On the north side of Madeira Island, you can find a mysterious fog creating an incredible atmosphere amongst the trees of Fanal Forest. The twisted branches of the grand centenary Ocotea Foetens trees and the fog come together in this fairytale scene. In this blog post, I will share with you the details about what to expect at Fanal, how to get there, the different walks, hikes, and viewpoints in the region, and some photography tips for Fanal.

Best of Madeira’s West: The tour departs from Funchal and passes through the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Following that, Cabo Girão Skywalk (the tallest seacliff in Europe) is next on the itinerary. Here, you can enjoy stepping out on the glass floor observation deck for jaw-dropping views below.

After that, the tour continues to wind up to Madeira’s highest plateau and explores the amazing Fanal Forest . A leisurely stop at Porto Moniz’s natural pool for lunch is next.

HOW TO GET TO FANAL FOREST

Located on the north-western end of Madeira Island, the Fanal Forest is quite easy to find as it has a dedicated parking area called ‘Faial Parking’ on Google Maps. Here you can park your car and walk a few hundred meters straight into the forest or to visit the nearby viewpoint, which is also just a few hundred meters away from the parking lot. From Funchal , it will take you one hour via car.

BEST TIME TO VISIT FANAL FOREST

The Fanal Forest is great to visit all year round but there are certain weather conditions that make this place quite atmospheric. Basically, you want the entire forest to be engulfed by fog to create this mystical, moody vibe that you can see in my photos. It is common for fog to hit this area, which is 1,150 meters above sea level. It can be quite hard to predict when it will be clear and when it will be foggy. Often if it is clear and sunny at sea level down by the beach, it can still be foggy conditions in the forest.

The best tip I can offer is that it is said to be more likely to get foggy conditions in the morning rather than in the evening. We chose a day when it had been foggy for a few days up in the mountains and then went for sunrise the next morning. It was even a little too foggy and windy for us but we were grateful the fog rolled in and created this stunning scene. As you can see below, I’ve included a photo of the Fanal Forest in foggy conditions and also of when I visited after the Levada dos Cedros hike when it was clear and sunny. Big difference.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT FANAL FOREST

This ancient laurel forest of Fanal is found in the northwest of Madeira island. It’s renowned for its alluring beauty eerie atmosphere. You will be met by a dense canopy of trees as you enter the forest, which will filter the light and produce a softer, more ethereal glow. It feels otherworldly because of the thick layer of moss that covers the forest floor and the fog that commonly rolls through the region.

Several hiking trails with varying degrees of difficulty can be found as you meander through the forest. There is a trail for everyone, experienced or novice hikers alike. Be on the lookout for the well-known “fairy tale trees,” which are old laurel trees with twisted and contorted branches that resemble something from a fairy tale.

The Fanal Forest takes on a completely different personality at night. A mystical and ethereal atmosphere is created when the forest is enveloped in mist and the moonlight and starlight pass through the trees. It’s the ideal time to go on a guided night hike through the forest, where you can discover the magic of the forest at dusk. Even some nocturnal creatures found in the forest, like owls or bats, may be visible to you.

In conclusion, the Fanal Forest is a must-see location for visitors to Madeira. HISTORY OF THE UNESCO FANAL FOREST

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Laurissilva Forest includes a section on Madeira Island called the Fanal Forest. A variety of plant and animal species can be found in this subtropical forest, which is about 15,000 hectares in size. Some of the plant species are unique to Madeira Island. Laurel trees, the forest’s dominant species, are what give the forest its distinctive appearance.

The Canary laurel, Madeira laurel, and Bay laurel are some of the laurel species that can be found in the Fanal Forest. These tall trees, whose height can reach 40 meters, have broad leaves that absorb moisture from the persistent mist that covers the forest. Because of the laurel trees, the forest has a special atmosphere with high humidity and relatively constant temperatures all year long. Ferns, mosses, and lichens, among other plant and animal species, can all thrive in this environment. Numerous bird species, including the Laurel Pigeon and the Madeira Firecrest, which are both endemic to the island of Madeira, can be found in the Fanal Forest.

FANAL FOREST HIKING OPTIONS

There are a few different options for hikes and walks in the Fanal Forest. Naturally, I did them all because I was on Madeira for three months. Therefore, I can share what to expect and which one of the routes you might want to choose.

VEREDA DO FANAL

Vereda do Fanal is the popular choice for hiking when it comes to Fanal Forest. It begins at the plateau of Paul da Serra and actually ends at the Posto Florestal do Fanal Forest after an 11-kilometer journey through the Laurissilva forest.

The awkward part about the Vereda do Fanal is that it’s a point-to-point trail, which basically means it is a one-way route. You either have to park at one end and hike it out and back meaning it would be 22 kilometers or have someone pick you up at the other end. It is possible to hitchhike back because it is on a popular main road.

LEVADA DOS CEDROS TO FANAL HIKE

The Levada dos Cedros hike follows a levada through one of the most beautiful forest sections on Madeira until you finally reach an incredible waterfall! This shady, forest hike winds through lush greenery for 6 kilometers before you will discover a multi-tiered waterfall for a refreshing dip.

FANAL FOREST WALK AND SCENIC VIEWPOINTS

If you don’t want a big long hike what you can do is simply park your car in ‘Faial Parking’ and then walk up the stairs to the viewpoint or wander around the forest nearby. Basically, as soon as you arrive to the parking lot, you are immersed in the magic of the forest. You can enjoy the twisted trees, mystic fog and magical scenery without going on a big trek. Even the cows are hanging out near the parking lot.

What I found is that there was no right or wrong with Fanal and I ended up having the best time just wandering around all of the different paths and viewpoints in the area. Over each new hill are some more crazy trees and stunning scenes so just set off from the parking lot and see what you find.

There are also lots of picnic tables and places to gather and relax with family and friends near the parking lot so it can be a great place to spend a few hours in a group.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN FANAL FOREST

Fanal Forest is an incredible location for photography. The twisted branches of the trees create a scene straight out of a horror movie. This is especially true when the fog is rolling through, giving that eerie atmosphere to the landscape. In terms of photography in Fanal it really depends on how much fog there is for what type of photos you might be able to create.

I wanted to capture some images with the entire trees and small people beneath them but the fog was so strong on the day I visited, that the quality of my images suffered a little bit. I began shooting with a 24-105mm lens. I didn’t even bother to take out my 400mm as the fog was too thick for a long-distance telephoto shot. In the end, I quickly switched to my 16-35mm, which meant I could get closer to my subject and avoid the quality loss due to the thick fog between myself and the subject.

Having a person in the frame at this location can help to give some scale to the trees but I also loved the moody shots of the twisted trees without any human element.

One of my favorite parts of Fanal was the curious cows who seemed to stare at me, wondering what I was up to. I had a stand-off with one cow for a couple of minutes while he let me snap a few shots of him. You can see in the photos his eyes are locked onto me with a steely determination.

Fanal Forest is located high in the mountains in the west of Madeira and is easiest to reach by renting a car. From Funchal, it takes about an hour’s drive to the Fanal parking lot , and from there, you can directly enter Fanal Forest. The road to Fanal is one of the most beautiful roads in Madeira, and along the way, be sure to make a stop at the viewpoint Miradouro Lombo do Mouro . If you don’t have a rental car, you will need to book a tour as public transportation doesn’t reach this area, and taking a taxi is not recommended due to the long distance and cost involved.

If you ask us, you’ll want to visit Fanal Forest when there’s a thick layer of mist. The thicker the mist, the better. Combined with the unique shapes of the laurel trees, it creates a truly extraordinary sight. When there’s no mist, Fanal Forest is still beautiful, but it feels somewhat less mystical. Of course, it’s difficult to know when there will be mist, but fortunately, you have a good chance for most of the year. The highest chance of mist is in the morning. If you’re in Funchal, it’s best to check if there are low or high clouds that day. If there are clouds at the mountaintops above Funchal, there’s also a high chance of mist in Fanal Forest.

From the parking lot, you can of course wander around randomly and get lost in the forest. That’s a good idea in itself, but it can also be helpful to check the satellite images of Fanal Forest on Google Maps here to see where the large groups of trees are located. Otherwise, you might miss a significant part of Fanal Forest because you won’t be able to gauge its size. Unfortunately, there is no public transport service in the area.

If you’re not driving, you have the option of taking bus no. 139 to the town of Ribeira da Janela (a single ticket costs around 5€) and then continuing by taxi. Ribeira da Janela is about 8km from the Fanal Forest, but walking it is challenging as the elevation gain is significant.

However, keep in mind that fog is a natural phenomenon and although frequent, it’s not guaranteed in Fanal.

What to pack

A rain jacket is essential here as Fanal’s weather is as unpredictable as it can get. Wearing waterproof hiking shoes or boots is also a good idea since parts of Fanal Forest can be quite muddy or wet.

If you’re into photography, consider bringing different lenses here. The fog produces different results whether you’re shooting with a wide lens or a telephoto lens, so get ready to have some fun.

Our best tips for the Fanal Forest in Madeira

When you visit the Fanal Forest in Madeira, make sure to check out also the Vereda do Fanal (PR 13) and Levada dos Cedros (PR 13), both of which are nearby and absolutely beautiful. You probably won’t be able to do both in the same day, but you should definitely check at least one.

If the fog is quite heavy, find a system to take note of your path if you need to backtrack your steps. Fanal forest isn’t huge, and you will easily find your way out if you follow one of the paths.

Don’t forget your camera – you’ll definitely want to capture the unique atmospheric vibe of the surroundings. Here’s a tip: get to know how fog affects photos . If you want fog in your pictures but it’s thin, use a longer lens, like a 70mm. If the fog is too thick, use a wider lens to lessen the fog in the final photo.

Don’t forget to pack snacks and water since there are no cafes or restaurants nearby.

The Vereda de Fanal is located in the northern part of the Portuguese island of Madeira, and is part of the Laurisilva forest of Paul da Serra. This UNESCO World Heritage Site , known for its mysterious and unusual landscape with trees up to 500 years old , never ceases to amaze visitors.

Laurel is a type of wild forest that covered much of southern Europe centuries ago but is becoming a rare landscape in the world and Madeira is one of the few places where it still exists, along with the Azores and the Canary Islands.

Entering the forest of Fanal is like being transported into a fairy tale. You gradually enter an extraordinary landscape surrounded by a mysterious mist that creates a special atmosphere among the twisted branches of the huge old trees.

In this blog post we will share with you all the details about our visit to the Fanal forest.

The best time to visit Fanal forest

The Fanal Forest, like the rest of Madeira Island, is an ideal place to visit all year round , but there are certain climatic conditions that make this forest so magical.

The best time to visit is when it is full of fog , as you can see in our photos. Fog in this area, which is 1150 metres above sea level, is common but some days it is completely clear and quite difficult to predict.

Our tip is to visit early in the morning to increase the chances of fog. We visited Fanal Forest on several occasions, the first time we went at around 11am and the landscape was completely clear and the second time we arrived at around 8am and it was completely covered in fog.

Throughout the article you will see photos of the 2 days so you can see the big difference in the scenario.

Walk in the Laurisilva Forest at Fanal

The laurel forest in Madeira with its ferns, moss, interesting trees and different shades of green… It never ceases to amaze us!

These are the different options for you to visit this forest:

One of the options as mentioned earlier in this article is to drive directly to the Fanal car park and from there walk a few metres to explore and get lost in the forest trees and mystical mist without a long walk.

We enjoyed the views by simply wandering aimlessly among the trees and cows, climbing the hills and taking pictures.

The second option to visit Fanal is to take one of the following hiking routes.

Hiking in the Fanal forest: Different routes and useful info

It is not really necessary to walk a lot to enjoy the forest, but there are several interesting hiking trails in this area of varying length and difficulty.

We spent several months in Madeira and we have been able to do different routes so we can help you choose which one is more suitable for you depending on what you are looking for.

Verada do Fanal (PR13)

This hiking route is the most popular in Fanal. It is a 10.8 kilometre (approx. 4 hours) one-way walk through the Laurisilva forest from the plateau of Paul da Serra to Fanal. The downside of being a point-to-point route is that you have to walk the same route back and forth, which is 22 kilometres in total , or hitchhike back.

Cedar Levada (PR14) to Fanal

This hike starts on the plateau of Paul da Serra and passes through the laurel forest and ends at a beautiful waterfall. This hike is 11 km round trip.

Creative photography in Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest is a perfect place if you like photography. Almost every tree is a masterpiece. Twisted branches, bent trees blown by the wind, cows grazing in the mist… a perfect location to take pictures.

As we mentioned at the beginning we have visited this forest several times and each time we had completely different scenarios.

Don’t be discouraged if the first time you go there is no fog at all because it is common, you just have to try again and you will surely get to see this peculiar landscape.

Using Google Maps, locate the dedicated parking area named ‘Faial Parking,’ which serves as the starting point for your adventure. The scenic drive takes you through picturesque landscapes, offering glimpses of the island’s breathtaking beauty. Once you arrive at ‘Faial Parking,’ find a safe spot to park your vehicle. From there, take a short walk to the entrance of Fanal Forest, following the signs or marked trails. As you step into the forest, be prepared to be transported into a world of natural wonder. Ancient trees, vibrant flora, and a tranquil ambiance await you, inviting you to explore and immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of Fanal Forest.

If you don’t have your own car and you’re looking at visiting Fanal Forest I’d highly recommend booking a tour that takes you through the western coast of Madeira. This 4×4 tour departs from Funchal and will take you along some of the best things Madeira has to offer:

Finding the fog

One of the most sought-after experiences in Fanal Forest is wandering through its ethereal landscape veiled in mystical fog. The interplay of mist and ancient trees creates an atmosphere straight out of a fairytale, where every step unravels a sense of wonder and enchantment.

Madeira is absolutely full of microclimates, which make predicting the fog tricky. It could be glorious sunshine on the cost and rainy in the mountains (or vice versa!). Visiting in the morning definitely increases your likelihood of experiencing this captivating phenomenon, we went at around 9am and it was absolutely perfect.

I imagine when looking for a blog on fanal forest you were hoping for an absolute comprehensive guide on finding the fog, I remember I was when doing my research. I’m sorry to say that, unfortunately, it’s just not possible! None of the weather apps or webcams of Madeira will give you accurate enough info to predict the fog in Fanal forest. All you can do is go in the morning and try your luck, we got very lucky first try!

History of the forest

Fanal Forest, also known as Laurissilva Forest, holds a rich history and ecological significance that dates back millions of years. It is a living relic of the Tertiary Period, a time when these lush forests covered large areas of Southern Europe.

The Laurissilva Forest is a type of subtropical rainforest and is unique to Macaronesia, a group of volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, including Madeira. The forest primarily comprises evergreen laurel trees, but it is also home to a wide variety of other flora and fauna, creating an intricate and diverse ecosystem.

The origins of Fanal Forest can be traced back to around 20 million years ago, during the Miocene Epoch. During this period, the climate in the region was much wetter and warmer, facilitating the growth and spread of the laurel forest. Over time, as the Earth’s climate cooled and dried, the forest gradually retreated to smaller areas, leaving its primary modern-day stronghold on Madeira.

The conservation efforts for Fanal Forest gained momentum during the 20th century. In 1982, UNESCO designated a significant part of the Laurissilva Forest as a World Natural Heritage Site, recognising its importance as a living relic of ancient biodiversity.

What else is there to see around the area?

When sorting out our itinerary for Madeira we tried to pair up things that were geographically close by to save on driving. For your Fanal Forest day I’d recommend the following:

9am: Fanal forest, you’ll likely be finished in an hour or two depending on how many pictures you want to take 11am: Make your way to Seixal and relax on the black sand beach 12pm: Lunch in Seixal, we ate at Lounge Bar near the beach and the portions were massive 2pm: Walk across the town to the natural pools which are free to enter and spend the rest of the day lounging there

Practical Tips for Visiting Fanal Forest

• Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain as there are tree roots everywhere.
• Bring layers of clothing as the fog will make it very very cold and wet.
• Respect the forest and its inhabitants by following designated trails and refraining from littering.
• There will likely be cows (and calfs if you’re visiting during spring) wandering around the forest, please keep an eye out and stay respectful of them as you explore

The gnarled branches of the century-old Ocotea Foetens trees intermingle with the fog, creating a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Getting to Fanal Forest

Situated on the north-western tip of Madeira Island, Fanal Forest is conveniently accessible and parking can be found at Parque de Merendas do Fanal . Here, you can park your vehicle and embark on a short walk of a few hundred meters into the forest or visit the nearby viewpoint, which is also just a short distance from the parking area. The journey from Funchal to Fanal Forest typically takes about one hour by car.

The Best Time to Explore Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest is a year-round attraction, but certain weather conditions enhance its mystical allure. Ideally, you’d want the entire forest blanketed in fog to create the ethereal, moody vibe often seen in my photographs. Given its elevation of 1,150 meters above sea level, fog is not uncommon in this region. However, predicting when it will be foggy or clear can be challenging. Frequently, while it’s sunny and clear by the beach at sea level, the forest can remain shrouded in mist.

One valuable tip is that foggy conditions are more likely in the morning rather than in the evening. We selected a day when the mountains had been foggy for a few days and then headed to Fanal Forest for sunrise the next morning. It turned out to be slightly too foggy and windy, but we appreciated how the fog enveloped the area, creating a breath-taking scene.

What to Anticipate at Fanal Forest

This ancient laurel forest, located in the northwest of Madeira Island, is renowned for its enchanting and eerie beauty. Upon entering the forest, you’ll encounter a dense canopy of trees that diffuses the light, casting a softer, otherworldly glow. The forest floor is adorned with a thick layer of moss, further enhancing the mystical atmosphere, especially when combined with the fog that often drifts through the area.

While navigating through the forest, you’ll come across several hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty, catering to both experienced and novice hikers. Keep an eye out for the famous “fairy tale trees,” ancient laurel trees with twisted and contorted branches that evoke the imagery of a fairy tale.

Fanal Forest undergoes a remarkable transformation at night. Enveloped in mist, bathed in moonlight and starlight filtering through the trees, it takes on a mystical and ethereal persona. Hiking in the Fanal Forest

The Vereda do Fanal is the most renowned hiking trail in Madeira’s Fanal region. This one-way path leads you from the Paul da Serra plateau to the enchanting Fanal Forest, a journey that typically takes approximately 4 hours one way.

It’s essential to note that this trail follows a point-to-point or in-and-out route, which means you’ll need to arrange transportation in advance, hitchhike, or be prepared for a 13-mile (22 km) round-trip excursion.

Your return point will be the Fanal Forestry Station (Posto Florestal Fanal), where you’ll find a more extensive parking area and your best chance of securing a ride back to your starting point.

Levada dos Cedros (PR 14)

The Levada dos Cedros trail meanders through nearly 4 miles (6 km) of Fanal Forest’s most captivating landscapes. As you traverse this path, you’ll be surrounded by lush green forests and the majestic Ocotea Foetens trees. The trail leads to a breathtaking multi-level waterfall where you can refresh yourself before retracing your steps for the return journey.

The trees in Fanal Forest seem out of this world. They all have different shapes and the branches are covered with layers of moss. Because of the twisted branches it sometimes seems as if the trees are dancing.

In the forest you will not only encounter special flora. Be careful, because of the dense fog curious cows and birds can suddenly emerge from the fog.

Best time to visit Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest is located high in the mountains, so there is a good chance that it is often covered with a layer of fog. We definitely recommend visiting the forest on a cloudy and rainy day. Even on a rainy day the fog is unpredictable. There are moments where you can see 5 meters further and in a minute all the fog is gone. That makes this area even more adventurous. When fog rolls over this landscape, it creates fairytale scenes. The views looks like scenes that come straight out of a movie. Fanal Forest is super photogenic with fog and moody vibes and you won’t stop making content here.

It is difficult to predict when it will be foggy here, but early in the morning you have the greatest chance of fog. The south coast of the island is often sunny, if it is already rainy or cloudy here, there is a good chance that it will be foggy in Fanal Forest.

Hiking in Fanal Forest

In the area of ​​Fanal Forest you will find several hikes, including the walking route PR13 Vereda do Fanal. This route of about 20 kilometers takes you through the forest in about 4 hours.

Get lost in Fanal Forest

Don’t want to take such a long walk? Then there are several points where you can park the car and discover a part of the forest. We liked it the most to just walk around from the parking lot and get lost in the forest. We certainly spent the whole morning in Fanal Forest. You will not get bored here.

How to get to Fanal Forest

The easiest way to visit Fanal Forest is by car. It is an hour’s drive from Funchal . Unfortunately you cannot get there by public transport. So if you don’t have a rental car , the only option to see Fanal Forest is by booking a tour.

In this region of the island, rain and humid weather are common, so the plateau actually acts as a reservoir for the entire island. This is where water is taken for irrigating fields in arid regions. This high humidity, coupled with relatively constant temperatures throughout the year, fosters the growth of ferns, mosses, lichens, and other plant species. The forest also provides a habitat for a wide variety of bird species, including the endemic Laurel Pigeon and Madeira Firecrest.

Located on the northwestern end of Madeira Island, Fanal Forest is easily accessible by car. Simply follow the road to Fanal Parking, a dedicated parking area for visitors. From Funchal, the capital city of Madeira, it takes approximately 50 minutes to reach Fanal Forest by car.

This forest changes incredibly depending on the weather. If it’s raining or foggy, you’ll find yourself in a mystical world. For some reason, it reminded me of scenes from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” Mornings tend to be more likely to have foggy conditions, making it an ideal time to capture the magical ambiance of the forest.

Fanal Forest offers several hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the area’s natural beauty. Very popular trail is Vereda do Fanal (PR13), which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This trail starts at the plateau of Paul da Serra and stretches for approximately 11 kilometers through the Laurissilva forest. It offers a point-to-point route, so you have the option to hike out and back, covering a total distance of 22 kilometers, or arrange for transportation at the end of the trail. Alternatively, hitchhiking is a common practice in the area, as Vereda do Fanal is located along a popular main road.

And the Levada dos Cedros (PR14), the 6-kilometer hike, a historic path that winds through the forest along the steep flank of the Ribeira da Janela valley, was constructed in the 17th century and is therefore one of the island’s oldest.

The Fanal Forest of Madiera is the most surreal and magical place I’ve ever visited! I highly recommend spending a few hours in this rare landscape in Madeira natural park on the north side of Madeira island. You’re going to want to experience the magical atmosphere of the fanal laurel forest for yourself!

I’ll never forget my first time stepping foot inside this magical forest. I was instantly enchanted by the lush greenery, moss-covered forest floor, and curious cows grazing nearby. The air was thick with a mystical fog transforming the sunlight into a glowing, ethereal wonderland. Tall trees with twisted limbs that seem like they were plucked right out of a fairy tale.

Along with the Santana houses , visiting this surreal forest was one of the highlights of my Madeira solo trip during my Portugal solo travel adventure.

Fanal Forest, Madeira

Madeira’s ethereal Fanal Forest, nestled high among the mountainous island terrain, is an ancient laurel forest and distinguished UNESCO World Heritage site with sustained conservation efforts. Recognized for its status as one of the few remaining laurel forests in the world, this mysterious location is a major Portugal bucket list location.

Known as a cloud forest, a forest found on mountainous slopes where moisture from the sea collides with air masses being pushed up from the ocean, Fanal Forest occupies over 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) of land.

The ancient forest is home to many endemic plant and animal species, meaning they only exist on Madeira. You’ll find different laurel species like the Madeira, Canary and Bay laurels as well as reptiles, amphibians, and birds like the Madeiran long-toed pigeon and Madeira firecrest.

How did this enchanting forest come to be? Thought to be between 15-40 million years old , Fanal Madeira traces its roots back to a time when laurel forests were prevalent in certain regions of Europe and North Africa.

After the ice age and climatic change, these subtropical forest lands began to disappear. Today, only a few places are home to these stunning laurel forests, including Madeira, the Azores, the Canary Islands, and the Cape Verde Archipelago.

Is Fanal Forest Worth Visiting?

Madeira’s Fanal Forest is absolutely worth visiting. As Madeira’s most beautiful forest and one of the world’s few remaining laurel forests, this is truly a unique ecological location with almost 150 endemic species of plants that don’t grow anywhere else in the world.

Ancient Trees

The grand centenary trees in Madeira’s laurel forest are part of what makes this unusual landscape so special.

At its heart stand the venerable old laurel trees, named Ocotea Foetens. These ancient trees have been standing witness to the passage of time for centuries, their gnarled trunks and lush canopies exuding an aura of wisdom and resilience.

These remarkable specimens are remnants of a primary forest that once blanketed Madeira’s landscape. The laurel trees’ age is a testament to their ability to thrive in this unique microclimate, where mist-laden air from the Atlantic Ocean nurtures their growth.

What makes Fanal Forest truly special is its role as a living relic, preserving the biodiversity and ecosystems of a bygone era. It’s a place where ancient trees continue to provide shelter for diverse flora and fauna, and where the whispers of the past beckon nature enthusiasts to explore this timeless wonderland.

At over 3,700 feet (1,150 meters) above sea level, the magical Fanal Forest is typically enshrouded in an otherworldly white fog that lends a mysterious aura to the evergreen landscape.

The weather here can be quite unpredictable and the fog’s appearance can change within minutes, shifting your visibility from a mere 10 feet ahead of you to clear skies almost instantaneously.

Keep in mind that the weather in the Madeira forest can be totally different from that at ground level.

What to Do in Fanal Forest, Madeira

The best thing to do in the Fanal Forest is simply to discover the area’s enchanting beauty. Follow the pathway through the dense forest and marvel at the mystical fog surrounding you.

There are also hiking trails with viewpoints, a waterfall, and plenty of amazing photo locations. This area connects to tons of other hiking routes so make sure to pay attention to the signs.

Hiking in the Fanal Forest is an enchanting way to explore the fairytale landscape. There are two different hiking trails that cross through the forest, as well as an easy forest walk. While the hiking paths include a number of incredible viewpoints, there is still one you can enjoy without taking these trails.

Personally, I don’t often seek out hikes over 2 hours long so the forest walk was perfect for me. There were so many incredible sights from the misty Fanal Pond to the gnarled centennial trees. I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything.

Vereda do Fanal (PR 13)

• Length: Approx. 6.5 mi (11 km) or 13-mi (22 km)
• Duration: 4-8 hours
• Elevation: Approx. 3900 ft (1200m) gain
• Difficulty: Moderate-Difficult
• Trailhead: PR 13 Vereda do Fanal sign, across from parking lot

The Vereda do Fanal is the most popular fanal Madeira hike. This one-way trail descends from the Paul da Serra plateau down to Fanal Forest, taking around 4 hours one way.

Keep in mind that this is a point-to-point, or an in-and-out, route so you’ll need to arrange transportation, hitchhike, or make the 13-mile (22 km) round-trip journey.

You’ll turn around once you reach the Fanal Forestry Station ( Posto Florestal Fanal ) where there will be a larger parking lot and your best bet for a ride back to your car.

Viewpoints: Vereda do Fanal has tons of great viewpoints, but you won’t see much unless the sun’s out.

Parking: This trail has its own small, gravel parking lot. Enter “PR 13 Vereda do Fanal” into your GPS.

Levada dos Cedros (PR 14)

• Length: Approx. 6.5 mi (11 km) roundtrip
• Duration: 3-4 hours
• Elevation: Approx. 1300 ft (400 m) gain
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Trailhead: PR 14 Levada dos Cedros sign, near parking lot

The Cedros Levada trail guides you through almost 4 miles (6 km) of the Fanal Forest’s most picturesque landscapes. Weave through lush green forests surrounded by the majestic Ocotea Foetens trees until you ultimately reach a stunning multi-level waterfall where you can cool off before making the journey back.

Parking: This trail has its own small parking lot. Enter “PR 14 Levada dos Cedros” int your GPS.

Just outside of the forest, you’ll find the enchanting Fanal Pond (Lagoa do Fanal). This small, round pool rests in the midst of the twisting laurel trees. Typically surrounded by thick mist, the pond makes an excellent spot for photography.

If you park in the main lot near the Forestry Station, you’ll be near the pond, to your right.

Photography

With a unique landscape unlike any other, the Fanal Forest is an amazing place for photography. Not only is this one of the best photo spots in Madeira, but it’s also on the list of most Instagrammable places in Portugal!

For the best photos, you’ll want just the right amount of fog so you can shoot at long distance ranges to capture the enormity of the towering trees.

Sunrise is the best time for photography, flooding the forest with bright light that’s absorbed by the white fog, setting the trees and plants aglow.

FUN FACT: The Fanal Forest is so otherworldly, rumor has it that Star Wars recently used this area as a filming location for an upcoming project.

When to Visit Fanal Forest, Madeira

A cloudy, rainy day is the best time to appreciate the Laurissilva forest’s ethereal beauty.

While time of year doesn’t play a major factor, daily weather can be challenging to anticipate due to the island’s many microclimates.

My best advice for a fog-filled day? Arrive as close to sunrise as possible, because the forest tends to be foggier in the morning. When I visited, 8 am-10 am was the foggiest time of day.

However, if you plan to hike, especially the Vereda do Fanal trail, too much fog means you’ll miss out on some of the epic viewpoints. If you have the time, you could plan to visit twice. Once for a full-fog forest walk and a sunnier day for the hiking trail.

PRO TIP: To try and predict the weather, keep an eye on the island’s southern coast. Oftentimes, rain or cloudiness here is a good indication that the forest will also be shrouded in mist.

How to Get to Fanal Forest, Madeira

You’ll find the mystical Fanal Forest at the mountain plateau of Paul da Serra in northwest Madeira. It’s about 6 miles (10 km) east of the town Ribeira da Janela.

Public transportation doesn’t reach this part of the island. The only way to get to the Laurissilva forest is to drive or book an affordable day tour. Plus, depending on your comfort level and sense of direction, exploring Madeira’s laurel forest with a tour guide may keep you from getting lost or having to worry about hitchhiking back from your hike.

If you plan to rent a car and want to visit on your own, take a look at the directions and parking information below.

How to Get to Fanal Forest from Funchal

Getting from Funchal to Fanal Forest is pretty easy. The two areas are about 30 miles (50 km) apart and should only require an hour-long drive.

Parking for the forest should be a total breeze. To locate the parking lot, simply put ‘Fanal Parking’ or ‘Posto Florestal Fanal’ into your GPS and you’ll be on your way.

The parking lot is located near the Fanal Forestry Station, and the road that takes you there is in good condition.

Once you arrive, you’ll have a quick walk to the forest. Head to the left for Vereda do Fanal or go right towards Levada dos Cedros and Fanal Pond. Just be sure to watch out for mud and grazing cows!

While there’s no campground in Fanal Forest, wild camping can be done in and around the area.

If you plan to go wild camping in Madeira, you’ll have to apply for permission from the Regional Forest Directorate beforehand. Once you have received an official document granting your permission, be sure to keep it with you at all times. You may need to present it to the Forest Guards who protect the areas.

Madeira’s Fanal Forest Tours

Enjoying a solo trip to Madeira? A fanal tour is a great way option for anyone traveling on their own or who doesn’t want to bother with the hassle of a rental car.

Luckily, there are tons of day tours that, when combined, will take you to just about every part of the island.

My recommendation is to book a full-day tour that includes a couple different stops. Your group might be picking up travelers in different areas of the island, so unless you book a private tour, driving time could be a little longer.

You might as well do as much as you can in one go, and save a day or two to hire a taxi or private transport to an area you want to spend more time in.

Magical Fanal Forest on Madeira – must visit place for creative photography

After a series of posts from Madeira ( you can read them all HERE ), the last one is the icing on the cake – it is about the most unique, mysterious, and unusual place on the island – the magical Fanal forest.

There are the places to travel to and discover, they stay in your head for a long time and there are the places the memories of which you want to share. Despite visiting over 85 countries I have never seen anything like this before. Entering Fanal Forest in Madeira is like entering a page from a fairy tale book. With every minute you become part of an extraordinary world shrouded in dense fog, unknown sounds, and mysterious shapes. The first thing that came to my mind was: I came across the Chronicles of Narnia , but it’s really happening!

Make yourself a cup of coffee, because I’m about to take you to another dimension…

How to get to Fanal Forest

The Fanal Forest is located on the Paul da Serra plateau in the north-west of Madeira, about 10 km east of the town of Ribeira da Janela . If you are going from Funchal, the trip is 50 km long and takes around an hour and a half. The only way to get here is by car, and you can park in the small parking lot marked as “ Faial Parking ” on Google Maps. Then you can walk a few hundred meters straight into the forest or visit the nearby viewpoint, which is also a few hundred meters from the parking lot.

When is the best time to visit the Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest, like the whole of Madeira, is a great place to visit all year round due to its stable spring weather. However, when it comes to the forest itself, there are certain weather conditions that make this place so magical. To experience the effect you see in our photos, the forest must be sinking in fog, therefore you must be lucky. We visited the forest several times at different times of the day and each time there was fog. At this altitude, 1150 m above sea level, it is not a rare phenomenon, so it is very likely that you will be able to experience what we experienced. To increase the probability even more, it is best to visit the forest in the morning or in the evening (then as it is getting dark the effect is completely different, but still amazing).

Goal: let yourself dive into the omnipresent fog in Fanal Forest

When the first explorers came to Madeira, the island was covered in the Laurisilva forest. This is one of nature’s most beautiful treasures. It is at least 20 million years old and it means that it outsurvived the Ice Age! It is gorgeous and exotic, with a green mantle of moss and lichen that surrounds tree trunks and rocks.

It can be seen in limited areas of Macaronesia (Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde). In 1999 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage List . The island of Madeira has the largest piece of the forest, as it covers an area of about 20% of the territory, especially on the northern coast in the national parks: Florestal das Queimadas, Fanal, Rabaçal, Chão dos Louros and Chão da Ribeira.

You really don’t have to walk miles to visit the forest. It will absorb you a few meters from the parking lot and will allow you to enjoy twisted trees, mystical fog, and magical scenery. For me, that was the essence of the experience: wandering around the trees, getting lost in a thick fog with the feeling that reality drifted away and I am the character of a fairy tale.

Creative photography in Fanal Forest

Fanal Forest is an amazing place when it comes to taking photos. As I mentioned at the beginning, we visited this place several times and each time we took advantage of the opportunity to take photos against different sceneries.

One time we were able to take romantic and fairy-tale-like photos (please appreciate my sacrifice to pose in a white dress, even though it was cold and wet :)), and the next time, when we arrived late in the evening, it was already dark and twisted tree branches created scenery straight from a horror movie (for me these were the Stranger Things  vibes).

As we all know, photos are best when one person can pose thanks to which we can give the trees some scale and effect in the frame.  Oh, and don’t be surprised if you are surrounded by dozens of cows grazing in the forest.

Possible hike options in Fanal Forest

If you want to spend more time in this area, there are several options for hikes:

Vereda do Fanal (PR13)

The hike begins on the Paul da Serra plateau and ends in Fanal, near the forest guard office. There is a volcano crater at the top. You will come across spectacular views of the island and the ocean. The trail is located in the area of the Laurissilva forest, which has been classified as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage and is part of the Natura 2000 network. One of the attractions of this trail is the remains of ropes from a device used to transport wood and shrubs.

Levada dos Cedros (PR14)

The Levada begins on the Paul da Serra plateau – the only plateau in Madeira. Levada dos Cedros is a water canal dating back to the 17th-century. The route leads through the Laurissilva forest and the Fanal crater. The most interesting natural specimens are the laurel forests, in which several specimens of laurel are natural monuments from the times before the island was even discovered. The water in the Levada comes from the springs of Lombo do Cedro, located at an altitude of 1000 m above sea level, on the slope of the right bank of the Ribeira da Janela stream.

Fanal Forest on Madeira - Everything You Need to Know

Fanal Forest is one of those places you could easily showcase on a postcard from Madeira. It is not just unique in appearance but also holds the distinction of being one of the few remaining laurel forests worldwide. This enchanting location is a must-visit during your trip to Madeira.

What to do in Fanal Forest

Fanal is situated in an isolated location with few attractions beyond the breathtaking nature. The area could be unofficially divided to 3 parts: The main area with the most impressive trees which are quite spread from each other in a way that on a clear day you won't feel that you're actually in a forest. The hilltop area, denser with picturesque trees offering a panoramic view of mountains and the ocean; and the third area, Fanal Pond, which occasionally dries out in the summer. While the pond may be the least captivating, being in Fanal makes it worth a visit.

Fanal Forest is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll amid beautiful scenery. Locals often picnic there, cooking the traditional barbecue – Espetada. Photography enthusiasts will find ample opportunities to unleash their creativity in the enjoyable setting. Additionally, there are hiking trails passing through the area, making Fanal an excellent combination with your hike. For those seeking a more immersive experience, camping permits are available for spending a night in Fanal in a tent.

How to get to Fanal Forest

As of now, public transportation to Fanal Forest is unavailable. The two options to get there are joining a tour or driving there on your own, which I highly recommend.

Finding Fanal is straightforward. Simply search for FANAL FOREST PARKING   on Google, and the map will guide you. There are two spacious parking lots, ensuring you find a spot for your car.

What to Expect of Fanal Forest

Fanal is a very unique place, so you can surely expect to see something special when heading there. It's not uncommon to see Fanal Forest covered in a dense fog. This fog is actually clouds which are passing over the mountain range. This atmospheric weather can change rapidly, transitioning from a beautiful sunset to complete fog in minutes. Patience is key if you want to witness Fanal in its moody version.

In the main area you'll see many cows trimming the grass. The animals aren't dangerous and they're are very comfortable with having people around. Unfortunately as the grass gets in, later it also gets out. So you have to be careful to not step in cow dung.

Ticks are another characteristic of Fanal. You can be almost sure that after sitting on the grass you'll get some on your clothes. It happens to me all the time. So the best way to avoid catching a tick would be having a proper footwear which will cover your foot fully. Having good shoes will also make you feel more comfortable, as the ground in Fanal very often gets wet and muddy. As this place is situated very high, the temperatures here could be way lower than at the sea level, so having a jacket just in case would be a good idea.

Fanal Forest is one of the top attractions of Madeira so you can expect seeing lots of people here. Fortunately, Fanal is also quite large, so the people will always spread out across the area. I found to see less visitors in the evening, at sunset than during the day.

Fanal Forest isn't a dangerous place, but be aware that with a dense fog it's very easy to get lost, what happened to me few times already even though I visited Fanal dozens of times.

There are few places you could nicely combine with your visit to Fanal forest. Hiking enthusiasts should explore Vereda do Fanal or Levada dos Cedros, one of Madeira's top levadas.

Fanal Madeira: Visit the magical Laurisilva forest

Arriving at Fanal in Madeira is like entering a page in a fairytale book.

We have driven up a deserted mountain road and has arrived at a small parking lot by the roadside. In front of us lies Madeira’s ancient Laurisilva forest. H illy meadows and crooked tress everywhere. Then the fog starts rolling in from the hillside shrouding the landscape in mysterious fog.

It’s not just a stroke of luck. The forest here is almost always shrouded in fog. And that is exactly what we have dreamt of experiencing.

And now we are here. Completely amazed we walk among the old crooked trees completely enchanted by this fairytale landscape.

How to get to Fanal

The Fanal forest is located at the mountain plateau Paul da Serra in the north-west part of Madeira around 10 km east of the town Ribeira Da Janela. If you are driving from Funchal the trip is 50 km long and takes around one and half hour. The only way to get here is by car and you can park at the small parking lot right here.

From here you only have a short walk to all of those lovely tress. It can be muddy though and cows also graze here so watch out for the cow dung.

Lost in the fog

Out of pure enthusiasm, I loose track of my travel companions and for a while wander around the forest not really knowing where I am. But it is a good kind of lost. I can only see a few meters ahead of me and the silence is just as dense as the fog . It is like moving through a vacuum of time into an entirely different world.

Suddenly I spot a particularly characteristic tree. I have seen it before and realize I have walked around in a circle. I really have been captured by a fairytale!

Madeira’s original laurisilva forest

When the first explorers came to Madeira, the island was covered by Laurisilva forest. Now only 16% of the forest is left. Laurisilva is a type of native forest that once covered much of southern Europe. Now there are only a few areas left and the largest is here in Madeira. T he forest is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Walks in Fanal

You don’t really need to hike far to experience the forest but it sure is a wonderful area to do so. Here are some options:

Vereda do Fanal (PR13)

The trail starts at the regional road 209 here at Assobiadores   and ends at Posto Florestal Do Fanal. It’s 10,8 km long, the difficulty is easy to moderate. The elevation is from 1420 to 1130 meters walking downhill. Duration is 4 hours.

Levada dos Cedros (PR14)

This trail starts at the same regional road 209 here at Fanal and ends here at Curral Falso. This hike is 7,2 m long, the difficulty is easy to moderate, with an elevation from 1130 to 840 meters walking downhill. Duration is 3 hours.

Fanal Forest

The  Fanal area is one of  Madeira's large laurel forests , located in the northwest of the island. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and as a Natural Heritage of Humanity, this dense forest is also  protected by the Madeira Natural Park  since 1982. Fanal is a particularly humid laurel forest, due to the subtropical climate of the island and the forest is very often in mist and fog.

Access to the Fanal forest

Parking is available at the Fanal forest shelter, along the ER209 road from the Paul da Serra plateau . A picnic area is available here. You can then take a stroll through part of the Fanal forest (less than a 1 km walk). The experience that awaits you will depend on the weather: mystical atmosphere if it's foggy, or a moment of relaxation and in the sun.

An enchanting forest

You doubt the beauty of the place? I refer you to  this article presenting the work of the artist Michael Schlegel , who photographed the trees in the middle of a fog. Madeira's laurel forest is magical under the fog, but also at night or in full sun. In short,  it's a must-see . By the south or by the north? We'll see, but going to Madeira without seeing the laurissilva is a nonsense! If you like photography and hiking, do the Vereda do Fanal, from the Paul Da Serra plateau!

A picnic area

The Fanal forest is the perfect place to stop when you decide to explore the north-west of the island. Stop by the forest shelter in one of the small car parks, and take the opportunity to picnic and rest for a while. The atmosphere is very special: you're in the middle of a nature park with lots of cows in the meadow. Follow the PR13 vereda do Fanal hiking trail for a while to discover Fanal's most beautiful viewpoints. The " Miradouro Sobre a Ribeira Funda " viewpoint awaits you just a few steps from the shelter. Continue your walk past the small stretch of water on your right. You can then climb the Picos Pedreira and its 1242 m to enjoy the view of the surrounding area.

Hiking and discover the Fanal forest

You can discover this dense and strange forest on foot, hiking along the levadas and veredas. There are several access points: firstly, to the south from the vast Paul Da Serra plateau, at an altitude of 1,400m. The view of the landscape from the plateau is breathtaking. This is where the vereda do fanal (PR13) begins: the 10 km trail takes you through panoramic landscapes in the heart of the laurissilva forest and this dense vegetation, at the very heart of nature on Madeira Island.

The route can then be accessed from the north of the island and the village of Ribeira da Janela. Take the PR15 hiking path: Vereda de Ribeira da Janela , to enter the verdant mountains. The walk continues through the heart of the forest on the levada dos Cedros (PR14) . There are other access points from the north of the island, such as the chão da ribeira valley, from the village of Seixal. The possibilities are truly numerous: the mountain is imposing and there are, of course, other possibilities via the hiking trails to discover the Fanal forest.

Hiking the famous vereda do fanal, madeira (pr13).

On a moody day, the vereda Fanal in Madeira may be the most unique and beautiful forest on the entire island! This fairy-esque forest is the reason we wanted to do the Vereda do Fanal hike so bad. 

We do want to let you know you can park right about 100 meters away from the Fanal Forest and experience it without having to walk there. But if you’ve been following us for a while, you know we love hiking and being out in nature so that’s why we decided to take the extra 10 km of hiking there 😉

The hike wasn’t easy. It was totally worth it though and we had the perfect misty, foggy, and magical weather when we got to the Fanal Forest. We couldn’t have asked for a better hike even though it was quite long and challenging! 

Along this hike, you’ll feel like you’re half in a fairy world and half in the new Lord of The Rings show. The scenery and nature is epic around the Vereda do Fanal in Madeira!

What to expect when hiking Vereda Fanal

What to expect when hiking the Vereda do Fanal Madeira is quite the question. You really have to expect the unexpected. This hike is quite different from the Levada trails like Levada do Rei , Levada 25 Fontes and also very different from the coastal hikes like Ponta de São Lourenco and Vereda do Larano .

If you’re staying in Funchal or Ponta do Sol it may be warm and sunny and you can likely expect quite the opposite once you get near the Fanal Forest. With all the microclimates around the island, the weather around Madeira is always changing. You can see the current weather for Fanal Forest here .

More often than not it’s going to be quite foggy and moody up there. Even though it may be sunny 5 km from the trailhead, you might still see a huge cloud hovering over the Fanal area!

The fog and cloudiness do take away from some of the views along the PR 13 Vereda do Fanal but it also makes for a unique hiking experience. By the time you get to the Fanal Forest you’ll understand why. 

The majority of the hike takes place through the forest with completely different flora to the rest of the island. You feel like you’re in some elvish land walking through this enchanted forest. You can really tell your imagination will come to life during this hike.

We also found a few times that the scenery changed completely . Literally just after taking a few steps – especially towards the end of the hike. This was probably one of the coolest things about it!

Practical information about hiking Vereda do Fanal trail

Starting at PR13 Vereda do Fanal parking lot

It’s best to follow this map for PR 13 . The Google pin for Vereda do Fanal works well too to see the exact parking spot. It’s a small little gravel parking lot that fits about 5-10 cars and that’s where the hike starts from.

You’ll see the trail across the street with a sign that says “PR 13 Vereda do Fanal”. That’s exactly where you’ll start!

This isn’t going to be your standard flat hike in Madeira… There’s actually quite a bit of elevation gain on this one (1186 meters), and right off the bat, you’ll start descending into the trees.

You’ll notice throughout the hike how different the trees and flora are. It is pretty typical to experience that in Madeira and one thing we appreciate hiking in on this island.

In this beginning section, you’ll cross the main driving road a few times. It may seem confusing but don’t worry. There will be plenty of signs indicating that you’re on the right trail. Again, you can follow this map if you like to have it on your phone as well.

Follow Vereda do Fanal through the forest

If you look at the Vereda do Fanal trail map you’ll see the section between points 2 and 3! On this section, there are a bunch of beautiful viewpoints you can check out if the weather is sunny. We got a bit unlucky though since it was quite moody and cloudy. We didn’t get to see many of the views at all the viewpoints along the way.

If you’re lucky enough to have good weather in this section of the hike you’ll see the green rolling mountains all around. In between all the green mountains is where you’ll find Levada das 25 Fontes , one of Madeira’s most iconic and popular hikes.  

This section also has a lot of incline and decline so prepare your knees for it. We definitely recommend wearing some hiking shoes with ankle support . With over 20 km of walking through these trails your feet will thank you for it.  Hiking poles are also a good idea to bring.

Back to the trail, this section really starts to give off some serious Lord of the Rings vibes. It feels like some sort of enchanted forest you’re walking through and during the perfect conditions (which is foggy), you can barely see more than a few meters ahead of you.

An important thing to make sure of here is that you stay on the right trail. There were a few times when we felt like we got lost and had to double-check our phone maps to make sure we were going the right way. 

At the end of point 3 on the map , you’ll cross back across the road to finish the last stretch of the hike.

The last stretch towards the Fanal Forest

This last stretch of the hike has a bit of incline as well. If you’re there on a sunny and clear day, you’ll be able to see quite far as you’ll be above most of the treeline. Not likely though, as this area is usually quite misty and foggy (which is totally worth the hype, by the way). The fog will make your experience at the Fanal Madeira Forest epic and almost magical.

We found this last section to be quite fun and we hope you enjoy it as well! And just to prepare you, you may run into a cow or two around one of the corners along the way.

We were just walking, talking, enjoying the views, and bam out of nowhere this cow just suddenly showed up. It definitely gave us a slight jump because it was so unexpected!

As you get closer and closer to Fanal Forest you’ll really start to see the fairy forest come to life. One moment you’ll be walking on a normal trail and the next moment you’ll turn a corner and the scenery will completely change!

Everything starts to get mossier, greener, lusher, and more fairy-esque! This area is really cool to take pictures of. You won’t be too far from the actual Fanal Forest at this point either! Get ready because it’s going to be magical! 

Explore the Fanal Madeira Forest 

You made it! The moment you’ve been waiting for. Honestly, the Fanal Forest is definitely the highlight of the PR 13 but the build-up to it makes it that much more magical in our opinion. 

Of course, you can just drive up to the parking lot and see the trees in a few minutes but it’s so much more rewarding and fun when you have to work for something! So after the 10 ish km of hiking, you’ll really enjoy this beautiful forest. 

The best part is that this forest is huge and not dense at all like what you’d imagine a typical forest to look like. The trees that grow here are super spread apart and you can walk among them and explore the forest. And because of the fog, you will barely notice if other people are around you. 

Take some epic pictures with the trees and play with your camera to get some epic angles and shots. Just make sure to bring a rain jacket because this area, in particular, gets really wet! 

Enjoy this unique forest! If you’re curious as to how this forest lives in Madeira it’s because the Laurel forest is a type of subtropical forest that lives in places with high humidity and relatively stable, mild temperatures. That’s the fun fact for the day! 😉

What to bring on the Fanal Madeira Trail

One of the most important things to bring on this hike is the proper clothes. You’re going near the top of Madeira Island which means wind and cooler weather. So even if it’s sunny and warm where you are before going on the hike, the weather can be completely different up by the Vereda do Fanal and in the Fanal Forest. It never hurts to bring some extra clothes and if it’s warm you can always put them back in your backpack.

A lot of food and water is important too. The hike is over 20 km return and with a good amount of elevation so make sure you bring enough for the trip. We did bring some food but it definitely wouldn’t have hurt to have more during the hike. It’s long and fairly exhausting by the end of it so more food would have been nice!

Other than that, all other standard things you bring on a hike are recommended!

Verada do Fanal packing list:

• Water! We always fill up our LifeStraw bottles before hikes and even during them when we can. Make sure to fill it up beforehand as you won’t be able to fill it during the hike. We recommend bringing at least 1.5L of water.
• Sunscreen is highly recommended when hiking in Madeira. On most hikes in Madeira you’ll be exposed to the sun for good sections of them so it’s good to always have some handy. We say it’s almost always rainy and cloudy here but if it is sunny it will get hot and there will be a few sections with direct exposure!
• A power bank because you never know when you’re going to run out of battery, especially in a foreign country. It’s not the end of the world but it always feels good knowing your phone is not going to die at any minute. 
• Bring some lunch for a nice picnic. We had some food at the midway point and also at the Fanal Forest. The more food the better, right! 😉
• Hiking poles are a good idea as well! There’s quite a bit of incline on this hike so we recommend bringing a set of hiking poles .
• Hiking shoes are really nice to have on this hike. The trail is well maintained but there are stairs, dirt, and loose terrain at certain parts so it’s nice to have proper hiking shoes for it.

Before you hike Vereda do Fanal

Check the weather

No matter where you hike, you should always check the weather before you go. Madeira has a micro-climate so the weather is always changing and can be very different even a few kilometers away. This is the best way to prepare for the hike ahead of you.

Especially in Fanal where more often than not you’ll have rain and fog. This section of the island is known for this kind of weather. Even if it’s sunny in Funchal or Ponta do Sol it’s likely it’s raining in Fanal. You can check the weather for Fanal here .

To be honest there really isn’t a bad day to go to Fanal Madeira. If it’s a clear sunny day then great, you’ll be able to see this beautiful forest. If it’s raining and moody then great because you’ll see the magical side of the Fanal Forest and get some incredible shots.

Wear hiking shoes

It’s a long hike with sections that can get muddy and wet. Some hiking boots are great, especially if they’re waterproof. By the end of the hike you’ll end up walking close to 20 km so some good hiking shoes are recommended!

Book your rental car beforehand  

Unfortunately, you can’t get to Fanal Madeira by bus or public transport so renting a car , private shuttle, or going on a guided tour are your only options. 

There are tons of other hikes that you can take public transport to, but renting a car is totally worth it to go to the Fanal forest. 

If you’re staying in Funchal there are quite a few places you can rent from but we recommend either renting it through Discover Cars from Madeira Airport or going to 7M downtown Funchal and talking with Bruno. He’ll try his best to hook you up with a discount if it’s possible. These are the two cheapest options!

How to get to Vereda do Fanal

The Vereda do Fanal trail is located at the plateau of Paul da Serra in the North-Western part of Madiera, and it might feel like the hike starts in the middle of nowhere. Especially since most people just drive to the Fanal Madeira parking lot to see the trees and don’t actually hike the Vereda do Fanal. So you might have this parking lot to yourself!

The best and cheapest way to get there is to rent a car and drive to the trailhead. If you have a car, it’s easy to get to the trailhead from anywhere on the island. One thing we love about Madeira is the fact that the distances between everywhere are quite short.

Getting to Vereda do Fanal by car

Here are the distances and time frames between Funchal and Vereda do Fanal as well as Ponta do Sol to Vereda do Fanal.

From Funchal to the start of Vereda do Fanal trail:

• 55-minute drive (50 kilometers)
• You can follow the directions from Funchal to Vereda do Fanal here .

From Ponta do Sol to Vereda do Fanal trail:  

• 35-minute drive (20 kilometers)
• You can follow the directions from Ponta do Sol to Vereda do Fanal here .

Going by private and guided tour 

This is another option if you don’t want to rent a car. The nice thing about going on a guided tour is that they’ll pick you up and drop you off right in Funchal. We’ve done a few guided tours when we hiked Levada 25 Fontes and Pico do Arieiro and it was a great way to learn about the island, the hike, and the local flora and fauna.

The only downside is that for this specific hike it is quite a bit more expensive going on a guided tour than renting a car but we still wanted to put the option out there since we really have enjoyed guided tours on the island.

When is the best time to hike Vereda do Fanal

We hiked this in February which is considered to be the slow season in Madeira and because of the rainy and foggy weather the hike wasn’t too crowded. However, during the summer months, it can get really busy with the car park being so close to this cool spot (at least at the actual Fanal Forest).

The hike itself never gets too busy as the main point of attraction is the Fanal Forest but, as we mentioned before, most people will enter the forest from the other side. So the trail will never be overly crowded, especially since most people who do want to go hiking go chasing the waterfalls on Levada 25 Falls or Levada do Alecrim instead.

If you want to see the real magic of the Fanal Forest, go on a more gloomy and rainy day. Try to go early in the morning as well. This way you have more time to do the hike, fewer people around, and by the time you get to Fanal Forest, hopefully, it will be covered in fog. It honestly is the best way to experience this area!

If you’re planning on hiking and visiting Vereda do Fanal yourself you don’t need to book anything in advance. There are options to go on guided tours of the Vereda do Fanal which you should book in advance. Especially during summer months where guided walking tours in Madeira are always booked!

The best way to see Vereda do Fanal is to either rent a car or go on a guided tour of Vereda do Fanal. If you’re looking for a full day trip then you should do the full hike we recommend in this post. If you just want to see the Fanal Forest then the best way to see it is to park at the parking lot right at the beginning of this beautiful forest.

If you really want a unique hiking experience on the island of Madeira you have to hike to the Fanal Forest. Of course, all the Levada hikes, waterfall hikes, and coastal hikes are stunning but Vereda do Fanal is just different and very unique.

It’s not a challenging hike but it is long and has a good amount of incline. However, the forest and the trees in Fanal make it totally worth it. By doing the hike, you get to see a part of Madeira that a lot of tourists don’t end up seeing and that’s what we love about it. 

So, pack your camera, hiking boots, and rain jacket and get ready to have a fun time exploring this part of Madeira.

In this article I share my experience of photographing the beautiful Fanal Forest on Madeira. I give tips on how to get there, where to stay, and when to visit.

The Fanal Forest is famous for fog, and when I was visiting in November of 2021, I was hoping to take some atmospheric landscape photos in such conditions. After spending ten wonderful days at the Portuguese coast near Lisbon , I flew to the island of Madeira, which is just a 90-minute flight. From the airport north of Funchal, I got my rental car and drove directly to the north-western part of the island. It’s where the Fanal Forest is located.

Why Madeira Is Great for Landscape Photography

I spent two full weeks on Madeira. For some people, two weeks might sound a bit too much because the island is not very large and there are nearly no sandy beaches. But beaches are not the reason to visit Madeira. Especially for landscape photographers two weeks can go by very quickly on this mountainous island with its many photographic treasures.

So if you ever have the chance to visit Madeira, plan in enough time. You can photograph scenic vistas, mountains, waterfalls, magical forests, and spectacular coastlines.

Where to Stay

Because I had so much time, I split it to first explore the lush landscapes in the north-western part of the island for one week, and then focus on the east with its mountains and photogenic coastline.

The winding roads and mountains that cover Madeira were the reason for this split. It reduced the time spent in the car by a significant amount. For example, getting from Funchal in the southeast to Porto Moniz in the northwest takes around one hour. If you add a return trip, then this is already two hours spent in the car.

While we stayed in Porto Moniz, we mainly drove around the mountain plateau that contains the ancient Laurisilva forest. There's a nice round-trip you can do, which includes the Fanal Forest, the 25 Fontes Waterfall, and many beautiful Levada Walks. Just take the ER209 and ER110 roads and combine them into a loop. You’ll find many great landscape photography opportunities along the way.

And you might already have guessed it: You need a car on Madeira. We got our rental car from AnaLodges , through whom we also rented our first apartment. I can fully recommend their service as well as the Ocean View Cottage located above Porto Moniz.

When to Visit Madeira

If you are after the beautiful flower bloom, then you should visit Madeira during springtime. From the photos I’ve seen, the island will look wonderful during that time.

But if you’re after moody conditions, which, in my opinion, are needed to photograph the Fanal Forest, the time between the beginning of November and the end of March will give you the highest chance to get those. But it’s still no guarantee you’ll get fog in Fanal. And the conditions during that time can be quite bad for photographing the mountains, with strong winds and a lot of rain.

If I were to visit Madeira again, I would opt for the end of March. There’s already a chance for the flower bloom. And fog in the Fanal Forest is also still common for that time.

Fanal Forest Photography

During the week I had in Porto Moniz, my main photographic focus was the Fanal forest. This ancient laurel forest is a photographer's dream, if the conditions are right. And, if you do a Google search for Fanal , you'll quickly get an idea what those are: Landscape photography in the Fanal Forest typically features fog.

Since I visited Madeira in late November, I was sure that to get a lot of fog in the mountains. Especially for Fanal this is quite common I've been told. But to my surprise, despite plenty of rain in the first days, there was never enough humidity in the air for fog to manifest in this magical forest while other mountainous areas on the island were often shrouded in deep clouds.

Again and again, I drove up to the Fanal Forest to be greeted either by sunny or grey skies, often with a lot of wind. On the first visit, I managed to take a photo I'm quite fond of, though. As you can see above, the sun was casting beautiful shadows that served as an extension to this already very gnarly tree with its many reaching branches.

On sunny days you have to spend a lot of time to find compositions that work in this forest – the photo above is one of the very few successes I had. While this was a good exercise and preparation, after the fifth visit I was really longing for some fog up there. It was hard to get a good weather forecast for the region. The Webcams that are spread all across Madeira were also no real help in predicting the conditions in Fanal.

In the end, I got the best forecast by using the app MadeiraWeather and looking at the conditions in Ribeira de Janela . One day MadeiraWeather finally predicted 100% humidity combined with a light drizzle in the morning, so I started the drive for attempt number six.

And I was rewarded with five hours of dense fog. In the beginning there was much more rain than a light drizzle, but after some time it subsided, and I was able to finally photograph Fanal in prime conditions.

The photos above are just a small excerpt. I photographed a total of 15 different compositions, which I show in the second video linked below. The first video covers the challenges I had the first days and how I had to adapt by finding other subjects to photograph. If you have some time, watch those videos. You'll get good impression of how the area looks, and what you have to do to come away with good photos from there.

As you can see, although Fanal is famous for foggy conditions, even in November there’s no guarantee for fog. So, if you plan a landscape photography trip to Madeira, stay long enough, so you can return to places like the Fanal forest multiple times. Had I not spent a whole week dedicated to this area, I would have been pretty dissapointed.

How to plan an epic summer trip to a national park

We’ve got insider tips on the best times to visit the most popular parks, timed entry passes, and where to stay.

As summer approaches, the siren call of national park adventures grows stronger. However, these iconic sites are bringing in unprecedented crowds.

In 2023, the National Park Service (NPS) reported over 300 million visits , a four percent increase from the previous year. This surge isn’t limited to famous spots; lesser known parks such as Congaree and Dry Tortugas are also experiencing record-breaking numbers. To manage the influx, park authorities are implementing innovative strategies to improve the guest experience.

From snagging the perfect stay to timing your bookings just right, we’ve got insider tips to ensure your national park vacation is nothing short of epic. Here’s what you need to know.

Best time to visit

Timing is crucial in planning your summer getaway, especially if you’re eyeing popular national parks. Finding affordable lodging and activities during the high season can be tricky.

During the shoulder seasons—early- to mid-spring and late fall—you can expect pleasant weather and a reprieve from the crowds, but there are a few trade-offs to consider. Some hotels and lodges might close during the off-season and reopen later in the year, potentially limiting your accommodation options. Additionally, parks at higher elevations, such as Glacier or Lassen Volcanic , may not have all their trails open and could require snowshoes or traction cleats to get around.

Arriving before sunrise has its perks, too. Typically, most visitors don’t arrive until mid-to-late morning, allowing you to enjoy attractions like Arches ’ Windows or Delicate Arch with minimal crowds, provided you arrive early enough.

When permitted, exploring the parks in winter offers a unique perspective that few experience. Yosemite Valley, for instance, transforms into a winter wonderland —a sight cherished by photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Tony McDaniel, a Yosemite   Mariposa County spokesperson, says the best way to plan a visit is to avoid taking a “checklist approach” to your visit.

“Slow down and immerse yourself in the destination,” McDaniel says. “There’s no place on earth like Yosemite National Park , and it’s best seen slowly and outside of a vehicle where you can fully embrace the sights, sounds, and smells.”

What parks require timed entry passes?

Timed entry reservations typically provide access within a two-hour window. The price of the pass, however, does not include the standard park entry fee. But, a separate timed entry permit is unnecessary if you already have campground reservations, a wilderness permit, or bookings for a pre-arranged, park-sponsored activity. Additionally, if you plan to stay inside the park for multiple days, only one timed entry reservation is required—just make sure not to leave the park during your visit.

Although these passes can reduce a trip’s spontaneity, NPS spokeswoman Kathy Kupper says they also lead to better park experiences.

“Visitors love the timed entry system,” Kupper says, “because it gives them increased confidence that they’ll be able to get in and get where they want to go.”

If you miss out on a timed entry reservation, don’t fret. Ditch your car and opt to walk or bike into the park at any time of day. Glacier National Park adjusts its timed entry program annually, including relocating entry gates beyond the visitor center, where guests can hop on a shuttle bus to access the park.

Arches: Timed entry reservations will be required from April 1 to October 31. The reservation system operates on a rolling basis. For example, June 1–30 bookings opened March 1; July 1–31 reservations opened April 1. A limited number of reservations will also be released at 7 p.m. MST the day before, providing some flexibility for last-minute planners to Utah.

Glacier: For travelers intending to drive along the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road or head to North Fork, Montana, a vehicle reservation is mandatory between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. from May 24 to September 8. Similarly, from July 1 to September 8, a reservation is required to access Many Glacier between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. These reservations can be secured up to 120 days or approximately four months in advance, starting at 8 a.m. MST. Additionally, a limited number of next-day vehicle reservations will be released at 7 p.m. MST for those seeking entry on the following day on a rolling basis.

Mount Rainier : Two areas of this Washington State park—Paradise Corridor from the south and Sunrise Corridor from the northeast—will require reservations from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 24-September 2, and July 4-September 2, respectively. Each corridor requires a separate vehicle reservation, valid for a single day per vehicle. Note that reservations are unnecessary when entering the park from a different entrance.

Rocky Mountain :   Between May 24 and October 20, reservations are required for entry into this Colorado park. Two types of reservations will be available: one granting access to the entire park, including the bustling Bear Lake Road Corridor from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., and another from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that excludes access to this corridor. Reservations for May 24 to June 30 can be secured starting at 8 a.m. on May 1. Subsequent reservation releases will follow, with reservations for July becoming available on June 1, and so forth.

Yosemite: Reservations are needed from April to October. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays (May 27, June 19, September 2, and October 14) from April 13 to June 30 and August 17 to October 27, reservations are required from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. From July 1 to August 16, reservations are needed daily during the same hours.

What parks require a specific area pass?

Acadia : In Maine, Cadillac Mountain Summit Road vehicle reservations are required from May 22 to October 27. About one-third of them can be purchased 90 days in advance, while the rest become available two days before, starting at 10 a.m. Reservations cost $6 and are sold only at https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/400000 .

Great Smoky Mountains : While you don’t need a timed entry reservation to enter this Tennessee-North Carolina park, you will need a parking permit to stop for more than 15 minutes. Passes are $5 (daily),   $15 (weekly), and $40 (annually). Permits can be purchased in person or online . Passes are good for one vehicle only.

Haleakalā : To park at Hawaii’s Haleakalā summit for sunrise, you’ll need a parking pass from 3 to 7 a.m. throughout the year.

Shenandoah : Visitors hiking Virginia’s Old Rag Mountain must obtain a $2 day-use ticket in advance from March 1 to November 30. Of the 800 tickets issued daily, 400 will be released 30 days in advance, with the remaining 400 released five days beforehand on https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/10088450/ticket/10088451 .

Zion: You’ll need a timed permit to hike Angel’s Landing in Utah. Lotteries open for June-August hikes on April 1, September-November on July 1, and December-February on October 1. A limited number of next-day licenses will be available at 12:01 a.m. the day before. Hiking groups of up to six people can apply for a permit. Winning groups will be charged an additional $3 per person.

Best alternatives to national parks

If you’re visiting in the summer, don’t have a reservation, and couldn’t get into the park early enough, you still have options. State parks and national forests surrounding official national parks often offer similar views but with few visitors.

For example, if you get shut out of Utah’s Bryce Canyon , you can always drive 15 minutes away to the picturesque Dixie National Forest . Instead of being shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of other visitors on the trails, you’ll be almost entirely alone while overlooking nearly identical scenes.

Where to stay in or near a popular park

Most NPS campgrounds can be reserved six months in advance on a rolling basis through Recreation.gov, but the most popular sites, including Yellowstone ’s Slough Creek or Watchman in Zion , can sell out within minutes. Even if you miss out, you still have plenty of options.  

“For something similar to camping in Yosemite Valley, Housekeeping Camp or Curry Village are as close as you’ll get to camping, plus you don’t need to bring a tent,” says McDaniel. “In areas like Wawona, Yosemite West, and Foresta, there are cabin rentals that will still get you into the park. Outside the park, there are hundreds of more options in great locations and historic towns that are generally more budget-friendly and put visitors close to more dining options.”

Nearby national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas typically offer established campgrounds or free dispersed camping (areas outside a designated campground). Sites are generally first-come, first-served. Arrive at an established campground between 10 a.m. and noon to score a recently vacated site.

Apps like AllStays and sites like freecampsites.net and Campendium can help tremendously. Signal Mountain Campground in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park sells out almost immediately, but on a recent trip to the park, I found an incredible mountaintop dispersed campsite, in   Bridger-Teton National Forest . The view of the Tetons was spectacular, made even better because the campsite was free.
