  • K5071UNricharda 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable, excellent experience Transport to the border with Mr. Aum was smooth - Comms including photos of who we were looking to find etc. via WhatsApp was seamless. Border crossing meant being passed to someone to guide us where to go by foot but of course they couldn't come with us - we took the offer to not queue for the visa as it was clearly going to take a while and it was hot plus we had all our baggage etc., $7 well spent. We just waited in a side room with others whilst the guide took a different route (skipped the queue) and was back with us in minutes. Driver on Cambodia side was smooth and we met the guide for the tour (name sounds like "Long") at the (VERY nice) hotel. Guide was excellent, knowledgeable and flexible. Given a lot of detail about transport because you shouldn't be put off by other things you may have read. It's different to the way things might be at home, but nothing to complain about... Things ARE different. They should be. Otherwise why leave home?! Floating village tour was excellent. Again I'd read a lot about how exploitative it is but there was no evidence of that at all. There are no crocodiles in the lake, no mistreated bats or snakes in cages at the village, no girls sent out to the boat in a paddle washtub begging. No begging at all. There WERE crocodiles at the village in a pit - but in a kind of farm... They looked well, were well kept etc. they are used as WE might use farmed animals - but they obviously couldn't keep cows and sheep on a floating village! They are eaten, with skin used and products available to admire or buy. We asked to stay and watch the sunset and were allowed to do so. Excellent. Watching traditional net fishermen on the trip back was a bonus. The guide gave us a geography and history lesson explaining everything we saw. We were taken into Siem Reap, took the guide's advice on where and what to eat for traditional Cambodian fayre and walked a while before heading back to the hotel by tuk tuk (different to the Thai variant, this was an actual motorbike towing the carriage!). We asked if we could get to the temples early morning to watch the sunrise and again everything was flexible enough to allow that. We then took time to fully explore Angkor Wat with excellent guidance, a free photographer in the guide who knew all the best spots and the kindest group of resident temple guides to help us along the way before being taken back to the hotel for a great breakfast then returned again to the temples for Ta Prohm (tomb raider temple) and Bayon (faces everywhere!). All with the benefits already mentioned of our excellent guide and driver. Travel back was as before. Just go with it. Trust the people and jet then do their jobs - you'll have an unforgettable experience and hundreds of photographs! Read more Written March 18, 2024

  • subramaniank2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This is definitely a must-do trip for everyone! Mind-blowing! Angkor Wat is an absolute must-see-before-you-die location. The Angkor Wat Temple Complex is very well known, of course, and is the largest religious structure in the world. However, the descriptions do no justice to actually seeing Angkor Wat in person. Its grandeur and sheer expanse is breath-taking! Its history, architecture, scale and charm is second to none. The trip was very well organized by Viator who picked us up on time at our hotel, and after a roughly 3.5 hour troip to the Poi Pet border, we got through to the Cambodian side. (we had obtained eVisa's prior but I'm told you can get a Visa on the spot as well). Another 3 hour ride to Siem Ream - we were put up in a very nice 4-star hotel with attached restaurants and an excellent breakfast buffet. This is where we met out tour guide Soth Sothy. Soth ("Mr. T") proved to be a terrific guide, and was extremely knowledgable, and stayed with us for the rest of the trip. First evening was a tour of the floating village - which was very interesting. Day two was the star-studded day, with many hours at Angkor Wat. Do not miss the climb up to the top gallery and seeing both the view, as well as the 4 Buddha's facing each cardinal directions. The Hall of the 1000 Buddhas was quite remarkable, as the center stone in the hall is build to align perfectly with the magnetic north (easy to verify with the Compass App in an iPhone). All the way through we learnt a lot about the construction, timeline and history of strife for the site, as well as a wealth of information about the carvings and iconography in the temple. This was followed by a visit to the Angkor Thom Bayon Temple with the Lokeshvara Buddha towers- which is quite amazing as well, including the monkeys clambering the ruins. The last site was the famous Ta Prohm Temple, where Angelina Jolie shot scenes for "Tombraider" - quite amazing tos ee how the trees grew all around the temple ruins. The local restaurant scene is excellent - we ate at the Chanrey Tree restaurant for dinner Day 1 and loved the Haute Cambodian food, although street food is awesome as well - both in Cambodia and Thailand. Many places to shop for local artifacts - Cambodian Silk, Khmer sculptures - bronze and teak, as well as gemstones like sapphire and ruby. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. Only negatives I can think of are the heat, long ride and we wished we had more time as there is so much more to see and do. Next time: will do a longer trip to the region for sure. Guide, driver and associated staff were excellent as well. Strongly recommend the trip! Read more Written January 3, 2024
  • christinap543 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Dangerous Drivers and Long Wait We give this tour 2 stars as there were only two good aspects; our tour give for the temple visits and the driver in Cambodia. We were traveling as a group of 9. Picked up in Bangkok hotel and made one stop before arriving at the border. At the border meet by a APTT representative who told us we could stand in line for our Cambodian Visa or he could expedite it for us for an additional 7$ USD per passport to be paid to him. Total of 40$ (33Visa, 7 to him). We choose to expedite, but it standing in line on your own was much faster as we watched countless people get their visas while we waited 90 min. Total scam! Our tour guide and driver in Cambodia were great; only downside is they take you to extremally touristry, expensive and marginal food places to eat. Family of four cost $50 USD to eat a tasteless lunch, but the restaurants were safe and no one got sick. The hotel in Cambodia is very average and all food/beverages on the expensive side. On our return trip to Thailand we left the hotel at 8:30. Once we arrived at the border we were told it take 4 hrs to enter Thailand, we asked why so long and they said due to upcoming new years holiday, and we should have arrived earlier, yet no one told us that. Once in Thailand we wanted to get going back to Bangkok immediately, but our driver was not ready. He put us in the van and we proceeded to wait 30 min for him to go to the toilet, smoke, get tea and some type of leaf. Then we were on the road and 45 min in we were stopping, and noticed our driver was having a hard time staying awake. We stopped every 45 to 60 min for the driver to stretch, walk around and get some tea. We had to watch everything on the road and make loud noises to help keep him awake. Several times he braked very hard to keep from hitting vehicles in front of us. We asked to drive and he refused. It tooks us 4 hours on the outbound trip to get from Bangkok to Border, going back to Bangkok it took us 6.5 hours, with same type of traffic. I DO NOT recommend this company. • I3495LKjohnr 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles BKK to Angkor Wat Great trip from Bangkok to Angkor Wat. The summary written by the company on the web page is accurate. They will pick you up at your hotel in BKK at 6:30 am. Transport you in a nice van to the Thai-Cambodian Border. You will be escorted to the border and go through immigration and be met on the other side by another guide who will walk you to the van on the other side. From there it is a 2 hour ride to Siem Reap. We were dropped off at a nice hotel, allowed time to unpack and relax, and then we met our tour guide for a trip to the Floating Villages. Our guide, Long, was great. He was friendly, good English, knowledgeable about many facts, and just an overall nice guy. After watching the sunset on the lake we were given the option of exploring Pub Street in Siem Reap which we did. Long explained we could stay as long as we want and just flag down a Tuk Tuk and pay $2 for a ride back to the hotel. We walked around, did some window shopping, and had a nice dinner, and then a $2 Tuk Tuk ride back to the hotel. The next morning we had a good breakfast at the hotel, met Long at 8 am and went to Angkor Wat and several other temples. Long did a great job explaining things and answering our questions. We opted for a lunch in Siem Reap before we left and the van driver drove us to the border and we were escorted by a guide to immigration and then met by another guide on the Thai side to walk us back to the van meeting point and then driven back to BKK and dropped off at our hotel. A great 2 day and 1 night trip from BKK to Angkor Wat. Highly recommended. Read more Written December 13, 2023

My family and I were picked up at the hotel the driver couldn't speak English but he made his best to communicate using Google translator. He was very friendly and offered us to make stops whenever we needed. At the Cambodian border we were were straight away guided to the customs and the guide had our papers already filled out. After crossing the border we were picked up by our guide Mr, T. Mr Tea was a great help, very polite, respectful and provided us with very useful information. He was very kind and took very nice pictures of my family. I guess we were lucky to have the best guide from Cambodia. Read more Written October 18, 2023

  • David v 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The Guide Makes the Difference Getting to/from the border was ok. The driver will likely not speak much English and will quite literally drop you off at the border. Don’t worry, this isn’t part of the tour it’s just the transportation. We had someone that spoke Thai in our group so it wasn’t an issue but I’d be comfortable doing this on my own in the future. Where the magic happened was when we met our guide Yuth. It’s not a secret, you could easily do this itinerary on your own for much, much cheaper. However, Yuth made this worth every penny. We had our own personal guide for 2 days and he was willing to adjust and accommodate every request. One person in our group wanted a tea set. Yuth didn’t take us to some tourist trap. Instead he takes us to some small business far away from the tourist centers. We walk by a few kilns and obvious pottery equipment…Yuth took us to where local Cambodian tea sets are actually made!!! Tons of options, all beautiful and more importantly truly local made. I even grabbed some hand made teak chopsticks (made at a different village though). The tea set was amazing and not something made in China but sold in Cambodia. I always want the real local cuisine; after the pottery shopping I asked Yuth to take us to a place with only locals for real local food. Yuth didn’t disappoint, we were the only foreigners; no English menu; no western beverages (like soda)…he helped us order, explained what everything was and where it was from and how to eat it (see pics). Tasted amazing!!! Finally, and this is where I swear Yuth is a magician, when we visited the Angkor Wat complex, Yuth took us on a route that had us virtually alone right until the very end. We didn’t see more then 3-5 people until the last 30 minutes. Made for amazing photos and a much more peaceful visit. Again..see pics. Bottom line…if you do this tour, demand Yuth. He did so many little things I can’t list them all. He really did go out of his way to ensure we had the best experience possible. I’d love to spend a full week in Cambodia and if I do I will be hiring Yuth to be my personal guide. Will be worth every single penny. Read more Written May 7, 2023

We booked a 3-day, 2-night tour for three adults and two children and were very satisfied with our experience. Everything was well-organized and worked smoothly. The tour agency proved to be reliable, and the hotel provided clean rooms and a good breakfast buffet. Our guide, Mr. T, was exceptional. Read more Written 3 January 2024
Read more Written 13 December 2023

Read more Written 7 May 2023

Angkor and Koh Ker trip from Pattaya Thailand

Two-day journey from Pattaya to Cambodia is completely called: "The Great Angkor Wat and secrets of Koh Ker". This bus tour from Thailand to Angkor Temple Complex became available in 2018th. And it is designed as an alternative to the older, "classic" tours from Pattaya to Cambodia. It will be interesting to advanced travelers, those who have already been on excursion program to Cambodia, exciting the Small Circle of Angkor Temple Complex. As well as for those who would like a richer two-day excursion, without "traditional" Siem Riep sightseeing tour on the first day, Tonle Sap Lake cruise, etc.

This tour has two different price. The program of tours to Angkor Temples and to Koh Ker while no different. The difference is only in hotel level and food:

  • We purpose 3* and 4* hotels in Siem Riep. All hotels are equipped with a swimming pool, Rooms in 4* hotel will be more comfortable).
  • Meals in the "Economy" option with 3* are two lunches and breakfast, but there is no dinner and the Apsara national Cambodian show. These options can be purchased for extra (if it seems necessary). If you choose the option with 4*, then meals will be four times - two lunches, breakfast and dinner.
  • Since dinner is included in the version with 4* hotel, it means that along with this you will watch the Apsara national Khmer show. The rest of these varieties of this tour to Cambodia from Pattaya is absolutely the same. Temples are inspected by the same group with the same guides, transfers and border crossing are also the same group.

Cambodia Avatar - Description and Program. First day - Great Circle of Angkor

The tour Cambodia Avatar starts with Prasat Pre Khan. Pre Kan is a large 12th-century temple complex ruled by the great King of Angkor.

You will see a moat around the monastery, a bridge through which stone statues are guarded. Many heads are not preserved and they are regularly changed to new ones. In addition, at the location of the monastery everywhere there are lingams. Lingam is the reproductive organ of Shiva, as a symbol of fertility.

Pre Rup & Neak Pen

Temple Pre Rup X century. The name of the temple means "turning bodies", because earlier here were funeral rites on the terraces.

If you look closely, you can see that the towers and tiers have different colors. The creators of the temple located in the corners of the terrace figures of lions and elephants.

Neak Pen is the most unusual temple, it stands on an island in the center of the lake with dirty, muddy water, and once it was believed that the water of this sacred place is able to heal.

So that some tourists do not have the temptation to drink green water for medicinal purposes, the temple staff fenced the pond.

Krol Co, Ta Som & East Mebon

Krol Co. Near Neak Pine, to the left of the road is a small temple of Krol Ko, dedicated to the Buddha. Very little visited by tourists, surrounded by a dense wall of greenery, it is able to become necessary for recreation a short pause before a visit to Ta Som.

Ta Som - One of the hallmarks of this cult place is the presence of a large number of vegetation among the ruins.

East Mebon is a temple of the 10th century. It is located in the center of the dried up artificial pool "East bar". He was on a small island in the middle of a huge reservoir, which, unfortunately, became shallow. But despite this, the temple leaves a terrific impression.

Cambodia Avatar. Second day - Small Circle Angkor

Angkor Wat temple complex "Small Circle" includes the following attractions: temples of Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prom, Phnom Bakheng, Baphua, Ta Keo, Terrace leper King, terrace elephants.

Many believe that the Angkor Wat temple is the largest sacred building in the world and is a typical combination of elegance and harmony for Asian architecture.

The central temple of Bayon and its fifty-four huge towers, each decorated with the four faces of the Buddha. According to one version in the image of the Buddha was presented a portrait of the king himself. This temple was the last large religious building built in Angkor.

Finally, Ta Prohm is a temple in Angkor. The king of Angkor built him in the 12th century in honor of his mother, whom he identified with the mother of all deities and the goddess of "Perfect Wisdom."

Two day from Bangkok to Siem Reap and back. Thank you so much for the wonderful two day tour to Angkor Wat. Everything was well organized. Our tour guide, drivers, border crossing was well planned and efficient. We wish we had more time since it’s a long drive but our guide maximized the time we had there. Communication was easy. It was an unforgettable experience! Great Tour Company and Guide Kim was a great host and took care of us like we were family. Drivers were always on time. Thanks for the great memories and the smiles on our faces!!! An awesome tour guide and great photographer! Mr. Kim was an awesome guide! He was very thorough on explaining each site and the history of the Angkor empire. He was very patient being my guide and accommodating to all of my needs including helping me take photos. Angkor temples requires a lot of trekking and he made sure I was well hydrated! He knew all the ways to navigate to avoid the large crowds! Highly recommend this tour if you want hassle free guidance! Two-day, seamless whirlwind trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap and back The tour operator is too easy to work with in making reservations. Driver from Bangkok to border very cordial and good driver. Assistant at border crossing nice, helpful, and efficient. Tour guide Mr. Kim and his driver Mr. Khim were fantastic. Mr. Kim can give you as much information as you can absorb. He is proud of Khmer history and Cambodia's wonders. He will encourage you to stay more than a few days and is full of plans for how to get the most out of your visit to Cambodia. His sense of humor is fantastic. And photographer - WOW! I usually don't care about stuff like that, but Kim knows all the best places to take pictures and is pro with the iPhone. Unless you really know the area and have a specific plan to execute, just inform your operator in advance what you want to see/do and then let him make the plan. He recommended all kinds of restaurants, activities, etc. that we never would have thought of. E.g., we should have gone with hotel reservations at hotel the tour operator recommended rather than booking it separately, and talk to him about where to get a massage (not your hotel, necessarily). We wish that we had more time in Siem Reap with Mssrs. Kim and Khim! In Spanish Gran experiencia. Date of experience: August 2023 In English "Great experience. Recommended to everyone, I would repeat without hesitation." Great service from the whole team. From the beginning of the communication to dropping us back at the hotel on the last day. The entire tour is perfectly calculated and they do not neglect any detail. In addition, for people with little time, the tour is perfect, since it is designed to make the most of the time and get to know as much as possible. Special mention to the two Kims in Cambodia, whose treatment was exceptional, as well as their explanations and help. I would definitely do a tour with them again and recommend them to anyone going to Cambodia. Excellent tour of Angkor Wat Mr. Sophoan and his team helped make our 2D1N trip to Angkor Wat memorable. Mr. Sophoan is extremely responsive on email and whatsapp and helped put the plan together at very short notice. Everything, including pick up at our hotel, drive to the border, evisa and then drive on to Angkor and the trip back worked like clockwork. At Siem Reap, Mr Kim met us and guided us to various sights. he is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. he took some of the best pictures of our trip. I would recommend this tour to anyone considering going to see these magnificent temples. You wouldn't have to worry about anything if you choose to work with this team. Exploring The Temple Complex

Exploring the temple complex of Angkor Wat is a truly unforgettable experience, as it offers an unparalleled glimpse into the past. As you stroll through this  vast and intricate network of ancient buildings , it's easy to become entranced by the seemingly endless corridors adorned with  stunning bas-reliefs and impressive sculptures that reflect  Cambodia's rich history and artistry .

One can't help but feel a sense of wonder while traversing through iconic temples such as Ta Prohm, entangled in twisted roots, or marveling at Banteay Srei, showcasing delicate carvings on its red sandstone walls.

Venturing further off-the-beaten-path leads you to  hidden gems waiting to be discovered – offering intimate encounters with ancient ruins that evoke serenity amid Southeast Asia's lush landscapes.

Understanding The History And Significance

The history and significance of Angkor Wat is fascinating and complex, making it one of the most sought-after tourist locations in Southeast Asia.  Built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II , this religious monument served as a temple for Hinduism before transitioning to Buddhism at the end of the century.

Angkor Wat's importance lies beyond just being a beautiful structure; it represented authority, power, and wealth during Cambodia's  Khmer Empire era . The complex was not only considered a spiritual center but also functioned as an economic hub where leaders conducted important state affairs.

Today, it stands as a symbol of Cambodia's rich history that has profoundly influenced modern-day culture.

Whether you are visiting Angkor Wat for spiritual reasons or purely out of curiosity about ancient ruins' architectural marvels - there isn't anything else quite like it elsewhere globally! So why wait? Start planning your trip today with Tourvado - we'll make sure you have a memorable experience!

Architecture And Design Elements

The architecture and design elements of Angkor Wat are nothing short of breathtaking. The temple complex was constructed by the Khmer Empire in the 12th century and its  intricate design is a testament to their advanced engineering skills.

One notable feature of Angkor Wat's architecture is its  use of symmetry and proportionality , which gives it a sense of balance despite its massive size. Another fascinating aspect is how  every inch of surface area has been carved into ornate patterns and figures, including giant serpent-like creatures called naga that run along the railings.

What You’ll Do

You will undoubtedly love your first stop at the spectacular Ta Prohm temple to begin this one-of-a-kind trip in style and with your guide.

There is no rush!

Take your time because there are so many incredible locations for once-in-a-lifetime photographs!

Following our exploration of the temple complex, we proceed to additional unexpected locations!

Because, as previously stated, the purpose of our tour is to show you such diverse but magnificent sights right quickly!

This is why Pre Rup temple and Banteay Samre temple should be on your tour bucket list.

Also, the 640-step trek to the hilltop temple is relatively difficult, but you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Kulen Mountains and Angkor Wat in the distance.

Watch the sun rise over Angkor Wat on this full-day trip to Siem Reap’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor complex.

Your guide will bring you to Angkor Wat for sunrise before continuing to Angkor Thom, Bayon, the Terrace of the Elephants, and Preah Khan Temple.

We leave your accommodation at 4.10 or 4.30 a.m. (depending on the season) to watch the sunrise outside Angkor Wat.

The longest bas-relief carvings in the world can be seen at night when you enter the temple from the east side, which is less popular.

The best preserved is Angkor Thom’s south gate. It’s connected to the outer world by a 50-meter-long causeway.

On both sides of the causeway, 54 stone figures show the Hindu epic “The Churning of the Ocean.” 54 guardian gods pull the snake’s head on the left side of the moat, while 54 devil gods pull the tail on the right.

In this myth, the snake’s body is wrapped around Mt. Meru, which may be the Bayon temple. The Devas pulled the snake one way, and the gods pushed the other way, alternating back and forth, re-creating the world and the cosmos.

Angkor sunrise Angkor Thom is also visited.

Angkor Thom was the Khmer Empire’s beautiful capital city. Appreciate the city’s majesty before approaching. Bayon Temple’s central towers have more than 200 enormous faces.

The 350-meter-long Terrace of Elephants was the king’s audience hall. It features three central outworks and one end outwork. The center of the retaining wall depicts life-size garuda and lions, while the ends show an elephant procession with Khmer mahouts.

After a long but fascinating tour of Preah Khan Temple’s tangled interior, we drive back to your lodging.

➤ How do I plan a trip to Angkor Wat?

Three days would be adequate to explore the Angkor temple complex. On day 1 and day 2, you can explore all the best locations with our Private Angkor Wat 2-Day Tour. For a third day, you would love to take a tour like to see Roluos for some of the earliest Khmer buildings, visit Afternoon Siem Reap floating village tour [Siem Reap floating village Kampong Phluk guided tour]

➤ Is it worth getting up early to see the dawn at Angkor Wat?

“It was evident upon landing in Angor that the effort had been more than justified!” “Despite the presence of other passengers, the tour is nicely arranged.” “The three temple locations we visited were magnificent, and we have a lot of excellent images as a result.”

➤ Would you recommend this tour if I only had a few days in Siem Reap?

Our tour guides will pay great attention to you, offer you assistance, and provide you with any information you require. The tour is meticulously done after many years of experience.

Most of our previous visitors recommend taking this tour if you only have a short time in Siem Reap.

We may run the tour with fewer members depending on the season; for example, some groups may consist of only six or eight people.

➤ Is two days in Siem Reap enough?

The huge span of the Angkor temples and other sites in the area cannot be covered in a single day; at least three days are necessary. So, unless you have a friend in the area with an extra bed, you’ll have to stay in a Siem Reap hotel or hostel for the duration of your trip.

➤ Is there a dress code for visiting Angkor Wat?

The strict dress code at Angkor Wat forbids travelers from wearing too-revealing apparel. This category includes items that expose the shoulders, knees, or cleavage. When visiting Angkor Wat, tourists must dress modestly and cover their shoulders and knees with long skirts or pants that reach below their knees.

➤ How about tights? Is it okay to wear leggings to Angkor Wat?

Again, it is considered impolite to wear extremely revealing apparel in religious settings. The steps are steep and narrow, with largely old and uneven high risers. A sarong is OK.

However, due to the steps, it is not recommended. Leggings that are long enough to cover your knees are OK. They can, however, get hot later.

➤ Is a guide required to see Angkor Wat?

From afar, the temple, which many Cambodians see as the spiritual and cultural core of the country, is breathtaking.

Even still, when you approach it, it gets even more spectacular. Because the complex is so extensive, first-time visitors to Angkor may be delighted as well as overwhelmed by the massive number of visitors who visit the site each year. This is due to the overall size of the facility (about two million, with the majority coming between November and February).

➤ Do you see why you should go with a guide to Angkor Wat?

Nothing can prepare you for the first time you see the Angkor Wat temples in person, no matter how many times you’ve scrolled through your Instagram feed, glanced at the Cambodian flag, or walked by the stands selling fridge magnets, blogs, guidebooks, and market t-shirts with the iconic 5-towered structure emblazoned on the front.

All travelers who made the rookie mistake of not scheduling a temple tour in advance strongly advise going to Angkor Wat with a guide.

➤ When is the best time to visit Angkor Wat?

The dry season, which lasts from late November to the middle of April, is clearly the finest time to explore Angkor Wat. Temperatures decline at this time of year, resulting in milder days.

However, keep in mind that this is the busiest time of year for vacationers, so expect crowds and increased prices.

The sticky humidity caused by the wet weather in May exacerbates the high temperatures in Siem Reap in April and May.

Rain falls frequently in Angkor Wat from June to November, yet this is an ideal season to visit because the temples will be less crowded and the tropical landscape will be at its most lush green. Packing an umbrella is a good idea, but the rain is usually brief and interspersed with sunny breaks, so you should be able to get some great shots of Angkor Wat and its surroundings.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: Wear comfortable shoes and apply sunblock.

Wear comfortable shoes and apply sunblock.

There will be plenty of walking, especially at Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious structure.

Many more temples will demand considerable walking!

Bring sun protection items like a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. These are essential.

You should also pack bug repellent, especially if you will be there in the early morning or late evening, when mosquitoes are most active.

➤ Is it feasible to find bathrooms while visiting Angkor Wat?

Both Angkor Wat and Ta Prohm have adequate bathrooms, but Bayon (and others) have restored ones. On main thoroughfares, toilets are located near parking lots. Request a comfortable rest stop from your tour guide!

If you have a valid entrance ticket, you will not be charged to use the restrooms. Some toilet cleaners, though, may request a little tip.

Mr. Brown checked his watch eagerly as the sun began peeking over the temples of Angkor. Beside him, his tour group waited with bated breath, cameras poised. A hushed awe fell over the crowd as the first rays illuminated the majestic towers in dazzling gold. Mr. Brown smiled, proud to be sharing this magical moment with them. Though brief, the famous Angkor sunrise never failed to take his breath away.

The tour was nicely organised. We managed to see a lot, received a professional info about the sites and anciend Khmer empire in general from Somat. He answered all our questions and was helpful and flexible about some details like lunch times, arranging transport, things with hotel etc. The driver was helpful too and cared for us by handing out cold water and refreshing towels. So in general, everything top-notch and thank you for arranging this for us.

I highly recommend the Private 2-Day Tour of Angkor Wat. Very interesting information was provided by our tour guide at each of the temples we visited. The highlight of the tour for me was watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat. It was truly magical and something I will never forget. The tour also provided great harmony, visiting the most famous Angkor temples in two days and some lesser-known temples such as Banteay Kdei and Banteay Samre. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Angkor. The tour is well-organized and provides a great balance of history and culture. And the air-conditioned minivan was a plus, and the tour felt very comfortable.

I recently took the Private Angkor Wat 2-Day Tour and it was truly an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and gave us a detailed history of each temple we visited. The highlight of the tour for me was definitely watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat. The temple looked even more beautiful in the early morning light. Another highlight of the tour was visiting Phnom Bok temple at dusk. The sunset was truly breathtaking and the temple looked even more magnificent in the evening light. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Angkor. The tour is well-organized and provides a great balance of history and culture. The air-conditioned minivan was a plus, and the tour felt very comfortable. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough!

Tourism was identified as a major industry for Cambodia after years of civil unrest, and the listing of Angkor as a United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage Site in 1992 was key to implementing a national tourism plan for the country.

The jewel in Cambodia’s tourism crown is Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious site. It’s worth noting that this temple is but one of the many close to the rapidly growing township of Siem Reap. Archaeologists have identified over 1,000 religious sites scattered over the plains of northern Cambodia, with Unesco recognising greater Angkor as a heritage site for all to admire.

Interestingly, the area was declared the Parc d’Angkor or Angkor National Park in 1925. Covering 11,000ha, it preceded the opening of Malaysia’s King George V National Park, which later became Taman Negara, in 1938-1939.

Before the civil unrest in Cambodia, the park was administered by Conservation d’Angkor (now Apsara National Authority).

The first temples in this part of the country date back to the 9th century, with the last being built in the 12th century. During this period, Angkor culture dominated South-East Asia, but it declined for reasons that still baffle the experts. While the Khmer people still used the temples, the forests grew over most of them, and they seemingly disappeared. In the mid-19th century, the temples were “rediscovered” by French explorer Henri Mouhot, although even this is disputed by some experts.

Dedicated temple-goers can spend weeks discovering all the Angkor sites, while others will be able to see the main temples in just one or two days. Organised tours are available, or enthusiastic independent guides with their own transport can be hired at a (usually) reasonable price.

Siem Reap has many other non-temple attractions to make it a complete travel destination. If your budget permits, check into the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor to be graciously immersed in its heritage and have the ever-helpful staff arrange some iconic journeys to the temples and into the region.

Get off the tourist paths to explore antiquities like the Angkor Thom East Gate, also known as the Gate Of The Dead.

It’s in the timing

The monsoon plays a big role in the lives of those residing in South-East Asia, and the situation is no different in rural Cambodia, with the parched dry season being the most desolate time of the year.

The rainy season extends from June to October and reinvigorates the land to enable the rice crop to be planted in order to sustain life for all Cambodians. Tonle Sap, the region’s largest lake, fills and then overflows into the Mekong River system, where an abundance of fish are harvested.

The Angkor is very much a mixed site in that it protects both cultural and natural assets. Indeed, Angkor was a city that some suggest was bigger in its time than London then was. It was also a hydrological society, with large dams or barays that were based on the management of water to enable farming and religious activities. The management of the Unesco site takes into consideration that the local Khmer people live in and around the temples and are still dependent on the land and the forests in their daily lives. There are many faces to Angkor, depending upon the season and the time of day. During the wet season, small depressions within many temple grounds fill with water to present spectacular reflective surfaces for photographs.

Angkor Wat covers an area of 162ha with a moat and laterite walls on its periphery. When viewed from the front entrance, it looks sparsely vegetated, but from the air, or the elevated temple of Phnom Bakheng, the forests are most apparent.

The best times to visit Angkor are to avoid the height of the dry and wet seasons, with the period from November to February being the most popular with tourists. The build-up to the wet season from March to June is very hot and humid and should be avoided.

Temple touring

Access to most of the Angkor temples is strictly controlled, and visitors must purchase access passes. Tourists may be able to check out some of the more remote and lesser-visited temples without purchasing a pass, but only visiting those and not the main ones defeats the purpose of travelling to Angkor. A day pass costs US$37 (RM177), while a three-day pass is US$62 (RM296).

One of the features of most of the sandstone walls is the bas-relief, or three-dimensional engravings. Those of Angkor Wat and the Bayon temple are particularly intricate, with various apsaras, or celestial dancers, as well as numerous carvings that portray Angkor life in the past. Very few apsaras are the same, and there are thousands to be found throughout Angkor, despite many having been illegally removed.

One of the features of most of the sandstone walls in Angkor is the bas-relief, or three-dimensional engravings.

Ta Prohm temple remains entwined by the roots of huge trees, as it was intentionally left by early French archaeologists to show visitors what it looked like in the late 19th century, when they began documenting the temples of Angkor. This is the temple that was used as a backdrop in the 2001 Angelina Jolie movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

Then, archaeologists faced the dilemma of either letting the destructive forces of biological weathering go unchecked, as nature would have it or stepping in and restricting tree growth. The debate continues in the hallowed halls of global archaeological departments.

Proving that archaeology is alive and thriving, as recently as last year archaeologists unearthed some significant 600-year-old sandstone Buddhist statues buried under the platform at the southern gate of Ta Phrom.

The Elephant Terrace near the Temple of the Leper King is one of the best-restored areas. Local Khmer archaeologists and artisans, with the assistance of foreign experts, meticulously reassembled this part of the Angkor jigsaw puzzle.

Temple town

Siem Reap is the gateway to ancient temples and a civilisation that, at its height, was considered the world’s largest pre-industrial city with an estimated one million residents.

Siem Reap is a town that’s easy to get around on foot or on the back of a motorbike, the most common form of public transport here. Siem Reap was once a town that mostly attracted adventurous backpackers, but now it’s a trendy destination for hip travellers. It has evolved into a tourist town with many activities, from its legendary Pub Street to duty-free shopping, heli-tours, spas and bike tours, in addition to archaeological tourism.

Phare, the Cambodian Circus, is not to be missed, so start the night with sunset drinks, move on to the marvellously uplifting and skilful circus before booking a late dinner.

Vespa tours of the temples can be organised as a Raffles curated journey.

While visiting Pub Street in Siem Reap is a rite of passage for many young travellers, there are some fine bars, cafés and restaurants here, too, and in other parts of the town. Seek out restaurants such as Spoons, Cuisine Wat Damnak and Chanrey or the numerous hawker food outlets in the Old Market.

Grand accommodation

The exclusive Raffles Grand Hotel D’Angkor has always been the place to stay in town since it first opened in the 1920s. It fell into disrepair during the days of the Khmer Rouge but is now renovated to accommodate those who appreciate life’s little luxuries after a hard day of temple touring.

Raffles is also the preferred address for those who love heritage hotels, as it’s the grand colonial property in town. It has accommodated royalty, writers and movie stars, who were then the equivalent of today’s influencers and key opinion leaders.

The hotel reopened as Raffles in 1997 after a meticulous restoration and refurbishment effort. If the hotel is beyond your budget, at least take time out to enjoy a refreshing beverage in the hotel’s famous Elephant Bar.

It’s amazing how quickly the tourists have returned to Siem Reap after the horrors of the Khmer Rouge and the deleterious impacts of Covid-19. Direct international flights on airlines such as AirAsia have made this easier, but it is the determination of Cambodians for tourism to work that has led to millions of annual visitors discovering the temples of Angkor.

Travel notes

Getting there: AirAsia flies direct from Kuala Lumpur to the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport. The new, Chinese-built and funded airport, is located 50km to the east of Siem Reap.

Visa: Malaysians don’t require a visa to enter Cambodia, but some other nationalities do, and visas can be issued on arrival for US$30 (RM143) and a passport photo.

Where to stay: Being the tourist town that it is, Siem Reap has accommodation to satisfy all budgets, but those who want to reminisce the romantic days of grand touring, check out the Raffles Grand d’Angkor (raffles.com).
