Welcome to Arequipa

Upon arrival in Arequipa, you will be transferred from the airport to your hotel.

Santa Catalina Convent

This morning, you will begin your tour with a visit to the districts of Carmen Alto and Yanahuara, where you will find a viewpoint with panoramic views over the city and of the imposing volcanoes Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu.

Then you will make your way to the historic center, stopping at the Plaza de Armas, home to Arequipa’s finest stores stocking garments made from vicuña and alpaca wool, as well as some of the most representative buildings of the city, including the impressive cloisters of La Compañía de Jesús and the polychrome Chapel of San Ignacio that you will get to visit.

Finally, you will go to the colorful monastery of Santa Catalina, founded in 1580, where you will be able to appreciate its cloisters, picturesque streets, and squares.

From the City to the Valley of Colca

Early departure to start the visit to the Valley. This trip takes approximately 5 hours with stops along the way included. On the route you can see the area of ​​Pampa Cañahuas, where you can photograph the South American camelids, llamas, alpacas and vicuñas in the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Reserve.

You will go through a small snack restaurant to have an infusion of coca and appreciate the rock formations, then continue with the trip until you reach Chivay, the capital of the province of Caylloma, where you will have time for lunch in a typical restaurant.

In the afternoon you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the thermal waters of La Calera (optional) or stay at the hotel and have the afternoon free.

Colca Canyon & Condor Cross

Early after breakfast, you will go to the Mirador de la Cruz del Cóndor, where if the weather permits you will observe the flight of the largest bird on the planet. We will have a short walk along the edge of the canyon for about 40 minutes to have better panoramic views and look for condors on our way.

After the visit to the Cruz del Condor, you will make some stops at another viewpoint to appreciate the terraces of crops, before continuing to the neighboring town of Maca to appreciate its church and local handicrafts, and having lunch in a typical restaurant at Chivay.

After lunch we make our return trip back to Arequipa, with a stop en route in Patapampa where you can appreciate the Chila and Ampato volcano ranges around you, as we pass through the highest point on the entire trip (4,910 meters above sea level).

Arequipa Tour & Farewell

Today might be the final day in Arequipa, but the fun is far from over. Our first port of call will be Las Canteras de Añashuayco where we will appreciate the enormous ignimbrite cliffs from which the blocks from which the most important colonial places of the city were built were extracted.

To this day there are still stonemasons who work on ashlars, and during our tour we will see a mega-carving of the church of La Compañía de Jesús, and one of the representative lion of the city.

Next we will move to the Culebrillas area where we will have a walk for about 20 minutes inside a narrow mini-canyon forged from water erosion, and discover some petroglyphs of the Wari culture from more than a thousand years ago.

After returning to your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport in Arequipa at the scheduled time.

Most Colca Canyon Tours operate out of Arequipa, a beautiful city in southern Peru.

The journey from Arequipa to Colca Canyon is approximately a 3.5-hour drive to reach the starting point of Valle del Colca in the Chivay region.

WHERE TO BOOK TOURS OF COLCA CANYON

There are dozens of tour operators and offices located in Arequipa to book a Colca Tour, but in my experience, it can be overwhelming trying to decide which operator to book a tour without being ripped off.

Alternatively, you can book Colca Canyon Tours online in advance to avoid the hassle of having to organize a trip once you have arrived in Arequipa.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

It’s possible to visit Valle del Colca any time of the year, though it’s recommended to tour Colca Canyon between March and June when the Condors are most active.

You’ll want to avoid the rainy season at Colca Canyon which is from December to March.

Colca Canyon’s altitude is 3,500m above sea level so you may feel some lightheadedness. Be prepared with any medications to prevent altitude sickness and bring warm clothing.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE COLCA CANYON TOUR

The Colca Canyon Tour from Arequipa starts bright and early at around 3 am for a hotel pick-up. The drive out to Colca Canyon in the minivan takes around three and a half hours to reach the town of Chivay and this is where breakfast is included before beginning the Colca Canyon one day tour.

After breakfast in Chivay, the Colca Tour continues along a winding mountain road, deep into the Colca Valley with several stops along the way at scenic viewpoints overlooking the most incredible landscapes!

It’s difficult to get a clear perspective of the entire Colca Canyon, that’s why there are many lookout points to check out on this route.

The minivan then makes a two-hour stop at the most famous viewpoint, Cruz del Condor, and this is where you can spot the flight of the world’s largest flying bird, the Condor.

With a wingspan of more than 3m, weighing up to 15kg, and standing 1.2m tall, these raptors are truly a magnificent sight to see.

There are a number of walking trails and dozens of lookout points to explore while on tour, each of which boasts unreal views up and down the valley!

If you are wanting to capture good pictures of the flight of the Condor then you’ll need a decent zoom lens on your camera. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the right lens on my camera to get any decent photos of the Condor though it was an incredible experience seeing three or four Condors circling the skies above my head!

The Colca Tour continues back to Chivay for lunch and a short wander around the small village town markets before making the long drive back to Arequipa.

On the road between Colca Canyon and Arequipa, the minivan will stop at the Patapampa viewpoint, also known as Mirador de Los Andes, for majestic views of the Cordillera and surrounding volcanic landscapes. This is also the highest point on the tour sitting at 4,910m above sea level.

The tour arrives back in Arequipa between 5 pm and 6 pm with a drop-off at requested hotels. I recommend spending the night here before going back from Arequipa to Cusco .

Situated at an altitude of 3,600 meters above sea level, Colca Canyon is one of those destinations you can’t miss on your trip. Rocky paths, lush vegetation, Andean villages, and colcas – storehouses – are just some of the things that make up the Canyon. Many civilizations have lived here, the first being the Cabanas and Collaguas cultures in 600 AD – predating the Incas. These mentioned were already highly advanced in agriculture, giving way to many systems, structures, terraces and techniques that are still present to this day.

A canyon rich with culture and history, it’s now visited by thousands of travelers making it Peru’s third most visited destination. A wide range of tours, treks and excursions leave Arequipa daily and once there, you’ll come across dozens of activities to enjoy.

How to get to Colca Canyon

The best way to get to the Colca Canyon and truly discover it’s beauty is with a tour or trek. The journey is a 3-hour drive and is considered by many as one of the most scenic trips in Peru. You’ll pass through jaw-dropping scenery and views of mountains, volcanoes, and beautiful wildlife.

You’ll have transport to and from Arequipa and some include stops for food or at viewpoints which make the trip much more enjoyable. It’s also a great way to help out local communities as many tour operators give back and bring tourists to these spots that would usually be missed.

It is possible to go on your own, but not recommended as the extra organization and multiple buses/taxis you’ll have to coordinate bring stress and take away some of the fun of the trip.

One of the ways to see the beautiful landscape of Arequipa is by canyon tour. A number of different tours are offered to the Canyon, varying in length and price range. Most tours are either 1-day or 2-day experiences and prices are usually around the $30 mark.

On these tours, local people guide you through the canyon and show different scenery throughout. From the soaring condor bird at Condor’s Cross, to local villages and Alpacas. These tours are available throughout the year and vary in difficulty, catering to all levels of physical ability. Most tours include pick-up from and drop-off to your hostel/hotel in Arequipa.

*Important to Note* – The official entrance fee of 70 soles must also be paid on these tours.

As well as tours, 2 or 3 day treks are also available. These treks tend to be a little more expensive than the tours, costing between $40-$50. On these treks, you’ll experience what life in Colca Canyon is really like, sleeping in rustic lodges in the heart of the valley.

These treks are available throughout the year and the level of physicality involved spans from easy to difficult.

*Important to Note* – The official entrance fee of 70 soles must also be paid on these treks.

• Make sure to take cash with you to pay for the Colca Canyon entrance fee (70 soles) – no tour or trek includes the cost
• Make sure to acclimatize at least one day in Arequipa to lower the risk of having altitude sickness

Colca Canyon 2 Day Tour

Hotel/Hostel Pick-up: Between 07:30am & 08:20am Return Time: 17:30pm next day

Detailed Itinerary 2 Day Tour:

Day 1: Arequipa City to Colca Canyon Valley

We pick you up from your hostel or hotel in Arequipa between 07:30am and 08:20am, and depart by bus on your excursion towards the Colca Valley. We will drive across Pampa Cañahuas in the Aguada Blanca National Reserve which is home to herds of vicuñas, llamas and alpacas, so you can stop to get that all important selfie with an Alpaca! We also stop at the Mirador de los Andes, the crater of Chucura, and the Mirador de Chivay to get some incredible photos on the way to our final destination, Chivay.

We arrive to Chivay at around 13:00pm where we will have some lunch and check in to your basic hotel for the night. You then have the option to visit the local hot springs if you want, or simply explore the small but picturesque town of Chivay. Later in the evening, you will meet for dinner with your guide and go to visit a local Peruvian folklore show, where you will be encouraged (and sometimes forced) to partake in the local dancing and singing! An early night is recommended, so try to avoid the local Irish bar!

Day 2: Colca Canyon Valley to Condor’s Cross to Arequipa

After an early breakfast (around 06:00am), we depart to the “Condor’s Cross” from where we will hopefully see the world famous Andean Condor birds fly majestically above us as they rise up from the Canyon. We will take you to different viewpoints of the Canyon to allow you to explore and appreciate the sheer size of this incredible canyon (the second deepest in the world!). On the way back to Chivay, we stop at the town of Yanque, visit its beautiful church and its characteristic stone streets among other attractions. To have spectacular views of the Colca Valley, we will drive to the observation points of Choquetipo and Artahuilque where you can see pre-Inca tombs and mock ups of the terraces, so make sure you save plenty of space in your memory card for these amazing places.

After lunch at a local restaurant we return to the city of Arequipa, arriving at approx. 17:30pm where we will drop you off at your hotel or hostel.

• English speaking guide – local expert who knows everything about the Canyon
• 1 night accommodation in Chivay “La Estancia” (basic shared hostel)

• Entrance ticket to Canyon: S/.70 soles – not included on any tour due to it being illegal to include it

How To Get To Colca Canyon

The Colca Canyon is located about 4-hours outside of the city of Arequipa. The best way to get there is to take a tour or trek which includes transportation to and from Arequipa. If you are looking for information on the best buses to take to Arequipa, visit our passes page . Select your departure city, the countries you want to visit, and amount of time you have to travel. Then browse our passes to see which include your desired stop in Arequipa.

For the 2 day tour, bring a small bag only. Large luggage can be stored at your accommodation in Arequipa.

What is the difference between the Colca Canyon TOURS and TREKS?

During the tours you will have limited walking sections as most of the time you stay on a bus and only get outside at several viewing points. The tours are more recommended for travelers who want (or because of physical conditions) have to take it easy. Treks however, are perfect for people with good physical condition. With treks you will definitely get more and intense views of the beautiful and unique landscape of the Canyon.

I do not want to take all of my stuff with me. Where can I leave my big bag?

Hotels and hostels in Arequipa will normally store your bags in their safety deposit for free whilst you are away at the Canyon, until you check-in again upon your return. Head off for the trip with just what you need and leave the rest in storage. Especially for the trek as you will need to carry what you take.

I do not feel well and wish to cancel my trip for tomorrow morning.

Peru Hop does not operate the Colca Tours. The tour provider allows changes up to 17:00pm the day before at no cost. Cancellations or missed tours will be charged the full fee.

I woke up late and missed my tour pick up. Can I change it for tomorrow?

Peru Hop does not operate the Colca Tours. The operators will charge us fully for any NO SHOW or missed departure not previously cancelled before 17:00pm the day before. If you would like to book the tour again for the next day then this is possible but you will have to pay a second time.

Will I see Condors on this tour?

There are quite a few Condors out there and as we visit different viewing points the chances are quite good. We still cannot guarantee that you will be able to see them but if you get lucky they will fly just above your head!

Can I have a private room if I travel alone?

Yes, of course but you will need to pay an extra 20 soles. You must inform your guide on the first day of your tour.

Is there an upgrade possible in accommodation, instead of a basic hotel?

No, this Colca Canyon provider does not offer alternative accommodation. If you wish to stay in a different hotel or lodge in the Canyon it is recommended you book a private tour of the Canyon.

Book with us the one-day tour to Colca Canyon + hot springs by bus departing from the city of Arequipa. Located in the Caylloma province, it has a depth of 4,160 m (13,648 feet), making it the fourth deepest canyon on the planet.

In 2019, UNESCO declared the Colca Canyon and Andagua volcanoes as a World Geopark.

The Colca Valley is also home to some Andean mammals such as alpacas, vicuñas, and llamas. Additionally, you can observe one of Peru’s most iconic birds, the Condor — Vultur Gryphus .

You will leave Arequipa city early in the morning, you’ll make your way to a small town known as Chivay located at 3635 m.a.s.l. — this bus ride lasts about 3 hours.

• From the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint (3800 m.a.s.l), you will observe the majestic Colca Canyon. In 2019 UNESCO declared the Colca Canyon as the third deepest canyon in South America with a depth of 4160 meters and the fourth deepest canyon on the planet.
• This canyon is the perfect place to enjoy the nature and learn about the Colca Valley history. At this place, you will be able to see the famous Colcas—which were food warehouses in pre-Hispanic times located on the mountains of the valley where the ancient Peruvians would keep quinoa, corn, cereals, potatoes, etc.
• In conclusion, the term Colca means “food store” and its origin is attributed to the Collaguas and Cabanas civilizations who inhabited this valley before the arrival of the Spaniards.
