Thirty seconds to mars fan-report: valutazioni e recensioni, 37 recensioni (ø 4,97), concerto fantastico.

Concerto fantastico, molto coinvolgente.

I Thirty Seconds To Mars , conosciuti anche come 30 Seconds To Mars , nascono in California, a Los Angeles, nel 1998, dai fratelli Jared Leto (voce principale, chitarra, basso, tastiere) e Shannon Leto (batteria, percussioni).

Attore, cantautore, musicista, regista.

It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day: il sesto album in studio dei Thirty Seconds To Mars

Thirty Seconds to Mars is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, US. The band is just a three piece consisting of the Leto brothers and Tomo Milicevic, but their sound is epic for such a small band.

Although Thirty Seconds to Mars is generally described as an alternative rock band, their music is inspired by all styles of music and contains elements of experimental music as well as themes that are often philosophical. Their large atmospheric sound that the band creates often garners comparison to musical acts such as The Cure, Pink Floyd and U2.

Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto decided on the name Thirty Seconds to Mars because they wanted the name of the band to describe the sound of their music, which they labeled as urgent and cinematic. The brothers formed the band in 1998 and began performing material in small clubs that Jared Leto had written. After playing small gigs and writing a bunch of material, the band finally released their self-titled debut album in 2002 under Virgin Records.

The band’s debut was a concept album that focused on the theme of self-determination and followed the style of progressive metal and space rock. The album featured the consistent use of electronics and had an overall aggressive tone, which sounded somewhere between Tool and Rush.

Thirty Seconds to Mars really broke into the mainstream with the release of their 2005 album “A Beautiful Lie”. On this album Jared Leto took a more sincere and emotional approach to songwriting making the album a more personal one. The album clearly conveys Jared Leto exerting his voice in a raw manner, which gives the album a more personal touch. The album has gone on to reach gold and platinum status in several countries and contains a myriad of hit songs. Some of the most famous songs on the album include “Attack”, “A Beautiful Lie”, “The Kill”, and “From Yesterday”.

Thirty Seconds to Mars always makes sure they are approaching things in the most creative way when they are making music. Their third album “This Is War” features 2,000 different album covers that consist of the best shots that fans took of themselves. The band has always taken priority in their fans and at some of their shows they have even let fans provide backing vocals and percussion to their music.

Thirty Seconds to Mars have also established themselves as one of the hardest working artists in the business when it comes to touring. In 2011 the band was inducted into the Guinness World Records for performing the most live shows for a single album cycle.

When Jared Leto is not working hard at writing music and performing it across the world, he is usually acting in films. His film work has proven to be just as successful as his music, having already won an Oscar for his work in “Dallas Buyers Club”.

Thirty Seconds to Mars is consistently selling out shows wherever they tour and have had great success in their album sales having already sold over 15 million albums. Jared Leto is a natural born performer that has mastered showmanship both on the screen and on the stage when he is performing high energy shows with his intense band.

Live reviews

Seeing Thirty Seconds To Mars for the first time yesterday was a blast! Thanks to people I knew, I was able to get the full experience! The check in time was ideal because of the length of the meet and greet as well as soundcheck over running slightly. (Which was amazing) The meet and greet felt not too rushed but quick. Only because the time flew by. I’d say we had roughly an hour and a bit with them at the meet and greet. The Q&A was longer than most other concerts and they (Jared and Shannon) also treated us with Pizza!! The photo with the band was very quick but worth it. The hug I got from Shannon was amazing and Jared made a really nice remark to me by saying “Awwww how sweet!” After everyone’s photos were taken, I asked Reni (the head co-ordinator) if I could take a photo with Jamie (one of the people who works with MARS) and she alloud me to go over. Everyone is so nice. The meet and greet was over and the people who had soundcheck was told to go back to the seats where we sat for the M&G. After 5-10 mins they called us over. Managed to get a few cheeky photos and videos during soundcheck and luckily didn’t get caught as they weren’t aloud. I waved at Stevie and he gave me a lovely smile and thumbs up. Soundcheck over ran which was pretty good. Once soundcheck finished, we were given an hour to go get food, go to the toilet and buy merch (which was all optional). Reni told us where to meet and we did. The concert was supposed to start at 8:00pm but MARS were “fashionably late” and didn’t start the show until 9:00pm. All was amazing! Reni asked me and a few others to help throw the balloons into the crowed and warned us that we will get hit by them. And she was right, we did. Jared made us all have a 2 hour cardio work out as there were a lot of jumping involved. When Do or Die was played, Jared told everyone to get on each others shoulders. Even though I was side stage, I climbed onto my cousins shoulders. The downside was that the security told us to get down (probably for health and safety. After a few more songs, one of their new songs called Rider was played, at the end of the song, it looked as if the show has ended. I’d say quite a few hundred people left and a few mins later they started performing again. Loved how they played the full band version of The Kill but sad that Tomo wasn’t there so it didn’t make it all feel right. Finally it came to the last song, Closer to the Edge. Me and the few others who had the Up in The Air package were brought on stage and then the others brought from the crowed joined. It was really really fun. An adult decided to push through and force me to the back which I found really rude considering I was shorter then her and was there first. Another plus was that I watched back the live stream and saw me on there! If you asked other people, their experience would be different. In all honesty, how they act depends on what city they are in and how they are feeling. I’d totally recommend going to a MARS concert. There isn’t anything like it! It’s unique, engaging and down right awesome! It is definitely worth the £2000 in my opinion.

I grew up listening to music, but 30 Seconds To Mars are the reason I love live music, and why I now jump at the chance to go to any concert. Going to a MARS show is, for me, the community, and the spirituality that I think so many other people have found in religion.

To date, I've been to 34 30STM gigs since 2006, and I've loved every single one. Right from the off, the Echelon, the super hardcore community of fans (you can usually count on at least half of the first 50 people in line at any gig have at least one MARS related tattoo and/or are not from the state/province/country the band in playing in), were what made me aware how special it was to be a part of a live show. I was welcomed immediately as part of the family, because I loved the music, and that was all the criteria needed.

And speaking of being a part of a live show... I've NEVER met another band, never gone to another artist's show, where the crowd is encouraged to participate in everything. If you go to a show, and sing along, and dance crazy, and/or wear a funny hat/costume/face paint, you're pretty much guaranteed to get pulled on stage to dance with the band for the last song, if not before. Expect to go crazy, to jump a LOT, so wear comfortable shoes! there will be crowdsurfers, there may be a mosh pit, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life (I'm still friends with almost all of the people I met at my first show, and every show subsequently feels like a family reunion).

Nowadays I am just as excited to see all my friends I only see at shows, as I am to rock out and sing along to my favorite songs, and enjoy such a high spirited performance for at least 2 hours.

The setlists are never the same, there's gonna be some great acoustic tunes in the middle, and at least one song that'll make you want to cry, and one that'll make you remember how utterly amazing it is to be alive.

The venues I've seen 30STM in, have all been pretty small (under 5000), and that is what you can expect in North America, whereas the rest of the world are usually pretty huge stadiums, and the expansiveness of their music, from what I have seen, it doesn't matter the size of the venue.

My most memorable gigs to date have been their Guinness World Record breaking show in NYC in 2011, and the original Church shows, at St Peter's Church, in NYC, where it was all acoustic awesome for 250 people.

Also, lots of bands have overpriced VIP, but Mars is the only one I consider worth it, because not only to you get to meet them, but you get to dance on stage with them, for the entire show.

MARS' music makes me feel better about life, and has helped me (and so many others I know) reach for their dreams.

Provehito in Altum!

I saw Thirty Seconds to Mars yesterday at the This is Tomorrow Festival Newcastle Spillers Wilf.

The band had two supporting acts Don Broco whom I predict will be really big in future and the cute band the Marmozets who were interesting to watch live.

After those two taste bud wetting starters on to the delicious main course of Thirty Seconds to Mars; who played a mix of old material like Do or Die complete with Union Jack flag wave and City of Angles as well as a sprinkle of new material from their critic splitting fifth studio album America like Dangerous Night and the inspired Walk on Water.

Overall the band played a great set but some of their Thirty Seconds to Mars elements where missing like the fan favourite ballons due to the festival being outside. Jared and Shannon have just come back to this year Monolith Tour 2018 after taking a 2-week break.

Jared's voice was all stronger for being rested and Shannon easily got back into his drumming grove.

The band played a set of 11 songs overall. The festival was bussing and everyone had a good time. Jared and Shannon included a lot of audience participation in their show and allowed some members of the crowd on stage with them.

By the time the confetti cannons went off to the closing song 'Closer to the Edge', the crowd was roaring for the more and the band was pumped.

All in all it was great show; which allowed new talent to shine and Thirty Seconds to Mars to really get into a lush pumping grove just singing!

Good show overall. A few problems tho. We paid a lot of money for front row and were irritated Jared "invited" everybody to come down to the front, shoving us back against our seats. We were packed in like sardines with no way to exit. It was unbearably hot anyway (91 degrees and 60% humidity) and I thought I was going to faint. Thank God security saw the situation was becoming dangerous and starting telling people to go back to their own seats. Jared stupidly stopped in mid-song and started berating security personnel for disrupting his show! I know he wants to be the cool anti-hero and all but he needs to think about the safety of his fans before he speaks. If it had gone on there would have been some serious medical emergencies. Besides that, Jared is an entertaining performer even though the show is very predictable from night to night. Had the feel of Jared going through the motions like a finely oiled machine. No encores (as usual). Not as much fan interaction as there used to be back in the day. Jared didn't go into the audience on this night and Shannon seemed painfully uncomfortable when he had to sing. The stage looks really empty with just the two band members left. Three out of five stars. Not one of their better shows. May be time for this band to call it a day. They had a good run.

I went to the concert full of expectations and hopes that it will be great as their concert 3 or 4 years ago in Prague with A Beautiful Lie album because since then the concerts are worse and worse every year. Year after Jared couldnt even sing after the hundreds of shows they did, so he just held his microphone to the crowd or had people on stage and talked to them for like half an hour, next year they did Cirque du Soleil show, just awful. Unfortunately it was huge disappointment again:( They had no Shannon, and instead of finding a replacement for the shows without Shannon, they had drums on playback. It was like going to a concert of classical music where there are no violins. Another disappointment was that Jared didnt even mention Shannon, or any apology for not having live drums. They should realize that some people are going to their concerts because of their music, not because of Jared's looks. If you want to go their concert, definitely wait until Shannon joins them, nothing beats the sound of live drums. Every year I go to their concert hoping ..... maybe next year it will be great again :)

Thirty Seconds to Mars is one of the best bands I've ever seen live! It was an amazing concert! I can't even explain the energy I felt by the second they got on stage. They really take care of the fact that everyone should be having fun and be part of the concert. They want fans to be able to sing they most famous songs with them. It's like you are in a living room at your home with them and a couple of friends and you're all singing around like it's a camping or something like that. I mean, they actually asked the crowd which song we wanted to hear. Amazing! I went with my friend, who likes the band but it's not a fan at all, and she came out of the stadium completely in love with them. I can tell she definitely had fun. She was jumping around and singing. It was a beautiful experience. I think that if you ever get the chance to see them live, whether at a concert o festival, you should totally go. It's totally worth it and I'm telling you, you'll have lots of fun and will forget about everything for about two hours.

I was pretty disappointed actually! I came specifically to see them and felt underwhelmed by their performance. The sound quality was not good - referring to both the mics and the instruments. Given that most people were there for Muse, when they put their mic up to the crowd, there was a lot of silence, as opposed to a crowd singing in harmony. I would have preferred if they just sang and thrashed, like they know how. In that regard, before a few of their songs, they would rehearse crowd participation parts of the song, as if they were concerned that the crowd did not know what was coming. I thought this was kind of annoying. Also, "The Kill" as an acoustic song does not work.

On the other hand, I had no expectations of Muse and was blown away in the best possible way. The smashed it. Good for them.

Thirty seconds to mars are amazing first time ever to a concert ,would definitely go back but not the seating as the screen was hard to see and mostly covered by hanging lights .All in all was an amazing night that my cousin and I will never forget,Actually looking at the Birmingham tickets thinking of going again .Was very impressed by Jared Leto he put a lot into his performance and made the audience fell appreciated e.g wearing tartan and kilt flying the Scottish flag about the stage he’s an amazing performer and what a voice Shannon on the drums was amazing and also interacted with the audience.Great respect for the band ,just wish they had been able to have more dates in Scotland I have to keep pinching myself I was really there I’m so privileged to have been there Thankyou

Second time I've seen them live with the first time being 5yrs ago, and have to say last night was extremely disappointing, the stage set up was awful and looked lost in the middle of the floor as did the only two band members up there in Jared and Shannon. I pay to see the band not half of them.they released 20 or more huge balloons that at least brought some excitement to the show but when everyone directed them at the stage you couldn't see a thing!!!! Twice now they've not played one of the biggest hits that made them in "from yesterday" very very disappointing. All in all very very poor show which having no support act to warm everyone up and get ppl in the mood didn't help one bit, i can safely say i won't be paying to see them again.

Thirty Seconds to Mars were incredible to see live and I'm really happy that I finally go to see them, because they're my favourite band. Jared was an amazing performer, as always, and brought life to the crowd and stage. I was disappointed, however, because Shannon was not there and the drums were a playback on the speakers. This was really disappointing because I love seeing Shannon play and feel like the stage was empty without him. Considering how much Jared cares for his fans, it should be expected that Shannon does the same. The band should feel at least slightly obligated to satisfy the fans. Nevertheless, based on my concert experience, Thirty Seconds to Mars put on a show that can't be missed.

Thirty Seconds To Mars announce huge world tour for 2024

Thirty Seconds To Mars have just announced a ton of shows across the globe for next year, in support of new album It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day.

Words: Kerrang! staff

November 9th 2023, 3:30p.m.

Thirty Seconds To Mars have announced details of an extensive global tour across the UK, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

In typical eccentric fashion, the announcement was marked by Jared Leto climbing the Empire State Building in New York City. “The building is a testament of all the things that can be done in the world if we put our minds to it," says Jared, "which is largely the inspiration behind our most recent album, It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day.”

The tour kicks off in March next year with a string of festival shows in South America, before heading to the UK for April and May, then on to a summer trek across North America, finally rounding off Down Under in September. Phew!

AFI , Poppy and KennyHoopla will be supporting on the U.S. jaunt, but supports are yet to be revealed for other dates.

Thirty Seconds to Mars - Seasons

Jared Leto ir kultinė roko grupė „30 Seconds To Mars“ skelbia apie koncertą Lietuvoje

Kultinė amerikiečių roko grupė „30 Seconds To Mars“ surengs koncertą Lietuvoje. „Oskaro“ laimėtojas aktorius ir muzikantas Jared Leto pranešė apie grupės pasaulinių gastrolių „Seasons World Tour 2024“ papildomus šou. Šiandien didžiausias Baltijos šalių koncertų rengėjas „Live Nation Lietuva“ oficialiai skelbia, kad „30 Seconds To Mars“ koncertas įvyks spalio 4-ąją dieną „Žalgirio“ arenoje Kaune. Tai yra pirmosios grupės gastrolės po daugiau nei penkerių metų pertraukos. Turo metu rokeriai pristato pernai išleistą studijinį albumą „It's The End Of The World But It's A Beautiful Day“ ir atlieka didžiausius savo hitus.

Vieša bilietų prekyba į roko grupės „30 Seconds To Mars“ koncertą Kaune prasidės jau šį penktadienį (balandžio 26 d.) nuo 10 val. visose „Bilietai.lt“ kasose ir internete:  www.bilietai.lt . Dviem dienom anksčiau, trečiadienį (balandžio 24 d.), nuo 10 val. pirmieji bilietus galės įsigyti „Live Nation Lietuva“ koncertų klubo nariai ( http://bit.ly/LiveNationConcertClub ).

Apie milžiniško dydžio pasaulines gastroles „Seasons World Tour 2024“ grupės lyderis Jared Leto gerbėjams pranešė ypatingai. Specialiai šiai progai, pernai lapkričio mėnesį aktorius ir muzikantas ryžosi įkopti į vieną aukščiausią pasaulio pastatą – 102 aukštų dangoraižį „Empire State Building“ Niujorke, Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose.

Jared Leto užkopė į „Empire State Building“ dangoraižį Niujorke (JAV):  https://youtu.be/XmTpQmHE1FA

Mes jus mylime. Netrukus pasimatysime!“.

Daugiaplatininiais tiražais parduotus albumus išleidusi grupė „30 Seconds To Mars“, kurią groja broliai Jared ir Shannon Leto, triumfuodama grįžo su šeštuoju studijiniu albumu „It's The End Of The World But It's A Beautiful Day“, kurį įrašų kompanija Concord Records išleido praėjusių metų rugsėjo 15-ąją dieną.

Apie grupę „30 Seconds To Mars“

Grupė „30 Seconds To Mars“, kurią sudaro broliai Jared ir Shannon Leto, yra iš Los Andželo, Kalifornijos. Grupės debiutinis albumas „30 Seconds To Mars“ buvo išleistas 2002 m. ir tebėra kultinis. Pasaulinės sėkmės rokeriai sulaukė išleidę antrąjį albumą „A Beautiful Lie“ (2005 m.), kurio buvo parduota daugiau nei 5 mln. kopijų. Kitas jų albumas „This Is War“ pasirodė 2009 m. Šio albumo įrašymo procesą paženklino teisinis ginčas su įrašų kompanija „EMI“, kuris įamžintas apdovanojimus ir pripažinimą pelniusiame dokumentiniame filme „Artifact“ (2012 m.). Ketvirtąjį albumą „Love, Lust, Faith And Dreams“, sulaukusį kritikų ir komercinės sėkmės, „30 Seconds To Mars“ išleido 2013 m. 2018 m. grupė įrašė ir išleido penktąjį albumą America, o šeštasis ir kol kas naujausias „30 Seconds To Mars“ studijinis darbas „It's The End Of The World But It's A Beautiful Day“ pasirodė 2023 m.

La Vuelta Femenina 2024: Route, How to Watch, and Favorites

Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Gaia Realini will battle for the red jersey on the challenging eight-stage tour across Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 5

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

As of this Sunday, April 29, we’re officially in Grand Tour season, as the eight-stage Vuelta Femenina kicks off with a 16-kilometer team time trial in Valencia, Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

Last year’s race covered just over 740 kilometers over the course of its seven stages. It was won by Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten , who, with the win, became the first woman to win all three of the major women’s stage races (the Vuelta, along with the Tour de France Femmes, and the Giro Donne). She beat SD Worx’s Demi Vollering but just nine seconds. Trek-Segafredo’s Gaia Realini rounded out the podium in third.

But van Vleuten retired after last season, meaning there’s no chance for a repeat winner. And given the variety of winners we’ve seen in the women’s peloton this spring, this race is truly up for grabs.

This year’s race adds a stage, making it eight in total. All of them stick exclusively to Spain’s northwest and northcentral regions.

It kicks off with what should be a blistering team time trial over 16 lake-flat kilometers. From there, the second stage will take riders from Buñol to Moncofa over 118 hilly kilometers, including just one Category 3 climb. As that climb comes 40 kilometers from the finish, expect a bunch sprint.

The third stage is a 131-kilometer medium mountain stage that will take riders from Lucena to Teruel and feature another Category 3 ascent. Stage four covers 142 kilometers from Molina de Aragón to Zaragoza and is mostly downhill from start to finish.

map

The 113 kilometers of stage 5 are where the peloton first gets into proper mountains, with a pair of category 2 climbs—one of which provides the day’s summit finish—on the menu. Stage 6 is the opposite of stage 4, taking riders on a daylong gradual uphill from Tarazona to Laguna Negra, ending with a category 1 summit finish that very well could determine the race’s overall winner.

Stage 7 could be the last chance for the sprinters to leave their mark. However, the final 500 meters of the day’s 126 kilometers ramp up to 10%, so look for a punchier rider to take the win there.

The Vuelta Feminina will end with an 89-kilometer ride from Distrito Telefónca to ValdesquíMadrid. The ride features a pair of category-1 climbs, the last of which leads to the race’s final finish line.

Complete information on each stage can be found here .

How to Watch

The Vuelta Feminina will be broadcast in the US via Peacock , which costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In Canada, the race will be broadcast via FloSports , which costs $12.50 per month or $150 per year.

Live Stream Schedule - All times Eastern (EDT) 04/28 - Stage 1 Valencia > Valencia - 9:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. 04/29 - Stage 2 Buñol > Moncófar - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 04/30 - Stage 3 Lucena del Cid > Teruel - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/01 - Stage 4 Molina de Aragón > Zaragoza - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/02 - Stage 5 Huesca > Jaca - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/03 - Stage 6 Tarazona > Vinuesa - 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 05/04 - Stage 7 San Esteban de Gormaz > Sigüenza - 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. 05/05 - Stage 8 Distrito Telefónica. Madrid > Valdesquí - 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

Riders to Watch

While the final roster for the race is yet to be final, several confirmed names promise another competitive edition. Among the riders targeting the general classification are Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering of SD Worx-Protime, Gaia Realini of Lidl-Trek, who graced the podium last year, and the consistently impressive Kasia Niewiadoma of SD Worx-Protime. With the absence of retired defending champion Anemiek Van Vleuten and Vollering showing signs of wavering form this season, the battle for the coveted red jersey appears wide open.

Other riders to watch are the 2024 Tour of Flanders champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM’s Ricarda Bauernfeind , and Mavi García of Liv Alula Jayco.

Analysing Ineos Grenadiers’ 2024 Giro d’Italia team

After narrowly missing out on the win in 2023, Geraint Thomas will return to the Italian Grand Tour backed by a strong Ineos Grenadiers line-up

Geraint Thomas and his teammates will hope to win the pink jersey in Italy

Ineos Grenadiers will enter the 2024 Giro d’Italia with last year’s bruising near miss still fresh in the memory. Having grasped the pink jersey for much of the race, it was cruelly taken from Geraint Thomas by Primož Roglič on the penultimate stage time trial.

The Welshman returns to the Italian Grand Tour in May with a sense of unfinished business, although he arguably faces a tougher task if he wants to right last year’s wrong, amid the name of Tadej Pogačar on the start list.

While the Slovenian will start as the out-and-out favourite, Ineos Grenadiers have multiple cards to play along with a strong support cast of riders. Having already promised an aggressive style of racing, many eyes will be on the British team, but what can we expect from Thomas and his teammates?

Here’s a breakdown of the role each rider in the team could play in the first Grand Tour of the year.

Filippo Ganna

Filippo Ganna is winless so far in 2024

Filippo Ganna is winless so far in 2024

Age: 27 Giro d’Italia experience: Three starts, six stage wins

Filippo Ganna ’s added firepower will give Ineos Grenadiers a vital edge over a number of their rivals. He’s a world-class athlete who can do the work of several riders when it comes to setting the pace on the flat, while his endurance and positioning are phenomenal attributes.

He’ll vie for victory in the time trials, and can even compete for sprints in reduced groups, as he showed at the Vuelta a España last year - although the calibre of sprinters is higher at the Giro - and he’ll be a valuable addition to Geraint Thomas’ GC hopes. He’s not won yet this season, so will be itching to get that first victory before building up towards the Olympic Games in Paris.

Magnus Sheffield

Age: 22 Giro d’Italia experience: Debutant

Injury robbed Magnus Sheffield of a spot in last year’s Tour de France but he returns this year to make his Grand Tour debut in what could be a breakthrough campaign for the young American. He’s been on point all season, coming close to a stage in the Volta ao Algarve and finishing sixth in the Tour of Flanders.

Currently racing in the Tour de Romandie, the 22-year-old is putting the finishing touches to his pre-Giro training, and he’ll go into the race looking to gain experience, support his leaders and potentially pick up results. The two time trials look like specific stages he can target, while his role as a domestique will very much depend on how his body recovers throughout three weeks of racing.

Having signed a recent contract extension on the team, it’s clear that Ineos believe that Sheffield is the real deal and that he can develop into a world beater and this Giro Odyssey will very much form a stepping stone in that journey. He’ll learn from Ganna, of that there’s no doubt, and then pick up tips and tricks along the way from the likes of Thomas and the Swifts.

Tobias Foss

Tobias Foss will start his first GrandTour in Ineos Grenadiers' colours

Tobias Foss will start his first GrandTour in Ineos Grenadiers' colours

Age: 26 Giro d’Italia experience: Three starts, ninth overall in 2021

The Norwegian’s protracted transfer from Visma-Lease a Bike was one of the stories that dominated Ineos’ signing saga last summer but the 26-year-old has settled in perfectly since then. Overcoming glandular fever took time and patience but he’s already rewarded his team with a win this season, and heads into the Giro d’Italia with his tail up.

Once pigeonholed as a GC prospect following his ninth overall place in 2021, Foss looks more accustomed to providing support and cover for Thomas and Arensman. With few pure climbers outside of their leadership duo, Foss will have a huge amount of responsibility on his shoulders. He climbs better than Ganna, and given this is Sheffield’s first Grand Tour, the former world TT champion will likely be the last line of defence before Arensman and Thomas have to start hitting the front in the mountains. On the one hand, that might be somewhat of a risk given the fact that Foss hasn’t raced a Grand Tour in two years, but Ineos clearly trust him to deliver.

Jhonatan Narváez

Age: 27 Giro d’Italia experience: Four starts, one stage win

Injury curtailed Jhonatan Narváez's impressive start to the season that at one point saw him lead the line for Ineos in the Spring Classics. He’s still the only rider on the team to win multiple races on the road this year, and it’s almost remarkable that he’s still only in his mid-20s, having seemingly been on the scene for years.

As ever, he’ll have the freedom to compete in some of the lumpy and technical finishes that pepper the race, while also having a support role when called upon. He hasn’t raced since his crash in Gent-Wevelgem, but Ineos are confident that the form is where it needs to be before the season's first Grand Tour.

Out of contract at the end of the current campaign, it’s more than likely that an extension will follow given Ineos’ track record in keeping their domestiques in recent years, and a strong showing through Italy will no doubt help the Ecuadorian who edged out Elia Viviani and Salvatore Puccio for a slot on the Giro team.

Age: 36 Giro d’Italia experience: Making his sixth start

Since returning to Ineos at the start of 2020, Swift has made the Giro d’Italia his regular Grand Tour assignment with three starts in the last four years. His renaissance as a trusted domestique has no doubt prolonged his career and given him a new lease of life, and while his sprint days are behind him, the veteran is probably enjoying the most settled phase of his career. It’s worth pointing out that he’s helped teammates win or finish second in the Giro on his last three starts in the race, and he’s a more accomplished climber than many give him credit for.

Like his cousin, Connor, he’ll form the guard around Thomas on the flat and carry out domestique duties wherever called upon, probably helping to keep his leader safe in the fast finishes that can always throw up incidents and danger. It’s also true that Swift will take on the role of road captain on the team in the absence of Salvatore Puccio, who has been a mainstay in Ineos’ Giro squad for over a decade, but has missed out on selection.

Back in 2009, Swift made his Giro debut alongside Pavel Brutt and Filippo Pozzato as a fresh-faced neo-pro. All these years later he’s still kicking around, and still an important rider in his team’s challenge. Longevity might not make many headlines but that’s a pretty impressive achievement.

Connor Swift

Age: 28 Giro d’Italia experience: Set to make his debut

Connor Swift missed out on Grand Tour selection in 2023 but it shouldn’t be forgotten that he made the Tour de France team for three consecutive years between 2020 and 2022. This will mark his Giro d’Italia debut and the consensus is that he’ll form part of the core of the squad that will protect Thomas and, possibly, Arensman on the flat and through some of the notoriously tricky stages that litter the first half of the race.

A solid climber on small to medium ascents, he’ll also form a bridge between the likes of Ganna, Ben Swift and the pure climbers on the team. He’s a solid pick who will get on with his job without fuss or distraction, and in that sense, he’s a sports director’s dream.

Thymen Arensman

Age: 24 Giro d’Italia experience: Two starts, one top-ten on GC

Thymen Arensman finished in the top ten last year, claiming sixth overall, and he probably didn’t get the credit he deserved for his performance on what was his Giro debut. He was a formidable teammate for Thomas, rode an astute race and cemented his place within Ineos’ hierarchy as a dependable yet still developing stage racer.

Crashing out of the Vuelta a España a few months later was a massive setback but this year he’s been flying under the radar with some decent results, including top-tens in Tirreno-Adriatico and and Volta ao Algarve.

He’s currently racing at the Tour de Romandie where he’ll fine-tune his form, and while Thomas starts as the undisputed number one on paper, the Giro has a knack for throwing up a curve ball or two. Arensman will have more responsibility on his shoulders regardless of pecking order given that Laurens De Plus has been saved for the Tour this year and is skipping the Giro, but it’s also a contract year for the Dutch rider and he’s one of the few GC riders on the market. Ineos haven’t announced a contract extension, so it will be interesting to see how Arensman responds to questions, focuses on the race and navigates a path between support role and riding for his own future.

Geraint Thomas

Geraint Thomas led the Giro d'Italia for much of the race in 2023

Geraint Thomas led the Giro d'Italia for much of the race in 2023

Age: 37 Giro d’Italia experience: Five starts, second overall on GC in 2023

Everyone has seemingly written Geraint Thomas off before a single pedal stroke at this year’s Giro d’Italia. Too old, too slow, too unlike Tadej Pogačar, but the reality is that Welshman is a Grand Tour winner who came within a whisker of beating Primož Roglič in last year’s Giro d’Italia. Roglič ended the race the stronger of the two, but a mere 14 seconds separated Thomas from victory over one of the best stage races over the last five years. That’s impressive for a veteran rider who was seen as over the hill by his own team back in 2020.

Of course, Pogačar starts as the out-and-out favourite - he does in almost every single race he enters - but the Giro d’Italia isn’t the Tour de France, and there’s a much higher degree of unpredictability when it comes to the first Grand Tour of the season. The weather, sickness, crazy breaks that generate 30 minutes, and countless polemics, can all break out without a moment’s notice and it’s somewhat disrespectful to effectively hand Pogačar the maglia rosa now.

Of course, to be in with a chance of winning, Thomas has to be at his very best, even better than last year, and the question of age is relevant when it comes to a 37-year-old but he’s now in the third year of a new training pattern, looks relaxed and confident, and knows exactly how to peak for this race. He does need to outfox or wait for Pogačar to make a mistake through complacency, because in a straight-up fight, he’ll lose, but that’s part and parcel of stage racing. Pogačar should win, but that doesn’t mean he will.
