Here is the latest from Disney we got in an email from them last month about a future booked cruise. “Beginning November 14, 2022, for sailings departing from the United States, Disney Cruise Line will no longer require Guests (regardless of vaccination status) to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to sailing. Disney Cruise Line continues to highly recommend that all Guests be fully vaccinated and encourages unvaccinated Guests to take a COVID-19 test two days prior to sailing.”

After logging into Disney plus to see the specials of buy 2 get 2….it says (with stitch) someone ate the page and that it doesn’t exist.

In our opinion, you should always book a Disney cruise with a third-party travel agency or site that provides a bonus or discount . The extra onboard credit or discount is effectively FREE money. The primary question is whether you prefer to handle your bookings directly ( self-service ), or work with a personal agent ( full-service ). They’re both good options and they both offer essentially similar savings: one via their own extra-discounted fares and the other via FREE onboard credit.

Booking a Disney Cruise With a Self-Service Site

Our pick for self-service booking is Undercover Tourist . We’ve recommended them for more than a decade as a fantastic source for tickets, but they also have impressive deals on Disney cruises. Last-Minute Restricted Stateroom Discounts

Restricted Guarantee fares, when offered, are a great way to save if you are flexible about your stateroom location and willing to book “last minute,” usually meaning 21-75 days prior to departure. The savings can be very large, but you won’t know your exact stateroom at booking time. Disney guarantees you will get at least the stateroom type specified, and you could get assigned a higher level. You usually will get an actual stateroom assignment about 14 days before embarkation, but it could be assigned as late as the embarkation day.

There are complicated rules for Restricted Guarantee bookings ; be sure to read them if you’re not already familiar with them. The “Restricted Guarantee” room categories are offered on select sailings. The categories are:

Guaranteed Inside Stateroom with Restrictions (category IGT) – Guarantees an inside or better stateroom (minimum category 11C)
Guaranteed Oceanview Stateroom with Restrictions (category OGT) – Guarantees an oceanview or better stateroom (minimum category 9D)
Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions (category VGT) – Guarantees a verandah or better stateroom (minimum category 7A)

If you are interested in booking one of these special restricted last-minute rates , we recommend either Small World Vacations or Undercover Tourist . These staterooms often sell out fast, so if you see one you like, snag it quickly.
Small World Vacations is a full service agency, offering a personal travel agent you can contact by email or direct phone number. It costs you nothing to use them, PLUS their FREE onboard credit offer applies to these special fares (the total cruise fare for the stateroom must be at least $1000 to get their onboard credit).
Undercover Tourist is a self-service booking site similar to Expedia or Priceline, but with years of focus on the Disney travel market. They offer the special rates mentioned above PLUS they add their own discounts.

Important details you need to know about Restricted Guarantee fares:

Can be combined with the Small World Vacations onboard credit offer as well as Undercover Tourist’s own bonus discounts.
Cannot be combined with any other Disney discount or promotional offers.
The specific stateroom is assigned by Disney, generally within a week of cruise departure. You cannot select a stateroom number or make special requests as to stateroom location.
If you book two or more Restricted Guarantee staterooms, there is no way to ensure that they are near each other, or even on the same deck. Disney will put the rooms as close together as they can, but sometimes they just don’t have any rooms left that are near each other.
Applies to new bookings only. Existing reservations cannot be modified to these new categories.
Full payment is due at time of booking. Booking holds are not permitted.
Reservation is non-refundable . (This only applies to situations where you cancel the cruise. If Disney cancels the cruise, for example because of pandemic restrictions, you will get a refund.)
Reservation and applied payment are non-transferable .
Full legal names and birthdates for all stateroom occupants are required at time of booking.
Name changes after booking are not allowed .
Sail date, stateroom category and cruise itinerary changes are not allowed .
You can book a maximum of four people per stateroom on a Restricted Guarantee booking.
There is typically more availability for three or fewer guests per room. All Disney Cruise staterooms can hold three guests, but only some can hold four.
If you’re looking for these cruise fares on Disney’s web site, look for fares labeled “Guaranteed Inside Stateroom with Restrictions” or similar for Oceanview or Verandah. The key words are “…with restrictions.”

The one major change that you can make after booking: additional guests can be added to a stateroom, subject to space restrictions. Restrictions and booking rules are subject to change.

If you are going on a Disney cruise and think there is any chance you or a friend or relative may want to go on another Disney cruise in the next 24 months, be sure to book a future cruise while you are still onboard the ship . Disney has one of the most generous onboard booking programs in the cruise industry, and it’s a great way to get a discount and lower deposit on a future Disney cruise. When you book a future cruise while still onboard the ship you get all of the following benefits:

A 10% discount on the final cruise fare (with some blackout dates ; see below). Does not apply to Concierge bookings.
A lower deposit requirement of only 10% on 7+ night cruises (regular deposit requirement is 20%). Does not apply to Concierge bookings.
If you booked your current cruise with Small World Vacations and also use them as your agent for the future cruise , you’ll also get half their normal onboard credit . (Note that if you didn’t book your current cruise with Small World Vacations, the onboard booking agents may not let you add Small World as your agent while onboard. In that case, you would have to transfer your booking to Small World after you get home, but you would still be eligible for half their normal credit.)

You can book either a specific cruise or a “placeholder” cruise. A placeholder lets you make a booking without picking a specific cruise. It can be associated with a specific cruise later, after you get home and decide. To book a specific cruise onboard, you put down a deposit of 10% or 20% of the whole fare, depending on the length of the cruise. To book a placeholder, you put down a flat $250 deposit per future stateroom. When you change a placeholder to a specific cruise booking you’ll have to pay any increase in deposit. Keep in mind, there is an advantage to booking a specific cruise as early as possible: you lock in the rate. So, if there is a cruise you might want to take, it’s a good idea to book that specific cruise rather than a placeholder. Even if you’re not 100% sure that’s your perfect cruise, remember you can change it later with no penalty.

If you ultimately decide not to take a cruise, Disney will refund 100% of your deposit or placeholder payment . You always get a 100% refund as long as you haven’t passed the penalty date (120-75 days from sailing, depending on the cruise), and you didn’t book a concierge room or suite. There’s basically no risk, though it does tie up some deposit money while you think about your options.

You can change almost every aspect of your booking as many times as you need to and still keep the benefits . The name of one adult in each stateroom must stay the same, but you can change the names of any of the other guests, or increase or reduce the number of guests. You can change the stateroom category. You can change the ship or the sailing as long as the sail date is within 24 months of the initial booking date. If you end up changing to a more expensive booking, you’ll need to make up the difference between your original deposit and the new deposit. Keep in mind that if you later add a guest to a stateroom, they will get added at current rates, not at your initial booking rates. For the lowest final price and most flexibility, it’s a good idea to make the initial booking with everyone who might go, rather than only the people you know are going to go.

You get the full discount for up to two future staterooms or placeholders per household (i.e. per mailing address). Once you leave the ship, you can’t book more , so we recommend booking two (or more) every time, if you can afford to tie up the deposit money. If you later decide that you want to bring another family along, or put the kids in their own stateroom, you’ll be glad to have two rooms booked with the discount.

You can get the full discount for friends or relatives who are not sailing on your cruise. You’ll need your friends’ full legal names (as written on their passport) and their birth dates. Under the current rules, the first stateroom or placeholder you book with this discount on the future cruise needs to include at least one adult who is on the current cruise, in addition to anyone else you want to add, and then the second stateroom can have anyone in it. For example, say you wanted to book a cruise for your friends, the Smith family. You could book one room for your own family, then book the second room (on the same cruise) for the Smith family.

If you already have a future cruise booked, you can usually “re-shop” your existing booking and get the discount. However, you basically have to make a new booking and cancel the old one, and the price might have gone up since you booked originally, potentially wiping out your discount. Be sure to compare the bottom-line price for both bookings.

A few other terms & conditions:

There is no discount or lower deposit for 1- or 2-night sailings, IGT, OGT and VGT Restricted Guarantee bookings, or concierge staterooms and suites.
You can get the 10% discount and reduced deposit on a maximum of two staterooms per household.
Onboard booking incentives CANNOT be combined with any group discounts organized by a travel agency.
Disney could change these rules and benefits at any time. Check onboard for the latest terms.

Specific cruises you’re interested in, if you plan to book a cruise and not a placeholder ( or just rough notes with your needs/restrictions like dates or region )
Birth dates for everyone ( optional, but makes everything go smoother )
Bring the info with you on the cruise. If you just want to book a basic placeholder, you can do that while on the cruise with the Disney Navigator App on your phone (if you don’t already have it, just search for “Disney Navigator” in the Apple or Google app stores; you can download it before the cruise leaves to save time). If you want to do anything more complicated you’ll need to talk to a consultant at the future cruise desk.
If you can’t or don’t want to use the the Navigator app, at some point early in the cruise, go to the Future Bookings Desk on deck 4 and either fill out a form, or just put your room number and name on the sheet you brought (if it has all the details on it they’ll need) and drop it in the box. You can also wait for a consultant if they’re there, or check the schedule and come back when they’re scheduled to be there. If you drop off a form, they’ll secure a hold on a reservation and leave a printout by your stateroom door. If the reservation looks good, either go back to the desk to finish the booking or call 7-2848 from your stateroom phone. Either way, when the booking is done ask for a printed confirmation of your final reservation.
Before you leave the ship, confirm that everything is correct . You should have a printed confirmation or an emailed confirmation. The confirmation should show that your deposit is paid (if not, the booking will be canceled). If this isn’t on your confirmation, go to the Future Bookings Desk or Guest Services and make sure everything is correct. If you are working with a travel agent, verbally confirm that they are listed on the reservation before you leave the ship.
That’s it! If you booked a “placeholder” cruise, you can start the process of finding your actual cruise. If you are using a travel agent , email them to let them know you booked onboard. Once you’ve settled on the cruise you really want to take, change the booking as soon as you can to the actual sailing date to lock in the lowest possible fares and get the best choice of staterooms.

Disney Cruise Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders

Disney Visa cardholders who use their card as their payment method onboard automatically get several discounts on purchases on the ship and on Castaway Cay. In order for this to happen, you have to register your Disney Visa card when you check in at the port. You do not need to charge the cruise fare on your Disney Visa to get the discounts.

You should not need to ask at purchase time to get the discounts; if you have the card registered any discounts should automatically be applied when you make an eligible purchase.

These discounts cannot be combined with any other discounts you might qualify for, such as Disney Vacation Club discounts.

Discounts include:

10% off selected merchandise purchases of $50 or more. Excludes sale merchandise, gift cards, Castaway Cay merchandise, DVDs, CDs, big-ticket items like art, jewelry, fragrances, cosmetics and watches, plus several vague catch-all categories like “selected special items.” Basically, ask first if you’ll get the 10% off, if it’s important to your purchase decision.

Costco members can get rebates on Disney cruises, which come in the form of a Costco gift card. However, Costco Travel is not a full-service travel agency: don’t expect much service or information.

In our experience, Costco reps are very nice, but don’t know much about Disney Cruise Line. They almost certainly have never been on a Disney cruise, and may have never been on a cruise of any kind. If you choose to go this route, be prepared to spend time and energy doing your own research about what your package includes and how everything works. Heaven help you if you need to book something complicated like connecting rooms or want to know the pros and cons of different stateroom options. Costco Travel most definitely won’t be able to offer any insider tips on what to expect or help you take advantage of special booking tricks or “secret” room upgrades. Effectively you’re just booking the cruise yourself, but through Costco instead of Disney.

In addition, we find the Costco reps are clueless about Disney’s promotional offers — they really only know about the Costco rebate. You will have to do your own monitoring to see if any specials or price drops come out, and then see if you can get them applied to your booking. A top-notch Disney specialist agency will do this for you automatically, adjusting your reservation to reflect any current offers or discounts.

Travelocity sometimes has special deals on Disney cruises. They are usually fairly last-minute offers, most typically no more than 6 months in advance. Travelocity also sometimes advertises “15% off shore excursions” but be aware that those are privately booked excursions through a company called Port Promotions, NOT the official Disney excursions.

Expedia has the same base prices as everyone else, but occasionally they will have their own additional offer, like onboard credit or extra Expedia rewards points. Be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully; in some cases there are sharp limits on the extra rewards or credit, or it will only apply to the cruise fare for the first two guests instead of the entire cruise fare.

Absolutely unheard of for DCL to offer this much discount. Another example that DCL is not filling up it’s ships. If they’ll drop all the unnecessary medical restrictions they wouldn’t have to do this. We’ll wait. It’s only a matter of time.

Do you ever get bored of parroting the same trite diatribe? DCL is and has been doing just fine. And doesn’t need guests who won’t follow safety measures to help keep crew, cast members and guests safe. Additionally, it is not unheard of. DCL used to even offer kids sail free promotions.

The offer is for the 3rd and 4th passenger, not just kids. And just because they are sailing doesn’t mean they’re doing fine. Their ships are simply not at capacity at their choice.

If Disney would quit mandating a vaccine that does not work they would not have trouble getting the ships full. We love Disney cruises but won’t be sailing again as long as that mandate is in place. Pretty much everyone has immunity at this point between the shots and the actual virus. Stop the madness.

Madness is comments like yours. The idea that a vaccinated or previously infected person can’t get Covid or get it multiple times is complete disinformation. And, you are showing a clear lack of understanding of how vaccines works. There’s been so much education on this – it’s just bizarre that people still chose to be misinformed.

I’m not sure what your argument is here. It appears that you are admitting that vaccinated and previously infected individuals can still get and spread the virus. Since we know that to be true, the idea that only vaccinated individuals can sail in order to prevent the spread of the virus is wrong. We know that every ship that has been sailing under vaccine requirements has been reporting positive tests. The whole time. So if the vaccinated are still getting and spreading the virus on the ships, how does banning the unvaccinated help prevent the spread that is still happening amongst the vaccinated? If the argument is that being vaccinated reduces your symptoms, but does not prevent spread, then you are just talking about how people choose to fight the virus once they become infected. If the vaccine prevented the spread, then ships would have had no positive cases since they re-opened. Or if the vaccine works, then why would you be afraid of sailing with someone not vaccinated? Just because someone is not vaccinated does not mean they are infected and spreading the virus. As of right now, on all cruise lines the unvaccinated are still required to test before sailing. That’s a whole new debate on the efficacy of testing, but the fact that the vaccinated are not required to test means they are ignoring the fact that the CDC admits the vaccine does not prevent the spread of the virus. If they are going to test anyone, they should test everyone. But in any case, vaccinated or not is not changing whether people can spread the virus or not.

I agree that Disney would sell more tickets if they dropped the vaccine requirement. Carnival saw nearly double the amount of bookings once that requirement was dropped. I predict you would see a similar result if Disney finally follows all the other major cruise lines.

I absolutely love the fact that these cruises ban the unvaccinated. Keep your sickly Trump worshipping selves at home.

@Dave – why the hostility to others who think differently? My wife and I are vaccinated but choose not to vaccinate our children. Unfortunately as of right now we can’t go on a DCL cruise. I’m hoping they relax the rules in the near future. There are many of us who are not Trump worshipping, anti-vaxxers who simply feel the world should be back to normal now with all of the options available out there for treatment.

11 ways to save money on a Disney cruise

Two travel truths right now are that travel has become very expensive and air travel is more unpredictable and unpleasant than normal. Personally, I spent $700 round-trip each on domestic economy tickets to take my kid to summer camp 1,000 miles away. That's absolutely insane.

On the other end of the spectrum, another type of travel is having a different kind of moment.

This type of travel remains affordable and typically isn't as stressful as dealing with airports, delays and cancellations. In fact, I'd argue it's the most relaxing and affordable vacation available right now: a cruise ship.

Personally, I'm partial to Disney Cruise Line .

Disney Cruise Line has a reputation for being expensive and designed just for families — though neither of those things actually has to be true . While these cruises can be more expensive than some other cruise lines, if you can select a port you can drive to, you may be surprised at how affordable a Disney cruise can be when viewed as an all-in vacation price.

Here's how to save money on a Disney cruise — and find the cheaper Disney cruises that start at around $500 per person (based on double occupancy) for the entire experience.

That's less than that painful $700 flight — which, unlike a cruise, doesn't include accommodations, meals or entertainment.

Pick the dates that start at just over $1,000

Yes, Disney Cruise Line costs more than Carnival or Royal Caribbean, but throw away the notion that a Disney cruise is unattainably expensive. It simply isn't true. The peak school break weeks are expensive, but with so many three- and four-night sailings, you can choose a long weekend and avoid those pricey weeks if you want to.

As an example, two people can sail for three nights from Miami to the Bahamas on Disney Dream from Friday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Sept. 12 for just $1255.72 in a verandah cabin (not some windowless inside space).

Good luck finding a hotel you actually want to stay at that weekend for three nights in Miami for that price — and remember this $1,256 rate is the price for the entire cruise experience, not just the room.

You don't have to sail from Florida ports during hurricane season to find that $1,000-ish price point. You can sail for roughly the same price from Galveston, Texas to Mexico on Disney Magic in January 2023 on a four-night cruise to Mexico for just $1,441 for two people in a balcony cabin.

Adding two kids to that same Galveston itinerary to make a trip for four people would raise the price to $2,324.

Or, sail from San Diego to Mexico starting at $1,086 in an inside cabin or $1,278 for a verandah room.

Think about it. That $2,324 rate from Galveston for four people works out to $145 per person, per day — which isn't bad compared to what other trips cost these days.

For those same travel dates of Jan. 27-31, 2023, it would cost a family of four $1,444 for four nonstop Basic Economy flights on United from Houston to Cancun. Four nights of lodging at the all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva resort in Cancun (which includes meals, entertainment and a kids club, like the sailing does) come to $3,392 for those four nights.

For the flights and hotel stay, that's just over double the cost of the Disney Cruise for the same number of days visiting roughly the same destination.

Let Disney choose your cabin

A good way to save money on a Disney cruise is to let the cruise line choose your cabin in exchange for a discounted fare. These are called guaranteed rates. You pick the room type (inside, verandah, etc.) but Disney gets to be the one that selects exactly which room within that category you get.

These fares come with additional restrictions around payments and changes, but you can save up to 35% off the going rates. I've had great success with these discounted fares in the past. As long as you aren't too picky about where your room is on the ship, this strategy can be a tremendous way to save on your Disney cruise.

Book via a travel agent that gives you onboard credit

You can log onto the Disney Cruise Line website and book the cruise yourself, but you may not want to when you know a travel agent can do the work for you — and give you some credit back in the process.

The amount varies, but I've gotten up to $750 as a statement credit when I booked a pricier Disney cruise at the concierge level . On the more affordable cruises and cabins, expect the credit to be more in the $75-$200 range.

While the amount will vary, you can often get somewhere between 5-10% of the price of your cruise back in the form of a gift card or shipboard spending credit through a travel agent or even via Costco Travel .

If you aren't sure where to start, you can get offers from agents who want to book your cruise — sometimes with extra perks and credits — via Cruise Compete .

Pay with discounted Disney gift cards

At wholesale clubs, such as Sam's Club and Costco, you can reliably purchase Disney gift cards at a discount . Sometimes, these discounts get even bigger around sales such as Black Friday. But on an ongoing basis, you can usually get a $500 Disney gift card for about $485.

That's not a huge discount, but if you paid for your $3,000 Disney cruise with those cards, it would save you $90.

If you have a Target credit card, you can also save 5% on Disney gift cards at Target. On that same $3,000 Disney Cruise, that's $150 saved by going that route.

Remember that you can often earn bonus points with certain credit cards when shopping for Disney gift cards depending on where you purchase them. Office supply stores, grocery stores and even wholesale clubs can be good bonus categories for different rewards credit cards, allowing you to earn 3, 4 or 5 points per dollar on your card while you buy your gift cards.

Use your credit card points

Not all credit card points can easily translate to a "free" Disney cruise, but some can.

The easiest way to do this is to pay some — or all — of the cruise with a credit card that lets you use your points at a fixed value to erase a travel charge. This way, you could book with a travel agent to get that onboard credit and then use your points to wipe out your deposit or final payment.

For example, if you put the charge on your Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card or Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , you could use the miles at 1 cent each in value to wipe out the cost. The first example given, on the three-night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas for $1,255 ,would take about 125,500 Venture miles to fully erase the cash cost.

With those two welcome bonuses currently each at 75,000 bonus miles after $4,000 in spending in the first three months from account opening, that's not an unrealistic goal.

Upgrade at the port for less

This tip isn't exactly about saving money overall, but it is a way to get a better room for less than the original list price.

If the cruise isn't sold out, you can go to a special desk at the port before you board and ask about any space-available discounted upgrades. At Port Canaveral, where all the Disney check-in desks are on the left side of the terminal building, the upgrade desk is the rightmost desk.

The cost to upgrade will be related to the room type you've booked and the one you'd like to upgrade to. The supervisor will use a pre-printed chart to find that cost differential. It will cost less than if you had booked a better room initially, sometimes by about half, though that number varies.

On our Disney Dream cruise this spring, I was able to upgrade to a larger and more deluxe cabin for $34. Total. Get to the terminal as soon as you can if you are hoping for a suite or concierge upgrade because those are very limited and go quickly.

While I haven't done it, I've also heard that even cheaper prices become available on board once the ship sets sail, though I haven't tried that myself.

Save 10% by putting a deposit for your next cruise down while you're on board

The easiest way to save 10% on a Disney cruise doesn't work for your first cruise, but can work for all subsequent ones.

When you are on a Disney Cruise Line ship, you can put a $250 placeholder deposit down on a future Disney cruise to be used within two years. This can be done in your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app while on board.

You don't have to pick which cruise you want to do at that moment, but by putting that $250 in a placeholder you can not only apply that $250 when you ultimately pick your next Disney cruise but also save 10% off the rate valid on most dates and room types in the process.

That one step can save you hundreds of dollars on your vacation. Worst case scenario, that $250 is refunded to you if you don't book another cruise in the next two years. That happened to us during the pandemic, and the money came back automatically and without a problem once the 24 months were up.

BYOB and skip the extras

If you are looking to trim costs on your Disney cruise, bring things from home that you would otherwise likely purchase.

For example, you can bring up to six cans of beer or two bottles of wine per person aged 21 and up. Instead of paying cruise prices for those beverages, you can bring what you want from home at regular land-based prices, up to those maximum limits.

You can also bring one case of unopened water bottles on board. These come in handy for shore excursions or when you need to hydrate by the pool. (Better yet, pack a refillable water bottle.)

Since a Disney Cruise already includes meals, room service, snacks, soft-serve ice cream, fountain drinks and plenty of entertainment, you don't need to spend anything additional on board if you don't want to. This is especially true on a new-to-you ship and on those shorter three- and four-night cruises where there is more than enough to do and explore already.

Just carry on a few beverages and skip all the extras.

If your sailing goes to Disney Cruise Line's private island, Castaway Cay , beach chairs, umbrellas, the ocean waterslide and lunch on the island are also included at no extra charge.

Seek out spa discounts

If you're focused on saving money, you'll want to skip the spa entirely on your cruise. But if nothing says vacation like a massage, you can find a discount on onboard spa services on a Disney cruise.

I've received a port day discount that was about 20% off because most people book their treatments on sea days, and the spa is less busy when the ship is docked. The Disney Visa also advertises a 20% discount on select massages or facials on port days on an ongoing basis.

I've also received $50 off a second service while checking out for my first. It's fairly common for cruise ship spas to offer discounts when you book multiple treatments.

If you don't see a discount advertised, just ask at the spa desk. That's how I got hooked up with spa deals on previous Disney cruises.

Use Disney Visa onboard cruise discounts

In addition to the 20% off select spa treatments, Disney Visa cardholders also get 10% off a Castaway Cay package that includes snorkel gear, a bike rental and an inner tube. Additional discounts include 10% off onboard merchandise purchases of $50 or more and onboard photos.

If you need time to spread out payments, those with a Disney Visa can also get a 0% annual percentage rate on their Disney vacation for six months. Right now, the card also has a welcome bonus of up to $300 toward a Disney vacation.

Book early and go off-peak

This is a no-brainer tip to avid cruisers, but if you are newer to cruising, know that booking early and sailing off-peak are great ways to save money on a Disney cruise.

I booked our Alaska cruise for the summer of 2023 the day the calendar opened this year because the price typically increases as the sailing date nears. You can sometimes find last-minute specials, but most of the time, cruise prices only go one direction — up.

You'll put 20% down when you first book and then have until much closer to sailing to pay off the remaining 80%.

Date flexibility will also help you save money on a Disney cruise. The same itinerary that costs $2,000 in September will be up to three times more expensive if you want to sail over winter break.

If you can't find any affordable prices, I recommend scrolling the cruise list by price instead of starting with the perfect date or itinerary. A sailing you may not have initially considered may turn out to be the perfect vacation option.

Bottom line

Believe it or not, a Disney cruise can be much cheaper than a trip to the Disney theme parks. ( A cruise is often much less stressful, too .)

Remember that $2,324 four-night sailing from Galveston to Mexico for a family of four? At $145 per person, per night, it's absolutely less than a trip to Disney World. Park tickets alone these days can be close to $145 per person and Disney resort rooms are $200-$700 or more per night, depending on your resort choice.

Add food costs on top of that, and you're almost certainly well above the price of a Disney cruise.

If you stack on some of these tips to save money on your Disney cruise, you could knock anywhere from 10-25% off the list price, depending on how many of the tips you are able to use.

As for me, I'm seriously contemplating that January getaway from Texas that will take us to Mexico and provide for all our lodging, meal and entertainment needs in the process.

Now I just need to figure out how much in additional savings I can stack onto the already pretty fair rate.

Lots of synergistic stuff is happening for Disney+ Day at Disney Parks. In terms of commentary, it’s pretty obvious that Disney Cruise Line is still struggling to fully recover based on the degree of discounting we’ve seen firsthand.

In addition to the general public special offers , there are a number of deeper discounts for Florida residents, US military personnel, Canadian residents, Cast Members, travel agents, and other affiliations of which I’m probably unaware.

Disney Cruise Line’s recent special offers prior to this Disney+ Day deal have included Halloween on the High Seas, Very Merry Time Christmas Cruises, Marvel Day at Sea, and other themed sailings. These discounts are still available, running between now and May 2023, with over 100 sailings discounted out of several departure cities including Port Canaveral and beyond.

Between around 2018 and early 2020, this degree of discounting simply was not occurring. Even during the ‘glory days’ of DCL deals, I don’t recall anything on par with what has been available in the last year. It’s a relatively unprecedented time for Disney Cruise Line deals, and it looks like it’ll last at least a few more months.

It’s curious how the tables have turned when it comes to Walt Disney World v. DCL discounts. Between 2018 and 2020, deals at WDW were abundant and aggressive. Now, they’re relatively meager. Pent-up demand is still running strong for the parks, to the point that resort reservations are difficult even at full price for October through December 2022.

If you’re wondering what’s up with the DCL discounts, it’s due to health safety protocol. There are undoubtedly other contributing factors, but that’s the big one. This has discouraged some people from cruising while preventing others from doing so. With the end of testing for vaccinated guests , some members of the former group will have one big barrier removed later this month (or November 2022, in the case of the Disney Magic).

I’m one member of this group. Not to belabor the point or rehash commentary covered elsewhere, but I’ve been in “wait and see” mode when it comes to cruising for a while. There have been too many hoops to jump through, compromises to the on-board experience, and the potential risk of being denied boarding erroneously.

Recently, some of that has been dropped and I’ve cruised aboard the new Disney Wish. I found the pre-departure testing to be nerve-racking. I essentially didn’t engage in any indoor activities for nearly two weeks beforehand and even then was worried about testing positive. To be blunt, that’s not something I would do again–we would’ve cancelled upcoming sailings had the policy remained in place.

This may sound excessive, but I really didn’t want to deal with the hassle and uncertainty of being denied boarding. I enjoy cruising, but not enough to go through that repeatedly. Given the degree of discounting for cruises even as every other segment of the travel industry has been red hot, I cannot be alone in that sentiment.

In addition to people like me who didn’t want to deal with the hassles and headaches, there’s another huge pool of potential guests who flat-out cannot set sail aboard Disney Cruise Line at this time. There are undoubtedly others at the opposite end of the spectrum, who could cruise but would not out of concern about insufficient health safety measures aboard ships. I suspect the Diamond Princess and other incidents back in early 2020 have left lasting scars for some.

Whatever the causes, the end result is that the pool of potential customers for Disney Cruise Line is smaller than normal–even as DCL has expanded its fleet by adding another ship. More supply but less demand is a recipe for savings, and we’re seeing exactly that play out with this Disney+ Day deal and other recent special offers.

Ultimately, it’ll be interesting to see how long these Disney Cruise Line discounts persist. My guess is as long as any health safety measures or restrictions remain in place, plus another 6 months or so. (Since very few people travel immediately upon booking.) In short, it’s a great time to set sail and take advantage of these unprecedented DCL discounts. It’s likely they’ll stick around until policies change (and also likely that policies will change very soon given their economic impact on DCL), so you probably have until at least May 2023 before rates start rising again.

Thanks, Tom. We booked a 5 night cruise shortly after reading your original post. I actually happened to have a tab for the same sailing open from the day before, and it was more than $2500 cheaper than that tab! Still not sure it’s a great value, but probably got the per day cost for a verandah class room below what it would cost us to day a day at WDW between park tickets and room, and that’s before you even count F&B and Genie+ and ILL.

Your readership seems to skew aggressively anti-vaccination (especially for a disease that has killed over a million Americans and is still killing hundreds each day), but when I look at pricing for next years’ Alaska cruises and Europe sailings (with standard verandahs starting around $10k for a week on many sailings), I don’t think Disney is having any trouble filling its ships with parents who aren’t afraid of vaccinations. I’m looking forward to picking up dropped births at the holiday sailings cancellation deadlines if they policy stays in place! I think it should be in the next couple weeks? FWIW, I do agree that the recent vax upload and testing system was annoying, but the process on Celebrity and Princess was very smooth, so it didn’t have to be *as bad* as it was on Disney.

@JenL, respectfully I think most people seem to be anti MANDATE as opposed to anti VACCINATE. Especially when things are mandated to make people “feel safe” instead actually keeping people safe. There is a difference. Not trying to start any fights just clarifying. Tom if I went too far I’m sure you’ll kick my comment off 😀 And seems pretty clear to me anyway that if Disney wasn’t hurting for bookings they’d never have extended this offer in an attempt to entice people to sail. I felt a little silly booking a cruise on the Dream this morning when we’re already doing a cruise on the Magic in October (NYC to Canada!) but this kind of deal doesn’t strike twice. We’ve been on the Dream more than any other ship and it’s not one we were itching to return to but it’s the one that worked best with my work schedule. So, I’ll finally be able to find out the question that’s we’ve all been waiting for answer on: Was that awkward Bob Iger segment in Golden Mickeys replaced with an awkward Bob Chapek segment or has that bit been cut altogether?

Disney needs to get with program and end vaccinations for 12+ passengers like 9 other cruise lines have. RCL Norwegian Holland America, etc. they’re all hurting for passengers. Bahamas doesn’t require vaccinations to visit so what’s the hold up? Not requiring testing on vaccinated passengers isn’t following any scientific data, they’re the ones who keep getting it!

Tom and Sarah, thanks for all the info you provide. We were looking at DCL options the past few weeks for what will be our first Disney cruise. The Disney+ special offer was perfectly timed for us and definitely tipped the scales for our decision. We booked two cabins for 4 adults and 3 kids early Thursday morning. With the Disney+ offer, we saved $2190 as compared with the day-before rate. Our five night cruise on the Dream during MLK week with a Marvel day at sea in verandah cabins comes to an average of $945 pp after the discount. We think that will be a solid value.

I will go on a Disney cruise as long as they do have mandates. Because they don’t have them at the parks, I won’t go there. There are those of us with compromised immune systems that people just don’t seem to care about.

You are spot on. We are DVC members and would love to do a cruise. But I will never step foot on one of their ships until ALL mandates are dropped! My family will never get the vaccine so unless it is dropped we will never cruise.

I hate to tell you this but you are in the minority. People have moved on. There are definitely people out there who align with your thinking but the number of people who have moved on far surpasses it. A vaccinated person can spread it exactly the same as an unvaccinated person and can also get it just the same as an unvaccinated person. So there is no point in differentiating between vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Same. I’ve got two DCL cruises booked: a seven day in March and a ten day in July. Unless they drop all mandates I am cancelling both. I booked in the hopes that they will come to their senses but right now I’m just waiting.

100% agree. We’ve sailed 3 times and won’t ever again unless the mandates are dropped. It’s a joke at this point.

All of what you shared makes a ton of sense. The news coming off of cruise ships I think is what has a lot of folks apprehensive and holding back. While I think this is probably true of any travel, the online chatter in cruise forums shows a high level of people coming home from their trip with COVID. Whether its at higher rates than a Disney World vacation, I have no idea … but it seems like it is or may be.

You’re spot on. We’d love to go on a Disney cruise but won’t until all restrictions are dropped. Disney knows that’s the issue as well based on the very blunt surveys they push out if you get on the DCL website. It point blank asks if their mandates are the reason you’re sailing or the reason you won’t sail. Hope they drop all mandates sooner rather than later. We’re checking out other cruise lines. My husband always refused to cruise other lines as he felt he’d be disappointed after the amazing Disney cruises we’ve taken but is now willing to try other cheaper options. I can’t imagine paying the crazy high Disney cruise prices then spending the time before freaking out wondering if we’ll be let on or not. That’s not a vacation…

We were so excited to take advantage of this deal, but then only to find out they’re still requiring proof of vaccination. Oh well their loss, we won’t go until this nonsense is stopped.

You are correct in your assessments. We’re so anxious to cruise again on DCL and are in the pool of potential guests that can’t. Every week we check for news on protocols dropping off and it’s happening on other cruise lines. Starting to think about booking with another company but wishing Disney will drop all protocols so we can sail with them again!

Disney Cruise Deals: How to Score the Best Bargain for Your Vacation

Shopping for Disney cruise deals can make a sprinkle of pixie dust feel necessary to get those magic prices. And even when you find what looks like a good deal, it may be hard to decipher those Disney cruise prices.

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) offers a unique product within the cruise market and prices reflect that. But there are deals to be had on Disney cruises. Yes, there are last-minute Disney cruise deals. You'll also find Disney World and Disney cruise package deals. There are even Disney cruise deals for Florida residents and members of the military.

Cruise Critic made the necessary calculations to get you the scoop on the deals that are available and tips to help you find them. Here’s what you need to know.

What Kind of Disney Cruise Deals Can You Expect to Find?

Disney cruise deals are a bit elusive. In order to sift through the deals you might encounter -- whether directly through Disney Cruise Line, on Cruise Critic or from a travel agent -- there are some basic numbers you should know in order to maximize your cruise's value.

Deals on Disney cruises' inside cabins start at around $180 per person per night (before taxes and port fees). Anything even close should be considered a deal. For oceanview staterooms, fares close to $225 per person per night are deals. And while the gold standard for cruise deals across the mainstream cruise lines is around $100 per person per night for balcony cabins, Disney is not a mainstream cruise line. Any balcony cabin on a Disney ship priced under $300 per night is a good deal. Disney Cruise Line's largest rooms are Concierge Class cabins, and come in a wide array of prices. If you can snag one close to the $400 per person per night mark, you’ve got yourself a Disney cruise deal.

Pricing gets tricky on Disney cruises when it comes to adding people beyond the first two. And because it’s Disney, most people are adding kids to their staterooms. The basic premise is that the older the child, the more you will pay to add them to a stateroom. We found that adding a 13- to 17-year-old (or an adult) will cost between 60 and 77% of the fare paid for the first two passengers in the cabin, depending on the length of the cruise. Adding a 3- to 12-year-old will cost between 57% and 74% of the base fare and adding a 1- or 2-year-old adds 33 to 44% of the base.

Note that if you're using Disney's own cruise site , the price will at first look significantly higher than using a booking engine or other cruise line's website. So, don't get sticker shock when the price for a particular sailing starts at $2,067. What it means is that the lowest priced cabin they have available for the sailing is $920 per person plus port taxes and fees, for a total for two people of $2,067. Once you get used to it, it’s actually a nice feature you’ll wish other cruise lines would adopt so you aren’t hit with that big number after you’ve picked the stateroom of your dreams.

Seasonal Disney Cruise Deals

The best time to shop for Disney cruise deals happens at the time you are most likely to be dreaming of summer vacation -- January, February and March (wave season). Other than those three months, watch for Black Friday and Cyber Monday cruise deals. Expect prices for the Christmas and New Year's holidays to skyrocket.

What seasons are the cheapest for cruising with Disney? It depends on your destination, but for a Disney cruise in the Caribbean or Bahamas, expect high prices any time kids are out of school. Look for Disney cruise deals when schools are in session and during the months of September and October, which coincides with peak Atlantic hurricane season.

And don’t overlook shoulder seasons to find a Disney cruise deal. That’s the transition period between busy and not-so-busy times of year. For example, the Disney Alaska cruise shoulder seasons are late April to May and September through early October.

Are There Disney Drink Deals?

Wondering about Disney cruise drink deals? There are two major things you should know that set Disney cruise lines apart.

The first is that sodas are free at the soda stations at the buffet and on the pool deck. That eliminates the need for a soda package -- and should keep kids happy.

The second is that there are no traditional adult beverage packages. You can purchase a bottled wine package of 3, 5, or 7 bottles and there are drink specials like beer six packs, daily cocktail specials and a beer token for a reduced-price refill of your souvenir beer mug.

Other than those deals, you simply pay by the drink. Guests are allowed to bring two bottles of wine onboard on embarkation day in their carry-on luggage.

How to Get the Best Deals on Disney Cruises: Our Expert Tips

Let's start with the most basic tips you'll need to score a Disney cruise deal:

As on most cruise lines, newer ships have higher prices. In Disney’s case, that means cruises on Disney Wish will cost you more.

Check out Cruise Critic's Disney cruise deals , which rank bargains from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best deal possible.

Cruises that include Christmas and New Year’s holidays are expensive, but the weeks before and after can be great for bargain hunters. Look for cruises that end before December 23 or start January 2 or later for the deals.

Take advantage of Disney's Castaway Club loyalty program . You are automatically enrolled after your first Disney cruise. Discounts on cruises begin after your fifth cruise. Make sure you enter this number as you shop for future cruises on Disney.

Internet access and cruising don’t always mix, but if you set sail on a Disney cruise , you have several options to post the occasional picture on Instagram or check your email. Disney Cruise Line offers several internet packages aboard its fleet. All Disney cruise ships have WiFi .

Until recently, all internet packages aboard Disney cruises were priced with a “pay for what you use” model, with data plans based on megabyte usage. With the arrival of the Disney Wish in 2022, Disney announced changes to the Disney Cruise Line internet packages, which are now priced based on the type of internet access you want in a 24-hour period. These changes have now been rolled out on all ships, with the Disney Wonder being the final ship to upgrade to the new system during a September 2023 Dry Dock.

Below, we discuss everything you need to know about how Disney Cruise WiFi works in 2023.

Disney Cruise Line Internet Packages

WiFi is available in three packages, each with a different level of internet access: Stay Connected , Basic Surf , and Premium Surf :

These packages are based on usage for a 24-hour period, not a calendar day. If the time of day you use the internet matters to you, you’ll want to purchase a plan at a time that will renew when it’s convenient — and not in the middle of a work meeting.

You can share the plan on multiple devices (as long as you log out of one device before using the other) or pay to connect multiple devices simultaneously. And you can save a little money by purchasing for the entire length of your cruise.

Packages previously varied by ship, but these are now the standard packages across the entire fleet: the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , Disney Magic , Disney Wish , and Disney Wonder .

The most basic internet package on a Disney cruise allows you to access, post, and engage on social media platforms, specifically Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter/X, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Tumblr.

This mid-tier internet package allows access to the social media platforms listed above, plus basic browser surfing and email capabilities. Audio WiFi calls are also available with this package.

The highest internet Disney cruise WiFi plan gives you all the access included in the Stay Connected and Basic Surf plans (with faster connection speeds). Plus, you can stream music and short-form video on apps like Pandora, Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube. Video calling through FaceTime and Zoom is also available with this package.

Disney Cruise Line allows guests to access the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App for free.

The app is similar to the My Disney Experience app and includes a host of information about your cruise. You can view your planned activities, excursions, rotational dining assignments, deck plans, entertainment schedules, dinner menus, and much more.

One of the app’s most handy features is the ability to message friends and family who are also on board.

If you want to truly unplug during your cruise vacation, the WiFi access you get through the Navigator app may be all the internet you need during your Disney cruise.

Stay in a Concierge-Level Stateroom

One benefit of staying in a concierge-level stateroom is free WiFi. How much internet you’ll get depends on the type of stateroom you booked. Those staying in Royal Suites get Premium Surf internet for the entire cruise. Concierge Suites get Basic Surf for the whole cruise, too. Other Concierge-Level staterooms get one day of Basic Surf for free.

Use Your Onboard Credit

Many Disney travel agencies offer a free onboard credit that can be used toward purchases you make while you’re onboard the ship. You can spend this on specialty dining, gratuities/tips , spa treatments, souvenirs… and virtually anything else that’s charged back to your shipboard account.

Luckily for you, onboard internet packages are charged to the folio, so onboard credit can be used to pay towards your onboard WiFi package.

The size of your onboard credit depends on the travel agency you pick and the cost of your cruise, but it could easily be enough to cover the cost of your shipboard internet.

How to Use the Internet on Disney Cruise Line

Internet packages can be purchased through the Disney Cruise Navigator app once onboard and connected to the ship’s WiFi. To buy a plan, click the “more” tab in the app and scroll down to “connect to the Internet.” From there, you can select a package, the number of devices you want to use, and the number of days you wish to purchase. You’ll then be prompted to review the plan and check out. The package will be charged to your stateroom folio. If you have trouble connecting to the internet, the onboard internet help desk can troubleshoot internet and cell phone access onboard.

Can You Share Internet on a Disney Cruise?

You can share one internet plan on multiple devices if you only use one at a time and log out of each device when you’re done using it.

Multiple-device plans are also offered; choosing one of these will save you a bit of money versus the cost of purchasing two separate plans.

How Much is WiFi on a Disney Cruise?

WiFi plans have starting rates between $16 to $42 a day. The price can vary drastically based on the number of days you purchase and the amount of connected devices. You’ll get a slight discount if you purchase a plan for your entire cruise. You also save for each device you add.

Does Disney Cruise Line Have Cell Service?

Whether your cell phone will work on a Disney cruise depends on your carrier and plan. Cell carriers like AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile provide Cellular at Sea aboard Disney cruises, which allows you to use your plan like you normally would in your stateroom. However, you may need to pay roaming charges (which can get very expensive, very quickly) or purchase a special cruise add-on from your carrier. Your data allotment (cellular internet) also may be much more limited than on land. It’s best to check with your individual cell phone carrier before your cruise to determine how cell phone data usage will work while onboard.

How Good is the WiFi on Disney Cruise Ships?

While the internet speed on cruise ships has improved drastically over the years, it’s slower than the web surfing you’re used to at home.

Disney warns cruise guests that onboard internet may sometimes be slow, interrupted, or completely unavailable. This is especially true on at-sea days; the final sea day of a Disney Alaska cruise is notoriously bad for internet due to the ship’s position and direction of travel.

However, most cruisers will typically find onboard internet sufficient to occasionally check email, post on social media , or make a video call.

What New Disney Cruise Ships Are Being Built?

After everything that’s happened in 2020, many of us don’t just feel like we need a vacation. We feel like we need two.

A small cruise line is offering an unheard of deal that give you exactly that. Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line isn’t a household name like larger rivals such as Carnival or Royal Caribbean, but it is offering a deal that those cruise lines can’t touch.

If you book select cruises in 2021, the line is offering a buy one, get one free deal. That’s right. Book one cruise and get another free .

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line's Grand Celebration

The offer applies only to certain cruises, as you might expect. The first trip must sail between January 1 and April 30, 2021 aboard the line’s Grand Celebration ship.

Book this deal and you’ll get to book your free sailing anytime between August 16, 2021 and February 28, 2022.

“Now more than ever, we can all use a getaway, but we know that times are tough for so many, given all that has happened this year. With our new BOGO offer, we’re excited to give travelers the chance to book two vacations for the price of one,” said Oneil Khosa, CEO of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line.

Details about the free cruise are sparse, including if it’s completely free or if things like port fees, taxes and gratuities are extra. It’s also unclear if the free cruise is on either ship in the cruise line’s fleet or if the free cruise only applies to the Grand Celebration. We’ve reached out for details and are waiting to hear back.

The Cruise Line

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line may not be a household name, but it is among the most unique lines out there. The fleet sails from the Port of Palm Beach, offering cruises to the Bahamas aboard two ships — Grand Celebration and Grand Classica.

These trips aren’t your typical cruises. In fact, they are extremely short trips that are just two nights. For some, taking a two-night cruise seems crazy. After all, you are barely on the ship before it’s time to get off to go home. But for those that want an affordable and quick vacation, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line is hard to beat.

Speaking of affordable, cruises from the line are among the cheapest you’ll find anywhere. Rates for the BOGO offer start as low as $109 per person, although taxes and port fees do bring the total up to about $400 for two people to sail.

Even so, that’s considerably cheaper than just about any other cruise you’ll find from a major line.

While we don’t have personal experience sailing the line, the ship offers much of what you’d expect on any major cruise line. In fact, the ships are older vessels formerly owned by other lines. The Grand Celebration, for example, was operated by Carnival until 2008.

On board, there is everything you’d expect from a cruise including food, bars, casino, pools, and entertainment. There is even a kid’s area if you’re sailing as a family.

Return to Sailing Date & Procedures

Remember that this deal applies to initial sailings between January 1 and April 30. Obviously no one is entirely certain that cruises will be sailing at that time. Between CDC orders, an industry-wide voluntary suspension, and local rules regarding cruise ships in the Bahamas, there are certainly several hurdles that need to be overcome before sailing again.

As of now the cruise line is slated to return to sailing with a single ship on November 4, 2020, but this date has been moved back several times before. Even so, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line has seemingly stayed on top of the COVID outbreak.

“Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have remained one of the few cruise lines that reported no cases of the virus onboard our ships,” the company said in a statement. “We have also followed all guidelines, including adhering to strict requirements for onboard crew members, and installed the highest safety protocols in the industry across our fleet.”

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line was also among the first lines to announce drastic changes to health protocols in the wake of the COVID pandemic.

Among the changes that will be seen once the cruise line gets back to sailing:

Capacity limits to reduce the number of passengers by 40%
Altered embarkation procedures to increase distancing
Ship fogging and disinfecting with elevators and handrails cleaned every two hours
Fresh air from outside instead of re-circulated air conditioning

In fact, when the CDC extended its no-sail order back in July, it noted that Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line was the only line that had a response plan meeting all of the CDC’s requirements.

There’s no arguing that a two-day cruise to the Bahamas may not be for everyone, but with a buy one, get one free offer — and prices starting at just $109 per person — it’s a hard deal to pass up.

There's a reason why so many travelers become cruise ship loyalists after their first voyage. As anyone who's stepped foot on a cruiseliner will happily tell you, these vessels are much more than floating hotels jumping from port to port. They can be equal parts mega-mall, water park, casino, arcade, Broadway theater district, and gastronomic extravaganza — and the more you pay, the more spectacular your time at sea can be.

You don't always have to pay a pretty penny to upgrade your cruise experience. While all the major perks, such as unlimited food and drink or daily entertainment, are well-advertised, there's also a long list of little-known cheap — and sometimes even free — upgrades you can secure throughout your trip. These tend to be similar across most cruise lines, and you'd be surprised at how easy it is to take your journey to the next level. Here are some of the best to note down before embarking upon your next cruise.

Comfier beds

A bad night's sleep can ruin anyone's mood, even on vacation. Although many cruise lines invest in high-quality mattresses, these can be hit or miss — especially if the ship has been in use for several years or if you're used to a very firm or very soft bed. Luckily, even if you are unfortunate enough to happen upon one that's less than comfortable, all hope is not lost.

Many cruise lines — including Royal Caribbean and the Disney Cruise Line — stock extra pillows, mattress toppers, and egg crate mattress pads, which you can request for free from the steward and then adjust the bed to your liking. Should none of these be available, stewards will do whatever they can to make you stay comfier, such as padding out the bed with extra comforters. If there's availability, you may even be able to move to a room with a newer mattress. However, we recommend making these requests as early in your trip as possible. They can (and do) run out. Remember, if your bed is uncomfortable, the odds are other people's beds on the ship follow suit, and they'll also be looking for a way to upgrade their sleeping quarters before hitting the hay.

Walking tours

Any hardcore Disney fan can tell you about the exclusive backstage tours available at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, filling you in on all the magical gossip from the company's history and the life of Walt Disney to hidden Mickeys and Cast Member secrets.

While these can cost upwards of $120 per person, something similar can be secured for free on a Disney Cruise . Offerings vary from voyage to voyage, but typical options include the Walking Ship Tour and the Art of the Theme Show. The latter is only available to guests over the age of 18 and dives deeper into all the innovative Imagineering and little touches of pixie dust that went into building each vessel. It may not actually venture behind the scenes like the tours at Disney Parks, staying only in "onstage" areas (Disney talk for the public area of the ship), but it's an exclusive experience worth it all the same.

Neither of these tours must be booked in advance, but they are only available at scheduled times, as listed on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App . There's no saying how many times these will be offered on your cruise, so we recommend attending the first one that pops up on the app — usually on embarkation day — if you're determined to squeeze it into your vacation.

Sadly, you're unlikely to find an unlimited supply of champagne on any cruise ship (and we're sorry to say that the really good stuff will almost always come with a surcharge), but there are easy ways to secure yourself a complimentary glass or two.

The most popular way is by attending live art auctions. Several cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises , and Celebrity Cruises , host auctions mid-voyage and will kick them off with a champagne toast. Don't worry — you won't be expected to reach into your pockets and invest in any pricey watercolors to justify your drink. However, we recommend sticking around to witness the energy and tension of the auction anyway, purely for entertainment value. Cruise ship art auctions are notoriously chaotic.

It's worth signing up for a cruise line's loyalty program. Even if you're not an annual cruiser, you may find yourself on the receiving end of some bubbly freebies during your trip purely because you're a member. It also pays to check out the special events where passengers meet the captain, which tends to be another champagne hotspot.

Classes and courses

Many cruise lines offer different classes, courses, or workshops — free of charge. Princess Cruises boasts some of the most jam-packed schedules, filled with hands-on lessons in various disciplines. Anyone left wanting to learn more at the end of their session can pay to attend a more in-depth class, usually starting at $10 per person.

You'll also find a strong variety of free enrichment sessions on a Disney Cruise. These offerings vary depending on the ship and the length of your voyage, but the likes of animation, dance, and animal towel folding (which is much harder than you'd think) crop up regularly, while you'll find activities like pumpkin carving and mask-making on Disney's seasonal cruises. You can check out the itinerary for your voyage on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, where you can favorite the activities you want to participate in to receive reminders ahead of time.

Meanwhile, Cunard Line ships offer everything from art to tai chi classes, Crystal Cruises has fitness classes such as spin, yoga, and pilates, and Norwegian Cruise Line has a handful of fitness classes. On Celebrity Cruises, you can even learn the arts of scrapbooking and glassblowing.

Unlimited caviar

If you're looking for something equally luxurious (and every bit as free) to pair with your champagne, you're in luck aboard a Seabourn cruise. Seabourn Cruise Line — which operates deluxe cruises all over the world and is one of the few fleets with free-flowing bubbly — offers complimentary Regiis Ova Caviar service pretty much anywhere on its ships.

All you need to do is order with a nearby cruise staff member, and your caviar will be delivered to you on a silver platter, along with the drink of your choice, all the usual caviar accompaniments such as blinis, sour cream, and crumbled hard-cooked eggs, and, of course, a mother-of-pearl spoon so as to not taint the taste with metal. Best of all, there's no limit to how many times you can order a bowl of salty, smooth goodness on your trip. Combined with the knowledge that caviar rarely costs less than $100 in a restaurant, we recommend gorging while you can.

Seabourn also has a tradition of serving complimentary caviar during its lavish, beachside Caviar in the Surf events, available on select cruises. This day-long event sees uniformed staff serve passengers copious amounts of both iced champagne and caviar (not to mention shucked lobsters, pastries, local fruits, and quiche) from a table-clothed surfboard while waist-deep in the ocean.

Cheaper drinks

Complimentary champagne aside, alcohol usually isn't included in a standard cruise package. If you are drinking, it's easy to get caught up in the vacation mood and costs can quickly add up, which is why it's helpful to know as many hacks to upgrade yourself to cheaper beverages as possible.

You can often slash the price of your drinks if you choose specific items on the menu or order at certain times. Royal Caribbean's bars frequently have hour-long buy one, get one free offers, while Disney Cruise Lines has occasional 30% off happy hours and will sell its drink of the day, usually a cocktail, at a discounted rate (you can see each daily option on the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App). This concept is popular on other cruise lines, too, so be sure to check with your bartender or waiter before ordering. Holland America also offers regular happy hours, and if you join its loyalty program, you can get a voucher for an onboard cocktail.

Another spot that serves up free alcohol is a ship's onboard casino. Signing up for Norwegian Cruise Line's Casinos At Sea Players Club and swiping your card at every game will help you rack up free drinks in no time. Carnival Cruise Line has a similar system, promising that it will help you "earn free drinks twice as fast as on any other cruise line," and Celebrity Cruises offers drinks to those actively playing in the casino.

Spa treatments

On or off land, spa treatments are no cheap treat. Although staff don't walk around the deck handing out free facials, acupuncture, manicures, and pedicures, it is common for cruiseliners to offer 'taster' sessions — usually basic massages — to lure in new passengers.

Unsurprisingly, these tasters tend to be shorter and less intensive than any treatments paid for out of pocket. However, seeing as this is the opportunity for spa therapists to pitch the rest of their treatment menu to you, you'll still get to enjoy an indulgent moment on the house. Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises have offered these in the past, and while they're not a given on every voyage, it's always worth asking, just in case.

You're also more likely to nab free treatments if you head down to any spa demonstrations on the first couple days of your cruise, and they're regularly handed out as prizes at any on-ship quiz nights, raffles, or contests or if you participate in any live entertainment. Even if you opt to treat yourself to a relaxing spa day, you can often pay less if you book it on embarkation day when there are discounts or deals.

Room service

For various reasons, some cruise lines have phased out complimentary room service in the past few years. Fortunately, some are still happy to bring food directly to your cabin.

The likes of Cunard, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines , Holland America, and Disney Cruise Line will let you upgrade to breakfast in bed or a late-night feast. While this service is free, it's worth noting that Disney will add a surcharge for certain premium items — such as soda, alcohol, candy, and other packaged snacks — and you'll be expected to pay a gratuity. On the plus side, you can order freshly-made, indulgent dishes such as baked macaroni cheese, chicken tenders, pizza, and grilled cheese 24 hours a day until 1.30 a.m. on the day of your departure, without ever leaving the comfort of your stateroom.

Holland America also adds a small fee for certain items. Norwegian Cruise Line will bring free food to your room on demand but will charge a small delivery fee of up to $9.95 per order — except for a continental breakfast, which is genuinely free. Celebrity Cruises has the same rules as Norwegian Cruise Line and will also add an 18% gratuity to every order. However, considering how long the buffet lines can get on busy voyages, sometimes it's easy to justify the fee.

A cure for seasickness

The good news is that even those prone to motion sickness usually find that they're totally fine on a cruise ship. The majority of cruiseliners are equipped with stabilizers on either side of the ship that make your trip less rocky. However, if you are unfortunate enough to fall into the minority struck by seasicknesses mid-voyage, cruise lines are well prepared to help you deal with the fallout.

Unlike most other medications, the majority of cruise lines — including Royal Caribbean, the Disney Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises — will give you free seasickness tablets (primarily Dramamine or Bonine) or bands at either guest services or the medical center if you ask. Even if they don't offer actual pills, chewing on ginger is a well-documented natural cure for seasickness, with many cruise lines offering it for free if you just ask at onboard restaurants. Upgrading from nausea to comfort is something you're probably willing to pay for once aboard a ship, but it's even better when you can secure it free of charge.

Birthday celebrations

Whether you're in a restaurant, bar, or cruise ship, people tend to be pretty generous once they know that it's your birthday. Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruises, and many other cruise lines have birthday cakes available for purchase once aboard the ship, but it's also possible to nab some celebratory freebies like a cake, wine, balloons, or even a gift if you call up and let them know it's one of your party's birthday ahead of time.

Some cruise lines have a specific service to register any special occasions ahead of time, such as through the Princess Cruises cruise personalizer. This can mean your stateroom is already decked out for the occasion once you arrive. Guests on the Disney Cruise Line often get a free birthday dessert at dinner if you call and let them know the exact day you're celebrating (although this isn't a given and is totally at each Cast Member's discretion). You can also collect a badge from guest services to wear around the ship that will possibly garner you a few magical moments throughout the day, such as character interactions and a spontaneous round of "Happy Birthday" or two. The same goes for other special occasions, such as anniversaries, graduations, or honeymoons.

You'd be surprised how many people step onto a cruise ship thinking Wi-Fi will be as accessible as in your average hotel. Just like when you're on a plane, internet access is a luxury for which you'll typically need to pay (and when you do pay, there's no guarantee that your connection will be strong once 40 nautical miles out at sea).

If you absolutely cannot part with TikTok until you reach port but don't want to shell out an average of $20 a day to get online, there are multiple ways to do so for less. A cruise line's loyalty program often offers discounted or free internet as a perk for even low-tier members. Cunard is just one of these cruise lines, offering members complimentary credits to purchase Wi-Fi after just two voyages. Royal Caribbean offers free internet once you reach the higher tiers, while Princess Cruises also gifts free hours once you reach its Gold Tier.

You can also get 50MB for free on Disney Cruise Line if you sign up for its program before midnight on embarkation day — and, even if you forget to do so, you can send text-only iMessage and WhatsApp messages and chat with other passengers through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app, for free throughout your trip.

A better room

Getting a room upgrade isn't a surefire thing. Most of the time, it comes down to pure luck, just like getting bumped from economy to first class or getting a coffee on the house. If you want to boost your chances, it can pay to keep an eye on the prices of the higher-tier staterooms on the ship. A drop in prices typically suggests that a voyage is struggling to attract bookings, making your odds of being able to call and ask for an upgrade considerably better.

If these prices stay the same but the price of your room drops, it's also worth checking if your cruise line or travel agent offers a low price guarantee. You may be able to recuperate the price difference in credit, which you can use to buy an upgrade for yourself (which is essentially a free upgrade). Just be sure to check the terms and conditions; many cruise lines or agents will have a time limit on claiming this guarantee, typically giving you about 48 to 72 hours to scout out a lower price.

Booking your cruise during off-peak season (typically November, the first half of December, and January through April) can increase your chances of a free upgrade. Or, if you are willing to pay — but don't want to pay the full price — you can visit guest services after embarking to see if it's possible to snatch a nicer room for less.

Disney Cruise Line Special Offer for Disney+ Subscribers

Disney+ subscribers can take advantage of this awesome deal on cruise packages. When you book a cruise with 2 full-fare guests, you can add on an additional 2 full-fare guests for no cost . Yup, you read that right!

Disney Dream

This offer is great for families because essentially you can book 2 spots and bring 2 guests without paying the normal package pricing for them. If you need some extra room, you are able to book up to 2 staterooms with this deal, too, from standard interior views up to luxury Concierge rooms. You can pick from a variety of dates between now and April 2023 ; all you need is a valid Disney+ login!

Disney Dream stateroom

This deal includes select voyages on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy . Cruises set sail from a variety of cities, like San Diego and Miami , and travel to locales like Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico , and many more!

Dining seaside sounds nice

For a family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 children, trip costs can range from $6,000 to $20,000 depending on destination, length of the voyage, and your level of stateroom. Fare for one child ages 1-12 is usually a quarter less than the corresponding adult fare on the same voyage. For example, for one of their 5-night Bahamian cruises a single adult fare is $1,675 and the child fare for the same voyage is $1,094. For kids ages 13-18, their fares are slightly higher (on that same trip, their fare was $1,140). When you remove the cost of the kids’ packages, you can save over $2,000 on the low end and $5,000 on pricier packages in luxury staterooms!

Booking is open now for voyages from now through April 2023 . You can even redeem this deal on a cruise you’ve already booked as long as it qualifies! There are some blackout dates that apply, and they’re different depending on which ship you are sailing.

Disney Cruise Line Characters

Before booking, make sure you read the fine print! Remember, this offer is valid on select sailings on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy cruise ships from now until April 2023 . You can book a stateroom in categories 4A–11C but not VGT, OGT and IGT (these are the ones with restrictions on where you are placed onboard). The fares are waived for the 2 additional guests but does not include taxes and port fees ; these will cost around $89–$202 depending on the itinerary chosen.

Palo Brunch on the Disney Dream

Whoever the Disney+ subscriber booking the deal is must be at least 18 years old and a resident of either the United States or Canada . The Disney+ subscriber must be the primary guest on the reservation and must sail in one of the staterooms booked. In addition, 2 full-fare guests must stay in each stateroom.

Celebrity Cruises Is Having a Buy-one-get-one Sale Right Now — With Cruises Up to 75% Off

The sale must be booked by September 7.

Calling all cruisers: Celebrity Cruises has big savings on cruises across the world with a BOGO offer that includes up to 75 percent off a second guest.

The sale, which must be booked between Aug. 3 and Sept. 7, is available for nearly all of Celebrity’s sailings from Aug. 3 through April 30, 2025, the company shared with Travel + Leisure . The promotion is valid on cruises that are three nights or longer.

The sale is not available on Alaska Cruisetours or on cruises to the Galapagos.

Travelers who book their cruise with a nonrefundable deposit will receive 75 percent off the cruise fare for the second guest in the same stateroom. Travelers who book their cruise with a refundable deposit will receive 50 percent off the cruise fare for the second guest.

In addition, travelers who book the sale from Aug. 3 through Aug. 8 will also receive an onboard credit of $100 for inside or ocean view staterooms or a credit of $200 for veranda staterooms and above.

Onboard credits can be used to pay for anything from specialty dining or drinks packages to the spa, an onboard shopping spree, or even shore excursions.

Celebrity Cruises , which is part of the Royal Caribbean Group, recently became the latest cruise line to increase the cost of its automatic gratuities . The cruise line now automatically charges travelers in inside, ocean view, and veranda staterooms $18 per person per day, while guests in the Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms are automatically charged $18.50 per person per day.

The increase amounts to an additional 50 cents per person per day in each stateroom category.

Celebrity will also launch its newest ship, the Celebrity Ascent , later this year, becoming the second Celebrity ship to feature chef Daniel Boulud’s Le Voyage restaurant. The ship will also feature a plant-based tasting menu at the Eden Restaurant — complete with vegan wine pairings.
