain accessed via the tram, the high-speed Bridger and Sweetwater gondolas offer access to acres of moderate, groomed slopes for the intermediate skier. Lower down where things are simpler, the Teewinot chairlift provides an excellent, peaceful option for beginners to get the practice they need before exploring further. The resort is open from November 24th through the first week of April.

• Grand Targhee Mountain Resort : Located on the typically snowier west side of the Tetons in Alta, Wyoming, the 'Ghee is known for the most powder days of any ski area in the country! Targhee—which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019— is tucked away on the western slope of the Tetons above Driggs, Idaho, but actually resides in the very last edge of Wyoming. With a vertical drop of 2,270 feet, it offers a mellower atmosphere with excellent skiing for all abilities and plenty of challenges if you look for them. Grand Targhee is about an hour's drive from Jackson, accessed via the scenic Teton Pass/Hwy 22 which starts in Wilson, Wyoming, and ends in Victor, Idaho. Targhee is one of the least crowded resorts you'll ever ski. The gladed skiing is excellent and there are plenty of forested areas to confidently explore. And did we mention the epic powder? The resort is open from November 17th to late April.

Traveler Tip: If you'd rather not bring your own skis, boots, and poles with you, there are several places in town where you can rent great equipment and of course, rental gear is available at each resort.

When's a Good Time To Go?

Each month offers its own brand of skiing goodness. Things are relatively quiet in December/early January at all three resorts, affording you the chance to claim a trail all to yourself and little-to-no lift lines. Bonuses at each mountain are fireworks displays and torchlight parades on New Year's Eve. At Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, we're told the locals working there have nicknamed January "Manurary," as there seem to be numerous men coming out that month for guys-only ski weeks. February and March bring more families, as well as the start of spring skiing. Come mid-March and April you can multi-task by both skiing and working on your tan!

The Last Word

Skiing/snowboarding in Jackson Hole is legendary and you won’t regret a moment of your trip here. Every powder hound knows Jackson Hole is famous for its “cowboy powder,” so come out and experience it for yourself. You may never ski anywhere else again!

Traveler Tip: Prepare for high altitude . With the town of Jackson above 6,200 feet and the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Aerial Tram taking skiers and snowboarders to an elevation of 10,450 feet, some travelers to the area may experience difficulty adjusting to the altitude. And the common misconception that drinking less water is OK because of the area’s cold climate can sometimes add to this problem. If anything, more water should be consumed to stay ahead of the ill effects of altitude sickness. To stay hydrated, you may want to limit caffeine and alcohol consumption as well.

Lastly, here is a great article on what to have in your ski jacket to be prepared and hydrated.

5 days in jackson hole: a first-timer’s guide.

5 DAY FIRST TIMERS GUIDE: JACKSON HOLE, WY

Jackson Hole Wyoming First Timer's Guide

Day 1: Fly into Jackson Airport and get settled into your accommodations

Featuring non-stop service from 20 major U.S. cities, getting to Jackson Hole has never been easier. Once you’ve arrived at the airport (the only airport located within the boundaries of a National Park), you’re just a quick 15- to 30-minute shuttle or drive to your accommodations, depending on where you’re staying.

For ultimate convenience to the slopes, we recommend staying in Teton Village, which is located at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. On a powder day, Teton Village guests can easily hop in the tram line early, beating the downtown-based skiers and snowboarders. Staying at Teton Village’s Moose Creek provides guests with all the comforts of home in three- or four-bedroom townhomes, plus ski in ski out access via the Moose Creek chairlift and complimentary shuttle service to the base of the mountain.

After getting unpacked and exploring your Moose Creek townhouse, relish your first Jackson Hole dinner at Osteria, in Hotel Terra , or Spur, in Teton Mountain Lodge , which are both located in Teton Village.

For additional legendary Jackson Hole runs, explore Alta Chutes, The Hobacks, Expert Chutes, or the Cirque off the Sublette Quad Chairlift or Tower Three Chutes, Paintbrush, or Riverton Bowl off the Thunder chair.

Toast your terrain feats with a famous spicy margarita at the Mangy Moose, located in the base area. Featuring an eclectic mix of Western and ski décor, including a stuffed Moose that hangs from the lofted ceiling, the Moose is often referred to as the quintessential après-ski hangout and for good reason. The drinks are well endowed with booze, the apps—like the nachos—hit the spot after a long day on the slopes and the live music is rockin’.

“If you’re looking for an epicurean après-ski, head to Bin 22, in downtown Jackson, for wine and small plates.” —Gloria Saiya-Woods, Mountain Travel Expert, 800-610-8911×2028

Day 4: Give your legs a break and experience a snowmobile excursion or winter wildlife tour in Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Park

In Jackson Hole, you’re just a couple miles from Grand Teton National Park and about 90 minutes from the United States’ beloved natural treasure, Yellowstone. Take a day away from the slopes to explore the epic winter sights offered at these phenomenal national parks. The best way to cover the most distance and increase your odds of seeing wildlife, like buffalo, wolves, elk, deer, and birds of prey, is to explore the parks via snowcoach or snowmobile.

If you're looking for a half-day wildlife tour, opt for a snowcoach or snowmobile excursion to nearby Grand Teton National Park. | Photo: Jackson Home Mountain Resort

If you’re looking for a half-day tour, ask a Mountain Travel Expert about the four-hour luxury van tour to Grand Teton National Park with Scenic Safaris, and if you’ve been dying to see the Old Faithful geyser in its wintertime splendor, have them sign you up for the 12-hour Yellowstone snowcoach tour. The more adventurous can experience Grand Teton National Park via a half-day snowmobile tour, and the uber adventurous can spar with the elements on a full-day snowmobile tour to Old Faithful.

“Visitors are so close to the parks and should really take a day to snowmobile either in to Yellowstone or Teton National Park.” —Ann Denney, Mountain Travel Expert, 800-610-8911×3657

Day 5: Hire a mountain guide to take you into Jackson’s renowned sidecountry terrain

In 1999, Jackson Hole made a trailblazing move: The resort opened backcountry gates along the boundary line, providing powder-hungry skiers with new access to thousands of additional acres of sidecountry terrain. These days, Jackson Hole boasts seven gates located along the upper reaches of the resort. If you’re comfortable navigating variable terrain, trees and traversing slopes, then you can sign up for a Jackson Hole guided backcountry tour. Guides will provide instruction and use of avalanche equipment; they’ll evaluate snow safety and help you get to the secret stashes that only the locals know about.

You and your guide can decide where to go based on your comfort, fitness, and skill level, but some of Jackson Hole’s most popular sidecountry zones include Four Shadows or No Shadows to Rock Springs, which is situated in Bridger Teton National Forest. Both routes lead back to the resort via the Hobacks, so as long as your legs can take it, you can enjoy lift-served sidecountry laps all day long.

Take advantage of Jackson Hole's epic sidecountry skiing and book a guided tour. | Photo: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

If you’re still feeling energetic as the day is coming to a close, send off your most epic ski vacation yet with a great meal or some good ol’ fashioned revelry, depending on your style. If you haven’t dined in town yet, make a point of doing that on your last night.

“Trio An American Bistro is one of my favorites. Hayden’s Post is the new restaurant in the Snow King Resort. You know it’s good because it has become a locals’ hangout and offers live music.” —Laurel Ann Nelson, Mountain Travel Expert, 800-610-8911×3043

From dancing at Stagecoach in Wilson (Thursday is disco night) to live bluegrass at the Silver Dollar at the Wort Hotel and line dancing at Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, both in downtown Jackson, there’s no shortage of nightlife in Jackson Hole.

Become a part of Jackson Hole’s history and start planning your ski trip today! Our Mountain Travel Experts can help you customize and book your flights, rental cars, lodging and more. They’re standing by at 800-610-8911 . You can also get started by filling out a form for a  free custom quote .

Before visiting, I knew very little about Jackson Hole, Wyoming, but I did know that it was steep and expensive and that there was a cowboy bar somewhere.

And I wasn’t wrong, exactly. But I had a lot to learn, and my study session came this February when I finally got to ski the Wild, Wild West.

Sure, it’s starting to resemble Aspen in that eight-figure houses are popping up seemingly overnight, but don’t let that bother you: skiing is for everyone. Jackson’s skiing and overall ambiance are well worth the trip to Cowboy County.

I live in New York City, where it isn’t uncommon to hear city folk talk about this elusive cowboy-turned-ski town far out west, and I knew I had to check it out for myself. I traveled in tandem with my boyfriend, arriving on the Tuesday after President’s Day. Crowds had significantly receded from the holiday weekend, but the town was certainly still abuzz with out-of-towners like ourselves.

The Mountain:

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort boasts 2,500 acres of skiable terrain across two mountains, Après Vous and Rendezvous. It is an abundantly special place. It’s also challenging, but like every solid relationship, the more work you put in, the better the result. As it stands, Jackson Hole’s terrain is 50 percent expert, 4 percent intermediate, and 10 percent beginner, so you and your posse should be confident skiers.

As far as notable runs go, you probably know about Corbet’s Couloir, which looks worse in photos and videos than when standing on top. (Before you ask, no, I didn’t drop in. It was closed every time I went up there.) Corbet’s Couloir is one of the resort’s parcels of double black diamond runs and the only marked double black from the top of the tram.

Corbet's Coulir viewing from the tram.

Aside from that, JHMR is a true skier’s mountain (even though they allow snowboarding). The mountain’s layout is really built for those on two instead of one plank, and with the multiple peaks and traverses acting as mountain expressways, you’ll quickly see why. I skied on a pair of Rossignol Black Ops Dreamers ( one of the Top Women’s Value Skis of 2022 ), a perfect all-mountain ski that was equipped to handle the variable terrain.

Before visiting, I didn’t know that Jackson Hole gets some funky weather. The phenomenon known as temperature inversion often causes the mountain temperatures to be warmer than the valley, which makes wearing layers—and shedding them—part of the gig. (You can trust me on this because I am always cold, and even I had to take a few runs without mittens.)

We started day one at midmountain after riding up Sweetwater Gondola and taking a few zippy blue laps. One thing that became clear is that Jackson Hole is tough. A lot of the double blues, like Upper Sundance or Laramie, could be considered expert terrain in other mountains, but the thigh burn and adrenaline pumping will fuel you through at least lunch. It’s worth noting that JHMR has one of the lowest base areas out west, with an elevation of 6,311 feet, while the summit reaches 10,450 feet.

I found my favorite spot on the far side (skier’s left), on Après Vous Mountain. There were no lift lines on the quad, which can sometimes be a complaint during peak holidays. Also, an underrated part of the Après Vous area is that skiers are treated to a prime view of the planes taking off and landing at the airport in the valley.

Girl stands with brown jacket on ski slope with neon yellow poles, pink gloves, and blue goggles.

After we were nice and warmed up, we traversed skiers right on the Togwotee Pass Traverse and continued onto the Thunder Quad area, which is almost always colder than Après Vous. This is a great spot to find and ski smaller bowls and for Deadheads like myself who cannot pass up a few runs on Jerry’s Way. If the snow is good, Paint Brush is steep, fast, and a ton of fun. With a vertical drop of 4,139 feet, most of the mountain feels this way.

A day at Jackson Hole isn’t complete without a trip up to the top of the tram. While the terrain off of the tram is for advanced to expert skiers, anyone can take the roundtrip to snap photos of the Tetons and enjoy a waffle at Corbet’s Cabin. When you’re looking to return to the base either to finish up the day or hop in line for the tram, take one of the steep but scenic Hoeback runs down. Additionally, the resort features an open backcountry gate system, granting access to over 3,000 acres of backcountry terrain, including Cody Bowl and Rock Springs Bowl, two popular backcountry spots. If you’re heading out of bounds, you’ll need the right equipment—beacon, shovel, and probe—and knowledge of how to use it, so come prepared.

Ski patrol in front of Corbett's Cabin in Jackson Hole

Rarely does a place you’ve heard about and seen so many photos of live up to the expectation, but Jackson did for me. I’ve been to plenty of ski towns before, but none have that Final Frontier vibe like Jackson. From the (authentic and actually used) hitching rails to the Teton-inspired architecture, the place feels different and intently memorable.

One main difference from other comparable ski towns is that the town of Jackson is about a 20-minute drive from the ski resort. The mountain sits atop Teton Village, a significantly smaller “census-designated place” with a few off-hand restaurants, condos, and mountain amenities. If you’re looking for more than a vacation rental home with a kitchen, you’ll probably find yourself more keen to stay in Jackson—and that’s exactly what we did.

I chose not to rent a car, which was a great decision since most hotels offer shuttle services between the town and the ski resort, so a car is unnecessary. The town is also extremely walkable (I’m a New Yorker: You can trust me on this one). The entire town is just under three square miles, but the downtown area is just about one square mile. Also, unlike a lot of other mountain towns, it’s flat.

Getting There:

I was able to snag a superb mileage deal with Delta with just one layover, which, coming from the East Coast, seemed like a no-brainer (this later did result in a missed connection and lost bag, but it was on the way back, so no harm no foul). But without this deal, the flights are expensive (the airport is inside of Grand Teton National Park, so airline taxes are high); driving from Salt Lake is technically an option, but clocking in at around five hours and winter weather can make this dangerous. I advise watching for off-peak travel deals or using points and miles to help bring down the cost.

Where To Stay:

We stayed at The Cloudveill (the average nightly rate ranges from $400-$700) because of its prime location in the town of Jackson (we could walk everywhere). In fact, it’s the only hotel in the historic town square. They also offer a shuttle service with three options to leave in the morning and three to return in the afternoon. They even paid for an Uber when the shuttle had a last-minute malfunction and could not pick us up.

The lobby at The Cloudveil has a big wooden ceiling and rustic feeling.

The Cloudveil is accentuated with a modern Western flair. The interior is reminiscent of Jackson’s untamed surroundings while providing modern amenities tailored to skiers, like a mini pantry on every floor filled with trail mix and light snacks, hot tea, filtered water, and La Croix seltzers. Finish your ski day with a crisp seltzer in the outdoor hot tub or a swim in the pool.

Where To Eat:

There are many places to eat in Jackson that are genuinely worth your time and money. Persephone Bakery and Snake River Roasting Company are excellent for daily caffeine needs and breakfast (especially if you need a pastry to start your day).

The Bistro is worth a dinner reservation if you are looking for a slightly more upscale option that won’t break the bank. They serve quality French cuisine and are happy to accommodate dietary restrictions. They also have a daily sit-down brunch featuring a mimosa cart. Code Red offers something most ski towns lack: tasty, fast-casual Mexican that fuels you without needing a reservation. I’m also willing to go on the record when I say the best après food is chips and guac, and you won’t be disappointed with theirs.

Finish the night with some ice cream at Cream + Sugar . They have some seriously creamy ice cream, especially in the non-dairy category.

Where To Après:

If you’re looking for on-mountain après, ski under the tram toward the Mangy Moose . The legendary bar and restaurant are decorated to look like your great-grandmother’s tag sale (in the best way), and there’s frequently live music and consistently great drinks and food. Don’t sleep on the bodega downstairs, either. They’ve got everything you need, like housemade canned margs, Fillo’s Tamales , and a full wine cellar. You can also grab merch because what is a ski town bar without merch? The moose is absolutely loose!

The main dining room at the Mangy Moose with lots of old rusty signs, skiing memorabilia, and big windows with a blue sky shining through.

Oh, and that cowboy bar? It’s none other than Jackson’s Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, a crossover sensation of ticky-tacky-tourist and authentic Western saloon. Where that line between the two is drawn, I’ll never know. Saddle up to the bar (literally…the barstools are old horse saddles) and order a signature cocktail like the Ranch Hand with Topo Chico or the Dr. Pepper Old Fashioned. The drinks are strong, so leave your horse at home and walk back later.

Sidequests:

Take an extra day and book a wildlife tour at the National Elk Refuge. We went with JH Eco Tours , and they made for the best non-ski day of our trip. Upon pickup, the first thing we were asked was, “What types of animals do you want to see?” our guide made it his mission to see almost everything on our list. We saw packs of wolves, moose, bison, and elk. This is a fantastic activity for the entire family and really makes you appreciate the plethora of nature surrounding the area.

Want more skiing? You’d be remiss to visit Jackson Hole and not spend any time at Snow King Mountain . While it’s undeniably smaller and less flashy than its big sister down the road, Snow King is a perfect fill for a day you want to sleep in or explore the town of Jackson but not sacrifice a full day of skiing. The resort is in the town of Jackson, so there’s no need for a commute, and you’ll likely have the entire mountain and some pretty epic views of the Elk Refuge all to yourself.

Anything I’d Do Differently:

No. But if I had to answer, I’d consider visiting a little further from President’s Day. Other than that, I think I had a pretty perfect experience.

Worth A Return Visit?:

Absolutely. Between the humbling mountains, the plethora of wild animals, and the Western spirit, it was easy to see why this place is on so many skiers’ bucket lists. Jackson Hole’s expansive terrain is home to 131 named runs; since I didn’t hit every one, I guess it’s time to start planning my next trip.

Resort Skiing

voyage ski jackson hole

Our version of downtime.

Jackson Hole has three ski resorts, each offering completely unique views, terrain, and experiences.

There’s a reason some people dedicate their lives to skiing. Whether carving down fresh corduroy on a bluebird day, storm skiing in powder so deep it fills your mouth (because, as much as you try, you can’t not smile in conditions like these), or enjoying a groomer with friends, skiing is exhilarating. Sliding down a mountain on snow, you can’t help but be in the moment, reveling in the crisp alpine air and potential for hot chocolate after the next run.

Wyoming’s first ski resort was in Jackson Hole: Snow King Mountain opened with a single rope tow in 1939. Jackson Hole is also home to Wyoming’s first (and only) tram: Big Red at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort started carrying skiers to the 10,450-foot summit of Rendezvous Mountain in 1965. In 1969, Grand Targhee Resort opened and brought skiing to the west side of the Tetons.

All three of these resorts welcome skiers of all ages and ability levels from November to April and offer distinctly different experiences. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, 12 miles from downtown Jackson, is often included on annual round-ups of the best ski resorts in North America. Its vast and varied terrain includes runs for every type and level of skier, and it has the greatest number of lifts, runs, acreage, and amenities. It’s also home to the world-famous Corbet’s Couloir, a run so steep you have to jump into it, and the Sweetwater Gondola, which is dedicated to beginner and intermediate skiers.

Grand Targhee Resort is in Wyoming, but you have to drive about an hour up and over Teton Pass and through Idaho to get to it. It’s famous for its low-density, high-fluff powder and local ski hill feel. Families love its low-key vibe.

Snow King Resort is the smallest of the three resorts and the unofficial “town hill”—just five blocks from the Town Square. It’s great for visitors who want skiing to be just one of many activities while on vacation in Jackson (rather than have their entire vacation be focused on skiing), and its magic carpet at the summit makes it one of the most picturesque places to take your first turns. Snow King is also where the local Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club racers train; its steep, north-facing runs make for a racer’s playground.

How to have a great resort skiing experience in Jackson Hole

Plan your lift access ahead of time. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort limits the number of skiers on the mountain on any given day; day lift tickets and spots for Ikon passholders often sell out in advance. To ensure you get to ski on the day you want, pre-purchase your day tickets. Resort season passholders aren’t required to make reservations. At all three resorts, pre-purchasing tickets can also be less expensive than buying day-of lift tickets.

Use public transportation

If possible, carpool or use public transportation. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s app has real-time information on how full its parking lots are, and prices range from $15 to $40. Parking at Snow King and Grand Targhee Resorts is free.

Stay hydrated

Make sure to drink water throughout the day. Staying hydrated doesn’t only keep headaches at bay, but it also helps prevent your muscles from cramping.

Give your legs a break

Stop for the day before your legs are tired. Many ski injuries happen on the last run of the day when muscles are their most fatigued.

If the temperature in the valley is scary cold and skiing seems like a bad idea, know that in the winter, Jackson Hole often gets temperature inversions. It might be zero degrees or colder on the valley floor, but a balmy 20-some degrees at the top of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort tram or Grand Targhee’s Dreamcatcher lift. Before bailing on a day of skiing because it’s too cold, make sure to look at the weather conditions at 10,000 feet.

voyage ski jackson hole

Live by the wild rules

Utilize public transportation.

The START (Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit) Bus is the local public transportation system that provides both a free in-town shuttle as well as a paid service to Teton Village, Wyoming; Teton Valley, Idaho; and Star Valley, Wyoming. With numerous bus stops strategically located around town, it’s a sustainable option for local commutes.

Stay Hydrated

The easiest way to take care of yourself in Jackson Hole is to stay hydrated. You can get dehydrated at any elevation, but it’s particularly easy to do at higher elevations. Being active in the mountain sun and wind can exacerbate dehydration. Dehydration can range from a dry mouth to a much more serious problem. Every summer, the Teton County Search and Rescue team responds to several rescues from dehydrated adventurers. How much water you should drink depends on your weight and activity level, but aim for 4 liters a day. If you’re active or drink a lot of caffeine and alcohol, drink more water. Extra credit for adding electrolytes to your water.

Know Your Limits

Know your limits, communicate with your group, have a plan, and know when to turn around or scale back your adventure. Cell reception is limited in the mountains, so consider having a backcountry GPS device or downloading the backcountry SOS app.

Skiing in Jackson Hole | Complete Guide for Beginners and Intermediates

I f you are a snowboarder or skier in the United States, chances are you have heard rumblings about the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Jackson Hole has a bit of a reputation for its steep runs and extreme exposure. And it’s worthy of that reputation.

Skiing in Jackson Hole gives you street cred among other skiers, but that doesn’t mean you have to be an expert skier to navigate this mountain. It may be known for its challenging terrain, but don’t shy away from a ski trip to Jackson Hole simply because you are a beginner or an intermediate skier.

About Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is located in the Teton Range in Western Wyoming. The region is a mecca for adventure seekers in summer – as the gateway to both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park .

In winter, you’ll find so many winter activities to do in Jackson Hole – even if you aren’t a skier or snowboarder.

This world-renowned resort offers skiers and snowboarders 2,500 acres of skiable terrain, encompassing 133 named trails and an astounding vertical drop of 4,139 feet, making it one of the steepest ski resorts in North America.

With an annual average snowfall of 459 inches, it guarantees a winter wonderland for visitors.

Can beginners ski at Jackson Hole?

Jackson Hole is not a beginner’s mountain. In fact, it is probably the most challenging mountain I’ve ever skied.

There is a lot of exposure. Cliffs and boulders can sneak up on you and make even an experienced skier a little nervous.

While the mountain is known for its challenging terrain and backcountry opportunities, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is also a fun playground for beginning skiers, if you know where to go.  In fact, I learned how to ski as an adult in Jackson Hole, and it is also where we first started teaching our toddler how to ski .

Once you’ve been skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming you could probably ski anything with ease.

Mountain Rating System for Skiing in Jackson Hole

Like most mountains in North America, the runs in Jackson Hole are all color rated.

Green runs are the easiest, blues are intermediate runs, and blacks are experienced.

In Jackson, you’ll also notice “double blues”, which fall somewhere between intermediate and experienced, and “double blacks” which are for expert skiers only.

Jackson is the first mountain where I’ve actually seen traverses with a black rating. A traverse is usually a flat narrow trail that takes you from one run to another.

What makes a traverse a black, you ask? Part of the reason may be that the traverses only access black chutes and black ski runs.

There is also the small, insignificant fact that along one side of the traverse there will be a giant cliff that, should you accidentally ski off, you would inevitably fall to your death.

So, yeah, black traverses.

What’s a traverse?! What is a green? Check out the most common skiing phrases you’ll hear on the slopes and what they mean.

Of the 133 named trails at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, half are rated black or double black, 40 percent are blues or intermediate runs, and only 10 percent of the runs are greens, or beginner runs.

Again, if you are a beginner or intermediate skier, don’t write off Jackson Hole on statistics alone.

Keep reading to find out the best places to play around on the mountain as a beginner or intermediate skier.

The tram at Jackson Hole

The resort’s Aerial Tram, with a capacity of 100 passengers, transports visitors to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain , offering a breathtaking view of the Grand Teton.

While it is worth taking the tram to the top of the mountain for the view alone – and to eat world-famous waffles on top of the world at Corbet’s Cabin, the tram at Jackson Hole accesses expert terrain only. If you are a beginner or intermediate skier, leave your skis at the base and head up the tram after the mountain closes, then ride the tram back down.

Off the tram, there are ungroomed blacks, double blacks, and gates that access backcountry skiing. However, it also offers the best views of the valley and the back side of the Grand Teton. Stunning views!

The tram also accesses the “scariest ski slope in America”, Corbet’s Couloir .

We have not personally skied it, but there is a fun, easier run for intermediate skiers right below it where we stood and watched the crazy, extreme skiers risk their lives.

Terrain variety and other elements for intermediate and advanced skiers

From moguls, to chutes, to tree runs, Jackson Hole offers it all. If tree skiing is what you seek there are some great glade runs off the Teton chair lift .

Saratoga Bowl is also known for its great tree runs.

For those looking for something really adventurous, there are two terrain parks (one expert, one beginner), a race course, and 4 Burton Stash Parks, which combine natural terrain features and creative wooden elements.

Intermediate skiers will find plenty of blue and double blue runs off the Après Vous and Casper lifts as well as the top of the Gondola.

Skiing in Jackson Hole for Beginners

At first glance, it doesn’t look like there is a lot of ski-able terrain for the novice skier or beginner skier.

However, I actually learned to ski in Jackson Hole, so I wouldn’t discourage beginners from trying out the mountain.

All the green runs are located at the bottom of the mountain off the Teewinot and Eagle’s Rest chairs .

While there are only a few marked, wide open green runs, you’ll find lots of runs that will help beginners get more comfortable with varying terrain. These runs aren’t on the trail map , so you won’t know about them unless you take lessons or have a child in ski school.

Little runs tucked away in the woods like Flying Squirrel and Base Drop can help novice skiers get used to the concept of chutes.

While Bison Bumps and Wookie Wiggle will help new skiers get used to bumpy snow and grasp the concept of moguls and adventure trails through the woods.

The mountain resort even has a run called Sunken Ship that takes you through a pirate ship hidden in the woods.

We had been skiing at Jackson Hole for years and never knew these runs existed until we skied with our daughter after picking her up from ski school. She showed us all the runs she had conquered that day, and we had so much fun skiing them together as a family.

To find them, ask a mountain guide or look for little signs with cartoon characters that indicate a kid’s adventure run.

Here is a map of the lower base area marking the adventure runs . Although they are marked as kid’s adventure runs, adults will enjoy them, as well.

Ski School and Lessons

If visiting Jackson Hole with kids , the children’s ski school is located in the same building as childcare, which makes it  convenient if you have a child in daycare and in ski school.

The ski school has a private magic carpet for beginners that is safely separated from the rest of the public ski runs.

Once kids are old enough and experienced enough to venture onto a chair lift, they will spend most of their time on the greens at the base of the mountain, until their ski instructor feels they are ready for more challenging terrain.

If you are teaching your kids to ski yourself , this is where you will spend most of your time, as well.

I would definitely recommend taking lessons if you plan to visit. Not only did ski lessons help both me and our daughter learn to ski quicker, but for kids particularly it is a lot of fun. Our daughter earned a sticker on her helmet for every one of the kid’s adventure runs she went down.

I learned to ski in Jackson Hole as an adult. The instructors are very cautious and will not take you or your children outside their skill or comfort level. They are also very knowledgeable.

Within a couple days of taking lessons, I was skiing blues in Jackson Hole. And within the same ski season, I was handling black runs at other mountains with caution but ease.

Still, to avoid a ski injury on the slopes you need to make sure you are ready and have the necessary skills for the next level of runs.

Once you know you or your child can ski in Jackson Hole, every other mountain will seem much less intimidating!

Little Wranglers Child Care in Jackson Hole

NOTE: The Day Care Program will NOT be open during the 2023-2024 ski season .

When our daughter was still a baby, child care was the single most important aspect for us when skiing. We wanted to know that our little one was well taken care of and happy in day care.

Child care in Jackson Hole set the standard for exceptional day care at all mountain resorts.

It is expensive, as are all ski resort daycares, but it includes your child’s snacks and meals. If your child is still a baby and needs formula, expressed breast milk, or pureed foods, you will need to supply those.

Check out these tips if you need to bring any of those liquids on the plane.

The Kids Ranch is located inside the Cody building, up the stairs adjacent to the gondola.

There seemed to be more than an adequate amount of staff members in the daycare center when we dropped our daughter off. I counted at least five people in the Little Wranglers room.

Perhaps putting me even more at ease, there wasn’t a single baby who was upset or crying. They were all playing or being held, and perfectly content.

When we picked up our daughter at the end of the day, she was always smiling and happy. The staff gave us a detailed report of her day, what she ate, when she ate, her diaper changes, her naps, how much she drank, what she did, and who she played with.

The staff was super attentive, and I could tell our little one enjoyed her time there. Her face says it all!

FAQs about Skiing in Jackson Hole for the first time

If you are planning to travel to Jackson Hole for the first time, it is natural to have a few questions that go beyond just skiing and what to expect on the mountain.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about visiting Jackson Hole on a ski trip.

Is Jackson Hole expensive for Skiing?

Skiing, in general, is expensive. Unfortunately, skiing in Jackson Hole is no different. The town, the food, the lodging, and lift tickets are pricey.

A one-day lift ticket will set you back about $200. If you plan to ski multiple days, it may be worth investing in an IKON Pass and reserving your dates.

Another option would be to ski at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort one day and then check out Snow King Mountain Resort in the town of Jackson. More of a local ski mountain, this smaller mountain still offers some steep terrain but a lift ticket is only about $50 a day.

Kids will also enjoy the snow tubing and mountain coaster at Snow King.

What is the best time of year to ski in Jackson Hole?

Jackson Hole receives a reliable amount of snow each winter, which is prime for skiing.

If you are a beginner or intermediate skier, even early in the season, you should have ample coverage on the runs.

However, if you want to ski the hard stuff at Jackson Hole, you may want to wait until January, February or March to ski. The more challenging runs require more coverage (ie: more snow) before they can open up.

Where is the best place to stay on a Jackson Hole ski trip?

There are a lot of great hotels in Jackson Hole to choose from. If you want to stay at the base of the mountain, look for a hotel in Teton Village.

The Four Seasons offers ski-in ski-out access, while Hotel Terra offers ski-in, but requires a short walk to the lift at the beginning of your day.

Another option, which is slightly cheaper, is to stay in the town of Jackson, Wyoming, about 15-20 minutes away from the mountain resort by car.

Although it requires a drive or shuttle ride to the mountain, there are a lot of fun things to do in Downtown Jackson after the mountain closes.

You can check out the iconic Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, take a stroll through Jackson Town Square which is illuminated in white lights during wintertime making it a great Christmas destination .

Also visit the Snake River Brewery for a locally made craft beer and live music.

Jackson Hole Ski Resort Overview

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JH) in Wyoming, spanning 2,500 acres and two mountains, resides atop many a skier and snowboarder’s bucket list. The technical terrain, jaw-dropping scenery, old-west vibe, nightlife, and fine dining are all reasons to consider a trip to this legendary mountain. The resort consistently bags top honors and awards as a destination resort despite the notoriously challenging travel logistics.

Along with Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole is one of the only famous cities in Wyoming, a state that some people still consider to be on the frontier of the American West. Contrary to the common perception that Jackson Hole is a mountain for experts, the resort has lately been upping its game by adding beginner and intermediate terrain and focusing on the Mountain Sports School experience.

The Sweetwater Gondola, Solitude Station Learning Center, and Casper Quad provide beginners and intermediates with excellent access to appropriate terrain. Jackson Hole is an amazing winter trip for groups or families of wildly different abilities and comfort levels. For experts, there’s always the 4,139 feet of vertical drop, endless backcountry access, the aerial tram, and immense quantities of steep (and often deep) terrain. If that’s not enough to make you drool, consider the 459 inches of annual snowfall and book your next trip.

Teton Village is a 12-mile, 20-minute ride to Jackson. Bus service runs regularly between the areas, enabling easy access to a variety of accommodations, tons of fun nightlife, and fine dining options in town. Jackson Hole participates in the Ikon Pass and the Mountain Collective .

Staying at Teton Village removes the need for a car as there are plenty of shuttles and a reliable bus service into the town of Jackson.

Grand Teton National Park, which sits adjacent to Jackson Hole, showcases the grandeur of the Teton Mountain Range and includes a diverse range of ecosystems, pristine lakes, and rivers.

When it’s time to warm up, gobble waffles at 10,450 feet in Corbet’s Cabin. Locals recommend ordering these toppings: half brown sugar butter & half peanut butter bacon.

For an indulgent night in, head to the Bodega in Teton Village and order a slushie (a frozen alcoholic slushie) and grab a delicious take-and-bake pizza and some amazing locally crafted ice cream sandwiches.

If the tram line looks long, make moves for the Sweetwater Gondola and connect over to the Casper Lift to gain elevation.

Consider hiring a guide for groups of up to 5 with the Jackson Hole Mountain Sports School. Enjoy line-cutting privileges and remove any stress around navigating this huge mountain as your guide shows you the goods and secret stashes.

If you head into Jackson's excellent backcountry terrain, be sure to check a current avalanche forecast have a buddy, and the proper equipment and knowledge to venture beyond the resort boundary.

Snow King Mountain is an alternate resort option (along with Grand Targhee), for family activities outside of Jackson Hole Resort. (Near One Town Hill) It's more of a "local resort" but has amazing night skiing, the infamous cowboy coaster, and a phenomenal tubing park with king tubes!
