Is October a good time to visit the Caribbean?

October is the rainy season in Caribbean islands, even ones located off of the hurricane belt. Surprisingly, there’s a higher average rainfall in October than in some Caribbean islands in August .

But, don’t let the rainy season stop you from enjoying a great vacation! These Caribbean islands are filled with underwater activities, history, food, and culture that don’t require sunny weather all month to enjoy.

On top of that, if you’re looking for a vacation on a budget, October in the Caribbean is for you. Busy season on most islands is long over and won’t start up again until the end of November or December .

However, because we can’t control the weather, I always recommend purchasing travel insurance before heading to the Caribbean, especially during hurricane season!

Colorful Curacao back alley street

This best Caribbean island to visit in October is Curacao . Its beaches, scenery, and cultural diversity draw people from all over the world to this gorgeous island.

Curacao makes for a fantastic place to visit during October mainly because it lies below the hurricane belt! This island, which sits 40 km off the coast of Venezuela in the southern Caribbean, is fortunate to never experience hurricanes.

While October is considered part of the rainy season in Curacao, the average rainfall amount is only 3.31” (and only typically rains 7 days out of the month), and since the temperature is generally consistent year round (in the 80s!) that sprinkling of rain is a nice reprieve from the heat and sun.

One of the  best things to do in Curacao  is to hike Mount Christoffel. This epic hike 1220 feet up is best done at dawn so you can catch the sunrise from the peak!

Group walking through the water to the waterfall in Ocho Rios

Jamaica is famous for its stunning beaches, reggae music, delicious cuisine, unique culture, and epic hiking . This island in the Caribbean is a great tropical destination and perfect to visit any time of year.

October is hurricane season in the Caribbean, so expect rainy weather sprinkled between sunny days. The average rainfall is five inches, and the days are warm in the 80s. Because of the weather, October is off-season and cheaper to visit.

All the sites are open, like the beaches in Montego Bay or Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios. I got the chance to visit Jamaica because it was a port of call on a Western Caribbean cruise .

There are a lot of outdoor activities to do in Jamaica. For a taste of the jungle, go to the Blue Hole, where you have to do a short hike along the river to get to the waterfall. You will need water shoes to hike and jump off into the water.

  • What to do in October : Havana International Ballet Festival

Like all Caribbean Islands,  Cuba   gets affected by hurricanes. However, October is the end of Cuba’s hurricane season. Towards the beginning of the month, there is a chance of stormy weather. So, it’s best to visit at the end of October to enjoy better weather.

You can experience warm and pleasant weather, with temperatures averaging 30ºC, plenty of sunshine, and lower humidity.

October is a great time to visit Cuba. It’s a month full of festivities, the most famous being the Havana International Ballet Festival which brings together the world’s best ballet dancers.

October is also a great time to explore Cuba’s cultural and historical sites such as Old Havana and its colorful streets and old cars , the historic city of Trinidad, and the beautiful landscapes in Vinales.

Cuba is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. The crowds are smaller, and the weather is still warm enough to enjoy swimming in October.

Cuba, like Dominican Republic and Haiti , is relatively affordable compared to other Caribbean Islands , which makes it a great economical vacation. Especially in October as it is just before the peak season, flights and accommodations are often cheaper.

Overall, October is a great time to visit Cuba if you’re looking for warm weather, lively festivals, cultural attractions, beautiful beaches, and an affordable vacation.

9. Utila, Honduras

  • Average rainfall in October: 16 inches
  • Average high: 83 °F
  • Where to Stay: Manurii Boutique Hotel
  • What to do in October : Backpack and dive

Diving boat in Honduras, one of the best Caribbean islands to visit in October

If you’re looking for a hidden gem between all the well-known Caribbean islands, Utila in Honduras is the perfect place to go.

Additionally, Honduras is my pick for the most unique Caribbean island to visit October. Set in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean sea, Utila is part of the Bay Islands.

This group of small islands is set in the Belize Barrier Reef, which is actually  the Northern Hemisphere’s largest coral reef . So the underwater world is simply spectacular.

With its laid-back atmosphere and crystal-clear water, many travelers have fallen for the tiny island, especially when  backpacking in Honduras .

The quiet Central American island is especially known among fans of diving as one of those places where you can do a  Padi certification for a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere.

That’s also why it is the perfect Caribbean island to travel to in October. While this month is in the rainy season, you can still do what people love to do in Utila: diving.

Despite the rain, you can expect hot, tropical weather with temperatures between 23 – 30°C. So even during the night, it stays very warm, and it’s away from the hurricane belt .

Even if you’re not into diving, you can explore the island hiking, snorkeling, or tasting fresh chocolate that is produced on the island. Just pack a raincoat   and enjoy the tropical nature.

10. Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras

  • Average rainfall in October: 15 inches
  • Where to Stay: Upscale Infinity Bay Condo – Now With Onsite Dive Facility!
  • What to do in October: Explore over 100 dive sites offshore

Water taxi in Roatan Honduras offshore

According to our friend Bernadette at the Explorer Chick ,  Roatan Bay Islands are one of the most relaxing places to visit in the Caribbean. October is the rainy season in Honduras, so it is an excellent time to visit since the weather isn’t too hot, though it is still humid.

Don’t let the rainfall scare you though, October is still an incredible time to do what they do best – dive!

Similar to Utila, Roatan is renowned for its crystal clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a top diving and snorkeling destination worldwide. Over 100 dive sites include wrecks, walls, and swim-throughs.

The good this is that you can do these activities even when it’s raining , so you can still have fun during a trip in October.

On a dive, you can encounter diverse marine life, like sharks, rays, and tropical fish. Snorkelers can also enjoy the island’s beautiful shallow reefs and observe colorful sea creatures up close.

It is also off-season, so it is cheaper to see, which is a plus since visiting the islands is pretty pricey.

Roatan is an excellent destination for eco-tourism, with many opportunities to explore the island’s diverse natural habitats , including mangroves, rainforests, and marine reserves.

The island is home to many endemic species , including the Roatan spiny-tailed iguana and the Roatan parrot. Visitors can also participate in conservation efforts by visiting local wildlife rehabilitation centers and sustainable eco-tourism projects.

11. San Andres Island, Colombia

  • Average rainfall in October: 12 inches
  • Average high: 87°F
  • Where to Stay:
  • What to do in October : Hoyo Soplador blowhole

San Andrés Island, located in the southwestern Caribbean off the coast of Nicaragua but actually part of Colombia, makes for one of the best islands to visit in October.

While October is one of the rainiest months in San Andrés, with approximately 12 inches of rain, this tiny island is located well south of the Hurricane Belt.

Hurricanes coming close to San Andrés are extremely rare and few and far between. This is also the tourist off-season, so prices will be cheaper and there will be fewer crowds. Temperatures are also perfect, ranging from 78-87 F, with an average of 82.7 F (25-31 C with an average of 28 C).

The island has a unique blend of West Indies Creole and Spanish cultures. It’s also small, and renting a golf cart and circling the island to see the different beaches is a must-do.

You’ll want to make sure to stop at the Hoyo Soplador blowhole on the southern tip of the island and get a fun picture of you getting sprayed.

Heading out for a day at the tiny, picturesque island of Johnny Cay, just a short boat ride away is also a can’t miss. The natural aquarium just off the coast is also great for snorkeling.

Most people will enjoy staying on the North Side of the island, near the beaches of Spratt Bight, which is also where most of the  best San Andrés Island hotels  are located. Some standouts include the Casablanca, Aquamare Hotel, and the Decameron properties on the island.

13. Dominica

Average rainfall in October: 6-9 inches Average high: 91°F Where to Stay: Villa with Pool for 5 near Pointe Michel What to do in October:  Go snorkeling at Champagne Reef

The beautiful island of Dominica is known as the ‘Nature Island’ of the Caribbean.   This mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean is filled with natural wonders from whales to magnificent waterfalls.  It’s said that Dominica has 365 rivers – that’s one for every day of the year!

Average temperatures don’t vary much from month to month in Dominica.  In October, expect highs around 91°F and lows around 76°F.

Expect quite a bit of rain in October, especially if you are visiting the mountainous areas of the islands. After all, two-thirds of Dominica is a rainforest! But, what fun would a rainforest be without rain?

One of the best things to do in Dominica in October is to go snorkeling. It doesn’t matter if it is raining, Dominica is still known as being one of the world’s best locations for snorkeling .

Some of the  best tours in Dominica  bring snorkelers to swim through the bubbling waters of Champagne Reef, where volcanic gases bubble up from the seabed to make you feel like you’re swimming in a giant glass of Champagne!

14. Contoy Island

Average rainfall in October: 6-9 inches Average high: 91°F Where to Stay: View Isla Contoy hotels What to do in October: take a day trip from the Yucatan Peninsula to Contoy Island

Are you looking for an idyllic  Caribbean island to explore this October ? Contoy Island, located off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is a dream destination if you’re going to  travel to Mexico .

Contoy Island has stunning  white sand beaches  and lush tropical jungles filled with wildlife, making it perfect for travelers seeking a relaxing retreat or an adventure-filled day.

Located north of Cancun , similar to Cozumel , the island is only accessible by boat, so I recommend that you book a full-day tour with a local guide who will show you about the flora and fauna of the island.

They’ll take you to the most  beautiful beaches of Contoy , where you can snorkel and discover the underwater world of Contoy Island National Park.

The warm climate makes Contoy Island ideal for visiting during late October when other Caribbean islands may be too hot or too rainy. The average rainfall in Contoy in October is 177 mm (7 inches) , but there are always sunny days, and it is also the  slow season , which means lower prices and fewer crowds.

You can snorkel on the Ixlaché reef which belongs to the  second-largest barrier reef in the world !

There are also a couple of beach bars where you can taste  delicious seafood dishes  and Mayan cuisine specialties, like the famous Tikinxic fish.

Being a national park and a reserve for marine life and birds, you can’t sleep on Isla Contoy and you won’t find hotels there. The closest accommodation is in Isla Mujeres.

Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, Contoy Island has it all! So what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and head off on an unforgettable journey through Contoy Island this October!

15. St Lucia

Average rainfall in October: 9 inches Average high: 88°F Where to Stay: Jade Mountain Resort What to do in October: Hike Gros Piton

Is St Lucia Worth Visiting? Unique sandy beach with mountains in the background

St Lucia is a picturesque island located in the Eastern Caribbean known for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It’s also a popular location for filming movies in the Caribbean , like Superman and Dr. Dolittle.

While October falls within the hurricane season in most Caribbean islands, Saint Lucia is located right on the edge of the hurricane belt, making it a great destination for travelers seeking a tropical escape during this time of year.

October is part of the rainy season so heavy rainfall does occur occasionally but there’s still plenty of blue skies and sunshine.

Plus, as October forms part of the off-season, this means cheaper prices on accommodation and activities, like St Lucia snorkel tours.

When it comes to things to do, St Lucia boasts pristine beaches, lush rainforests, colossal mountains and a variety of outdoor activities.

Visitors can hike the iconic Gros Piton , take a dip in the Sulphur Springs mud baths or explore the island’s rich history at places like Morne Fortune or Pigeon Island.

For a luxurious experience, you can stay at the Jade Mountain Resort which is highly acclaimed, offering breathtaking views of the Pitons and an exclusive atmosphere.

For a more affordable stay, the Bay Gardens Hotel is a charming boutique hotel with easy access to the beach and nearby attractions.

16. Puerto Rico

Average rainfall in October: 4 inches Average high: 87°F Where to Stay: Tropica Beach Hotel What to do in October: Hike through the El Yunque Rainforest

When looking for places in the Caribbean to travel to during October, Puerto Rico is definitely an option that should be added to your list.

Firstly, although October falls within Puerto Rico’s rainy season, they almost always have less rainfall that month than any other month during the season. Puerto Rico averages around 4 inches of rainfall in October, and the temperature is usually around 87 degrees Fahrenheit. With a bit of extra rain in Puerto Rico, you can expect everything to be very green, lush, and tropical!

Girl on a rock overlooking an El Yunque National Park Natural Pool

One of the main benefits of visiting Puerto Rico during the rainy season is that you will get great discounts on hotels and you will not experience the worst of the wet weather, with most days having little rainfall.

While in Puerto Rico, some great attractions to add to your Puerto Rico itinerary include exploring El Yunque Rainforest, where you will have opportunities to see so much wildlife and be out in nature.

You should also head to Old San Juan, which is a vibrant city filled with so much character and history. Additionally, you can’t visit Puerto Rico without enjoying the beaches around the island!

For a place to stay, the Hotel El Convento is stunning and conveniently located in the heart of Old San Juan and nearby many other attractions!

17. Holbox, Mexico

Average rainfall in October: 7.5 inches Average high: 87°F Where to Stay: Aldea Kuka – Holbox Eco hotel boutique What to do in October: See the flamingos

Open air restaurant in Holbox Mexico

Isla Holbox (pronounced Hol-bosh) has gotten incredibly popular in the last few years. This Mexican island sitting at the northern end of the Yucatan Peninsula used to be a bit off-the-beaten-path, but now hotels stay packed well past the end of the former high season.

The summer, which is normally a low time in this part of the Caribbean, is a popular time to visit Holbox as well, due to the whale shark season, which ends in the middle of September.

This means that October is a fabulous month to see the quieter side of Holbox since you’ll be arriving in between the whale season’s end in September and the traditional high season’s start in November.

In October, you’ll catch the tail end of the flamingo season , though it’s a bit of a trek to reach them. You can also enjoy the regular Holbox activities like enjoying the sunset at Punta Cocos and seeing the  Holbox Bioluminescence  at night.

How  To Plan A Trip For  October In The Caribbean

Caribbean weather in october.

To narrow down your list of potential destinations, it’s helpful to know a little bit about Caribbean weather in October.

According to the  U.S. National Weather Service , hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1 to November 30. The “hurricane belt” – the region where hurricanes are most likely to form and hit –  covers a large amount of the Caribbean and tropical U.S.

No matter where you go in the Caribbean, it is unlikely that you will be affected by a hurricane. But it could happen, and one way to play it safe – and perhaps avoid purchasing travel insurance  –  is to focus your fall travel on islands that lie outside the hurricane zone. This includes some of our favorite destinations in the southern Caribbean, like Grenada , Bequia , and Bonaire .

Even if you’re not in danger of facing a hurricane, October is rainy season in much of the Caribbean. But that’s not as bad as it seems! In most islands, rainy season means a shower or two each afternoon, and maybe the odd day of rain. While you may not get 7 straight days of cloudless skies, is a nap during an afternoon rainstorm really such a bad way to unwind on vacation?

Remember when it comes to the hurricane belt: those who know, go below.  The islands outside the hurricane below are the best tropical places to visit in October.

Fall  Caribbean Festivals

October is also a prime season for themed weeks and festivals in the Caribbean! Food, rum, and music get top billing on islands throughout the Caribbean and can offer the whole family a unique experience – especially when the island is otherwise quiet.

If you’re wondering where to travel in October for a cultural connection, we highlight some of the best festivals below.

Bonaire - One of the Best Caribbean islands to visit in October

The Best Caribbean Islands To Visit in October

We can’t seem to stop raving about Bonaire . The scuba diving and snorkeling are spectacular and great for kids learning to get comfortable in the ocean. The travel to and from could not be easier. There are some lovely and kid-friendly hotels that would be perfect for recapturing a bit of summer magic.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao sit in a cluster just off the coast of South America. Together, they form the  “ABC Islands.” All three are well below the hurricane belt and generally have an arid climate. While the “rainy” season starts to pick up in October, this usually means no more than a quick rain shower during the day with blue skies returning right after.

Off the ABC islands three, Bonaire is the least known among family travelers. But it has so much going for it! The big focus on this island is time in the water, exploring Bonaire’s incredible marine life. And the fall off-season is a great time to discover it.

On top of great weather, October is a key month for Bonaire events. The first week of October is part of “Bonaire Culinair,” a 15-day culinary event, similar to “restaurant week” in major U.S. cities, where the island’s restaurants showcase special menus.

This year, Bonaire Culinair coincided with the Bonaire International Regatta, which celebrated its 55 th  year in 2022. The regatta includes races for sailors as young as 5 to 10 years old. You can watch the boats from the island’s northern beaches. Non-sailors can also participate in the associated festivals and parties.

Travel to Bonaire picks back up in November, so October is your last, best chance to get a deal!

Where to Stay in Bonaire With Kids

We recommend three hotels when in Bonaire with kids, depending on what you’re looking for.

(Note: If you’re searching for Bonaire all-inclusive family resorts, you may not find one: Bonaire doesn’t really focus on all-inclusive resorts. But don’t let that deter you! These great resorts have restaurants and bars on-site, and provide a great home base for exploring the island.)

First, we love Harbour Village Beach Club for a laid-back, family-friendly vibe with well-appointed rooms and a beach you can’t wait to return home to at the end of each day.

Second, Delfins Beach Resort is the right choice for families looking for a lively atmosphere, a great pool, and delicious food.

Third, Bellafonte Bonaire is our recommended choice for families traveling with older kids looking for a mix between a luxury boutique hotel and a self-catering apartment.

No matter the hotel or activities you choose for your family trip, you simply can’t go wrong in Bonaire.  Rent a car and it’s easy to make your way around the island, exploring   Bonaire’s best beaches   as you go.

Colorful Structures in Curacao

Curacao, Bonaire’s neighbor in the “ABC” chain of islands, also sits below the hurricane belt.  It’s another great option for October travel to the Caribbean, and a completely different island than Bonaire.

This island is jam-packed with activities. Highlights include a sea aquarium, an ostrich farm, caves, two national parks, and dozens of beaches with lively energy. T he colorful and charming buildings of Curacao’s capitol of Willemstad are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This list just scratches the surface of the things to do with kids in Curacao beyond the resort.

Curacao is a lively destination , worthy of a family trip.  Your kids might even be able to practice their school Spanish on your trip , as it’s widely spoken in Curacao (and a component of the local dialect, Papiemento).

Where to stay in Curacao with kids

Curacao’s roster of family-friendly boutique hotels is deep.

There are so many cool small and independently owned hotels to choose from, offering a nice change of pace from the more typical large Caribbean resort. But if you prefer more of a  resort over hotel vibe , you can find that here too.

For an in-town experience,  Scuba Lodge  is walking distance from several cafes and fine dining, but also offers Caribbean Sea views, an infinity pool for kids, affordable two bedroom units, and a playground at the on-site restaurant.

For a more traditional beach hotel,  Avila Beach Hotel is  an excellent choice for families, with spacious rooms, snorkeling right from a private beach, and a good location for exploring Willemstad.

And finally, for ultimate boutique luxury,  Baoase Luxury Resort  is one of the finest in the region. The gently sloping beach at this hotel, with plush lounge chairs and attentive service, is truly a sanctuary.

Have you heard about Mango Tree’s new trip itineraries ?  Each 45-page guide gives you the complete roadmap for your 7-day family trip to the Caribbean.

Our Curacao itinerary will take you off the beaten path, but in a low stakes kid-friendly way. And it will give you this trip without the planning stress (hooray!). We can’t wait to show you around this diverse and colorful island.

Learn the Language Currency and Culture of Grenada

In the Eastern Caribbean, and southernmost of the Windward Island chain is Grenada, another Mango Tree favorite. This was the island that helped us to discover the magic of the Caribbean. You can learn more about this beautiful island in our Grenada Travel Guide .

For now, suffice it to say that this hidden gem is fast becoming a popular destination for families, and it is easy to see why. It has mountains, waterfalls, and hidden beaches, all just far enough off the beaten path to satisfy families seeing an adventure. It also offers great food, hospitality, culture, and luxury. In other words: there is something for everyone.

Travelers to Grenada will spend at least some of their time at world-renowned bay beach of Grand Anse, a nearly two-mile stretch of white sand that is one of the most scenic and pleasant places to relax in the entire Caribbean. Its gentle slope, minimal waves, and ample but unimposing options for food and drink make it a perfect place to bring kids.

Other travel tips: make sure you try diving or snorkeling, hiking some of Grenada’s breathtaking mountains and shopping in the  St. Georges market.  This lively and busy square is where you can find fresh fish, local fruits and veggies, and the spices for which Grenada is famous are all on offer.

October is the rainy season in Grenada, but this should not discourage you!  Most rainstorms are brief affairs. The island has a tropical, humid climate (compared with the more arid ABC islands) and lush foliage covers every undeveloped inch. There is also a rainforest national park in Grenada’s mountainous interior, making for great hiking.

New, non-stop flights are now arriving from New York, Atlanta, and Toronto, making it easier than ever before to experience Grenada while travelling from the United States and Canada. Add it to your October travel list for sure.

October in the Carribean in Grenada

Where to stay in Grenada with kids

As for where to stay, we are in love with  Mount Cinnamon Resort for its intimate, boutique vibe and the en-suite kitchens (a must for all of the great produce you will pick up in the market).  This family run hotel really captures the authentic vibes of Grenada.

Spice Island Beach Resort is the top choice for families wanting all-inclusive 5-star luxury, with rooms that are steps from Grand Anse Beach

And True Blue Bay Resort  is a eclectic and colorful option for a low-key, lower-cost hotel. It has a bayside setting, but the hotel runs daily shuttles to Grand Anse Beach, just 10 minutes away.

Bequia Island in October

4. Bequia – St. Vincent and The Grenadines

St. Vincent is the capital island of a country made of sprawling islands. The capital island itself is beautiful but the real draw is the smaller islands in the archipelago, including Bequia , Mustique, and Canouan. It will take an extra bit of travel to get to, but it is worth it.

Expect a climate in the Grenadines similar to Grenada’s – humid and warm with the occasional rain shower. But the Grenadines are also firmly out of the hurricane belt, reducing your chances of having your trip interrupted by a major storm.

On Bequia, plan to spend most of your time relaxing by the pool and beach. Unless you plan on doing some diving or snorkeling, there is not too much going on here. In a good way. The Grenadines are always quiet, but during the off-season you will practically have the island to yourself.

One warning: Some restaurants may closed for the off-season. But enough will be open that you will have no trouble finding great places to eat. Jack’s Beach Bar, a waterfront bar and restaurant next to the gentle white sands of Princess Margaret Beach, is a perfect spot for kids of all ages, and the first place we taught our daughter to snorkel .

Where to stay in Bequia

Bequia Beach Hotel  remains one of our all-time favorite family hotels in the Caribbean.  It would be a great place to spend a fall getaway. After landing in St. Vincent, you will have a driver waiting to take you aboard the hour-long ferry that will carry you to Bequia. Grab a beer from the galley and the kids on deck may see dolphins jumping as the sun sinks down.

St Lucia - One of the best Caribbean islands for fall travel

5. S aint  Lucia

One of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean, St. Lucia is instantly recognizable for its twin mountains, the Pitons. They are visible from just about anywhere on the southwestern corner of the island, and alone are a reason to pick Saint Lucia over other Caribbean options .

Perhaps inspired by the views, the hotels in St. Lucia offer some of the most luxurious accommodations in the region, including some of the best infinity pools overlooking the Pitons, and some of the best dining options as well.  Staying at a hotel with this view should be on everyone’s Caribbean bucket list . Be sure to check for kid-friendly designations, as St. Lucia has it’s fair share of adult-only hotels.

St. Lucia is yet another option to find all the features mentioned above – great diving and snorkeling, hiking, and warm weather – and also below the hurricane belt.

As for October in the Caribbean specifically, the month marks Creole Heritage Month on St. Lucia .  You’ll have a unique chance to experience music, dance, cuisine, art and other cultural expression that represents St. Lucia’s melting pot of African, French, and English heritage. It culminates in Creole Day, which is celebrated across the island on October 25.

Where to stay in Saint Lucia with kids

We recommend The Landings Resort and Spa in Saint Lucia for families.

This resort in Saint Lucia is a family haven for a bunch of reasons. First off, the service is top-notch, even offering butler service in some suites. Secondly, it’s loaded with family-friendly amenities like a special kids pool that opens at 6 AM (a godsend for early risers), a kids club, and multiple dining options—all high-quality.

The resort offers flexibility with an optional all-inclusive package, letting you explore local cuisine if you want. Plus, the spacious suites can fit families of almost any size, making it a home away from home where everyone can truly unwind.

Best Caribbean Islands to visit in October - Barbados

6. Barbados

And finally, just east of St. Lucia and St. Vincent lies Barbados, another lush, tropical island just on the border of the hurricane belt. It sees major fall storms very infrequently. White sand beaches, charming towns, and easy travel put this at the top of many travel guides’ fall destinations.

Barbados is known best perhaps for its classic, colonial Caribbean vibe. You’ll find push hotels, pastel colors, and a sophisticated air.

Like the islands above, Barbados has rich marine life to explore via snorkel or scuba. What this relatively flat island lacks in hiking it makes up for in beautiful beaches, particularly on is west coast facing the Caribbean Sea. It also boasts limestone caves right on the ocean that kids and parents will no doubt be curious to explore. The Mount Gay rum distillery offers tours that are free for kids, but the tasting and classes are for parents only.

Barbados gets lots of visitors from the U.K., so it has a relatively well-developed tourism infrastructure and plenty of family-friendly options at all budget levels. The end of October also marks the Barbados Food and Rum festival – a great to chance to experience the best offerings of local and international chefs in this “culinary capital of the Caribbean.”

Where to stay in Barbados with Kids

Our detailed hotel profiles for Barbados hotels are coming soon.

We have clients who loved the new luxury all-inclusive resort in Barbados, O2 Beach Club and Spa .  Several restaurants, swim up bars, a spa, and privileges as a sister property, you’ll never got bored here. The one- and two-bedroom suites are great for kids in particular.

For something a little further afield, we also love the family suites at St. Peter’s Bay in Speightstown , a very family-focused property with tons to entertain the kids.

Aruba is the perhaps the most popular of the Dutch islands among Americans. And for a reason: It boasts some of the top sandy beaches in the Caribbean.  Because of its resorts, calm beaches, and overall ease, Aruba easily ranks among the best islands for kids in the Caribbean.

If a classic beach vacation is what you’re craving this October, with direct flights from many U.S. cities, then add Aruba to your list, as it’s also outside the hurricane belt. Aruba will feel more like the Bahamas: long, white sand beaches and familiar beach amenities. There are also quite a few casinos.

One nice thing about Aruba is that no rental car is needed. Aruba’s nightlife, shopping, and restaurant scene is concentrated around the hotel strip.

Where to stay in Aruba with Kids

Our detailed hotel profiles for Aruba hotels are coming soon.

Aruba is known for larger hotel brands, and inclusive resorts.  Most people choose to stay at a hotel on either Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, Aruba’s two most popular stretches of white sand.

Popular choices include the 400-room Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino  and the 350-room  Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort & Casino  (both of which have kids’ clubs and casinos, an excellent combination).

It’s no secret that we prefer small, more unique hotels, though. (And frankly, for that reason, Aruba is not our top-choice of the Dutch Islands.) For something a little smaller, try the Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort . It’s 72 rooms include two-bedroom apartments with kitchens, and there’s a dedicated kids’ pool.

7 Best Caribbean Islands To Visit In October (2024 Review)

Destinations By Month

Updated: December 15, 2023

October is when the fall season begins in many areas of the world. Although the turning of the leaves and the draw of warm drinks in the afternoon make fall most people’s favorite time of the year, a good number of us dread the coming cold months and want to extend our time under the summer sun. This is why many people book a trip to the best Caribbean islands to visit in October.

If you’ve dreamed about going on a tropical Caribbean vacation but have been hesitating about making your holiday plans come true, 2024 might be the year for you. The best way to start any vacation planning is to do the research. Here’s some much-needed information about the best islands to visit in October 2024.

1.  Antigua

Antigua has the honor of being known as one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. This glowing reputation is largely due to the 365 beaches scattered across Antigua. That means you can visit one beach every day for an entire year and have something new to experience!

Must Do: Aside from its many gorgeous beaches, Antigua has more to offer its visitors. The island’s coastline alone is worth putting Antigua at the top of the list for islands to visit on an October Caribbean holiday. Here tourists like yourself can go on a hiking trip one day, swim with the stingrays the day after, and end each day with fresh seafood meals.

Of course, no list of the Caribbean best island to visit in October 2024 is complete without including Jamaica . The island is probably the most popular out of all in the Caribbean, and for several good reasons.

Must Do: Jamaica is the best island for late-night partying, amazing beach views, and thrilling outdoor adventures. If you’re planning to make Jamaica you’re only Caribbean destination. There’s no better time to visit than in October. Put Montego Bay on your list of places to visit in Jamaica while you’re at it. The warm weather and clear skies will ensure the perfect vacation pictures.

3 . Barbados

Looking for a small island that is home to one of the best surfing spots in all of the Caribbean? Then Barbados is the island for you. This small but charming and beautiful island is home to many perfectly white sandy beaches, such as Gibbs Beach and Silver Sands.

Must Do: Speaking of the surf spot, Bathsheba is where you should go if you want to ride the Caribbean waves while soaking up the sun. However, if you’re looking for something calmer, head to Dover’s Beach where the water is always calm and peaceful.

The Bahamas is practically synonymous with the Caribbean, so it must be on the list when planning an October Caribbean holiday. This tropical paradise is renowned for its pristine blue waters and pink-sand beaches.

Must Do: During your visit, make sure to join the locals and have a drink of the local rum. You’ll definitely be tempted to bring a bottle or two back home. Don’t forget to visit Andros Island in the Bahamas, where you can explore everything from mangroves to estuaries and swamplands. The Bahamas is an island perfect for both partying and enjoying nature. Consider it one of the best islands to visit in October 2024.

5. St. Lucia

If you’re planning a group vacation and everyone has different interests, St. Lucia is the Caribbean island for you. The island is very accessible, and there are so many things you can try during your visit.

Must Do: Aside from basking under the sun on one of the many stunning beaches, activities such as SCUBA diving and snorkeling are also options.  For those in your group who prefer to stay near land, a day hike is a popular past-time in St. Lucia. However, rending a boat for a full day of touring is the best way to make the most of the island on an October Caribbean holiday.

6. Turks and Caicos

Although technically a group of two small islands, Turks and Caicos are lumped together as one destination. The islands are famous for being home to one of the world’s longest coral reefs, and it is also the only place in the world to have a conch farm. Turks and Caicos are a must-visit destination when planning a trip to the Caribbean.

Must Do: Here, all the beaches are free and open to the public, allowing you to enjoy each and every one of them. Plus, if you know where to look, you can find a peaceful and secluded beach spot that makes you feel like you own the beach!

Experienced and wannabe fun divers should have Curacao on their list of islands to visit in the Caribbean in October. The island is known for its excellent SCUBA dive spots which are beautiful and accessible all year long. Although the island mostly attracts serious divers from all over the world due to its location, in recent years, more and more hotels and all-inclusive resorts have opened up in Curacao, adding appeal to all tourists, not just divers.

Must Do: One tip to fully enjoy Curacao during your visit is to invest in renting a car. It makes going around the island easier and allows you to enjoy the sights at your leisure. Just make sure to explore the capital of the island, Willemstad. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the capital’s colonial architecture and pastel-colored buildings.

Why visit the Caribbean islands on October? It’s the best way to guarantee you enjoy your holiday without the flocks of other tourists. Plus, there’s nothing better and more satisfying than having a perfect tan right before the Winter months get too cold for you to enjoy the outdoors.

So, make the most of 2024 and finally go on your dream Caribbean vacation. Seeing and experiencing one of the best Caribbean islands to visit in October is a sure way to make memories you will fondly look back on for years.

Be sure to check out Galleon Beach, where you can find soft white sands and dazzling blue waters, or take a quick hike up Shirley Heights, from which you can see the best views Antigua has to offer. Hiking enthusiasts may also enjoy a bit of a longer hike, up to the summit of Mount Obama (yes, it’s named after the recent U.S. president!). The hike to the top can take around 3 to 4 hours and be quite muddy, especially if it has been raining, so pack appropriate footwear.

You can enjoy a variety of watersports in Turks and Caicos, including sailing, kayaking, jet skiing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. You can also hop on a ferry and spend time at North Caicos and Middle Caicos to see more stunning landscapes and unbeatable views.

The 25 Best Islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas in 2022

The best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas run the gamut from off-the-grid hideaways to ultra-luxe retreats, according to Travel + Leisure readers.

best caribbean islands to visit in october 2022

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas .

The Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas are a delightful mélange of islands — sunny stalwarts with shimmering blue waters, palm-fringed shores, and ultra-luxe resorts. But for all their common denominators, there's plenty that makes each island stand out, too. Some are rustic and rugged, bereft of any modern meddling, while others are well-developed oases with lots of shops, restaurants, and hotels to choose from. And Travel + Leisure 's list of the region's best islands this year is proof of its vast and varied offerings.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

The British Virgin Islands dominate this year's rankings, with Jost Van Dyke (No. 9), Virgin Gorda (No. 16), and Tortola (No. 23) all making appearances. The Bahamas, too, are well-represented — the Exumas (No. 4) earned marks from one reader for the "prettiest water and beaches you will ever see," while Eleuthera (No. 24) was touted as "enchanting, pristine, and beautiful"

Several readers also raved about the beaches and turquoise waters on Anguilla (No. 3), with one calling it "paradise found." Another said, "Anguilla is my favorite spot on this earth. Nothing compares. The beaches, the people, the food, the enjoyment…total bliss."

Meanwhile, Grenada (No. 6) got a nod for its "incredibly kind people," and runner-up St. Vincent and the Grenadines (No. 2) received praise for "fantastic water excursions."

At No. 5, St. Lucia — home to the majestic Pitons, beautiful beaches, and plenty of chocolate and rum — was described as "a great spot for active travelers on a romantic escape." Another T+L reader said, "St. Lucia is an untouched gem in many ways, a very beautiful island with a delightful culture and many activities to enjoy."

But the No. 1 spot, according to this year's World's Best Awards survey, belongs to Dominica, concisely described by one reader as "stunning." Read more about Dominica, and get the full list of best islands in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas below.

1. Dominica

Nicknamed the Nature Island, Dominica is not defined by the combo of pristine white sand and shiny resorts that's often synonymous with the Caribbean. Instead, the anything-but-average island lures eco-travelers with a jumble of rain forests, volcanoes, hot springs, thunderous waterfalls, and black-sand beaches. It has an undiscovered quality that can be rare not only in the region, but the world over. It's a dream for hikers, snorkelers, and all kinds of adventurers, but the island also offers pockets of over-the-top luxury, including this year's best resort hotel in the Caribbean — Secret Bay, tucked within the rain forest with tree-house-style villas, jaw-dropping nature views, and private plunge pools.

"Posh" is the best word to describe the British Virgin Islands. The island country's beautiful coast sets it apart from other Caribbean destinations. The shoreline at Cane Garden Bay and the white sand beaches on Anegada island are stunning. Meanwhile, the boulders and sea pools at The Baths National Park (touted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world) mystify visitors. One of the best ways to see these scenic islands is by yacht or on a boat tour from the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands. Alternatively, you can relax on a beach or by a pool at one of the upscale hotels.

Spring is the time to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, particularly in late April when the boisterous Carnival season on St. Thomas gets underway. Regardless of when you visit, try to spend at least a day enjoying the unspoiled beauty at one of the many beaches along St. John's shoreline, including the popular Trunk Bay beach. Or, visit a fort on St. Croix for a bit of Danish colonial history during your vacation. The best part? Americans don't need a passport to visit these Caribbean islands.

For travelers who want to stick to the shallows, Stingray City offers clear water, a sandbar and opportunities to swim with stingrays. While you'll certainly find the standard Caribbean staples – picture-perfect sandy beaches, verdant golf courses and palatial resorts – you'll also discover that Barbados offers a unique roster of non-beach things to do. Travel here to sample Mount Gay Rum, explore the limestone caverns of Harrison's Cave and the Animal Flower Cave, attend a horse race at Garrison Savannah and dance to calypso tunes. Don't forget to save time for exploring the island's historical plantation houses and exotic tropical gardens.

Just plan on sticking to one or two islands to avoid blowing your vacation budget on transportation costs.

To save some coin, grab food at a local supermarket before heading to the beach for a picnic.

The bright-colored buildings and natural features of St. George's harbor in Grenada offer a view worth savoring. But don't stare for too long – Grenada has more than 45 beaches to choose from, including the 2-mile-long Grand Anse Beach. Regardless of which shoreline you choose, you'll find clear water and white sand surrounded by lush greenery. If you need a break from the sand, head to Belmont Estate for a chocolate tour or stretch your legs on Grand Etang National Park & Forest Reserve's hiking trails.

St. Kitts garners its popularity in part from the soft sands and buzzing nightlife of Frigate Bay. While many choose to vacation here to relax at a resort on the beach and enjoy delicious cuisine (think: tasty seafood and fresh fruit), this destination offers plenty in the way of culture as well. It hosts excellent festivals, most notably the St. Kitts & Nevis National Carnival (known locally as Sugar Mas). When you need a break from the action, hop on a ferry for a daytrip to the quieter island of Nevis, where you'll find Oualie and Pinney's beaches.

Antigua is home to a wealth of diverse beaches – 365, to be exact. So whether you're interested in grabbing a bite to eat at Valley Church Beach or seeking a more secluded, romantic vacation at Half Moon Bay, you likely won't be disappointed. Plus, Antigua is where you'll find some of the best resorts in the Caribbean. The island also offers historical attractions to recognize Antigua's Colonial past, such as Nelson's Dockyard, constructed by the British Navy using enslaved people for labor, and Betty's Hope, an early sugar plantation.

As one of the ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire), Curaçao sits outside the hurricane belt, meaning you'll find sunny, pleasant temperatures year-round and little threat from swirling storms that can wreak havoc in the Caribbean. The dependable weather and healthy coral reefs (compared to the rest of the Caribbean) make Curaçao a top destination for divers, snorkelers and beach bums. Plus, this Dutch Caribbean locale boasts a lively capital filled with pastel-colored architecture and culturally significant sights, such as a sand-floored synagogue from the 18th century.

Home to towering mountains, dense rainforests, colorful coral reefs and stunning beaches, Jamaica boasts diverse scenery that attracts visitors from around the globe. Adventurous travelers can hike, rock climb or dive while their calm counterparts can lounge on Seven Mile Beach's soft white sand or swim in its clear water. It's perfectly possible to spend an entire trip having fun and relaxing at one of the island's numerous all-inclusive resorts. But for an authentic dose of local culture, head to Kingston (the island's capital) to attend a lively festival, listen to reggae tunes and try local specialties like Blue Mountain Coffee and jerk chicken.

Or, stop for casual barbecued meat and fresh fish at one of the open-air lolos located along the shore.

Meanwhile, beach bums can soak up some sun along the shoreline on a lounge chair, typically without overheating thanks to the constant breeze Aruba enjoys. What's more, this island lies outside the hurricane belt, so it's an ideal place to visit year-round, though room rates are generally lowest in late summer.

Compared to its neighbors, this group of islands has flown under the radar for years but is worth a visit. In this French Caribbean archipelago, you can explore white, golden and black sand beaches. Plus, more than 70% of Guadeloupe's territory is protected nature reserves – not to mention several marine parks complement their dry counterparts – making the country perfect for ecotourists and scuba divers. These preserved areas also appeal to those looking to avoid the crowded resorts and tourist hot spots of more popular Caribbean destinations.

Which Caribbean Island Should You Visit?

Each Caribbean island has its own draw, like Anguilla’s long white beaches.

The resurgence of travel to the Caribbean is hardly surprising. Despite all the shake-ups in tourism around the globe, the region’s sunny skies, turquoise waters, magnificent natural landscapes, engaging culture, cuisine, and historic sites remain intact and alluring.

Combine these elements with the Caribbean’s extensive air connections to U.S. gateways and the health and safety framework adopted across this tourism-reliant region, and it’s clear that Caribbean destinations will continue to top getaway wish lists.

From families seeking a cost-effective getaway to couples in search of the ultimate romantic getaway, here are the best Caribbean islands to visit based on an array of interests.

Beaches: Anguilla

Anguilla’s greatest treasure may be its magnificent beaches. Virtually all of the 33 found across Cove Bay, Maundays Bay, Rendezvous Bay, and Shoal Bay feature long coastlines, powdery white sands, and deep blue waters. The island’s small-scale character means the beaches are uniformly uncrowded.

Visitors can even take a powerboat trip from Road Bay in the Sandy Ground district to Sandy Island , a small sliver of white-sand beach eight minutes from the shore. The exclusive private island is ideal for an afternoon of easy relaxation sampling barbecue and the tasty local rum punch.

Premium resorts and gourmet dining are standard fare on this British overseas territory in the Caribbean’s Leeward Islands. The big local news is the November debut of the Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club , a beachside luxury resort located on the grounds of the highly regarded former CuisinArt property.

The exclusive new resort delivers three suite categories, a collection of villas offering generous outdoor spaces, and a private jet fleet dedicated for guests’ exclusive use. Boutique property Frangipani Beach Resort and the Four Seasons Resort & Residences both reopened in November. All three are positioned along lengthy stretches of white-sand beachfront with panoramic Caribbean Sea views.

Luxury: Nevis

Encompassing a scant 36 square miles, Nevis offers travelers a fast-disappearing Caribbean experience with no tall buildings, crowds, warehouse stores, or chain restaurants. Its easygoing charm belies an outstanding collection of luxury resorts and high-end dining venues.

A singularly verdant island even by Caribbean standards, Nevis’s green hills surround 3,232 foot-high Nevis Peak at its center. Ruins of colonial-era sugar plantations dot the hillsides, and visitors can explore the landscapes and take in panoramic island views via hiking and ATV excursions.

Luxury resorts are diverse and plentiful here. The 350-acre beachfront Four Seasons Resort Nevis, the island’s largest property, reopened in November following a multi-year, multi-phased enhancement.

The resort features redesigned suites, more than 50 private vacation rental homes, three infinity-edge pools, a Robert Trent Jones II golf course, and a nine-court tennis facility. There are unobstructed Caribbean sunset views at the renovated Mango gourmet restaurant and an extensive collection of the Caribbean’s signature spirit at the Crowned Monkey rum bar.

Built on the site of a 300-year-old sugar plantation, Montpelier Plantation & Beach embraces a laid-back chic with gardens and a private beach equipped with hammocks, cabanas, and a beach bar. The resort’s Mill Privee restaurant serves imaginative, intricate takes on contemporary Caribbean cuisine.

Boutique luxury resort Golden Rock —which has just 11 spacious guest rooms—sits on 100 acres along the slopes of Nevis Peak, amid tropical gardens with views of nearby Antigua and Montserrat.

Locals and visitors alike can enjoy fine seaside seaside at Gin Trap restaurant , but Nevis is also home to casual beach bars, headlined by Sunshine’s Beach Bar and Grill , a stroll across Pinney’s Beach from the Four Seasons.

Water activities—like catamaran sailing, fishing, and diving excursions—are a great way to experience the British Virgin Islands.

Ocean adventure: British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 50-plus island s with diverse landscapes, serene beaches , and green hillsides. The main four are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, and visitors and residents can journey among them via an extensive system of local ferries.

Not surprisingly, water sports are extremely popular here . Travelers can check the BVI Tourist Board website for links to local operators that lead deep-sea fishing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, and diving excursions. Full- and half-day private boat charters are popular too: Groups traveling on one of Dream Yacht Charter ’s catamarans are treated to air-conditioned cabins with a staff including a captain, chef, and first mate.

The BVI are also home to unique marine sites, most notably the Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda’s north shore. The Baths’ massive granite boulders form sheltered beachfront pools and crevices perfect for exploring, wading, and creating infinite Instagram posts.

Food Fete, the BVI’s premier culinary celebration, returns this year with in-person events across the islands throughout November and December. A highlight will be the Anegada Lobster Festival November 26–28, which includes an island-wide scavenger hunt and tastings focused on Anegada’s spiny lobster, the island’s culinary specialty.

Culture: Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s unique heritage combines influences from the Indigenous Taino culture, the island’s centuries as a Spanish colony, and its long stretch as a key port in the transatlantic African slave trade, which profoundly impacted the island’s culture.

“The island’s African legacy manifests itself in all aspects of daily life,” says Dr. María Elba Torres Muñoz, director of the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural, General Studies Faculty at the University of Puerto Rico. “It is felt and lived in their songs, in the dance, their food, their bodies, their way of speaking, their vocabulary, the way of loving.”

Contemporary visitors can trace Puerto Rico’s African influences through creations on view in seminal collections at the Museo de Arte de Ponce , Museo de las Américas , and Museo de Historia de Caguas , or at the Samuel Lind Studio in San Juan’s colonial district. They can also taste it in dishes such as mofongo, bacalaitos, and pasteles that are based on African cuisine. Try authentic crab-based Puerto Rican cuisine at El Burén de Lula in Loiza, home to Puerto Rico’s largest Black population, a legacy of its 16th-century settlement by Yoruba people from the West African countries of Nigeria, Benin, and Togo.

Puerto Rico’s unique heritage can be seen across the island in its art and architecture.

Romance: St. Lucia

Lush natural beauty, soaring mountain landscapes highlighted by the UNESCO World Heritage Pitons , and multi-hued sunsets make St. Lucia a paradise for couples and an ideal Caribbean romance destination.

The scenery creates a dreamy backdrop for St. Lucia activities that bring lovers together: Picture detoxifying mud baths and relaxing hot-bath treatments at the volcanic Sulfur Springs in Soufrière and strolls through the Botanical Gardens’ flowery canopy. Couples can also opt for more adrenaline-inducing pursuits, from helicopter tours to zipline and horseback excursions.

There’s plenty of romance in accommodations too. The suites at hilltop luxury resorts Anse Chastanet and Ladera were built with fourth “open” walls that overlook the Pitons.

Destination spa resort BodyHoliday reopened in October with programs that couples will appreciate, including (if they need some separate “me” time) a personalized Wellness Rehabilitation that incorporates relaxation techniques, fitness programming, holistic nutrition, and spa treatments. Beachfront sister property Rendezvous has also reopened with a focus on amenities and services designed to help couples to “reinvigorate” their relationships, including intimate, private beachfront dinners with chef-designed menus and “date nights” with champagne service and live entertainment. Couples planning destination weddings will find buy-out options here so they can create an on-property “bridal bubble.”

Family-friendly: Dominican Republic

Infinite stretches of coconut-palm-lined, white-sand beaches, and upscale resorts are de rigueur in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana district, the Caribbean’s all-inclusive resort kingdom and an easy win for families. Dozens of U.S. flights connect daily with the Punta Cana International Airport, and although the phrase “all-inclusive” can raise some travelers’ eyebrows, the combination of accommodations, cuisine, amenities, facilities, and activities makes this type of resort a hassle-free option, especially for family trips. You don’t need to be stuck on campus the whole time though; resorts’ tour desks can arrange off-property excursions, such as coastal catamaran tours.

Properties range from family-themed to adults-only and include branded properties familiar to sun-and-fun-seeking U.S. travelers.

Nickelodeon Punta Cana is a haven for families with its seven flexible accommodation categories, including two- and three-bedroom “super villas” measuring 2,200 square feet. Kids (and their parents) can cool off at the Aqua Nick water park. Plaza Orange features live entertainment and family-friendly movie premieres, while kids can meet their favorite Nickelodeon characters throughout the day at Character Central.

The “ecochic” Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda is at the other end of the design spectrum. Located on pristine Playa Esmeralda, a barely touched coastal region surrounded by tropical forest, the property emphasizes sustainability across four distinct boutique “villages,” each offering customized environments, activities, and accommodations. It’s a family-friendly option, thanks to kid-focused amenities, but it also caters to parents who may need the occasional break at one of its adults-only areas.

For grown-ups looking to ditch the kids entirely, the D.R. has plenty of adults-only properties, including TRS Cap Cana Hotel , where they’ll find the Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness Centre, an Ibizan-style beach club, and à la carte eateries serving Argentinian and Japanese fare. Or they can check into Breathless Punta Cana and burn off a few calories under tall palms with beachside fitness classes, or pump up the jam at the resort’s swim-up bar and multi-level Freestyle Pool, featuring live DJ music and curated cocktails.

Bonus: Belize for Adventure

While Belize is not an island, its prime coastal location on the Caribbean Sea makes it feel like one. What’s more, the temperate weather, many direct flights from the U.S., and the fact that the country’s official language is English, all make Belize a great—and often overlooked—warm-weather vacation option. The country is a wonderland of natural attractions, with extensive cave systems, lush jungles, and world-class dive sites. Combined with diverse cultures and historic treasures, Belize stands at the forefront of Caribbean adventure destinations.

Belize is a nexus for Maya, Caribbean, Garifuna, and even Mennonite cultures. English is the official language, although Belizean Creole is the most widely spoken.

The Maya civilization flourished in the region from 1500 B.C.E. through 1200 C.E., leaving behind archaeological sites now open to visitors. Several are located within Belize’s caves, which are accessible via guided tours that can range from easy walks to challenging excursions that require spelunkers to squeeze, crawl, climb, rappel, and swim through different sections.

Cave’s Branch Adventure and Jungle Lodge offers adventure-themed stays in the Belizean rain forest. Travelers can select their degree of exposure to nature, with “tree house” accommodations located 200 feet above the Caves Branch valley or jungle bungalows and cabanas located deep within the rain forest and equipped with separate air-conditioned and screened-in rooms, plus outdoor showers.

  • Find a Cruise

With endless balmy weather and blue seas, the Caribbean is popular all year round. But which are the best islands to visit in October?

The month falls in storm season for some islands, but many are outside the path of storms. With plenty of sunshine and warm seas, you can enjoy a visit even more as the crowds stay away.

Any unsettled weather often passes quickly, or hits only one part of an island. The Caribbean‘s idyllic beaches, warm weather, and exciting attractions remain unchanged no matter the time of year.

White sand beach in Aruba

Being outside the hurricane belt, Aruba —and its “ABC” pairings of Bonaire and Curaçao —makes a perfect destination in October. The worst you can expect is a quick rain shower, which breaks any humidity.

For sun-seekers, Aruba offers the classic picture of white sandy beaches and some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean . Its dining and nightlife scene is also surprisingly lively for such a small island.

At Smith Bay Beach Park and Eco Reserve, there’s plenty of good snorkeling amid coral reefs. Alternatively, find your perfect palm tree, and just laze around in its shade.

Buck Island, USVI

Another snorkeler’s paradise is Buck Island, off St Croix. A trail here has underwater signs to point out its many delights.

A great escape is unspoiled St. John, the smallest USVI island. It’s one of the best places to snorkel in the Caribbean , and—more surprisingly—hike in a 5,500-acre National Park.

Tortola, BVI

Tortola, BVI, one of the best islands to visit in October

While Tortola falls within the hurricane belt, October can be a good time to visit—especially later in the month. Temperatures will still be in the high 80s, but do check the forecast.

The largest island in the British Virgin Islands offers plenty of alternatives to the beach as you wait for any rain to pass. Road Town, the laid-back capital offers everything from spice shops and a shopping pier to a Folk Museum.

The island’s beaches include Cane Garden Bay, Smuggler’s Cove, and Long Bay Beach. Visiting Cane Garden Bay is one of the best things to do in Tortola , where you’ll find a perfect bay of white sand, turquoise sea, and rich greenery.

Tortola is also a great base to sample the rest of the British Virgin Islands. Enjoy a sailing trip to neighboring islands such as Virgin Gorda or Jost Van Dyke.

Clear waters of The Baths at Virgin Gorda

The Baths at Virgin Gorda, BVI

One of the best places to swim in the world , The Baths at Virgin Gorda are a tumble of massive rocks that have created various picturesque swimming pools. You can walk along the sands to find your own secret spot to bathe in.

Norman Island is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . It’s still an inspiration for sailors and divers wanting to get away from it all.

Antigua, one of the best islands to visit in October

October falls into Antigua’s shoulder season, meaning fewer visitors. That’s because of the rain—but any showers are welcome to help bring the island’s greenery to vibrant life.

The island is also blessed with several major sites where you can escape indoors. One of the best things to do in Antigua is to visit the historic Redcliffe Quay, a shopping area whose colorful buildings capture a bygone era.

Waterfront view of Nelson's Dockyard, Antigua

Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua

Even more history awaits at Nelson’s Dockyard, which has been voted “Best Attraction in the Caribbean”. Set up as a naval base in English Harbour during the 17th century, it preserves scenic forts and once-busy warehouses.

Couple eating in Backyard Rum Shack, Antigua

Backyard Rum Shack, Antigua

Speaking of the English Navy, you can’t leave Antigua without tasting the island’s famous rum. At the Backyard Rum Shack, follow the distilling process before sampling the final product.

Of course, the many beaches in Antigua remain an attraction for swimming and snorkeling. For something slightly different, take a boat tour to see the picturesque Pillars of Hercules geological formations from the sea.

Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman, one of the best islands to visit in October

Stingray City, Grand Cayman

Hurricanes rarely bother Grand Cayman , although October can bring rain to the island. However, with temperatures hitting the 80s, and the rain usually confined to afternoon showers, October remains a great time to visit.

That’s even more true if your focus is on, or under, the water. At Stingray City, encountering stingrays remains a spectacular experience.

The coral reefs are also immune to the weather up top. Dive among this underwater paradise, and you will be immersed in a different world.

Sandy beach of Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman

At Seven Mile Beach, one of Grand Cayman’s best beaches , the fun carries on both on the sand and in the sea. It can be raining in one part of the island, but still sunny here.

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park relies on the rains for its tropical beauty. It’s just as beautiful if you are unlucky enough to catch a shower.

Exterior of Pedro St. James National Historic Site, Grand Cayman

Pedro St. James National Historic Site, Grand Cayman

If you do need some time indoors, visiting Pedro St. James National Historic Site is one of the best things to do in Grand Cayman . Walk its grand rooms to admire the furnishings, and learn about the island’s history.

One final reason to visit Grand Cayman in October is that it’s Restaurant Month. Special set-price menus are available around the island, from brunch to dinner.

St. Lucia, one of the best islands to visit in October

St. Lucia celebrates its Creole heritage in October. The Art & Heritage Festival 1981 fills the month with song, dance, cuisine, and other cultural events.

Creole mixes African, French, and other influences into a distinct language spoken throughout the Antilles. Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Saint Lucia share a common base with strong local dialects.

Exterior of Morne Coubaril Estate, St. Lucia

Morne Coubaril Estate, St. Lucia

If the history of the island interests you, visiting Morne Coubaril Estate is one of the best things to do in St. Lucia . The estate was in the same family’s hands for more than 200 years, and they set up a sugar plantation here when the island was under French control.

Rum and chocolate-tasting tours bring history to life, as do plantation visits. October showers mean the estate’s greenery is extra lush, and hikes and ziplining are great ways to see the rainforest up close.

View of the majestic Twin Pitons, St. Lucia

Twin Pitons, St. Lucia

You can also experience some of the best hiking in the Caribbean around the dramatic Twin Pitons that dominate the island’s skyline. The rainforest here is also a great place for off-road touring.

Barbados, one of the best islands to visit in October

Barbados is often less affected by storms than other islands as it’s so far east. The island’s 80 or more beautiful white sand beaches are obviously a first stop to experience the best of the Caribbean in October.

Perhaps the most famous is Bridgetown’s Carlisle Bay, a calm haven of impossibly blue water for watersports.

View inside Harrison's Cave, Barbados

Harrison’s Cave, Barbados

You can escape the weather completely by plunging underground into Harrison’s Cave. A tram takes you on a ride amid the geological wonders of stalagmites, stalactites, and the 45-foot-high Great Hall.

At Gun Hill Signal Station and St. John’s Church, you can learn about the history that Barbados is known for . Both these historic sites offer wonderful Caribbean views.

The end of October also sees the four-day Barbados Food & Rum Festival. Taste the best local and international chefs have to offer in this “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.”

Roseau, Dominica, one of the best islands to visit in October

Roseau, Dominica

If you know what bouyon , jing ping , bélé , and kadans are, you may probably already be heading to Dominica in October. That’s the time for Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival, which features all these local musical styles and many more.

The three-day festival packs out the capital, Roseau during the last weekend in October. But it marks the end of an entire month dedicated to celebrating Creole culture, including some amazing cuisine .

Lush landscape of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Dominica

Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Dominica

October is also a good month to see Morne Trois Pitons National Park looking its best. This Unesco-recognized park surrounds the peak of Morne Trois Pitons, whose volcanic nature bubbles to the surface in Boiling Lake.

View of Emerald Pool, Dominica

Emerald Pool, Dominica

If the famous Emerald Pool in the park is too cold for a dip, you can find hot pools near Trafalgar Falls. Enjoy the walk to see the falls, then plunge into the nearby warm springs.

There’s more nature closer to hand at Roseau’s Botanical Gardens, venue for the World Creole Music Festival. Wander among many indigenous or imported species, many of which will look their best after rain.

For instance, October falls within hurricane season, so there are some islands you may want to avoid if you don’t want to take any chances of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is also the rainy season in many of the islands, so you will want to consider that before booking your flight.

However, even during the rainy season, there is still many hours of sunshine every day.

Which Caribbean Islands Have The Best Weather In October?

Best caribbean islands to visit in october.

Below are the islands in the Caribbean that are not located in the hurricane belt and are a safe choice during the month of October.

The two best islands to visit in October because of the best weather conditions are the following:

Turks & Caicos

1. Aruba

Aruba is one of the abc islands and has one of the lowest chances of rain in the Caribbean during the month of October.

Though the chance of rain is slightly higher in October than the rest of the year, it’s still much lower than in other Caribbean islands. Making it the perfect spot to sunbathe and enjoy a nice tropical October vacation.

To put it into perspective, the average rainfall in October, one of the rainiest months in the Caribbean, is still lower than some of the other Caribbean island’s dry months.

Therefore, Aruba is one of the best islands in the Caribbean you could visit in October.

White sandy beach with wooden sun umbrellas

Curacao is located near Aruba and also has some of the lowest chances of rain in the Caribbean. Surprisingly it is a very dry island to visit in October.

The chance of rain in October is higher than in the rest of the year in Curacao but still much lower than in the rest of the Caribbean.

Curacao is a great island for scuba diving, hiking and just relaxing on one of the many white-sand beaches.

It is also a province of the Netherlands, so has a huge European influence bringing great food to the island. But if you still need more reasons to visit, it is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean .

Sail boats on blue blue water in Bonaire

3. Bonaire

The final of the ABC countries, which includes Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, is Bonaire another good choice in the month of October and is one of the best Caribbean islands.

Bonaire is also a municipality of the Netherlands located outside of the hurricane belt, so it’s relatively safe during this time of year.

It’s a small island, but it’s lovely, and the locals are friendly. One the best remote tropical islands you visit in October.

4. Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago are two separate islands that makeup one country. They’re just off the coast of Venezuela in South America, so they’re pretty much clear of the hurricane’s path.

They are not the safest Caribbean islands to visit on this list as far as petty crime goes, but if your main worry is not being in the hurricane zone, you will be safe here. There are plenty of things to do in Trinidad and Tobago making it a great adventure vacation.

Trinidad is the larger of the two islands, but they’re a pretty small country. They’re a great choice to visit during these months when the weather is a main concern.

Palm trees lining white sand beach in Barbados

5. Barbados

Another great spot to visit in the Caribbean Sea is Barbados.

This eastern Caribbean Island has some gorgeous beaches.

Until July 2021, when Hurricane Elsa rolled through, Barbados hadn’t been hit by a hurricane in roughly 60 years making it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit in October.

The odds aren’t high, so it’s a relatively safe place to visit in October. It’s also a relatively dry month if you’re worried about the rainfall impacting your beach days.

By the way, all beaches are public in Barbados, which is super awesome, because it has some stunning beaches and you are going to want to visit them all.

The island where pirates of the Caribbean was filmed

6. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

The nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is made up of the main island of St. Vincent as well as some smaller islands.

This is a very remote destination with Barbados being the closest island 100 miles away. This is a mainly undeveloped destination, so if you like remote and authentic, this is the best place to visit.

October is a great month and Saint Vincent normally has clear blue skies with normally only a few cloudy days.

Located just below the hurricane belt, these islands will most likely be safe and sound during the month of October.

It’s a fairly underrated place to visit and great for a fall trip to the Caribbean.

It has pristine beaches and even some epic coral reefs you will want to check out.

While you are here be sure to check George town the capital.

Palm trees lining a beach in Grenada

Are you looking for warm weather in October? Well, maybe you should think about visiting the island of Grenada is one of the least visited Caribbean destinations.

It’s in the southernmost section of the hurricane belt, so it’s rarely hit and is a great place to visit in the fall season.

Because it’s not a tourist gold mine, it’s also one of the cheapest Caribbean destinations. An island nation that shouldn’t be skipped.

Grenada is known as the “Island of Spice,” and you can expect to smell the aroma of the cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, turmeric, and ginger that grows here.

There is plenty of hiking, exploring, and outdoor adventures to be had here. One of the things that makes this Caribbean destination so fabulous as there is so much more to do here than hang out on the beach.

Palm tree on the water in San Andrés, Columbia

8. San Andrés, Columbia

Out of range of almost all hurricanes, San Andres is an island off the coast of Nicaragua, but it’s part of the country of Columbia.

It’s another great option during the month of October. It’s one of the best places for snorkeling and scuba diving.

The water is crystal clear blue and this Caribbean island hosts nothing, but blue skies for your October trip.

Clear water with coral underneath in Panama

9. Bocas del Toro, Panama

There are nine main islands that make up Bocas del Toro.

They are part of Panama and are located off the country’s east coast.

They have a very low risk for hurricanes, making them another great choice in October. The islands have a laid-back vibe, and they’re fairly underrated and not very well known.

Making it all the more reason to visit.

If you love visiting these kinds of places, you’ll love it here.

What makes Bocas del Toro so unique is it is surrounded by water, and to get anywhere you take water taxis. It is a place like nowhere else.

Hammock inbetween two palm trees on white sand beach

10. Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are made up of three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman with Grand cayman island being the most popular.

Although the Cayman islands are inside the hurricane zone, they are rarely hit by hurricanes. The last time they were hit by a hurricane was in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan rolled through, thankfully only two lives were lost the island bounced back quickly.

If you have always wanted to visit the Cayman Islands but were unsure because of the expense of visiting them, October is the perfect month.

Take advantage of the off-season and visit one of the most luxurious islands in the Caribbean.

The Worst Caribbean Islands To Visit In October

Below are some of the worst islands to visit during the month of October because they get hit by hurricanes more often than other islands.

They also have higher rainfall levels in October. We are not saying that you can’t visit these islands in the month of October, just be warned that historically they have been harder hit by hurricanes.

Pig swimming in the clear water ocean with bird on his back

One of the worst places to visit during hurricane season is the Bahamas. The island of Abaca in the Bahamas has been given the Hurricane Capital of the Caribbean, which is not a title to be excited about.

The islands get hit harder and more often than other islands in the Caribbean. So while you will have warm weather if you are trying to avoid rain or hurricanes on your vacation, you might want to save the Bahamas for another month.

Sun setting in the Virgin Islands

2. The Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are made up of islands controlled by the United States and the United Kingdom.

The UK-controlled islands are normally referred to as the British Virgin Islands, and the US-controlled are commonly referred to as the US Virgin Islands.

The most popular US Virgin Islands are St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. The Virgin Islands are within the hurricane belt and have cause for concern during hurricane season.

They are not the place you want to be if the worst were to happen.

White sand beach of Turks & Caicos

3. Turks & Caicos

Turks and Caicos are also some small Caribbean islands located within the hurricane zone, although they are rarely hit. However, if you like to live on the side of precaution you will want to avoid these islands.

Whether or not a storm rolls through, October is a very rainy time of year in the Caribbean and in Turks and Caicos.

Ariel view of Saint Maarten

4. Saint-Martin or Sint Marteen

The island of Saint Martin is comprised of two different municipalities and is roughly divided 60:40.

Saint-Martin is an overseas collectivity of the French Republic and a member of the European Union.

The other part of the island is called Sint Maarten and is a country that is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Dutch side is more populated than the French side, but it’s smaller. The island is east of Puerto Rico and just a few miles south of Anguilla.

While this island is gorgeous, it is located within the hurricane belt and does get hit about once every hurricane season. They don’t have the best of luck.

It might not get hit drastically each time, but it’s still something to be wary about before traveling to this island in the month of October.

When Is Hurricane Season In The Caribbean?

The hurricane season occurs from June 1st through November 30th. The peak of the season is in mid-September, and most activity occurs from mid-August to mid-October.

September is the worst month for tropical storms, total rainfall, and the threat of hurricanes.

October is the second worst month. On average, the Caribbean experiences roughly four tropical storms in October, but most don’t turn into hurricanes. This is good news if that is when you are looking to take a vacation.

Tropical storms can still be intense and bring on strong winds, heavy rains, and less sun for your tropical vacation.

This means that October can be a risky and dangerous time to visit the Caribbean. However, after mid-October, the chance of a hurricane rapidly declines, so if you’re visiting at the end of the month of October, you might be safe.

Also, there are some islands outside of the hurricane belt in the Caribbean.

So if you have your heart set on visiting the Caribbean in October, you may want to consider only visiting certain islands.

Weather In The Caribbean In October

October can be a very wet month in the Caribbean, but less wet than September. Temperatures in October run from mid to upper 80 degrees Fahrenheit to average lows around 70 degrees.

So start getting ready to show off that new bikini of yours, because you are going to want to wear it.

Should You Visit The Caribbean in October?

October is not all bad news, but being prepared and knowledgeable about what to expect and what could happen is important.

Tourism is fairly low in October due to the potential hurricanes. However, October is the lowest month for tourism anywhere.

Because October is right after summer when most people aren’t sick of the cold yet and are not yet traveling for the fall/winter/spring season.

Kids just are getting back into school, so if this is your month to travel congratulations you will find the best deals anywhere you decide to go.

More positives to visiting the Caribbean in October include fewer crowds of tourists, lower accommodation prices, and lower airfare costs.

If you want to save money and have the whole beach to yourself, you’ll love October in the Caribbean.

There are also some islands that lie outside of the hurricane belt that you can visit and not chance being hit by a tropical storm or hurricane.

Conclusions On The Best Caribbean Islands To Visit In October

The month of October isn’t the ideal time to visit the Caribbean for good weather, but you can still have a good time and make the most of it.

You just need to know when to visit, where to go, and what to expect. If you stick to more of the southern Caribbean islands, you will be able to avoid storms and rainfall much more effectively.

However, if you have your mind set on a certain destination, ensure you’re paying attention to the weather before your trip and have traveler’s insurance in case anything goes awry so that you cancel if a storm is brewing.

The more prepared you are, the better. The Caribbean is not dangerous for the most part, but you definitely don’t want to be there if a hurricane rolls through, so plan accordingly.

You can have a great time in the Caribbean in October if you know what to expect.

The threesome offers a multinational population with a colorful culture, a diverse culinary palate, loads of history and lore and as many sports as you can imagine.

When it comes to the ultimate Caribbean vacation, Aruba, the smallest of the ABC islands, delivers something for every type of traveler from active pursuits to casinos and shopping. Beach lovers find the swaths of creamy white sand that cover the northwest shore irresistible. There’s a wild east side with the pristine 32-square-mile Arikok National Park where donkeys roam. And, research shows that Aruba’s population is right up there with Denmark when it comes to happiness. The brand “One Happy Island” continues to reign after 40 years.

October brings out the culinary heritage of the island with the annual event,  Eat Local , where native foods and ingredients are showcased at participating restaurants. Food aficionados reap the benefits of a fixed price meal for lunch ($15) and dinner ($30 or $40) from October 1 to 14, 2019. If you haven’t tried keshi yena, now is the time to order this popular dish, which consists of seasoned shredded chicken, mixed with cashews and raisins smothered in Gouda cheese. Why not start with pumpkin soup, funchi or balchi pisca? You can feast on Criollo barbeque, kerkeri tacos or the catch of the day. On the island, fish and seafood dishes are staples and served at most locations. Aruba’s 90 nationalities contribute to the diverse culinary melting pot taking influences from Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.

One of the liveliest times of the year in the Caribbean is Carnival but there’s always room for more festivals and Island Take Over headed for its second year takes up residence from October 30 to November 3, 2019, as the island turns up the music and the party begins. There are nonstop beach parties, pool parties and concerts with international artists like English reggae and pop band, UB40, Puerto Rican singer, Luna and Colombian musical artist, Alex Sensation. Topside the coral covered island is a hiking and mountain biking wonderland. Most visitors are drawn to Washington Slagbaai National Park with rolling hills and vacant beaches. Nature lovers are thrilled to spot a green parrot and spend hours watching flamingoes on Goto Lake.

The next monthly cultural market takes place on October 26, 2019, from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm. If you miss this event, daily presentations are offered Monday to Friday.

Once the center for trade in the West Indies, today’s Curacao remains the commercial heart for the Dutch West Indies but more importantly it’s a cultural epicenter for the non-Hispanic Caribbean. Over 500 years of flavors, customs, peoples and cultures have collided to make one of the most vibrant and interesting places in the world. While visitors will find beaches, diving and hiking, it’s the urban life that brings in textures and depth. Museums, galleries, walking city tours, heritage sites and elders that recall history all make Curacao a rich and memorable experience.

A big draw is the culinary diversity. The island has had influence from foreign lands for centuries so much so that Indonesian rifstaffel is a staple at many locales. Restaurant Week Curacao now in its tenth year is Curacao’s first and oldest food event. The concept is high-end dining for an affordable price allowing patrons to taste a variety of dishes from the island’s talented chefs. Menus include lionfish, Indonesian rice table and pumpkin cheesecake. The three-course dinner is priced at 55 guilders (around $30) and dates are October 11 to 18, 2019.

Turks and Caicos

Best for: Secluded white sand beaches

A British Overseas Territory, Turks and Caicos is an archipelago of 40 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and it is famed for its stunning shores—but none more so than Grace Bay Beach. Located on the northeast coast of Providenciales and renowned for its pristine white sand and turquoise waters, it's consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world (these are the top beach spots in the United States ) and is the crown jewel of the island. Other notable spots to catch some rays and enjoy the sea are Bright Beach, Smith's Reef and Turtle Cove.

What to do: Ever heard of Seven Mile Beach? It's a reference to the uninterrupted stretch that runs from Leeward Beach (across from Grace Bay Beach, Bright Beach and Smith's Reef) to Turtle Cove and the very reason so many people choose to vacation in Turks and Caicos. Those who love diving will be excited to learn that Turks and Caicos is home to one of the largest barrier reefs in the world (roughly 340 miles of barrier reef surround the islands).

Where to stay: Another major selling point of Turks and Caicos? The resorts. Wymara Resort & Villas sits on the pristine Grace Bay Beach and offers such family-friendly activities as snorkeling excursions, jet skiing and wind surfing, as well as kayaking through the mangrove channels. Indulge in spa treatments at the on-site spa or Caribbean cuisine prepared by award-winning Australian chef Andrew Mirosch. Aside from a luxurious bathrooms and 400 thread count sheets, each room comes with daily breakfast.

Best for: Rum enthusiasts

The Caribbean's easternmost island, Barbados is blessed with beautiful beaches and coral reefs (make sure to pack your reef-safe sunscreen ) that line the coast and attract visitors from around the globe with incredible snorkeling and scuba diving. Fun fact: Barbados is the only Caribbean island to have formed from the continental plates colliding rather than by volcano. But many visitors come here with one thing on their mind: Rum. And Barbados is where it all began, making this one of the best Caribbean islands to visit for a fantastic cocktail.

What to do: Mount Gay Rum Distillery became the birthplace of rum in 1703. Here you can tour the facility, try a premium flight of four signature rums or take a cocktail workshop with an award-winning mixologist. When you're ready to take a dip in the sea, calm waters make Bath Beach one of the best for swimming, while Crane Beach is known as one of the most picturesque spots on the island. Adrenaline junkies from around the globe flock to Silver Sands, a gusty outpost on the southern coast, acclaimed for windsurfing. Those looking to escape the sun can venture down into the cave system of Harrison's Cave to see ancient stalactites and stalagmites.

Where to stay: Families can find fun for all ages at Tamarind by Elegant Hotels , a Mediterranean-style all-inclusive resort on the West Coast of Barbados. The property offers an array of Bajan activities, from dialect lessons to beach cricket (Barbados' sport of choice), kids and teens events, as well as unlimited non-motorized sports—snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Saint Lucia

Best for: Outdoor adventures

From mountains and rainforests to plantations and beaches, the eastern Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia has a setting for every type of vacationer. This member of the British Commonwealth offers visitors unspoiled and lush scenery, plenty of natural hot springs, waterfalls, diving, beautiful beaches and the iconic Pitons, a pair of pointy mountains on the west coast.

What to do: Adventurers can zipline, hike and explore Gros Piton, the second-highest peak on the island. For animal lovers, there's horseback riding on the beach. History buffs can tour Fort Rodney, built upon a peak located within the Pigeon Island National Landmark, and will be treated to a 360-degree view of the island to boot. Those looking for some R&R can let their stress melt away at Soufriere, a scenic town on the island's west coast that's home to many hot springs and mineral baths.

Where to stay: Luxury-seekers can kick back at one of the island's five-star resorts. Situated on 100 acres of lush rainforest on the site of an 18th-century sugar plantation, Sugar Beach impresses with its picture-perfect views of the majestic UNESCO World Heritage–listed Piton Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. Book a treatment in the Rainforest Spa—there's even a couple's treehouse treatment room built on stilts—or sip a rum cocktail in the poolside cabanas.

Best for: White sand beaches

Antigua, located in the Lesser Antilles, encompasses 108 square miles of soft sand and fertile plains. Ringed by coral reefs and cerulean waters, this sun-soaked island is renowned for its expansive coastline and multitude of beaches. There are more than 365, so you could visit a different one each day for an entire year! Coupled with the pleasant climate—cool breezes and low humidity—it's easy to see why Antigua is such a popular tourist destination.

What to do: Looking for the most Instagram-worthy beach on the island? Head to Half Moon Bay on the eastern shore to get those shots. The waves are strong here, so it's best for bodysurfing and boogie boarding and not swimming. Try snorkeling at Galleon Beach in English Harbour or take a long, sandy walk (about a mile) at Jolly Beach.

Where to stay: On the southern part of Antigua is Curtain Bluff , and let's just say there's a reason—well, a few—that it's a mainstay on luxury travel lists. Among them: an unmatched seaside setting, gorgeous gardens and world-class accommodations, complete with marble bathrooms, coffered wood ceilings, oversize soaking tubs and verandas. Those looking to unplug will be pleased to hear rooms do not include TVs.

Best for: A quick getaway

Proximity to Miami—it's just a 30-minute flight—makes the Bahamas a convenient escape. But once you arrive, you'll feel as though you're a world away. For starters, the Bahamas isn't one singular island, but 700 isles in the Atlantic. Nassau Paradise Island is a top tourist destination and for good reason: It has 300 days of sunshine a year, water temperatures averaging 80 degrees and beautiful beaches, most notably Paradise Beach on the northern shore.

What to do: There's plenty more to explore beyond Nassau. On the east side of Harbour Island is Pink Sands Beach, a 3-mile swath of soft-pink shoreline punctuated by a handful of private villas and low-rise hotels. The vibe is serene and relaxed and the scenery stunning. While you're there, be sure to savor some local delicacies, like conch. Looking for a wildlife experience you can't get anywhere else? Visit Pig Beach, located on Big Major Cay in Exuma, to swim with a colony of adorable feral pigs.

Where to stay: Those looking for a secluded getaway should consider The Cove Eleuthera , a high-end boutique resort nestled on 45 unspoiled acres. Accommodations include luxury guest rooms, suites, villas and cottages. There are also high-end dining options, a spa and a hilltop infinity pool.

Saint Martin

Best for: Multicultural experiences

Saint Martin comprises two separate countries in the northeast Caribbean Sea and is divided between its northern French side (Saint-Martin) and it's southern Dutch side (Sint Maarten). There's a rumor that it's sunny here 365 days a year. We couldn't quite confirm that with the weather service, but we can say that every day certainly feels sunny when you're relaxing on one of the 37 beaches on this delightful island or taking to the clear, warm ocean to swim, sail, water ski, snorkel or fish. The temperature on the small island averages 80 degrees and never dips much below 70 degrees, even in the middle of winter.

What to do: Orient Bay Beach is the first stop for many Saint Martin visitors thanks to its long coastline and inviting waters. But since it's on the French side of the island, it's worth noting that clothing is optional (the nudity is mostly relegated to the south section). A visit to Loterie Farm, a nature sanctuary on 135 acres, means an afternoon of hiking and zip-lining through the jungle canopy. Leave time for duty-free shopping on Front Street or plan a day out on a catamaran.

Where to stay: Check into the Orient Beach Hotel , the only lodging right on the sugar-white sand of Orient Bay Beach and the perfect location from which to explore the surrounding beaches, restaurants and shops. Along with your comfortable accommodations in one of 35 beachfront suites, beach chairs and umbrellas are complimentary and breakfast is included.

Best for: Shore diving and snorkeling

As the lesser-known Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela (its cousins are Aruba and Curacao), Bonaire is focused on preserving its natural resources—the land, sea and reef—for generations to come. The Bonaire National Marine Park, founded in 1979, consists of 2,700 hectares of coral reef, seagrass beds and mangroves and is one of the oldest marine reserves in the world. Thanks to this dedicated effort, tourists are treated to a spectacular array of marine life. (If you enjoy underwater adventures, don't miss this list of beaches with the clearest water in the world .)

What to do: Grab a snorkel and some fins (which you can usually rent from a hotel or dive shop) and head straight into the water—this is the best Caribbean island to visit if you don't want to take a boat to a dive site, as 54 of the 85 official dive sites are accessible from shore. Keep your eyes peeled for 57 species of coral and 350 species of fish, including colorful triggerfish, parrotfish, tangs and moray eel, in these clear and warm waters. On land, watch for more than 200 species of birds, explore more than 400 caves or 300 kilometers of biking trails, or try your hand at land sailing on a Blokart, also known as a land yacht. As you drive around the island, be mindful of wild donkeys that often stand in the middle of the road while snacking on vegetation.

Where to stay: There's only one private beach on Bonaire and Harbour Village Beach Club is your key to accessing it. This lush property features enormous and comfortable suites, plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs on the palm-tree-lined beach (read: you won't have to wake up early to save a spot), and breezy seaside dining at the ship-shaped La Balandra Restaurant & Bar, where the barracuda ceviche is a don't-miss appetizer. The best part? The shallow reef butts up against the restaurant, so you can literally walk into the water from the beach and begin snorkeling among colorful fish.

Best for: Beach bums

Beaches, beaches, beaches—it's what Aruba, a Dutch island just north of Venezuela, does best. We're talking pure pristine white sand and turquoise ocean heaven, nearly everywhere you look, making it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit if sun and sand are at the top of your vacation wish list. Aruba is blessed with clear skies, bright sunshine and cooling trade winds practically every day of the year. It's also one of 10 islands you can still visit during hurricane season .

What to do: Top picks for a beach day you'll never forget include the award-wining Eagle Beach, which is the widest on the island and the perfect place to view the iconic Fofoti trees. The 2-mile-long Palm Beach is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and Mangel Halto Beach is an ideal spot for snorkeling and shore diving due to the area's influx of parrot fish and blue tangs. When you've had enough beach time, head to Arikok National Park to view cultural heritage sites, such as caves and original rock drawings, and check out Aruba's natural pool (Conchi)—watch for the water spraying over the volcanic rock formation.

Where to stay: Situated on over a mile of white pristine beach, family-friendly Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusive offers guests access to 11 dining options, eight bars and four freshwater pools. Plus, you'll find fitness classes, a guided island e-bike tour, snorkeling, a rock-climbing wall and even a kids-only club.

Puerto Rico

Best for: Passport-less Caribbean cuisine

Dubbed the "Dining Capital of the Caribbean," the U.S. territory Puerto Rico offers the perfect destination for those looking to explore the Caribbean culinary scene—and you won't need a passport to taste this tasty cuisine. A fusion of Spanish, African, Taíno Indian and American influences, the island's history and diverse culture shaped its food, resulting in a unique blend of flavors and dishes.

What to do: Puerto Rico has a vibrant street food scene, so be sure to explore food stalls and kiosks alongside finer dining establishments and award-winning restaurants. Consider timing your trip to the numerous food festivals and events being hosted throughout the year to further celebrate the local culinary scene. Once you've had your fill of food, you'll be ready to explore the colorful architecture of Old San Juan, marvel at the Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay after dark and chill out at Flamenco Beach.

Where to stay: Further enhance your food-focused trip with a stay at Dorado Beach , a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. It's known for its exceptional culinary program, which includes three restaurants showcasing the flavors and techniques of Italy, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. As one of the 10 best resorts in Puerto Rico , this property sits on 50 acres of serene coastline and boasts a spa sanctuary with an infinity reflection pool overlooking a pineapple garden.

Saint Kitts

Best for: Hiking

In 2022, Saint Kitts was awarded the Best Caribbean Hiking Destination in Caribbean Journal's Travelers Choice Awards—and you'll need to plan a longer stay if you want to tackle all the amazing hikes on this West Indies island. Alongside neighboring Nevis, these two islands make up one country known as the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis . Divers will also be impressed with Saint Kitts, with such dive sites as the Wreck of River Taw, Devil's Cavern and Friars Bay Reef.

What to do: Grab your hiking boots and get ready for plenty of action. Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcanic crater that stands nearly 3,800 feet high, is the highest point on Saint Kitts and Nevis and one of the tallest peaks in the Caribbean. On the way to the crest, hikers are treated to the 360-degree splendor that is Central Forest Reserve National Park. Other popular hikes include Bat Cave and Waterfall (yes, hundreds of small bats make their home here) and Radio Tower, which is a brisk hike that delivers panoramic views of the entire island. Ready for the toughest hike on the island? At Dos D'anse Pond, the trail climbs through green foliage and a 900-foot gutter before reaching the gorgeous freshwater pond that's lined with tropical plants.

Where to stay: Families are sure to love St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino , a beachfront resort with such activities as outdoor movie night, ladder ball, cornhole, pickleball courts and a photo scavenger hunt. Guests can take a dip in one of the three on-site pools and participate in aqua aerobics classes. The Emerald Mist Spa offers massages that can be booked in the resort's beachside cabanas for the ultimate relaxation.

Dominican Republic

Best for: All-inclusive resorts

As the second-largest Caribbean country, the Dominican Republic has everything you want in an island vacation: white sand beaches, delicious food, golf courses and plenty of beautiful and exhilarating attractions. And the best way to experience all of this is by staying at an all-inclusive resort, something the island specializes in—from budget-friendly options and family-friendly all-inclusive resorts to luxury and adults-only retreats, these properties make vacationing easy by including your taxes, gratuities, meals, drinks, entertainment and activities.

What to do: Even though everything is already included in your all-inclusive resort, you'll still probably want to get off property and see more of the island and immerse yourself in the culture. Visit the jungle habitat Monkeyland to play with the friendly squirrel monkeys; tee off at the par-72 Jack Nicklaus signature course Punta Espada Golf Course; or enjoy a day trip to Saona Island for a little extra solitude among the beautiful beaches.

Where to stay: Home to the 16,000 square-foot Splash Island waterpark, Panchi Kids Club, Vibe Teen Club, on-site bowling alley, arcade, ice cream parlor, candy shop, escape room and more, the five-star all-inclusive Lopesan Costa Bávaro Resort, Spa & Casino is the ultimate Caribbean oasis for kids and parents alike. Come for the picturesque white sand beaches and stay for the seven freshwater pools, wide array of internationally inspired dining concepts and relaxing spa.

Best for: Foodies

Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean Sea near Saint Martin, is revered as one of the best culinary destinations in the Caribbean, making it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit. This is due to its blend of inspiration hailing from native Caribbean cooking, Spanish, French and English influences and a strong base of African traditions. As such, visitors will find restaurants offering truly authentic dishes, such as barbecue and jerk, callaloo and marinated seafood dishes. Of course, the 33 beautiful beaches aren't too shabby either—Meads Bay Beach tops many best-beaches lists.

What to do: Eat! At only 26 miles in length and a few miles wide, Anguilla does an impressive job of packing a lot of flavor into its small island. The nation's national dish is pigeon peas and rice, a one-pot dish of pigeon peas, rice, spices and herbs. Grilled spiny lobster is a delicious treat at Da'Vida Restaurant, where the views are equally fantastic. For a more laid-back dining experience, visit the Sunshine Shack on Rendezvous Bay for a seafood and barbecue lunch with the sand beneath your toes.

Where to stay: Speaking of the breathtaking Rendezvous Bay, it's where you'll find the 178 luxurious suites and villas of Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club . Aside from multiple golf courses, you'll find a rejuvenating spa, cooking classes and wine tastings, a family-friendly pool complex with a splash pad and lazy river and an amphitheater for live performances.

Best Places To Travel In October

An off-season month is the perfect time for a relatively cheap getaway..

Known in the United States as the month of Halloween, October has so much more to offer than ghosts, ghouls and goblins. The only thing scarier is how cheap your flights will be to some of these locations for some of the best vacations in October.

Check out music festivals in tropical locations like Dominica , an epicenter for everything to do with Creole-inspired music and its unique genres. More interested in learning about the environment while immersing yourself in it? Join the Sea & Learn foundation on the small island of Saba for its annual, month-long visit. San Francisco also offers a completely free festival at beautiful Golden Gate Park.

If all that seems too tame for you, there's also the thrilling Phuket Vegetarian Festival where devotees perform self-mutilating piercings (typically in the cheek or lip) during what is also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

Whatever your fancy, read on for the best places to travel in October.

Felabration — Lagos, Nigeria

View of Lagos, Nigeria

Travel to Lagos, Nigeria, for a music festival dedicated to the life and work of one man: Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Felabration hosts a variety of artists from hip-hop, R&B, jazz and the Kuti-derived Afrobeat genre. It lasts the week of his birthday and takes place at New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos State.

In addition to celebrating his musical work, Felabration also celebrates Kuti's work as a human-rights activist. He fought aggressively against an oppressive Nigerian government in the 1970s, and, to honor that sentiment today, Felabration hosts competitive debates around topics like poverty and corruption. The Felebration Symposium also invites professors and local politicians to speak.

Felebration '22 runs from Sep. 28 to Oct. 4.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival — San Francisco

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival in San Francisco

Nowadays, music festivals usually cost a pretty penny or some volunteer hours to gain entry. With the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival in San Francisco, that isn't the case; in fact, the festival is completely free.

Plan a trip to Golden Gate Park for what originated as a "Strictly Bluegrass" festival in 2001. By 2004, however, Founder Warren Hellman, co-founder of multi-billion-dollar equity firms, added "Hardly" to the name, as artists from other genres began performing at the festival, too.

Hellman's vision was to avoid corporate sponsors, so he always funded the festival. Despite his death two months after the 2011 iteration, the festival will remain free until 2026, thanks to the endowment Hellman left.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass attendees are encouraged to be environmentally friendly and bike or use public transportation to the festival. No hard alcohol is allowed, but you're still allowed to bring your own beer and wine.

The festival goes from Sep. 30 to Oct. 2.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival — Thailand

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

If you have an appetite for southeastern-Asian, vegetarian food, you should consider heading to amazing Phuket for the vegetarian festival. Be warned, though: This isn't a festival dedicated to meat-free eating. It is, perhaps, one of the most intense celebrations in the world and is not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

The festival's other name is the Nine Emperor Gods Festival . Unmarried men and women known as "masong" invite the spirits of the gods to enter their bodies under trance and proceed with extreme, self-mutilating body piercings (usually around the mouth area) and burning-coal walks. The masong are not allowed to eat meat, drink alcohol or have sex to maintain pure thoughts and a clean body.

Those strict requirements, in turn, help fill the streets with food stalls selling vegan delicacies (dairy isn't allowed either), like boiled noodles, steamed-rice dishes and fresh spring rolls. The environment is hectic, as fireworks and firecrackers are constantly firing off, especially on the last night. So, be sure to wear long sleeves, close-toed shoes and earplugs.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival/Nine Emperor Gods Festival takes place from Sept. 25 to Oct. 4.

Suwannee Hulaween — Live Oak, Florida

Suwannee Hulaween festival in Florida

Combine your love for Halloween with a variety of music, friendly vibes and the natural world, and you get Suwannee Hulaween . It's a music festival in Live Oak, Florida, started by the band the String Cheese Incident and set in a naturally enclosed, wooded environment with a lake.

There are four stages, but, if you need a break from the music, there's also other activities. Attendees can join yoga classes, learn to balance on a slackline, partake in music meditations or go on guided nature walks. Live Oak is also less than two hours by car from beautiful Cedar Key , so there's always an opportunity for an extended vacation.

Some names on their lineup for 2022 include Portugal. The Man, Gorgon City, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise, among many others.

Suwannee Hulaween goes from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30.

Sea & Learn — Saba

A view of the Caribbean island Saba

October is a big month for the tiny Caribbean island of Saba. Just a 12-minute flight from St. Maarten, Saba is home to less than 2,000 people and a vast, mostly untouched ecosystem. It's known as the "Unspoiled Queen," and, each October, the Sea & Learn non-profit foundation hosts a month-long event dedicated to eco-education and enhancing "your environmental awareness."

A host of experts are invited to Saba, and, every other night, each expert presents a topic. Those experts also visit Saba schools with the Saba Conservation and Child Focus program to teach the local youth about their home. Tourists and local adults alike are invited to join in the myriad dynamic, educational events, as all, with the exception of the school program, are free to the public.

World Creole Music Festival — Dominica

A view of the Caribbean island Dominica

Join the local population on Dominica in build-up celebrations to their November independence day all throughout October.

Interested in a variety of Caribbean music genres? Check out the three-night World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) . These genres derive from a combination of influences from Creole-speaking countries. You'll hear sounds from the Cadence-Iypso, Kompa, Zouk, Soukous, Bouyon and Zydeco genres. Food, drink and snack vendors are within the festival grounds, too.

Dominica's WCMF takes place Oct. 28 to Oct. 30. And don't forget about the many other concerts and celebrations taking place throughout the month. All said, it's certainly a great way to discover Dominica .

Diwali — Fiji

A view of an island in Fiji

At the end of October, Hindus celebrate their festival of lights, Diwali . With much of the population having Indian heritage, Fiji celebrates this holiday, too, but with a touch of South Pacific culture. The holiday is so ingrained in Fijian culture that even non-Hindus of the 300-island nation join in the festivities.

It's literally a blast all over the country, as fireworks are shot off and houses and businesses are festively lit. Hindu families perform "puja" ritual prayers to the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, Lakshmi. To echo that sentiment, people go on mini shopping sprees.

Diwali in Fiji takes place this year on Tuesday, Oct. 25. There are plenty of amazing resorts to choose from as well.

Goblins and Giggles — Orlando, FL

Gaylord Palms Orlando evening view

Looking to stay close to home? Head to Orlando for one of the best Halloween celebrations in Central Florida at a resort that really knows how to maximize holiday experiences . Goblins and Giggles actually kicks off on September 9, so guests have plenty of time to plan ahead and squeeze in as much spooktacular fun as the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center offers.

Families can book the weekend package, which includes room and tickets to the Ghoul School show, or the premium Saturday package, which includes the same, as well as passes to the Monster Mash Bash. And every young guest will also receive the booklet for the Halloween Hide and Seek Scavenger Hunt, which promises special prizes.
