Must-Sees - Baltic Sea

A Baltic Sea cruise taking in Russia, the Baltic states and Scandinavia provides an opportunity to go back in time to a Europe where royal and imperial families reigned over regions brimming with culture. This historical heritage can still be seen in all the area's major cities.

Must-Sees - Baltic Sea

The Essentials - Baltic Sea

Before setting off on a Baltic Sea cruise , discover some of the cultural traits of this region, with its blend of both Nordic and Slavic influences. Historic city centres and modern architecture, peaceful countryside and an ultra-connected society: tradition and modernity standing side-by-side.

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Walk around Stockholm's old town - Sweden

Located on Gamla Stan island by the water, Stockholm's old town is made up of typical narrow paved alleyways and buildings. This is the place people come to gauge the pulse of a stunning city as well as to visit its oldest cathedral and, of course, the royal palace . Although you can't go into all the 608 rooms this impressive building contains, you will still be charmed by the royal apartments in Baroque and Rococo style. Nearby, City Hall watches over the Swedish capital like a lighthouse. Each year, it hosts the banquet put on for the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

Take in Tallinn's medieval ambiance - Estonia

The Estonian capital is a lovely size and has managed to preserve its remarkable medieval centre . The upper town is also nice to visit with its watchtowers, squares and paved alleyways with old arches and its superb Russian Orthodox church dating from 1900. To continue enjoying your immersion in Tallinn 's past, there's nothing better than an Estonian folk performance.

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, the Venice of the North - Russia

Marvel at Saint Petersburg, "the Venice of the North" - Russia

Saint Petersburg is nicknamed the " Venice of the North " thanks to its many canals. One of the best ways to see the city's numerous palaces and castles (Stroganov, Anitchkov, etc.) that showcase its prosperity in past centuries is to go for a panoramic boat ride. Once back on land, the magic continues with visits to various unmissable landmarks like the splendid Yusupov Palace , St Isaac's Cathedral and the iconic Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood .

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

Wander around the galleries at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg - Russia

The architecture of the Hermitage building — one of the biggest museums in the world — is itself exceptional. From the outside, the green, white and gold facade, the columns and the huge pediments set the tone. Enter the buildings (Hermitage Theatre, Small Hermitage, Large Hermitage, New Hermitage, Winter Palace and General Staff Building) to find yourself in the lap of luxury, surrounded by magnificent decor. With huge staircases, colonnades, floors decked out in marble or sumptuous parquet, walls decorated with mouldings, gilding, mosaics, bas-reliefs, other paintings and more, almost 1,000 rooms are open to the public covering 66,000 square metres and showcasing over 60,000 works selected from the museum's 3-million-strong collection.

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Treat yourself to a tour through Finland's rural past

Although the Finnish capital offers plenty of charms, you can also take a more unusual trip to Seurasaari Island a few kilometres from the city centre. The ethnologist Axel Olai Heikel chose this green area as the site for no fewer than 85 buildings (houses, farms, windmill, cafe and shop). Gathered from all over the country, put back up on the island and authentically decorated, these buildings provide an insight into everyday Finnish life between the 12th century and the start of the 20th century.

Découvrir Riga, entre terre et canaux - Lettonie

Explore Riga on land and on the canals - Latvia

Take a guided boat tour on the Daugava River snaking through Riga to get an initial impression of the city, its tower-filled historic centre, its castle, its landmarks and its parks. If you want more from your visit to the Latvian capital, there's nothing better than walking around the city centre next. Riga Cathedral is worth a detour with its impressive 6,700-pipe organ. In Town Hall Square, St Peter's Church with its bell tower and the House of the Blackheads are worth a visit.

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

Wander round Copenhagen - Denmark

The best-known thing about Copenhagen tends to be its iconic little mermaid statue. Yet, the Danish capital often surprises visitors. There are lovely walks to be had through the pedestrian city-centre streets with their designer boutiques, art galleries, cafes and tea rooms. The solemn royal Amalienborg Palace , the jubilant Tivoli Gardens and the quiet Nyhavn waterfront confirm that Copenhagen is a multi-faceted and lively city that makes a great stopover destination.

Dos. In the Baltic countries, whether it's Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia, people represent numbers using only the fingers and not the thumb. "One" is indicated with the index finger, "two" with the middle finger, etc. Don'ts. In Russia and the Baltic countries, shaking hands with one person on one side of a porch and the other person on the other side is said to bring bad luck, as does the act of remaining standing in a doorway. Both parties must be on the same side of the entrance when greeting each other. In Finland, people never interrupt each other: each person speaks in turn.

Unique features

Along the Baltic coast, whether in Russia, Finland or the Baltic countries, ice bathing is a strongly anchored tradition. Hailed for its beneficial effects on blood circulation and in strengthening the immune system, it's an activity that has to be prepared for properly. In Russia, those who take part in the practice are nicknamed morji (walruses).

Essential phrases

baltic cruise august

Inhabitants of the Nordic countries, from Canada to Finland, are particularly fond of a small berry that grows in peat bogs close to marshes, especially in Lapland: the cloudberry , or lakka . These small yellow fruits picked in summer and rich in vitamin C are preserved for winter and used to make delicious tarts, jams, cordials and liqueurs.

Myths & legends

Amber , treasure of the Baltic Sea, has inspired many legends. According to traditional stories and tales, these translucent pearls of pine resin symbolise the tears of Jūratė, goddess of the mermaids and fiancée of Potrimpo, god of the sea, and the shards of her underwater amber palace. The goddess incurred the wrath of the gods by falling for the charms of the brave fisherman Kastytis, and to punish her, Perkūnas, the god of thunder and the sky, killed her lover and struck down her palace and Potrimpo chained her to the ruins forever.

In the spotlight

Estonia is one of the most digitally cutting edge countries in the world and also the birthplace of Skype. It even sometimes referred to as E-stonia , which is the nickname that's been given to this little nation that has become a paradise for startups . Having e-resident status in Estonia allows digital entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world to domicile their companies in the country and enjoy the benefits of both an advantageous tax system and access to the European market, all managed remotely. With the exception of marriages, divorces and property purchases, all administrative processes in the country are carried out online and more than 90 percent of the population have electronic ID cards.

Books. In The Man Who Spoke Snakish (Grove Press Atlantic, 2015), winner of the French prix de l'imaginaire 2014 in the foreign novel category, the Estonian author Andrus Kivirähk evokes the world of the ancestors and casts a discerning eye over the present by immersing the reader in a phantasmagorical universe populated with mythical creatures and featuring dialogues between humans and animals.

Music. The kantele , a kind of traditional five-stringed zither and a national symbol in Finland, though it's also found in Russia and the Baltic countries too, was once used to accompany both the songs of bards and poets and traditional folk dancing. The delicate sounds of this sacred instrument served to intensify the romanticism of the national narrative in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The repertoire associated with it has broadened and expanded since its introduction into the school and conservatory curriculums in the 1970s and 80s.

Film. Actor, director and producer Aki Kaurismäki is one of the iconic figures of European arthouse cinema. Influenced by the French New Wave and cinema burlesque, this Finnish artist uses depictions of marginalised or quirky and off-the-wall characters in his films to paint a poetic and melancholic picture of fragile societies. He has shot several films in France, including La Vie de Bohème (1992) and Le Havre (2011). The Man Without a Past (2002) and The Other Side of Hope (2017) were respectively awarded a Grand Prix at Cannes and a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Facts and figures

A typical Baltic cruise itinerary would be either a week or two weeks long. There are frequent Baltic cruises from the UK most of which are two weeks long and visit ports along the baltic sea before visiting Russia and then returning.

It is possible to take a Baltic cruise which doesn’t visit the UK, these tend to be shorter and may start at somewhere like Copenhagen or Amsterdam.

Baltic Cruise StockHolm Cruise Tips

Prepare to be Busy!

Baltic cruises are very port intensive and will visit a new port almost every day. In a 14-night Baltic cruise you may have 2/3 sea days but generally speaking, as the countries are quite close together you won’t have a prolonged time at sea. Baltic cruises provide passengers with the opportunity to visit multiple countries in a relatively short period of time. During a 14-night Baltic cruise, it is possible to visit 8 or so different countries. If you were to try to replicate this type of trip on land it would be very expensive and very time-consuming.

Overnight Stays Are Common

It is very popular for a baltic cruise to include an overnight stay at some point of the cruise. The most popular place for this to happen is many cruises in St Petersburg where most cruise ships will dock overnight. When I visited St Petersburg we were docked with 8 other cruise ships! St Petersburg is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world.

The overnight stay meant that we were able to go on excursions on both days. It is worth checking that the times of your stay allow this though as I recently took another cruise which featured ‘two days in Amsterdam’ it docked at 3 pm and left at 10 am the next day!

Which Currencies do You Need For a Baltic Cruise?

Countries on a Baltic cruise take British Pounds, Danish Krona, Euros, Russian Rubles and many more. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, especially in cruise ports so it may be worth putting the majority of purchases on a card.

I have been on full cruises and never once needed to use cash.

Baltic cruises visit multiple countries, many of which have their own currencies. I wouldn’t suggest that you keep withdrawing and exchanging currencies because not only is this time consuming but you can also lose quite a bit of money if the exchange rates aren’t favourable.

In some places, countries which don’t have the Euro currency will take Euros as an alternative. Many of the countries visited on a Baltic cruise take Euros so I would recommend that you do take some cash in the form of Euros and use a credit or debit card in the other countries. It’s always important to have some small coins (Euros are usually fine) for things like public toilets.

In a lot of Europe, there is a charge to use public toilets so it’s always better to keep a few Euro coins in your purse. An alternative, of course, is to find a McDonalds or Starbucks where you’ll almost always find a toilet that you can use for free.

If you do decide to take cash, make sure you read this guide which takes you through everything you may need to budget for, some of these you may not even consider so do make sure you have a read: How Much Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise? Budgeting Guide

When is The Best Time to Take a Baltic Cruise?

The best time to take a Baltic cruise is in July and August. May, June, September and October are also fairly popular. Winter months are generally less desirable because the weather is poor but cruises do still cruise the Baltics year-round.

July and August are the most expensive months with cruises out of this season being considerably cheaper.

In the summer months of July and August, there will be the greatest number of cruise lines sailing the Baltics. This does mean that passengers have more choice of who to sail with but it can also mean that the cruise ports are busy. It isn’t uncommon for 3 or 4 cruise ships to dock in the same place at the same time.

What Is The Weather Like on a Baltic Cruise?

The weather on a Baltic cruise is generally mild. In summer temperatures may rise in places to 80f and in winter temperatures can drop to 30f. Rain is a common year-round.

There is no guarantee of good weather even in the summer months. If you really do care about having warm sunny weather the Mediterranean or Canary Islands may be a better option for you than the Baltics. That said, you could get lucky!

I’ve been on two Baltic cruises and both times we had rain almost every day. I took a two week Marella cruise to the Baltics in 2018 and although we travelled in September we had some really bad weather. That said, we had some really lovely weather too! On a few days of the cruise, I did manage to sit out on the balcony and try to do a little bit of sunbathing. It wasn’t really ever ‘hot’ but compared to the UK where I live it did feel warm!

We visited Tallinn in Estonia which was brilliant, we took a bike tour and it rained constantly. We were soaked through and the ink genuinely came off of my socks and dyed my feet funny colours. That said, we had an amazing time and it was brilliant. My coat and Cardigan in the photo below aren’t usually that colour, they’re soaked. I particularly like the people in the rain ponchos in the background, I think that says a lot.

What should you pack for a Baltic cruise?

On a baltic cruise you should pack the following:

  • A waterproof coat
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Clothing essentials
  • Any medicines needed
  • Passport/Documentation/VISAs
  • Travel adapters

The most important things you can pack for a Baltic cruise are a good comfortable pair of walking shoes and a coat. Regardless of the time of year that you visit the Baltics, you may get rain so it’s much better to be prepared. Pack clothes which you find comfortable as you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking.

Clothing Essentials

As far as clothes go I’d recommend you start by packing more underwear than the number of days that you’re away, I always do this. I’m not too sure why but it’s better to be safe than sorry! It’s also a good idea to bring travel wash so that you can wash some little items in the sink if you are running low on clothes. Cruise ships do have laundries but these can be expensive and it’s usually easier if you just want to wash a few small items, to do so in the sink.

For a 14 night cruise, I always try to pack in the region of 10 t-shirts/shirts/blouses, 4 jeans/trousers, 4 shorts (if warm), 6-day dresses (if warm), 6 evening dresses, 3 hoodies/sweaters/jumpers, 2 smaller cardigans/cover-ups, 3 skirts, 2 pairs of tights/leggings, 1 swimwear, 1 pyjamas, 2x gym wear.

Lots of Shoes

When it comes to shoes the most important thing is to pack shoes that are comfortable. I’d recommend at least one or possibly two pairs of sneakers/trainers/walking boots, during my baltic cruise I got so wet that on occasion it took my shoe days to dry. Having another pair that you can change into is always a good idea.

I’d also recommend you pack another pair of flat shoes for daily walking around the ship or in port. I usually bring a pair of lightweight (cheap) sneakers as a backup!

Packing a pair of heels or similar for evenings onboard is usually a good idea. Most cruise lines have some form of formal nights and having at least one, or maybe two pairs of ‘nice’ shoes to wear is always good.

If you are going to be travelling in summer I’d recommend that you bring some sandals or flip flops. It may be worth packing 2 or so pairs so that you can alternate if needed. As far as walking goes I’d say that baltic cruises are one of the most intensive. Of course, you don’t have to do any walking if you don’t want to but most countries visited on baltic cruises are so easy to explore by foot that it would be a shame not to if you are able. Keep this in mind during all of your packing. Don’t think ‘hmm, I haven’t worn this for 5 years but this cruise might be a perfect time’. It probably isn’t, there’s a reason you haven’t worn the clothes lately.

Other Must-Haves

In addition to your coat, it’s probably a good idea to pack a small umbrella. It might sound strange that I’m telling you to pack an umbrella and I’m now going to tell you to pack sunscreen but trust me, you might need that too! The Baltics provides extremes of all-weather and it can change with very little warning. In Tallinn in Estonia, it rains roughly every 3 days even in the summer season.

As far as cruise essentials go make sure that you pack things like your passport, travel documents, luggage tags, travel adapters, phone, camera, credit/debit card, chargers, medicines and toiletries! You’ll find more packing information in my cruise course which teaches you how I make sure that I’m always the person on the cruise who’s paid the least: Start Now.

What Should You Do in Baltic Cruise Ports?

Of course, the activities offered do vary by cruise ports but there are some things which you are able to do in almost all Baltic cruise ports. Russia is the only country on a Baltic cruise which requires a special visa which means that you are unable to ‘DIY’ an excursion.

Hop-on Hop-Off Bus

In almost all ports on a baltic cruise, you’ll find Hop on Hop Off buses. I’m personally a big fan of Hop on Hop Off buses because they provide you with everything that you need for a day of exploring. When you cruise you will usually only have one day in port so it’s important to make the most of it.

A daily Hop on Hop off bus ticket usually costs around $40/£30 and this is a 24-hour ticket. 48 hour and 72-hour tickets are usually available for longer stays.

Hop on Hop Off buses allow you to explore a city on set routes. Most Hop on Hop Off bus providers will have a couple of routes and these are usually either named by colours or letters. The best part about Hop on Hop Off buses is that you can join the bus for any parts of the journey you want and repeatedly get on/off the bus.

The buses usually have commentary in multiple languages so that you can learn some facts about the place that you are visiting. I did this in Stockholm and learnt that Stockholm translates to ‘log island’. Fun fact!

stockholm hop on hop off bus cruise tips

Walking Tours

There are usually walking tours you can join in most countries in the Baltic cities. Some have a charge and some are free, on the free tours, you are usually expected to give a tip, which makes sense. An alternative is to download a walking tour of your phone. If you’re from the UK or most of Europe you can use your internet on your phone in most European countries at no extra cost. If you are from elsewhere you can usually download the walking tour ahead of time.

Make sure you do bring those comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes. During a Baltic cruise, it isn’t uncommon for me to walk 20,000 steps per day, my record is 33,000!

Walking is one of my favourite ways to stay healthy on a cruise, many people worry about putting on weight on a cruise but to be honest I genuinely feel as though I come back healthier! To find out the little things I do that make a big difference, check out this post:

Avoid Cruise Ship Weight Gain – 7 Easy Things You Can Do

Use Public Transport

Most countries visited on a Baltic cruise have relatively cheap and easy to use public transport systems. If there is a particular thing you want to see or do it’s usually possible to buy a bus or train ticket and make your own way to the attraction. You really do see the country that you’re visiting when you travel on public transport, I much prefer it to sit on a coach with other British people.

It’s usually a good idea to bring some cash for things like public transport although this isn’t necessary for most places. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most ports. Booking attractions ahead of time can also save you money so it is worth considering this.

Gothenburg Cruise Bus Baltic Cruise Tips

Cruise Line Excursions

If there is something in particular you would like to do it might be worth considering a cruise line excursion. Cruise line excursions can be quite expensive but they are often the easiest way to explore a place. Most cruise line excursions are based, at least in some parts, on coaches. Groups will usually be of at least 20+ passengers and you might end up following a tour guide around with a flag on a stick.

If you are visiting St Petersburg you either have to take a ship organised excursion or an excursion with an independent provider. Due to the visas needed in St Petersburg you can’t ‘DIY’ your day as much as in other ports. During my Marella Baltic cruise, we took two St Petersburg excursions.

Independent Excursions

Another option is to take independent excursions with other companies. These are often much cheaper than booking through the cruise line but it does take a bit more organisation. There are lots and lots of companies in the Baltics which provide independent excursions. The main downside of booking excursions independently is if your cruise port is cancelled you won’t get your money back. To learn more about what happens when itineraries are changed, and this happens a LOT, check out this post:  Do You Get Compensation For Missed Cruise Ports?

For independent excursions in Russia I personally recommend Alla Tours as an alternative to a cruise line excursion. Alla Tours organise all visas for their guests and the trips are often much cheaper and more personal than cruise line excursions.

Which Cruise Line’s Are Best For a Baltic Cruise?

Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises , Royal Caribbean, P&O, Marella and MSC are good options for Baltic cruises. They offer itineraries in a variety of lengths starting and ending in multiple countries.

There are a number of luxury cruise lines who also cruise the Baltics which usually offer smaller less well-known cruise ports. Azamara, Silversea, Oceana and Seabourn are just a few of the cruise lines that cruise this route.

Choosing a cruise line can be a very confusing process, there are so many things to consider. Dress codes, dining, entertainment and more. To help you to find the perfect cruise line for you, I’ve put together this video:

To learn about a specific cruise line check out our full recommended cruise lines post. In this post I talk about the positives and negatives of each cruise line in addition to who their typical passengers are and what the experience onboard is like day to day:

Where To Next?

There is not a lot that I love more than going on a cruise, meeting new friends and realising that I paid considerably less than everybody else for the exact same cruise.

Finding and booking a cruise is no easy task. I’ve been able to cruise for as little as $50 per night and I regularly save over 75% compared to advertised brochure prices.  You can do it too!

baltic cruise august

Nowadays Rotterdam is a vital part of the economy of the Netherlands. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in the world with a total throughput of about 300 million metric tons a year provides a solid base for industry in and around the Rotterdam area. Its population is about 575000, which makes it one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, but the number of people that work in the Rotterdam area or are otherwise economically dependent of it exceeds that number by far. The density of population is among the highest in the Netherlands, exceeding 4000 per square kilometer. Shipping, storage and forwarding are of course among the most important activities in the region, but the port of Rotterdam has also created a large chemical industry, which is fully dependent upon the transport facilities for the inflow of crude oil and the shipping of the various refined end products. Large petrochemical plants have sprung up, especially on the south bank of the Maas. These plants are in operation 24 hours a day. The development of Europoort ('Euro gate') started in 1957. A large complex of ports and industrial areas was created between Rotterdam and the entry to the North Sea. When more space was needed, the Maasvlakte ('Maas Flats') was created. By means of dikes, dams and sand deposits the coast line was altered to include many square kilometers of newly created land, where the Petroleum Harbors, container terminals, ore terminals and the Maasvlakte power plant are located. An interesting feature is the 'disaster area', a training complex where fire brigades train to cope with large-scale industrial accidents. The complex includes a grounded tanker that is set on fire several times a day. The name Europoort suggests that Rotterdam wanted to become the gateway to Europe. By 1963 this suggestion had become outdated, because in that year Rotterdam could claim to be the largest port in the world, a record that it still holds. In fact, the Berge Stahl, a 365000 ton ore carrier, is fully dependent on the port of Rotterdam, since this is the only port on the European continent that this ship (with its 23m/75ft draught) can access. After the flood in 1953 a large project was initiated to prevent such floodings in the future. This project, the 'Delta plan', involved stronger and higher dikes and numerous flood barriers. The latest of those flood barriers to be completed was the storm surge barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg near Hoek van Holland. Two enormous doors mounted on swing arms can be used to close off the Nieuwe Waterweg, should storm and high water require so in order to protect the country from flooding. Normally the doors are open, so as not to impede the flow of ships through the Nieuwe Waterweg. Building and development have become a way of life for Rotterdam. The city has continued to grow, and it shows no signs of slowing down. And although this constant increase of population, urbanization and development all breed their own problems, Rotterdam is ready for the next millennium. As the economic heart of the Netherlands, with a population heading towards 600000, it had better be ready.

Situated at the head of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the oldest Scandinavian capital, and features a charming mix of old and new architecture, together with acclaimed museums, parks and monuments, making it a relaxing and rewarding holiday destination. The highlight of a visit to Oslo is the 13th century medieval Akershus Fortress, featuring creepy dungeons with dark, damp cells, magnificent banquet halls and ornate staterooms, and a charming chapel which contains the crypts of King Hĺkon VII and Olav V. It was used by the Nazis during WW II as a prison and place of execution but is now occupied by the Norway Resistance Museum, which has a variety of exhibits of Norwegian life under German occupation. The grounds surrounding the fortress are perfect for picnics and relaxation, and afford spectacular views of the city and harbor. Norway is famous for its artists, and two of them are celebrated in museums in Oslo. The Munch Museum contains a collection of more than 5000 drawings and paintings by Norway's most famous artist. Munch's most famous painting, The Scream, resides in the National Gallery. Nearby, Vigeland Museum and Park showcases the works of the renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland amid a beautiful expanse of trees, grass, and ponds. Another artistic attraction is the National Theatre, with its superb rococo hall. Oslo has plenty of luxurious accommodations, excellent restaurants and charming cafes. The nightlife is numerous and varied, with bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. A rewarding excursion can be made to the nearby Bygdřy Peninsula, located across the harbour from Oslo. It features a large open-air folk museum, maritime museums housing excavated Viking ships and Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft Kon-Tiki; restored stave churches; and some pretty beaches. Further afield is the Nordmarka, a wilderness area on Oslo's northern border, and the quaint fishing village of Risor, with its picturesque harbour and island of Stangholmen. International airlines link Oslo with most major European cities, and transportation options into the city are numerous and reliable

The waters of the Oslofjord to the south and the forested hills of the Nordmarka inland to the north are immensely popular for everything from boating and hiking to skiing, and on all but the shortest of stays there's ample opportunity to join in. The island beaches just offshore in the Oslofjord and the open forest and ski jumps at Holmenkollen are obvious targets, both within easy reach by ferry or underground train. Oslo curves round the northernmost point of the Oslofjord, which extends for some 100km from the Skagerrak, the choppy channel separating Norway and Sweden from Denmark. As Norwegian fjords go, Oslofjord is not particularly beautiful, but amongst a string of workaday industrial settlements is Norway's only surviving fortified town, Fredrikstad, with its angular bastions and grid-iron of late sixteenth-century streets; it's best visited as a day-trip by train from the capital. Situated in the middle of the Jutland peninsula, Aarhus is the second biggest city in Denmark. Founded over 1,000 years ago as a Viking settlement at the mouth of the river, the town first began developing in approximately 1900, when industrial growth attracted rural populations. The population of Aarhus has almost doubled since 1935 and is still growing, although rather more slowly than in recent decades. Today, 'The Smallest Big City in Denmark' is full of excitement and adventure brimming over with music and dancing, theatre and opera, a wealth of museums, and much more. Visitors come to luxuriate in the magnificent and sublime performances of the internationally renowned Wagner operas or visit the more "alternative" entertainment venues rich in atmosphere and excitement. As the capital of the provinces, it has all the atmosphere of a big city. In addition to the smart, seductive cultural events that take place all the year round, refreshing green woods and sunlit beaches are within easy reach, providing welcome respite from the thronging crowds and the mighty roar of traffic. Thanks to the relatively large population of younger inhabitants Aarhus has the feel of a "young" town. This follows naturally as Aarhus boasts many schools and educational institutions that attract young people from out-lying districts. However, many of them move away once their studies are completed. A notable centre of commerce, the Port of Aarhus is one of Denmark's largest harbours with a cargo-handling capacity of 11 million tonnes and 600,000 containers. With planned investment of an additional two billion Danish kroner over the next 25 years, future development plans include a doubling of the harbour's capacity.

The story of Tallinn is a tale of three cities: an ancient citadel, the old town, and the modern city. Capital of the Estonian Republic, the coastal settlement is almost opposite Helsinki on the Gulf of Finland. The citadel, known as Toompea Castle, sits on a craggy hill peering down on a fascinating amalgam of medieval rooftops and winding cobbled streets, punctuated here and there by graceful spires and turreted towers. Around this ancient core, building continues constantly, and Tallinn today is the major industrial centre in Estonia. Tallinn is now the home of no less than six theatres and is famous throughout the Baltic for its song festivals, where massed choirs sing to packed audiences in a huge open-air stadium. Sailing, too, is an important recreation. Tallinn-made yachts are renowned, and in 1980 the city hosted the yachting events for Moscow's Olympics. Tallinn enjoys a mild climate, with summer 'white nights', when sunset blends into sunrise, rivalling those of St Petersburg.

'Beauty on Water' or 'Venice of the North' - these phrases sum up the Baltic allure of a city built on 14 islands in an archipelago of some 24,000. Founded by Birger Jarl in 1252, Stockholm owes its existence to water, developing as a transit point for goods moving between the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. A strategic and trade centre, the fortified town grew during the Middle Ages when it acquired much of its picturesque architecture. However, it only became the national capital in 1634, during the Thirty Years War, when Sweden was an imperial power. The Vasa monarchs left Stockholm with a Baroque magnificence that would grace a far grander setting than today's peaceful capital of a small Nordic nation: splendid palaces, gold and ironwork, dignified ceremonial and rich royal collections. Baroque monumental stucco blends beautifully with the colourful plastered walls of the medieval Old Town. The clear northern light falling across these surfaces, especially during the endless northern summer evenings, intensifies the freshness and cleanliness of even the most venerable districts. Modern Stockholm is a bustling business hub for the entire Baltic region yet anglers can still catch salmon in the centre of the city. Sweden was the envy of less dynamic economies during the 1960s and 1970s, with Stockholm a trading and commercial centre to be reckoned with, as anyone who has ever used an Ericsson mobile phone or an Ikea chair can testify. Swedish design genius, aesthetic and technical know-how, has ensured that many professionals in the creative and IT fields look to Stockholm for inspiration and partnership. Prosperous, efficient and well-scrubbed, Stockholm balances its economic vigour with a remarkably unspoilt natural charm. With 30% of the city area made up of waterways and another 30% parks and green spaces, it has perhaps the freshest air and widest lungs of any European capital. But it has nightlife and a restaurant culture that belie any impression of a quiet garden city; Stockholm has almost as many restaurants per capita as Paris and a night in the hotspots of Stureplan should be enough to satisfy even the most demanding clubber. Sweden is the world's third most successful exporter of pop music behind the United States and Britain, a process that began with Abba's global success in the 1970s. A good night out here can soon blow away any clichés about Nordic gloom. And Stockholm's 150 or so museums and galleries means there's plenty to do on rainy days. Light on water and pure air may be the strongest impression a visitor carries away from Stockholm, especially in the summer, but they might equally be thinking of a particularly rowdy night in the Pelikan Bar on Södermalm, or hot jazz in the Lydmar Hotel. The entire world may descend on Stockholm each December for the Nobel Prize ceremonies, but they arrive in the winter cold and darkness; the smiles of a summer night are far more inviting for the traveller.

Kiel, the "City of fresh air", has numerous faces. The time when it was a member in the Hanseatic League have shaped it as much as the Christian-Albrechts-Universität, the shipyards, the Kieler Woche festival, and the construction of the Kiel Canal. The location of the war harbour here also left its mark, as 80% of Kiel lay in ruins when World War II was over in 1945. The Nikolai Church, dating from 1242, in front of which Ernst Barlachs sculpture of the "Mind Warrior" keeps guard, is located at the Old Market. Only the grave of Kiels founder, Duke Adolf IV of Schauenburg, is preserved in the vault of the former Franciscan Monastery. Meanwhile, theres a colourful assembly of offices, boutiques and shops around the former market place. A few streets down, Kiels little red-light district with its clubs, fast food stalls, and "hotels" is starting up. Like most of these areas, the "Wall" is located right near the harbour, right across the street from the Maritime Museum, which has been set up in the old fish market hall. Past the radio and TV-station NDR, you arrive at the Castle which was unfortunately completely destroyed during the war. It has since been rebuilt with a modern concert hall in a sixties style. The City Hall, the Opera, and the Ministry of Justice rise up majestically alongside the two lakes referred to as Kleinen Kiel. Offering all kinds of shopping facilities, the Holstenstraße was Germanys first pedestrian precinct and was opened in 1951. It runs from the old Market, past the Asmus-Bremer Square, up to the train station and ends at the shopping centre Sophienhof. On the way, you will pass the Ostseehalle, Kiels largest hall for concerts, events and trade fairs, located on the Europaplatz (Europe Square) which has an interesting architecture. One month before Christmas the whole shopping area turns into a giant Christmas Market. Wooden huts, decorated with strings of candle like lights, offer a various selection of arts and crafts as well as culinary delights. The Bergstraße (English: Hill Street) offers a number of discos, pubs and clubs. Here you can party every night until 3 or 4am and afterwards enjoy Kiels best French Fries at the Aurette, an oily little food stall. The Bergstraße will lead you from the downtown area to the Dreiecksplatz (Triangle Square) where another popular shopping street, the Holtenauer Street, starts.

Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises: Which European itinerary should you choose?

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Europe has so much to offer by cruise ship that it can be a challenge to decide where to start. Should you choose a Baltic cruise versus a Mediterranean cruise for your sailing abroad? How do you decide?

A Mediterranean cruise is often the first dip into European waters many travelers take. It’s an easy choice because there are many options, including cruises to France, Spain and Italy on familiar big-ship cruise lines with reasonable prices and relatively easy flights. Mix ancient sightseeing and culinary sampling with a dash of beach time, all while surrounded by stunning blue seas, and you’ve got the essence of a summer cruise in the Med.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Baltic cruises are not about beach time, and most of the historical sights are anything but ancient. What you’ll find instead is incredible architecture, garden tours and deep dives into modern European history, as well as access to everything offered in some of Europe’s most vibrant cities in Germany, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. As with the Mediterranean, the region is rich with foods and beverages to taste. Think Danish pastries, German beer and Swedish meatballs.

Let’s look at what each of these two distinct European cruise choices offers to help you decide which one you’d like more.

Mediterranean vs. Baltic on the map

The Mediterranean Sea lies south of Europe, and though it’s connected to the Atlantic Ocean, it is almost entirely enclosed by the European, African and Asian continents. It comprises 11 smaller seas, which can confuse things when you shop for cruises; itineraries are sometimes labeled according to the smaller sea. In general, though, any ocean cruise with ports in Spain, France, Italy, Monaco, Greece or Turkey are Mediterranean cruises.

Eight northern European Union countries and Russia surround the Baltic Sea. It connects to the Atlantic via the North Sea at Denmark. Baltic cruises, particularly the longest itineraries, may begin or end outside the Baltic Sea itself, adding bonus countries to the itinerary. Countries most Baltic cruises visit include Denmark, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, plus Sweden and Finland. Longer cruises might also include Norway and United Kingdom countries outside the Baltic Sea.

Cruise itineraries

Mediterranean cruise itineraries generally are seven nights or longer. Peak season is summer, but it’s possible to find Mediterranean cruises during every month of the year. Summer daytime temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but can spike well into the 90s in July and August in some locations. Spring and fall cruises in the Med have more moderate weather.

You’ll find a wide range of choices of departure ports and countries your ship will visit. The most flexible departure ports in terms of what direction the cruise will take you are Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Athens (Piraeus) — all of which serve as departure or return ports for cruises in all directions across the Mediterranean.

Depart from Venice (Ravenna or Trieste) to sail to destinations along the Adriatic; in addition to Italy, your itinerary may include Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.

Because there are so many ports in the Mediterranean, sea days are generally limited to one per weeklong sailing, and many itineraries lack sea days entirely.

One-way itineraries that depart from one port and end in another are common in the Mediterranean, allowing your cruise to visit more ports in more countries than you might on a round-trip route. This can, however, complicate flight plans and may make flights more expensive than round-trip fares — something to pay attention to as you shop for your cruise.

The bonus of these one-way routes is that they are easily combined into longer cruises. A cruise that starts in Barcelona and ends in Athens can be combined with a second cruise from Athens to Istanbul or back to Barcelona. Some lines — such as Viking , Holland America , Princess , Windstar and Oceania — pre-package multiple one-way cruises to make the planning easy. On other lines, like Azamara , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian , you can book two (or more) cruises back-to-back to create your own extended voyage.

Lines that primarily offer round-trip cruises in the Mediterranean include Virgin Voyages , Celebrity and Carnival . Disney Cruise Line also offers round-trip itineraries, including some of the shortest cruises in the Med, with four- and five-night sailings during the line’s brief season there each summer.

Cruisers who count continents can check off three big ones with a carefully planned extended cruise in the region. One way to add Asia to your list is to spend time in Istanbul on both sides of the Bosphorus River, as it’s the dividing line between the continents. Alternatively, the Turkish ports of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Izmir are among those commonly visited in Asia.

Finding a Mediterranean itinerary that visits Africa can be a bit more challenging, but the ports to look for include Alexandria, Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Tunis, Tunisia. If you want to hit three continents in one voyage, look for 10- to 14-night itineraries on lines such as Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America.

Baltic cruise itineraries are also mostly seven nights or longer. Because the Baltic countries are farther north, chilly weather is possible even in mid-summer in the Baltic. Average high temperatures in Copenhagen, for example, are barely 70 degrees Fahrenheit during June, July and August. Helsinki is a degree or two cooler. Because of the climate, cruise ships only sail these waters from April through September.

Departure ports may be cities located on the Baltic, like Copenhagen, Stockholm or Warnemunde, Germany, or outside the Baltic, as in Southampton, England, or Amsterdam and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. As with Mediterranean cruises, you’ll find a mix of round-trip cruises beginning and ending in the same port city and one-way itineraries — many of which begin outside the Baltic Sea and end at a Baltic port.

The opportunity to create longer journeys by connecting multiple cruises is available in the Baltic. Those usually include Northern European or United Kingdom add-ons before or after your Baltic cruise. Think Stockholm to Edinburgh, Scotland. After a thorough cruise of the Baltic Sea, the itinerary might include multiple stops in the fjords of Norway before ending in the U.K. Baltic cruises that begin or end outside the confines of the Baltic Sea often have at least one day at sea, sometimes more.

Country counters rejoice! A solid itinerary within the Baltic can add eight countries to your list; add-ons in the North Sea will get you another handful if you plan carefully.

Prior to March 2022, Baltic cruises often included a stop in the Russian port of St. Petersburg. Currently, no cruise lines catering to Westerners call on Russian ports.

Ports of call

The list of ports of call in the Mediterranean is lengthy, ranging from European mainland ports like Dubrovnik, Zadar, Naples, Nice and Istanbul to popular ports on the islands of Sardinia, Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, all of which can accommodate ships of all sizes.

Smaller cruise ships have an even greater range of options. Ports you may never have heard of — such as Durres, Albania or Bonifacio, France, on the island of Corsica — are listed in the itineraries of small-ship lines like Emerald and Ponant. Ports you’ve only dreamt of visiting, like Capri, Amalfi or Jerusalem, are surprisingly accessible on several cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, including Windstar, Azamara and Celebrity.

Ports of call in the Baltic include recognizable city names like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Gdansk and Stockholm, along with cities you may be less familiar with — Visby, Tallinn and Riga, in Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, respectively.

Copenhagen is rich in architecture and seaside charm. Warnemunde, Germany, is the gateway port to Berlin. Cruise lines often schedule overnight stays there to allow ample time to explore the city, a train ride away from the port. Stockholm is another Baltic port where some ships overnight, allowing passengers to enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Shore excursions and activities

The range of shore activities in the Mediterranean is vast. In Rome, Naples, Athens, Nafplion, Crete, Corinth, Olympia, Santorini and Kusadasi, you can explore ancient Greek and Roman historical sites. In Istanbul, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Florence and Venice, tours focus on more recent art, architecture and history.

You’ll find vineyard and winery tours from almost every port in Italy and along the French Riviera (like Marseilles). Olive farm tours are popular from most ports of call in Greece but don’t rule out Greek wineries if your cruise itinerary takes you there.

Foodie tours are available in almost every port in the Mediterranean. The best include food-themed walking tours in Athens, truffle hunting tours from Livorno, Italy, and tapas tours in Barcelona. Or, you can do what I do and make it a point to sample local fare like pizza and gelato in every port.

Active tours in the Mediterranean include abundant choices for hiking and biking. If you’re itching to dip your toes into the blue Mediterranean waters, you’ll find beaches on almost all the Greek islands. Not every ship offers beachy shore excursions, so you may be on your own getting to them.

The easiest beach excursions are on Santorini, Crete and Mykonos. The most stunning beach I’ve ever seen is Myrtos Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s not near the cruise port, but half-day excursions are available to take you there.

And let’s not forget the beaches of the French Riviera or Barcelona’s beautiful stretches of sand.

The most surprising beaches in the Mediterranean include those along the crystal-clear waters of the upper Adriatic. Trieste (where some ships dock for Venice), Koper in Slovenia and Zadar in Croatia all have beaches (some pebble rather than sand) accessible from the cruise ports. If more active water sports are your thing, boating, snorkeling and even scuba diving are easily arranged on Santorini, Crete and Kefalonia and in Zadar.

Baltic destinations also offer beaches and watersports, but you’re more likely to find a scenic boat ride than jetskiing, and beaches are more likely to be enjoyed through windy walks along the shore than sunbathing and swimming. If the weather is suitable, the best beaches are in Copenhagen, Warnemunde and Stockholm. Boat rides, both slow scenic cruises and thrilling speed boat rides are popular throughout the Baltic. Boats are the ideal way to experience Copenhagen.

Land-based activities in the Baltic lean toward city tours, either via hop-on-hop-off buses or sometimes walking tours. Expect landmarks and museums of all sorts, many focusing on local events or areas of importance. Riga, Lithuania, and Tallinn, Estonia, both have museums focused on the Soviet occupation of those countries, for example.

Lighthouses and castles are some landmarks you can visit in the Baltic. Look for castles and fortresses in Gdansk, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Lighthouse excursions are possible in Kiel and Warnemunde, Germany. You can visit a medieval village in Old Town in Tallinn and a Viking village near Copenhagen.

Active tours on Baltic cruises include hiking and biking, available in almost every port. Kayaking is often easy to arrange if the weather turns out nice.

Winery visits are possible from ports in Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Poland but may not be offered by your cruise ship. You may have to seek them out and arrange your own tour guide or transportation. Brewery tours are considerably easier to arrange throughout the Baltic. Foodie tours include those that focus on cheese, pastries, meats and seafood. Walking food tours are possible in the larger cities, and farm visits with lunch are a popular way to experience the region’s cuisine.

Bottom line: Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises

What you want to experience on a European cruise can help determine whether you’d enjoy a Mediterranean or a Baltic cruise more. Both regions are loaded with visits to stunning European ports where you can experience the food, history and culture through tours and by simply walking the streets mingling with locals.

On a Mediterranean cruise, you gain the ability to add one or even two continents to your list of places traveled to, but if you’re trying to push your country count higher, a Baltic cruise can help you out based on the sheer number of countries it’s possible to visit on a single cruise.

Weather in the Med is more likely to be warm and sunny, allowing for more time enjoying water sports or lounging on a beach. But if escaping blistering summer heat at home is your chief objective, the crisp air in the Baltic may be what you need to reset on vacation.

Both regions have dozens of cruise lines to choose from, starting with mainstream lines you may already know but also including premium and luxury lines you may be longing to try. Transportation to and from Europe can be slightly easier and cheaper to Mediterranean departure ports when compared to some Baltic ports, but there are options for round-trip Baltic cruises from London that serve as a workaround.

The bottom line, then, is that it comes down to personal preferences. Ancient history or something more recent? Beach time or intensive sightseeing? Sample some of the world’s best wines or the world’s best beers? Either way you go, you can expect the cruise adventure of a lifetime.
