The hour-long tours will take you behind the scenes into the VIP and press boxes and the teams’ dressing rooms.

The 55,000-capacity stadium is home ground for the soccer team Ajax Cape Town, and has been used for big pop concerts by the likes of Coldplay and U2, as well as a memorial service for Nelson Mandela.

Cape Town Stadium (Cape Town)

The Cape Town Stadium was opened in December 2009, ahead of South Africa hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup . The stadium replaced the former Green Point Stadium, which was adjacent to where the new stadium has been built.

The first match to be played at the stadium was a Cape Town derby between Ajax Cape Town and Santos on the 23rd January 2010, a 0-0 draw which Santos won 6-5 on penalties.

Ajax Cape Town began to play their home matches at the Cape Town Stadium ahead of the 2010-2011 season and continue to play the majority of their matches there, although they do also use Athlone Stadium. Cape Town City F.C. have also called Cape Town Stadium home since their formation in 2016, although they also play some matches at Athlone Stadium.

Five group matches were played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup , the Round of 16 match in which Spain defeated Portugal 1-0, Germany’s 4-0 quarter-final win over Argentina and the 3-2 semi-final win for the Netherlands over Uruguay.

Cape Town Stadium has also occasionally been played in the stadium, with the Stormers of Super Rugby playing a couple of fixtures there. There has been talk of the Stormers moving to the stadium permanently, however they continue to call Newlands Stadium home.

The South Africa Sevens tournament has been hosted at Cape Town Stadium since 2015, played in December the tournament is one of the opening rounds of the World Rugby Sevens Series .

A tennis match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal was played at the Cape Town Stadium on the 7th February 2020, called the Match in Africa . The event raised funds for the Roger Federer Foundation, to support education in rural South Africa.

Cape Town Stadium is located in the affluent suburb of Green Point in Cape Town, between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean and close to the popular tourist venue of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront about 3 kilometres from the city centre.

Airport –  Cape Town International Airport is the second busiest airport in South Africa and fourth busiest in the African continent. The airport has direct international connections to several destinations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the United States and domestic connections Johannesburg and Durban.

The A01 MyCiTi bus runs between Cape Town Civic Centre and the Airport, costing around R70 and running every 20 minutes.

Bus –  The MyCiTi bus runs regularly from Cape Town civic centre to the stadium, with the stadium having its own bus stop. Bus T01 runs between Dunoon, Table View, Civic Centre and finishing at the Waterfront. Fares cost around R.10 from the civic centre with a journey time of about 10 minutes.

Train – The closest station is Cape Town railway station in the centre of the city. The station is the main hub of the Metrorail Western Cape, for services in and around Cape Town. There are also Shosholoza Meyl intercity services daily to Johannesburg via Kimberley, and weekly services to a weekly service to Durban, Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg and East London.

From the station you can walk using the Fanwalk as below, or catch the T01 MyCiTi bus as above from Thibault Square.

Walk –  The Fanwalk is a legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup – a 2.6 kilometre walkway stretching from Cape Town Station to the stadium along pedestrianised historical streets and the bars and restaurants of Green Point.

History and description

Cape Town Stadium was built to serve as a playing venue for the 2010 World Cup . Construction of the stadium started in March 2007, and came at a cost of R$4.4 billion.

Cape Town Stadium officially opened on the 14th of December 2009 with a formal opening ceremony. The first match was played on 23 January 2010 between Ajax Cape Town and (South African) Santos FC.

For the 2010 World Cup an extra temporary 13,000 seats were installed that lifted capacity to 68,000. During the tournament, the stadium hosted five group matches, a round of 16 match, the quarter-final between Germany and Argentina (4-0), and the semi-final between the Netherlands and Uruguay (3-2).

After the tournament, Ajax Cape Town moved into the stadium. Ajax CT had previously been playing their matches at either the smaller Athlone Stadium or the similarly-sized Newlands Stadium.

How to get to Cape Town Stadium

Cape Town Stadium is located in the Green Point area at just a few hundred metres from the Atlantic Ocean and Table Bay coast.

The stadium lies a short walk away from the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town’s main entertainment and tourist area. Cape Town’s Central Business District is almost adjacent to the V&A Waterfront.

Ajax Cape Town Tickets

Tickets for Ajax Cape Town matches can be bought online , or in person via one of the Computicket sales outlets (e.g. the Shoprite and Checkers stores). Other outlets include the Cape Town Tourist Office and the V&A Waterfront info kiosk no2 (lower-level).

Ticket prices range from R$40.00 for a seat behind the goal to R$80.00 for a seat at the main stand. In general only seats for the lower tier are being sold.

Rugby fans can enjoy national and international tournaments such as the World Rugby Sevens Series. This tournament welcomes teams from some of the world’s biggest rugby nations, including Australia, England and New Zealand.

Check the stadium’s event schedule for shows by big names from the music industry. Previous performers to have taken to the stage here include Coldplay, Lionel Richie, Michael Buble and Rihanna.

Situated in Green Point, the stadium is about a 10-minute drive from Cape Town’s city center and a 20-minute walk from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Public buses stop close by and there’s a large on-site car park. While here, explore the surrounding Green Point Park where there are children’s playgrounds, exercise stations, a labyrinth and other recreational features.

Tours of Cape Town Stadium take place from Monday to Friday and a fee is applicable. Buy event tickets at the stadium’s ticket office or at authorized outlets.

Cape Town Stadium – stadium description

Construction of a new showcase stadium in Cape Town was prompted by FIFA's decision to grant 2010 World Cup to South Africa, first ever host from this continent. But as the city didn't need a venue of that size, it had numerous opponents from the very start.

German architects Von Gerkan, Marg und Partner were assigned to design it with biggest challenge being to fit a 70,000-capacity stadium in the selected location. On one hand Green Point district is a residential district without high-rise architecture, one the other there's see and Table Mountain in the background, depending on point of view. To make the stadium merge with its surroundings rather than spoil the unique landscape, simple and elegant form was selected, with facades covered by membrane.

Construction works started in March 2010, but suffered from numerous delays (caused by striking workers and human remains being found on site) and eventually contractors handed over the stadium at the last moment set by FIFA, half a year before the tournament.

Cape Town Stadium received massive criticism due to its capacity (after 2010 World Cup it mostly holds 55,000 with extra 15,000 seats being installed temporarily at the top tier). Despite several attempts, no tenant was found to hold games there continuously, neither in football, nor rugby. The fact that it's generating loss only adds to the initial frustration, especially that there was no venue for the 2010 tournament with higher budget.
