A-State Menâs Basketball Adds Transfer Kobe Julien
4/24/2024 11:00:00 AM
JONESBORO, Ark. (4/24/24) â Arkansas State men's basketball head coach Bryan Hodgson announced Wednesday the addition of graduate transfer forward Kobe Julien to the 2024-25 roster.
Julien â a 2024 NABC First Team All-District 23 and Second Team All-SBC performer â joins the Red Wolves after spending the last six seasons (2018-24) at Louisiana and has one year of eligibility remaining. This past season, he led the conference in scoring at 17.3 points per game and shot 44.6 percent from the field. Julien earned two of his three career conference Player of the Week honors this past season.
"We are fired up to add Kobe to the Red Wolves family," Hodgson said. "Kobe has been one of the best players in the Sun Belt for the last several years, and brings some much-needed experience to our roster. Kobe has one of the most complete skillsets we played against last year, and is an elite scorer at all three levels."
The Baton Rouge, La., native scored in double figures 31 times this past season, including 20-plus in 11 games. He connected on 131 of 159 from the free-throw line, owning an 82.4-percent mark that tied for fourth in the league. He also shot 32.5 percent (53-163) from beyond the arc and averaged 4.8 rebounds per contest.
In Sun Belt play, Julien averaged 16.2 points and 5.3 boards, shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 83.0 percent at the charity stripe.
Julien is a two-time All-Sun Belt selection totaling 1,135 points (12.1/game) and 353 rebounds (3.8/game) in his career and is a 43.2-percent shooter from the field, while shooting 33.9 percent from deep and 76.2 at the foul line. He boasts career highs of 30 points (Nov. 21, 2023, vs Buffalo) and 10 rebounds (Feb. 3, 2024, vs South Alabama), as well as five 3-pointers made at Louisiana Tech on Dec. 9, 2023.

Thieves are using electronic devices to break into locked cars
NASHVILLE, Tenn. ( WSMV /Gray News) - Video shows thieves using new technology to break into locked cars in Nashville.
Residents said a group of people went around holding transmitters next to cars and opened doors within seconds. People who had their cars broken into said they could not believe it.
âHe opened that locked door like it wasnât even locked,â Marek Taylor said.
The video shows someone breaking into a car Taylor said he locked just hours before.
âThey pulled up in their car. The driver got out, and he came right up and made a beeline straight over towards the car,â Taylor said.
The video shows the man struggling to unlock one neighborâs car at 3 a.m. on Thursday before running to Taylorâs truck.
âI was about to laugh at them, thinking, âWell, I lock my car all the time. Have fun getting in there,â and then he opened that door like it wasnât even locked,â Taylor said.
Taylor said the thieves used whatâs called a transmitter.
âWhat it does is it amplifies the signal from your key fob inside your house and makes the car think that heâs standing right next to the car with your key fob,â Taylor said.
Itâs a tactic that Taylor and his neighbors said they had no idea existed.
âItâs tough to know that you think youâre in a safe neighborhood and then something like this happens,â Brett Baranauckas said.
âI had never seen anything like that before,â Taylor said. âI thought if you locked your car door, the only way they could get in is if they forcefully broke in.â
Taylor said there is something you can do to stop this.
âIf you put your key fob in an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) bag, then it stops them from being able to use that transmitter,â Taylor said. âSo, the only way they can break in is if they actually break a window or forcibly jam your open door.â
People in the neighborhood said they are investing in RFID bags.
While Taylor said all they took from him were a few expensive glasses, Metro Nashville Police said so far this year, hundreds of cars have already been broken into. Police said they are constantly warning people about this issue.

How antiwar student protests are spreading across U.S. universities
The arrest of 100 antiwar protesters at Columbia University on last Thursday sparked a new wave of campus unrest. Demonstrators set up encampments at colleges spanning the nation, with students demanding that their universities cut ties or reveal their involvement with corporations doing business with Israel or profiting off the war in Gaza .
This is how the burgeoning protest movement started, escalated and spread â and where it might go from here. Commencements for the class of 2024 begin in weeks.
An ongoing protest at Columbia
Last Wednesday, protesters set up tents on the South Lawn of Columbia University and flew Palestinian flags. They held demonstrations in which they chanted, banged on noise makers and denounced the âgenocideâ in Gaza.
But around midafternoon the next day, New York police began breaking up a protest at Columbia, arresting demonstrators who had occupied a campus lawn in support of Palestinians.
This came at the request of Columbia President Minouche Shafik, who had written to the New York Police Department earlier in the day to tell them that protesters had been trespassing on the South Lawn of the universityâs Morningside Heights campus and represented âa clear and present danger to the substantial function of the University.â
She requested that the department send officers to campus to remove them. In total, 108 were arrested.
The protest came a day after Shafik testified before Congress, pledging to lawmakers during a hearing on antisemitism to balance studentsâ safety with their right to free speech.
Shafik told members of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce that balancing the free speech rights of those who want to protest with the rights of Jewish students to be free of harassment and discrimination at Columbia has been the central challenge on campus. Her hearing followed one in December in which three other university presidents â from Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania and MIT â were scrutinized over their testimony before Congress, during which they declined to say calls for the genocide of Jews would violate campus policies. The leaders of Harvard and Penn later resigned.
After the arrests last week, protesters reconvened on the West Lawn and have been camping there ever since.
Late Tuesday, administrators set a midnight deadline for them to clear out but extended it by 48 hours early Wednesday, citing âimportant progressâ in negotiations with protest organizers.
More student antiwar protests
Starting Monday, protests sprang up at college campuses across the country, including at New York University, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of Michigan.
At Yale, 47 students were arrested. Officers gave one warning around 6 a.m. and within minutes began arresting protesters who had been camped out on Beinecke Plaza.
Those students were charged, processed and released â and almost all of them reconvened at an off-campus intersection near Beinecke to join hundreds of others to continue their protest as New Haven police blocked the intersection and looked on.
Meanwhile, on Monday night, 120 protesters were arrested at NYUâs campus.
And on the West Coast, students at California State Polytechnic at Humboldt barricaded themselves inside a building, the campus went on lockdown, and administrators eventually closed the campus through Wednesday; the university urged people to stay away from the âdangerous and volatile situationâ at the hall and said it was âdeeply concerned about the safety of the protesters.â
Where will the antiwar protests go next?
The drumbeat of antiwar protests has not been steady. Tuesday was relatively quiet compared with Monday, but with protests in Texas and California on Wednesday, itâs possible that encampments wonât be leaving college campuses anytime soon. In fact, more could be cropping up.
Columbiaâs protests and the ones that followed inspired Merlin Van Alstine, a University of Minnesota student and an organizer with the schoolâs chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, and about 30 other students to set up their own encampment. By Tuesday morning, nine of her fellow demonstrators were arrested and charged with trespassing.
Meanwhile, students at the University of California at Berkeley set up an encampment Monday that continued to grow into Tuesday. They hung up a banner spanning building columns that read: âAn injury to Gaza is an injury to all.â
The movement also made its way to the District. On Tuesday, hundreds of American University students marched to the presidentâs office building to demand that the administration divest from Israel.
The protest came a day after the schoolâs undergraduate senate passed a nonbinding resolution calling for divestment, to which President Sylvia Burwell said in a statement that the resolution âdoes not represent American Universityâs position and will not be implemented.â
On Wednesday, protests broke out at Brown University in Rhode Island, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
On Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement officers and protesters clashed during demonstrations at USC.
Also on Wednesday, protesters at the University of Texas at Austin began demonstrating at the behest of the Palestine Solidarity Committee, which had called on students to walk out of class at 11:40 a.m. and occupy the universityâs South Lawn. They cited demonstrations at Columbia, Yale and âcountless others across the nationâ as inspiration.
In the afternoon, Texas state troopers moved in on the demonstration and began arresting protesters who chanted, âThe whole world is watching!â
