What is there to do at the Griffith Observatory?

The Griffith Observatory is a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike. How do I get there?

The easiest way to get to the Observatory is via the hiking trails starting near the Greek Theatre or Ferndell Nature Museum or simply by catching the DASH Observatory shuttle from the Vermont/Sunset Metro Red Line station to the observatory.

What are the opening hours of the Griffith Observatory?

Griffith Observatory is open from noon to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, with extended hours on weekends. The surrounding Griffith Park is open from sunrise until 10 p.m. and you can explore a variety of other attractions and activities there before the observatory opens. Entry to Griffith Park and the observatory is free, with a small fee of $3-$7 to see the planetarium shows.

Alcatraz, San Francisco

What is Alcatraz?

Alcatraz, also known as “The Rock”, is an Island of the coast of San Francisco, where America’s most infamous penitentiary was once located. The dark reputation of the island draws over a million visitors to its shores each year. It was the first American built fort on the West Coast and served as a federal prison from 1934 to 1963. During the years it was active, Alcatraz’s prison was home to many notorious criminals and mobsters amongst its ranks: Al Capone, Bumpy Johnson, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) to name but a few. The island’s isolation in the middle of San Francisco Bay made the prison an ideal place to hold such dangerous criminals, as it was assumed that anyone who tried to escape would drown or freeze to death. However, there were a total of 14 escape attempts during the years it was open, which have inspired countless movies about Alcatraz.

What is there to see on Alcatraz?

Although the prison was off limits to the public for many years, it is now open during the night time to self-guided tours and guided tours. You can not only see the cells where prisoners spent most of their time, but also the prison kitchen, hospital, courtyard and the warden’s house. The self-guided tours are narrated from the point of view of the prisoners and give you unique insights into what life was like in this former maximum-security prison.

One cannot miss the view of San Francisco’s skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge from the prison’s gardens.

The only way to reach the prison is via ferry from Pier 33 next to Fisherman's Wharf, but don’t forget to buy tickets in advance as they often sell out very quickly.

Todd, our tour manager, provided detailed manuscripts of daily cultural insights as well as lists of dining options and activities that could be performed during free times in the tour. He was also consistently available to answer questions and provide assistance with timing activities during free periods such that rejoining group activities was seamless. The accommodations were of very high quality and located in established neighborhoods of the cities in which we stayed. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe to explore the areas around the hotel and find new dining experiences. Jose, our coach driver, had a delightful sense of humor and provided safe, easy transitions during travel days. Overall, the tour was reasonably paced and provided an excellent value for the price. Thank you for a great, organized travel experience. I will definitely be booking with this tour company in the future!

17-Mile Drive

California's 17-Mile Drive is a spellbinding and awe-inspiring route that weaves along the most scenic stretch of the Monterey Bay coastline. This must-visit road, winding through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach, takes drivers up into the Del Monte Forest, past palatial mansions and down along picture-perfect craggy beaches and bluffs. Take time to stop at the various lookout points marked along the way, including the famous Lone Cypress.

If you're interested in bedding down in Pebble Beach, consider splurging on a room, or at least stopping for a meal, to behold the stunning scenery that surrounds the properties at Pebble Beach Resorts, including The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay . The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

Santa Cruz to Pacifica – 67 Miles

Fields of wildflowers hug the gently sloping hills on one side of the road between Santa Cruz and Pacifica, while rocky cliffs drop precipitously into the crashing waves of the wild Pacific Ocean below on the other. After exploring the rides at the Boardwalk and watching the surfers ride the waves along West Cliff Drive in the laid-back beach town of Santa Cruz, start your journey north to Davenport. This quaint little town perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean is so tiny that you’d miss it if you blink, but it’s well known for two quirky restaurants , the Davenport Roadhouse and Whale City Bakery.

After a lunch of clam chowder or calamari, continue north. Go past Swanton Berry Farm and a string of rugged beaches before stopping to see the elephant seals at Año Nuevo State Park. The next stop is the historic Pigeon Point Lighthouse, built in 1871 and the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States. Pull into the lovely town of Pacifica as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean, and grab a bite at what’s been dubbed “The World’s Most Beautiful Taco Bell,” perched directly on the shores of Pacifica State Beach.

Carmel to Pismo Beach – 168 Miles

The 168-mile stretch between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pismo Beach along the rugged California coast is one of the most spectacular road trips in the world. Towering mountains rise to the heavens on one side, with cliffs dropping precariously to the sea on the other. Craggy rocks dot the coastline, creating spectacular vistas as wild waves crash to shore after their long journey across the Pacific. Make your first stop along this rugged, windy drive at the Bixby Bridge Vista Point to photograph the famous Bixby Bridge. The most photographed bridge on the U.S. West Coast, the Bixby Bridge was built in 1930 and is one of the tallest single-span concrete bridges in the world.

Next, stop at the Big Sur Bakery for the fantastic cinnamon rolls or a wood-fired pizza before continuing south on Highway 1 to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur for a bracing hike through one of the best places to see redwoods in California . A further 65 miles south is a highlight of the road trip—Hearst Castle. A grand historic estate built by the publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst in 1919, Hearst Castle is one of California’s most visited historic monuments. After you tour the 165-room castle, continue the final 53 miles to Pismo Beach to stay overnight in one of the quirky retro-style motels along the beach. Note: Highway 1 is often closed in the winter due to mudslides, so be sure to check for road closures before your trip.

Sacramento to Yosemite – 141 Miles

Yosemite National Park is the fifth most visited National Park in the U.S., for good reason. As soon as you enter its magnificent borders, you feel as though you’ve stepped foot in a magical realm. Granite peaks soar overhead, waterfalls crash hundreds of feet to the valley floor below, and a vast collection of animals roam uninhibited throughout the picturesque landscape. While Yosemite is a gorgeous destination on its own, the road trip to get there is half the fun.

Start your journey in the state capital of Sacramento, the once rollicking wild west town best known as the starting point of the California Gold Rush in 1849. Take a historical walking tour of Old Sacramento’s underground before hitting the road south on State Route 99. Wend through the Central Valley’s golden fields before heading east towards the rustic Gold Rush Country town of Angel’s Camp, one of the area’s most important mining communities in the Mother Lode region during the gold rush. Travel back in time as you walk down the main street past 19th-century storefronts before continuing on State Route 4 to Mercer Caverns just outside the town of Murphy’s. These spectacular caves formed 12 million years ago feature guided tours and exquisite examples of stalactites and stalagmites.

Before you reach Yosemite, stop for an hour or two in the charming Columbia State Historic Park, a former Gold Rush mining town that has been entirely preserved. Mine for gold, visit a historic saloon, or even ride a stagecoach. Finally, drive the last 68 miles to the Yosemite Valley Vista Point, a stunning overlook that gives you a bird’s eye view of California’s most popular national park. Northern California Volcanoes – 216 Miles

A popular ski area and stratovolcano in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Mount Shasta last erupted 3,200 years ago. Pop into the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum to learn more about the local history before returning to Interstate 5.

SPOILER ALERT:  This post contains spoilers for “Life Is a Highway,” the eighth episode of “ The Girls on the Bus ” Season 1, now streaming on Max.

When Rina Mimoun first produced an episode of television about abortion, she had no idea she’d be doing the same thing more than two decades later. “The Girls on the Bus” showrunner, who worked with Greg Berlanti on the “very special episode” of “Everwood” about women’s rights in 2001, did just that with the eighth episode of the Max series, which debuted on Thursday.

“I might not agree with the choice but it doesn’t mean that I can’t be there for my friend,” she told her.

In an exclusive interview, Mimoun and Benoist open up about the pivotal storyline, how it was different from telling the story in 2001 and the importance of normalizing the situation.

Rina, at what part in your process did this storyline become part of Sadie’s arc?

Melissa Benoist : I thought it made a lot of sense for Sadie. As Rina was saying, the situation and the circumstances these women are in lend themselves so well to the storytelling that makes this particular way that we’re doing so powerful and realistic and in a post-Dobbs world, that much more pivotal and frightening. But I just was so struck by how real this felt. We get to see Sadie in real time deal with our current situation, state by state as they’re traveling.

Obviously having Kimberlyn be the one to drive her was an important part of the story. Was that always going to be the point with Kimberlyn saying, I don’t agree with your choice, but I’ll help my friend?

RM: I’ve had one point of view on this particular subject for a very long time. We read this article that was between a mother and a daughter; the daughter was pro-choice and her mother was not. The article was this touching, civilized discourse between these two women who weren’t going to let this particular issue divide them. I was really struck by it, because I fully admit, I often let it divide me. And when I read that, I thought, well, that’s really something and really beautiful. Kimberlyn is conservative. She absolutely would not make the choice to have an abortion, which I think is embedded in the term “pro-choice.” It was Sadie’s choice and she sees the value in being her friend. We thought that was the way to show that politics and partisanship don’t have to rip us apart and even an issue as divisive and personal as this, if you have love for each other and value each other, you can get through pretty much anything together. That’s what the show is really about.

Sadie’s been through a lot. Melissa, how did you emotionally tap into this storyline?

MB: I really appreciated a conversation Rina and I while we were shooting this episode about the agony. Sadie’s agony is not that “I have to do this.” It’s the, “How am I supposed to do it?” So that was my way in emotionally. Sadie was not emotionally distraught by the fact that she had made this choice and she knew it was right for her and her body. She was very certain and had a lot of clarity in that regard. But it was the fact that the circumstances were so out of her control and the rage was more what she was feeling she couldn’t easily find care for herself. It was kind of meta on set. We had Kyra Sedgwick directing this, who’s also a massive activist for women’s rights. All of us were just angry because I think in real time, as we were shooting this episode, laws were changing and things were going haywire. So it was easy to find that way in because all of us were living it in real time.

Rina, you produced “Everwood” when they had an abortion storyline. In it, Treat Williams’ doctor stated, “Whatever choice you make is right, as long as it’s yours.” How was the experience different now — not only being 21 years later but also producing for The WB versus Max?

So I have to guess that this process was very different from that.

RM: Well, it was incredibly powerful and it was so meaningful. I think because it was network, because “Everwood” was a very specific type of show, it did feel like — I hate to use the term — but a very special episode. We sort of treated it with kid gloves. We had to. We had to approach it from the agony of the decision-making itself. The show had a slightly more earnest bent to it. I like to say hopeful, because I feel like “earnest” somehow gets a bad rap. What we were so anxious to do here — and we were just so lucky to have Max as our partner and they had no problem with it — and the joy was to be able to write it as a normal story. This is what happens. It was not very special. There were a million other things happening in Sadie’s life and as she was saying, the anger, the rage and the feelings were about the helplessness that she felt, but it wasn’t about the decision. To me, beyond even just talking about abortion, it’s normalizing women’s bodies. It’s demystifying women’s bodies. Even the way this whole storyline starts is by Lola coming in saying, “I need a tampon.” I remember being Lola’s age, you used to have to smuggle your tampons like it was heroin, and God forbid anyone saw you carrying a tampon around. You feel so ashamed. I love everything about this show saying, everything we do with our bodies is normal. It’s our bodies. It’s our healthcare, and it doesn’t have to be this catastrophic, shame-driven unspeakable thing. It was a real shift. And by the time we were writing it, Roe was gone. So we knew you couldn’t just do a simple walk-in to a clinic. The whole world has shifted since “Everwood.”

Another big difference here was having abortion pills, not having Sadie go into a clinic. Was that a discussion you had?

RM: I’m a little older so when my friends were tragically in this situation, the medical abortion wasn’t something that was around. That’s slightly more recent. All of the writers in the room said, “This is what she would naturally do. She wouldn’t need to go in.” So it does seem like that is the wave of the future for more women, to have access to these pills, which of course is now being taken away as well.

MB: I think it’s great that we were able to show the pill as an option, in a narrative way. Because I think historically, we’ve seen these stories told and it’s these traumatic, horrific experiences most of the time in a clinic setting. So I thought it was really refreshing how pedestrian the procedure and what she goes through is. So that was something that I was really proud of that we were able to do.

How do you think viewers will feel about the storyline or have reacted thus far to the series?

RM: The internet is such a crazy place and people voice some really crazy things and some of the stuff that’s been said about the show… I’ve been more upset when people call these women silly. There is nothing silly about them. You can not like the show, you can wish that we made “All the President’s Men” and that’s an excellent film that we didn’t set out to do. But I find there’s like an ingrained sexism in a lot of the ways that people react, so I’m sure people are gonna have feelings. I’m sure they’re gonna be mad at the choice. I read one thing someone wrote about how Sadie’s going to be really struggling with the choice because Loafers loves her and so why wouldn’t they start a family?

RM: I was like, they’re not even remotely together!

I mean, going off of that, did you discuss Sadie’s decision to tell Malcolm (Brandon Scott) about the abortion?

RM: That was big argument in the room, because the room was really split down the middle in terms of does she owe him the truth? And then it becomes more about, take this particular situation out of it. Who are these characters to each other outside of this situation? We were genuinely split. I noticed it was a lot of the younger people in the room said, “She shouldn’t tell him. It’s not his business. It’s sending the wrong message to tell him.” I heard that argument but I also just felt Sadie’s journey in this story is sort of coming to the realization of how much she cares for this person, how much she trusts and actually does love him. I’m like, if he was a one night stand, if this was an accident, I get it. I said, but this is someone she really cares about. For me, I didn’t feel like Sadie would do that. I think her growth is trying to connect with people she actually cares about.

MB: I agree with you. I think it I think it just serves even more as a normalizing of sorts. It’s a part of her arc of becoming a more mature, honest person who holds herself accountable. I think telling him, the audience getting to see him be a pillar of support without questioning what she knows is right for herself when they’re not married — their relationship status is up in the air, at best — and their situation is so such an outlier to what like what what we can say as normal, it’s another opportunity that we took to normalize what a relationship can look like. [It shows] that timing is everything for a woman and the fact that we have the ability to make the choice. Relationships can survive this situation. So I thought it served us even more in that regard. We’re just in the business of trying to normalize. And also, his reaction will define their relationship and either strengthen or crumble it. I think that he shows his true colors in the way that he reacts.

15 people injured when tram collides with guardrail at Universal Studios theme park near Los Angeles

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — More than a dozen people suffered mostly minor injuries when a tram used for tours crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, authorities and the company said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday to the theme park in Universal City, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA, the agency said in a social media post.

The California Highway Patrol said that while the tram was negotiating a turn, its last car collided with a metal guardrail, “causing it to tilt and eject multiple passengers.”

The fire department said 15 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The highway patrol’s statement on Sunday said some of the injuries were moderate, but didn’t specify a number.

Universal Studios Hollywood said in a statement Sunday afternoon that tours have resumed with a modified route.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor. We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority,” the statement said.

The highway patrol, which is leading the investigation, said alcohol and drugs were not considered a factor.

The tram circuit, called the World-Famous Studio Tour, offers a glimpse behind the scenes of Universal movies including “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tour starting Friday.

Crime and public safety | chaotic dublin prison closure leads to fighting, crying, cutting, inmates say, “i understand that we’re criminals,” one inmate says. “but we’re still human beings.”.

Closing the women’s federal prison in Dublin was supposed to put a swift end to the abuse and dysfunction of the troubled facility. But inmates say the chaotic and hurried transfer of 600 inmates this past week to prisons as far as Minnesota and Miami has wrought suffering all its own.

Prisoners have been sent on grueling cross-country bus trips and flights — some without medical prescriptions or sanitary products, prisoners say — with little sense of their destination.

“We were all bruised up on our wrists because of the fact that they put the handcuffs on so tight and so long,” inmate Vaudencia Hamilton told the Bay Area News Group in a phone call Tuesday from the Miami prison after a three-day journey by bus and plane. She went without her diabetes medication throughout the trip, she said, and felt “dizzy and sick and nauseated.”

Shuttering the federal correctional institution in Dublin comes in the aftermath of a “rape club” culture that led to criminal charges against eight jail officers, seven of whom have since been sentenced. One judge called the facility, also riddled with mold and asbestos, a “dysfunctional mess.”

But as Hamilton put it after her ordeal, “the men went to prison, and we got the punishment.”

Nearly a dozen inmates, most incarcerated on drug charges, and their relatives reached out to the Bay Area News Group over recent days to describe the chaos and anxiety they say the prisoners experienced during the frenetic move.

There was so much confusion during the first days of transfers last week that some inmates languished for upwards of five hours on buses in the Dublin prison parking lot before returning to their cells without explanation. Their only meal was frozen sandwiches, they said. Toilet paper on the bus ran out.

“People were crying. I had anxiety the whole time,” inmate Sara Victoria, 47, told the Bay Area News Group last week after she was stuck on the parked bus. “We just didn’t know where we were going and what we were doing.”

“I have witnessed people fighting. I have witnessed people crying. I have witnessed people drinking pills because they just want to pass out and not think about it. I have witnessed people vomiting,” inmate Maria Morales Rodriguez, 43, said. “Another lady over here next to me, she was cutting herself. We have witnessed all of that. And even officers over here are crying because that’s how crazy it is.”

Inmates with children who live in the Bay Area and were able to visit their loved ones in prison fear they won’t see their kids again. Those with pending release dates to halfway houses worry those plans will be lost in the chaos. And those who formed tight friendships in the prison are panicked about adjusting to new facilities.

“I understand they’re closing down the prison,” inmate Margarita Rosales said. “I understand that we’re criminals. I can totally understand that. But we’re still human beings.”

Benjamin O’Cone, a spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons, declined Monday to answer a list of questions about the inmates’ concerns or the status of the shutdown.

Instead, he reissued a statement from Bureau of Prisons Director Collette Peters saying that despite efforts to address employee misconduct, aging infrastructure and the culture of the prison, the Dublin facility “is not meeting expected standards” so must be closed.

The low-security federal prison has played host to a who’s who of female inmates, from Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss to convicted SLA bankrobber Patty Hearst, heiress of the William Randolph Hearst media empire, who was later pardoned by then-President Bill Clinton. Squeaky Fromme and Sara Jane Moore, convicted of trying to assassinate President Gerald Ford, were housed there, and more recently, actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, for their roles in the Varsity Blues college admissions scam.

An inmate rights group, California Coalition For Women Prisoners, filed for an emergency temporary restraining order Friday attempting to halt the transfers, but inmates said that a majority of the prisoners had already been cleared out by Sunday.

It’s unclear how many inmates remain behind Tuesday. Over the course of the scandal, prisoners have filed some 60 civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault.

As part of prison policy, officials said they would attempt to keep inmates “as close to their release locations as possible.”

But Thuy Nguyen, of San Jose, says her sister, inmate Trang Nguyen, was shipped to Miami some 3,000 miles away from her three young children who live in the Bay Area. They visited her nearly every weekend and played together on slides in a prison playground.

Her youngest, a 2-year-old son who has been raised by his father since he was 6 months old, was just starting to connect with her.

“He found a bond and was comfortable with her,” Nguyen said. “And then now all of a sudden it’s not happening.”

On Thursday, Nguyen said her sister was sent by bus from Dublin to Nevada, then flew with about 60 other prisoners to Georgia, then traveled by bus with about half of them another 12 hours to Miami.

“Her hands were tied. Her legs were tied,” Nguyen said of her sister. “Imagine sitting like that for about three days.”
