Wu-Tang Clan and Nas Announce 2023 Australian Tour

By Music Feeds

Nas and the Wu-Tang Clan have announced a three-date tour of Australia in May this year. The two acts will land in Brisbane on Friday, 12th May, before moving through Sydney and Melbourne over the following two days.

The shows form part of their ongoing N.Y. State Of Mind tour; they played more than 25 shows across the US last year.

Wu-Tang Clan & Nas: A N.Y. State Of Mind

Wu-Tang Clan were last here in 2018 when they played four shows at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 25th-anniversary tour for 36 Chambers . Nas – whose Illmatic track ‘N.Y. State of Mind’ lends the tour its name – was last in the country as part of Ms. Lauryn Hill’s 2019 tour. Coincidentally, Hill will also be in Australia in 2023: she was just announced as the headliner for Gold Coast festival Promiseland.

Nas released his sixteenth album, King’s Disease III, in 2022. It followed 2021’s lauded King’s Disease II , which featured collaborations with Eminem , A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie , YG , Ms. Lauryn Hill, Hit-Boy, and more. Wu-Tang member GZA was originally scheduled to join The Soul Rebels at Bluestfest Byron Bay and shows in Brisbane and Sydney this April, but the tour was cancelled without explanation.

About Wu-Tang Clan

Founded in New York City’s Staten Island in the early 1990s, the Wu-Tang Clan is comprised of members RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, and the deceased Ol’ Dirty Bastard (ODB). Their name is a reference to a 1983 martial arts film.

Led by the production of RZA, samples from martial arts films have thematically appeared throughout the group’s music, as have samples of classic funk and soul tracks from artists like Rick James, James Brown, and Syl Johnson. As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have three platinum albums among their eight LPs, and the group’s complete anthology (including solo albums) has more than 85 full-length releases. More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

Wu-Tang Clan on Tour Considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time, Wu-Tang Clan have been touring as a unit since their debut record — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the New York City group with songs like “C.R.E.A.M.” (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) and “Protect Ya Neck” that are about as recognizable as anything in the rap canon.

Their live sets are a family affair, with every member of the crew representing their lyrical contributions to the Wu’s eight studio albums, as well as notable cuts from the Wu-Tang solo discography. With the omnipresent Wu-Tang “W” flanking all angles of the stage, there’s a familiarity to Wu-Tang Clan’s music that gives their shows unique mass appeal.

Whether they’re delivering the 36 Chambers record front to back on the album’s 25th Anniversary Tour, or tracks from GZA’s seminal Liquid Swords and Raekwon’s mafioso-minded Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, or honoring the legacy of their departed brother, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

About Nas Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track “Halftime” was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992’s  Zebrahead  movie soundtrack.  Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994,  Illmatic .  The RIAA platinum hip-hop landmark featured “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” “The World Is Yours,” and “One.”  1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum  It Was Written  (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks), with his first major crossover singles “Street Dreams” and “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).” Success continued with the double-platinum  I Am  in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B), with the chart singles “Nas Is Like,” “Hate Me Now” (featuring Puff Daddy), and “You Won’t See Me Tonight” (featuring Aaliyah).

Subsequent albums by Nas included: the RIAA platinum  Nastradamus  (1999, #2 R&B, #7 pop, with “Nastradamus” and “You Owe Me,” featuring Ginuwine); the platinum  Stillmatic  (2001, #1 R&B, #5 pop, with “Got Ur Self A…,” “ “One Mic,” and “Rule”); the platinum  God’s Son  (2002, #1 R&B, with huge R&B/pop crossover hits “Made You Look” and “I Can”); and the platinum double-CD  Street’s Disciple  (2004, #2 R&B, #5 pop, with “Bridging the Gap” and “Just a Moment”). And his 2012 album,  Life Is Good  earned him 4 Grammy nominations including Rap Album of the Year and is certified RIAA gold.

Over the years, Nas has also been the featured guest on a number of crossover hits by other artists, among them: Allure (“Head Over Heels,” 1997); Missy Elliott (the #1 “Hot Boyz,” 1999); fellow Queensbridge rapper Mobb Deep (“It’s Mine,” 1999); Jagged Edge (“I Got It 2,” 2002); J-Lo (“I’m Gonna Be Alright,” 2002); Kanye West (“Classic (Better Than I’ve Ever Been),” 2006); DJ Khaled (“Nas Album Done,” 2016); Swizz Beats (“Echo,” 2018); Jhene Aiko (“10K Hours,” 2020) and others.

In August 2020, Nas released  King’s Disease .  King’s Disease  marked Nas’ first new album in 2 years. The album was entirely produced by Hit-Boy, and Gabriel “G Code” Zardes serves as the albums co-executive producer. The album won “Best Rap Album” at the 2021 GRAMMYs, marking Nas’ first ever GRAMMY win.

In August of 2021, Nas released  King’s Disease II , a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album.  King’s Disease II  was executive produced by Nas and Hit-Boy and features collaborations with Eminem, EPMD, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, YG, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Hit-Boy & more. The album earned a nomination for “Best Rap Album” at the upcoming 64th GRAMMY Awards. Most recently, Nas released a surprise album titled Magic featuring A$AP Rocky and DJ Premier.

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama  Belly , a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series  The Get Down .

Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

Wu-Tang Clan and Nas announce Australian shows for this May

Ten members of Wu-Tang Clan gathered together in front of a pitch black background

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Wu-Tang Clan and Nas are two of New York's most vital musical entities.

In recent years, both acts have been semi-regular visitors to our country, and now they've announced that they'll be coming back real soon.

The two artists spent a good chunk of 2022 trekking around the United States on a massive double bill they've dubbed the NY State of Mind tour, and now that tour is coming to Australia.

For one big weekend in May, Wu-Tang Clan and Nas will take over big arenas along the east coast of the country, bringing some of the best hip hop of all time to their many Australian devotees.

Both artists released debut records rightly considered to be among the greatest records of the '90s.

Wu-Tang's 1993 record Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Nas' 1994 release Illmatic were hugely influential, game-changing LPs that sound every bit as good today as they did almost 30 years ago.

They've gone on to enjoy stellar careers since then. Wu-Tang's members have delivered scorching solo records – Raekwon 's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ..., Ghostface Killah 's Supreme Clientele , GZA 's Liquid Swords to name but a few – as well as some strong group records.

Nas has pumped out work with startling consistency, and many of his 16 (!) albums could rightfully be considered classics. His latest work, especially the King's Disease series of albums, proves he still has plenty to say and a hell of a way of saying it.

Recent visits have shown not just the enduring quality of the music, they have also proven that they can be incredible performers. Nas is pretty much always on song and, when the Wu-Tang Clan are in form, they're unstoppable .

This is a rare chance to see two iconic hip hop acts like this in the one hit. Don't miss out.

Catch this extraordinary line-up at the following shows. Tickets are on sale from 12pm Monday 6 March.

Friday 12 May – Brisbane Entertainment Centre

Saturday 13 May – Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney

Nas & Wu-Tang Clan Announce Australian Tour For May 2023

Chris Singh

Hip hop legends Nas and Wu-Tang Clan will be heading to Australia as part of their co-headlining NY State of Mind world tour in early June. And while both acts have been down under numerous times before, this will be the first time Australians will witness these two titans on the same night.

Announced this morning, the brief visit to this part of the world will form part of their ongoing world tour, which hit up more than 25 cities last year and is planning to run through a similar amount of stops in 2023. The Australian dates will be the first shows on part two of the tour, right before Nas and Wu-Tang Clan head on over to tour Europe and then wrap up with another stint in the US.

Fresh off completing his acclaimed King’s Disease trilogy, Nas should have more than enough new material to pack into his set, which will likely also include classics like ‘Live At The BBQ’ and the tour’s namesake track, ‘NY State of Mind.’ With Wu-Tang also in the building, it’s likely we’ll be seeing a bunch of collaborations, particularly between Nas and Raekwon who have traded bars on classics such as ‘Verbal Intercourse’ and Mobb Deep’s ‘Eye For An Eye.’

More Wu-Tang Clan

Wu-Tang Clan and Nas  have just announced their next dates in their global N.Y. State Of Mind Tour , adding shows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne this May.

The 2023 tour comes on the heels of the sold-out 2022 N.Y. State Of Mind Tour run that hit 25+ cities last year, including an iconic show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

General public tickets go on sale on Monday, 6 March, at noon local time. However, if you want to get your hands on tickets before then, the Live Nation pre-sale commences on Friday, 3 March, at 11 am local time and runs for 72 hours. Access tickets here .

Wu-Tang Clan have prevailed as hip hop's most legendary – and influential – group. In 2018, the New York posse marked the 25th anniversary of their fabled debut, Enter The Wu-Tang ( 36 Chambers ) , by performing it in full.

All nine current members – yes, RZA , GZA , Method Man , Raekwon , Ghostface Killah , Inspectah Deck , U-God , Masta Killa and Cappadonna  – brought da ruckus to the Sydney Opera House in 2018, its sails weirdly evoking the Wu's infamous 'W' insignia. They sold out four shows.

More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

In August 2020, Nas released King’s Disease II , a sequel to the GRAMMY Award-winning album. King’s Disease II was executive produced by Nas and Hit-Boy and features collaborations with Eminem , EPMD , A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie , YG , Ms Lauryn Hill , Hit-Boy & more. The album earned a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 64th GRAMMY Awards. Most recently, Nas released a surprise album titled Magic  featuring A$AP Rocky and DJ Premier .

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX ) in 1998’s cult classic crime drama Belly , a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several music videos). Most recently, he was the executive producer of the 2016 Netflix series The Get Down . Nas is also the co-founder of Mass Appeal Records.

Wu-Tang Clan and Nas Are Bringing Their Huge World Tour Down Under This Autumn

2023 ain't nuthing ta f' wit: it's the year that Wu-Tang Clan are returning Down Under, after all. After the hip hop legends kicked off their NY State of Mind tour with Nas in 2022, they're bringing the 2023 leg to Australia and New Zealand — and it's still a joint affair.

Two of the biggest names in the business since the 90s — with Wu-Tang Clan first making a splash with their 1993 debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) , and Nas doing the same with 1994's Illmatic — will play four shows in total on their Aussie and Aotearoa visit. They're the first gigs in the 2023 tour, too, and all in May, kicking off in Auckland before hopping across the ditch for stops in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

The 2022 leg hit up more than 25 cities, and 2023's is just as epic — after its stint Down Under, it heads through Europe and then back to the US. Along the way, fans can enjoy Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck and Cappadonna taking to the stage three decades after they first came to fame — and Nas sharing the mic as well.

Over that time, Wu-Tang Clan have dropped seven further albums from a fill discography that, including solo records by its members, notches up more than 85 full-length releases. Their tours pull from the whole lot, as set against that ever-present Wu-Tang 'W' — and honours the deceased Ol' Dirty Bastard as well.

Led by the production of RZA, samples from martial arts films have thematically appeared throughout the group's music, as have samples of classic funk and soul tracks from artists like Rick James, James Brown, and Syl Johnson. As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have three platinum albums among their eight LPs, and the group's complete anthology (including solo albums) has more than 85 full-length releases. More than just rappers, Wu-Tang Clan are entrepreneurs and successful cultural influencers, with an empire that features everything from clothing lines and video games to books and acting credits.

Considered by many to be the greatest hip-hop group of all time, Wu-Tang Clan have been touring as a unit since their debut record — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) — came out in 1993. The now triple-platinum release vaulted the New York City group with songs like "C.R.E.A.M." (Cash Rules Everything Around Me) and "Protect Ya Neck" that are about as recognizable as anything in the rap canon.

Their live sets are a family affair, with every member of the crew representing their lyrical contributions to the Wu's eight studio albums, as well as notable cuts from the Wu-Tang solo discography. With the omnipresent Wu-Tang "W" flanking all angles of the stage, there's a familiarity to Wu-Tang Clan's music that gives their shows unique mass appeal.

Whether they're delivering the 36 Chambers record front to back on the album's 25th Anniversary Tour, or tracks from GZA's seminal Liquid Swords and Raekwon's mafioso-minded Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., or honoring the legacy of their departed brother, Ol' Dirty Bastard, every Wu-Tang Clan show is a celebration of prolific careers as individuals and especially as the most storied group in hip-hop history.

In August 2020, Nas released King’s Disease II , a sequel to the GRAMMY Award winning album.

Wu-Tang Clan and Nas Announce 2023 Australian Tour

Wu-Tang member GZA was originally scheduled to join The Soul Rebels at Bluestfest Byron Bay and shows in Brisbane and Sydney this April, but the tour was cancelled without explanation.

wu tang clan australian tour 2023

Although they’ve been here many times before, both the Wu-Tang Clan and Nas have announced a co-headline tour of Australia, part of the wider NY State of Mind tour that has been tracking the globe since last year.

With songs like ‘Gravel Pit’ and ‘The World Is Yours’ between them, looking for these hip hop legends to put on the biggest rap show of the year as they stop by Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney before hopping on over to Europe and then back to the US to wrap up the tour, which so far has been a massive success.

The potential for on-stage collaborations with multiple rap icons in the building is something Australia has really never seen before. This places the NY State of Mind tour as essential for hip-hop fans and those who appreciate the pure, raw lyricism that saw these acts become major stars during hip hop’s formative years.

From Method Man to Inspectah Deck, reportedly the entire Wu-Tang Clan will be making the trip down under, right alongside Nas, who just finished wrapped up his King’s Disease trilogy the universal acclaim.

Friday, May 12 – Entertainment Centre, Brisbane Saturday, May 13 – Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Sunday, May 14 – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

Tickets to the Nas and Wu-Tang Clan Australian tour will go on sale from Monday, March 6 at 12 PM local time via Live Nation . A pre-sale for Live Nation members will kick off on Friday, March 3 at 11 AM local time.

Wu-Tang Clan

Legacy tours can often be hit and miss, but when Wu-Tang Clan and Nas decided to tour the world together, you always felt that it would be an unmissable occasion.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ was at their Auckland show to confirm: “Auckland’s Year of Bad Weather continued apace on Tuesday, cancelling events and causing chaos. But it couldn’t stop the impenetrable force that is Wu-Tang Clan and Nas together,” we wrote in May .

The show was a joyous affair, in no small part to the fact that this year marks the 50th anniversary of hip hop. When you consider that Wu-Tang Clan have been at the forefront of the genre for 30 of that 50 years, you realise that you’re dealing with a monumental group.

They released their seminal debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) , in 1993, forever changing East Coast hip hop, and as they celebrate the album’s landmark anniversary three decades later, they’re enjoying a career renaissance.

As well as continuing their global adventures with Nas, Wu-Tang have just become the latest international artist to partner with Menulog .

Wu-Tang and the delivery service have launched ‘Dolla Dolla Deals’, and fittingly for a group who have always been proud of their roots, Wu-Tang’s partnership is all about helping Australians living on a budget.

The new partnership is soundtracked by – what else – Wu-Tang’s anthem “C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)”, which famously features the line, “Dolla doll bills y’all.”

“C.R.E.A.M. was co-written by Wu-Tang’s Inspectah Deck, who was more than happy to work with Menulog to help Aussies find cheap deals and celebrate his group’s timeless song at the same time.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ caught up with Inspectah Deck this week, and we discussed what makes “C.R.E.A.M.” such a powerful song, a potential beef with former Menulog partner Snoop Dogg, the group’s recent Australia and New Zealand tour, and much more.

Rolling Stone AU/NZ: Did you think the OG “C.R.E.A.M.” was going to be such a hit when you first made it?

Inspectah Deck: No, I had no clue that “C.R.E.A.M.” was going to be what it wound up being. I just know when I heard the beat, it was just so melodic and it kind of transported me to another place. And so when I hear songs like that, I know those types of songs last forever.

That tune we sampled was made, I think, in the ’50s, and I remember hearing it and knowing it was going to be a hit, and that’s in the ’90s. So, I had that type of feeling about it, but I had no clue that it would make it to where it made it. We’re still finding new ways to celebrate it almost 30 years later, and Menulog are using it as the whole vibe of their new value offering.

What makes the song still relevant three decades later?

I think basically because cash still rules, man, everything around us, man. And it’s unfortunate that if you don’t have a certain amount of money, you don’t get to experience a lot of things in just regular life. You know what I mean? Don’t even need to have a lot of money. Just getting a little bit of money is hard nowadays.

I spoke of it as someone coming out of the hood who was just trying to make it the normal way and just facing those types of odds. And I think that resonates with people from this generation.

Have you had much time to reflect on the 30th anniversary of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) this year? Do you ever listen back to Wu-Tang’s debut album and think it sounds as fresh as ever?

Yeah, I go back and I listen to our album music as well as my own music. I listen to a lot of our stuff just on the random. A 30-year anniversary is just another day for me when it comes to Wu-Tang, because I’m always playing something out of the Wu-Tang category, I mean, just to keep my own sword sharp. I’m older now. I don’t rap like I used to, but I try to keep that wordplay and that hunger.

How did the partnership with Menulog come around?

It is inspired by the cash rules, inspired by the dollar dollar bill, man. It just made sense to team up with Menulog as they’re giving out the dollar dollar deals on the daily. It just made sense. And especially when they’re using “C.R.E.A.M.” as a theme song in the background to give a sound to  this type of movement, man.

It made sense and I’m honoured to be a part of it, to bring in the Australian fans who may not know Inspectah Deck and Wu-Tang. This is a chance for them to catch up and say, “Hey, we heard all the hype but we can check it out now. Oh, wow.” It keeps the relevancy alive in today’s market and today’s generation of people. Like, “Hey, what’s that song?”

And I think it’s dope no matter when you play it, man. 20 years from now, it’ll still be dope. Dolla dolla deals are helping people eat at a discount price and we’re all about that man, feeding the people, giving people struggling a chance. It’s dope.

Were you aware that Snoop Dogg previously partnered with Menulog for a song? Is this a continuation of the East Coast vs West Coast hip hop rivalry?!

I mean, nah, man, I wouldn’t want it to be a rivalry, a rivalry at all. Snoop Dogg is big, man. Snoop is somebody that I have a huge amount of love and respect for. So, maybe in the future, I can team up with Snoop Dogg in another Menulog campaign. Maybe we can bring the dolla-dolla doggy-style deal, you know? You never know. Right now I’m just excited to be a part of the launch of ‘Dolla Dolla Deals’.

wu tang clan australian tour 2023

How did you find Wu-Tang’s recent Australian and New Zealand tour? I saw you play in Auckland and it was an incredible show.

Yeah, man. Outside of the journey to get there, I love coming to Australia and New Zealand. I love the Gold Coast, man, or going out in New Zealand because those are beautiful places and have some beautiful people there that always show us love throughout the years of us going. I wish I could stay longer when we take those types of trips, those types of shows, because you meet so many people that’s like, “Yo man, you’re staying here for two more days? I could show you this,” or, “I could show you that.”

But a lot of times we live the tour life. We don’t get a chance to see the real city life. I still haven’t really seen the real Australia. I want somebody to take me on a trail or something, see a kangaroo in person and those types of things. I still want to do that one day.

Was there a particular highlight from the tour? A city that really showed the group some love?

Just recently we were in Bogotá, Colombia and Buenos Aires, Argentina, they were ridiculous. They made me feel like I was 25 again. The energy that was going on in that arena, they were jumping, they were going nuts. I think we posted some of it on our pages on  Instagram and got a lot of good comments like, “I was in the building. That energy was electric.” Yeah, Buenos Aires.

And we even went through Copenhagen, Denmark. It was crazy, packed house, people leaping off the floor. And then the thing that I love to see is that it’s all different generations – it’s young kids, it’s middle ages, it’s old-timers like myself and they’re all in one building, just going crazy together.

How do Australian/New Zealand crowds compare to US crowds? Is there a big difference?

There’s a big difference, man. I guess in Australia, I think, and other places, life is just different. People across the world don’t get into celebrity life as much and definitely don’t worry about celebrity as much as America does. So, when we go to other places, it’s a genuine love that I think that when they see us, it’s not like they see American celebrities every day out there.

I don’t think in Australian society, everyone is like, “I’m a star, I’m a star, I’m a star.” I’ve met a lot of down to earth people that have money and all of that, but they’re not just out there like that. Different vibe.

Did you order on Menulog while over here? Takeaway must hit the spot during a busy touring schedule!

Yeah for sure, we ordered food multiple times on Menulog, me and my brother U-God. Y’all make unbelievable Poke bowls here, when we’re on tour we always use Menulog to get them while we’re on the go.

And what’s coming up for you and Wu-Tang in the rest of 2023?

Oh, man, we’ve still got the rest of the New York State of Mind tour with Nas and Busta Rhymes.  And as far as myself, I’m just sitting back, I just took a move, I moved the family across the state. So, I’m settling in, trying to be a dad/CEO, put more time in with the kids and stuff like that while I have a chance because 2024 would be more the same. We have movie deals, all types of things on the table now. Wu-Tang has this second wind. We’re just running with it.
