Ann’s Adventures

Making a difference.

Train through Alaska June 2022

Ann’s Adventures has been doing group travel across Michigan, the United States, and the world for eleven plus years.  We specialize in making you feel like part of our family, you will feel right at home with us.

We are a family owned MICHIGAN based company. We have always been and remain committed to the economic success of our local economies. Ann’s Adventures focuses on group travel as a way to provide folks an opportunity to travel a planned itinerary with others who enjoy the same destinations.

With our experience, knowledge, and contacts, we have the expertise to create unique, interesting and budget-friendly group tours. Each will be planned around cultural, historical, sports or musical themes that you can identify with.

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas. I am a firm believer that traveling provides social, educational, physical, mental, spiritual and nutritional needs that all of us should experience to enhance our lives. I know you have all enriched my life. Thank-you!

We do business DIFFERENTLY.  You will work directly with the owner throughout the entire process.  Ann will listen to your needs to help you book the right group trip for you and your family and friends.

Ann’s Adventures is committed to creating safe, high-quality, affordable tours, and memories to last a lifetime.

Ann’s Thoughts and Comments…

Please check out the information farther down on this page regarding your ID for traveling both in the country and internationally. As things continue to change, we need to keep aware and be prepared! Let me know if you have questions!

Thanks go to all those who come and help with the monthly newsletter. It takes a lot of people to get these newsletters folded, taped and labeled. I sure could not do it without your help!

Thanks to all of you who continue to spread the word about Ann’s Adventures. Your support has helped to build this company each year. We continue to grow. We now have about 4,000 people in our data base. I am delighted that so many people are enjoying traveling to so many different places. This is an amazing adventure for me as I continue to meet new people and go new places!

                            april/ may 2024.

Welcome to Spring! Although as I type this on the first day of spring, there is snow on the ground and more predicted for the weekend. We have indeed been blessed with good weather for most of our trips so far this year. I am continually amazed at the number of people wanting to get on a bus and go somewhere! I love that everyone is so adventurous. An Office Update: Rebecca had back surgery at the end of March and will be on sick leave for at least a month. You will be seeing and hearing more from Izzy and Gayle when you come in or call the office. They will do their best to assist you. It is also possible that our hours will vary from day to day. Call before coming. Thanks for your patience as we all adjust to keeping things running smoothly. Rebecca sends her thanks for your prayers and well wishes. The neurosurgeons will be attempting to remove a cyst from her spinal cord. She has an upbeat attitude and hopes to be back in the office as soon as possible. We have added 2nd busses to several trips as well as added some new trips. The bigger trips for 2025 are coming together and then we will start adding shorter trips and day trips. Many of the theaters are announcing their 24-25 Seasons so I have some shows that I see are coming listed in this update to see what kind of interest there would be. This really helps me determine what to purchase. It also saves me time from planning trips no one is interested in taking. So, let me know what sounds like fun. Thanks for your help! Remember Senior Power Day is on May 22 and I will be there with a table to meet and greet you and answer questions about trips. Please stop by and say Hi! Tickets are now available in the office. See details in this update. Great news! The CDC has announced on March 1st that Covid-19 is no longer the emergency that it once was and included an official end to a pandemic-era plea for Americans to stay home for five days after testing positive. While it remains an important health threat, it now resembles other respiratory viral illnesses. This is good news for travelers. Please continue to be aware of your own health needs, wash hands, drink plenty of water and stay home if you are not feeling well. Thanks to the many volunteers who come and help fold, tape and label the newsletters. We are sending out around 2400 now and it takes a lot of volunteers to help make this happen. I couldn’t do it without you! Thanks to the over 1600 people who receive the newsletter through email. You are helping us save, time, postage and paper costs. I’m always glad to know how much you look forward to reading it. Thanks for your kind words!

April is National Humor Month. If you hear a good funny story, let me know… I like to share fun things on the bus trips!

Lost and Found Items… We have an assortment of items in our lost and found from a variety of trips. There are neck pillows. umbrellas, sunglasses, a jacket, and a few other items. If you are missing something, it never hurts to check the box!

Travel Club Networking Meeting

The next Travel Club Networking meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. at the office. All are welcome to attend. I am excited about many of our upcoming trips and will be happy to answer any questions. Travel Club Networking Meetings are held three times a year to allow people to provide ideas for future trips, meet with other travelers and get first-hand information about upcoming trips. They are in February, June and October. This is also a great meeting to attend to learn about travel tips and why I do the trips like I do. Come and be a part of the discussions. There are many great destinations.

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club meets the first Friday of every month at 8:30 a.m. at the Bob Evans in Birch Run. It is a great opportunity to get together with friends, ask questions of Ann, or make suggestions for future trips. No reservations are needed, just come and join us! Upcoming dates are  April 5; May 3; June 7; and July 5, 2024.

Romeos!  Calling all men!  Come and join us!

This group of men gather monthly to enjoy lunch, laughter and good conversation. Romeo’s stands for R owdy O ld M en  E ating O ut! No dues, no committees, just eat out every month with other guys to provide input on whatever is of interest to anyone. All men are welcome!

The luncheons will be on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. The locations change each month… April 18 at Culver’s in Birch Run; May 16 at Junction of Hope on M-57 just west of Montrose; and June 20 at Don Felipe in downtown Clio..

This group was started as a response to the women’s Red Hat Society. The women have a poem, “When I am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple!” There is also a poem called “When I am an Old Man, I Shall Wear Plaid!” So, an active group of guys attended the first meeting and the Romeo’s were officially started. The Romeo’s wear plaid shirts and meet for lunch!

What is cancellation protection?

Cancellation Protection is a specified amount of money for   overnight trips that is due with your deposit and protects all monies   (except the cost of the cancellation protection) in the event of   cancellation for any reason, anytime prior to departure. It is not   insurance but does provide protection for the cost of your trip if you   need to cancel. If your trip is interrupted, the cancellation protection   would cover the unused portion of your trip. Insurance is available and is included when we go overseas.   Collette Trips include insurance and that would cover much more   while we are in another country.

Become a STAR!

I offer a special program for frequent travelers. You can become a “STAR ” which stands for Special Travel Adventure Rate!  For only $36.00 per year you can become a STAR! As a result, every trip you sign up for will be $6.00 less in cost.  Therefore,  if you travel at least 6 times in a year,  you will have made your money back and for every trip after that you come out ahead!

TSA – Transportation Security Administration Acceptable Forms of ID

1 – REAL Michigan Driver’s License – Michigan is enacting a federally acceptable form of ID. This will be in effect by May 7, 2025. The REAL ID will be   required for flying within the United States, entry into certain   federal properties, entering nuclear facilities and military   bases. The Real ID Michigan Driver’s license has a star   in the upper right hand corner.

2 – Enhanced Michigan Driver’s License is already compliant and allows entry into the US by land or sea from   Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean without a passport. The Enhanced Michigan Driver’s License has an   American flag on the license just right of your picture. The newer ones also have a star in the upper right hand corner.

3 – Passport – is acceptable ID for any type of air flight to go anywhere. It is also acceptable for entry into certain federal facilities and entering nuclear facilities and military bases. It cannot be used as a driver’s license. To fly into the US from anywhere – including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, you must have a passport. Please check your driver’s license and your passport for their expiration dates.

Regarding Passports.. .

Passports are available at the Clio Post Office by appointment. Call 810-686-0810 to schedule your appointment. You need your birth certificate with a raised seal to apply for one. They are good for ten years. The post office can take your picture or you can get a passport photo taken at another location such as Walgreen’s or Rite Aid. If you live in another city, check your local post office for their passport hours. They may vary from post office to post office. We also have passport application forms available in the office.

Going south?…  Going North?…  Please take note!!

The post office does not forward bulk mail. If you want   to receive the newsletter and are heading south for any   length of time, please let me know. You can receive the   newsletter via email – then you can get it wherever you   are, give me a winter address and let me know how long   you will be gone or have the newsletter stopped. You can   call and resume it in the spring. Newsletters are returned   to me as undeliverable if you have your mail forwarded.   This is costly. When a newsletter is returned, we remove   the person from the mailing list until we hear from them.

W…ings for Travel

Preparations for a trip of any duration takes time.  I am encouraging everyone to think about preparing yourselves as well as your clothes, what to pack,  and what should be in your carryon!  Time to spread your wings!

1.   Waking:   Every trip requires an early start.  Begin setting your alarm a little earlier each day a couple weeks before the trip.  Then it won’t be such a shock to your system to suddenly be getting up so early every day.

2.   Walking:   If you not a person who walks regularly,  begin!!  Don’t try and start with a mile or two right away.  Try walking ten minutes a day then 20,  then 30.  It is amazing how much easier the trip will be for you if walking is not a shock to your system.  You will definitely have more fun!

3.   Watering:   Drink more water!  This is good for you even when not traveling.  However,  when we travel it is crucial that you not become dehydrated.  Keeping your body hydrated will help you to be healthier and your system to work more efficiently.

Get your own W…ings ready for travel!

Travel Certificates Make Great Gifts

Looking for the perfect gift?     Travel Certificates are available in any amount! They can be used for any Ann’s Adventures Trip! There is no expiration date! Tell your kids you want the gift of Travel! These make great gifts for retirement, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas or other special events such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day!

Driver Tips

For all day trips, the driver tip is included in the cost of the trip. On overnight trips, we do pass an envelope for the   driver.

Making A Payment

Payments can be made in cash, checks or money orders.   I can take credit cards  however,  there will be a 3% charge added onto the payment if you decide to use a credit card.  Checks should be made out to Ann’s Adventures.  When sending checks,  please write on the memo line what trip the check is for.  It helps me get your payment posted to the right trip more quickly.  If you would like a receipt,  you should include a self addressed stamped envelope.  There will be a $15.00 charge for any checks returned for insufficient funds.

Do I need to send a deposit?

A deposit assures your seat on a trip.  When you call to put your name on the trip list,  that lets me know how many people are interested.  Your deposit (or full payment) assures you of a seat.  Sometimes there are more names on the interest list than there are actual seats available.  When the maximum number of seats with money deposited are full,  the rest becomes the wait list.  The bottom line is…  If you really want to go,  you should put down a deposit.  For day trips,  a $20.00 deposit will hold your seat.  For extended trips,  the deposit amount is listed at the top of the article.  The remaining balance for all trips is due 1 month prior to the trip unless specifically noted.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds will be given only if there is a wait list and I am able to fill your place prior to departure. Partial refunds may be given if I am able to recover the costs of prepaid tickets, meals, etc. Cancellations and no-shows on the day of the trip will not be entitled to a refund. Refund checks are issued AFTER the trip is completed and can take a few   months to process. We often have to wait for refunds to come to us from the hotels, activities, etc. Thank you for understanding. Refund checks are issued to the person who paid for the trip. If your friend paid for your trip and you cancel, the   refund is sent to the person who signed you up to go. In order for my books to match, the money refunded must   match the person who paid it.

Medical forms

Is your medical form up to date?  A medical form ensures that I can give medical professionals correct   information about your health in the event of a medical emergency. If something happens, they need to know your   birthdate and list of current medications. If you need to update your form, I always carry extra on the trips. You can   ask me for a form or call and I can email one to you. You can always pick one up when you are in the office.

Dietary Restrictions

If you have a special dietary need, I need to know this in advance of the trip. When meals are catered for a   group of 50, caterers plan for the number of meals ordered and often do not have additional options ready on the spot. If you vary from the original menu, there may be an additional charge.

Stay Hydrated Always carry a refillable water bottle with you on every   trip. Staying hydrated is important for your health! We make restroom stops every two hours so you can use facilities and   stretch your legs!

Traveling with Ann you are guaranteed adventure, hospitality, culture, great accommodations and off the expected paths of travel. I've been fortunate to travel to Bali, Thailand, Portugal, Hawaii, Ireland and Key West. I prefer smaller groups, personable guides and varied itineraries that take into account individual interests. In Bali many chose to travel to the market and learn to cook their cuisine.. I opted out for a walk swimming and a massage. Ann's personality extends to ensuring the satisfaction of all the travelers. Whether you prefer bicycling down a volcano(I did) snorkeling, museums, temples... somehow Ann uncovers the best to explore. I'm so looking forward to traveling again. Thanks Ann, Ellen Deutsch

Awesome 11 days, 10 nights trip to Ireland. Ann arranged everything beautifully. Terrific fellow travelers. The hotels, food, scenery and our tour guide Anthony were all excellent. The last night we even stayed in a renowned castle hotel. Wonderful all around. I would recommend and would travel again with Ann's Adventures in Travel.

I just came back from the most amazing road trip with Ann's Adventures In Travel: Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley and Grand Canyon. It was so well organized and planned out, the hotels were lovely, the people were fantastic, and we had so much fun. After just a day or two, it was like we were a group of old friends traveling the Southwest. Our drivers and local guides from Bryce Canyon Scenic Tours and Shuttle Service accompanied us for the whole week, and we became great friends with them as well. I believe Ann is planning to repeat this trip next September, and if you have any interest in that part of the country, you would be wise to book this trip with Ann! She also has a number of bucket-list trips planned for the future, so check out her website at annsadventuresintravel.com!

I have been on several trips with Ann's Adventures in travel. Hawaii, Galapagos Islands, and most recently, Bali in March 2018 and the Grand Circle Tour of the Southwest in September 2018. Ann always accommodates her clients. Her trips are tailored to the needs of her guests. Generally 10 to 12 people on a boutique tour. She has gotten the best local guides to show us unbelievable hidden gems. On my trip to Bali, I was the only one in our group to hike Mount Batur. My guide was beyond excellent. He picked me up on time and got me back to the hotel. I had a one on one private guide take me hiking to see the sunrise. On our tour, we saw unique Balinese temples and did a 3 hour very easy bike ride through friendly neighborhoods in Ubud. Not to mention the best meal I ever had at an Argentinian steak house also in Ubud. Our trip was extended to the Gili Islands, a magical place with no cars... only horse and buggy or bikes to get around. Hotels in Bali were fabulous too! On our most most recent trip to the Southwest, we also had an amazing local guide. With every canyon and hike, the scenery and experience got better and better at each canyon. Just when you thought you saw the ultimate vista, another one came along. Ann's local guide made every effort to take care of everyone's interests from beginner hikers to experienced hikers. And he took us to some off the beaten path hikes in Bryce, Zion, and Capitol Reef canyons. Ann really cares about her clients and picks great hotels too, She always has several choices of daily experiences to suit everyone's interests. I am planning to join her next trip to Portugal. This is why she gets a 5 star rating!

I had a wonderful trip with Ann's Adventures in Travel. A small group tour of like minded travelers on a detailed itinerary that included culture, fun, physical activity and beautiful scenery. With a small group like this you have more flexibility in the schedule to adapt to things like weather, general group interest and physical abilities. Ann is fun, friendly and had planned a great trip with local culture and interesting locations.

Such a fun trip to Nashville!! Ann is a great organizer and makes every minute count.....from the walking food tour to the Grand Old Opry...to great restaurants....every detail was taken care of. She's also a great person and a lot of fun! I would highly recommend this travel group!!

From: Dolores Date: Mon, Mar 20, 2017 at 8:27 PM Subject: Ann Tobak Ann’s Adventures In Travel

My first encounter with a “Single Travel Group” was so much more than I anticipated . Not knowing one person in this group, I was somewhat apprehensive but, to my surprise, it was quite a wonderful experience. The tours, meals and accommodations were well planned . Ann made each and every one of us feel welcome, comfortable and treated each one’s needs as an “individual” and not a group. I was fortunate enough to make, what I anticipate to be, long lasting friendships. What a surprise! Thank you Ann.

From: Laura Date: Wed, Aug 3, 2016 at 11:04 PM Subject: Testimonial About Colorado Trip To: Ann Toback

The trip was everything I expected and more. I had wanted to go to Colorado for a long time, because I had never been to that part of the country and kind of knew it would be beautiful and oh so different than New York and the northeast in general.

Anne’s itinerary was great. We started out in Denver (so wanted to see what that city was like), had some really good meals and headed out the next day to explore as much of Colorado as we could. Anne’s friend Bob, a born and bred Coloradan, was our driver and tour guide. We mostly followed the plan, but because Bob and Anne knew the state so well, we would occasionally go off the plan. I saw the most beautiful, picturesque, Rockie mountain topography…and it continued to change and amaze as we drove along. Everything looked like a postcard. We went to lovely mountain towns (my favorite was Telluride), got to hike, saw waterfalls, relaxed in hot springs, rode horses and bicycles and some of us went white water rafting.  Took a cog train up to Pikes Peak and saw ancestral Pueblan villages. I learned that there’s so much to do there. So many outdoorsy things. It felt so healthy there. I really did enjoy.

Laura Rosenbluth

All along we stayed at the nicest hotels and enjoyed great food and shopping. There was something for everyone. Anne and Bob really made this a dream trip for me. I’m so glad I went and look forward to many more trips in the future.

Now that we returned from Hawaii, we want to thank you for the best trip. The local tour guide was excellent and the restaurants you recommended were delicious! No hitches that we were aware of.  Ann  NY. NY

I can’t wait to go on another trip with you and your company! I can’t say enough about my whole experience in Hawaii. From the very beginning, you were so organized and helpful and had so much information to share. I met a new good friend and finally get to visit NY-yeah! Thank you for a trip of a lifetime. Thank you for your well planned Hawaii trip. It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. Your expertise, patience, guidance, recommendations and the little extra touches you planned for us-every step of the way, combined to make this the most enjoyable travel experience. I have travelled with Ann on several trips and have enjoyed all of them. Ann is an extremely competent tour operator. She is well organized and shares her knowledge in a friendly way, with an authority that keeps everyone focused. Ann speaks clearly, with confidence and is sensitive to the groups needs. She is well researched and shares in-depth knowledge of the local areas of interest to a diverse group of travelers. I believe Ann enjoys meeting new people and has excellent leadership skills. Marlene A.NY,NY

I met Ann on a singles trip to Belgium and Amsterdam a few years ago with another travel company. A few of us were not interested in all the planned activities. Ann took charge and hired a private guide in Amsterdam one day for us and it was unbelievable! Our picnic in the country was the highlight! She organized some other fabulous stuff to during our own time. For someone who had never been there and was not the “tour escort”, all I can say is Wow! Since then I have been on many trips with her and all I can say is no one can plan a trip like Ann Cheryl B. Carmel, NY

I just got back from a trip to Yellowstone Park and the Grand Tetons. The tour leader was extremely knowledgeable. She took us to places I never would have known about and really explained the history. She even knew where the animals hung out. It was all that Ann promised and more! Can’t wait to go on another trip with you! Lynn G.Jericho, NY

This was a trip of a lifetime. It certainly lived up to the company name-Ann’s Adventures In Travel! Hotel accommodations were great, activities were planned every day that were available to those of us who wanted to partake, and we had personal guides rather than commercial tour companies. I’m looking forward to the next vacation with Ann and I don’t hesitate to suggest that you should too. Donna – Douglaston, NY

This was a once in a lifetime adventure. Hawaii is an amazing place and thanks to Ann we experienced it by air, land and sea. The hotels were beautiful and the people we traveled with are now lifelong friends. Rosina-Floral Park NY

Went with Ann to Colorado. We had the most amazing experiences. We stayed at great little inns. I highly recommend her tours. Dave S. Coral Springs, Florida

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic time we had in Maui and Kauai, and to say thank you for everything you had done to make this such a wonderful vacation. Our group started out as companions and ended up as my new family. Xx Every hike, bike, snorkel and boat ride was beyond beautiful. Each excursion topped the prior one, which I never thought could happen! They just got better and better. You always accommodated us and allowed us to tweak the activities to suit our needs. From wild adventure to hanging out at the glorious beach or pool. Having local tour guides, who have wide knowledge and inside scoops just added a wonderful dimension to the trip. Without a doubt, I will recommend this trip to anyone who really wants to see the true beauty of Hawaii. I hope to come back and share this trip with my friends and family. Liz – Brooklyn NY

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

ann's travel

I supercommute every week from New York City to Ann Arbor. I have to pay my own way, but I love getting to enjoy the benefits of both cities.

  • Susan Miller, a professor, supercommutes weekly from New York to Michigan.
  • Although the school doesn't cover her commute, Miller enjoys the different atmosphere in Michigan.
  • Despite potential downsides, Miller encourages others to consider supercommuting if given the chance.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Susan Miller , a professor at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, living in New York. It has been edited for length and clarity.

In January 2022, I began my weekly commute from New York City to Ann Arbor, Michigan. There, I teach a wide range of college classes as a full-time professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business .

As a supercommuter, I think I have the best of both worlds: I teach bright, well-rounded, caring students from around the world, and I get to return home and take advantage of everything that makes New York City exciting and interesting.

I book my airline tickets months in advance and spend between $120 and $250 for a roundtrip flight. My supercommuter schedule both energizes and fuels me, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

I had never supercommuted before this job

I began my career working for large companies, including Xerox, Colgate, American Express, and Warner Bros. My experience ranges from marketing and business development to brand management and licensing. Later, I was an entrepreneur and built a few companies.

While I traveled for all of these work experiences, I never had to commute weekly across state lines like I do now.

I get to enjoy an atmosphere and culture different from NYC. And it usually takes no more than two hours to fly between New York and Michigan . I sometimes joke that it takes me fewer hours to get from my NYC apartment to Ann Arbor, Michigan, than going on the Long Island Railroad into Manhattan for the 23 years I worked there.

Michigan has a different vibe, and I like it

I graduated from NYU with an MBA, so I often get asked why I don't just teach in NYC. There's something about Michigan — the Midwest. I can't explain it. The vibe is just different, and I like it.

When I'm on campus, there's a hyper-focus on being there a few days and then getting to come back home that I wouldn't get to experience if I were not supercommuting back and forth.

When I'm in Ann Arbor, I stay in a hotel attached to the business school and enjoy the faculty rate. I take a 180-step commute from my room to the school. There's an ease of living on campus in a hotel. I don't have a kitchen, so I usually dine at friends' houses or eat out.

I know the hotel staff, and it feels like my second home, without the upkeep.

I didn't become a supercommuter all at once

Starting in 2007, I became a regular guest speaker at the university. I'd been invited by my son's then-girlfriend to serve as a guest speaker in various student clubs — they were both sophomores at the school. While at one of these events, I met a woman named, Dr. Mary Hinesly, who asked me to guest speak in her class.

When Mary became head of her department in October 2021, she invited me to guest speak again, and then she asked if I'd be interested in teaching there full-time.

My initial reaction was that I was flattered but that it made no sense, as I live and work in New York and the school did not offer to pay for my commute . After sleeping on the offer, I called back and said, "It made no sense, it was crazy, but I was in."

Teaching in Michigan has plenty of perks

I get to teach at one of the best business schools in the country with wonderfully well-rounded students, and I have lots of football players in my classes.

One of the best things this year was seeing our football team win the national championship because I had so many of these athletes in my class. There are many events each week, and I can attend anything, including sporting events like basketball and lacrosse — two of my students are captains.

Being around my students is like breathing oxygen, and spending time with them makes me optimistic about the future.

Other than that, I enjoy the fresh air from the lakes and the nature of the Midwest, as opposed to city life.

Supercommuting has made me a better traveler

I know how to navigate flights and Ubers. Plus, I've learned how to maneuver quickly around crowded, bustling spaces — I'd even say I've gotten physically fitter after dashing through airports so many times. I can pack a small bag fast and cut my airport arrival down to the minute. Knowing how to avoid intense NYC rush hour helps me keep my commute short.

I learned how to increase my perks with Delta, as the Detroit airport is a Delta hub. I got an airline credit card , where I get a 15% discount on Delta flights, and just reached platinum status. I've also mastered the app, where I accrue miles I use for flights.

I'm already booking my fall 2024 flights, so I can fly cheaply, and I've learned to take advantage of the Delta Lounge for breakfast.

Supercommuting could have some downsides for some people

A few of my flights were canceled, but Delta has a flight from New York landing in Detroit almost every hour. If I'm ever running late, there's always a chance I could miss a flight and wait for the next one — but I haven't missed a flight yet.

Supercommuting can feel like you're living in two places, which might wear some people out. It could also be a problem for people without proper childcare. However, having grown-up children has made supercommuting easier for me.

I've met many people who supercommute . If an opportunity to supercommute intrigues you, I'd say go for it. You can be anywhere around the country with flights if you plan accordingly.

I supercommute every week from New York City to Ann Arbor. I have to pay my own way, but I love getting to enjoy the benefits of both cities.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Wolverines to Travel to Bloomington for Hoosier Collegiate

4/5/2024 12:01:00 PM | Men's Golf

By: Tom Wywrot

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team is in the stretch run of its spring season and are off to Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday (April 6-7) for Indiana's Hoosier Collegiate. The 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Pfau Golf Course at Indiana University with 14 teams in the field.

• U-M will travel five starters to the Hoosier Collegiate. Junior Hunter Thomson , redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland , senior Will Anderson , junior Yuqi Liu and redshirt-junior Jack O'Donnell will make up the Wolverines' starting five. Senior Jude Kim will join them as an individual.

• There will be 14 teams among the field for the Hoosier Collegiate, including Butler, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, High Point, Indiana (host), IUPUI, Michigan, Michigan State, Murray State, Northwestern (individuals only), Notre Dame, Purdue Fort Wayne, Rice, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso.

• Thomson is expected to make his 33rd consecutive start. He has not missed a tournament for U-M in three seasons. Anderson is set up to make his 23rd straight start and 37th of his 38-event career. Liu has started his last 18 events, while Hoagland has started all 10 tournaments this season.

• Michigan has two team titles this season -- the Island Resort Intercollegiate and the Virtues Intercollegiate -- while collecting seven top-five finishes in the eight total events. Individually, U-M has had four medalists with three runners-up. The Wolverines have posted 14 top-10 and 10 top-five individual finishes this season. Thomson has paced U-M, closing as the top Wolverine in six events.

• Including 11 straight to start the spring season, U-M has had 23 of its 27 team rounds below par with a season-low 273 (-15) in the second round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate. Overall, the Wolverines average 283.81 per team round. The Maize and Blue has posted six 54-hole events under par, including two sub-30 finishes -- 830 (-34) at the Virtues Intercollegiate and 834 (-30) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate.

• Thomson has posted a 69.48 scoring average, a U-M record pace. He fired 24 of his 27 rounds at or below par with a team-best 19 sub-par tallies. He has highlighted the season with a career-low 64 (-8) in the final round of the Palmas del Mar, which ties Michigan's second lowest single-round score record, and marks the second time a Wolverine has reached that mark after Hoagland fired a 64 (-8) in the second round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4). No Wolverine has finished a season with a sub-70 scoring average.

• With those six sub-par 54-hole totals, Thomson is averaging 208.44 per event, nearly eight shots under par. Overall, he has 17 sub-par 54-hole totals in 32 career events. During his career, he has averaged nearly even par per event (215.87).

• Thomson's career-low 201 (68-69-64, -15) total at the Palmas del Mar tied the program's second lowest single-round total, trailing only Kyle Mueller's record 198 (69-65-65, -15) at the 2015 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. This season, Thomson has two of the top three best individual 54-hole totals in U-M history -- that 201 total and his 202 (71-65-66, -14) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4).

• With 12 sub-par single round tallies, Hoagland is averaging a career-best pace of 71.67 per round, nearly four shots better than any prior season. His average sits as the third lowest in a season for a Wolverine. Hoagland has posted five sub-par 54-hole totals after recording just one in his two prior seasons. He set a career low with his 206 (-10) total in the season opener at the Island Resort Intercollegiate.

• Alongside Thomson (69.48) and Hoagland (71.67), a total of four Wolverines are averaging below 72 per round. Anderson adds his name to the list with his career-best pace of 71.96 per round which incldes 10 sub-par tallies, while Kim is at 71.71 with five sub-par rounds. With eight tallies of par or better, Liu is just behind with his career-low pace of 72.96, nearly four shots better than any of his prior two seasons.
