In addition to traditional ceremonies, the festival also organizes traditional boat racing with many unique rituals.

Trung Cuu Festival (Vung Tau)

The festival is annually held at the Big House in Long Son commune, Vung Tau city from 8th – 9th day of 9th month in lunar calendar (September-October, varying by year) as a celebration for peace and to commemorate the merit of Mr. Tran. Although it is not as lavish as other festivals, the festival still attracts many pilgrims to offer incense and pray.

Father-Mother Palace Festival (Binh Thuan)

The Father-Mother Palace Festival is a cultural event of Binh Thuan province in a long time, taking place on every 14-15-16 th day of 9 th lunar calendar (September-October, varying by year) in Tan Tien commune, Lagi town. This is to pray for health and happiness of the family as well as for good business. In addition, the festival organizes many folk games and folk art events that are very attractive to visitors.

Halloween Day (31 Oct)

Originated from Western culture, Vietnamese also celebrate and enjoy Halloween parties, but the concept and main purpose are much different from Western Halloween. Halloween parties are mostly held at backpacker areas, usually in coffee shops, bars and restaurants. On the streets, many young people and children will draw/paint/decorate horror images on their faces and wear very strange customs to join this day.

Vietnam in October experiences both autumn and monsoon. Neither too hot nor too cold, the weather is fine for every traveller. It is one of the peak times to visit North Vietnam and Central Highlands for hiking and other recreational activities. Although Central Vietnam and some parts of South Vietnam are affected by monsoon and typhoons yet many alluring destinations in the North promise pleasant weather, especially the rural areas of Vietnam. Weather in Vietnam in October

October is the end of the wet month in the northern mountain region hence trekking is open once again in SaPa and Ha Giang. October marks a peak month to visit SaPa and areas around Mu Cang Chai. This is the month when golden rice crops sway under light showers of rain and are ready to be harvested. Occasional drizzling occur but Sun appears equally hence the weather is not bad. The average temperature remains around 26°C. By the end of the month, the temperature starts to drop. 

By October, North Vietnam is at the end of the monsoon phase with an average temperature of 25°C. Outdoors have plenty of warmth which tends to decrease by the end of the month. All the major cities in North Vietnam are good-to-go in the fall season. Hanoi and Halong Bay are great to explore under the soothing weather.

Central Vietnam experiences northeast monsoon in October at its peak. Central Vietnam has 24-27°C average temperatures with large amounts of rainfalls. Along with stormy weather, prolonged rains may cause floods in the coastal region. Dalat and Central Highlands become less affected by month’s end making outdoor sights possible while Hoi An, Phong Nha may get floods. Central Vietnam is prone to typhoons in autumn.

During October, rains affect South Vietnam less than the monsoon months, with an average temperature of 27°C. Southern beach resorts dazzle under the warm sun, visiting Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, and the islands of Phu Quoc & Con Dao will be fruitful. The end of the month is a good time to visit the Mekong Delta after a long wait of six months. October is also the month of Green Turtle's first hatchlings on Con Dao island. 

Events and Festivals in Vietnam in October

Tet Trung Thu is the mid-autumn festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every year. This festival is mainly for children to engage in various cultural dances and arts, and is also known as the festival of harvesting crops. The history of celebrating the festival is related to Emperor Duong Minh Hoang’s visit to the moon via Dien Phap Thien’s magic. The Emperor enjoyed the heavenly atmosphere and performances by the fairies on the moon. After he came back on Earth, he decided to celebrate the 15th day of the 8th lunar month under the moon and decorate houses and streets with lanterns. 

Star-shaped and Carp-shaped lanterns, Vietnamese mooncakes, traditional dances, mini-contests for children, and their cackles adorn the atmosphere of Vietnam. The major activities of the festival include worshipping the God of Earth (farmers and their families thank God for a successful harvest), funny-mask making, glittering star-shaped lantern making and processions, traditional dragon and lion dances, family gathering and making offerings to their ancestors, enjoying mooncakes together. Travelers can visit Hoi An to have a spectacular view of the streets and around the Japanese Covered Bridge on full moon night to enjoy the lantern lighting.

Cham Kate Festival is an important festival of the Cham ethnic group which is held in Ninh Thuan Province from the 30th day of the 6th month to the 2nd day of the 7th month according to the Cham calendar (around the end of September and the beginning of October). The festival comprises commemorative rites, remembrance of national heroes, offerings to deities, cultural art performances, processions, and prayers for health, happiness, and abundant crops. 

The festival takes place in Po Inu Nagar Temple in Ninh Phuoc District. Visitors can witness the festive aura here by attending the second day of the Kate Festival. Traditional art performances include Apsara dance, Ginang, and Paranung drum-beat, Saranai triumph while there are numerous competitions like weaving contest, carrying water jar on one’s head, football, singing.

Spectacular night view on the 14th night of every month in Hoi An, Vietnam is worth experiencing as the city celebrates the festival of lights. Lighting lanterns are considered to be good luck and fortune charm in Vietnam. Hoi An lantern festival is considered to be an incredible moment to follow the rituals of worshipping deceased relatives. The festival brings closeness and happiness and is a wise method to save electricity.

Visitors and locals gather at An Hoi Bridge and on the banks of Hoai River as the sunset begins, to enjoy the luring food of Vietnam. The view is the best at the ancient town area of Hoi An where natives light paper lanterns around 9 pm and hang on streets, bars, shops. Families give each other presents like flowers, foods, and fake money in the belief of future prosperity. The streets are sparkled with musicians, instrumentalists, poetry readings, and mini craft classes for kids too. Traffic is prohibited in the area allowing hassle-free movement. Not to worry if you are vegetarian as there are numerous vegetarian foods and mouth-watering snacks to grab.

• October almost marks an end to beach time and reopens the opportunity for hiking and other recreational activities in North Vietnam, especially in Hanoi, Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Halong Bay. Overall, it is a picturesque month in rural areas of Vietnam. 
• In Hanoi ‘milk flower’ blossoms and brims the streets with its unique scent. Tourists can plan to visit Hanoi around the Lantern festival to witness beautiful flower beds decorated on the streets along with colorful signboards.
• October attracts foreign tourists towards North Vietnam and some parts of South Vietnam still you can expect low airfares and cheap prices of hotels and accommodations but not in Hanoi.

Located in the Northwest Mountain region of Vietnam, this beautiful town SaPa has various small villages. SaPa is cool with an average temperature of 17°C but autumn winds make the surroundings more beautiful in October. There might occur drizzling but 4-5 hours of sunshine and fresh air make October the best month for trekking in Sapa.

Travelers must visit the ‘SaPa museum’ and ‘Cat Cat Village’ (one of the oldest villages of Sapa) to learn the history of people here and ‘Cloud Yard’ to compliment the beauty of clouds. SaPa gives an opportunity to hike Vietnam’s Highest Peak ‘Mt. Fansipan’ whose viewpoint is called Heaven's Gate. Not just this, visitors can do boating on SaPa Lake, have warm beverages, and taste the local cuisine or delicious desserts in restaurants. You can buy handicrafts from SaPa Market or visit ‘Ta Phin Village’ to witness Communal Church Singing - a marriage tradition. 3 or 4-star hotels are available at cheap rates in June, book your stay, and enjoy the beauty of hills.

2. Mai Chau

Mai Chau is a northwestern mountainous district in Hoa Binh Province. October is the peak tourist month in Mai Chau when the average temperature hovers around 28°C. Although there isn’t much to explore here yet, the peaceful and colorful environment of Mai Chau (home of Thai ethnic groups) is worth visiting in autumn. Pu Luong Nature Reserve is good for hiking and if you want to enjoy snow go for Deo Thung Khe. Stilt houses are the noteworthy architecture of the Mai Chau district.

• Other popular attractions include Go Lao Waterfall, Chieu Cave, Thung Ke Pass Flagpole.

3. Mu Cang Chai

Mu Cang Chai is a northwest mountainous rural district in Vietnam that creates jaw-dropping scenery in October which is a fall season here. You will see ready-to-harvest golden rice crops swaying proudly on the terraces. This is the high time to know the lifestyle of Mong Ethnic farmers.

Mu Cang Chai consists of many small villages having beautiful terraces and weather. Khau Pha Pass, called ‘Sky’s Horn’ develops magnificent scenery. There are other small villages in the city to visit to adore the beauty of paddy farming and to experience their local culture by the homestay. A visit to Mu Cang Chai is incomplete without visiting two of its breathtaking waterfalls - Mo and Phu Nu waterfalls. Mu Cang Chai has its market too.

4. Ninh Binh

Located in North Vietnam, Ninh Binh Province is famous for its Karst Landscape in Tam Coc. October is one of the best seasons to visit Ninh Binh because it is the rice harvest season. Hire a boat to see the limestone cliffs in Tam Coc, this two-hour excursion takes you through three natural caves - Hang Ca, Hang Hai, Hang Ba. A journey of about five hundred steps to the ancient temple on the hilltop - Hang Mua will lead to a panoramic view from Tam Coc. Do not miss Bai Dinh Pagoda, the largest pagoda in South East Asia. Van Long Nature Reserve is the place for keen birdwatchers and nature lovers as here you can spot local flora and fauna. Apart from all this, Ninh Binh offers a three-hour train ride “Reunification Express” (not an official name of a train) that takes you through the coastline of Vietnam from North to South.

5. Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province

In October, biodiversity is great in Cuc Phuong National Park located in Ninh Binh Province. You can trek through a grass jungle and observe ancient trees and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Vietnam’s oldest national park includes the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre where Monkeys, Langurs, and Gibbons were rescued and kept and the Turtle Conservation Centre. There is a Cave of Prehistoric Man where centuries-old skeletons, tools are preserved. Families must not miss a trip to the national park. Do not forget to apply mosquito repellent and wear good hiking shoes. 

Hanoi is the only capital of a country that isn't its largest city. Capital of Vietnam - Hanoi, is a place for every traveler. Hanoi’s weather in October is warm with a cold breeze when you can witness autumn. October is a peak month to explore Hanoi and to witness the blooming of ‘Milk Flower’ or Alstonia scholaris. Definitely taste ‘Com’ - green colored rice flake which originates from Vong Village. People in Hanoi give tribute to Ly Cong Uan King (who chose Hanoi as Vietnam’s capital over ten centuries ago) on the 10th of October.

From several historical museums to underrated monuments to extravagant nightlife, Hanoi offers everything all together. There’s a lot to do in Hanoi, in the morning travelers can visit historical sites and enjoy markets to save the nights for the view of Old Quarter Hanoi at weekend and Hoan Kiem Lake for a boat ride. Where St. Joseph’s Cathedral and OnePillar Pagoda are major sites for worshipping, there are Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hanoi Opera House, Thang Long water puppet Theatre, Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda that reflects Vietnamese culture. If you love museums you should not miss the National Museum of History, Vietnamese Women’s Museum and Hanoi Museum, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, and Thủy Cung Times City which is an aquarium. Families can visit Thu Le Zoo, Union Park, Hanoi Botanical Garden. To buy souvenirs, gifts, and to taste Vietnam’s cuisine, night markets are the best so hit Hanoi Night Market, Long Bien Market.

7. Ha Long Bay

Halong Bay located in North Vietnam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there’s much to explore and spend a soothing October here. The weather starts to cool down with fewer sunshine hours yet no daily downpours, so it isn’t a great time to get tanned on beaches and islands. Near the end, nights become chilly. Nevertheless, travelers can go for a cruise, swimming, cooking classes. It is a good month for kayaking and snorkeling.

There are caves to explore and floating villages to visit. Halong City (divided into East HaLong - Hon Gai and West HaLong - Bai Chay) in the North part of Halong Bay has an artificial beach 'Bai Chay Beach’ and a Bai Chai Market to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, gifts, or souvenirs. Amongst islands, Dau Be Island is famous for diving and swimming, Dau Go Island for its large and colourful caves and Fighting Cocks Island for its sunset view when purple-red colour sets across the sky and two large rocks in water appear as two fighting cocks. You can enjoy the top view of islands from seaplane rides as well. To enjoy the quieter part of Halong Bay, visit Lan Ha Bay renounced for white sandy beaches. You can enjoy swimming, rock climbing, sea kayaking, and visit Cai Beo Floating Village.

• Other popular attractions include HaLong Queen Cable Car, Sun World Halong Complex, Stacking Rocks, Tuan Chau Island, Cannon Fort.

8. Cat Ba Island, Halong Bay

Cat Ba Island is one of the most amazing and highly visited Islands connected to HaLong Bay. October is one of the less crowded months in Cat Ba Island and the best to visit if you love monsoon; the average temperature is around 26˚C. Although there are frequent and short-lasting rains in October, cancellation of voyages is rare. Also, in October, tourists can enjoy the splendid scenery by booking accommodations at low prices.

There are three famous sand beaches- Cat Ba 1, 2, and 3, enjoy the time under the sun or swim in the water. If you want to explore caves, visit Surprise Caves to enjoy the colorful atmosphere, Hospital Cave to learn how this secret hospital functioned during the Vietnamese War, Trung Tran Cave. There’s Cat Ba Island Resort which offers a water park and spa centers. Cat Ba National Park is home to native Cat Ba Langur, 1500 plant species, and over 280 fauna species, commonly seen mammals include civet, deer, macaques, and squirrels. Apart from going on a cruise and enjoying the beach, visitors can take part in Yoga Classes which is a popular activity here. To experience the raw culture of Cat Ba visit Viet Hai Village.

Da Lat, a city in Central Vietnam is recognized as a garland of flowers where the average temperature remains 23-degree celsius in October. Travelers get to enjoy the pleasant weather with light drizzling, adorning flowers everywhere. 

Da Lat showcases French Colonial times which can be explored in Colonial Palaces - Da Lat Palace I, II, III. Truc Lam Temple - Zen Buddhist Temple and Linh Phuoc Pagoda are the best places to adore the art along with worshipping. Get crazy in the Crazy House, a guest house with weirdly interstitial architecture. Natural beauty can’t be skipped in Da Lat, route your tour towards Datanla Waterfall, Valley of Love, Clay Tunnel, Elephant Waterfalls, Xuan Huong Lake. Not just this, the city offers specialized gardens - Dalat Flowers Garden, Zoodoo Garden, Giant Pumpkin Garden, Lavender DaLat Garden, Maple Leaf Garden. There’s plentiful flowers, fruits, fruit candies, coffee beans, vegetables to buy from DaLat central market. DaLat is a magnet for photographers to capture the flowery surroundings and spectrum cloudy sky.

• Other popular attractions include Dalat Railway Station, Clay Tunnel of DaLat, Smurf Village, Dalat Heaven Gate, Prenn Waterfall.

10. Ho Chi Minh City

In the Southern part of Vietnam, Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in the country. Travellers visit here every year majorly for diverse cuisine, magnetic nightlife, french architecture, and fascinating skyscrapers. This major city offers spectacular enjoyment spots - Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden, Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, Chu Chi Tunnel, and Buddhist Cultural Theme Park. Hit ‘Ban Than Market’, ‘Binh Tay Market’, ‘An Thong Market’ for shopping. The night is alive in Saigon through rooftop bars, lush nightclubs, casinos, music bars, and Ben Thanh Night Market.

11. Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc Island lies in Southwest Vietnam apart from the mainland. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is the largest island of Vietnam with its international airport. October is the beginning of peak tourist season in Phu Quoc as rains fade away and the beaches dazzle in the sunlight.

There are four major beaches - Bai Sao (silky white sand beach with starfishes spotted in crystal water), Hon Xuong Beach (white sandy small beach, perfect for snorkeling), Starfish Beach (white sand beach with floating eateries, red sea starfish being a picturesque) and Bai Truong also known as Long Beach. Long Beach is the main stop-spot for visitors because of the yellow sand, sailing, swimming, snorkeling, and beach massage. Apart from this, there is Phu Quoc National Park and Suoi Trang Waterfall which offer the perfect time for camping, trekking. 

The island is distributed in three different parts, out of which the downtown Duong Dong is highly visited for shopping. Duong Dong offers Duong Dong Market and Dinh Cau Night Market from where travelers can buy souvenirs, pearls, funky jewellery, and eat delicious seafood. Do not go back from Phu Quoc without buying the world's best fish sauce and Vietnam’s tastier black pepper.

• Other popular attractions include Vinpearl Safari, Sun World Hon Thom Nature Park, Trúc Lam Ho Quoc Zen Monastery.

12. Can Tho

Can Tho is the biggest city in the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. Famous for its floating market, Can Tho has a temperature around 31 degrees celsius in October when nights can be warm and sticky nevertheless it's a good month for travelling. Different-sized boats are adorned with vibrant flowers and fresh fruits in Cai Rang floating market. Some of the tropical fruits include dragon fruit, durian, jackfruit, pomelo. So, if you are a vegetarian or a botany lover, this is a place to visit in August.

Can Tho Bridge, Mai Khanh tourist village, Bang Lang Stork Garden are some of the outdoor attractions. The city also offers historic art displays at Binh Thuy ancient house and Can Tho Museum. Can Tho has tremendous sites of worshipping - Nam Nha Pagoda, Binh Thuy Temple, Quang Duc Pagoda.

Hello, My wife and I are considering a vacation tour of Vietnam, either this Autumn, October 2019 or next Spring, Feb/March 2020. We are amateur photographers and mainly interested to see the beautiful green landscapes in the highlands, historic and quaint old coastal towns, coastal sand dunes and the Mekong river delta. Weather Overview

One step to October is one step closer to autumn. The mild weather, sunny sky, and fresher air presents Vietnam with a wide range of flower kinds. Each part of the country is filled with a different blooming color, and all have their own unique feature.  If those scorching summer days are custom made for beach visits, then it is not overrated when saying October is the season of romance.

Temperature and humidity

During October, the Northern average temperature is 25 °C at day and can drop to under 20 °C at night. If you plan to make a camping trip in the mountains or just a late-night culinary tour in major cities, make sure to bring a cardigan or overcoat. There is still a small chance of rain in some higher-up land, but it will come and go quickly.

Cold air combined with tropical air turbulence in the East Sea makes the Central weather quite unpredictable. Heavy rainfalls or storms are guaranteed in early October, leading to flooding in some lowland cities.

Meanwhile, the Central Highlands still see great sunny days as they receive less sway from the tropical rains. However, it is wise to check the weather forecast before planning any travel trip to Central land in October.

If you want to avoid the rain almost entirely, head to the south as the entire region sees a dry and sunny season settling in. Accompanying it is the high UV level, so do prepare yourself with sunblock products like sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to make the most out of your South beach travel.

Hanoi Liberation Day

October 10th is an important anniversary in Hanoi. The day celebrates both the event of 1010 - when King Ly Thai To decided to move the capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Thang Long, which becomes Hanoi today - and the date that Hanoi declared freedom from French colonialism. Since then, on Hanoi Liberation Day, the city has held many cultural events and outdoors performances in the downtown areas such as Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, Ba Dinh Square and Ly Thai To Square.

Keo Pagoda festival - Nam Dinh and Thai Binh

Keo Pagodas are the one of its kind in Vietnam, holding 2 locations in Nam Dinh and the adjacent province of Thai Binh. It is one of the oldest religious architectures in Northern Vietnam, with a history dating back to over 400 years. Each year, at the full moon of the 9th lunar month (mostly falling in the middle of October), a festival is held at both Keo Pagodas to honor Buddha and celebrate the birth of the monk Khong Lo, who had successfully cured King Ly Nhan Tong from rare diseases and earned the title national doctor of Ly dynasty (Ly Quoc Su). Besides the spiritual rituals, the festival also has cultural activities such as dragon dance, boat racing, and Red river swimming competition.

Kin Lau Khau Mau festival - Lai Chau

Kin Lau Khau Mau is the thanksgiving festival of Thai ethnic people in Lai Chau. The festival takes place every 15th of the 9th lunar month. The event is held to celebrate a successful harvest, and for communities to get together. After the ritual ceremony ends, it is time for Gong (ethnic instrument) performance, Xoe and Sap dancing and other festive activities such as rice pounding, Con throwing. People will then enjoy traditional dishes like Khau Mau (new green rice), Khau Nua (sticky rice), Chin Giang (smoked beef), Pa Binh (grilled fish), and sip some straw wine together.

Kate festival - Ninh Thuan

This is the biggest festival of Cham ethnic in Ninh Thuan. The festival frequently takes place in early October in three areas, including Po Ina Nagar Temple - Ninh Phuoc, Po Klaong Garay tower - Phan Rang, and Cham tower and Po Rome tower - Ninh Phuoc. This festival is held to tribute the Cham gods, heroes, and ancestors. During October, every Cham village will be filled with the sound of Saranai trumpets, Ginang drums, and the dazzling dances from beautiful Cham women in their traditional clothes.

Halloween is a new “imported” event in Vietnam. Despite that, you can still find the country immersed in the spooky atmosphere and major streets packed with children wearing cute costumes to go "trick or treat." Many restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues also offer special events for guests on this day.

Every year in late October, the streets of Hanoi are engulfed with the tiny but glamorous daisy. Walking around the Old Quarter or West Lake areas, you will find street vendors carrying daisies for sale. The flower's white color lightens up the city and brings to it a romantic feeling in the golden autumn.

It is the perfect time to take photos of the poetic streets with local girls wearing ao dai while carrying a bouquet of daisies in their hands.

The first impression that Binh Lieu gives its visitors is the endlessly white reeds fields, covering both sides of the small dirt road, also known as dinosaur spine because of its spiky terrain. Another destination in the North that’s worth considering for October road trip is Moc Chau. The northern highland is chilly with fewer sun rays but lots of mist and white canola flowers. You should bring with you a jacket or raincoat to prepare for the unpredictable weather. Other than that, it is the ideal time to experience the highland culture through visiting mountain markets and tasting authentic ethnic cuisine with Tam Giac Mach cake, Thang Co, and corn wine.

Witness the golden fields come to life in the Central Highlands

Gia Lai is a recommended place in Central Vietnam to travel to in October. This is the time when Gia Lai has just ended the rainy season and is welcoming the dry months. The weather is comfortable enough to make a leisure trip to explore the beauty of golden shower tree flowers. The best time to witness the blooming gold is at dawn, when the sun shines through the dense foliage, blend in one with the flowers to dispel the cold of morning fog.

Like Da Lat, Gia Lai during this time also has the appearance of the wild sunflowers. Every road leads to the rural tribes, on the streets and over the hillside are expected with bright gold color. But unlike the busy Dalat, visitors can feel the pine forest wind by looking at the calm surface of Bien Ho (Ocean Lake), visiting the majestic K50 waterfall, and praying at Minh Thanh pagoda without the crowd.

Experience the emerald water of the South

Contrary to the central beaches, which have just entered the rainy season, Phu Quoc enters its best season of the year. Phu Quoc in October has lesser rain, brighter blue sky, calmer emerald sea, and milder temperature from 20 to 30 degrees celsius.

To extend your trip to the South in October, Dong Thap is a good choice. In October, the water rising season, water lilies will bloom across every canal surface of the province. Growing in the green swamp but the flowers are pure white, making the river delta more lively. October is one of the best months to visit North Vietnam, these are really mild sunny and dry days, with high blue skies. With an average temperature of about 28°C, it is ideal to participate in several outdoor activities such as walking, kayaking, cycling or even swimming without getting too tired. Ben Tre is an island in between the four rivers of Tien, Ham Luong, Ba Lai and Co Chien in the southwest of Vietnam. That alluring scent of pho was one of few constants as I traveled through vastly different landscapes, trekking through verdant rice terraces, dodging motorbikes en route to speakeasies, and standing face to face with an endangered monkey in my oceanfront outdoor shower — all within the span of two weeks. 

Vietnam is more than 1,000 miles long, a spectacularly slim country that’s only 30 miles wide at its narrowest point. Every region boasts its own allure as well as its own climate, which means you’ll need to carefully consider the time of your visit based on your desired itinerary. 

“As the climate varies so much from north to south, there will always be somewhere worth going in Vietnam, whatever time of year you travel,” says Melissa Matthews, regional director for Southeast Asia and North America at luxury travel company Red Savannah .

Many visitors tend to prioritize other attractions as they make their way south, so natural wonders in the north like Ban Gioc Waterfall and the network of caves in Quang Binh remain less busy.

No matter when you visit, you’ll always find good weather somewhere in Vietnam. “Vietnam is a beautiful country with tropical weather, making it suitable for visits throughout the year,” says Kreuz. 

For those hoping to see Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and everything in between, it’s best to go in the dry season. “February and March are the best months to see the entire country from north to south in relatively dry weather,” says Matthews. She notes that Tet, or Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls during this time and can last for up to 10 days. “During this time, most of the key sights in the cities are closed, as everyone goes back to their family villages to celebrate,” she says. She recommends heading to the beach during the festival and bookending your trip with time in the major cities. 

For a dry and temperate trip to Sa Pa or Hanoi in the north, head there from September to November, or in March and April, she suggests. A sunny beach visit to Hoi An or Nha Trang in the central region is best from April to August, while the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc Island in the south are warmest from October to April. 

Vietnam is a relatively affordable destination all year long, with abundant and economical street food and comfortable hotels for all budgets. For your best chance at scoring low-cost flights and accommodations, consider traveling outside the peak tourist season. April, May, October, and November are excellent times, as you’ll still find warm weather throughout the country, but will have fewer tourists to contend with.

A visit to the verdant, terraced rice fields of Sa Pa are a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Overlooking the Muong Hoa Valley, the hills are surrounded by spectacular mountains and home to dozens of communities, including the Hmong and Red Dao peoples — many of whom open their homes for overnight stays and lead private or group trekking tours. You can reach this famed hiking destination by car from Hanoi in five hours, by a bus in six to eight hours, or on an overnight sleeper train. 

Matthews notes that this region tends to get colder from December to February, so it’s best to plan a trip from September to November or in March and April. Harvest season is also an unforgettable time to visit: In late August through September, the vibrant green hillsides turn a voluptuous shade of gold as the rice ripens.

Ha Long Bay, with its emerald waters and limestone towers, is one of the primary tourist destinations in Vietnam, and as such, has become increasingly overrun with cruise operators leading day tours. For a less crowded experience, consider booking an overnight cruise that will take you deeper into the bay — or to the equally beautiful, slightly less populated neighboring Lan Ha Bay. (I splurged for a two-night cruise with Orchid Cruises , one of the more luxurious tour operators). 

March, April, October, and November are ideal months to visit, as they tend to bring warm and sunny weather without as much humidity. You’ll also avoid the peak season, so while it’s still bound to be busy, you can enjoy kayaking through the tranquil waters and hiking Cat Ba island in relative peace. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also a great opportunity for a snorkeling or scuba diving adventure.

While Vietnam’s varied climate means there’s never really a bad time to visit, you may want to avoid traveling to the country during monsoon season. 

“When the monsoon hits, it is hard and heavy and very humid,” says Matthews, who suggests sightseeing in cities during the wet season, where you can still visit museums and historic temples between rainstorms. “Avoid the mountainous region of Sa Pa and definitely don’t book a cruise in Ha Long Bay, as storms will occur and boats are grounded,” she warns. 

If you do decide to travel during the rainy season, it’s best to remain flexible in your planning, says Kreuz. “Consider not booking everything in advance due to unpredictable weather,” he says, adding that staying open-minded may help you to take advantage of potential low-season discounts. 

Tet, which marks the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is another tricky time to visit, as many landmarks and businesses close for a week or more to celebrate. It typically lands in late January or early February — this year, it falls on Feb. 10.

Hay there! Unsure about visiting Vietnam in October ? The country is as little as 50 kilometres (31 miles) across but wide about 600 kilometres (370 miles) in the north. Every month is good to visit and so, just like the leaves in autumn, you’ll fall for it! 

Ok, enough with the autumn puns. Let us tell you what places should definitely be on your list if you visit Vietnam in October. But first, let’s look at Vietnam’s regions, because this “little big country” – 1.000 km (600 miles) in length, is as diverse in weather and climate as it gets.

This easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula can be divided into 3 parts. How are they in October?

Northern Region (Hanoi, Ha Giang) – if you will visit in October, you will experience the end of the hot and humid season. Temperatures depend on the place (hilly means more chilly) but the usual range is 20°-24°C (68°-75°F)

Central Region – if you really want to visit here in October, you will experience a wet season. However, do not let that scare you. There is a possibility of monsoons too but if you consult local experts from local travel agencies while planning a trip (doesn’t cost a dime) you will be fine 🙂 Temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F-77°F)

Southern Region (Can Tho, Phu Quoc, Con Dao, Dalat) – if you will visit at the very beginning of October, you might experience the end of the hot and humid season. Dry and fresh (and most popular season) is from October to April. There is a possibility of rain but nothing that would melt you, sweet traveller. It is warm too, around 28 – 30°C (86°F)

TOP DESTINATIONS

Must definitely be on your list! Why? It is the country’s capital, plus October 10 marks an important anniversary, a day when King Ly Cong Uan chose Hanoi to be the capital of Vietnam in 1010.

Another important date for Vietnamese is October 20, Women’s day. You will see many flowers being sold on the streets and men buying them for their special loved ones.

Temperatures are milder than September and there is a light breeze. The averages are 23°C (73°F) at night and 28 °C (82°F) in the day time. There is less humidity too.

One other thing you may notice by your nose is the smell of the flowers of the blackboard tree, also known as the devil’s tree. Its distinct smell engulfs little Hanoi as the trees are planted everywhere. It is so overwhelming at times that there are actually complaints from the Vietnamese! Still, enjoy the one-of-a-kind smell of Fall while it lasts. Once October ends, the blackboard tree’s seeds also fall all over the streets, fly into your house and get stuck on your clothes. One of the most beautiful roads in the world, friendly ethnic people, amazing views with mountains, rocks and green fields… and Tam Giac Mach (Fagopyrum esculentum flowers) or if you do not want to break your tongue, triangle buckwheat flowers. But how about weather and temperature situation? From 26 to 33 °C (78-91°F), with around 40% chance of rain. But worry not, it does not rain for long, maximum an hour. It is hot and humid though, so prepare spare clothes, sunscreen, water and repellent (we recommend DEET or lemon-scented spray)

Beaches – Phu Quoc or Con Dao in October?

Craving a beach? Central beaches like Hoian or Nha Trang still have a wet season. But on Phu Quoc , the biggest Vietnamese island, the dry season starts at the end of October and lasts till March. But even early October is great, and psshhht: prices of flights, services and accommodations are lower! Not every day is a guaranteed to be “beachy” so as said before, chances increase towards the end of the month.

Afraid to go to Phu Quoc in between wet and dry season and getting soaked? We have another local tip for you: Con Dao island is considered less touristy and better for snorkelling. If you contact a travel agency or book a place on your own, pick one in South West area, not North, as North has more raindrops. Temperatures range from a max. 29˚C (84°F) and a minimum of 24˚C (75°F) Humidity levels are very high, at 85 %.

Our secret tip: Have lunch at Con Dao Market. And as a snack, snatch some hat bang kho (dried country almond) since it is a speciality of the island. Do you love animals? Turtles nest and hatch on Con Dao from May to October! Bay Canh Islet inside the Con Dao National Park is actually the largest marine turtle conservation area in Vietnam.

Located 1500m above the sea level, Dalat enjoys a cool climate all year round. Surrounded by mountains and pine forests, the rainy season here lasts from April to November. So yes, you can expect raindrops in October but nothing terrible. Moreover, the air is fresh and cool and if you visited huge cities like Saigon or Hanoi before, you will love the refreshing feeling. Temperatures are at about 10-16°C (50-61°F) so pack trousers and jumpers. If you are riding a bike, pack an extra layer. Dalat is the coolest city 🙂

Generally, October marks the end of autumn in our country, the weather is like a mixture of late autumn and early winter. The average temperature throughout the country is about 26°C – 27°C, which is really cool and very comfortable. There will be a lot of rain in the beginning of October and the rainfall will decrease strongly at the end of the month. So, if you want to visit Vietnam in October, the period from October 20 to 31 should be the best.

In the North: Cool, chilly with some drizzle

In northern Vietnam, October is clearly the end of the rainy season, the weather is cool, chilly with some drizzle. Although there may be some flooding at the beginning of this month, the second half of October sees a decrease in heat and humidity. The average temperature varies between 23°C and 26°C with a pleasant atmosphere.

The beginning of October is a particularly picturesque time of year to visit remote mountainous areas such as Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Ha Giang, as it is the harvest time and you can see the beautiful landscape of golden rice terraces. In addition, the weather is dry and sunny (temperatures of 16-17°C), which is perfect for adventure activities such as trekking. On the other hand, if you are planning a Ha Long Bay cruise this month, book in the second half of October to avoid the stormy season.

In the Center: Not ideal to visit

Unfortunately, October is not really a good time to travel in central Vietnam. Although the average temperature here is 24°C to 27°C, which seems comfortable enough, it is in the middle of the rainy season here, and all you may see is heavy rain and severe flooding or storms. Due to bad weather, Phong Nha caves are inaccessible, while heavy storms may harm you in Danang and Hoi An becomes the Venice of Vietnam due to floods. Therefore, if you have a travel plan in October, it is better to avoid visiting the center of the country.

In the South: Good time for a beach holiday

In southern Vietnam, October is the moment of change from the hot and dry summer, as rainfall continues to decrease, especially towards the end of the month. Temperatures slowly rise towards 20°C and sunny days are frequent. The average temperature of this month reaches 27°C and it is ideal for a beach holiday . Many tourists visit Phu Quoc Island and the coastal town of Phan Thiet at this time, as it rains less and the sea is quite warm, especially towards the end of the month.

Vietnamese women’s day (20/10).

Vietnamese Women’s Day is held on October 20 every year. Established on October 20, 1930, following the creation of the Vietnamese Women’s Union on the same day, this important day reminds the Vietnamese people every year that women also came together and fought for the country’s independence. Since then, they have continued to assert their rights, just like men. On this special day, women receive gifts, flowers and congratulations from their friends.

Kate Festival (Binh Thuan)

The Kate festival, or also called Mbang Kate, is organized by the Cham people for 3 days in early October. This event takes place in a large space in the three Champa towers (Po Nagar, Po Klong Garai and Po Rome). This festival is to commemorate their heroes Po Klong Garai and Po Rome, as well as the deaths in the families. In addition, it is an opportunity for the people to relax, meet and wish each other good luck for the future.

Kate Festival

This is one of the biggest and most important events of the Cham people in Vietnam. Therefore, it is a good opportunity for visitors to experience the beauty of Cham culture, from the architecture to the costumes to the traditional instruments and songs used to honor their kings in the past. Each tower’s Kate festival begins at the same time on the same day, and on the following day, villages and families begin to organize their own rites. During the rite, people call upon their ancestors and gods with the help of a shaman, then pray for health and prosperity. The festivals after the rites are a combination of traditional music and dance, including such activities as performances of Ginang drum and Saranai flute or the traditional dance of Cham girls.

The further away the destination is, the more beautiful the view of the ripe rice fields. You can start your trip in Ninh Binh with the classic beauty of flat rice fields, then go further to see the special landscape of golden terraces in Mu Cang Chai or Ha Giang.

6. Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island will be drier from late October. You can enjoy less rain, blue skies, and mild temperatures. The sea becomes calmer and good for swimming, diving, or snorkeling.

On Phu Quoc Island, night squid fishing is a unique experience. When night falls, night fishing adventures begin. You could take a boat to the fishing area, learn the techniques from the crew, catch a squid, and taste it fresh onboard.

Crowds and Costs Increase

October is a better time to travel to Vietnam in general. Traveler numbers increase everywhere except in central Vietnam, where the rains hit a torrential peak.

In northern Vietnam , autumn scenery attracts more visitors. During this short high season, costs will increase noticeably, and you are suggested to book hotels at least two weeks before arrival.

Visitor numbers also increase in southern Vietnam , but it is not crowded . And the costs are still low .

It's always bright and sunny somewhere in Vietnam, with colourful festivals and cheery celebrations scattered on the calendar throughout the year. Watch mind-blowing fireworks light up the summer skies in Đà Nẵng, or fill your lungs with the fragrance of ripe rice in Sapa during harvest season -- below are the best places to go in Vietnam from January to December. 

January .

Kick off the new year with a glorious marathon in Mộc Châu. In January, this mountain town becomes a fairytale land covered in white plum blossoms. The Vietnam Trail Marathon runs deep into the hills, past tidy tea plantations and blossoming orchards. Stay at an ethnic homestay to learn more about the local way of life and join tasty home-cooked meals. 

February 

Springtime means flowers are blooming in Đà Lạt . Pink cherry blossoms line the streets and lakes in the Central Highlands. Đà Lạt enjoys pleasant breezes and cool air all year round, but February skies are among the bluest and clearest. Lose yourself in nature and spend a night camping by Tuyền Lâm Lake, or have a picnic day on Thiên Phúc Đức Hill. 

March 

After months of rain, Hội An is fresher than ever in early March. Gentle winds and sunny days make exploring the rice paddies and Ancient Town a joy. Walk through the yellow alleyways, relax in a teahouse, or ride a bicycle to the beach. If you happen to be here on a full moon, stroll the Thu Bồn River after dark to see magical reflections of the moon and lanterns on the water. 

April 

The amazing Huế Festival and Huế Craft Festival alternatively take place every year in late April, making this a fantastic time to visit Vietnam's former imperial capital. The festivals’ activities celebrate Huế art, culture, and heritage with dazzling performances. April is also a perfect month weather-wise for Huế, with endless sunshine and clear skies.

An annual triathlon set against a gorgeous backdrop of coastal scenery, Ironman Vietnam welcomes athletes and travellers every May in Đà Nẵng City . Take it easy after the event with a visit to Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary and the Cham Museum of Sculpture to learn about the ancient Kingdom of Champa, or stay to catch the jaw-dropping firework festival in June. 

Summer in Hạ Long Bay means sunbathing on the top deck of a cruise, swimming off limestone islets, and filling up on freshly made squid patties. Take a break from the sun and see millennia-old rock formations up close in Hạ Long’s many caves. A seaplane ride will give you an incredible bird's eye view of the famous bay, its floating villages and dramatic karsts. 

The beaches in Central Vietnam are a dream in sunny July, with clear blue skies, glistening waters, and warm sandy shores. Hop on a train and head to Nha Trang for a quick and easy beach getaway. Island-hopping here is simply a must, with protected coral reefs and dreamy beaches. Take a mineral-rich mud bath before popping out for a seafood dinner by the ocean. 

August 

Sapa ’s rice terraces put on a breathtaking golden coat in August, when the stalks of rice hang heavy with ripe grains. This ‘golden season' sees light drizzles in the early morning and late at night, and evenings cool enough for cozy campfires and hotpots. After a day-long hike, treat yourself to a rejuvenating herbal bath and tuck yourself in at an ethnic homestay.  

September 

Autumn in Hanoi is so beautiful there are countless Vietnamese songs, poems, and short stories written about the capital city in this season. Hail a cyclo for a ride around the Old Quarter, find hidden cafés in French villas, or take a walk under falling leaves. Hanoi is also a great place to celebrate National Day on September 2, with flying flags down every street. 

October 

Pù Luông in October is a great choice if you’re a fan of lush vistas and nature retreats. Book a stay in a stilt house facing the valley, and wake up to fragrant rice terraces outside your window. While you’re in Pù Luông you might like to trek to waterfalls, or take a textile workshop with ethnic Thai people. Of course, doing nothing in a beautiful place is a great option too.

November 

Hà Giang is famed for its awe-inspiring Nho Quế River, panoramic mountain passes, bustling ethnic markets, and the buckwheat flower festival in November. Next to rugged mountains, these buckwheat hills in full bloom are one of Vietnam's most picturesque scenes. You can never pack too many memory cards for your camera on a Hà Giang trip. 

December 

For a tropical Christmas with lapping waves, fresh coconuts, and powdery sand, put Phú Quốc Island in your December travel plans. With gentle breezes and water temperature just right for swimming and diving, Phú Quốc is a wonderful spot to celebrate the holidays with your loved one(s). Catch the island’s famous purple sunsets -- the perfect way to end the year.

Things continue to improve in the north with clearer skies, less rainfall and a break to the high humidity of recent months. In the centre it’s the opposite story with high rainfall and the chance of stormy weather. Whilst the rain tumbles in the centre, the south starts to see a change for the good with less rainfall and a promise of the returning summer. Good conditions for adventure activities also return in the mountains of the north and in the Central Highlands.

Unfollow the herd - travel in Vietnam during October and enjoy fewer crowds, better availability, and help to spread the economic benefits of tourism.

October sees the end of the wet season in the north, and as the month moves on the temperature drops, as does the rainfall, especially in the second half of the month as the cooler, dry winter approaches (avg temp: 26°C). In the far north, the weather in the mountainous regions of Sapa and Ha Giang is dry and clear, promising some of the best trekking conditions of the year. Early October is a particularly picturesque time of year to visit Mu Cang Chai, as the region's endless rice fields turn a golden colour, ready to harvest.

Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon, Dalat & Central Highlands

The rainfall in the centre of the country is close to its peak and heavy storms can occur. Hoi Ai in particular is prone to flooding in October. The temperatures in Hoi An and Hue differ slightly with Hoi An and Danang being the hotter end of the Hai Van Pass (avg temp: 24- 27°C). Further to the south the beaches of Nha Trang will be seeing plenty of rain with nearly half the city's annual rainfall falling in October and November. The heavy rains in Dalat and the Central Highlands start to break, especially towards the end of the month when good conditions for outdoor activity return. However, weeks of heavy rainfall could mean that some of the Phong Nha caves are inaccessible and not possible to visit.  

Ho Chi Minh City, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Mekong Delta, Ho Tram & Long Hai, Con Dao & Phu Quoc

October is the month for change in the south with rainfall on the decline especially towards the end of the month as the region moves towards its dry, hot summer months (avg temp: 27 °C). The southern beaches of Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, and the islands of Phu Quoc & Con Dao are starting to recover from the winter months and the sun starts to shine once again, especially towards the end of the month. Around the island of Con Dao, Green Turtle hatchlings continue to emerge from their nesting grounds under the sand and make their first steps to the sea.

Vietnam is an astonishing mix of natural highlights and cultural diversity.

The scenery ranges from jagged peaks seen from winding mountain passes down to verdant paddy fields painted every shade of green in the palette, while Vietnam's long history and multicultural population (with over 50 ethnic minority groups) make a trip here rich in heritage.

Outdoor lovers can get their teeth into the countryside within the numerous national parks, where hiking, biking, and kayaking are popular things to do, but Vietnam's most famous natural tourist attraction, the spectacular karst seascape of Halong Bay, is one natural sight that even the more slothful can experience up close on a cruise.

While the rural areas brim with lush panoramas, the big cities buzz with contemporary life and provide ample opportunities to get stuck into Vietnam's tasty culinary highlights.

This fascinating country is full of surprises and is one of Southeast Asia's most underrated destinations. Plan your sightseeing with our list of the best places to visit in Vietnam.

The karst seascape of Halong Bay is one of the best places to visit in the world for spellbinding sea views and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thousands of limestone islands sit within this bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, eroded into jagged pinnacles by wind and water action over millennia.

With the bay's scenery best seen by boat, this is prime cruising territory. Opt for at least an overnight tour to see Halong Bay's iconic views as a day trip doesn't do it justice.

There are plenty of caves in the bay that can be entered including the Hang Sung Sot, with three mammoth caverns, and the Hang Dao Go, with superbly weird stalagmites and stalactites. For most people though, the highlight is simply cruising amid the karsts and soaking up the changing scenery of pinnacles as you pass by.

There are plenty of different cruise tours to choose from. Check the different itineraries offered before booking as many travelers have left Halong Bay underwhelmed by their cruise.

Author's Tip: If possible, book a tour that takes in neighboring Lan Ha Bay as well as Halong Bay. The karst scenery is just as dramatic here but fewer cruise trips visit. And check if your cruise offers included activities such as guided kayaking (which allows you to experience an up-close view of the scenery).

For big city fans, no visit to Vietnam is really complete without a visit to Ho Chi Minh City, the buzzing commercial hub of the country.

The streets are an insane clog of motorbikes and cars, the restaurant and café scene is incredibly cosmopolitan, and the shopping is the best in the country.

At its center is Dong Khoi, a relatively small and easily navigable central district, which holds most of the city's sights.

Here, you'll find the HCMC Museum, with a brilliant collection of artifacts that weaves together the story of the city, and the grand Notre Dame Cathedral, built in the late 19th century.

Check out the old district of Da Kao nearby for some of the best surviving examples of the city's French colonial architecture and also to visit the Jade Emperor Pagoda with its dazzling array of Buddhist and Taoist religious iconography.

Afterwards, the History Museum is a must-do for history fans with stacks of relics on display from various archaeological sites.

For many visitors, the two big-hitter tourist attractions not to miss are just a little out of the center, along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street. The Reunification Palace, then known as Independence Palace, was the residence for South Vietnam's president. It's chiefly famous as the spot where North Vietnam's tanks stopped on 30 April 1975, officially ending the war. It's a completely fascinating place to visit complete with 1960s furnishings still in situ.

Nearby is the War Remnants Museum, which although very obviously biased, paints a disturbing picture of the brutality of war and the many atrocities committed by US Forces during their Vietnam campaign.

One of Vietnam's most historic towns, Hue is packed to the brim with relics from the reign of the 19th-century Nguyen emperors.

Sitting along the banks of the gorgeous Perfume River, the Imperial Enclosure is a huge site set within walls that sprawl for 2.5 kilometers.

While touring the grounds check out the gorgeous Ngo Mon Gate, the Thai Hoa Palace with its finely lacquered interior detailing, the Dien Tho Residence where the Queen Mothers would live, and the Halls of Mandarins with its preserved ceiling murals.

A dazzling number of historic sites lie outside the Imperial Enclosure walls as well.

One of the nicest ways of visiting a collection of outlying sites is by taking a riverboat cruise on the Perfume River. A day cruise can take you to visit several royal tombs along with some pagodas.

If you're short on time, the best tomb to visit is the Tomb of Tu Doc and the most important pagoda in the area is the Thien Mu Pagoda, with its tower that soars for 21 meters high.

One of the best places to visit in Vietnam for caving, World Heritage-listed Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a dramatic karst mountain formation honeycombed with huge caverns, which are home to superb stalactite and stalagmite displays.

It's best known for its caving activities , which range from multi-day hiking and caving tours for the more adventurous, to simpler half-day trips to caves with easy access provided by boat trips and modern boardwalks, but the national park also offers mountain biking and trekking activities.

The most popular destinations within the park are the Paradise Cave , which extends for a staggering 31 kilometers below ground, and the Phong Nha Cave, where the interior is accessed by boat. Half-day tours can be easily arranged once you're in the area.

The national park's most renowned caverns though are Son Doong Cave (the world's largest cave) , and the Tu Lan Cave with its cavern river system. Access to these, and to certain other caves in the park are restricted to organized tours (ranging from one-day to multi-day expeditions) which are all run by Phong Nha's expert adventure tour company Oxalis . It's well worth booking in advance to secure your spot.

To make the most of your time here, time your visit for outside the rainy season, which runs from October to December, when many of the national park's caves are closed to the public.

You can access Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park from Son Trach (also known as Phong Nha village).

Surrounded by lush jungle-covered mountains, My Son is a ruined Cham era temple city that dates from the 4th century.

This old Hindu religious center was still very much in use during the 7th to 10th centuries and only fell into complete decline and abandonment during the 13th century.

There are around 20 temple structures still standing here, all built of brick or sandstone blocks and showing interesting influences from various Asian empires, including Indian and Malay.

Note that the temples of Group B are the oldest, while Group A once contained the site's most important monument but was destroyed deliberately by US forces during the Vietnam War.

A good museum on-site houses plenty of information on the Cham.

Access to My Son is from Hoi An.

Beautiful Hoi An is the most atmospheric city in Vietnam, with bags of surviving historic architecture.

The old town quarter is a joy to explore, packed to the brim with well-preserved merchant houses that hark back to Hoi An's trading center heyday of the 15th century, when the town was a major meeting point for Japanese and Chinese merchants who flocked here for the local silks.

Plenty of the old merchant houses have been opened to the public, so you can get a taste of these times. The best is 17th-century Tan Ky House, with fascinating architectural and decorative elements.

Hoi An's major symbol is the delightful Japanese Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street, while nearby, the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation is the old town's most highly decorated temple.

There are numerous small pagodas and museums dotted about town, but Hoi An's true charm is found in simply rambling the old town streets admiring the well-preserved facades.

The verdant rice field countryside surrounding Sapa, bordered by the jagged peaks of the Hoang Lien Mountains (often still known by their French colonial era name of the Tonkinese Alps), are home to Vietnam's most beautiful rural vistas.

The deep valleys here are home to a diverse mix of the country's ethnic minorities, including the Hmong, Giay, and Red Dzao people, while the rippling hills are terraced with rice fields and overlooked by the country's tallest peak, Fansipan Mountain.

This is the top trekking destination in Vietnam with oodles of options to trek or day hike between tiny villages and experience the staggering mountain views.

Sapa itself is the main base here - an old hill station and now a bustling and forever growing tourist center that is a stark contrast to the sumptuous tranquil countryside right on its doorstep.

Author's Tip: Keen trekkers looking for more of northern Vietnam's lush mountain vistas may want to skip the busy Sapa scene completely and nudge further 95 kilometers northwest to Bac Ha , where the terraced hill views on hikes between hill villages are just as beautiful. Bac Ha's Sunday market is also a very popular day trip from Sapa.

Vietnam's capital is the frenetic heartbeat of the nation and a place that befuddles travelers as much as it charms them.

The motorbike frenzy, pollution, and constant clamor of street vendors can get too much for some travelers, but if you want to dive into Vietnamese city life, Hanoi is the place to do it.

The old town quarter has plenty of dilapidated charm on offer, while history fans should make a beeline here simply to see the bundle of excellent museums.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Vietnam Fine Art Museum are both brilliant introductions to the diverse artistry of the country, while the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is an important tribute to the founder of modern Vietnam.

Author's Tip: It's well worth adding extra time into your itinerary to use Hanoi as a base for exploring the many sights within day tripping distance. In particular, the Tay Phuong and Thay Pagodas (30 kilometers west from the central city), Co Loa Citadel (24 kilometers northeast), and the Huong Pagoda (also known as the Perfume Pagoda; 60 kilometers southwest).

For sandy fun in Vietnam, Nha Trang is king. The well-maintained beach trundles for six kilometers along the shoreline of central Nha Trang city and during summer is jam-packed with local families on vacation, as well as foreign visitors.

There is excellent swimming here with designated swimming areas and manicured lounging areas that make this a great option for relaxing days soaking up the sun and sand.

If you do get bored of sunbathing, the ancient Po Nagar Cham Towers are just to the north across the Xom Bong Bridge and have been used as a place of worship here since at least the 7th century (with some historians saying the site itself has been a place of active worship since much earlier).

There is also an excellent museum dedicated to the work of Alexandre Yersin who discovered the cause of the bubonic plague and founded Nha Trang's Pasteur Institute (which still carries out vaccination programs in Vietnam today).

An absolutely fascinating experience for all travelers, not just those interested in Vietnam's modern military history, the Cu Chi Tunnels are an extensive tunnel network that during the war, stretched for more than 250 kilometers, allowing VC troops to operate and communicate in the area surrounding Ho Chi Minh City.

Two short sections of the network can be visited with a guide who'll take you down into the narrow unlit confines, which definitely are not for claustrophobia sufferers.

You will literally be crawling on your hands and knees and some points. You can access the tunnels at either Ben Dinh village (the more popular choice) or Ben Duoc village.

Tranquil Ba Be National Park is absolutely stunning with the three interlinked Ba Be Lakes at its heart, rimmed by jagged karst peaks and thickly forested slopes.

Most visitors come here to take peaceful boat trips or kayak on the lake and explore the caves full of stalactites and stalagmites in the vicinity, but for the more active, there's also excellent hiking and trekking in the hills here between ethnic minority villages.

This is one of the most peaceful spots in Vietnam, and travelers who spend the night here sleep in traditional stilt-house homestay accommodation along the lakeshore, allowing an experience of simple rural life.

The far south of Vietnam is where the mighty Mekong River finally finds its way to the sea in a maze of waterways that crisscross the floodplain.

Incredibly lush, with paddy field vistas and mangroves, and full of local life, with chaotic floating markets to explore by boat, the delta is one of the most interesting regions for travelers to discover.

Can Tho is the most popular town to use as a base, as it's close to the floating markets of Phong Dien and Cai Rang, while boat trips from Ca Mau allow you to explore the U Minh Mangrove Forest and Cau Mau Nature Reserve.

This area of Vietnam is one of the best to visit for keen bird watchers and nature lovers , as it is home to both Tra Su Bird Sanctuary Forest and Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary.

One of Vietnam's major centers for activities and adventure travel attractions, Cat Ba Island sits on the western edge of Halong Bay.

This is the best place to visit if you want to organize cruises and kayaking trips in Lan Ha Bay, which lies off Cat Ba's southern coast. Lan Ha Bay is a less visited seascape of karst islets and outcrops that makes for a quieter alternative to Halong Bay.

Off the water, much of Cat Ba's dense jungle interior is part of Cat Ba National Park, where hikers can spot plentiful birdlife, as well as animals such as macaques.

For many visitors, though, Cat Ba is all about climbing opportunities. Climbing excursions here utilize both the island's limestone cliffs and Lan Ha Bay's outcrops, providing experiences to suit both complete climbing beginners and experienced climbers.

The emerald-green karst mountain landscapes along Ha Giang's mountain passes make this far-north province prime territory for scenic road-tripping by either motorbike or car.

In particular, the twisty Quan Ba Pass between Ha Giang town and Tam Son provides panoramic vistas of the karst plateau and its jagged limestone outcrops, while the zigzagging Mai Pi Leng Pass between Dong Van and Meo Vac offers dizzying views of the lush mountain scenery and narrow valleys below.

Time your visit to coincide with one of the area's market days, when traders from the surrounding mountain villages pile into town. Dong Van's Sunday market is one of the best.

Sitting 45 kilometers off the southern coast of the country, in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is a densely forested island, speckled by sweeps of white-sand beach that attract plenty of sunseekers during the winter dry season.

Dry season (November to May) is also when the island's underwater and on-the-water tourism attractions spring into action, with plenty of dive sites in the waters just offshore, as well as opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, and boat trips.

Many of the main boat excursions head to the An Thoi Islands, just to the south of Phu Quoc, which is home to the best snorkeling in the area.

Off the water, the Phu Quoc cable-car provides bird's-eye views for eight kilometers, soaring over the seascape and islands, all the way from Phu Quoc to the island of Hon Thom in the An Thoi Islands.

Phu Quac is accessed by plane or regular ferries from the mainland towns of Rach Gia and Ha Tien. As Ha Tien lies very close to the southern border crossing with Cambodia, the island is a popular first (or last) stop-off in Vietnam for overland travelers.

I was thinking of doing 5 nights HCMC , 5 nights Hanoi and then a few nights on a cruise of one of the bays. However I’m now thinking of just doing HCMC, Phu Quoc and maybe flying to Brisbane via Singapore (do a few nights in Singapore).

We can then return on another trip and do Hanoi and the bays and maybe Hoi An? At a ‘better’ time of year?

We fly into HCMC and we need to chill a bit as we are en route to emigrating - don’t want to end up schlepping all over Vietnam . We also have an 11 year old and Phu Quoc looks quite suitable?

Any thoughts? Am I over thinking? Haha!

I loved the location too. Close enough to District 1 but far enough away that you can wander the surrounding Hems and not see another tourist. It was a great spot for street food at night too.

Most hotels in HCMC with pools have a very small roof top area with limited seating. Great views but if there are more than 6 people there at the same time, it can get claustrophobic.

The Equatorial has a large pool that you can swim laps in, about 20-25 loungers and even a swim up bar.
