Horn and cruise control wont work

  • Add to quote

So i'm getting no power to my steering wheel. no horn, cruise control, and i have my air bag light on which i figure is b/c its not reading my steering wheel one. oh yeah its an 02' wrx. i checked all the fuses under the hood and along the drivers side. so is there a relay or something i'm missing. i already checked the connection at the steering wheel and its seems good unless there's on i can't see.

so i decided to go a little deeper into troubleshooting, and i pulled the airbag and steeringwheel off. i'm thinking it might be the switch which connects everything on the steering wheel to the column. i just need to get a hold of a multimeter to see if i have a good connection there. if not than i know what it is.

I had the same problem. The fuse kept blowing on my horn/cruise control, it turned out to be a short in one of the steering wheel circuits. Fixed it at the dealer.

Has anyone found a fix to this problem? My Horn, and cruise control doesn't work and the Airbag light is now on....LIVID! Did anyone find out if the switch in the steering wheel is to blame or what? Thanks

All the fuses are fine unfortunately, I just have to assume the clock spring is faulty!

its the roll connecter or "clock spring". you will need to disconnect the battery, pull the air bag out of the wheel. mark the steering wheel cog and the steering column spline with permanent marker. Keeping the front wheels straight, take off the steering wheel and you will see the roll connecter, its a circle with an arrow on the bottom and a yellow sticker. replace that, line everything back up and you will be good to go. I replaced the steering rack in my 02 and spun the wheel like an idiot, POP goes the very expensive part! hope that helps. Please do not force the roll connecter on or off and make sure the arrow on the roll connecter matches the one on the column.

Also make sure you wait at least 10 min. after you disconnect the battery, there are capacitors in the airbag control module that need to discharge in that time...

fuses

If your convenience lights, turn signals, seat warmers, stereo, headlights or other electronic components suddenly stop working, chances are you have a fuse that has blown out. The video above shows how to check and change blown fuses in the engine bay of your 2002 Subaru Impreza in addition to where the fuse box diagram is located. Fuses should always be the first thing you check if your Impreza is experiencing electrical difficulties because they are relatively easy and inexpensive to change yourself. The more electronics your Impreza has, the more fuses it has. Some Subarus have multiple fuse boxes in the engine bay, so be sure to find the fuse(s) in question. Some components may have multiple fuses, so make sure you check all of the fuses that are linked to the component that is no longer working properly. If you need to replace a blown fuse in your Impreza, make sure you replace it with one that has the same amperage as the blown fuse. If checking and replacing the fuse for the component in question doesn't work, we recommend seeking assistance from a trusted professional mechanic. They should be able to figure out if the component needs to be replaced or if there is a short or some other problem with your Impreza.

2002 - Cruise control button/lights?

  • Add to quote

First, does the cruise control button have a "click" type of engagement when you press the button? Mine just sort of pushes in and releases, unlike, say, the fog light button, and nothing seems to happen. Second, when you push the button to turn it on, does a light on the dash illuminate? I know the red light on the button should light up (I think), but mine currently doesn't, and I haven't checked that bulb yet. I pulled the switch and took it apart, but didn't check the red bulb to see if the filament was broken, as I ran out of Radio Shack replacement bulbs. I've tried to use the cruise control, just to see if it works, and so far, I'm having no luck.

Any input on this?

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

I can't confirm on FS MY02 but I have an Impreza RS MY08 and an FXT MY 11 and on both of them the cruise control buttons push and release (no click) and a green light on the dash with "cruise" lights up. Hope this is of help to you

I looked at the owner's manual but it didn't show a "cruise" light for the gauge cluster. I used to have a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS, and I think it had one, but I couldn't say for sure. My Frankenstein '95 Impreza doesn't have cruise control, so I can't check it to compare. I will have to get some new bulbs for the illuminated part and the red "on" part of the switch, and go from there. I checked the fuse, and it was fine. Thanks for the input on the push and release (no click) part.

Definitely a momentary switch (no click). The top portion of the switch should illuminate in Amber. You can use a bulb from fog light switch, or use the switch illumination bulb for the indicator light as a test. The switch must be ON for the system to engage. Activation is the switch/stalk on the steering wheel. There is also a switch on the brake pedal, and one on the PRNDL to assure the system does not activate in other than drive, or when you hit the brakes.

Thanks. Stopped at Radio Shack today and got some replacement bulbs, then went home and pulled the switch. Both bulbs were shot, so I replaced both. The switch now illuminates, and the red indicator light comes on. I will have to check and see if the system actually works on the way to work in the morning.

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Did you get your cruise control to work yet? I just finished getting my switch lighting to work like it's supposed to and it sure makes life a lot easier.

Yeah, I did, the day after I posted that, actually; I just forgot to update this thread. I also realized that I wasn't using the lever properly, so it actually may have worked before, but now the lights work like they're supposed to.

My Forester is the first time for me to ever use cruise and I'm really liking it - both for watching my speed at times, and allowing me to move my legs around on long trips.

I typically don't use it (on any car), but wanted to have it working in case I want to use it.

My light doesn't work either, though the cruise control does. Could you tell me how to pull the switch and change the bulb? Thanks

Take out the plastic screw and the thing it goes into on the side of the lower dash panel, then remove the two metal screws at the bottom of the panel. One is right by the hood release, and the other is by the center console. After that, pull the panel loose, and you'll have access to the switches from behind. Unplug the switch, and work it out of the cutout with a sort of up and down motion while pushing it outward from the panel.

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Resolve yet? I just had a recent encounter similar to yours. I could press the "cruise" button and the light in the gauge displays but it would not engage when I set it. Found out it was a bad brake switch. After the fix (by the dealer - free as it was checked off as working prior to selling it to me), when I set the cruise, it shows SET under the CRUISE gauge display. Off course mine is a 2008 but it won't hurt to see if that's the case as well. Hope this helps somewhat.

Cruise Control

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

  • Add to quote

So I have never had the cruise control working in my car since I bought it. The guy I bought it from put on TuboXS exhaust. He told me it went out when he put the exhaust on it. Could that be it? And how can I get it working again?

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

do you have a cel on if it is the cruise wont work.

So the cruise wont work at all if I have a CEL?

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Usually when a CEL comes up the CEL light and the cruise control will come on. Which in turn will disable your cruise control.

Thats crap. I guess I wont be having cruise control for a while.

Well the best bet is to find out what that CEL is for. It could be something harmful to your engine. Autozone and a few other places can/will read the code for free.

Find a buddy with a tactrix cable and have them disable the CEL. Can you use an AP to clear CEL's on a car it's not married to? If you can, you can do that too. Edit: But like New said, make sure it's a CEL related to the exhaust, it'll come up as a catalyst low input or something like that (I'm assuming full TBE), and then clear it. The only thing that worries me is the fact that it has a CEL from the exhaust, which would only happen if he replaced the downpipe. Any tuner would disable that CEL, so it may not be tuned for the DP? Not a HUGE issue for the 02, but you should still look at getting tuned if it isn't.

Chris is pretty much right about that. But another thing is (from experience) is that my 2005 WRX with a 4EAT is running a full catless TBE with a CEL but the cruise still works. I know that the CLE is from being catless and w/out a tune. But at the same time its the wifes car, its an automatic, and its not driven near as hard as my car (and we are maybe thinking about upgrading hers to a Legacy or something bigger).

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Back to the OP..... Check the switch on the clutch pedal. That's often the cause of not having cruise control. Cruise should still work with a CEL. If it is combined with a flashing cruise light, that indicates the engine is in limp mode. Yes you can read and clear codes with an AP, on any OBDII subaru.

What am I checking on the switch on the clutch pedal? And I had CELs but I changed to a cobb intake and put a spacer on my O2 sensor so Im going to see if that will do for my CELs

Make sure it's plugged in and that the button moves in and out freely. It's been a while since I've been under there, so I forget which switch is which. One's a safety switch for starting the car, the other kicks it out of cruise control when you shift.

Ohh... So if that switch is bad, the whole cruise control is shot?

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Well, if the car's CC module thinks the clutch is in, it won't engage. Also, I wonder if he accidentally unplugged or shorted something replacing the exhaust? There's a CC solenoid at the throttle body, but I don't know if any of those wires go anywhere close to the exhaust system.

Ok. Well while my CEL was off, my cruise didnt work...and now that my CEL is on again, still wont work. So im going to guess its the switch...? And I looked under there today, and theres two on the clutch pedal, which on is it...And how would someone go about diagnosing it?

I had to replace a clutch master cylinder today, so I was under there and I'm pretty sure it's the blue (nearest) one. Make sure it's plugged in, that the button moves freely, that the plug that pushes it in, is in place. If you have to replace it, I can't imagine it costs more that $10 from Subaru. It's just two wires, so you can unplug it and jumper the plug (from harness) and see if cruise works. I jumper the other one so I can use the starter without the clutch, which is handy should you ever have engine problems and need to move the car with the starter (or have no clutch !) Now if it's not that switch, you should make sure everything is plugged in properly on the cruise control unit under the hood, check the fuse, the throttle cable etc. I have seen a few cars come through the shop that the clutch switch was the problem (stuck button)

Well I check the switches on the clutch pedal and they all seem to be moving freely. How would you jumper the switch to see if it would work?

Fuse Location for Cruise Control

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

  • Add to quote

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

I doubt it's a fuse if you can turn cruise control on and off but the set button doesn't work. I hate going to the dealership myself but when you're in warranty it's a good idea to do it anyways. Even if it were a fuse, it shouldn't be blowing, and by taking it to the dealership when the problem first occurs you're establishing the record of the problem so that if it happens again there's a trail of documentation.

That's likely the best option, and it saves me from causing other problems. Thanks for your recommendation!

2002 wrx cruise control fuse

Unfortunately, the days of swapping out a fuse to solve a problem are largely long gone, but it's still the first instinct of a lot of folks. However, the old pull the plug (negative cable) to reset everything does sometimes (dare I say fairly often?) solve a variety of unexplained system malfunctions.

Good thoughts! I can't recall replacing an automobile fuse in many years, yet a pull-the-plug for a quick reset could help. This was done in February of this year when a dealer replaced the battery on our Outback under warranty when it failed. The cruise control did work correctly before and after the battery change.

I think those buttons can be checked in the dealership mode…. I think. press and hold the temperature control buttons on the radio - either side, left is probably easier to reach - hold both the up and down temp control buttons, while holding, press the volume knob 6 times (not too slow - maybe 2 per second?). in dealership mode, under Function Check, and then under Panel and Steering Switch - that screen will show the result of pressing buttons on the radio and the steering wheel. I‘m not sure if the cruise buttons will respond - you can check them - if any of hte buttons on that side of the steering wheel respond, they all should.

Wow, it's impressive to know that these diagnostics are available! Thanks for sharing!
