Virtual Exhibition Brings Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches to Addis

ADDIS ABABA – A three-dimensional virtual exhibition showing the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela has become open for visitors.

The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches of the 13th century are situated in a mountainous region in northern Ethiopia.

The 3D virtual exhibition has now allowed visitors in Addis Ababa to tour the world heritage site at the Entoto Fine Arts Center.

Entitled ‘Lalibela Carving Faith’, the organizers say it displays the archeology and Scenography of the rock-hewn churches through virtual reality.

Tourism Minister Nasise Chali said the implementation of innovation and digitalization in tourism helps to promote historical, social, and cultural values.

The minister has invited both local and foreign tourists to visit the exhibition and have a unique tour experience of the churches in 3D.

Lalibela rock-hewn churches administration, Tourism Ethiopia, and the French embassy in Ethiopia are among the organizers of the exhibition.

French Ambassador to Ethiopia, Remi Marechaux said the exhibition “is the first of its kind in all of Africa.”

“This exhibition is also unique in digital dimension,” Ambassador Remi said.

“This 3D experience taking the measurement to billion points inside the churches provides for visitors a visual reality which is closer – even more accurate than you can do at any visit inside.”

The virtual show, launched on Oct 7, will remain open for public visits free of changes for two months.

Begun in the 12th century by King Lalibela, the complex of 11 Rock-Hewn Churches was among the first cultural sites to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.

Lalibela still serves as a spiritual center for Ethiopian Christians, attracting hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.

Discover Ethiopian UNESCO site

Melka Konture is a pre-historic site situated on the southern face of the Awash River Gorge opposite Melka Awash. It is regarded as one of the most important Stone Age sites in Ethiopia. The rock hewn-church of Adadi Mariam at Lalibela was built in the 12th century. In fact, local tradition ascribes it to King Lalibela who is said to have had it built on his visit to Mount Zuqwala in 1106. Driving further south, we will find Tiya, where you will see the northernmost example of a peculiar type of engraved, standing stele that stretches across parts of southern Ethiopia. The stele at Tiya are believed to have been erected between the 12th and 14th centuries and are almost certainly grave markers. If you choose me as your guide to this specific destinations, you will get the best memories about the area since I have been traveling to these sites as a guide for the last 16 years. After an early breakfast, will head south-west towards Jimma, to take a turn to the route to Butajira. It will lead us to one of the biggest Neolithic stations in Ethiopia - Melka Kunture. It is located near the gorge, in which flows the river Awash in the vicinity of the city of Melka Awash. The museum exhibits tools and utilitarian objects discovered there. Then, we will follow the same route towards the city of Butarija, to take a right turn to the gravel road, near which the Rock Temple, Adadi Mariam is located. It was established at the same time that rock hewed Churches in Lalibela - in 12th century. The last point of our trip will be a visit in Tiya. There are rock grave stales created around 800 years ago. It is a graveyard, on which buried were many people of both sexes from 18 to 30 in a fetal position.
