Stockholm is a major Baltic Sea cruise port and Sweden's capital city. The city covers a total area of approx 190 km2 (73 mi2) and has a population of around 935,000 (metro around 2,3 million). Port Stockholm is located on the meeting point of Salt Bay and Lake Malaren (the country's 3rd-largest freshwater lake - after Vanern and Vattern). The city (established in 1252) is spread across 14 islands and also on mainland Sweden (at the mouth of Lake Malaren).

Stockholm is Sweden's political, economic and cultural center. The region alone accounts for over 1/3 of the country's GDP and is one of Europe's top 10 regions by GDP per capita. In Stockholm are some of the top-ranked European universities, such as Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institute, Royal Institute of Technology. The city is also famous for hosting the annual Nobel Prize award ceremonies. One of its most prized museums - Vasa Museum (on Djurgarden Island) is Scandinavia's most visited museum. Stockholm metro (inaugurated in 1950) is famous for its stations' decorations and has been named "world's longest art gallery". The national football arena of Sweden is in the town of Solna (north of the city). The national indoor arena (Ericsson Globe) is in the city's southern part.

Here are the seat of Sweden's government, most Gov agencies, the country's Parliament, also the official residencies of Sweden's Prime Minister and monarch (Stockholm Palace is his official residence). Drottningholm Palace (UNESCO Site) in the outskirts serves as a private residence of the Swedish Royal House of Bernadotte. The best-known tourist attractions are in Gamla Stan (Old Town).

As cruise port, Stockholm in 2019 reported its record season with handled 281 ship calls (out of 287 booked), 74 turnarounds (roundtrips), and handled ~650,000 cruise tourists. To each visiting vessel is dedicated a pier coordinator responsible for all dockside logistics.

Port Stockholm

(locode SESTO) Ports of Stockholm authority also manages Port Kapellskar, Port Vartahamnen, and the new Port Norvik (completed in May 2020). The new cargo port has the capacity to handle the largest vessels (RoRo and boxships).

Port's cruising season is in the summer (late-April through early-October). As a call port, it is included in most Baltic Sea (Scandinavia and Russia) itineraries. Stockholm is served by regularly scheduled ferries to Turku and Helsinki in Finland (commonly called "Finlandsfarjan"), also to Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia ), and to St Petersburg (Russia) .

Stockholm islands are served by ferry ships run by Waxholms Angfartygs AB (aka Waxholmsbolaget) - a shipping company owned by Stockholm County Council. Waxholms Angfartygs owns all 25 vessels and is mostly tax-funded. Its services cover the entire maritime region from Arholma island (northeast) to Oja Island (south). Ferry services are year-round and used by approx 11 million passengers annually.

In February 2019, Tallink Grupp (TALLINK-SILJA LINE) started using shoreside power to provide electricity for two cruiseferries ( Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony ) operating the route Helsinki-Stockholm. Tallink's other Stockholm-homeported RoPax vessels were also scheduled to be fitted with the equipment for shore-power connections and gradually rolled out in 2020 and 2021.

In 2016, the cruise port had 230 ship visits (including 57 turnarounds) and handled ~490 000 passengers. Many passengers spend overnight (extra day and night) in the city, which benefits the local tourism industry even further. Statistics showed that cruise tourists spend around USD 58 million on city tours, hotels, restaurants, and shopping.

In 2017, the port handled 263 cruise ship calls (including 73 turnarounds) and ~600,000 cruise tourists (22% increase over 2016). The season started on April 30. During season 2017, in Stockholm were homeported 73 vessels (for roundtrip cruise departures/turnaround operations). On homeported liners, passengers often spend an extra day/night in the city, which further benefits the local tourism industry. Cruise passenger spending in Stockholm is estimated at around EUR 62 million. Maiden port calls were done by Norwegian Getaway (port's largest ship so far), MSC Fantasia and Saga Sapphire . 2017 was also reported as a record year for port's freight shipping volumes (both RoRo ships and container ships ) - a total of 9,6 million tons of cargo (7% increase over 2016's 9,01 million tons). The flow of TEU-containers between Sweden and different continents (primarily Asia) is also increasing. The number of TEUs handled by Port Stockholm increased 11% (over 2016) up to 60,000 TEUs.

In season 2018 the port handled 268 cruise ship calls (including 67 turnarounds) and ~623,000 passengers (out of Sweden's total 1,07 million), plus a maiden call at Port Kapellskar. For comparison, statistical data shows for 2014 - 264 calls (42 turnarounds, 467,000 pax) and for 2015 - 247 calls (53 turnarounds, 530,000 pax). Ferry passengers were 11+ million (out of Sweden's total ~16 million). Also increased RoRo (ferry freight) and TEU-container volumes - respectively, 7,2 million tons (+7%) and 57400 TEUs. 2018 was also a record year as port revenue - SEK 866 million (USD 95 million / EUR 83 million), the majority (30%) being from leased properties (approx 200,000 m2 and 350 tenants) .

According to a GP Wild-conducted survey, for 2018 port's annual economic contribution for the Stockholm region was EUR 176 million (port fees, ship services, cruise tourist spending on food, hotels, tours, shopping, transportation, etc), with 1100 supported jobs. The seaport was visited by 623,000 cruise passengers (plus 240,000 crew) who collectively spent EUR 57 million ashore (on food, tours, hotels, shopping, etc). In addition, the cruise companies spent EUR 25 million in-port (on harbor-pilotage-fairway dues). The survey showed that most cruise tourists were from Germany, UK and the USA. On average, day passengers spent EUR 72 pp, turnaround/roundtrip passengers - EUR 256 pp, crew - EUR 48 pp.

Port Stockholm provides to vessels all standard terminal facilities and services, among which is wastewater pumping (sewage water from onboard showers, WCs, galley). Sewage offloading is included in port fees and such facilities are available at all berths.

During 2019-Q1, the Port's container volumes increased by ~1/4 (over 2018-Q1) by handling more and larger boxships. Since May 2020, Stockholm Norvik Port has replaced the CTF (Frihamnen's container terminal). The new terminal is managed by Hutchison Ports ( Hong Kong -based global container terminal company, as of 2020 managing 52 seaports in 27 countries). The new terminal also has a RoRo (rolling cargo) section managed by Ports of Stockholm.

• In April 2020, at Port Norvik was installed and became operational two new (China-made) Super-Post-Panamax container cranes (gantry cranes). This allows here to be handled the Baltic Sea's largest vessels. Each crane has a height of 81 m (266 ft) and a lifting capacity of 65 tons.
• The first boxship (2012-built SCA Tunadal) docked at the new Stockholm Norvik Port on May 27, 2020.

For season 2020 (April 17 through October 19), the cruise port had scheduled 288 ship calls (booked berthings), including 13x for first-time visiting vessels. Maiden port calls were booked for Sky Princess and Island Princess, Le Bellot and Le Jacques Cartier (Ponant), Marella Discovery, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Jade (NCL), Mein Schiff (TUI), Veendam (Holand America), MSC Splendida, Azamara Pursuit, World Voyager ( Mystic Cruises ), Evrima ( Ritz-Carlton ). Note: The 3 linked ships are newbuilds (2020-launched).

Following the Coronavirus crisis, for season 2022 the cruise port had scheduled a total of 230 ship calls (booked berthings) with the largest visiting vessel being Norwegian Getaway , most calls by AIDAdiva , and most homeporting calls by the company Viking OCEAN . The Port eventually handled 205 ship calls and ~247000 passengers, including 18x maiden ship visits, 87x overnight stays, 10x 2-night stays, 5x 3-night stays.

Stockholm Frihamnen's new cruise dock "Quay F655" was officially opened on May 20th and inaugurated on June 21st, 2022. The facility occupies the site of the former container terminal (in 2020 relocated to Stockholm Norvik) and features a 330 m / 1083 ft) long dock/berth surrounded by a spacious land area specifically designed to serve more efficiently the turnaround/homeport cruise passenger traffic (checking in and checking out/debarking and embarking tourists) from buses and taxis. The Cruise Port Frihamnen project also included adding shore-power connections (in 2023), which allows the berthed ship to turn off its main engines and instead to use city-grid power for the onboard hotel operations and services.

In August 2022 was announced the plan for investing in cruise ship shoreside power facilities at the downtown-located Stadsgarden Quay (berths 167 and 160). Port Stockholm estimated that at least 45% of the cruise ship calls will use the shore-power facilities. For this project, in November 2021 was contracted PSW Group AS for the design, delivery and installation of both high-voltage shore power systems. The facilities were scheduled to be operational by August 2023 (Quay S167 /power output 8MVA) and by July 2024 (Quay S160 /power output 16MVA). Of the total investment (SEK 120M / EUR 10,6M), ~40% was covered by subsidies from the EU and Naturvardsverket (Swedish Environmental Protection Agency).

In September 2022 was announced a planned investment (Jan 2023) in a hydrogen fuelling station for vehicles at Port Norvik.

In June 2023 started regularly scheduled passenger shipping operations the world's first self-driving ferryboat.

• The autonomous technology was developed at Trondheim's NTNU/Norwegian University of Science and Technology as part of NTNU's Autoferry project (successfully trialed in 2022).
• MF Estelle is a catamaran-type vessel with dimensions 12x5 m (39x16 ft) and max capacity 25 passengers plus 6 bicycles. The autonomous ferry operates Stockholm's downtown route between Riddarfjarden Bay (Lake Malaren) and Sodermalm (island district). The boat is fitted with a 188-kWh battery pack (charged by 7,7-kW solar panels mounted on its roof) and is driven by an electric motor.
• The ship's operating system utilizes radar, LiDAR-based detect and avoid system (generally used on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), infrared and machine vision cameras, ultrasonic sensors (for docking maneuvers) and GPS (for positioning).

MF Estelle (built by Torghatten ASA/ Bronnoysund , operated by Zeabuz/ Trondheim ) is now navigating autonomously between Stockholm City's islands without any human assistance.

Stockholm cruise terminal

Stockholm cruise port has 5 quays. They are close to Gamla Stan or the Old Town.

Skeppsbron and Fortojning Pa Strommen are the closest to Gamla Stan. Stadsgarden is located south of Gamla Stan. Frihamnen and Vartahamnen are to north of the landmark, in the Port's commercial area.

• Skeppsbron quay is close to the Royal Palace and serves small ships.
• Fortojning Pa Strommen serves Holland America Line and Cunard Line.
• Stadsgarden serves bigger cruise ships. It has a small terminal building and it is near Fotografika.
• Frihamnen Quay is the most popular in Stockholm cruise terminal. The building is new, designed in bright colors and offering as tourist facilities a cafe restaurant, WI-FI, several eateries, tourist information, taxi parking and bus stop (in front of the building). For bus travel from the cruise terminal, take Line #76 that visit popular city sights and attractions.

Parking at the cruise port is not available.

In 2016 was improved Port Nynashamn's cruise terminal, where a new Seawalk was built and the pier was extended (current length 260 m / 853 ft) to serve smaller-sized ships instead only tenders, shuttle and tour boats.

In June 2021 Ports Stockholm started a EUR 1,5 million (~USD 1,8M) project for building a new cruise exclusive dock at Frihamnen Port (Quay F655) to double Stockholm's homeport cruise capacity. The project was completed in 2022. Quay F655's first cruise ship was Ambassador Ambience (on May 20th), while the facility's official inauguration was on June 21st (when here docked Oceania Marina ). Besides by cruise vessels, the new dock is also used for handling ships carrying project cargo. Quay F655 handled 16 ship calls in 2022 and 14 calls in 2023.

• Gamla Stan: Stockholm was founded here in 1252. Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen island, located in adjacent, are a living museum with cafes, restaurants, bars, attractions, shops, and amazing sights. The streets are narrow and cobblestoned. The buildings are in different gold shades. If you go there in the winter you will get a “storybook” feeling. You can visit attractions like the Nobel Museum, the Stockholm Cathedral, and the Royal Palace with its Royal Armory.
• Royal Palace: King of Sweden's official residence.
• Royal national city park: take a walk in the forest surrounding the city. You can meet hares, deer, moose and foxes. There are rare bird species, insects and beautiful butterflies. Don’t miss the Ekoparken.
• Stromma boat sightseeing: take voyage under Stockholm’s bridges. It will take you from an hour to two hours and a half to take a different look at the city. You can combine a boat tour with an open bus tour.
• National Museum of Sweden: on display are collections of arts, paintings, sculptures, graphics, drawings and handicrafts. You will find works of Rubens, Rembrandt, Renoir, Degas, Goya and local artist like Bruno Liljefors, Hanna Pauli, Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn.
• Stockholm city hall: the designer of the romanticism style building is Ragnar Östberg. It was inaugurated in 1923 on Midsummer Eve.
• Fotografiska: contemporary photography place, one of the world’s largest. Annually there are about 4 large and 20 small exhibitions.

Day 1. Walking Tour of Stockholm and Departure to Turku

At 15:00, the car will transport you to the harbor for a check-in aboard the ship sailing for Turku, Finland’s ancient capital.

Day 2 Departure to Turku

After breakfast our guide will meet you at the lobby of your hotel, and you will have a Stockholm city tour – an exciting walk through the historical center of Stockholm – Gamla Stan.

Day 2. Turku Orientation

You’ll be woken up early in the morning to have a breakfast on board. The buffet will include a wide range of hot and cold meals along with beverages.

Our driver will meet you in Turku at 8 a.m. and transport you to your hotel in the city center . The Scandinavian minimalism and comfort of the rooms will allow you to relax and recharge.

In the afternoon, you will go on a fascinating tour of Turku . This is a lovely harbor city that was created in the 13th century and is Finland’s oldest. Until 1809, the city functioned as Finland’s capital. Turku Cathedral from the 18th century, Turku Castle (Turunlinna) from the 16th century, and stunning architecture await you.

The 16th century was the most tumultuous time for the castle. It was the home of Duke Johan, who subsequently became King of Sweden.   At the time, the court had over 600 inmates. This fortification is now home to the Turku Historical Museum .

This is one of Northern Europe’s most important historical monuments of urban culture. The museum has restored 18 artisan houses and over 30 craft workshops. Workshops are established up in the Luostarinmäki houses, where artisans work on their crafts. These homes survived the 1827 fire and were restored in their original locations. The museum reproduced scenes of urban life in Finland’s old capital. You may see the traditional customs and daily lives of the residents here. Some houses feature stores where you may buy handcrafted things.

Turku is well-known as a scientific and cultural center : two schools have been in operation here since the 13th century, and in 1640 the first university and the first printing business in Finland were established. Turku was the site of the first publication of a newspaper in Finland, which began in 1772. In 2011, the city, together with the Estonian capital, was designated as the European Capital of Culture.

In the evening, you may take a tour through the neighborhood stores and dine in one of the charming Finnish restaurants.

Day 3. Trip to Helsinki

After breakfast, at 08:00, you will be picked up by a private vehicle and taken to the train station. The train from Turku to Helsinki will arrive at the central station in Helsinki, the Finnish capital, around 10:30 a.m.

The contemporary cosmopolitan city of Helsinki, which is located on the Baltic Sea’s coastlines, has been designated as the “World Design Capital” by the United Nations. Throughout this area, the natural splendor of the surrounding landscape is harmonized with the accomplishments of high technology and contemporary trends. A walking tour of the city center will provide you with the opportunity to explore both ancient landmarks and instances of modern architecture and progressive style, which demonstrate that the city is looking optimistically to the future.

Following your check-in at the hotel, you will go on a walking sightseeing tour of the city center. Finland’s most popular viewing tour, the Helsinki Panorama Sightseeing, will take you on a journey through the city’s past and present, highlighting the most amazing views of Helsinki. In this guided tour of Helsinki, you will learn about the city’s most important landmarks such as its historic core, Senate Square and Market Square, as well as its City Hall, Parliament buildings, Finlandia Hall and Opera House. The capital of Estonia, Tallinn , is the next stop on your journey. At 9 a.m., the driver will greet you in the lobby of your hotel and transport you to the West Port of Finland. From there, you will continue your fascinating experience by taking a tour of Tallinn’s downtown attractions.

The trip will be short and enjoyable, taking no more than 2 hours on a comfortable ferry.

The next generation high-speed vessel was built especially for the Tallinn-Helsinki route and is the fastest vessel ever built. The ferry’s overall length is 212.2 meters, and it has adequate capacity on board to accommodate 2,800 passengers.

Nearly 50,000 tons of recorded weight are contained on the facilities. The ferry is capable of reaching speeds of up to 27 mph while consuming minimum fuel on the way. Passengers will be delighted by the advances in service on board.

Day 5 Visit the Kadriorg Palace

In the morning we will pick up you and you will have one more fascinating excursion. You will visit the Kadriorg museum which represents a magnificent baroque palace, built over 300 years ago as a summer residence of tzars.

In the afternoon our car will bering you to the harbor. At 18:00, you will have completed the final part of your incredible adventure. A ship is waiting for you to return to Sweden.

Day 6. Travel back to Stockholm

It’s an easy choice because there are many options, including cruises to France, Spain and Italy on familiar big-ship cruise lines with reasonable prices and relatively easy flights. Mix ancient sightseeing and culinary sampling with a dash of beach time, all while surrounded by stunning blue seas, and you’ve got the essence of a summer cruise in the Med.

Baltic cruises are not about beach time, and most of the historical sights are anything but ancient. What you’ll find instead is incredible architecture, garden tours and deep dives into modern European history, as well as access to everything offered in some of Europe’s most vibrant cities in Germany, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. As with the Mediterranean, the region is rich with foods and beverages to taste. Think Danish pastries, German beer and Swedish meatballs.

Let’s look at what each of these two distinct European cruise choices offers to help you decide which one you’d like more.

Mediterranean vs. Baltic on the map

The Mediterranean Sea lies south of Europe, and though it’s connected to the Atlantic Ocean, it is almost entirely enclosed by the European, African and Asian continents. It comprises 11 smaller seas, which can confuse things when you shop for cruises; itineraries are sometimes labeled according to the smaller sea. In general, though, any ocean cruise with ports in Spain, France, Italy, Monaco, Greece or Turkey are Mediterranean cruises.

Eight northern European Union countries and Russia surround the Baltic Sea. It connects to the Atlantic via the North Sea at Denmark. Baltic cruises, particularly the longest itineraries, may begin or end outside the Baltic Sea itself, adding bonus countries to the itinerary. Countries most Baltic cruises visit include Denmark, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, plus Sweden and Finland. Longer cruises might also include Norway and United Kingdom countries outside the Baltic Sea.

Cruise itineraries

Mediterranean cruise itineraries generally are seven nights or longer. Peak season is summer, but it’s possible to find Mediterranean cruises during every month of the year. Summer daytime temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but can spike well into the 90s in July and August in some locations. Spring and fall cruises in the Med have more moderate weather.

You’ll find a wide range of choices of departure ports and countries your ship will visit. The most flexible departure ports in terms of what direction the cruise will take you are Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Athens (Piraeus) — all of which serve as departure or return ports for cruises in all directions across the Mediterranean.

Depart from Venice (Ravenna or Trieste) to sail to destinations along the Adriatic; in addition to Italy, your itinerary may include Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.

Because there are so many ports in the Mediterranean, sea days are generally limited to one per weeklong sailing, and many itineraries lack sea days entirely.

One-way itineraries that depart from one port and end in another are common in the Mediterranean, allowing your cruise to visit more ports in more countries than you might on a round-trip route. This can, however, complicate flight plans and may make flights more expensive than round-trip fares — something to pay attention to as you shop for your cruise.

The bonus of these one-way routes is that they are easily combined into longer cruises. A cruise that starts in Barcelona and ends in Athens can be combined with a second cruise from Athens to Istanbul or back to Barcelona. Some lines — such as Viking , Holland America , Princess , Windstar and Oceania — pre-package multiple one-way cruises to make the planning easy. On other lines, like Azamara , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian , you can book two (or more) cruises back-to-back to create your own extended voyage.

Lines that primarily offer round-trip cruises in the Mediterranean include Virgin Voyages , Celebrity and Carnival . Disney Cruise Line also offers round-trip itineraries, including some of the shortest cruises in the Med, with four- and five-night sailings during the line’s brief season there each summer.

Cruisers who count continents can check off three big ones with a carefully planned extended cruise in the region. One way to add Asia to your list is to spend time in Istanbul on both sides of the Bosphorus River, as it’s the dividing line between the continents. Alternatively, the Turkish ports of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Izmir are among those commonly visited in Asia.

Finding a Mediterranean itinerary that visits Africa can be a bit more challenging, but the ports to look for include Alexandria, Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Tunis, Tunisia. If you want to hit three continents in one voyage, look for 10- to 14-night itineraries on lines such as Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America.

Baltic cruise itineraries are also mostly seven nights or longer. Because the Baltic countries are farther north, chilly weather is possible even in mid-summer in the Baltic. Average high temperatures in Copenhagen, for example, are barely 70 degrees Fahrenheit during June, July and August. Helsinki is a degree or two cooler. Because of the climate, cruise ships only sail these waters from April through September.

Departure ports may be cities located on the Baltic, like Copenhagen, Stockholm or Warnemunde, Germany, or outside the Baltic, as in Southampton, England, or Amsterdam and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. As with Mediterranean cruises, you’ll find a mix of round-trip cruises beginning and ending in the same port city and one-way itineraries — many of which begin outside the Baltic Sea and end at a Baltic port.

The opportunity to create longer journeys by connecting multiple cruises is available in the Baltic. Those usually include Northern European or United Kingdom add-ons before or after your Baltic cruise. Think Stockholm to Edinburgh, Scotland. After a thorough cruise of the Baltic Sea, the itinerary might include multiple stops in the fjords of Norway before ending in the U.K. Baltic cruises that begin or end outside the confines of the Baltic Sea often have at least one day at sea, sometimes more.

Country counters rejoice! A solid itinerary within the Baltic can add eight countries to your list; add-ons in the North Sea will get you another handful if you plan carefully.

Prior to March 2022, Baltic cruises often included a stop in the Russian port of St. Petersburg. Currently, no cruise lines catering to Westerners call on Russian ports.

Ports of call

The list of ports of call in the Mediterranean is lengthy, ranging from European mainland ports like Dubrovnik, Zadar, Naples, Nice and Istanbul to popular ports on the islands of Sardinia, Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, all of which can accommodate ships of all sizes.

Smaller cruise ships have an even greater range of options. Ports you may never have heard of — such as Durres, Albania or Bonifacio, France, on the island of Corsica — are listed in the itineraries of small-ship lines like Emerald and Ponant. Ports you’ve only dreamt of visiting, like Capri, Amalfi or Jerusalem, are surprisingly accessible on several cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, including Windstar, Azamara and Celebrity.

Ports of call in the Baltic include recognizable city names like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Gdansk and Stockholm, along with cities you may be less familiar with — Visby, Tallinn and Riga, in Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, respectively.

Copenhagen is rich in architecture and seaside charm. Warnemunde, Germany, is the gateway port to Berlin. Cruise lines often schedule overnight stays there to allow ample time to explore the city, a train ride away from the port. Stockholm is another Baltic port where some ships overnight, allowing passengers to enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Shore excursions and activities

The range of shore activities in the Mediterranean is vast. In Rome, Naples, Athens, Nafplion, Crete, Corinth, Olympia, Santorini and Kusadasi, you can explore ancient Greek and Roman historical sites. In Istanbul, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Florence and Venice, tours focus on more recent art, architecture and history.

You’ll find vineyard and winery tours from almost every port in Italy and along the French Riviera (like Marseilles). Olive farm tours are popular from most ports of call in Greece but don’t rule out Greek wineries if your cruise itinerary takes you there.

Foodie tours are available in almost every port in the Mediterranean. The best include food-themed walking tours in Athens, truffle hunting tours from Livorno, Italy, and tapas tours in Barcelona. Or, you can do what I do and make it a point to sample local fare like pizza and gelato in every port.

Active tours in the Mediterranean include abundant choices for hiking and biking. If you’re itching to dip your toes into the blue Mediterranean waters, you’ll find beaches on almost all the Greek islands. Not every ship offers beachy shore excursions, so you may be on your own getting to them.

The easiest beach excursions are on Santorini, Crete and Mykonos. The most stunning beach I’ve ever seen is Myrtos Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s not near the cruise port, but half-day excursions are available to take you there.

And let’s not forget the beaches of the French Riviera or Barcelona’s beautiful stretches of sand.

The most surprising beaches in the Mediterranean include those along the crystal-clear waters of the upper Adriatic. Trieste (where some ships dock for Venice), Koper in Slovenia and Zadar in Croatia all have beaches (some pebble rather than sand) accessible from the cruise ports. If more active water sports are your thing, boating, snorkeling and even scuba diving are easily arranged on Santorini, Crete and Kefalonia and in Zadar.

Baltic destinations also offer beaches and watersports, but you’re more likely to find a scenic boat ride than jetskiing, and beaches are more likely to be enjoyed through windy walks along the shore than sunbathing and swimming. If the weather is suitable, the best beaches are in Copenhagen, Warnemunde and Stockholm. Boat rides, both slow scenic cruises and thrilling speed boat rides are popular throughout the Baltic. Boats are the ideal way to experience Copenhagen.

Land-based activities in the Baltic lean toward city tours, either via hop-on-hop-off buses or sometimes walking tours. Expect landmarks and museums of all sorts, many focusing on local events or areas of importance. Riga, Lithuania, and Tallinn, Estonia, both have museums focused on the Soviet occupation of those countries, for example.

Lighthouses and castles are some landmarks you can visit in the Baltic. Look for castles and fortresses in Gdansk, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Lighthouse excursions are possible in Kiel and Warnemunde, Germany. You can visit a medieval village in Old Town in Tallinn and a Viking village near Copenhagen.

Active tours on Baltic cruises include hiking and biking, available in almost every port. Kayaking is often easy to arrange if the weather turns out nice.

Winery visits are possible from ports in Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Poland but may not be offered by your cruise ship. You may have to seek them out and arrange your own tour guide or transportation. Brewery tours are considerably easier to arrange throughout the Baltic. Foodie tours include those that focus on cheese, pastries, meats and seafood. Walking food tours are possible in the larger cities, and farm visits with lunch are a popular way to experience the region’s cuisine.

Bottom line: Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises

What you want to experience on a European cruise can help determine whether you’d enjoy a Mediterranean or a Baltic cruise more. Both regions are loaded with visits to stunning European ports where you can experience the food, history and culture through tours and by simply walking the streets mingling with locals.

On a Mediterranean cruise, you gain the ability to add one or even two continents to your list of places traveled to, but if you’re trying to push your country count higher, a Baltic cruise can help you out based on the sheer number of countries it’s possible to visit on a single cruise.

Weather in the Med is more likely to be warm and sunny, allowing for more time enjoying water sports or lounging on a beach. But if escaping blistering summer heat at home is your chief objective, the crisp air in the Baltic may be what you need to reset on vacation.

Both regions have dozens of cruise lines to choose from, starting with mainstream lines you may already know but also including premium and luxury lines you may be longing to try. Transportation to and from Europe can be slightly easier and cheaper to Mediterranean departure ports when compared to some Baltic ports, but there are options for round-trip Baltic cruises from London that serve as a workaround.

The bottom line, then, is that it comes down to personal preferences. Ancient history or something more recent? Beach time or intensive sightseeing? Sample some of the world’s best wines or the world’s best beers? Either way you go, you can expect the cruise adventure of a lifetime.
