Botswana by helicopter

Exclusive highlights of Botswana 14-day helicopter tour

Exclusive highlights of Botswana

During this exclusive 14-day trip, you will enjoy the many benefits of touring Botswana by helicopter. That travel between various destinations is fast and comfortable is just the beginning. In the process, you will have an insanely beautiful view of the extraordinary landscapes from the air, and you will get a good impression of the vastness of natural areas and the enormous contrasts between ecosystems. What makes this helicopter tour truly unique is that you can get to places that cannot be reached by other means of transportation. Where the world can't find you...

Makgadikgadi salt pans

Gliding across the landscape, you will see how Ntwetwe pan, Sua pan and Nxai pan are linked into an insanely vast area, the Makgadikgadi salt pans . Between the desolate salt flats, you will see vegetated areas where animal tracks make a tangle of stripes through the field, basalt formations and groups of baobabs. In this almost unearthly landscape is your luxury San camp, the more than benevolent base from which you will make very diverse tours.

Okavango Delta and Tsodilo Hills

You will be guests in a simple but comfortable mobile camp located on the Kweene River . This is a little-visited corner of the world's largest inland delta because the location can only be reached by helicopter. Surrounded by exceptionally pristine nature, you will experience the Okavango Delta to the fullest. You will search for game both by 4WD, by mokoro (canoe) and on foot. By helicopter, you will take an excursion to the remote Tsodilo Hills.

Moremi game reserve

The final days will be spent at the luxurious Xigera safari lodge in the Moremi Game Reserve , in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Game drives and a boat ride, sundowners, relaxing and looking out over the watery landscape, moments of rest at the spa...you decide how to fill these days. At least take advantage of the opportunity to take a helicopter flight to the "panhandle" of the Okavango Delta. It is the area where the waters of the Okavango River fan out over the flat land, providing magnificent panoramas, and a unique opportunity to spot wildlife from the air. Swamp antelopes make the water splash, while herds of elephants wade quietly through the water.

Tips & Tops Botswana by helicopter:

  • Luxury trip where helicopter transportation and all activities are entirely on a private basis
  • Starting point of this trip is Maun; end point is either Maun or Vic Falls , at your choice
  • You will stay in two luxury lodges and an adventurous but comfortable camp in the middle of the Okavango Delta, serving as a base camp for all your activities
  • The best characterization for the mobile camp near the Kweene River is ' simplistic luxury.' You will have your own canvas tent with simple but comfortable beds, simple but very clean private bathroom facilities, and you can use a lovely lounge area. Every evening a campfire is lit
  • Various helicopter excursions, sometimes flying at low altitude so you can spot wildlife from the air. During some excursions, it is permitted to leave the helicopter doors open for an unobstructed view of the landscape
  • Heli excursions to Kubu Island , Lost Island of Baobabs and the village of Eretsha
  • Heli excursion to the heart of the Ntwetwe salt pan , where it is bizarrely quiet
  • Heli-flight over lake with flamingos
  • Hiking with Bushmen (aka: San )
  • Heli excursion to the Tsodilo hills , where thousands of petroglyphs testify that humans and animals have lived here for many thousands of years
  • Multiple excursions in the Okavango Delta, whether by 4WD, by mokoro (canoe) or on foot. You will look for elephants, lions, hyenas, puku, hippos, giraffes, buffalo, leopards, crocodiles and more....

Helicopter Safaris Tour

Scenic helicopter flights over the Delta’s patchwork landscape of islands, plains, and lagoons perfectly illustrate its raw and spectacular beauty. The Delta is one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena, featuring a series of both permanent and fleeting waterways and floodplains created when the waters of the Okavango River sink into the sands of the Kalahari Desert.

With many of the Delta’s most remote areas not reachable in any other way, an aerial perspective is the ideal way to gaze onto the vast Delta and its meandering labyrinth of crystal-clear channels.

Depending on weather conditions, Safaris can be done anytime during the day.

The duration of this activity is around 45 minutes.

Helicopters provide a unique perspective of the delta. Used both to conduct air transfers and for scenic flights, a flight over the delta is not to be missed.

Helicopter Horizons is a Maun based operator offering a range of air transfers and scenic flight options.

Air Transfers

Travelling between camps by helicopter gives the visitor an outstanding perspective of the breathtaking beauty of this water wonderland. The views of the delta are complemented by pilot commentary about the delta throughout. Both Robinson and Bell helicopters for these transfers and all flights are private. Champagne stops on palm islands can be arranged by prior arrangement at an additional cost and are highly recommended.

Scenic Flights

Operating from most camps in the delta scenic flights allow visitors to explore the delta for 30, 45 or 60 minutes. These flights depart from locations deep in the delta and immediately allow visitors breathtaking views of the crystal clear waters of the Okavango and the large animals which live within the delta.

Scenic flights can be conducted throughout the day with photographers often choosing early morning or late afternoon and other guests preferring to fly during siesta periods so not to miss any game activities. Doors are removed to allow for uninterrupted photographic and video opportunities – a big advantage to the transfers where doors must remain on due to the baggage on board.

Scenic flights from Maun can also be arranged – flying deep into the Okavango to the permanent waterways. The return flight takes you over the seasonal floodplains and west of the main Boro channel. The flight covers the South Western portion of the Okavango system.

Rates start at $325 for 30 minutes, $490 for 45 minutes and $640 for 60 minutes per person. A 15 minute champagne stop can be added for an additional $50 per person. There is a departure tax of $20 per person payable too.

Excursions and Helicopter Safaris

Helicopters allow visitors to explore areas of the delta and surrounding country which would normally be inaccessible. Departing from the delta’s camps and lodges visitors can visit traditional villages or the rock paintings of the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

VILLAGE TRIP

This two hour excursion allows visitors to complement their wildlife experience with an insight into the traditional way of life some local people still lead, deeply respectful of the delta. Led by a local guide visitors gain an understanding of all aspects of village life including architecture, religious beliefs, hunting and fishing. There is an opportunity to meet local craftspeople.

TSODILO HILLS

Sacred to the San Bushmen, the Tsodilo Hills have been inscribed as a World Heritage Site. These rocky hills contain over 4500 rock paintings, some dating back over 26 000 years. Accompanied by a San guide, visitors develop an insight into this extensive artwork and an understanding of a way of life few get to experience.

An absolutely superb trip, and this is entirely down to Okavango Delta Explorations. Louise carefully listened to what we wanted to get from the trip, and despite my work schedule patiently kept me informed of all developments in our honeymoon and planned everything. I can't fault Louise or the company's approach to organising this trip. No question or request was too much and everything was planned perfectly. We will definitely be returning and using the company again.

Helicopter Tours Botswana

Helicopter rides in botswana.

Located in the Southern art of the African continent, Botswana has become a top tourist destination for all those who want to enjoy the wild and this is due to the fact that the largest part of the country was set apart for National Parks and game reserves in order to preserve the wild life in the country. Getting to the country is quite easy as there are many flights that can get you to the country and the same goes for moving around Botswana. Some tourists drive around the country to their various destinations, others cycle whereas others use the now trendy helicopter to get to the different tourist destinations easily.

A helicopter ride around Botswana is what you could term as a scenic safari round Botswana. With the many beautiful sceneries that you get to see from above and not forgetting getting to the different tourist destinations around the country in a short period of time, this is one ride that you should try out once you visit Botswana.

Most helicopter rides in Botswana are good for all those that love photography because the only way you will be able to enjoy all that it has to offer is by either taking photos or capturing videos of whichever region that you are flying over. Helicopter rides in Botswana normally begin from Maun and they head out to the different destinations within the country like the Okavango delta, the Tsodilo hills, Moremi game reserve and many more exciting tourist destinations that cannot easily be accessed by road.

Before you get onto the helicopter ride, there are a few things that you need to know about helicopter riding in Botswana and these are:

  • The helicopters have no doors and glasses so that you get a clear view of the wilderness below
  • They take about three passengers and not more which means that you all get a clear view of the vast land below.
  • Do not forget to carry your camera, binoculars and a video cam in order to capture the best of what Botswana has from an aerial point of view.
  • The idea of having helicopter rides in Botswana came about 20 years ago and it was aimed at easily accessing the remote areas in Botswana and to help tourists who had limited visiting the when country to go to various tourist destinations in an extremely short period of time. Although the rides do not take long and some people think that it is all a waste of money, it is just another way of exploring all the tourist destinations in Botswana from a different point of view and perspective.

Helicopter rides to the Tsodilo hills

The Tsodilo hills commonly known for their rock paints that date back to the Bushmen days is a good tourist destination for tourists and a helicopter ride is the best way to get to the hills. They are also considered to be a holy place by the San and they can be seen going up to the top of the hill for worship. It has great trek routes which include the lion hill trek route, the cliff trek route, the Rhino trek route and these can all be used for trekking up to the top of the hill and the view that they give off with the rock paints is worth seeing. A helicopter ride above the Tsodilo hills will reward with the largest concentration of rocks in the world with decorations of different animal paintings and overhead view of the Tsodilo hills.

Helicopter rides to Botswana villages

Most of the villages that are found in Botswana are extremely hard to get to and this is due to the bad roads that have not been worked on and the flooding that takes place on some roads during the dry season and the only way one can get there is by going for a helicopter ride. There are helicopter rides offered to the different villages where you get to meet different locals and find out about their way of life and their culture. You will first be rewarded with an aerial view of the villages before landing and when you land, you will be welcomed by a local tour guide who will take you through the different traditions practiced by the locals both cultural and religious traditions, you get to participate in the different activities carried like fishing before sitting down to enjoy the stories that told by elders while eating their tasty food. When flying back, make sure you get good photos of the aerial view of the villages, their landscapes and both the wild and domestic animals that they have.

Helicopter ride over the chobe National Park

The Chobe National park is one of the biggest National Parks in Botswana with a lot to offer when it comes to wild life in the country. The National park has a great view when you drive through but if you want to get a different perspective, then a helicopter ride from Kasane over the Park is one way to get to see the animals, birds and the landscape that makes up the park. The helicopter ride over chobe takes about fifteen minutes and the tour is always conducted in English. Take as many photos and videos of the park from above and some of the things that you will see include the include Impalas, jackals, crocodiles, hippos, lions, leopards, buffalos, zebras, elephants, elephants and the almost endangered Puku antelope, leopards and other natural features like the Victoria falls and the Zambezi River.

Helicopter ride over the Okavango Delta

The helicopter rides over the Okavango Delta are some of the best in Botswana as you get to see many wild life species at the same time in a short period of time. Some tourists use helicopters when they are transferring to different camps but if you think the delta is cool by just driving through then wait till you go for a helicopter ride above it. The vast landscape, animals within the park that include zebras, impalas, elephants, elands, lions, antelopes, leopards, kudus and not forgetting the view that the Okavango River and the many Mokoro canoes give off when taking an aerial photo of the whole delta. The helicopter ride over the Okavango delta might not last long but the experience is what you will not forget and they can also be used in trekking animals especially elephants.

Helicopter ride over the salt pans in Botswana

Botswana is a home to the largest salt pans in the world and these are shared between two national parks that is the Makgadikgadi national park and the Nxai salt pan National Park. These are best seen during the dry season since during the wet season, they are not accessible but the full effect can be got from a helicopter. As you fly over the pans, you will get a clear picture of the salt pans themselves, the animals that roam around them during the green season and the beauty about going for a safari to the salt pans in a helicopter is that they are accessible all year round.

A helicopter ride over the salt pans is another chance for you to witness the second largest animal migration in Africa that is the annual zebra migration that crosses through the pans in search of pasture before heading out into Linyati and Savuti and if you ever get a chance to take a helicopter ride over the Makgadikgadi salt pan and the Nxai salt pan in the dry season and the green season, you will notice how different it looks from an aerial point of view in both seasons that is the green season will be flooded with water and all the bird species whereas the dry season gives you the real picture of what the salt pans look like.

Helicopter rides to the Moremi game reserve

The Moremi game reserve is the largest game reserve in Botswana and one of the helicopter safari destinations for tourists in the country. Some of the herds of animals that you get to see when you visit the moremi include the buffalos, giraffes, zebras, lions, hyenas, the red Lechwe, jackals, the black rhinos, hippos, impalas cheetahs and the many bird species that can be seen during the green season like the goliath herons, African fish skimmer, the slaty egret, the green winged Pytilia, marabou storks, the African fish eagle, , the lesser jacana, the greater painted snipes, the gray herons, pelicans and  the African pygmy geese.

The helicopter rides in Botswana are organized by professionals and the pilots that take on the rides are so informative because they act as your tour guides throughout the ride and tell you all about what you will see in the different destinations that you will be taken to. Not all helicopter doors are removed so that you enjoy the ride but the choice of the helicopter is chosen by the tourists.

A complete guide to all the destinations and attractions in Africa, featuring the tour operators or safari companies to take you there. All special interest activities you can ever think of, wildlife safaris , gorilla trekking , chimpanzee , water rafting , scuba diving , balloon safaris , island beach holidays , canoeing , cruises , fishing , mountain climbing , wildebeest migration , canopy tours , African safaris for the disabled , safaris for single travelers , African photo safari , horse riding tours , camping safaris , golf tours , bungee jumping , walking safaris and african family safaris.
