Hayley Mary explains, “I’m so excited to perform one of rock’s most influential albums, by one of the world’s most revered bands, with some of Australia’s finest musicians! ‘Tommy’ is like ‘A Clockwork Orange’ meets ‘Almost Famous’ in album form; a dark eccentric and cutting critique of fatherlessness and fame and that rings truer now than ever. You Am I Discuss Their Love For The Who’s ‘Tommy’

“The idea and execution had swathes of power and beauty that swept the pap away,” says frontman Tim Rogers.

You Am I

You Am I (Source: Supplied)

Later this month, Aussie rock legends You Am I will hit the road for a sprawling national theatre tour – however they won’t be playing songs from their own acclaimed catalogue of 11 albums. Instead, they’ll paying tribute to one of the greatest rock albums of yesteryear, The Who ’s 1969 epic Tommy .

The 12-date run was announced back in April. At the time, frontman Tim Rogers – who will be joined by special guest vocalists Hayley Mary (of The Jezabels fame) and Sarah McLeod (of The Superjesus ) – said in a statement: “A preposterous proposition of pomp power n pithiness to be performed by our pop group with pals. We promise to plunder deep and perform in full plumage with no panache, just passions. Prost!”

Mary added to the sentiment, “I’m so excited to perform one of rock’s most influential albums, by one of the world’s most revered bands, with some of Australia’s finest musicians!  Tommy is like A Clockwork Orange meets Almost Famous in album form; a dark, eccentric and cutting critique of fatherlessness and fame, and that rings truer now than ever. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the disturbing themes and help bring some of these colourful characters to life across the country.”

And for good measure, McLeod also vouched her excitement for the trek, saying: “I have always loved You Am I; they are a killer band with such swagger, I’ve always wanted to play with them. We’ve talked about all sorts of collaborations for years, but playing Tommy  in its entirety takes the cake; this is going to be so epic!”

The star-studded Tommy tour will start in Caloundra on Wednesday July 26, with dates in Tweed Heads and Brisbane rounding out the month. You Am I (and co) will then kick August off in Newcastle, then head to Thirroul, Sydney, Frankston, Albury, Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Perth. Tickets for all of the shows are on sale now – find them here .

Before the tour begins, TheMusic caught up directly with Rogers – as well as lead guitarist Davey Lane and bassist Andy Kent – to find out more about just why it is that Tommy means so much to You Am I. Hit play on the record below, then read on for their explanations.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

I owned only two Who (twowho?) cassettes until I could get more when I was perhaps 23 – a Greatest Hits and a copy of Tommy bought at a Queensland flea market that was warped significantly. The warping eased most tellingly during the Overture at a point of chilling portent – the “listening to you” instrumental where the chords move as if your blood has thickened tenfold and your heart could burst from emotion. Well, this pimply daydreamer anyways.

Though I thought there was some less than inspiring songs on the LPs, the idea and execution had swathes of power and beauty that swept the pap away. Years later at my first Red Kross gig, they played the whole overture to a mostly oblivious audience and was similarly, cardiacally engorged. The idea had not been even discussed at 3am over a hotel carpet until I was asked by the Sydney Theatre Company to take a meeting about a musical theatre piece 13 years ago.

The directors at the time were Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett . I liked them, and was very flattered, so hastily got my notes for a proposed musical based on Jean Cocteau ’s Les Enfants Terribles novella. At the meeting, I sweatily delivered my treatise on Les Enfants and the vision for the musical. 32 minutes of bluster later they paused, said their thanks and proposed: “Great. But what about Tommy? Delivered with power and panache and no ‘Broadway’ tropes?”.

I was a little crestfallen, but the seed was planted. True story. Go To The Mirror is my favourite tune from the LPs. Riffs as big as me and Pete’s nostrils and twists and turns as lustrous as Roger’s curls. Long Live the ‘Orrible ‘Oo.

Tommy always scared the bejesus out of me – I was already a Who fan, and already being aware of Pinball Wizard and that this was a rock opera – an album with a narrative thread of sorts – I was thought I knew what I was getting myself in for. Nuh uh. Whilst it contains many of the hallmarks that make the Who one of my top four bands of all time, its spooky interludes and dark themes still beguile me as much as they did 30 years ago.

My favourite song is Sensation . This song is one of Tommy's brief moments of joy and optimism, the closest this record gets to the "flower power" fare that ran concurrent to its release. A gorgeous melody, and especially poignant one for us to play on the upcoming tour as Pete Townshend wrote it whilst on tour in Australia in 1968.

There was an older dude across the road from me growing up who would blast all the “good stuff” over the suburban cul-de-sac where I lived. Loud and proud. This enticing, meandering yet concise “story” that spilled out over the backyards and pavements over four sides drew me in like a cockroach. He played Tommy on a loop when I was small and every time Pinball Wizard came on, I involuntarily starting scuttling in its direction.

At eight years old I had no idea what it was, but I knew I had to find out how, why and what it was. About as concise and “stand up” as any rock song ever made, Pinball Wizard sounds better to me know because I know the how, why and what... And now I get play it with my brothers and sisters! Great scuttling music.

A rock opera largely composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, The Who’s Tommy is one of the most acclaimed rock albums of all time. “ Tommy is like A Clockwork Orange meets Almost Famous in album form,” Hayley Mary shared in a statement. “A dark eccentric and cutting critique of fatherlessness and fame and that rings truer now than ever. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the disturbing themes and help bring some of these colourful characters to life across the country.”

You Am I, Mary, and McLeod will perform the album in full, as well as some other select tracks from across The Who’s catalogue. Tim Rogers is also gearing up to tour with The Hard-Ons for their upcoming album, Ripper ’23.

You Am I

The much loved ARIA award-winning Australian quartet You Am I are paying homage to one of their musical heroes in performing The Who’s legendary album, Tommy across the country this July and August. They will also be playing a selection of Who classics. With special guest vocalists Hayley Mary and Sarah McLeod , it is going to be a very special night out.

They will be taking the show all over Australia, kicking off at The Events Centre in Caloundra on the 26th of July, and concluding at the Astor Theatre in Perth on the 18th of August. And before you check your diaries, it’s on after Splendour , so no horrendous clash there.

Tommy was the fourth album from The Who, released in 1969, and was famous for being a double album that was a rock opera. It was largely composed by the band’s guitarist Pete Townshend. It tells the story of Tommy Walker.

About the shows Tim Rogers writes: “A preposterous proposition of pomp power n pithiness to be performed by our pop group with pals. We promise to plunder deep and perform in full plumage with no panache, just passions. Prost!”.

Hayley Mary is equally excited about the prospect, writing: “I’m so excited to perform one of rock’s most influential albums, by one of the world’s most revered bands, with some of Australia’s finest musicians! ‘Tommy’ is like ‘A Clockwork Orange’ meets ‘Almost Famous’ in album form; a dark eccentric and cutting critique of fatherlessness and fame and that rings truer now than ever. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the disturbing themes and help bring some of these colourful characters to life across the country.”

Sarah McLeod is also full of beans about the project, saying “ I have always loved You Am I, they are a killer band with such swagger, I’ve always wanted to play with them . We’ve talked about all sorts of collaborations for years but playing Tommy in its entirety takes the cake, this is going to be so epic!”

You Am I Announce National Tour Performing The Who’s ‘Tommy’ with Guests Hayley Mary & Sarah McLeod

By Jules LeFevre

You Am I will circle the country playing The Who’s iconic rock opera record Tommy later this year. The tour will get under way in Caloundra in Queensland on Wednesday, 26 July, before moving through regional centres and capital cities, finishing up at the Astor Theatre in Perth on Friday, 18th August.

Tim Rogers and co. won’t be going it alone either: they’ll be joined on tour by The Jezabels’ frontwoman and now solo artist Hayley Mary , and songwriter-guitarist Sarah McLeod . Check out all the dates and details below.

The Who: ‘Pinball Wizard’

A rock opera largely composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, The Who’s Tommy is one of the most acclaimed rock albums of all time. Released in 1969, it follows the story of Tommy Walker, who endures a life of struggle and abuse that begins with him seeing the murder of his father. In the early ’90s the album was adapted into a Broadway musical by Townshend.

“ A preposterous proposition of pomp power n pithiness to be performed by our pop group with pals,” Tim Rogers said of the upcoming tour. “We promise to plunder deep and perform in full plumage with no panache, just passions. Prost!”

Those pals are mighty talented ones too, with former Jezabels frontwoman and excellent solo artist Hayley Mary , and fellow solo artist and frontwoman of The Superjesus Sarah McLeod both jumping in the bus and joining You Am I on vocals at each show.

" Tommy is like A Clockwork Orange meets Almost Famous in album form; a dark eccentric and cutting critique of fatherlessness and fame and that rings truer now than ever," Mary said.

"I can't wait to sink my teeth into the disturbing themes and help bring some of these colourful characters to life across the country."

"I have always loved You Am I, they are a killer band with such swagger, I’ve always wanted to play with them," McLeod said.

You Am I to perform The Who’s Tommy on national tour

by Newcastle Live 18 April 2023, 9:55 am

Australian rock band You Am I will hit the road later this year for a tour that will see them homage to English rockers, The Who .

They’ll be performing the legendary album Tommy , as well as a set of Who classics on a national tour that will see them play Newcastle in August .

Tommy, the fourth studio long-player by The Who, was a double concept album that told the story of Tommy Walker a boy who dissociates from his childhood traumas by playing pinball.

Released in May 1969, the album features songs mostly written by the band’s guitarist, Pete Townshend .

You Am I frontman, Tim Rogers has often referred to the music of The Who and specifically the work of Pete Townshend as a massive influence on his own playing and the music he writes.

“We promise to plunder deep and perform in full plumage with no panache, just passions. Prost,” Rogers said of the upcoming tour.

The band will be joined on the tour by two of Australia’s most accomplished female rock voices, Hayley Mary and Sarah McLeod , who will share vocals with Tim Rogers.

“I have always loved You Am I, they are a killer band with such swagger, I’ve always wanted to play with them,” Sarah McLeod said.

“We’ve talked about all sorts of collaborations for years but playing Tommy in its entirety takes the cake, this is going to be so epic!”

The You Am I Performing The Who’s Tommy show will hit the stage at the Civic Theatre Newcastle on 2 August. The Live Nation Pre-sale commences Wednesday, April 19 at 10 am, running for 24 hours. You Am I plays Tommy

you am i tommy tour

29 July 2023 – Fortitude Music Hall, Brisbane – words and pictures by Justin Gittins

It was the day before the gig and some tracks from an old Hottest 100 album start playing on my car stereo.

“There is a scratch only you could itch….” Sings Tim Rogers.  Is my car stereo taunting me with You Am I’s ‘Purple Sneakers’?  To be perfectly honest, that is what I want You Am I to be playing, as well as classics such as ‘Heavy Heart’, ‘Rumble’ and ‘Cathy’s Clown’.

I still hadn’t got my head around the concept of the show.  It was based on an album from 1969.  What was that all about?  (Spoiler Alert! – Tim lets us know at the end of the night)

The Who’s album Tommy was released in May 1969.  At this stage Tim Rogers was just a small bump in his mother’s tummy.  (He would be born four months later) It was a double album and told the story of Tommy Walker and has been described as a rock opera.

The last time I had seen You Am I was at some random music festival in a year that didn’t start with a “2”.  The vibe tonight was totally different as I looked down from the mezzanine to the assigned seating on the main floor area.  It certainly was a very formal affair with ushers and regular announcements about the pending start of the show.  As the room slowly filled with what appeared to be a sea of grey hair it became apparent that the lack of ‘Purple Sneakers’ would not be an issue.  Having said that, You Am I needed to nail their version of Tommy to keep these punters happy.

you am i tommy tour

You Am I – Tommy – Fortitude Music Hall – photos by Justin Gittins

Tim Rogers was out the front for You Am I.  David Lane was on lead guitar.  Andy Kent on bass guitar.  Russell Hopkinson was on drums.

Helping them out on vocals were two awesome female artists.  Sarah McLeod from Superjesus and singer-songwriter Hayley Mary from The Jezabels.

‘Overture’ kicked off and the crowd settled for the story of young Tommy.  Tim Rogers took on the vocals as the stage was lit by a variety of colours giving that psychedelic rock concert effect.  As the album progressed, we were treated to Sarah McLeod on vocals as she brought her amazing energy to the stage.

you am i tommy tour

We were told of an ‘Amazing Journey’ and ‘Christmas’ and ‘The Acid Queen’ with Hayley Mary joining in on the vocals.  The crowd was treated to different outfits adorned in sequins, feathers and leather.

You Am I showed their musical prowess as they finished up the first half of the evening with a ten-minute instrumental rendition of ‘Underture’.

After a short intermission there was not long to ‘Fiddle About’ before the highly familiar lyrics told us of Tommy’s secret skills.

“Ever since I was a young boy, I’ve played the silver ball….” announced the start of ‘Pinball Wizard’. The crowd were treated to Sarah McLeod joining the band on stage for an awesome rendition of this classic song.

I watched the rest of the album from the mezzanine. Chairs had been provided but the performance had many of the patrons out of their seats. They were singing and dancing as one familiar song after another was played. Each time either Sarah or Hayley grabbed the mike, the crowd was energised. The addition of the two female vocalists took the show to a whole other level.

After an awesome hour and a half of music, ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ wrapped up the story of Tommy.

So why pick Tommy for a show?

Tim Rogers tells the audience “Why the F@#k wouldn’t you….we wanted to share some joy with you.”

Sarah McLeod also lets us know “It’s a f@#cking weird album but a cool show.”

As an encore, the crowd were treated to a few more classics from The Who.

Davy Lane jumps on the microphone for ‘I Can’t Explain’.  Sarah gets the crowd revved up with her awesome vocals joining Tim for ‘Substitute’ and ‘My Generation’.

The psychedelic ‘Baba O’Riley’ wraps up the show.  Hayley Mary tells us all about “teenage wasteland” and You Am I bring concert to an end with an awesome instrumental section that showcases their talent.

I turn to the bloke standing next to me.  He is proudly wearing a shirt from his favourite band The Who and has been dancing and singing along.  A tear has formed in his eye, and he is yelling “Thank you! Thank you!”  For me this is the answer to the question of why You Am I chose Tommy .

It was an awesome show and an amazing tribute to a band that has been such a huge influence on those who followed.

No days off for Tommy Fleetwood.

After playing the last three weeks in the United States on the PGA Tour, including a T-3 finish at the 2024 Masters, Fleetwood is in United Arab Emirates this week at a Challenge Tour event. Not as a player, but as a caddie for his 17-year-old stepson Oscar Craig.

And it seems Fleetwood knows a thing or two about being a good looper. He has helped Craig, playing this week as an amateur at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, to a 3-under 69 start, good enough for T-14.

Not bad for a 17-year-old, and not bad for Fleetwood after his busy three-week stretch.

Craig earned his spot in the tournament by winning the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open in February. The family has a home in Dubai, so it’s not a far trip from home for them to tackle the links together this week.

Here’s a look at Fleetwood’s looping skills through photos:

Inspector Steve Parker-Phipps, responsible for policing certain aspects of the protest, imposed a Section 35 order under the Crime and Policing Act 2014 when he thought a “right-wing group” could potentially be attending, the trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.

Inspector Parker-Phipps, whose laptop battery was “dying”, put the order in place at 10am on November 26, but accidentally dated the form for November 24.

Mr Robinson’s defence lawyer Alisdair Williamson KC told the court there had been a “litany of catastrophic errors” in the Met’s handling of the incident.

Questioning the inspector, Mr Williamson said: “This document is not correct is it?

“Can we have any confidence that there was a lawful order in place?”

The officer replied: “No.”

Giving his ruling, District Judge Daniel Sternberg said: “I am not satisfied there was a legal authorisation.

“There is no case for you to answer.”

The trial was attended by numerous supporters of Mr Robinson who filled the public gallery.

During his arrest, officers sprayed Mr Robinson with synthetic pepper spray and handcuffed him.

He uploaded a video of himself with partially closed eyes to social media after the incident.

Other footage of him arguing with police officers was also posted on his X account, with Mr Robinson claiming to be present as a journalist at the march.
