Green day’s billie joe armstrong “was getting choked up” playing ‘american idiot’ in full ahead of stadium tour.

Green Day ‘s upcoming world stadium tour will include full album performances of 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot each night in honor of their respective 30th and 20th anniversaries. The band has been warming up for the trek with smaller, last-minute club shows, including playing American Idiot in its entirety during a recent gig in San Francisco.

“ American Idiot was sort of this unicorn that [during its album cycle] we were like, ‘OK, let’s get past this and move on,'” front man Billie Joe Armstrong tells Billboard . “Revisiting it [in San Francisco] was cathartic, for lack of a better cliché. Playing songs like ‘Extraordinary Girl’ and ‘Whatsername,’ there were times on stage where I was getting choked up because it was bringing me back the feeling that I had at that time, that I was revisiting for the first time in 20 years. I had a great sense of pride and I was sort of humbled by the experience.”

In addition to getting emotional himself, Armstrong noticed people in the audience crying.

“I saw this one person that was in the crowd that was transgender, and I could see the tears coming out,” Armstrong says. “I realized how far we’ve come. Green Day has been a space for people to feel a connection with people that are kindred spirits … I was kind of taken aback by it.”

Armstrong adds that he feels rock albums are a “work of art,” and he’s a fan of bands playing their past records in full.

“This sounds really pretentious, but it’s like when an orchestra is playing Mozart ,” he says. “I think rock music is just as important.”

The U.S. leg of Green Day’s stadium tour will launch in July.

“The melodies are based on the tradition of Lennon and McCartney,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong tells Billboard today. “That’s where we were trying to push our stuff and take our melodies and the whole idea of Green Day – pushing it to a level that we thought could be our Tommy moment, or our Sgt. Pepper’s .”

All told, American Idiot snagged six Grammy nominations (winning Best Rock Album), was certified six-times platinum by the RIAA, and launched a 17-month world tour that spawned the live album Bullet in a Bible . In a couple short years, Green Day went from possibly-over-the-hump ’90s greats to being in the mix for the world’s biggest rock band.

Recently, Armstrong says, a fan approached him at London’s BRIT Awards. “They go, ‘ American Idiot changed my life.’ And I said, ‘It changed my life too!'” he recalls with a laugh. “It changed everything for me. … It really made me feel like I can spread my wings. It proved to me that, if you have the guts to do it, then you can make it happen. When you have a hunch that it’s time to make a big statement, musically, and it gets acknowledged, it’s the best feeling ever.”

In the years since its release, American Idiot ’s stature has only grown. Green Day has frequently harnessed the album’s urgent political energy since, including for this year’s Saviors , and American Idiot became the basis of the Tony-winning 2009 musical of the same name. Its songs remain staples of the band’s concerts, and Green Day has made headlines in recent years by revising the title track’s lyrics to address former President Donald Trump. This year, the band will perform American Idiot — as well as another of its seminal albums celebrating a milestone anniversary, 1994’s Dookie — in full on The Saviors Tour of North American stadiums.

Take me back to 2003, and Green Day’s headspace when you went into the studio to record American Idiot . After the ’90s and Warning , did you see American Idiot as the start of Green Day 2.0?

When we did Warning , we were definitely trying to do something different from [our] sound than we’d ever done before. It was a little bit more folky, a lot more acoustic guitar. That was foreshadowing for what would end up becoming American Idiot . We had a studio that we were going into every day in Oakland called [Studio] 880, and we just started to experiment in there. We were like the inmates running the asylum for months. Then we came upon doing a concept record that was right in the middle of the George Bush administration and the war in Iraq.

To what extent when you went in were you planning on this being a more political record? Or did that emerge organically during your sessions and your experimentation?

When I wrote the song “American Idiot” is when. It was just such a bold statement – bolder than I had ever said before politically. When we started [recording], we just talked about the song and we were all on the same page. It felt dangerous and risky and fun at the same time, if that’s even possible. We all agreed that this was the right way to go. And then with that came songs like “Holiday.”

It’s hard to imagine a single that’s more in your face than “American Idiot,” in both sound and subject matter. Was there any resistance from your team or your label about that being the lead single?

“American Idiot” has taken on this second life – you’ve called out President Trump a number of times when performing that song in recent years. Did you ever think when you were making it that it would end up being a living document, and that the ills it documented would persist long after the Bush era?

I don’t really know what I thought, like what kind of legs that that song was gonna have. I remember when Trump got into office, that song was getting played a lot. The first trip that he took to England, [a British social media campaign was] trying to get “American Idiot” to go No. 1. I think it got to number two. [ Laughs. ] When the song first came out, I think we were like, “This could blow up in our faces, but who cares? We’ve said something that we really felt strongly about.” Then, as the record kept getting bigger and bigger, I just said, “Man, we really made something that is special that’s gonna stand the test of time.”

A political record and tackling some of these themes would have been challenging enough, but then you had the rock opera concept and story on top of it. Why was that narrative structure the right way to present this subject matter?

It made the record personal. It was coming from the heart. And then, it was also not just finger pointing, but questioning my own ignorance, at the same time, and posing the questions to myself. The one thing about a lot of punk-rock bands that are political, it seems that they come across as politicians. For me, it was just — the one thing we all have in common is that we’re living the human experience. So I wanted the songs to come from the heart as much as they came from the head.

9/11 defined a generation in the same way that the Vietnam War defined a generation. It was just that sort of era of fear that every generation has to endure. When the Twin Towers fell down, it created a generation of paranoia. Looking back, three years after 9/11, a lot of people when they heard the music [on American Idiot ], [there was] this push back [happening] and [we] created like a soundtrack for that push back.

“American Idiot” and “Holiday” were very political – and very successful – singles. But American Idiot spawned two even bigger, less politically oriented singles: “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” How do these pop crossover moments fit into the album as a whole?

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” became a part of the narrative of the record, because [it’s what the] Jesus of Suburbia character was going through. That song, it comes across as someone growing up that feels very self-righteous, until they come across into the real world and find [themselves] in a very lonely place. I wrote that song when I was spending time in New York. I was by myself, and not knowing really anything about New York, I just sort of dropped myself right into the Lower East Side. I honestly didn’t know where I was at. I have a horrible sense of direction. That that song is exactly that: It’s about my horrible sense of direction.

For us, power-pop or whatever, we just wanted to bring it to a new level. A lot of that music at that time, as far as the pop-punk stuff was, it just became, like, commercial on purpose. [ Laughs. ] The pop-punk stuff, it just seemed trivial. It seemed really generic, and I didn’t really like it at all. The subject matter was just really shallow. It felt paint by numbers. The New York stuff that was going on, where it was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Strokes and Interpol, felt very real to me — because it felt like a scene, and it felt like people were very serious about making music. I found that to be really inspiring.

You’re playing American Idiot and Dookie all the way through this summer to celebrate their respective 20th and 30th anniversaries. As you’ve revisited American Idiot ahead of that tour, what has stood out to you?

American Idiot was sort of this unicorn that [during its album cycle] we were like, “OK, let’s get past this and move on.” We played it in its entirety at the Fillmore [in San Francisco] the other night. Revisiting it was cathartic, for lack of a better cliché. Playing songs like “Extraordinary Girl” and “Whatsername,” there were times on stage where I was getting choked up because it was bringing me back the feeling that I had at that time, that I was revisiting for the first time in 20 years. I had a great sense of pride and I was sort of humbled by the experience.

More and more artists are doing tours where they play classic albums in full. Why is that an effective way to connect with fans?

One of the most adventurous parts of American Idiot is “Jesus of Suburbia,” the five-part, nine-minute epic. It’s still a fan favorite. Did you have any doubts when putting that song together – and has its longevity surprised you?

“Jesus of Suburbia,” that’s one of my proudest moments for Green Day. I remember the first time that we ever played it [in July 2004]. We were rehearsing at the Olympic Auditorium down in Los Angeles. We were really tight. We were playing every day and we thought, “Hey, let’s do a cheap ticket, people can come see us play.” That was the first time that we played it in front of people. They kind of couldn’t believe what we had done. It was this nine-minute epic, where people were used to our two-and-a-half, three-minute songs. The reaction was so positive in a way where people just couldn’t believe what they were hearing. I’m really proud of that song and how it was inspired by The Who and we just got to have that moment.

We don’t see rock smashes quite like American Idiot these days. What are your thoughts about the arc of rock as a mainstream genre – and how it fits into the pop landscape – since American Idiot came out?

There’s a lot of great rock music that’s out right now. And I think, in a way, it’s more popular than ever. You see these festivals that are popping up all over America. Something like Aftershock [in Sacramento] – they’re huge! Like, 50,000 people are coming out. To me, that feels like rock is bigger than it’s ever been, especially in the last 10 years. It just doesn’t get covered.

American Idiot World Tour

  • View history

The American Idiot World Tour was a worldwide concert tour by the band Green Day , lasting from July 29, 2004 to December 17, 2005. The tour was to help show support for their newly released album, American Idiot across its 161 shows from North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia. It remains both the band's longest tour and the biggest tour by the number of shows.

Background [ ]

Prior to the release of American Idiot, Green Day first live premiered the singles "American Idiot" and "Jesus of Suburbia" at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California with later live premiering the entire album at the Fonda in Los Angeles, 5 days before the album was set to be released. The second round of shows in North America, which would become the fifth leg in the tour was announced near the end of the second leg in Europe in February of 2005. The third round of shows in North America, which would become the seventh leg in the tour was announced in May of 2005 near the end of the fifth leg. The tour wrapped up with a final leg with two shows in Oceania.

The tour would also be supported by opening artists with a total of 7 different bands preforming different shows. These included bands like My Chemical Romance, Simple Plan, Jimmy Eat World and Against Me! Since there wasn't a set schedule for bands to preform opening acts, one show could have multiple artists opening while the next show could have no opening artists present. For most of the shows throughout the tour, only Green Day would be present with no opening acts.

Bullet in a Bible [ ]

During leg sixth of the tour on the second round of Europe concerts, the band recorded the live album Bullet in a Bible during the June 18–19 concerts at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes, England where over 130,000 people attended the event. It would be released on November 15, 2005 with a majority of songs on the set list present within the album.

Set List [ ]

Throughout most of the tour, Green Day's set list remained consistent with most concerts featuring the most recognized songs from American Idiot, mixed in with other big hits. An average set list would contain around 15 songs from various albums, with an encore containing 4 various other songs. Some shows however, especially in earlier legs of the tour, would sometimes play the entirety of the album as the set list. The following is a incomplete list of most fully-played songs during the tour.

Tour Dates [ ]

Reception [ ].

From the entirety of the American Idiot World Tour, the band have estimated to gross at least $70 million across its 161 shows during its run. Green Day to play full 'American Idiot' on tour: 'What was going on in 2004 still resonates'

american idiot tour

Billie Joe Armstrong awakened to a slew of confusing texts on New Year’s Day.

The night before, the Green Day frontman played a benefit for Project Chimps , a sanctuary for former research chimpanzees he helped found, with The Coverups , his side project with Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt.

Armstrong wasn’t thinking about Green Day’s taped performance of “American Idiot” that aired on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” during which he changed the lyric “"I'm not a part of a redneck agenda" to "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda,” a substitute he had been making in the song in concert for several years.

But the tweak apparently resounded on the larger platform, sparking ire or cheers depending on political leanings.

“I was so surprised,” Armstrong says. “When I woke up to texts from people like my brother saying, ‘That was so (expletive) cool what you said onstage,’ and I was like, what? Chimpanzees? Then all of a sudden it’s Fox News and Elon Musk and Tom Morello . I was like, ‘Ohhhhh, I said that.’ It just shows you how easily triggered people are and the power of music and how it can get people talking. It’s not like I put out a tweet. I changed one word and it was all over the place. Job well done, I guess.”

Green Day will play 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot' albums in full every night on tour

While Green Day has never been as aggressively political as Rage Against the Machine or Black Flag, the trio of Armstrong, Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool has also never flinched in their lyrical depiction of an unsettled and divisive America.

On Friday, the band releases its 14 th studio album, “Saviors,” a collection of 15 brisk, pointed songs unfurled over 45 minutes. They’ll also hit the road May 30 in Europe before landing in the U.S. July 29 for a two-month stadium tour with the Smashing Pumpkins , Rancid and The Linda Lindas.

Along with the new music, the guys – all 51 – are also celebrating a couple of milestones: 30 years since the release of their major-label debut, “Dookie,” and 20 for “American Idiot,” their most socially incisive album , inspired by the George W. Bush presidency.

Green Day will perform both albums in their entirety during the The Saviors Tour, as well as a smattering of new material and plenty of vintage hits.

“I think (those albums) have aged great,” Armstrong says, seated between Dirnt and Cool during a video call. “When we first recorded ‘Dookie,’ we wanted to accomplish something we could play 20 years later. With ‘Idiot,’ it has a way, especially around election time, of always coming up. So I think of that record as topical when what was going on in 2004 still resonates today.”

For “Saviors,” named for a song on the album that is about “feeling desperate for answers and leadership and getting out of the mess we’re in,” says Armstrong, Green Day reunited with longtime producer Rob Cavallo.

The architect behind some of the band’s most consequential albums – “Insomniac” and “Nimrod” as well as “Dookie” and “American Idiot” – hadn’t worked with Green Day since their moderately received 2012 trilogy, “Uno!,” “Dos!” “Tres!”

As expected, their 30 years of shared history benefited the band in the studio.

“Rob has that energy that translates to us,” Cool says. “If we get confident, maybe we’ll try stuff and he’ll help us walk away from it when it’s right.”

Adds Dirnt: “He’s fiercely energetic and competitive. We’ve made some amazing rock records together, and it’s a hell of a drug when you get it right.”

Green Day holds up a mirror to America: 'This is our society'

Many of the songs on “Saviors” touch on the malaise infecting the country.

“The American Dream is Killing Me” talks about “my country under siege” and “Living in the ‘20s” opens with “another shooting in a supermarket,” both indicative of the “observing and reporting” approach the band took with the album.

“With ‘another shooting in a supermarket,’ people keep saying we can’t make this normal. And guess what? It is normal. This is our society, and unless there is some change, it’s going to be here forever,” Armstrong says.

He also points to the lyric “ ever since Bowie died, it hasn’t been the same” in the typically pungent rocker “Strange Days Are Here to Stay” as both prescient and a reminiscence.

“Me and my friends have said that when (David) Bowie died in 2016, it was the beginning of the weirdness,” Armstrong says. “We’re dealing and living in our own hypocrisy, whether it’s personal or political.”

Green Day pays tribute to their sons

Amid the punchy guitars and taut, metronomic drums, Green Day pauses – as they have in the past with “Wake Me Up When September Ends ” and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life”) – for lyrical reflection couched in acoustic guitars and strings with “Father to a Son.”

All three members have sons, but the genesis of the ballad emanates from Armstrong, who dedicates the song to sons Joey, 28, and Jakob, 25.

“Becoming a father, I was so young and it was on-the-job training for sure. As all parents do, you make mistakes and try to be honest with yourself – 'Is this right, and am I doing a good job?'” Armstrong says. “Sometimes you’re not. And sometimes you say the right piece of wisdom that actually works.”

Green Day to Play ‘Dookie’ and ‘American Idiot’ Every Night on Summer Stadium Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Green Day will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Dookie and the 20th anniversary of American Idiot by playing both landmark albums in their entirety on their summer stadium tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and the Linda Lindas.

“What a fuckin’ moment it’s going to be,” Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt tells Rolling Stone . “We’ve never done anything like this before. And there’s a really good chance we’ll never do it again.”

Dirnt estimates it’ll take about 90 minutes to play both albums. “We’ll then have about 35 to 45 minutes to throw down on other stuff,” he says. “And production-wise, doing these albums lends itself to some amazing possibilities.” (Green Day played Dookie straight through at England’s Reading Festival in 2013, and again last October at Full Fremont Country Club in Las Vegas. It took them a little over 40 minutes both times. American Idiot clocks in at nearly an hour on record, though.)

Billie Eilish Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

Team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, taylor swift and jack antonoff have reached their limit, kanye west announces 'yeezy porn' amid reports of adult film company.

Dirnt is also looking forward to the chance to reconnect with the Smashing Pumpkins this summer. “I look back at some of their songs with nostalgia,” he says. “When we first got big [in 1994], we joined Lollapalooza. They were headlining. And for both of us to still be around, and still be vital, is huge.”

The tour kicks off June 29 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. It wraps up Sept. 28 at Petco Park in San Diego. Prior to that, Green Day are playing a mix of festival and headlining gigs in Europe. They’re also playing a special SiriusXM show at New York’s Irving Plaza on Thursday night, just hours before dropping Saviors.

It turns out to offer the kind of sensual lushness that a lot more traditional musicals would kill to emulate." The Chicago Tribune Chris Jones

The trio played both albums, as they are set to do on their forthcoming stadium tour, at the Echoplex in LA on Thursday (April 18). Their mammoth 35-song set also included songs from their recent album , which came out in January, as well as a surprise encore of ‘Minority’ and new cut ‘Fancy Sauce’ which wasn’t listed on the printed setlist.

Green Day played ‘Dookie’ from top to bottom first, followed by five songs from ‘Saviors’ – ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’, ‘Bobby Sox’, ‘Look Ma, No Brains!” ‘Dilemma’ and ‘Saviors’. They followed this with an airing of ‘American Idiot’ in full.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Green Day performed ‘Basket Case’ with its original demo lyrics –  upon receiving an award from Avril Lavigne . They surprised the audience by singing the lines: “ They said this has been emotionless flight / Around each other intoxicating their minds / Dancing in the street under suburban lights / They stumbled to the ground without a hurt .” Previously, Armstrong admitted he rewrote these lyrics,  calling them “embarrassingly bad” .

ABOUT GREEN DAY

Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, CA, Green Day is one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide and 10 billion cumulative audio/visual streams. The five-time Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees released their breakout album Dookie in 1994 , which sold over 10 million and achieved 10x Platinum Diamond status, is widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock, catapulting a career-long run of #1 hit singles. Entertainment Weekly calls Green Day, “The most influential band of their generation,” while Rolling Stone attests, “Green Day have inspired more young bands to start than any act this side of Kiss, and that doesn’t seem to be changing.” In 2004, Green Day released the rock opera American Idiot which captured the nation’s attention, selling more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone and taking home the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Mojo declared “It’s exhilarating stuff, the kind of record that sets new parameters as to what is possible from a punk rock’n’roll band in the 21st century.” In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway to critical and commercial acclaim.  Released in 2020, Green Day’s thirteenth studio album Father Of All… debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Album Sales Chart and #1 in both the U.K. and Australia. Pitchfork declared, “Green Day’s most fetching and youthful songs in ages. The trio sounds reinvigorated, more like hungry newcomers staking their claim.” In July 2021, Green Day embarked on The Hella Mega Tour (w/ Fall Out Boy & Weezer). The global tour included 29 sold-out stadium gigs – including renowned venues like London Stadium and Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium.  On October 24, the band announced the release  of their highly anticipated 14th studio album, Saviors, coming January 19, ‘24 and released their brand new single, “The American Dream Is Killing Me.”

American Idiot

July 27, 2023 - August 20, 2023

The two-time Tony Award-winning hit musical Green Day’s American Idiot, based on the Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album, boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before.

Johnny, Tunny, and Will struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged and each must battle with their own demons. An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot, features little dialogue, instead, it relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the storytelling. It grabs you from start to finish in every possible way.

CONTENT WARNING: Strobe lighting effects are used during this performance. Mature audiences only. Contains adult content, sexual themes, strong language, and simulated use of drugs. It is recommended for audience members ages 16 and up. Mature teens are welcome, but parental discretion is advised due to profanity, and the handling of adult themes such as sex and drinking.
