40 Inspiring Asian Travel Bloggers to Spark Your Next Vacation

I am a participant in the Amazon Affiliates Program, so basically I earn a small commission if you use any of the affiliate links on this post - at no extra cost to you! Dope right?

top asian travel bloggers

I’m going to come out and say it. Where are all the Asian travel bloggers in the forefront of community???

Asians have literally been traveling the world SINCE THE BEGINNING OF FOREVER! With nearly 57% of all Asian-Americans over the age of 18 taking at least one international trip a year, you would THINKKK tourism boards, travel expos, and travel-related companies would be climbing over each other to showcase their awesome and inspiring travels!

And yet…..they aren’t. Time and time again, Asian travel bloggers are left out of the conversation.

But WHY though???

You guys think I’m lying? Go ahead, think of the top 10 travel bloggers off the top of your head. Not just your favorite bloggers either – I mean the top travel bloggers with vast visibility to the travel community.

To be blunt, “the travel community” caters to the Western world. Everything is in English. When I was studying abroad in France, I was hanging out with another student in my program who was Asian-American. We were both in a super expat-y cafe, when someone came over to us to ask for directions. He -shockingly- approached me first. He didn’t even acknowledge my friend was there. When I had no idea how to answer, my friend spoke up. Do you know what this stranger said?

He laughed and said, “Oh sorry, I didn’t know you spoke English.”

It was just completely natural for him to assume I spoke English, but not my friend who was sitting next to me??

THE MODEL MINORITY IS A MYTH!!

I posed the question, “why do you think Asians are underrepresented in the travel community?” to someone, and their reply was

‘Well, probably because they don’t travel for leisure. Just for work or family obligations.’

I gave you the stats earlier, remember? So why would anyone just assume that an ENTIRE group of people just…..DOESN’T travel??? I’m not going to talk too much about the model minority MYTH

but I do want to point out that because of this MYTH , Asian communities in America specifically have always been neglected because the MYTH says that Asians are doing “just fine.”

“Nothing can be WRONG in their community. They’re always doing SO GREAT!”

This leads to immigrant families not having proper instructions or guidance for healthcare because there are no translators available. Children in need are not given extra guidance in school. Members of the Asian community being targeted with anti-Asian harassment, discrimination, and VIOLENCE. Southeast Asian communities are practically erased from the conversation. Ignored. Neglected.

There aren’t any big travel groups celebrating Asian travelers. Even TOP travel publications are guilty. You might stumble across a “top Asian travel bloggers!” post and when you open it….all the bloggers are white expats in Asian countries………………….

“But they’re doing just fine.”

Either that, or they are USED as a token POC by companies and brands to feign diversity. To be seen, but blended into the background.

If you’re Asian, you already knew this though.

I don’t know how many times I have to say this, but – REPRESENTATION MATTERS PEOPLE!! The Asian perspective matters. And their voices deserve to be heard. So, without further ado, here are some super fly travel bloggers that you NEED to be following!

*Note, this list is basically all women/non-male bloggers. I don’t typically follow a lot of male bloggers as it goes, but there are some incredible Asian men holding down the blogging game (liiike Eli from @thepartyingtraveler!). But since the list was 99.9% female, I decided to do a separate male post, which I will link once completed! Thanks!

Emma from bold notions.

asian travel blogger

I appreciate Emma’s blog because she tells a story in her posts. Yes, she offers itineraries and trip guides, but she also shares the highs and lows of her trips, because believe it or not – travel is not all sunshine, rainbows, and coconut drinks. Emma is humble, down to Earth, AND HOLY COW, she is a really great human.

The literal epitome of work hard, travel harder. Cherise has a full time job that she absolutely loves, though it requires her regularly work over the standard 40 hours a week. She seriously CLOCKS IN THOSE HOURS. And yet, she is living proof that you can have a stable and fulfilling full time job and STILL TRAVEL LIKE A BOSS. If you need some serious inspo for weekend traveling and making the most of your limited PTO, Cherise is your gal.

Krystine is an absolute joy, and although she now spends her days hopping continents, she doesn’t place herself in some sort of unattainable position. Best places to visit in asia.

From megacities to remote islands, Asia's top travel spots offer a hearty dose of adventure, ancient history and culture. And with most Asian destinations now fully open after years of pandemic restrictions, there has never been a better time to plan a trip. After considering local prices, accessibility and the variety of attractions in each destination, along with traveler feedback, U.S. News ranked the best places to visit in Asia. Contribute to next year's list by casting your vote below.

Sagarmatha National Park

Railay beach, guilin and lijiang river national park.

If your dream vacation involves posting up on a postcard-worthy beach, the Maldives is for you. This far-flung destination, which is located about 370 miles from civilization in the Indian Ocean, is made up of more than 1,100 idyllic islands (roughly 200 of which are inhabited). The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. The best way to experience this slice of paradise? Stay in one of many overwater bungalows , of course.

Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Spend days touring quirky museums, exploring fascinating architecture or visiting Odaiba for its premier shopping scene. Or, take in some quieter, more peaceful moments at a holy site like the Meiji Shrine or Sensoji Temple. Tokyo's unrivaled gastronomic landscape (think: sushi, ramen, sky-high cocktail bars and more Michelin darlings than you could hope to visit) also makes it a bucket list destination for foodies.

asian travel paradise reviews

Phuket, Thailand's elongated beaches and cerulean waters embody a paradise that few other Asian destinations can rival. Besides swimming and relaxing on the beach, visitors can take traditional, wooden longtail boat tours to James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay to see the surreal limestone rock formations that rise from the sea. The towering Big Buddha statue is also a top attraction, while Phuket's buzzing beach clubs and nightlife options hold appeal for those looking to let loose. What's more, like most destinations in Thailand, travelers can find relatively affordable lodging options here.

asian travel paradise reviews

This Nepalese national park is famous for housing the behemoth that is Mount Everest, the highest point on earth, and promises a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it is important to know that Sagarmatha is not just Everest. The UNESCO-listed park also offers several other sky-high Himalayan peaks, as well as sweeping valleys, scenic glaciers, deep gorges and incredible wildlife, including snow leopards and red pandas. Just note, seeing the park's top attractions typically requires at least two weeks of trekking, and due to Sagarmatha's high elevation and rocky, steep terrain, a trip here isn't for the faint of heart.

asian travel paradise reviews

A British colony until 1997, Hong Kong's strong Western influence sets it apart from China's mainland metropolises. Beyond Hong Kong's sleek, towering skyscrapers (best admired from Victoria Peak), visitors can find natural and cultural gems on the more than 250 outlying islands, such as Lantau Island, or shop the city's bustling street markets. Dim sum is a must, but Hong Kong's robust dining scene also offers everything from street food to Michelin-starred fine dining. And when the sun goes down, watch the Symphony of Lights laser show dazzle the skyline along Victoria Harbor.

asian travel paradise reviews

Tucked among lush mountains in northwest Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a sized-down version of Bangkok's buzz paired with a tranquil culture and natural beauty. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. Then, step outside of the city walls to visit an ethical elephant sanctuary or two and a wander through beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

History lovers and Instagrammers alike will revel in the sites of Kyoto. The city, which used to be Japan's capital until imperial times, is awash with centuries-old shrines and temples, including the gilded Kinkakuji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, a shrine that dates back to A.D. 711. In addition to saving time for religious sites, be sure to visit the famous Philosopher's Path, preferably during cherry blossom season, and the mystical Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. When hunger strikes, treat yourself to kaiseki: a traditional multicourse meal native to Japan. For another essential Japanese experience, stay at one of the many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in Kyoto.

From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

About the author

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”

When I ask people: “If money wouldn’t matter, what would you do?”

Most of the answers I get are regarding traveling. If traveling is on the top of your priority list, you should make a habit of your traveling. Travel shouldn’t be an escape of your daily life, but it should be part of your life. The more you travel, the more acquainted you become to it. It truly is one of the best investments you’ll ever make.

In Hoang Pham’s travel guides, he brings you to Asia, one of his favorite travel destinations. He provides ideas of how to get the most out of your travel in your designated country. The guide covers accommodation, transport, what to eat, what to do and what to experience and sums this up with a bucket list.

Unlike other travel guides, his content gives a more personal opinion of what he can recommend in a country.

Next to being a traveler by heart, he loves to talk about entrepreneurship and startup companies. In his traveling, he’s always looking to experience the food, culture and the language of the destination he visits.

Since Asia is his weakness, he is trying to get more people to travel to all different countries in Asia through his short but extensive travel guides.

If you’re traveling to Asia soon and want to find out what’s out there, scroll down and check out his travel guides.

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

Our tour, hosted by Hoi An Express, was wonderful, 10 days we will never forget. We felt well-cared for every step of the way, from the morning we were met at the airport in Ho Chi Minh City (at 1AM!) until we were dropped off at the Hanoi Airport ten days later. Each of our guides was friendly, fluent in English, and full of valuable and interesting information. Each day included one or more new and fascinating experiences. Our hotels ranged from satisfactory to very good. (We did not opt to upgrade our accommodations from the basic level.). All hotels felt safe. Our rooms, while sometimes a little rustic, were clean and well-supplied. Breakfasts also ranged from satisfactory to excellent. All hotels were well located to support our activities during the abundant free time included in the itinerary. We walked a lot with our hotel as a base. Transportation via Grab was also easy and economical. Our tour group ranged in size from three people (for most of the tour) to five (during the middle part of the tour) to 20 for the Halong Bay overnight cruise. These travelmates added greatly to the overall experience. We enjoyed new friendships. When we plan a future Asian tour, I will start by checking out TourRadar and Hoi An Express. They worked very, very well for us.

Excellent tour. Very well arranged and everything was taken care of. At our age, it was hectic and a bit tiring , but we thoroughly enjoyed. If you can afford, take the flight option for travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap.

Vielen Dank.

Our tour leader, Ant was such a star. she tried to ensure that we were all happy at all times and there was never a logistical issue. there was a great mix of organised activities and enough free time. ant always had excellent ideas for optional activities. Ant always suggested great restaurants, which often ended up being our favourite places. the long distance public buses were unpleasant mainly due to the drivers and the weather and should be changed to private coaches. Will definately recommend this tour to everyone i know.

Vanezza, what an incredible person. Someone who never switched off 24/7 for the 17days, she would stay up all night to make sure people got home to then wake up for early activities. If anyone ever needed anything she would be right on it finding the answer! Not only a tour guide, but someone I would value as a friend! Always up for a laugh and pushing people to get the best experience and memories which would last a lifetime! She made the tour!

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days Tour

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days

As a first time solo-traveler, I knew I would need both a knowledgeable guide and a group of like-minded individuals all to help overcome the stresses and obstacles that come with traveling (I.e. language barriers, transportation, cultural norms etc.). I am elated to say that One Life Adventures provides for these needs and so much more! The Japan 10-Day tour provides a greatest hits of what the country has to offer in ways of sights, food, experiences, history and culture, making it an ideal opportunity for a first trip to Japan. On top of organizing a diverse itinerary, the coordinator will hook you and your group up with hospitable and convenient accommodations, access to local transportation methods, and an endless list of recommendations for food and drink. They also incorporate stints of free time each day for you to choose your own adventure! I personally did loads of souvenir shopping and photo scavenger hunts around the locations. But even with all the free time made available, there’s still plenty left to experience. A recommendation I would make to travelers considering this tour would be to prioritize your bucket-list items by time-sensitive or must-see events/experiences, and leave the remaining ones for a follow-up trip. The 10-day tour is both filled-to-the-brim AND fast paced, meaning the remaining free time each day is limited to under 3-hours. This doesn’t sound like a wholly bad thing, but that limited amount of free time leaves adventurous travelers like myself who want to maximize their time abroad with additional stops and experiences feel stretched thin. I would also suggest researching the itinerary and locations in advance so you know what you are getting into at each stop. Many cities along the tour offer similar experiences and stores, so don’t feel like you need to visit every brand-name shopping center or gift shop to find a particular thing: this will leave you unnecessarily burnt out. Finally, one piece of advice our tour operator gave us was to “embrace the cringe.” This means to recognize the many quirks and eccentricities of the local culture, and view them objectively without any undue criticism. I love this idea, as it helped me open up to many new sights and experiences. But I would also like to add to that phrase to say “but don’t be the cringe.” What I mean is to be respectful to the locals and the culture, and to make an effort to assimilate and immerse yourself into their norms. For example, make an effort to practice the local language without forcing the locals bend over backwards to accommodate you. Similarly, pay attention to how everyone around you behaves in public and match their mannerisms; this will help you blend in and seem less suspicious. The more we embrace a local culture as foreigners, the more the locals will welcome foreign travelers. Everyone who is on the fence in planning their vacation to Japan, or otherwise feels overwhelmed in planning the itinerary, this tour is the perfect option. Just remember the suggestions and recommendations, and you’ll be in for an adventure of a lifetime!

What people love about Asia Tours

This tour gives and opportunity to travel by many types of vehicles for sight seeing. Accommodations are varied from hotels to resorts including spending night on raft-house or houseboat on river. The tour is well planned and conducted by efficient tour Chief Experience Officers (CEOs). Wish that the information on Optional Tours were more detailed in the brochures of descriptions of the tour.
This was my first time ever travelling without family and it was amazing! One of the best months of my life. Our CEO Tong was brilliant and full of knowledge about where we were going and what we would be doing. He made sure to have enough time for anyone and helped in anyway he could to make things run smoothly for everyone on tour including myself. If you go on this tour, make sure you ask for Tong or (Phanet Tep) as your CEO!
Was a great experience! Thank you

Asia Tours & Travel Guide

Asia Attractions & Landmarks Guide

By far the world’s largest continent, Asia is as diverse as it is large. China, Siberia, Nepal and Jordan are all parts of Asia, as are Sri Lanka, Iran, Mongolia and Dubai. So a trip to Asia can encompass many regions, cultures, religions – and decisions.

Given its size and breadth, taking a guided tour can be an efficient way to experience a taste of Asia. From Indonesia to India to Israel, Asia is varied, intriguing, and endlessly fascinating - it's difficult to know where to start.

Countries are in Asia

Asia is the largest continent on earth covering 30% of the world’s land. Asia is also home to 60% of humankind. The Asian continent stretches all the way from Japan in the east to Israel in the west, Indonesia in the south to Russia in the north. It includes every type of landscape and all levels of climate. However, grouping together parts of Asia can help keep it straight.

Asia is generally broken down into five different regions : Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western Asia. Central Asia includes the countries around Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; East Asia includes the countries near China and Korea, South Asia is the Indian Subcontinent and Afghanistan, Southeast Asia includes the tropical countries near Thailand and Indonesia, and Western Asia is Turkey and the region of the Middle East .

When looking for a tour to Asia, figuring out which region you want to visit should be your first option as traveling between regions of Asia can take a great deal of time and money.

Southeast Asia Tours

Likely the region of Asia that most people think of when they start looking for tours is Southeast Asia. With countries including Thailand , Indonesia , Malaysia , Vietnam , and Cambodia , this is one region that attracts all.

Southeast Asia itineraries are full of stunning landscapes, historic temples, bustling cities, and laid back beaches. In each of these countries you will be able to find a wide variety of activities to enjoy like shopping through the floating markets of Vietnam, walking the hallowed temples of Angkor Wat , or enjoying a smoothie bowl in Bali.

While visiting Southeast Asia can be a nice reprieve from the harsh winters of Europe and North America, make sure to visit when the weather is good. Southeast Asia can get extremely warm and most of the countries have monsoon seasons that you’ll want to avoid

Top Cities in Asia

Each city in Asia is extremely different and has its own flavor to it. Cities in Saudi Arabia and Turkey are very different than cities in Vietnam and the Philippines. But these major hubs are often included on Asian guided tours in their own regions.

1. Bangkok, Thailand

Considered one of the hubs for not only Southeast Asia but all of Asia, Bangkok is a wondrous combination of traditional Thai history, Asian culture, and modern life. Bangkok is steeped in royal Thai architecture with modern malls and business hubs and is a backpacker hub.

2. Moscow, Russia

Heading to the far northern part of Asia, Moscow stands as a reminder of Imperial Russia’s former power. With its central Red Square with the Kremlin and uniquely designed St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow is a time capsule of Communist and Imperial rule.

3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Like many cities in Asia, Dubai originally was a small settlement and now has become a major business hub. Centered in the oil region of Asia, Dubai has grown to be an outpost for many of the world’s top companies, hotel chains, and high end products.

4. Udaipur, India

“India’s Venice” is one of the jewels of India’s northern region of Rajasthan with its combination of India life and European feel. While this region is known for its stunning forts and architecture, Udaipur stands out with its white buildings and canals centered around Lake Pichola.

Outdoor Travel in Asia

Asia’s landscape ranges from quite river valleys in Vietnam to the towering Himalayan Mountains in Nepal. Asia is one of the best places to get out and see Mother Nature at her finest.

For those looking for an adventurous holiday, there are many hiking and trekking tours to Asia . Nepal and Bhutan have some of the best outdoor and rigorous treks you can imagine and Japan is known for cycling as well.

Even if you aren’t going on full hiking or trekking adventures in Asia, your tour may still be considered strenuous. Many Asian countries are mountainous and some of the best sites, like the Great Wall of China, are built over the mountains and the steps are very steep. When looking into Asia tour operators double check the physical level and itinerary.

If you are looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience, you can check out Asian river cruises as they will take you into parts of Asia that are less developed and more connected with nature.

While there are some wildlife tours in Asia , much of the animals in Asia you will be able to see on normal tours. The most common animal you will see when traveling Asia, especially South and Southeast Asia, will be monkeys. Additionally, there are Asia wildlife tours to countries like Borneo that include trekking and encountering wildlife like orangutans.

Asia Cuisine

You can find any type of cuisine in Asia. With so many countries and different vegetation, Asia has a wide variety of food to choose from. This being said, Asia’s cuisine is tied to the different regions and countries. There are many similarities between some cuisines, but the produce and food is determined by the country.

In Central Asia you will find heartier dishes with meat and dairy. Much of this area has a similar cuisine to Russia with stews, stuffed breads, and Arabian flavors.

In Western Asia you’ll find a combination of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavors as many of these countries sit on the Mediterranean Sea . Tahini, falafel, lamb, and hummus are commonly found in dishes in this region. This area of Asia is also based off of meze, or small dish meals.

South Asia has a large vegetarian feel as India and Sri Lanka are mostly Hindu and Hindus do not eat meat. However, cuisines of Nepal and Afghanistan use lamb and goat. Recipes of this region use strong chillies, coriander, cloves, and ghee in their dishes. Also, many of their meals are eaten with forks and spoons, but with roti or chapati (unleaved flatbread).

Southeast Asia is where you will find many of your curries, rice dishes, and fresh fruit. This area of Asia is often associated with East Asian cuisines, but has its own distinct flavor. These cuisines use soy sauces and spices of turmeric and lemon grass.

Eastern Asia dishes are based off of oils and soups along with noodles and rice. Fish sauce, fermented vegetables, dumplings, and sushi can all be found in dishes in East Asia.

River Cruises in Asia

A great option to see Southeast Asia, but the other Asian countries as well, is by river cruise. Many of the world's most famous rivers run through Asia including the Mekong and the Yangtze.

Mekong River cruises make their way through multiple countries in Southeast Asia. The river winds itself through Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Mekong River itineraries make sure to include stops of major sites on the river like Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City, while also taking you out into the backwaters of the Mekong River.

To see some of the best sites in China, a Yangtze River cruise is ideal. A Yangtze River cruise takes you through the famous Three Gorges where three large gorges converge on the river with stops at “The White Emperor City” and “The Ghost City.”

For travelers with disabilities or who have trouble getting around, note that Asian river cruises use smaller boats and dock at ports that are not at the same standards as European river cruises.

The Ancient Silk Route

Much of  Russia  – from the Ural Mountains to eastern Siberia – lies in Asia, as does Mongolia, land of yurts and horsemen. Central Asia is a vast expanse of “stans”: Uzbekistan’s Samarkand, Bukhara and Tashkent were pillars along the old nomadic Silk Route from China. The ancient Babylonian and Persian empires live on in modern-day Iraq and Iran – an option for adventurous travelers. Parts of the Middle East are also troubled, though the United Arab Emirates – with its star attraction, Dubai -- and some other areas of the exotic Arabian Peninsula still beckon (even Saudi Arabia is starting to open up to non-Islamic tourism).

Israel and Jordan are at peace, offering the opportunity to visit both ancient Jerusalem and nearby Petra, Jordan’s wondrous rock city. Much of Turkey lies in Asia as well – including the unique cave dwellings of Cappadocia and the beaches of the Turkish Riviera.

While a quick overview can barely scratch the surface of Asian travel, Stride can ease the confusion with our easy-to-use comparison tools. After sizing up our plentiful offerings of guided tours,  river cruises  and active vacation packages, you can then decide which Asian region is the best fit for you. And chances are you’ll want to return again and again to sample more of all the cultural and adventurous discoveries that Asia has in store.

Cultural Nuances in Asia

For travelers coming from North America or Europe, some culture shock may be experiences when traveling in Asia. The culture and way of life in many Asian countries are very different than in places like the U.S. Different values and traditions are followed in Asia that may not be as important or observed in other countries.

Honor and respect are extremely important in Asian cultures. “Saving face” or respecting someone is one of the most important things in Asia. Open confrontation, criticism, or disprecting elders are highly frowned upon. However, in certain countries like China, conversations about your income and family life are fair game as these topics are valued in Chinese culture.

Even if you are from New York or London, you will still feel like you are cramped in many Asian countries. With 60% of the world’s population in Asia, many of the major cities are overcrowded and you will not have personal space when visiting. Along with this, if you accidentally get bumped getting off your bus or train, don’t expect an apology as you may get in the U.S., personal space and accidental bumpings are just part of life in Asia.

One&Only Desaru Coast Review: Applaudable In Paradise

One&Only Desaru Coast Review: Applaudable In Paradise

James Want

For the last decade, the island of Langkawi has, almost single-handedly, showcased the very best of Malaysian oceanfront hospitality. However, the more accessible southern region is quietly emerging as a formidable bucket-list contender following the opening of One&Only Desaru Coast in 2019.

It was the last project Australian architect Kerry Hill – whose practice still designs AMAN properties – worked on before his passing, and in typical KHA style features minimalist structures with high ceilings, clad in dark timbers, that play with natural light. With just 45 suites, the hotel presents as a premium, private and seriously well-equipped resort for travellers looking to rip into the wide range of activities on offer or relax and recharge by the pool.

One&Only Desaru Coast

Where is One&Only Desaru Coast?

One&Only Desaru Coast is located in the southeastern region of Malaysia, on 128 acres of white-powder sands between lush jungle flora and the South China Sea. It is best accessed from Singapore given the frequency and quality of carriers servicing Changi. The property is also accessible from Kuala Lumpur, but it is a 4-5 hour drive (as opposed to 1.5-2 hours on a good run from Singapore).

We were collected in a plush One&Only Mercedes Benz van, with reclining seating and a basket of snacks for the journey. Guests are not required to leave the van to pass through customs, which makes the process painless, however, there can be lengthy waits at the border.

How’s the vibe?

One&Only Desaru Coast

The property is best enjoyed poolside, where you can look back at the structures and admire the cascading stairs and restrained design, fusing effortlessly into the natural landscape. Glimpses of Dior slides, Loewe totes, and the unmistakable texture of Patek’s ‘tropical’ rubber strap all provide valuable insight into the clientele, who travel mostly in couples and value privacy as much as you do.

Amble from the pool and through the grounds to the spa where you’ll find a zen oasis. Featuring a Monet-esque central pond, the word paradise comes to mind post-treatment as you recline on an ergonomic lounge overlooking a seaside golf course.

What are the rooms like?

One&Only Desaru Coast

It’s a palatial and private space, but I think overall convenience and comfort pays a price – especially at night when you need to navigate your way through the courtyard and to the bathroom half asleep. Interestingly, the rooms feel older than the public buildings, although that could be due to tired soft furnishings made from kitsch fabrics. There is fruit on arrival and a well-appointed mini-bar, although none of it is complimentary. The plunge pool, while a nice touch, feels cramped by the central courtyard’s daybed and the towering stone wall that surrounds it.

One&Only Desaru Coast

In theory, the bedroom and bathroom sliding doors would open to improve the flow between the separate structures but effective cooling requires them to stay shut, along with the regular doors, so despite being in the privacy of your suite you’re constantly opening and closing heavy doors to move from the bedroom to the bathroom. In reality, it’s rather frustrating.

Tell us about the activities then!

With a kaleidoscope of venues and activities on offer, it’s unlikely that you’ll spend much time in your room. We spent the majority of ours at three locations: Ember Beach Club, the One&Only Spa & Fitness Centre, and Club One, the resort’s sports and activity hub.

asian travel paradise reviews

Located a short buggy ride from the main property, Ember Beach Club is a striking venue with an open-plan dining and kitchen area overlooking two pools, pristine golden sands, and the ocean beyond. At least one day of your stay should be dedicated to making the most of Ember’s food and beverage offerings, followed by lazy poolside cocktails, book in hand. If you’re keen on stand-up paddle boarding or feel like taking a jetski out, you can indulge from the club, but I bet you’ll just order another drink and sink into your lounge for an afternoon kip.

Another short buggy ride from the main property is Club One, a modern sports hub with an exceptional kids club – fortunately, we left ours at home. The sports side of the club caters to pool, ping pong, foosball, basketball and even viral sensation, Teqball. However, the real highlight is tennis and its new cousin, padel. One&Only has built the first dedicated padel courts in Malaysia and offers an excellent introductory lesson to the game for couples. We enjoyed it so much that we went back for more the following day.

Your first hour of padel will do unthinkable things to your feet, thus a massage is mandatory. The One&Only Spa & Fitness Centre is the jewel in the One&Only Desaru Coast crown, and the treatments price list is reasonable for a hotel of this calibre – especially given the alignment with Augustinus Bader products. We opted for a couples Malay Serene Fusion massage, focusing on rhythmic strokes with deep pressure to “rejuvenate essence”, which began with a foot bath and ended with tea, in a robe and slippers, overlooking the championship Els Club golf course (also on offer to guests). It was a real highlight of our stay, made even more special by the serene setting.

Attached to the spa is the hotel’s palatial fitness centre, dripping in Technogym goodies. It is a seriously impressive and well-thought-out space that has had a lot of money poured into it – a far cry from the afterthought gyms so often bundled into resorts. We didn’t work out but we did partake in a Silat lesson, a Southeast Asian martial art I’d never heard of before my visit. Admittedly, I was questioning our decision to start as our teacher (a Silat master) introduced us to an elaborate dance. However, once he began to explain the movements, and how they were used to defend oneself, I was enthralled. A must if you’re interested in combat sports.

We’re feeling peckish: what’s for dinner?

There is an abundance of restaurants, dining experiences and bars at One&Only but all have room for improvement, which means no single meal was a standout during our stay. Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh heads up the menu at Ember Beach Club and with so many venues under his name, I’d be inclined to say he’s probably spread a little thin, as the menu contained some fantastic items but many others missed the mark in regards to flavour and execution. The highlight was a Malaysian wagyu ribeye with kampot pepper sauce and shallot jam that I would consider to be one of the best pieces of beef I’ve ever eaten, so good that I ordered it again the following day. Unfortunately, it was half as good, as were the accompanying dishes.

For our first dinner, we dined privately on the beachfront, with the menu prepared on an open grill. It was an amazing location with tasty dishes but the execution lacked the finesse no doubt required to justify the price. Shortly after Billecart was served the degustation began, and we were barely capable of drawing a breath while all seven courses were served in under 90 minutes.

The amount of food was astonishing – not small bites, but full plates of food – six mains served in rapid succession, followed by dessert. I’ve never felt so rushed during a meal and by course three we were stuffed, so much so we asked the chef to stop. We were also treated to a lovely breakfast on the beach, which was a much calmer, picnic-style affair, and would be my recommendation if you’re game for an early start to watch the sunrise.

Alternatively, breakfast (as well as lunch and dinner) is served in the Mediterranean-inspired Ambara restaurant. The selection is exceptional, with daily local specials accompanying exquisite pastries, Malaysian favourites, and Western choices. These highlights are unfortunately let down by mediocre coffee. We didn’t eat lunch or dinner in Ambara but the friendly chef cooked us his signature char kway teow for the car ride back to Singapore. It was superb.

On Saturday evening, which also happened to be my birthday, we dined at Hoshi, the property’s omakase restaurant. Guests can select from an eleven, fourteen or seventeen-course menu, with prices ranging from ~AU$180 to ~AU$428. The flavours, creativity, and presentation were world-class, pairing delicate seafood with the region’s freshest and finest ingredients. To finish I was presented with a cake, which we shared with other guests in the restaurant – it was a lovely, personal touch.

Hoshi was fantastic but it could have been even better with the right wine. Unfortunately, the wine selection across the hotel is extremely limited, and the menu is the same at each of the venues. Four choices of white wine and no cellar selection are insufficient for a hotel of this calibre, especially when the one you want to drink is sold out, along with your favourite tequila , despite being presented on the back bar. Strangely, the cocktails at Ember were delicious, but the signature cocktails at flagship Dusky Bar were awful – we even heard the group next to us complaining about theirs.

How was the service?

Always enthusiastic but requires some polish. The specialist service – from our padel coach and Silat instructor to the spa staff and chefs – was all exemplary, but there’s work to do to get the general staff to a complementary level. It’s not that the service isn’t delivered with a smile, it’s just often overzealous – removing plates from your table before you’ve finished – and also unsure, “I need to check”. I felt rushed by the waitstaff at many of the meals.

Any other expert tips/highlights of your stay?

We stayed in an ocean-facing suite but the rainforest suites at the other end of the property seemed more private. Padel! I now understand what all the hype is about. I think approaching a stay at One&Only Desaru Coast with a wellness mindset would be hugely beneficial, to make use of the fitness centre, the sports club, the infinity pool, the spa, and the Ernie Els golf course.

Final thoughts…

Whether you’re after a relaxing or action-packed getaway, One&Only Desaru Coast ticks a lot of boxes. It does, however, lack the finesse that is required to make it truly exceptional. Many of the shortfalls I’ve pointed out may be viewed as insignificant, but it’s the finer details that make a stay extraordinary. A refresh on soft furnishings and a focus on consistency and quality across the hotel’s food and beverage offering, with a refined level of service to match, would place it amongst the best hotels in Asia. Until then, it presents a pleasurable weekend escape from Singapore or a worthy alternative to Langkawi.
