The trek through Andharban is one of the most refreshing treks in the Sahyadri region. The name ‘Andharban’ is a compound word, coming from  Andhar , meaning ‘dark’, and  ban , which means ‘forest’. Literally the ‘dark forest’, Andharban is a trail through dense overgrowth, with beautiful views of the Devkund waterfall, Plus Valley and the Tamhini Ghat along the way. Scattered throughout with numerous small streams and waterfalls, it is a descending trek – it begins at an elevation of approximately 2,160 feet in the Sahyadri mountains and descends down into the valley, to reach the backwaters of the Bhira Dam.

 Short Itinerary

  • Andharban is an unusually trek in Maharashtra, where the trail is descending throughout
  • Trek through a deep forest that becomes almost dark when it’s blanketed under fog
  • Get fantastic view of the Bhira Dam and Plus valley through clearings on the trek

Trek Details

  • Altitude:  2,160 ft
  • Time taken:  4-5 hours, 13 km
  • Trek gradient:  Easy-moderate. Mostly descending trails with a few flat walks.
  • Water sources:  None. Carry at least 3 liters of water.

Andharban is open all day. People sometimes treat this as a night trek as well, the only extra precaution being that they need to carry torches and be extra careful on the trail. However, for someone going for the first time, it is always recommended that they trek during the day, as it is easier to lose your way after nightfall, and one small wrong turn could mean that you wander into the Kundalika Valley. It is best to depart for Andharban early in the morning, timing the journey to reach the start point by 9 a.m.

The start point of the trek is about 200 meters away from Pimpri village, at a location called Independence Point near the Pimpri Dam. There is no specific marking for the start point, but the trail is visible. You can ask nearby villagers for directions if needed. A path winds through a broken chain-link fence. Here, trekkers need to pay a fee of Rs. 50 per person before embarking on the trek. There is no permanent counter as such, just a temporary shelter, but the fee is legitimate, and trekkers get a formal receipt acknowledging the charge paid.

The trail essentially maps a shallow U-shaped turn around the backwaters of the Bhira Dam in the Kundalika Valley. Despite being a continuous drop, the extreme humidity and slippery route make it slightly tough. It takes around 4-5 hours to cover the 13-kilometer trail.

The trail runs completely through a dense jungle and is far from any human habitation. Make sure you carry light snacks and enough water to last (at least 3 liters), as there are no sources of drinkable water along the route.

Being a jungle trek, Andharban offers views of flora and fauna, with several species of birds to be seen, such as the  chaatak , the Malabar whistling thrush, dwarf kingfishers, and minivets, among several others. The Indian Giant Squirrel has been seen around the area, although sightings are rare.

The path continues along the top of a wall abutting the Pimpri dam for about a hundred meters, after which it turns right and enters an open area. You’ll see paddy fields on both sides of it. This road continues for about 200 meters before reaching two tall bushes. Turn right here. This point is easily recognizable because of a visible, well-made route and a signboard marking the start of the trail a few meters ahead on the right.

This trail continues straight for a while, with the Kundalika valley on the left and the mountains to the right. This is not yet the start of Andharban. The undergrowth slowly begins to grow dense as we go in deeper, although it is still easy to navigate. Through the course of the trek, we encounter three major streams of rivers, the first of which is reached at the end of this path after about an hour’s walking. This can sometimes be turbulent during the monsoons, and you might need ropes to cross it with.

The trail picks up on the opposite bank and continues for almost 1.5 km of a flat walk through a winding route before reaching another rivulet, after a sharp U-bend. This rivulet too tends to overflow. However, a cable has been provided at the crossing. After a slight ascent up into the hills (about 10 ft of climb), the trail winds into a dark forest, and it is here that Andharban truly begins.

Although the forest can get quite dark, especially due to the presence of fog during the rains, the trail throughout is very clearly visible, with little chance of going awry. Trekkers should watch out for leeches. We suggest you wear full-sleeved or full-length clothes. There are markers set by previous travelers to mark paths to avoid. In several places, fallen tree logs have been placed horizontally across trails that need to be avoided.

The walk through the dense forest is one of a very gradual descent. It continues for almost three kilometers before climbing a small hill. Here, it opens into a wide, open plateau-like space. Plus Valley to the left provides a wonderful view. This is a good place to set up a temporary camp and have lunch. Alternatively, one could walk 5 more minutes to get to Hirdi, a small village nearby. Hirdi does not have too many options for dining, although bathroom facilities can be availed of here.

From Hirdi, the road turns right and leads downward into the valley. A gradual descent begins here. The easiest way to spot the route is that several slippery round stones are marking the trail. This descent continues for almost 2 km. The trail then opens into a wide plateau (people camp here for the night, sometimes, but it is preferable to walk ahead for better views and to keep a distance from the village).

From this point onwards, the road is again mostly flat, except now the backwaters of Bhira Dam can be seen to the left or front. This patch of the trail, although easy, is long. It ends at a wide river flowing across the trail. This river, although broad, is shallow and easy to cross even during the rainy season.

Past the river, the road continues straight onward, and, slowly, small huts and shops can be seen on the left side of the road. Walking straight on, the trail reaches Patnus village, and, ahead of it, Bhira village. Patnus has several lodges for staying overnight and/or changing into fresh clothes, as well as options for lunch (one small dhaba owned by ‘Kulkarni Kaka’ is recommended). The village is the end point for the trek, and also where the trekkers should ideally ask their vehicles to arrive for pickup.

Trekkers are recommended to begin the journey by 9 a.m. at the latest, reach Patnus by 3/4 p.m., and then drive back to Lonavala before nightfall. If you choose to stay overnight at Patnus, there are several lodges and rooms (costing Rs. 500 per person on average, including food), and even a few camping sites.

Andharban is open all year round, but the best time to visit would be during the monsoon and the post-monsoon period when dense fog settles down in the forest and everything is fresh and green. Although purely a descending trek throughout, Andharban manages to elevate the senses to a completely new level.

➤ How to Reach the Base of Andharban Trek

The Andharban trek begins at Pimpri village, near Tamhini Ghat. This is situated 50 kilometers south of Lonavala. It can be reached either by a private vehicle or by public transport. State Transport buses run from Lonavala to Bhamburde village (around 35 km away), from where one can walk down to Pimpri village, 14 km away, or hire a vehicle for a one-way trip. Pimpri village can also be reached by a private vehicle by driving down from Lonavala towards Tamhini Ghat via the Lonavala-Aamby Valley road, which takes 1.5 hours on average, or by taking a shared rickshaw (unreliable).

It is preferable to go to Andharban in a private vehicle with a hired driver (which costs around 1500–2000 rupees per vehicle if you can haggle), as trekkers usually leave the vehicle and follow the trail into the valley while the driver takes the vehicle down to the dam to pick them up at the end of the walk. Rarely, trekkers may camp at the base near Bhira Dam and walk back up the same way the next morning. One could, in theory, drive down to Pimpri, park the vehicle at the start point, and come back up to the start, hailing a cab from Bhira or Patnus village. There are, however, no reliable public transport services when coming back from Bhira unless you manage to avail of a lift. I’d say the best option for travel would be to hire a cab for the day from Mumbai or Pune itself, which amounts to 2300–3000 rupees at the maximum for a four-seater.

  • Monsoon Treks in Maharashtra
  • Andharban, as the name suggests simply means a ‘Dark Dense Forest’. During monsoons, this trek is one of the most refreshing treks of the Sahyadri. It is the most beautiful attraction of the Sahyadri range which connects the Tamhini Ghat to the famous Konkan region.
  • Located in the Pimpri region of Maharashtra, approximately 16 km from the well-known city of Pune, Andharban Trek is the perfect place for every trekker who wishes to experience the pleasure of wandering deep jungles with enthralling views. Imagine walking through the nature trails deep into the jungle surrounded by sounds of the rustling of leaves, chirping of birds, buzzing of insects, and gushing waterfalls bubbling over the rocks. Blissful, isn’t it? Andharban – The Dark Forest Trek offers this all!
  • Since the Andharban trek is ideally taken during the monsoon season, you will be walking through the lush green grass and densely shaded cover of the forest. While walking through this jungle covered in fog, you will witness amazing views of the Kundalika Valley, hear mesmerizing small and big streams of water and gushing waterfalls, cross these big water streams with the valley on one side, and view the waterfall on the other with this mysterious forest waiting to amaze you with surprises at every turn! Known as a backpacker’s paradise, you will find yourself walking on a ridge with an awesome view of the Kundalika Valley, Bhira dam, and the various mountain ranges of Tamhini Ghat. Apart from stunning views of the valley, you will also encounter several unique flora and fauna, several species of birds such as the Jacobin cuckoo, the Malabar whistling thrush, dwarf kingfishers, and minivets indigenous to this place.
  • One can truly call it the heaven of the Sahyadri. It is a beautiful experience to embark upon an exhilarating Monsoon Trek to the Andharban forest and is a must-visit destination for all nature lovers. Trekking here during monsoons is all about hiking across delightful green hills, soaking in gorgeous waterfalls, and witnessing the massive fur of clouds right beside you!
  • The most interesting thing about the Andharban trek is that unlike most other treks in Sahyadris with painful ascents till your breath gives up, it is a gradual descent trek. The trek begins at an elevation of about 2100 feet and you will be descending the valley to reach Bhira dam with no difficult rocky patches coming your way.
  • It is quite bright when you start trekking. But as you descend further, soon you will find yourself walking in the shade of evergreen trees covering the trails and it starts getting dimmer. You will be walking in this dense dark forest for the first 6-7 km. This trail continues straight where you will be walking on the edges just beside Kundalika Valley and with the mountain ranges to your right. There are 3 major river streams that you will encounter throughout your entire course of the trek, some of which might require a rope or human chain if the flow is heavy due to rain.
  • You will then reach a remote yet beautiful village named ‘Hirdi’. It is the only village that you will come across throughout your Andharban trek and you can arrange for food from locals here. You can stop for a refreshment break/lunch here before starting to descend towards the Konkan route to reach Bhira. This is the valley that is the origin of the Kundalika River, famous for its white-water river rafting and other adventure activities. The second half of the trek is roughly 4-5 km and you will reach the base village in no time while trekking on a flatter surface and enjoying scenic views of the backwaters of Bhira dam.
  • This trek is truly an experience of a lifetime!

Best time to visit Andharban:

  • Andharban Trek is open all year round. However, monsoons are the best time to trek in these beautiful western Ghats when completely barren mountains turn into lush green lands. Consider planning this trek in the months of June-September when everything is so vibrant, fresh, and green. Trekking during post-monsoons is also a great idea as the Andharban forest remains dense, with added winter chills and mystical air.

Trek Details:

  • Trek Location : Pimpri, Tamhini Ghat, Maharashtra
  • Trek Difficulty Level : It is a moderate-level trek and requires good endurance. Having a prior trekking experience makes it easier. The only risky part of this trek is crossing water streams during monsoons as the river becomes turbulent.
  • Trek Distance : 13 km trail

  • Trek Type : Jungle / Valley Descend Trek
  • Trek Duration : It roughly takes 6-7 hours to complete this trek, which includes a lunch break at Hirdi village

As dawn breaks, a convoy of eager trekkers sets foot on the trailhead, brimming with anticipation for the adventure that lies ahead. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the symphony of chirping birds, setting the stage for what promises to be a trek like no other.

The trail begins gently, a deceptive preamble to the challenges that await in the heart of Andharban. The importance of comfortable footwear becomes evident from the first step.

Whether you prefer sturdy shoes that grip the terrain, reliable sandals for a lighter feel, or the casual comfort of flip-flops for the initial village trails, your choice sets the tone for the journey ahead.

The Andharban trek demands a dance with diverse terrains, and your shoes , sandals , or flip-flops become your trusted companions as you traverse through quaint villages and venture deeper into the forest.

Dancing Shadows and Whispers of the Wind:

As the trekkers delve deeper into the forest, the trees start to embrace each other, forming a dense canopy that filters sunlight into ethereal beams. It's as if the forest itself is playing a game of hide and seek, inviting trekkers to decipher its intricate patterns.

Always make sure your essentials are well-packed in rucksacks or duffle bags becomes crucial as the trail unfolds. These reliable companions carry not just your belongings but also the anticipation of the mysteries that lie ahead.

The play of shadows creates an ever-shifting mosaic on the forest floor, a dance of light and darkness that adds an enchanting dimension to the journey. Every step feels like a leap into a realm where time itself is measured in the rustling of leaves and the echoes of distant animal calls.

The Enigma of Andharban's Flora and Fauna:

The Surreal Veil of Mist:

As the trek progresses, Andharban has one final surprise up its sleeve - the mystical embrace of mist. The forest, already enigmatic, transforms into an otherworldly realm as mist drifts between the trees, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy.

Pack a change of clothes in your bags becomes essential as the mist adds an element of suspense, veiling the path ahead and heightening the sense of adventure. Each step becomes a leap of faith, a surrender to the unknown, as the trekkers navigate through the ethereal landscape.

Trekking in the shayadris.

The Shayadris offer a vast range of trails among which the landscape between Pune & Mumbai stands out as one of the most popular hiking & trekking destinations. From famous forts to monsoon trails to outdoor rock climbing, the Western Ghats have a place to fulfil anyone’s adventure quotient. These Ghats also help make a great training program for those aspiring for high-altitude treks & climbs. However, our today’s focus is going to be on a famous beautiful monsoon trek near Pune, the Andharban Trek.

Overview –

The Andharban trek is situated over a plateau overlooking a large valley called Kundalika valley, made of interesting rocky formations. The view of Kundalika Valley reminds me of the Grand Canyon whenever I go there. Being in the wild does not mean you’re in for a rough adventure and interesting enough the Andharban trek makes a soothing trail as most of the route is through the Andharban forest with little peaks into the valley below, thus making it a beautiful sight for photographers and trekking enthusiasts alike. The rainy season is well known for getting to the Andharban Jungle as the hills beside offer you a lush green view of the forests and valleys. Monsoon or Post Monsoon season is best time to visit Andharban Trek as you get to see so many waterfalls and streams along the trail and may even find some natural ponds.

The trail is a simple dirt track that takes you into the forest and sometimes brings you to vast grass fields. Being famous in monsoons the Andharban offers a view of continuous waterfalls and rivulets that fall along the path of your trek. One is also gifted with a plunge pool at the base of some waterfalls, a place loved by the Aquaphile. A dip on the return is a truly satisfying experience, giving one a chance to experience nature at its best.

Click on the link for some quick facts about the trek.

Location of the trek –

The Andharban trek starting point is around 70 kilometres from Pune central and 130 kilometres from the city of Mumbai. Andharban Forest is located at the start of the Konkan range. The road trip on the way to the Andharban trek lies in the valleys of the Mulshi taluka and offers a beautiful sight leading to a gateway to the Konkan region. You will also be driving alongside on blue waters of Mulshi Lake, a mesmerizing sight that is less fetched so close to a busy city such as Pune. The trek starts from Independence Point near Pimpari Village and ends near the backwaters of Bhira Dam. It is suggested to leave early in the morning as the entire drive from Pune to the Andharban Trek start point would take anything between 2-3 hours as a one-way journey and returning before the night sets in, is always an advantage. It is also advised not to go for your first trek without any guide or group, chances of getting lost in the forest do stand out, especially on the way back towards the starting point.

andharban trek start and end point

Duration of the trek –

The entire duration of the trek is 5-6 hours on average along with quick breaks, however being with an enthusiastic group makes hours feel like minutes, thus making the trek much easier than thought or if done all alone.

Fitness level required –

A basic level of fitness is sufficient, as it is a simple walk through the forest, however, it requires some stamina as one would need to walk for a minimum of 5 hours in total. Climbing up the stairs of a tall building is a very simple way to build your stamina and the best part is that it can be practiced at your home as well. The Andharban Trek is also well encouraged for beginners who want to get started with hiking or trekking. It is also advised to keep sipping water, to refrain from severe dehydration and fatigue.

2 different ways to do the Andharban Trek –

The entire route of the Andharban trek includes starting the trail at a village named Pimpari and ending at the backwaters of the Bhira Dam. This trek starts with a forest and opens up onto a large grass field, halfway through the trek. After which, you pass through a village and descend down the hill thus leading to the finishing point near the dam.

Alternative option to do this trek is by making it a loop track. One can start at the same base village Pimapri and returning from the halfway near the vast grass fields. This change in landscape is witnessed as one completes walking through the forest. This place also makes a good lunch break after which one can head back to the start point. Taking a return journey on the same route saves a hiker from having to arrange separate transport at both the start and end points. It also reduces some of the return travel time.

Things to carry during the trek –

  • 20-30 litre backpack – the bag should be comfortable in order to walk for long durations. Also make sure to have a rain-cover for the bag or waterproof your belongings with plastic bags.
  • 2-3 litre of water – keep yourself hydrated as it’s a long trek.
  • Energy bars or trail snacks – to keep the energy levels high during this long trek.
  • Rainwear – complete rain gear is a must as the trek is most suggested for the rains.
  • Swimming trunk & towel
  • Trekking or hiking shoes. (preferably waterproof for the rain)
  • Mosquito repellent – is a must to keep away from flying insects.
  • Ensure to not wear any kind of shorts as it is a jungle after all and little insects can be anywhere.

The Andharban Trek is an entirely different trek to explore in terms of terrain and views. It had personally taken a top place on my bucket list as it offers a beautiful hike through a dense forest trail, unlike many around the city. Another plus point was that the Andharban Trek meets all the criteria like being close to Pune, a trek that can be completed home to home between 6:00 am – 6:00 pm, and at the same time, it has beautiful forest-like views & the flora around is a treat to the eyes! If you are looking for an easy to moderate-level trek, close to the city, which can be completed in a day’s time, The Andharban is your answer! A getaway that will give you a much-needed break from your chaotic life and schedule!

Considering all the reasons above I have been to the Andharban Trek three times and I’m definitely looking forward to another chance.

Andharban Forest Trek Reviews

Chandan gill.

The trekking trail was beautiful with mesmerizing views and lush green forest. A must experience to do in the monsoon season.

Great experience and awesome scenery at the plateau. Even the dinner hosted by the local family was amazing.

For a long time, I was planning to go for a trek but could not find the time. this independence day I just booked a trek to andharban trough this app. the place is wonderful I would say this is the best trek if you are a beginner. Going through the dense forest through Giant waterfalls and breathtaking scenery.

This was my first trek in Andharban Forest Trek. The trek matched the itinerary as mentioned above, except that our return was delayed by an hour. The trek crew was knowledgeable and helpful. They knew the area well and came in well-prepared. The food and snacks provided were good. Overall, the experience was amazing and I will go again.

I am really thankful to My friend for his suggestion as this trek was by far the most adventurous and fun trekking. I am not much of a trekking guy but this trek has definitely made me one now. We were picked up from the mentioned location and it was on time. We were 6 people who went on this trek. The beauty of this place just can’t be described in a few words. We also made some new friends on this trek. Andharban can be best described as a heaven on earth

Most of the parts were dense jungle throughout our trek.

I was looking for an adventurous trip this time when I visited Pune. My friend suggested this amazing trek in Pune and I should say it was an amazing one. Everything was very well arranged. As the pickup was from Dadar so we didn’t have much difficulty. Our trek was through the green jungle and was quite a refreshing one.

It was a great trek, loved it. A must-visit place for trekkers who are looking for some adventure. Our pick-up was on time and so was our day. We trek through the verdant green forest and the quaint zig-zag roads. The best part was the sky that was just giving us the best view together with the scenery. Breakfast and snacks were good. Nice one!

This place is located in Tamhini ghat which is about 4 hours from Mumbai and 2 -3 hours from Pune. It is an awesome and must-do trek during monsoon as it offers some beautiful views of lush green forests and white-gushing waterfalls. It's a 13km trek and takes about 6- 7 hours. Please do this trek with an experienced group of trekkers.

Located within this is a nature trail around 15 km long called the Andharban Trek. It means 'dark forest loosely translated. It's a good trek with a bunch of friends but not advisable in a group of 3 or fewer as it is right in the middle of the wilderness and help may be miles away in case of a mishap.

Andharban jungle and Devkund Waterfall Trek – Time to get lost in the dense forest

valley crossing Andharban Jungle trek

Lost in the Andharban jungle!! Tumbled down some eight-ten feet!! Ripped my clothes. Felt the hunger!! Lost the Devkund waterfall trail!! Camped near a lake!! Trekked 40 kms !! Yes, it all happened in a day.

One fine day, I found myself into the Andharban jungles carving my way through the dense and dark, suffocating undergrowth, battling through the very air, which hung heavy, moist and still. The sounds of the insects, the birds, and the waterfall created a symphony of nature calling me deeper into the jungle.

jungles of Andharban

Dense Andharban Jungle

Andharban jungle means the trek through the dense and dark, to see mountains and jungles, that at a few places the sun-rays don’t reach to the ground at early afternoon too and one may not find any route out of it if lost. This trek is surrounded by Mountain ranges of Tamhini Ghat , Kundalika Valley , and Bhira (Unnayi) Reservoir, which offers endless trudge through the thicket forest.

And, to add more to the excitement, at the end point of Andharban jungle trek (Bhira Dam), another trek starts for the Devkund Waterfalls . The trek is again through the thick overwhelming forest and leads you to a standout among the most wonderful waterfalls you would ever envision.

How to reach Andharban Jungle Trail start point

The start point is situated near the Mulshi dam on the Tamhini Ghat road. Mulshi Dam is around 130 kms from Mumbai and 50 kms from Pune . Take a bus which is plying on the Tamhini Ghat road route and get down at the start of MCKS Ashram Road. From here, the start point is just 3 kms away. I would suggest you to put the location as Andharban Homestay on  Gmaps  and you can navigate appropriately.

How to reach Andharban Jungle and Devkund Waterfall from Pune Mumbai

Andharban Trek route details

Just ask for the Pimpri Village or put in Andharban Homestay on Gmaps which is around 2.7 kms from GMCKS Arhatic Yoga Ashram . The trail begins from Pimpri village. Just keep a watch on the electric pole which is located at a distance as one needs to move in the pole direction.

After few minutes of trekking, you will cross the valley as the Andharban jungle is located on the opposite side of the start point. Arrows are marked all along the way so make sure you follow them. If you don’t see arrows for a longer time, make sure you come back to the previous arrow. Also, ribbons are tied on the trees to further assist you.

Permits required for Andharban jungle trek

As per the latest news, permit is required to enter the Andharban jungle trek. The same can be obtained online by registering at Tamhini Wildlife sanctuary website by paying a fees of INR 150 per person. Only 500 people are allowed per day, so make sure you book well in advance.

My journey to Andharban Jungle and Devkund Waterfall

I began from Pune around 3:00 am and with the assistance of Gmaps, I reached the start point around 4:30 am. It was dead silence there and because of amazingly foggy conditions in the range, the visibility was extremely low. I set up my tent close to the little Pimpri dam and snoozed till the dawn.

The tent that I carry during the treks is Quechua Arpenaz 2 Tent . It has enough space for 2 people.

andharban trek start and end point

I began the trek around 7 am. The ground was smooth under my shoes, the leaves were brushed up against my feet, the light of the sun filtered by the tree foliage on each side of the trail.

Andharban Jungle Trek start point area

The whole 12 km trek(one-way) goes through thick wildernesses of Andharban. The heat and humidity pressed in on the skin making me sweat pointless, on the other side the air tasted both sweet and fresh, like flowers blooming on my tongue.

Andharban Jungle trek Start Point

Camped just at the start point of Andharban jungle Trail

The sweet jungle fragrance was almost cloying. Every view was unique but the same all at once. Yes, this is the Andharban jungle irresistible beauty which can make you pen down your Shayari about the dreamy journey into it.

Andharban Jungle trek forest

There was nobody on the whole trek. Yes, nobody. The trail was confusing because of recently developed bushes in the rainstorm season. I lost the trail couple of times however, I knew the end point (Bhira Dam), thanks to the technology( GPS ). In the wake of trekking nearly for 3 hours, I made it to the Bhira dam.

village on Andharban Jungle trek

Village on Andharban Jungle Trek

Devkund Waterfall trek

The trek is 7 kms long (one way). Try not to pass by the markings on the google maps, they are deceiving. Because of a couple of accidents in most recent few months, now it is mandatory to take a guide. The same can be hired from the start point parking area and charges are 100 INR per person. I didn’t know about it before the trek and somehow they didn’t see me entering the trekking range.

Note : If you not doing Andharban and want to reach the start point of Devkund Waterfall trek, just search Bhira, Patnus on Gmaps . Ask any of the local for the parking from where the trek starts. You will have to compulsorily take a guide over there.

Bhira dam Andharban Jungle trek end point

Bhira Dam near Devkund Waterfall

Because of the incidents, the trek was shut for 3 months and because of this the trail nearly vanished attributable to the growth of new bushes in the monsoon. I lost the right trail and found myself in a thick forest, unknowing of which way to go.

Devkund waterfall trail

I could hear a river flowing close-by, and as I had constantly heard that on the off chance that you are lost in jungles, search for waterways. After a considerable measure of look for the way to get down to the river, I figured out one which seemed minimal troublesome. As I put my initial step to get down, the other second I found myself around 10 feet down. My clothes were ripped!!

river on way to Devkund Waterfall

River on way to Devkund waterfall

I somehow figured out how to reach the river, and took a bath to rejuvenate myself. Fortunately, I found a fisherman over there and he guided me to the correct trail to Devkund Waterfall. There is no enormous climb all through the trek barring the last 20% which requires 300 feet approx. of gradual ascending to reach the waterfall. An incredible sight to behold would be the moment you reach the waterfalls!!!Just stunning.

Beautiful Devkund Waterfall

For the return, I took the same route (12+ 7 kms) and it took around 4 hours to reach the Andharban trail start point. You can likewise pick to camp at Bhira for a night, on the off chance that you are worn out to go the distance back.

Food options on the entire trek

There are no food options on the whole Andharban trek. Additionally, there are only a couple of eating out joints on the Devkund waterfall trek. So I would propose you to carry a couple of eatables alongside you.

Try not to miss this trek, in case you are nature sweetheart and want to explore it, and want to write something like I wrote this one – by imagining it then, this is yours…! This place is so alive it makes the city seem barren. In the jungle I was inconsequential, yet I felt like I belong. I may live in a tower of concrete but my heart will always live here.

Update : Pune forest department bans entry to Tamhini, Andharban, Sudhagarh

Forest department revokes entry ban at Andharban, Sudhagarh forests .  The forest department plans to develop an app for entry permission.  After crossing 200 entries, the app won’t accept further registration for that particular day .  The entry fee is yet to be decided.

Amazing job Abhishek. The information that you have provided is very crucial for DIY kind of folks.

I have read somewhere that now we need to take permission from forest department in advance via email and only 200 people a day are allowed. Do you know what is the email id or app if it exists?

If the permission is not required, can we just reach there directly and hire a guide directly from there (if yes from where)?

I just don’t want to be in situation where in the entry to trek is rejected.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Cheers!! Yogesh

Hey, Yogesh Thank you!! I haven’t been to Andharban since long. I have heard of the new rule but probably it hasn’t been implemented yet.

Very useful information and nicely presented blog. Awesome photographs also included. Thanks I am planning a trek to Andharban / Devkund this season. The info will surely helpful.

Can you provide contact number for some local guide, stay service available there.

Sorry I don’t have any contact numbers as of now…

Can we do andharban by bicycle? How is the road for MTB , steep climb, rocky patches etc

Most probably no!!

The guide will wait with us if we plan to take a break and put our tents down?

No he won’t…May be you can pay him bit extra for this.

Hey Abhishek, Wonderful blog and lovely pics. We are from Bangalore. Planning this trek in the first weekend of March. Is camping allowed and from where do we take permission from forest department? Thank you!

Hey hi Imran, thank you for the appreciation. Yes you can camp at the start point of Andharban trail( there is a small dam over there). As of now I guess no permission is needed.

Hi Abhishek Your doing nice job dude Your informations are very useful .I think this is best place for planning the trips Carry on brother

Thank you so much Avinash 🙂

It’s an average trek where you have to walk for 4.5 km. The site is scenic and trekking is not tiring since it’s a good scenic forest and lakes on the way. You have to pay Rs 50 for guide and currently locals are not allowing visitors without guides. You will be able to swim in waterfall however now rope has tied in waterfall where visitors are not allowed to cross this after recent accidents. Our visited information here: https://youtu.be/za3Nw0KjV9M

hay bro, we plan to go “Andharban jungle and Devkund Waterfall Trek, we are planned bike ride from Bangalore. in Andharban jungle is their any bike parking or safety places to park our bike

Hey Gururaj, that’s great to hear that you are planning a trip to Andharaban jungle trek and Devkund Waterfall. Yes, you can park your bike at the start point of Andharban trek just near to the dam. It’s absolutely safe over there. Happy traveling!!!

hi, any transport available from Lonavala railway station to pimpri village?

Hey Pratik, I am not sure about this. At Lonavala, you can ask for a transport for Tamhini. At a point from Tamhini, the trail is just 20-30 minutes(3 km)walk. Hope that helps. 🙂

Can I have GPS trail map of this trek buddy?

Sorry, I don’t have GPS trail map. What you can do is, once you reach Andharban Trail start point (search on Gmaps for the same), search for Bhira dam. You must trek keeping your GPS ON and just keep a watch on the blue dot on Gmaps, that you are approaching near to Bhira dam. I hope you got my point.

andharban trek start and end point

Andharban, literally translating to the Dark Forest, is a dense jungle situated in the Pimpri region of Maharashtra. It is located about an hour and a half’s distance from Lonavla and happens to be a popular trekking region in the southern part of India. The Andharban forest trek is ideally taken during the monsoons and the majority of the trek leads through the dense shaded cover of the forest. The most interesting part about the trail is that it is a descending trail all the way, so you will be going down rather than climbing up, as with most trails.

You will have the greenery of the dense Sahyadri forest for company and will encounter misty and dreamy forest landscapes in the Tamhini Ghats. There are plenty of ponds here as well as huge cascading waterfalls, which makes for a great backdrop for photography. The foliage is very thick here and you will be treading on soft grass or a forest floor covered with dense fallen leaves. You will also get to gaze at the stunning view of the adjoining Kundalika Valley and will encounter a number of unique flora and fauna as well, indigenous to this place. The best part is, that Andharban is also a very popular spot for night trekking, so if you want to up the adventure quotient, do try out trekking at night as well, although in the company of a professional guide.

The Andharban forest is located at an altitude of 2160 feet in Tamhini Ghats and the entire trek time is about 5 hours to cover 13 kilometers of the trail. It is a relatively ease trail so first time trekkers are also welcome.

As mentioned earlier, the Andharban jungle trek should ideally be undertaken during the monsoon months and so you will get to experience the full beauty of the lush green valley. Pre- monsoon and right after monsoon are the ideal time slots, which mean the months from June to September. On the other hand, this time of the year can also get a little humid and if you don’t want that, then you can visit between the winter months of October to February when there is a nip in the air and the morning mist makes for a dreamy landscape.

How to Reach

By Road: The trek will start from the Pimpri village in Maharashtra and the best way to access it is from Lonavla, from where the distance of the village is about 50 kilometers. You can take a cab or a bus to Lonavla and from there another cab or a bus to Pimpri. You can also hire a self- drive car if you are coming straight from Mumbai or Pune.

By Train: You can take a train from Mumbai or Pune to Lonavla and one of the best options is the Pune Intercity or the Deccan Express and the Udyan Express. If you are coming from north, you have to try the Hazrat Nizammuddin Express.

Flight: If you are coming from some other part of India, you have to take a flight to Mumbai or Pune and then take a cab from there to Pimpri.

About the Trek

Andharban Trek trail

The trek will start from Pimpri Village at a place near Pimpri Dam known as Independent Point. A local guide may be hired from here to guide you through the trail. Be sure to start early in the morning. The first part of the trek will be through dense tree and plenty of water streams and you will also get to enjoy the backwaters of Bira Dam. The trek will also take you through the top of a wall that joins the Pimpri Dam which will lead you to an open area and you will come across poppy fields ahead. From here, you will enjoy great views of the Kundalika Valley spread in front of you and now you will gradually start to enter the dark forest through a few winding routes. Take a break and rest your feet at the Bhirdi village for small refreshment and then the descent will commence towards the Konkan route.

For the major part of the trek you will have to skip waterfalls and make your way through the dark undergrowth. The forest is named so for a reason- you will find that the sunlight hardly penetrates the thick canopy above and the forest is literally quite dark even during daytime. The few patches of sunlight that you get through the trees in places makes the place even more mysterious if anything, and only accentuates the darkness beyond. However, it is also one of the most pleasant places to be in, as you will encounter birds chirping in the trees and if you are a tree lover, you will have fun identifying the myriad foliage found here.

Return Journey

Once you are past the Bhirdi Village, you will be walking more or less on flatter ground along the backwaters of Bira Dam. You will have to cross a river here, and you will reach Patnus village where there are a quite a few lodges and eateries. You can stay here for the night or start straight back for Pune, Mumbai or Lonavla. If you have hired a cab for the entire day, then ask the driver to pick you up from Bhira Dam End point.

  • The overnight stay at Patnus is quite affordable and a night will cost you between INR 500 to INR 1000.
  • The bus fare from Mumbai to Lonavla is around INR 500.
  • A self drive car from Pune to Pimpri will cost around INR 3000, including the return journey. From Lonavla to Pimpri, the cabs will cost around INR 2000 for one way.
  • Food is likely to be around INR 500, depending on where you eat.
  • INR 50 has to be paid near the entrance of the trek point
  • Andharban Trek Packages cost around INR 1500 onwards per person.

Places to Stay

There are plenty of options to stay at Patnus village or you may also opt to enjoy an overnight camping or lakeside camping by the Bhira Dam. You may also return to Lonavla where the charges start from around INR 1200 per night.

Food: Be sure to have a good breakfast before you start your trek. You can stop at Mulshi, to enjoy authentic Maharashtrian food and there are plenty of dhabas en route. You will also find many local eateries in Pimpri.

Places of Interest: There are a plenty of attractions which you will come across during the duration of your Andharban trekking.

  • Be sure to stop by at the Tamhini Waterfalls, the Plus Valley Trek, the Devkund Waterfall and the Hemant Waterfall. The view from Tamhini Ghat View Point and Tamhini Hill Top is also spectacular.
  • You can also go for rafting in the Kundalika River, which is another activity in itself and draws its own share of adventure enthusiasts.
  • Lavasa is only about 2 hour from Pimpri and there are quite a few high end resorts here. You can also try other activities here like ziplining, lakeshore kayaking and even jet skiing. The Temghar Dam is also a must visit.
  • You will come across multiple other places here like Sudhagad Lake, Takmak Point, Ekole Valley View, Shivling Point, Anghai Fort, Mongiri Fort, Thanale Caves, Sarasgad Fort and Tung Fort. There are also the Kune Falls, Bhorghat, and Bhushi Dam to see. It is advisable that once you have completed your trek, stay back for a day or two, or for a weekend and explore the area around. The region is very beautiful but also somewhat secluded and it will give you the perfect opportunity to unwind in the laps of nature, away from crowds.

Safety Tips

  • It is advisable to wear full sleeve clothes and carry an umbrella.
  • Also carry paper towels and small towels with you.
  • Pack light snacks like sandwiches, or carry energy bar as you might feel hungry before reaching Patnus.
  • Carry torch and Swiss army knife to cut through thick undergrowth.
  • Carry sprain reliever to avoid unexpected injuries.
  • Carry a light backpack and wear durable and high quality trekking boots, especially water proof ones as you would be waddling through streams and waterfalls.
  • Carry a power bank and plenty of water.
  • Carry mosquito repellant if you camp for the night.
  • Hire a private taxi for the day if you are relying on public transport.
  • Do not litter the place and do not play loud music or cause a ruckus which might hinder the routine of local people. Do not carry disposable plastic.
  • Make sure you are in good health before the trek and do not attempt it if you have high blood pressure or heart problems.
  • Tread carefully on steep rocks and boulders.

By keeping these points in mind and by enjoying the trek during the monsoons, you will have a most glorious trip which will be a thing to remember.
