Europe has long been the global centre for business innovation

For students of Economics and/or Business Studies, Europe is a rich hunting ground for insights and experiences to enhance vocational learning.

You don't have to go far, a school trip to London to see the stock exchange in action or a stroll through the streets of the City will give the student an eye-opening perspective of the wealth that is generated there, manifested vividly in the architecture and the workers within.

Further afield, a trip to Berlin , Brussels or any major capital such as Madrid or Paris will further increase a student's awareness of the mechanisms that make the global economy tick.

8 school trip ideas: Business Studies

School trips to provide inspiration for tomorrow’s young entrepreneurs.

It is vital for pupils to gain an understanding of the business world to prepare them for the jobs market. In addition to equipping students with practical skills, Business Studies is a dynamic subject that also covers communication, problem solving, team work, decision making and time management.

In a recent speech education secretary Michael Gove said: “For each individual young person, for each individual business, and for the wider economy, it’s never been more important to provide skills that lead to employment.”

Here are eight ideas that offer memorable learning opportunities and introduce pupils to the world of business.

1. Chelsea Football Club

The Business of Football provides an exciting insight into matchday and non-matchday operations at Chelsea Football Club. Aimed at complementing GCSE studies, students complete an education workbook with answers provided by an experienced guide.

The tour and case study focus on merchandise, marketing, finance and staffing. It’s also a good resource for coursework and revision related to sport, leisure and tourism.

Teachers can also combine the session with a guided stadium tour that gives pupils access to areas of Stamford Bridge normally reserved for players and officials. All stadium tours include entry to the onsite museum.

2. Blenheim Palace

The ancestral home of the 11th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, Blenheim Palace combines history with modern subjects such as Media and Business Studies.

The education department offers talks and tours which look at the palace as a tourist destination and the issues it faces as both an international attraction and World Heritage Site.

The 18th century palace has starred in historical films including Hamlet and The Young Victoria, and more recently it can be seen in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Gulliver’s Travels.

Looking behind the scenes, pupils are asked to consider the pros and cons of allowing film crews to use the palace.

3. Cadbury World

Learn about chocolate and the corporate world at Cadbury World in Bournville, Birmingham.

The attraction has downloadable worksheets for students to use as they tour the attraction, with two devoted to business studies for KS3 and above. They both focus on different facets of business, including production, merchandising and display, marketing and promotion, people in organisations, customer service and retailing.

Pupils will find out how the UK confectionery market is broken down into five different categories, such as snacking, sharing and giving, and learn how identify sales and promotions techniques. Educational talks are available to groups of 30 or more students.

4. Alton Towers

A variety of talks are offered in the dedicated education centre at Alton Towers, including a business-themed session. Keeping customers happy is vital to a theme park’s success, and KS4 and KS5 pupils will find out how Alton Towers motivates its staff to deliver excellent customer service and how the park manages visitors’ expectations.

Using Alton Towers as a case study for the hospitality industry, students will explore the products and services the resort has to offer. The talk also covers employment, the variety of roles and their structure, providing an insight into a ‘day in the life’ of a staff member. Workshops end with a question and answer session.

5. Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

On a visit to Wales make tracks to the Ffestiniog Railway. Founded by an act of parliament in 1823, it’s the world’s oldest independent railway company and was formed to bring slate from the quarries of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the newly created harbour town of Porthmadog.

In more recent years, the tourist traffic has made a significant impact on the social aspects of the area, bringing in money and creating jobs.

Its sister heritage line, the newly completed West Highland Railway, was a huge engineering project covering some of the most sensitive areas of Snowdonia.

Pupils will learn how the railway worked with wildlife agencies such as the Countryside Council for Wales and the RSPB as well as local landowners and government bodies. For schools interested in following the story of ‘slates to the sea’ a joint visit with Llechwedd Slate Caverns is recommended.

6. RAF Museum London

Situated on the historic site of Hendon’s London Aerodrome in Colindale, this north London museum is one of two – the other is located in Cosford in the West Midlands - that tells the story of the Royal Air Force through its people and collections.

The London collections include some very early aircraft designs through to the latest modern day jets and military aircraft. At a Business Studies session for KS5 and above, students will find out how the museum markets itself and functions as a business through a presentation followed by a question and answers session.

A separate workshop focuses on the museum’s operation in the leisure and tourism sector and includes a SWOT analysis session where students learn how to evaluate a business venture’s strengths and weaknesses.

Sessions can be tailored to suit specific needs and also linked to a self-guided visit with the help of downloadable museum worksheets.

7. Spinnaker Tower

Soaring 170-metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, the Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben and will make a lasting impression on students.

The tower’s education resource pack provides many cross-curricular links, including Business Studies. For example, KS3 pupils can study the effects of tourism on the local economy and learn how to interpret statistics and diagrams.

For KS4 and KS5 the tower has teamed with Action Stations, based in nearby Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, to offer an informative workshop that focuses on aspects of two contrasting attractions. This includes customer service, different types of businesses working in competition and as partners, marketing and media.

8. Twycross Zoo

A trip involving animals is always popular and Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire combines lessons on wildlife and the natural world with insightful sessions that help pupils focus on business and careers.

The extensive range of GCSE sessions include taking an in depth look at business and customer services at the zoo, marketing and careers. Older pupils can have first-hand experience of what it is like to work in a zoo through four themed career days.

The structured programme of activities and presentations cover zoo keeping, veterinary practice, animal behaviour research and conservation. They can be booked individually or as a series of days for the same group.

Are you looking for a way to help your students take the business theory they’ve learned in the classroom and see how it applies in the ‘real world’? Then take your students on a trip to the business and financial capitals of the world!

Read more Read more about Business Studies School Trips

Business studies school trips abroad.

We offer a wide range of educational visits and tours to different cities and countries, tailor-made to support the curriculums for business and economics students.

For example, our business studies trips can include visits to large organisations and institutions, like the stock exchanges in Barcelona , Frankfurt and New York , as well as busy newspapers, TV towers, glass manufacturers, and even diamond factories.

A trip to Frankfurt or New York would see your business students explore one of the world’s most important financial centres, where they can learn about how and why these cities have become so important to the global economy.

Or you could visit Disneyland® Paris to discover the marketing behind the magic, or head to the other side of the world to see how Japan has become a world leader in innovation and technology.

For something a little different, why not head to Prague , where you can discover how the country’s economy has boomed since the fall of communism? In fact, the Czech Republic has been described as one of Europe’s most flourishing economies, with the lowest unemployment rate in the EU, making this a great destination in which to explore the important links between politics and economics.

There are some fantastic educational activities for you and your group to enjoy that will give your students the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of business models and practices, the power of marketing and the essentials of finance and human resources.

Experiencing this first-hand will not only help your students to better understand the theory taught in the classroom, but it will also provide them with tangible experiences that they’ll be able to recall during exams.

A business school trip will encourage your students to learn in dynamic and stimulating learning environments outside of the classroom, helping to boost their understanding of the subject and perhaps even inspire future career ambitions.

Why arrange a business studies school trip?

Explore important financial centres.

You’ll be able to choose from a great range of destinations for your trip, including some of the world’s most important financial centres, such as Frankfurt, New York and Tokyo.

Frankfurt is home to both the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank and is considered the financial capital of the Eurozone. As such, it should be no surprise that so many of the world’s top companies have their European headquarters based in the city. It is also home to one of the world’s largest stock exchanges.

Meanwhile, New York is considered the finance capital of the world and is home to Wall Street. Many Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies have based themselves in the city, as have many of the world’s biggest banks, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan.

Or you could head to Tokyo, the capital of the world’s third-largest economy and another important financial centre. Many of the world’s largest investment banks are based in the city. A highlight of your trip to Japan will be the Tokyo Stock Exchange, where your business studies students can take part in a game where they simulate trading stocks!

Learn more about brands

If you’re looking for educational tours where your students can learn more about the development of brands, the importance of innovation, research and development or even global marketing strategies, then we’ve got plenty of options for you.

You could choose to visit Paris, where you can visit a variety of businesses, from a local bakery to Charles de Gaulle Airport.

You could even pop over to Europe’s biggest theme park, Disneyland® Paris to enjoy a specialist workshop and learn more about the Disney brand and how it’s marketed. Pupils will also learn about the corporate structure and the various roles within the organisation.

Or in Barcelona, you can visit a variety of well-known brands, from wineries and breweries to newspapers and even footballing behemoth FC Barcelona!

Enjoy the trip as much as your students

Originally founded by former teachers, and with many former teachers still among us, we understand the value of business studies school trips and how to make them successful.

Your trip will be completely tailor-made, to ensure that it meets your specific requirements and learning objectives. And we’ll be on hand throughout the process to answer any questions you have.

In fact, we’ll be with you every step of the way, from now until you return home at the end of your trip. While abroad, you’ll be able to reach us with just one phone call, at any time of the day or night. And, with this comprehensive level of support while you’re away, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy experiencing business studies as much as your students.

King’s College, The British School of Panama

Thank you so much for the incredible experience, we all had an amazing time. I can't stress enough how great Katsumi was as a guide, he built a great relationship with the students and helped us feel safe and engaged throughout. Nishant was also very good when we had him for Kesenumma and he again built good relationships with the kids and his knowledge was great. Thanks again and look forward to working together again down the line!

Harris Girls' Academy

The students got the chance to experience the environment of a corporate office which gave them an idea of what working life might be like in the future. The workshops and talk by the guest speaker gave the students insights into start-up businesses and ways in which they can seek support to be entrepreneurs. The students felt really inspired by the talk given by the young entrepreneur as having a young person speak to them about success helped the students to understand that they can have confidence in themselves and their futures. The students enjoyed the workshop where they were given the opportunity to work together and share creative thoughts about start-up ideas. Thank you for organising a really insightful, educational and fun-filled trip for our students. They really enjoyed it!

I just wanted to thank you for putting together such a great trip for our students. The feedback from the staff was excellent and they were particularly impressed by the communication in the build-up to the trip, along with the local knowledge of the guide, the range of activities, and the clear contingency planning when the weather didn't cooperate. I am very keen that we repeat this trip next year…

Oak Hill School

Health & safety were well taken care of. None of the travellers got sick because of food on the trip, and an effort was always made to ensure the cleanest available restroom. We were always advised to wear seatbelts on the bus when on the highway. The food in Shanghai was a good variety of both dishes and cuisine, and I really appreciated how much effort Caroline put into making sure our 素菜宝宝 had enough to eat.

Student at Harris Girls' Academy

I really enjoyed every part of The Learning Adventure as it helped me learn a lot of new interesting things and gave me an insight into business and how to make a start in it, particularly a start- up. Beginning with a short tour around Greater London informed our team about the historical context of the amazing business district and how it all started, and later on I found the start-up activity absorbing and interactive while the entrepreneur who talked to us about such things like career options helped a lot. Our guide was friendly and everything went smoothly. Thank you so much The Learning Adventure!

Godolphin and Latymer

We enjoyed all the activities immensely, there was a huge range. The school we visited this time was brilliant, so well organised. The guides really tried hard to reference the aims of the trip. Peter was exceptional, he was kind and was very concerned that everyone was well and enjoying themselves. He was also very informative. The geography lecturer was exceptional and fitted the brief 110%!

When you are a high school or college student, you generally have huge batches of free time. There's no better way to spend them than becoming a student entrepreneur...

In the past decade, the world has seen many incredible businesses being started by college students (Facebook, just to name one).

Is it Possible to Start a Business While Being a Student?

The internet has removed many barriers that once prevented students from starting businesses. These days, there are no legal, financial, or knowledge restrictions holding you back from launching a side hustle while in school.

School and university demand many of your hours, but if you stay organized and make the best use of your hours, you will find time to both study and run your startup.

Best 36 Business Ideas for Students

1) sell used books.

Sell Used Books

Difficulty : Low

Investment : Low

Description : You finished your academic year, congratulations! Now check your desk… you have a pile of used books, right? In many cases, they end up in your house’s trash bins. However, there’s something better to do with them: sell them to younger students at a cheaper price than what a new copy is.

You'll probably, at least, make enough money to purchase the books needed for your next semester. The best of this idea is that it doesn’t require either any investment or much time.

Resources : Here’s an article on the 6 best places to re-sell old books and some tips on how to do it.

2) Flip Websites

Difficulty : Medium

Investment : High

Description : You buy websites that are exiting for a low price, grow them in 6 months to 2 years, and sell them at a much higher price for a profit. There are people who work full-time on this and make millions per year with their sites.

The key here is to buy a high-quality website at a low price. There’s a ton of information on what you should consider and check when doing it. At the same time, there are all kinds of free digital marketing courses that you will find useful if growing one of these websites.

Resources : Flippa , Empire Flippers, and Micro Acquire are three website marketplaces. Besides that, you should check out this article on how to find, evaluate and buy websites , as well as this review we've written about Micro Acquisitions course , which goes all about buying, growing, and selling sites.

3) Re-Selling

Investment : Medium

Description : There’s an ethical unresolved issue around re-selling sneakers, tickets, or whatever, but I’ve personally seen many people make loads of money buying items at a low price and selling them at a higher one. Re-selling works best with limited items (such as the mentioned tickets and some exclusive sneakers), as those who haven’t been able to purchase them are willing to pay more than their original price to have them once the item is out of stock.

The key when re-selling is understanding the market and anticipating which items will people be more willing to pay for once they run out. Note that it can be pretty risky; I know of a guy who bought 10 tickets for a concert and couldn’t re-sell them. He ended up inviting all of his friends for free with a huge loss.

Resources : This is a really inspirational article on how to re-sell sneakers and make a profit.

4) Writing Services

Description : Start a website that offers all kinds of writing services to students or businesses. It could be anything from sales & marketing copy, SEO content, essay writing, academic papers, or even simple proofreading.

There are already many trustworthy services online, and before starting out your own writing service, it is a good idea to work as a professional essay writer for a top website. After you have gained some valuable experience doing this, you can move on to creating your own essay-writing service. You could charge per hour or project.

+1 if the website invites other fellow students to offer such writing services and you charge a fee ;)

Resources : This article will help you decide whether you should or should not start freelance writing. If yes, make sure to check this one, which teaches you how to do it.

5) Play Cupid

#5 business idea for students

Description : Set up a website or an app, exclusively for your college campus or local area, to let the singles meet. This will be much appreciated by the community and, with a small fee, the app could kick-off and be the Tinder of your campus or neighbourhood.

The app could, instead, be focused around networking. People could use it to meet other people and make new friends.

Alternatively, the app could also be focused around professional networking.

These rewards could be in the form of vouchers, coupons, or deals for any local service. For the sponsors, this would be a worthwhile advertisement option among the clientele too.

Similar apps could be designed for fitness, gym attendance, and other activities too.

This would work as a credible source rather than just word of mouth. There could also be options added to include listings and discussion forums. You can monetize this through advertising.

Resources : WPBeginner has a long article on how to build a review site using WordPress, which would probably be the cheapest and fastest way to do it.

11) Swap Website

Description : Swap websites are used to swap, sell, and borrow goods and services. For example, if a person needs something but only for a single use, it is best to rent it out rather than buy one.

Call it a new age barter system; especially on campus, there would be a lot of demand for this. Start this locally and then expand it later. There are loads to borrow and exchange from academic services, bikes, books, and even clothes. You can monetize it through advertising.

Businesses may not be really willing to offer advanced translation work to students, but they might be if it is basic and unimportant translations.

You could start by translating lectures, books, and articles for professors. There’s a ton of high-quality content in other languages - professors might want to share it with their students but they can’t as it isn’t in the student’s native language. That’s where you can help and charge per word translated.

Resources : Here’s a whole content site dedicated to the business of translation.

20) Photography Services

Description : If you love taking photographs, you can take your hobby and talent into a photography freelancing business. Both students and local businesses may need your services whether because they want to update their Tinder profiles or because they are looking to promote their recently-launched products.

Resources : Make sure to check this guide from Bplans on how to start a successful photography business.

The platform could charge a fee to either the photographer or the customer. On the side, it could also work hand in hand with a photography club giving more chances and connections to both sellers and buyers by offering more exposure.

Resources : Here’s a no-code template to build such an app.

22) Food Delivery Services

#22 business ideas for students at home

Description : Create a platform to deliver quick eatables, like sandwiches and smoothies, made by local businesses. Start by targeting firms with employees in younger age groups, who often go out to grab a meal during lunch breaks. This is a gold mine, with food deliveries for simple items that don't break their wallet, the business would be exponential. With options to schedule deliveries made earlier to arrive at lunchtime, this could actually be a problem solver for the firms.

Take a step further and make these homemade too. This way, it is not necessary to rely on multiple third-party services. The food will be authentic, tasty, and have a personal touch to the service.

Resources : Steven Long was the founder of Chowdy, a Toronto-based food delivery startup making $110k/month which had to shut down due to some legal issues. Ali Jiwani is the founder of MealSurfers, a Canadian food startup that made an exit when it was making $7k/month. Make sure to check those two stories and learn from both the wins and mistakes of each.

23) Deliver Food Hampers

#23 startup business ideas for college students

This will have the personal touch and love of a package coming from home itself. You could monetize it by taking a shipping fee.

Resources : Entrepreneur.com has a complete article about food hamper businesses. You should check it out!

The idea is to make a visual representation of any lectures and offer them to tutors and students. It would make studying so much better and more straightforward. You could monetize it by pricing every video or through a monthly subscription.

There are some people who are really great at taking lecture notes, being able to summarize the information in a nice-looking and concise way. If you are that kind of person, you should consider re-selling your notes to other students. You could sell them independently per class or in packages of all the notes related to one exam or to one semester.

Resources : Make sure to check this well-known book , in which Sönke Ahrens shares his unique technique to take smart notes that are easy to study and learn from.

#27 business plan ideas for students

Description : Where there are students, there are tutors. If you stand out in one subject, you can probably teach it to someone else who struggles to understand it. A common trouble-maker subject is Maths, but note that there are many math tutors as well.

Schools and professors tend to be helpful with students starting their tutor businesses. Some schools even have a database of tutor students, so make sure to check if there is one in your school. The monetization model would be per hour; you can charge anything between $10-$100, depending on the subject, the concepts taught (how advanced they are), etc.

The newsletter could be sent as emails rather than printed versions or both. As a third party, a student can even make a deal with the college to create brand awareness among potential students using the letter. It could be used for promotional purposes, branding, and lead generations outside the campus too.

Resources : Here’s an article on 7 tips to create a school newsletter.

31) Campus Podcast

#31 ideas for college students

The equipment needed is pretty cheap, with the possibility of recording even with your phone. As for monetization, it could be done through sponsorships from local businesses or premium content for those who love the podcast.

The initial investment costs are super low, as you can ask the business owner to supply you with the needed tools. As for monetization, most bookkeepers charge per hour and the amount depends on the complexity of the tasks ($30-$100 or more).

34) Jewelry Business

You will then need to practice a lot until you start getting great results. Profit margins can be really high when you achieve a nice looking product.

There’s a ton of competition in the jewelry space so you will have to identify a niche. Social media (particularly influencers) are among the most usual strategies carried out by this kind of businesses.

There are two main ways to monetize this. The first would be to prepare the goods based on requests from customers. The second could be to produce 100 cookies, rent a bike, and wander around the campus and neighborhood looking for hungry people. The chosen price for the cookies would be cheaper than if it’s a requested job.

How Can a Student Start a Business?

Or in other words, how do you become a student entrepreneur?

The list of business plan ideas for college students mentioned above is nonsense if you don’t now take action toward the chosen business.

If you are a Business student, you probably have an idea of what are the steps that involve setting up and launching a business. However, all kinds of students read this article, so here are some common steps that entrepreneurs carry out:

1) Decide on the idea

All of the business ideas for college students on the list are really interesting ways of making money, but you definitely can’t work on them all.

To decide which to focus on, make sure to think about what you enjoy doing in your free time, what you excel in, and what would you be willing to keep doing even if it doesn’t bring money (or it means negative numbers). We have compiled a list of both online business ideas and offline business ideas so you can pick the one that best suit your needs and skills. We hope we came up with some innovative startup business ideas for students that you would have never imagined.

Make sure to also consider your initial investment. Some featured in the list are business ideas for college students without investment or little resources, while some others will require a few hundred or thousands to start.

Note that some of the above are business ideas for students in university (or would work better with them) and others are business ideas for students in school (those that don’t require much money and getting physically involved).

2) Decide on a niche

Nowadays, there are businesses of all sizes and shapes. Building one has become so easy that the internet is full of websites, millions of videos are uploaded to Youtube every second, and thousands of LLCs are formed every day.

This means that there’s a lot of competition in any industry. The best solution for students who don’t have enough resources to invest in research and development and build a unique product or don’t have the capital required to set up a huge factory and win over competitors through economies of scale (= low pricing), is to focus on a niche.

A common niche could be to geographically limit the business so that you just focus on people within your neighborhood or your college campus. Another could be to focus on people with certain interests and likes.

3) Choose a name and a brand style

Here’s a detailed article on how to choose a name for your startup. The key is to brainstorm many, evaluate each option, and ask for feedback from your partners.

As for branding, here’s another article on how to build the brand of a business. There are free tools to do it. Don’t spend much money/time on it, at least at the beginning.

4) Launch the business

It’s now time to push the LIVE button for your business.

This needs to happen as fast as possible so that you quickly validate whether it is worth it to keep pushing towards that business idea or it’s better to move to a new one from the above list of entrepreneurship ideas for students.

There’s a common issue entrepreneurs face when launching new startups that’s called “ paralysis by analysis ”. They keep improving the product, adding features, changing the design, etc, and spend months and months without launching it.

This is exactly what you need to avoid, especially if this is your first business. 90% of startups fail (I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this), so you need to launch fast, validate early, and move to another business if it didn’t work.

5) Market your business

You pushed the LIVE button and you didn't get any sales, right?

The “build it and they will come” phrase is a completely unreal myth . It will take you blood, sweat, and tears to get your first clients.

Do some advertising, go outside your home and deliver leaflets (there actually are some unique business ideas for students at home above, in case you’re too lazy), knock on your neighbor’s doors, send cold messages to potential customers that you found on Facebook groups, etc.

6) Make sure your customer is happy

Many of the college business ideas tend to market themselves by word of mouth and referrals. That is why it’s essential to make sure that each of your clients is happy with the results.

Interact with your customers, ask them what they think you could do better next time, provide them with a discount if any parts of the job were done incorrectly… there are so many ways to make your client happy, even if the price of the service is high or the quality of the work wasn’t the best.

If the business is going well, you will soon find yourself with many tasks under your belt and little time to work on them, along with studies and extracurricular activities.

That’s when you might start considering hiring your first employee. In order to avoid the risks of going into negative numbers during a bad month, you can work on a commission-based wage.

In this stage, the selection of new team members is essential. Remember that word of mouth can be a key way of promotion and marketing. If you hire someone who has zero knowledge of the tasks they are required for, delivers low-quality work, or mistreats clients, you will soon find yourself ceasing operations.

Now It’s Your Turn!

There is no direct and simple answer to the question of how to start a business in college.

As smooth as the above startup ideas for students may sound, they will all inevitably require a lot of dedication and perseverance.

There is an abundance of resources at your fingertips, from valuable classes to school technologies, and access to professors. So make use of them in the best way possible, and if the idea still doesn’t seem feasible, lay the groundwork for it.

You would be getting practical knowledge and work experience before finishing the course. Even if it fails. Remember that college is the time to blossom and experiment, and it is only the beginning of your life journey.

Here are some of the best businesses: flip websites, re-sell sneakers or tickets, baby or pet sitting, deliver writing, design or development services, start a blog, sell your class notes, become a tutor, organize others’ trips, organize parties, and create a campus newsletter or podcast.

What Kind Of Business Can a Student Start?

Students can start all kinds of businesses, but it’s really common that they start a service-based one, such as house cleaning, pool cleaning, food delivery, content writing, content transcription, graphic design, and website development, among others.

First, decide your business idea and choose the segment of the market that you’ll be serving. Then, choose a business name and design your business’ brand. Once it is launched, market your business in your neighborhood or campus. Finally, hire employees and scale it!

WARM-UP & VIDEO

The lesson starts with a warm-up activity. Students answer a few general questions and talk about business trips. Then, they look at different activities (e.g. delivering or taking professional training, networking with other professionals, trying local food , etc.) and discuss which things they would find interesting to do on a business trip. After that, students move on to a video. First, they watch the video and say why it was made. Then, they work with vocabulary (e.g. upgrade the room, grab a book, head to a pool, etc.). Students read sentences and choose the correct words . They watch the video again and check their answers. There is also a list of concept-checking questions for teachers to make sure students understand the key vocabulary.

ACTIVITIES TO TALK ABOUT BUSINESS TRIPS

In this part of the lesson, students practise the vocabulary and talk about business trips more. First, they discuss the tips from the video and add two or three tips of their own. Then, they complete the sentences with their ideas and add details. After that, students have a discussion and talk about business trips, what is important when you have one, and whether they are more stressful than regular work. As a final activity, students do a role play . They read the information about their business trip (e.g. hotel location and facilities, schedule, etc.) and decide how they will spend their free time together.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the use of the vocabulary to talk about business trips while describing pictures and brainstorming ideas. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

Table of Contents

Introduction

The Business Trip ESL Lesson Plan is designed to equip students with the language skills and cultural understanding necessary for successful business trips. In today’s global economy, professionals often need to travel for work, and being able to communicate effectively in English during these trips is essential. This lesson plan will focus on practical vocabulary, expressions, and scenarios commonly encountered during business travels, helping students feel more confident and prepared in a professional setting. With this lesson plan, students will gain valuable language skills that can be directly applied to real-world situations, making it an essential topic for ESL learning.

Vocabulary Building

Contextual usage.

1. We need to finalize the itinerary for the upcoming business trip before we book the flights. 2. The company covers accommodation expenses for employees traveling on official business. 3. Don’t forget to submit your expense report along with all supporting receipts by the end of this week. 4. The client meeting has been rescheduled to next Tuesday at 10 AM. 5. Sarah will be giving a presentation on our latest project during the conference next month.

ESL Warm-up Activity

To kick off the lesson on business trips, start with a roleplay activity where students are divided into pairs and given specific business travel scenarios. For example, one student can act as a business traveler arriving at an airport, facing language barriers or transportation issues, while the other plays the role of a helpful local or service provider. This will encourage students to use vocabulary related to travel, communication, and problem-solving in a practical context. It sets the tone for the lesson by immersing students in realistic situations they may encounter during business trips.

Main ESL Lesson Activities

Vocabulary activity: travel scenarios.

Divide the class into groups of three or four. Provide each group with a set of travel scenarios related to business trips. Instruct the students to discuss and identify relevant vocabulary words and expressions associated with each situation. Encourage them to create dialogues using the vocabulary they have learned, simulating real-world conversations during business travels. Afterward, each group can present their dialogues, allowing for peer feedback and further discussion.

Roleplay Exercise: Business Meeting Simulation

Pair up the students and assign roles such as company representatives, clients, or service providers. Provide each pair with a scenario involving a business meeting during a trip. Students will engage in roleplay, practicing conversational English and professional etiquette in a simulated business setting. This activity offers an opportunity for students to apply their language skills in context while also developing confidence in using English for business interactions.

Listening Comprehension: Trip Itinerary Details

Play an audio recording detailing a typical trip itinerary including flight details, accommodation arrangements, meeting schedules, and transportation information. After playing the recording once, have the students work in pairs to jot down important details they caught from listening. Following this, facilitate a class discussion where students share what they heard and compare notes with their peers.

Reading & Writing Task: Expense Report Analysis

Distribute sample expense reports from previous business trips to individual students. Ask them to analyze the reports and summarize key information such as total expenses incurred, breakdown of costs (e.g., transport, accommodation), and any reimbursement claims made by employees if applicable. This exercise encourages reading comprehension while enhancing analytical skills related to financial documentation commonly encountered during professional travels.

ESL Homework Assignment

For homework, students will be tasked with preparing a mock business trip itinerary. They are to research a destination and compile a detailed plan of their travel schedule, including flights, accommodation options, and potential meeting or event locations. Additionally, students should create an expense report for this trip based on estimated costs for transportation, lodging, meals, and any other associated expenses. This assignment reinforces the vocabulary and concepts covered in class while also fostering independent research skills related to business travel planning.

Key Points Summary

Throughout this lesson, students explored essential vocabulary and scenarios relevant to business trips, gaining a deeper understanding of communication and cultural aspects involved in professional travel. They engaged in practical activities such as roleplays, listening exercises, and reading comprehension tasks, preparing them for real-world situations they may encounter during business travels.

Reflection and Application

It’s important for students to reflect on how the language skills learned in this lesson can be applied to their overall language development. Understanding the nuances of communication in professional settings not only improves their ability to navigate business trips effectively but also enhances their overall English proficiency. By mastering the vocabulary and communication strategies vital for successful business interactions, students can elevate their language skills for both personal and professional growth.

Why this topic is great for ESL learning

The Business Trip ESL Lesson Plan offers practical and relevant content for English language learners who have an interest in or need for business-related communication skills. As English continues to be the global language of business, equipping students with the language and cultural knowledge necessary for successful business trips is crucial. This lesson plan not only enhances students’ professional communication abilities but also provides them with valuable real-world skills that can be immediately applied in their careers. By engaging in scenarios, vocabulary building, and practical exercises related to business travel, students develop both linguistic proficiency and cultural awareness essential for professional settings.

The travel experience, March 27-29, was organized by Professor of Business Dr. Tekle Wanorie and School of Business graduate assistants Maggie McNeely and Sage Thelen.

"This trip is offered to allow students to find experiences and build knowledge on the job opportunities that are open to them as business majors,” Thelen said. “Students are able to learn about what life could be like in a big city through young professional panelists and visiting work sites to get hands-on learning opportunities."

Kayla Mitchell, a senior business management major from Nodaway, Iowa, enjoyed the opportunity to learn about a career in business by visiting the city and meeting individuals with similar professional goals.

“I chose to attend this trip in hopes of networking with people my age, as well as other business students that could help to expand my options for the future,” Mitchell said.

During their time in Minneapolis, the group attended a question-answer panel with members of the Young Professionals of Minneapolis, a professional development organization for young individuals in business, and heard from recent college graduates about their experiences in the industry. The group also spent an evening networking with the Young Professionals of Minneapolis to ask questions about job opportunities and meet people in the industry.

“After listening to the young professionals panel, I felt excited to enter into the job field,” McNeely said. “Hearing about their job search experiences and how their journeys led them to where they are today was truly inspiring.”

Northwest business students and faculty toured the University Enterprise Laboratories in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Additionally, Northwest students toured the University Enterprise Laboratories in St. Paul, Minnesota, a laboratory space for technology, medical and science companies. They listened to business professionals discuss their research processes and their careers in the business field.

“My major takeaways from the trip were learning about the different career paths available in a larger city like Minneapolis and connecting with young professionals in the field,” Haley Halsey, a junior marketing major from Odessa, Missouri, said. “It was eye-opening to see the opportunities and possibilities that exist in major cities.”

Student spotlight: USF junior Kande DaCosta adopts ‘calming energy’ from Italian study abroad trip

  • Taylor Tegarden
  • April 30, 2024

Business News , Spotlights

Before she even set foot on campus, finance major Kande DaCosta binge-watched “Day in the Life” videos on YouTube to get a sense of college life on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus.

It didn’t take long for her to stumble upon references to the USF World Education Abroad program . And while DaCosta was already moving to the U.S. from her native St. Andrew parish in Jamaica to “study abroad,” traveling and experiencing college life in other countries intrigued her.

So much so that during her orientation, DaCosta made sure to ask USF World staff about the opportunities that had piqued her love of adventure in those online videos. She even met with advisors to consider the best location and timing, deciding that studying abroad as a third-year student made the most sense.

In her first two years at the Muma College of Business, DaCosta was involved in student life and held elected leadership roles in both Student Government and the Black Student Association , while working as a student assistant in the dean's office at the Kate Tiedemann School of Business and Finance .

At the beginning of her junior year, DaCosta packed her bags and headed to her new temporary home in Florence, Italy, fulfilling a goal she mapped out as a freshman.

DaCosta said studying abroad in Florence, known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, brought a relaxed and calming energy to her daily routine.

In Florida, DaCosta’s day is consumed with going to the gym, attending classes, work, student organization meetings, and school activities. In Italy, her focus switched to expanding her education and exploring the city through traveling and sightseeing.

She noticed cultural differences in the classroom, as well.

“School in Italy was more focused on real-life situations,” said DaCosta. “In the U.S. we have quizzes, papers, exams, and assignments, but in Italy the curriculum and the professors taught us how to apply our knowledge to our future careers."

Kande DaCosta

After enjoying her semester abroad, returning to the U.S. meant returning to her busy life at USF. However, DaCosta brought some of her Italian lifestyle back with her. She has learned to add a little more leisure into her daily life and focus on how her studies will be applied in her future career.

“Italians value their leisure time,” said DaCosta. “A typical day in Italy consisted of a three-hour class that I attended weekly, followed by some sightseeing, lunch at a café, and then some relaxation time before heading to dinner with my friends.”

She learned to take things a little slower in her life at home.

Angelica Foley

“Cross cultural learning can be a transformative experience,” said Angelica Foley, an academic and HR services administrator on the USF St. Petersburg campus who has supervised DaCosta for three years. “I am so proud that Kande got to experience this while studying abroad.”

DaCosta is currently finishing her undergraduate degree in finance with an expected graduation in May of 2025.

“Math was just always it for me,” said DaCosta. “Even as a child in Jamaica math was always my favorite subject.”

After taking an accounting course in high school, DaCosta realized that while she was good at the subject, she didn’t enjoy the work. That's why finance appealed to her.

She is looking forward to helping people find financial freedom through a career in wealth management and financial advising.

Students get a ‘Jumpstart’ on their careers in Dallas

Uc blue ash students experience transformative travel on their path to lindner.

headshot of Haley Fite

Students from Carl H. Lindner College of Business’ Jumpstart program — a pipeline between UC Blue Ash and the business college that provides students with additional support toward transitioning into a bachelor’s degree program — experienced a whirlwind visit to Dallas during spring break 2024.

The group of 12 students balanced a packed schedule of professional development and networking with cultural and tourist experiences. Sponsored by Deloitte, students connected with Lindner alumni and employer partners throughout the four-day trip.

Arun Murthy, BBA '95, (center) offered students advice on actions they can take now that will create positive impact for their futures.

Day one: Diving right in

Day one brought a visit to the Charles Schwab corporate campus where students met with Lindner alumnus  Arun Murthy , BBA ’95.

After a tour of the campus, students engaged in a Q&A session with Murthy to gain his insights on what they should be doing right now to prepare them for the next phase of their educational and career journeys.

Murthy encouraged the young professionals to “keep your eyes open” and pay attention to what piques their interest. But Murthy’s greatest advice to students was to get involved and be open to meeting and getting to know new people.

After finishing their day with a visit to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum for reflection and remembrance, and an evening in the Discovery District of Dallas for dinner and exploration, students looked to a second day packed with adventure.

Day two: A non-stop adventure

I think one of the reasons that I probably succeeded in this type of environment was my ability to connect and the relationships that I made with the people I interviewed with. It wasn't just transactional. It's very relational in nature.

Kasey Beiting Campus recruiting specialist, Deloitte

Day two’s itinerary featured visits to the American Airlines corporate campus, Deloitte University and AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, to learn about sales and sports marketing.

First on the list: American Airlines.

Led by Scott Mallory, a campus recruiter for the company, students toured the expansive headquarters asking questions along the way about everything from employee benefits to navigating career changes.

“One of the most significant lessons I learned was the unpredictability of your professional career,” said Manuel Chacon Molina, who is interested in studying international business upon transferring to Lindner. “Observing individuals like Scott Mallory at American Airlines, who began in human resources and progressed across various departments, has reinforced the notion that while academic foundations are crucial, practical experience is fundamental for professional growth.”

Jumpstart students enjoyed their tour of the American Airlines' corporate headquarters.

For Abybatou Diop, a first-year  Jumpstart  student interested in supply chains and international business, the experience was transformative.

“The American Airlines company tour profoundly changed my perspective on the business world, igniting a passion within me," Diop said. "This experience was life-altering, pushing me to think beyond my previous limits. I am forever grateful for the inspiration it has given.”

Still in awe from their first tour of the day, students had even more in store as they headed to Deloitte University, the training grounds for all Deloitte employees.

Students were welcomed by a committee of Deloitte representatives, including several from Cincinnati who made the trip to Dallas to connect with the Jumpstart students.

Jeff Suttle, director, client relations, led students on a facility tour and provided an overview of the purpose of Deloitte University and how it helps the organization to continuously grow and invest in its employees.

Students enjoyed lunch alongside company representatives Jim Sowar, managing partner, Kasey Beiting, campus recruiting specialist, and Zach Wall, audit senior manager. Afterward, Sowar, Beiting and Wall engaged with students in a more formalized Q&A session, providing advice for how to prepare for their future careers, identifying their ideal career path and challenges they may face along their journey.

“In the first couple of years, I wasn't sure what my path to take, but it was really diving in and owning the fact that, if I'm going to be successful, I'm going to have to work hard, I'm going have to put my head down at times that I might not want to,” Wall told students. “But ultimately, that's the way to meeting that goal on that path.”

Deloitte representatives Kasey Beiting (left), campus recruiting specialist, Zach Wall (center), audit senior manager, and Jim Sower (right), managing partner, engaged in a Q&A session with students at Deloitte University.

As an active leader in the campus recruitment process for Deloitte, Beiting was able to offer the students an insider’s point of view on how to approach the interview process.

“I think one of the reasons that I probably succeeded in this type of environment was my ability to connect and the relationships that I made with the people I interviewed with,” said Beiting. “It wasn't just transactional. It's very relational in nature.”

With nearly 40 years of experience in the tax industry, and more than 20 years with Deloitte, Sowar hammered home this point for students.

“Is this candidate going to be able to not only maintain relationships but grow relationships and create new relationships that will lead to new business?” Sowar said of what Deloitte is looking for in its employees. “And that gets into what kind of personal skills do you have? Can you carry out a conversation? Are you asking interesting questions? How do you interact with people in a group setting and so forth? We do notice those things, and I think they really stand up.”

The themes of leadership and relationships expressed by Wall, Beiting and Sowar resonated heavily with students as they thought about their own career trajectories.

“Deloitte's emphasis on nurturing leadership qualities and continuous improvement resonated deeply with me,” said Chacon Molina. “The immersive experience at Deloitte University, allied to a rigorous training program, helps individuals not just with job-specific skills but also with the mindset and capabilities to lead effectively.”

Students took in city views at the Reunion Tower Observation Deck.

Students’ attention then turned to a more light-hearted adventure: a tour of AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. But, before the fun began, the group stopped to connect with Bohn Crain, account executive with the AT&T Stadium sales team.

Crain’s energy and passion for his career path radiated over the students as they took in his message and holy grail advice: network, network, network.

Crain discussed his mission to meet one new person per day and encouraged students to take on the same challenge, as you never know where that connection may lead. Students were able to put this advice into immediate use as they connected with members of the Lindner Career Services team over dinner at Kitchen & Kocktails, a Black-owned business in the heart of Dallas.

Day three: Making connections

The final day of the trip allowed students to continue bonding with one another as they explored all Dallas has to offer, including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and the Reunion Tower Observation Deck. Through these experiences, students were able to form new bonds and identify new ways that they may support each other into the future, both personally and professionally.

“I thought Dallas was a great experience for the students. They were able to see what their futures could look like, the places that their degree could take them,” said Abbey Wulf, academic adviser to the Jumpstart program. “It was rewarding to see them engaging with different companies and asking them questions. I think they also bonded with one another over this experience and their time together. I personally hope that the bonds created during this trip remain. That they now have people they can lean on at UC Blue Ash and in Lindner once they transition and after graduation.”

Lasting impact and looking forward

The idea behind the Jumpstart program is to plant seeds and watch them grow. By encouraging our students to constantly show up and just do it, no matter how hard it is — a course, a test, a project — we help to push them further so they can thrive.

Arielle Betts Program coordinator, Office of Inclusive Excellence

Top of mind for both students and employers throughout the company visits: diversity, a topic near and dear to many Jumpstart participants’ experiences.

“The most important thing that I learned from our experience in Dallas was how much businesses are in search of diversity and how important it is for them to have as much diversity as possible. Diversity can help them reach their highest peak of success,” said marketing major Cris Mejia-Sanchez.

According to Arielle Betts , the program coordinator behind Jumpstart from Lindner’s Office of Inclusive Excellence , this experience represents another cornerstone of the foundation of the program and what she hopes to achieve with it.

“The idea behind the Jumpstart program is to plant seeds and watch them grow," Betts said. "By encouraging our students to constantly show up and just do it, no matter how hard it is — a course, a test, a project — we help to push them further so they can thrive.”

London DSB Study Trip 2024

In April, the HEC UK Office organised the 2nd edition of the Learning Expedition to London for Master in Data Science for Business X-HEC (DSB) students. During 3 intensive days, the students had the opportunity to do company visits, meet with data scientists and network with HEC alumni. This Learning Expedition provided an exclusive chance for students to immerse themselves in the world of data science and its practical applications in business.

HEC Paris UK Office - Master DSB London study trip

“We were delighted d to welcome the 2nd cohort of DSB students in the HEC UK House. Those study trips for our students are a key component of the HEC UK office missions, part of the International Affairs Department of HEC Paris. We are looking forward to welcoming these students again as young professionals in London next year and seeing them join their vibrant alumni community in London.”

Laura Saint-Lo, Associate Director of HEC in the UK

One of the highlights of the trip was a series of meetings with data scientists who are currently working in various industries. These professionals shared their experiences and insights with the students, offering valuable advice on how to succeed in the field of data science. The students could ask questions and actively participate in discussions with these experts, leading to a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with a career in data science.

NEW YORK – Borrowers with some types of federal student loans have until today to consolidate their loans to qualify for full student loan cancellation or credit toward cancellation. The Education Department is expected to conduct a one-time adjustment in the summer but borrowers who want to be considered for the adjustment have to submit a request to consolidate their loans by Tuesday.

This one-time adjustment is meant to show a more accurate payment count for student loan borrowers.

Here's what you need to know:

WHICH TYPES OF LOANS NEED TO BE CONSOLIDATED?

Borrowers with these types of loans must consolidate first to take advantage of this one-time adjustment:

— Commercially managed Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) loans

You can learn more about the one-time adjustment at studentaid.gov .

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.

Trump's hush money trial

April 22, 2024 - Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Matt Egan, Alicia Wallace and Chandelis Duster

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is 'determining next steps'

From CNN's Jillian Sykes

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology issued a statement Monday regarding tents on its campus.

"MIT officials are aware of the tents, and are determining next steps with a focus on ensuring campus is physically safe and fully functioning. MIT Police were on scene throughout the night and will continue to be present."

Robert Kraft says he is willing to support The Kraft Center at the university

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots and backer of Columbia University, on Monday said he is still willing to support The Kraft Center at the school that supports Jewish students, calling it “a haven of safety.”

Kraft, an alumnus of the university, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that he loves the school and “we have to have accountability.”

“There are both professors and students within the university who say things that I think cross the line and there should be accountability. I believe in free speech. Say whatever you want but pay the consequences. And don't have your face covered. I don't think that should be allowed,” he said.

“I can’t believe in New York City at Columbia University Jewish students are afraid to go to classes in the United States of America in 2024. It’s amazing to me and horrible,” Kraft also said.

Asked where he drew the line at Columbia University regarding both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests and what he finds objectionable, he said “there is a lack of education on the situation” happening in the Middle East.

“I’m concerned about America and what’s going on in this country. And to keep it open and free for all people of all backgrounds to do as they wish,” he said.

Asked if he has confidence in Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik, he said he thinks she is “very well intentioned” and said “we have to look at what goes on with faculty.”

Columbia faculty stage walk-out in solidarity with students

From CNN's John Towfighi

Hundreds of people gathered on Low Plaza Monday afternoon as Columbia University faculty delivered speeches in support of the student protesters who were suspended and arrested Thursday.

Faculty who spoke denounced university president Minouche Shafik’s decision to authorize the New York Police Department to remove protesters from campus and demanded all legal and disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from students' records.

Faculty held signs that read, “Hands off our students,” and “End student suspensions now.” Some faculty donned their academic regalia and wore sashes that read, “We support students.”

Speeches were met with cheers and claps from the crowd, as well as chants for Shafik to resign.

Christopher Brown, a professor of history, said, “I’m here because I am so concerned about what is happening at this university, with where we are now and with where we are going. Thursday April 18, 2024, will be remembered as a shameful day in Columbia history.”

“The president’s decision to send riot police to pick up peaceful protesters on our campus was unprecedented, unjustified, disproportionate, divisive and dangerous,” Brown said.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was among the protesters arrested Thursday , posted on X that while she’s glad to see faculty demonstrate in solidarity with students, she wants the protests to focus on Gaza.

"On Thursday, Columbia arrested and suspended its students who were peacefully protesting and have now ignited a nationwide Gaza Solidarity movement. This is more than the students hoped for and I am glad to see this type of solidarity. But to be clear, this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that," Omar wrote.

NYC Mayor condemns "vile" and "disgusting" rhetoric at college campuses

From CNN's Alicia Wallace

New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday condemned “vile” and “disgusting” rhetoric being used at campuses such as Columbia University, where students are holding protests over the Israel-Hamas War.

Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he supports First Amendment rights but said law enforcement officials are on the ready if any of that speech goes too far or if there’s an imminent threat to people or property.

"That is one of the fundamental rights we hold dear as Americans: The right to protest," Adams said on CNN's "The Lead." "What we have seen playing out on many of our college campuses, and particularly Columbia University, is hate. We’re seeing vile language being used."

Adams noted that he can feel the "duality of this moment" and how the events of the past six months are weighing heavily on Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers. He added that the police escorts of Jewish students through campus were reminiscent of the Army soldiers who escorted nine Black students into a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, nearly 67 years ago.

"There is no place for hate in this city," he said.

New York Police Department officers have a “large presence” surrounding Columbia but have remained off the campus grounds at the request of the school’s administration, NYPD deputy commissioners said earlier on Monday.

Adams told Tapper that the NYPD’s commissioner of legal matter is monitoring the protests for any speech that violates law. Additionally, police officers will take "appropriate action" and go on private property if there’s an "imminent threat."

Protesters gather at The New School in New York City

From CNN's Elisabeth Buchwald

The New School students and pro-Palestinian supporters rally outside The New School University Center building, Monday, April 22, 2024, in New York.

Protesters have gathered at The New School, located near the Chelsea area of the New York City borough of Manhattan.

An encampment of four tents was set up in the lobby of the building that houses auditoriums, a cafeteria and a library. Roughly 75 students, and other people who have The New School IDs, gathered inside the building.

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not stop, we will not rest," was repeatedly chanted.

Outside the building, protesters from the school, as well as outsiders, joined in chants from the sidewalk.

There is a stark difference between the inside and outside of Columbia University's campus

From CNN's Ramishah Maruf

A pro-Palestine rally is held at the steps of Lowe Library on the grounds of Columbia University today in New York City.

There’s a stark difference between the inside of Columbia University's campus and the outside, where there are protesters gathered on the street.

The encampment is only open to those affiliated with campus. Only those with a Columbia ID can enter the campus gates. Inside the encampment, programs include teach-ins, poetry readings and film screenings. Some students are quietly finishing assignments, while others are painting posters.

Elsewhere around campus, students are eating and completing assignments. Many students take graduation pictures at this time, and some are in graduation gowns walking down Broadway. Risers are set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony.

Other students are holding large American flags underneath Butler Library.

Pro-Palestinian and Pro-israel face off outside of Columbia University which is occupied by Pro-Palestinian protesters in New York on April 22, 2024.

But the students can still hear the tension that is taking place yards away at the university gates. There is a gathering of pro-Palestinian protesters, who in the early afternoon were chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” There was a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters, who chanted back “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” A line of New York Police officers were monitoring the street.

What it's like inside the Columbia University encampment

Students protest in support of Palestinians on Columbia University campus, as protests continue inside and outside the university in New York City on April 22.

The inside of the encampment is quiet – most of the noise comes from protestors outside the gates of Columbia University's campus, who are chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long live the Intifada."

It was a sunny day on campus, and in one corner, students were painting posters. One person strummed a stringed instrument, and other students are reading books or on their laptops finishing assignments. Others have donated provisions, ranging from a table of snacks to hygiene products. There was also a pile of blankets.

“We’ve just been trying to keep students mobilized and keep pushing for divestment,” Dalia, a first-year student at Columbia College, told CNN. “We are a very mobilized student body and a very unified student body. Hundreds of people have been in and out of the encampment.”

CNN agreed not to publish her surname due to safety concerns.

She said the students at the campus “refuse to be complicit in the genocide, the apartheid, and the occupation of Palestine.”

There are strict community guidelines for the encampment. One rule says not to share names or details of anyone met in camp, and asking for permission before photographing or taking video.

The encampment is filled with dozens and dozens of tents, from students to neighboring Barnard College staff. Today’s encampment program included an Earth Day performance, poetry reading and a Dabka lesson, a traditional dance from the Arab region. Prior program events included dance performances from different cultures.

Democratic House members tour Columbia campus

Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Dan Goldman of New York and Kathy Manning of North Carolina, who are all Jewish, spoke at a news conference Monday after touring Columbia University’s campus.

"We saw it firsthand as we walked past the encampments on the university's main lawn full of protesters spewing incendiary antisemitic hate and vitriol. Many aren't even Columbia students I've been told. Their campaign of intimidation is sickening and shocking and as the White House said yesterday, ‘echoes the rhetoric of Hamas terrorists,'" Gottheimer said.

He also criticized Columbia University leadership, saying, “toothless combinations from administrators aren't going to stop the anarchy we’re seeing.”

“The only way to do it is with deeds, not words,” Gottheimer said. “Colleges have a legal obligation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide students, including Jews and Muslims, a school environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race color or national origin. Yet just feet from here, Jewish students are being verbally and even physically assaulted.”

Gottheimer continued, “To the administrators of Columbia and beyond, here are our demands: Stop the double talk and start acting now. Discipline harassers, restore civility on this campus, encourage peaceful constructive dialogue.”

He also gave a message for students: “While the leadership of Columbia may be failing you, we will not. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe and do everything in Washington we can to make sure that you feel welcome at this university or any university across the United States of America. And Columbia University, if they don't follow through, will pay the price.”

Goldman said he was "encouraged" the Columbia University president issued guidelines about additional security, calling it a "very important first step" and criticized what is happening on campus.

"That is unacceptable for a university, that is unacceptable for an academic institution. There is no question that everyone has a First Amendment right to speak out in this country and that must be preserved," Goldman said. "But a university and all universities have an obligation to maintain the safety and security of their students from all backgrounds."

Manning said university leadership should "do more to keep Jewish students safe and to re-establish an atmosphere in which all students can learn, study and participate safely in campus life."

"Columbia must also move forward with its promised efforts to teach its students and its faculty about the nature and history and dangers of antisemitism. It must ensure that Columbia professors are not encouraging and spreading antisemitism," Manning said.

"I call on the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice to work with the White House to ensure that all universities take steps necessary to keep Jewish students and faculty safe. I also call on Congress to enact legislation to implement the steps outlined in the US national strategy to counter antisemitism, to address the scourge of antisemitism which is a threat to the foundations of our democracy," she said.

President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism on campus

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during a visit to Prince William Forest Park to commemorate Earth Day in Triangle, Virginia, today.

President Joe Biden decried antisemitic protests around college campuses Monday and said his administration was working to combat anti-Jewish hatred.

"I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that," Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York.

"I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians," he said, without expanding upon what he meant.

Biden was speaking after an Earth Day event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia.

When asked whether Columbia's president should resign, Biden appeared to mishear: "I didn’t know that. I'll have to find out more," he said.
