MORE ABOUT GUIDED CAMPING VACATIONS

What’s included on a wildland trekking camping tour.

Our signature basecamp tours are all-inclusive camping vacation tours to premier national parks and wilderness destinations. We provide local transportation, camping gear, wonderful meals, permits and fees, safety equipment including extensive first-aid kits and emergency communication devices, expert guides and more! One differentiating inclusion on our camping vacations is the natural and cultural intepretation the guides provide that help bring the national park(s) to life in a way that’s different from camping and hiking on your own.

WHY JOIN A WILDLAND Camping Trip?

There are many reasons our guests join our camping trips. Here are some common ones:

  • Many guests prefer hiking and camping with local, professional guides to increase the safety and enjoyment of their national park adventure.
  • Some guests are new to camping and don’t own the gear, so joining a tour makes practical and financial sense.
  • For many of our guests, a specific camping and hiking vacation (such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, or Utah’s national parks) has been something they’ve wanted to do for a long time, and they want to make the very most of it.
  • Some folks are most interested in the educational aspect of learning about the area they’re hiking through, which is a huge perk of joining a professionally guided tour provided by a reputable company.
  • Some guests join our camping tours for the ease and convenience of letting us handle the logistics so they can focus 100% on enjoying the hiking and camping experience.
  • For most of our guests it’s a combination of some or all of these points that they join our camping trips.

CHOOSING THE BEST NATIONAL PARK(S) FOR YOUR CAMPING VACATION

We offer basecamp tours in many mountain and canyon destinations in the USA, and internationally in Iceland. Mountain camping destinations include Yellowstone, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Pacific Northwest (Olympic and Mount Rainier National Parks). Canyon destinations include Grand Canyon, Utah’s amazing national parks (Zion, Bryce and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument), Sedona’s Red Rock Country, Death Valley, and Joshua Tree. If you’re looking for a summer trip, we recommend the mountain national parks and the Grand Canyon, where we camp at high elevation. If you’re interested in a trip in the spring and fall, the best options are high desert destinations like Sedona and Utah. And winter trips are best in lower destinations like Joshua Tree and Death Valley. For more help choosing the right trip, feel free to call us  800-715-HIKE (4453)

When to Join a Camping Tour

One of the wonderful aspects of Wildland Trekking basecamp tours is that you can find an excellent option for any time of year. In the spring we have prime options in Utah, Arizona and California. In the summer months we offer amazing camping trips with incredible daily hiking adventures in Montana/Wyoming, Colorado, California, Washington, Utah, Arizona. In the fall you’ll find the same shoulder season destinations that we have in the spring again in their peak seasons. And, finally, in the winter we have desert hiking and camping trips in California (Death Valley and Joshua Tree) and in Patagonia, Chile that help Wildland guests make the most of the winter months.

The bottom line is that if you want to get out and explore the world’s amazing national parks and wild areas on foot, i.e. hiking and trekking, and would like an outdoor experience with some of the creature comforts of modern life (showers, cold drinks, cell service, great meals), then a Wildland Trekking basecamp tour is an excellent option year round. Deserts, canyons, mountains and seashores all have unique ecosystems that make year round, outdoor hiking vacations not just possible, but excellent!

Your Guide to Adventure

In an effort to preserve the fragile ecosystem of Denali National Park & Preserve, the National Park Service has limited access on the park road for private vehicles. To experience the best of the Park, we suggest taking one of our fascinating and awe-inspiring interpretive land tours. The land tours give you the opportunity for full-time wildlife spotting – and also allow you the chance to sit back, relax and listen to your Interpretive Guide share stories about the history, culture and geography that surrounds you.

Our Tours are led by seasoned and expert guides who will provide in-depth narrative of the flora and fauna of Denali National Park. Please see our chart below to help select the right tour for you. Remember-the more time you spend in the park, the greater your chance of seeing the "big five" wildlife (Dall Sheep, grizzly bear, caribou, moose and wolf).

Tour buses are comfortable, offering bucket seating and tours are ADA access available. We recommend pre-booking your boxed lunch. Park entrance fees are included in tour prices.

Add to My Trip

Among the great many things that make Denali National Park such a unique destination is just how little of it is accessible by road. A single gravel road goes into the six-million-acre park and only travelers on trips like the Tundra Wilderness Tour have the chance to experience it. This fully narrated guided tour takes visitors 42 scenic miles along the Park Road to the historic Murie Cabin.

Explore the park with a certified naturalist guide.

Guests on the Tundra Wilderness Tour enjoy a half day with a certified naturalist guide/driver on a modified school bus outfitted with coach seats. With all eyes peeled, chances are good for spotting several of the park's wildlife residents along the road: A shaggy grizzly sow watching over rambunctious spring cubs, a lone bull moose browsing in thick willows, a rare full-curl Dall sheep bedded down high upon a craggy ridge.

Along the way the tour stops for ample photo opportunities as well as scheduled rest breaks. Picturesque highlights include the craggy cliffside of Cathedral Mountain, wildlife rich Sable Pass, and braided wash of the East Fork River. Your turnaround point is the East Fork Cabin. Also known as the Murie Cabin, you'll have time to explore this rustic shelter and learn about its unique history before making the scenic return trip.

The Tundra Wilderness Tour is fully-narrated by a naturalist guide/driver. The ticket price includes the park entrance fee (adults only). Seats are first-come, first-serve. The tour runs about 5 to 5.5 hours.

What to Bring

A light snack and bottled water is provided, but passengers should bring additional food as there are no concessions available in the park. Bring all gear necessary to comfortably enjoy the Alaskan outdoors, including a rain jacket and pants, warm layers, and insect repellant. Don't forget a camera and binoculars.

Special Instructions

Alaska State Law requires children under age 8 and below 65 pounds to be in a car seat on the bus. A paid ticket is required for all children and infants. Wheelchair accessible buses are available upon request when the reservation is made.

Wilderness Trail Rides

Wrangell National Park Tours Alaska as few have seen it.

Build beautiful, wild country, for your exploration and enjoyment.

Summer schedule Start booking your summer trips today!

Base Camp Trip (June-July) This trip is based out of the main ranch grounds. Here we are focused more on comfort and a good time enjoying the remote wilderness in style. Days are spent hiking, fishing, swimming and horseback riding; flexible to how the group sees fit to enjoy their days. The evenings are filled with dinner and stories around the camp fire, a sauna and hot tub at the creek, and activities to keep us entertained and learning about the area. Enjoy your stay in your own comfortable and traditional wall tent cabin with beds and a small wood stove. This trip is perfect to share with friends, family, or even solo with its variety of activities. Day trips include rides up Horsfeld Creek where gold was originally panned, to Bray Lakes where we will spend the day canoeing and catching fish, or hiking up the Bluff trail for a picnic. Longer days include trips to Klein Creek and Lone Mountain trailing along the volcanic peaks of Wiki and through Beaver Creek. All of the days will finish with homemade meals and decadent desserts made by our camp chef. She keeps the cook cabin smelling sweet with fresh baked goods, coffee, and meals coming out of her wood cook-stove at every turn. This trip is made for memories, laughter, and that curious combination of peace and thrill that nature provides.

Gold Rush Horse Pack Trips (June-July) These adventurous tours follow different courses but both trace the historic mail trails used by packers during the Klondike and Chisana Gold Rushes. This 100 mile trip starts and ends at the main ranch, but the body of the trip is spent traveling via horseback through the vast terrain of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. This trip will take you up the Beaver Creek Valley, over Ophir Pass where the valley extends 360 degrees around. We make our way to the White River, a braided glacial river where we can hope to see vast arrays of wildlife alongside the 12000 foot peaks of Mt. Nazahat, Bona and the Russell Glacier. The next day we follow the main body of the Wrangell's seeing the stunning slopes of Yuker Mountain, Beaver Peak, and Mt. Sulzer. With saddlebags packed, and horses ready this cowboy adventure will take us for a ride. Historic horse packing is a truly unique way to travel. The views from the horse allow us easier sittings of local flora and fauna, and traveling with horses always holds potential for a wildly sensational time. Our horses live in this terrain year round. Their knowledge and experience along these trails takes us sure-footedly through creeks, up passes and bogs that would otherwise make for a strenuous and difficult trip. The beauty, the stories and solemnity cannot be beat. Your guides will provide endless entertainment through stories, facts, and fabulous food around the campfires. Look for Dall's sheep on the vistas, moose in the brush, and spend time learning this landscape's immense history. Join us on horseback through some of the most beautiful and untouched wilderness in the world.

Ride and Raft- (July 31st-August 4th) Are you the type that wants to do it all? This Land and River trip is built for full adventure. Cover forty miles of the most spectacular riding trails on the main body of the Wrangell's and meet our raft at the glacial source. This will be the full horseback experience of riding long days in the saddle and luxury camping under the Alaskan summer sky. We will spend the day riding through fields of fragrant lupine, along towering Beaver Peak, and hoping to spot grizzly mothers with their cubs, wolves, caribou, and moose. Early morning starts with full breakfast and a hand made sack lunch for later in the day. Then we ride our way to the rafts. The start of the river trip is literally the start of the river, and we can walk to the glacier face and see the river emerge from under hundreds of feet of ice. From our riverside camp we will hear the glacier calve and the roar of the river will throb in our ears. After inflating our rafts, waterproofing our gear, and reviewing safety procedures we will head down river with the swift current. An easy day's paddle puts us in the narrowest part of the valley and here we set-up camp for two nights. From this spectacular camp we will have a full day to hike in the mountains, fish a nearby lake, or just relax in the wilderness. The Wrangell's are truly a splendor and we ought to have the whole place to ourselves. Our final paddling day features swift current splashy waves and dramatic scenery. We will be busy steering the boats (everyone paddles) and avoiding the big rocks, but not too busy to stop when we see wildlife river side. After leaving the big peaks behind us we will seek-out a long flat gravel bar for a campsite and improvised runway. Our pilot returns in the morning to shuttle us back towards civilization.

“Absolutely EVERYTHING about this trip was perfect: itinerary, food, lodgings, trip leaders, educational opportunities. A perfect example of why Wilderness Travel will always be our first choice when planning adventures.”
“We were taught so much beyond the usual viewpoint given to a tourist that I felt I had a much deeper understanding of the culture and history than I would have if traveling with a different company.”
“An incredible variety of activities was packed into the trip, yet we never felt rushed. It would be impossible to do what we did in the same period of time without the expertise of WT guides.”

Float over the Serengeti

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Supporting wildlife

Not only does our entire range of wildlife trips promise to give you unforgettable animal experiences, but they also directly support the conservation of wildlife and the people who take care of that wildlife.  So, you can rest assured knowing that the money you spend by travelling with us is reinvested into the protection of the wildlife you see and the communities you visit like the jewellery workshop run by a team of women in Zambia that donates funds for anti-poaching patrols.

Woman wearing a red beanie

Local expert-led tours

Is your lemur knowledge almost non-existent? Do you have any idea about the intricacies of Borneo’s jungle ecosystem? Don’t know the orangutans from the chimpanzees? On an Intrepid trip, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Every wildlife trip includes at least one local wildlife expert – from park rangers knowledgeable about mountain gorillas to indigenous people with a special connection to land - to take you on guided walks, conduct informal sessions, and participate in educational conversations.

Range of experiences

Traditional Game Drives, boat safaris, and nature walks are all par for the course on one of our wildlife trips but at Intrepid, our itineraries delve deeper to provide you with the whole, unique picture. Incorporating a range of different opportunities for travellers to experience the world’s wildlife such as a visit to a Wildlife Forensic Laboratory in Zambia where officials investigate wildlife crimes (just like CSI but for animals!) and learning firsthand about Antarctica’s ecosystem from your onboard marine biologist.

Responsible travel & conservation

We are not only giving back through offering safaris that make a difference but also partnering with conservation projects on the ground to raise awareness and important funding through the Intrepid Foundation.

Animal welfare

At Intrepid, we believe that it’s our responsibility to help preserve the planet for the next generation of travelers, as well as for the communities – and animals – that call these places home. That’s why we’ve worked with World Animal Protection  to create a set of guidelines each and every one of our trips follows.

Our animal welfare pledge

We’ve also partnered with the team at Blood Lions as a commitment to actively working towards a solution to lion exploitation by signing their ‘Born to Live Wild’ pledge.

Visiting animals

We only visit facilities involving wild animals in captivity if the reason for the facility directly helps, and is in the best interest, of the animals involved. For example, rescue centers operating with the highest animal welfare and conservation standards possible.

Visiting the MandaLao Elephant Conservation in Laos

Being a wildlife-friendly traveler

From doing your research to never using animals as a photo prop, there are a few easy ways to become a wildlife-friendly traveler . Join Intrepid co-founder Geoff Manchester and Lek Chailert, the founder of Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, to find out more about Intrepid's ban on elephant rides and what you can do to help protect wildlife on your travels, or check out the partnerships between The Intrepid Foundation and various conservation organizations around the world.

How we help

We actively discourage the participation of travelers in any activities that exploit wild or domestic/working animals. Lately, there’s been a rise in animal-related incidents around the world, and it doesn’t sit well with us. That’s why we have this toolkit in conjunction with World Animal Protection, with the hope that it will help the tourism industry rebuild more ethically during the COVID-caused travel shutdowns.

Park & conservation fees

Did you know a portion of all national park fees (included in your trip price) go back into the conservation for the parks? In some countries, this can be a considerable amount and goes towards park upkeep, wildlife rehabilitation and protection, and funding for park rangers.

Become a Citizen Scientist

Contribute in a very real way on your trip to Antarctica by undertaking scientific studies, recording cloud cover with NASA, participating in the ‘Happy Whale’ initiative (taking photos of whales’ flukes and uploading them to a special database), and conducting seabird surveys.

Our WWF partnership

Embark on an Antarctic adventure with WWF , a conservation organization working to protect endangered habitats and stop climate change, and learn about their non-invasive whale research project from onboard scientists.

Giving back

Our wildlife trips are specifically designed to include local communities, businesses and NGOs that are working to support the conservation of wildlife, or the people protecting the wild.

Meet the experts

Man in a red jacket leaning up against an icy ledge

Alex - Antarctica Expedition Leader

Alex has long held a fascination with the natural world and polar regions. A graduate of Cambridge in Natural Sciences, Alex had been a polar guide for over a decade and is the co-founder of the Polar Citizen Science Collective, an organisation devoted to harnessing the research and data collection power of polar tourism. When not on a ship he can usually be found with skis or sticky rubber on his feet.

Man looking at the camera and smiling with lush greenery in the background.

Twongyeirwe - Head Ranger (Uganda)

Growing up in a family with a conservation background, Twongyeirwe quickly developed a dream of becoming a wildlife ranger, working with mountain gorillas in the forests of Uganda. He's been living that dream for 16 years (and counting), learning about gorilla behaviours, tracking their movements and passing on that knowledge to passionate travellers just as awestruck by the majesty of these animals as he is.

Woman crouching on the ground and smiling at the camera

Jessica - Naturalist Guide (Galapagos Islands)

Jessica grew up surrounded by sea lions, sea turtles, iguanas, amazing landscapes, and friendly people on the Galapagos Islands so it's no surprise she turned to a career teaching people about the diversity, endemism, and the marine life of the region she's loved since she was little. When she's not working, you can find her scuba diving, snorkelling and exploring as much of this magical Ecuadorian world as possible.

Woman wearing a white jacket staring off into the distance

Eva – Citizen Science Coordinator (Polar)

Eva is a polar scientist, with a particular passion for marine mammals. Her love for whales led to her graduating at the top of her class with a Master's in Polar Science from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. Researcher, Naturalist, Photographer, Educator, Surveyor, Skipper and Wildlife Officer, Eva has travelled extensively throughout all 7 continents, but her heart remains in the polar regions.

Wildlife FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a wildlife trip.

Trips on or before 31 December 2022

If your Intrepid trip starts on or before 31 December 2022, you must provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

If you are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons, you may apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. To apply, you must provide a medical certificate from a medical professional.

Children under 18 are exempt. Children aged between 5 and 17 years old must provide proof of either vaccination, recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How safe are wildlife tours?

At Intrepid, the welfare of our people and our travellers is our highest priority, and we never put tours in a potentially harmful or dangerous position. To ensure that all travellers are safe while trekking or visiting wildlife conservation areas, there are a set of rules and regulations that everyone must observe at all times, which you'll be briefed on when necessary. Both your leader and the professional wildlife expert that accompanies you on specific activities such as gorilla trekking, will be happy to answer any questions you might have and make sure everyone's obeying safety precautions.

Do I have to be fit to join a wildlife tour?

Our wildlife tours range from having a lower physical rating (2 out of 5 stars) to a higher physical rating (3 out of 5 stars) which indicates that you should have a reasonable level of fitness to be comfortable throughout your trip. Most wildlife trips visit at least one national park so you can expect to participate in a couple of walks or longer hikes.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas on my trek?

Animal movements can be unpredictable so we can't 100% guarantee that you'll see gorillas on your trek. Having said that, it's highly unlikely not to. You will be accompanied by a gorilla tracker on your trek and they'll have specific knowledge on how to find the gorillas and where they might be so you don't have to worry about a thing.

What’s the difference between trekking gorillas in Uganda and trekking in Rwanda?

There's not a huge difference between gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda when it comes to actually seeing the animals, but the terrain of both countries varies. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park has a more open and less dense landscape than the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda so it can often feel easier to trek through. Uganda also experiences more rain and this can make tracks slippery and harder to navigate. Another difference is that the permit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more expensive than in Uganda and this can deter budget-conscious travellers.

What vehicles do you use for Game Drives in Sub Saharan Africa?

The type of vehicles you'll travel on during your Game Drive is dependent on the style of your trip (basix, original, comfort, or premium) but all trips will use a 4x4 or alternate vehicle for at least one of those rides so you have the best opportunity to experience the wildlife from a unique perspective. If you want more details, check out the trip notes/itinerary information for your chosen trip.

When travelling on an Intrepid wildlife trip, how does my money support local conservation efforts?

Regardless of the style, every single one of our wildlife trips directly supports the conservation of wildlife or the people protecting the wildlife. A portion of any National Park or Game Reserve entrance fee (which is included in your trip price) is also fed back into protecting and conserving the park's natural and cultural heritage.  This money is crucial to safeguarding these habitats for wildlife to breed and survive together with its surrounding local communities. Our wildlife trips are also designed to seek out and support local projects, communities, and businesses that are actively working to protect wildlife, and educate and empower local communities to be custodians of conservation.

Will I get the opportunity for a range of different wildlife experiences on my trip?

Absolutely! Our trips feature a whole heap of fun activities such as Game drives, nature walks, and boat safaris, as well as unique experiences such as visiting a Wildlife Forensic Laboratory in Zimbabwe (which is exactly what it sounds like - a unit investigating wildlife crimes) and sitting down to dinner with a local park ranger where you'll learn about life in the wilderness and their special relationships with the mountain gorillas (guaranteed to be one dinner conversation you've never had before)!

Will I get the chance to learn from a local wildlife expert during my trip?

You'll have access to your trip leader who already has an impressive base of knowledge about the countries visited in the itinerary, and the local flora, fauna, cultural, religious, and social aspects associated with them but we also use additional local guides and wildlife experts who have a deeper and more specific knowledge about the places you go to and the animals you see. This is to add to your overall experience and make sure you're getting the full, well-rounded picture so expect to spend some time with wildlife veterinarians, park rangers, naturalist guides, and conservation researchers. For some trips, you will be accompanied by these experts for the entire duration, such as on our Antarctica departures where there's a naturalist and marine biologist onboard.

Which islands should I visit in the Galapagos to see the wildlife?

There's a good chance you'll see a wide variety of animals on any Galapagos Island since there are over 300+ different species that inhabit this archipelago. It's the sheer diversity and variety of life on land, in the air and under the water that makes the Galapagos such a drawcard for nature and wildlife lovers and each trip will give you the opportunity to experience as much of it as possible.

See below for some of the animals known to frequent the Galapagos Islands:

  • Sea lions are found across all islands.
  • Penguins are found across Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, Fernandina, Floreana, and Bartolome islands.
  • Giant tortoises are found across Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela, and Floreana islands.
  • Green sea turtles are found across all islands.
  • Land iguanas are found across Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina, Plaza Sur, and North Seymour islands.
  • Flamingoes are found across Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, Floreana, and Rabida islands.

Do I need travel insurance to join a wildlife tour?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to:  Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid's wildlife trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Testimonials

"We took the Crow Canyon tour and it was a wonderful experience, educational and deeply moving. We learned so much about the history of that magical place and the many people who have moved through it down the centuries. Kialo, Terri, and Gilbert were so warm and welcoming that we very quickly felt as if we were walking with old friends."
"TERRI & KIALO ARE INCREDIBLE GUIDES. We took a wonderful 5 hour walk in Bistah, and Kialo & Terri shared cultural and informative information about the area. Since we are retirees, and have limited abilities, Kialo and Terri were respectful to our abilities throughout the tour. We had plenty of rest and snacks on the tour. We have traveled to a lot of places across the U.S., and this is now our favorite spot!"
There can be no better way to view Chaco than through the eyes and mind of a Native American, and this experience was given to us by Kialo Winters, founder and owner of Navajo Tours USA. Because our vehicle was not appropriate for the road going into Chaco, Kialo met us and drove us into the canyon. During that portion of the trip, he talked about his family, his life, and growing up on the reservation. As we entered the site, we were awed by the grandeur, the vastness, and the serenity of Chaco. Kialo knows Chaco. He spoke of the history of the site, the development, the architecture, and the lifestyles of the people. He spoke of the geology and the expansion well beyond the impressive Pueblo Bonito. He was generous in answering all our questions and in taking good care of his guests. He provided an experience beyond our expectations and one to be long remembered. Highly recommend.

Join Us for a Guided Battle of the Wilderness Tour

Take a comprehensive tour of the Battle of the Wilderness Battlefield, May 5-6, 1864 .

The Battle of the Wilderness was the next major battle after Gettysburg and is known as the opening phase of Grant’s Overland Campaign. It was the first battle between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Some historians will say it was the beginning of the end of the Confederacy.

Your private battlefield tour will start at the Wilderness Battlefield Exhibit Shelter – National Park Service, where you will meet your battlefield guide. Receive a tour introduction and hear about General Grant coming east with a plan to end the war for President Lincoln.

Discover the fascinating history of the Battle of the Wilderness…

See the opening shots of the battle and the Overland Campaign, Saunder’s Field, on May 5, 1864. While there, view the original Civil War earthworks still standing today!

We’ll stop at the Brock Road / Plank Road intersection, where some of the most intense and desperate fights took place both days. Learn how Grant’s big plan for the second day on May 6 , 1864, was to land a hammering blow to Lee’s right wing with General Winfield Hancock’s combined forces.

Then, we’ll take you to Tapp Field, where the fate of the Confederacy hung in the balance. We’ll learn about the famous Lee to the rear! moment with the arrival of the famous Texas Brigade on the field.

In various portions of the tour, you will be surrounded by the forest of the Wilderness, where a new form of combat was waged in the woods. Confusion reigned supreme in the woods, where it was difficult to maneuver and navigate. A new hell on the battlefield was experienced when wildfires erupted.

Learn about Grant’s decision to withdraw from the Wilderness and head south on the road to Richmond, where there will be no turning back!

This private battlefield tour pairs nicely with the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House which is the next battle of the Overland Campaign; May 8-21, 1864.

If you have any questions, please get in touch .

Let a Local Battlefield Guide Show You the Way

Let us show you the way as you relax and skip the self-guided tour hassle. Your own battlefield guide will meet you in front of the Wilderness Battlefield Exhibit Shelter – National Park Service .

After an introduction, your battlefield guide will join your vehicle as you depart to your first stop. It is recommended that the battlefield guide drive your vehicle so you can relax and enjoy the tour, but it’s up to you who drives.

Joining your vehicle keeps the cost down so you can see more battlefields with us.

Step-on battlefield guides are available for larger passenger vehicles (van or bus). For more information and prices, please contact us .

Note: Battle of The Wilderness can be tailored into one of our Custom Battlefield Tours .
