Introduction

A Carnival cruise offers travelers a unique opportunity to explore different destinations and experience a variety of activities both on board and on land. One of the highlights of any Carnival cruise is the chance to participate in exciting shore excursions. These guided tours and activities allow passengers to immerse themselves in the local culture, explore historic sites, embark on thrilling adventures, and create unforgettable memories.

Researching and booking the right Carnival cruise excursions can greatly enhance your vacation experience. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned veteran, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the process and make informed decisions. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of researching, booking, and managing Carnival cruise excursions, as well as provide some insider tips to help you make the most of your excursion experience.

Before we delve into the details, it’s worth mentioning that Carnival offers a wide range of excursion options tailored to suit various interests, activity levels, and budgets. From sightseeing tours to water sports, cultural immersions to adrenaline-pumping adventures, there’s something for everyone. Whether you prefer exploring ancient ruins in Mexico, snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, or zip-lining through rainforests in Alaska, Carnival has you covered.

So, if you’re ready to embark on a journey of discovery and adventure, let’s dive into the world of Carnival cruise excursions and find out how to make the most of your time on land.

Researching Carnival Cruise Excursions

When it comes to selecting the perfect Carnival cruise excursion, a little research can go a long way in ensuring you choose activities that align with your interests and preferences. Here are some steps to help you make an informed decision:

  • Review the Itinerary: Start by reviewing the itinerary of your cruise. Identify the ports of call and the available excursion options for each destination. Consider the duration, activities included, and any special requirements or restrictions.
  • Read Reviews: Take the time to read reviews and testimonials from fellow travelers who have experienced the excursions you are interested in. Websites like TripAdvisor and Cruise Critic provide valuable insights and ratings from previous participants.
  • Consider Your Preferences: Think about your interests and preferences. Are you a history buff, an adventure seeker, or someone who enjoys leisurely activities? Look for excursions that align with your passions and provide opportunities to explore the aspects of a destination that interest you the most.
  • Take Budget into Account: Consider your budget and the value you are getting for your money. Some excursions may be more costly than others, so weigh the benefits and experiences offered against the price.
  • Check for Physical Requirements: Keep in mind any physical requirements or restrictions associated with the excursions. Some activities may have age restrictions, health considerations, or require a certain level of fitness. Make sure you choose an excursion that is suitable for you and your fellow travelers.
  • Look for Unique Experiences: Consider opting for excursions that offer unique experiences not easily replicated elsewhere. Whether it’s swimming with dolphins, visiting a UNESCO World Heritage site, or embarking on a culinary tour, seek out activities that will make your vacation truly memorable.
  • Consult the Carnival Website: Visit the official Carnival website for detailed information on each excursion option. You’ll find descriptions, photos, itineraries, and pricing details to help you make an informed decision.

By taking the time to research and consider these factors, you can ensure that you choose the right Carnival cruise excursions that align with your interests and expectations. Remember, the goal is to create unforgettable experiences and make the most of your time on shore.

Booking Process for Carnival Cruise Excursions

Once you’ve researched and selected the Carnival cruise excursions that interest you, it’s time to book them. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the booking process:

  • Access your Carnival online account: Log in to your Carnival online account to access the booking platform. If you don’t have an account yet, you can easily create one on the Carnival website.
  • Select your cruise: Choose the specific cruise you will be taking from the list of available options.
  • Browse excursions: Navigate to the “Shore Excursions” or “Shore & Land Activities” section to explore the available excursions for each port of call. Use the search filters or browse through the categories to find the activities that interest you.
  • Add to cart: Once you find an excursion you’d like to book, click on it to view more details. If it meets your requirements, select the desired date, time, and quantity, then click the “Add to Cart” button.
  • Review and update: Review the details of your selected excursion in the shopping cart. Ensure that all the information, such as the date, time, and number of participants, is correct. Make any necessary updates or modifications before proceeding to checkout.
  • Provide payment details: Enter your payment information to complete the booking. Carnival accepts major credit cards as well as gift cards.
  • Confirm and receive confirmation: Once the payment is processed, you will receive a confirmation email with all the details of your booked excursion. Keep this email for reference and make note of any specific instructions provided.

It’s important to note that availability for excursions may be limited, especially for popular activities or those with limited capacity. To secure your preferred excursions, it’s advisable to book them as early as possible, ideally during the online check-in process or shortly after making your cruise reservation.

If you prefer to book your excursions in person rather than online, you can do so at the Shore Excursions desk on board. However, keep in mind that popular excursions may sell out quickly, so it’s still recommended to book in advance if possible.

By following these steps and taking advantage of early booking, you can ensure that you secure your desired Carnival cruise excursions and avoid any last-minute disappointments.

Managing Excursions on board

Once you’re on board your Carnival cruise ship, it’s important to be prepared and manage your excursions effectively. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time on shore:

  • Attend the excursion briefings: Pay attention to the excursion briefings provided on board. These sessions will give you important information about the logistics, meeting points, and any specific instructions for each excursion. Make note of the time, location, and any required documents or identification needed for the excursion.
  • Obtain necessary documents: Ensure that you have all the necessary documents for your excursions, such as tickets, identification, and any required medical or liability waivers. Keep them in a safe place and have them easily accessible when needed.
  • Follow the meeting instructions: Familiarize yourself with the meeting instructions provided for each excursion. These instructions will indicate the specific meeting point and the time you need to be there. It’s important to be punctual to ensure a smooth and timely departure.
  • Communicate with excursion staff: If you have any questions or concerns about your excursions, don’t hesitate to communicate with the excursion staff on board. They are there to assist you and provide any necessary information or support.
  • Keep track of time: Be mindful of the time allotted for each excursion. Pay attention to the return time and make sure you allow enough time to get back to the ship before its departure. Carnival takes passenger safety seriously and will not wait for latecomers.
  • Stay organized: Keep your belongings organized and only bring necessary items with you on excursions. Bring essentials like sunscreen, water, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. Consider using a small backpack or bag to carry your belongings. Be mindful of the space and weight restrictions set by the excursion organizers.
  • Respect local customs and regulations: When participating in excursions, remember that you are a guest in the destination’s community. Respect the local customs, practices, and regulations. Follow any instructions or guidelines provided by the excursion guides to ensure a positive and responsible experience.

By managing your excursions effectively and following these tips, you can have a seamless and enjoyable experience exploring each port of call on your Carnival cruise.

Tips for Maximizing Your Excursion Experience

Excursions are an integral part of the Carnival cruise experience, providing you with the opportunity to explore and engage with the destinations you visit. To make the most of your excursion experience, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Plan in advance: Research and plan your excursions ahead of time to ensure you have the widest selection of options. Consider your interests, activity levels, and budget while choosing the most appealing activities.
  • Balance relaxation and adventure: Choose a mix of relaxing and adventurous excursions to cater to different moods and preferences. This way, you can unwind on some days and push your limits on others.
  • Allow for flexibility: While planning is important, also allow for some flexibility in your itinerary. Unexpected opportunities and local recommendations may arise that could enhance your experience even more.
  • Bring the essentials: Pack essential items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, a water bottle, and comfortable walking shoes. Consider bringing a portable charger for your electronic devices as well.
  • Stay hydrated and nourished: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. If your excursion does not include meals, pack some snacks or plan to have a meal before or after the activity.
  • Immerse yourself in the local culture: Take the opportunity to learn about the local culture and traditions. Interact with the locals, try the regional cuisine, and embrace the unique experiences each destination has to offer.
  • Capture memories: Bring a camera or use your smartphone to capture the beautiful moments and breathtaking views during your excursions. Create lasting memories by documenting your experiences.
  • Respect the environment: Follow the principles of responsible tourism. Respect the natural surroundings, wildlife, and cultural heritage of each destination. Dispose of waste properly and leave only footprints behind.
  • Listen to your body: Be mindful of your physical limitations and health conditions when choosing excursions. Select activities that align with your abilities and consult with medical professionals if needed.
  • Stay informed about safety: Pay attention to safety instructions provided by the excursion guides. Follow their guidance and listen to any warnings regarding potential risks or hazards.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can maximize your excursion experience, make the most of your time on shore, and create lasting memories on your Carnival cruise.

Cool Cruiser

Am I correct that I am able to cancel a carnival shore excursion and receive a full refund as long as it is done 24 hrs or more prior to sailing?

Good question. I'd like to know that too. I would think you should be able to cancel it even on board at the shore excursion desk as long as it's before the excursion.

From Carnival's Website Directly:

In the event of a cruise booking cancellation before the 24 hour cut-off window, a full refund will automatically be posted to the original credit card used to pay for the order. If the designated contact person on a shore excursion order must cancel their cruise booking and the remaining guests who are sailing would like to retain the shore excursion order, a new contact person needs to be assigned. If a designated contact person cancels and does not reassign the responsibility, the associated shore excursion orders will automatically be cancelled and refunded.

Cancellations made once onboard are subject to a 25% cancellation charge. . A refund, less any applicable cancellation charges, will be applied to the designated contact person’s sail and sign account. Carnival will only offer shipboard credit for shore excursion order refunds, but note any credit not utilized by the end of your cruise will be refunded via check to the order’s designated contact person on the morning of debarkation. However, within 24 hours of arrival in port where the shore excursion is to occur, orders become non-refundable.

Ok but I won’t be cancelling my booking....just the shore excursion. The above implies I am cancelling the booking. Unless I read it wrong?

cruzerfromcruz

I recently cancelled a shore excursion for an upcoming cruise - 4 weeks out. I was given a full refund but it did take a few days to reflect on my credit card. Cancellation was immediate on the Carnival site.

Sorry copied wrong 1st paragraph:

Here you go:

For online cancellations of excursions or Carnival LIVE purchases that occur before the cut-off window (24 hours prior to sailing), a full refund will automatically be posted to the credit card that was used to pay for the shore excursion order, regardless of whether the person who made the purchase is sailing. Please allow 7-10 business days for the credit to post to your account. No changes can be made after the cut-off window until sailing and must be approved by the Shore Excursion Manager onboard. For cancellations made once onboard, any refunds will be made to the Sail and Sign account of the order’s contact person, not the original credit card used to secure the online order. This condition applies even in the event that shore excursions were purchased as a gift by someone who is not sailing.

Perfect - just wanted verification

I have canceled excursions once onboard for various reasons. They credit the amount to your onboard account. If you don't use it all you are issued a check after the cruise.

I agree I have always received a full refund as well. But according to the policy they "can" charge you 25% for canceling once onboard. Never had that happen, always just refunded money to my sail and sign account. Also, they say if you try to cancel 24 hours or less before the excursion you will receive no refund... so keep that in mind. Again, I have only tried to do this once and they did issue me a full refund anyhow (my mother was sick and could not go), but they do have the option according to their contract not to do so.

Excursion Terms & Conditions

Important information you should know..

GENERAL . In making bookings (including selling tickets) or otherwise promoting or making arrangements for Shore or Alaska Land Excursions (hereinafter referred to collectively as "Excursion" or "Excursions")– whether for air, land or local water transportation; tours; sports or any other recreational activities; shore accommodations or meals or for any service, facility or activity other than onboard Princess' cruise ships – Princess Cruise Lines, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Princess" or "Carrier") acts only as agent for the independent excursion operator supplying such excursions or services. Participation by a passenger in Excursions is conditioned upon such passenger's acceptance of the terms and conditions set forth in the Passage Contract provided to you at the time of booking, these terms and conditions which are referenced on the back of the Excursion Ticket and, depending on the activity, other documents which, among other things, expressly release Princess from any liability for such participation. Participation may also be subject to the independent Excursion operators' own terms and conditions.

Guests with disabilities should  email the Access Office   for assistance with accessible shore excursions. The Access Office works in partnership with our Shore Excursion department who will assist and advise you directly of your options. Please be advised that accessible shore excursions may not be available in some international ports.

EXCURSION TIMINGS . Departure times for each Excursion will be listed on princess.com in the Cruise Personalizer. For Shore Excursions, departure times will also be listed on the Shore Excursion Order Form, which you will receive onboard. These have been published according to information from our Excursion Operators, but are subject to change should the vessel's arrival time at any port be delayed, or the itinerary for any particular excursion be amended. Please note that the departure time shown will be the time the last Excursion vehicle leaves the pier or hotel. Passengers are requested to report to the specified departure location (either onboard ship or shoreside) at the designated time, as delay on your part can interfere with the pleasure of your fellow passengers.

EXCURSIONS WITH LIMITED PARTICIPATION . Shore Excursions may be purchased in advance of your cruise departure or onboard ship on a first-come, first served basis. Many of the Excursions have limited participation and booking requests will be processed in the order received. When excursions are fully subscribed, additional requests will be placed on a waiting list in the order received.

Alaska Land Excursions cannot be waitlisted but we actively request more space wherever possible from our excursion operators; if an excursion is sold out we encourage guests to revisit the Cruise Personalizer at a later date and they can also check for more availability at the tour desks in our Alaska ports.

PERSONAL POSSESSIONS . Coats, wraps, umbrellas, cameras, handbags, traveling bags and similar personal articles remain at all times through the Excursion under the passenger's custody and control. Be careful that you do not leave your possessions unattended at any time in the car or coach in which you are traveling.

PRICES . The prices for Excursions are subject to change without notice. Prices are confirmed at the time of booking. All quotations made include conveyance according to the itinerary and, where applicable, meals, refreshments, guides and entrance fees, unless otherwise stated. Children, other than infants in arms, will be charged full fare unless noted otherwise.

SHORE EXCURSION CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY . If you have booked a shore excursion you must cancel your booking prior to the scheduled closing time printed on the Shore Excursion Order Form found in your stateroom. No refunds will be made for any excursion unless notice of cancellation is given before the closing time. For excursions involving hotel accommodations, flights and private vehicles the closing time is 30 days prior to sailing and no refund will be made after this date. For excursions involving helicopter flights, you must cancel your booking by 12:00 p.m. on the day after embarkation. Carrier cannot cancel any excursion if it is past the closing time, nor will Carrier refund any excursion on which you choose not to go.

No refunds can be made on any excursion booking unless notice of cancellation is given before the closing time indicated on the booking form for the excursions involved. The times when bookings will close will be published onboard. In the event of any excursion being canceled for reasons beyond Princess’ control, a full refund will be made. If any excursion must be abandoned through force majeure or difficulties en route, the best possible refund will be arranged according to the circumstances.

If you have pre-paid a shore excursion and wish to cancel, the following will also apply:

If a pre-paid shore excursion is cancelled five  (5) days or more  prior to sailing a refund of the pre-paid amount will be made in one of the following ways:

If there is a shore excursion balance for the passenger named on the booking being cancelled then the pre-paid amount shall be applied to this balance.

  • If there is no shore excursion balance for the guest named on the reservation being cancelled then the pre-paid amount will be refunded to the credit card used to pre-pay the shore excursion. All refunds will be processed in due course, but delays should be anticipated. Please allow sufficient time for us to manage this process and know we are doing everything in our power to expedite where possible. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

If a pre-paid shore excursion is not cancelled within the above time frame or is cancelled during the voyage prior to the "Closing Time for Cancellation" listed for the particular excursion you wish to cancel, then the pre-paid amount will be refunded to the passenger named on the pre-paid reservation as a shipboard credit on this passenger’s shipboard folio. Please note this is done regardless of which passenger pre-paid for the shore excursion.

ALASKA LAND EXCURSION CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY.  Alaska Land Excursions, purchased through the Cruise Personalizer, may be cancelled up to three days prior to travel without any cancellation fees. Land Excursions cancelled prior to the cancellation deadline will be refunded to the credit card that you provided in the Cruise Personalizer to purchase your tours.  Excursions cancelled within three (3) days prior travel are subject to a 100% cancellation fee, unless the operator, at their sole discretion, is unable to operate the program due to unforeseen circumstances.  All sales of tours booked while on your land tour are considered final at the time of purchase and are 100% non-refundable except in the case of an operator approved cancellation.

TRANSPORTATION . Passengers should appreciate that standards of transport vary considerably throughout the world. Air-conditioned coaches are not available in many areas, and in some, local buses are the best available. Cars or taxis are also used at some ports where coach or bus transportation is not available or limited. Passengers wishing to travel with friends should all leave the ship together, as this will help the Excursion Staff to allocate them space in the same vehicle. For the comfort of all passengers, smoking is prohibited aboard all sightseeing vehicles.

WITHDRAWAL OF EXCURSIONS.  The Excursion Operator reserves the right to withdraw any excursion through lack of demand and to make any alterations that they may deem advisable for the comfort of the passengers, bearing in mind the convenience and best interest of each group.

ECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENT . It is our policy to maintain a positive and proactive position in relation to the environment. We realize that there is much work to be done to achieve our company goals. To this end we are continually striving to increase awareness of any environmental issues that are likely to affect any of the excursions we offer. We work closely with our local agents to convey any environmental messages in our shore excursion programs and therefore ask you to support us in our efforts by respecting the cultures, customs and environmental issues of the various destinations we visit.

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

"Ice Spectacular" show on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

Important Information to Know Before You Go

We like all our guests to have fun and are committed to providing you a great vacation. Please take a few moments to review some important information and policies that we ask all guests to be familiar with.

Liquor, Beverage & Prohibited Items Policies Guests are not allowed to bring hard liquor, beer or plastic/glass bottled beverages, (e.g., water, sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks) on board. Please review our Beverage Policy for more information. Large speakers/radios are also prohibited and will be confiscated and discarded. For safety reasons, public announcements must be heard by all guests and crew. Consequently, guests must use earphones when listening to music or watching shows/movies on personal devices in public spaces. Bluetooth, portable and wireless speakers are only permitted within your stateroom and must be used respectfully and at reasonable sound levels and times of day. For everyone's safety, there are certain prohibited items that should be left at home. Prior to sailing, please review our Prohibited Items List .

Personal Safety Although everyone's safety is our number one concern, all guests should take responsibility for their own personal safety. You're on a moving ship, so please hold on to handrails when walking around. When out on deck, be mindful of wet surfaces (especially by the pool area), always wear shoes/sandals and dry-off before enjoying any of our outdoor sports equipment.

The ship's officers are responsible for your safety and making sure everyone on board feels welcome under our "Have Fun. Be Safe." motto. Please direct any concerns to our Guest Services team so that those matters can be addressed promptly. The captain and our officers have the authority to enforce our policies and make decisions in order to provide for a fun and safe environment for all. Consistent with our commitment to safety, disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future.

Mobility Devices For the safety of all our guests and crew, mobility devices cannot be left in hallways or other public areas. Mobility devices must be stored in the guest's stateroom in a manner that does not block a clear and safe exit path from the stateroom. Unless you have reserved a fully accessible stateroom, mobility devices must be able to fit in a standard stateroom with a 22" entry doorway. Guests may be required to have their scooters sized at the time of check-in to ensure it fits in the stateroom. Scooters that do not fit in the stateroom will not be allowed on board. Should a guest be unable to make alternate arrangements to rent a smaller scooter or travel without it, he/she will be denied boarding and no compensation will be provided. Please review the Mobility Limitations Page for full details.

Items Overboard Carnival is committed to protecting the environment so that generations of cruisers can enjoy the ocean and the beautiful destinations we visit. Please closely follow guidelines for recycling, both on and off the ship, and be mindful of items going overboard when on open decks or balconies. We are obligated to report any items going overboard, intentionally or not, so please advise a crew member should that occur. Any willful or negligent act of discharging or releasing any unauthorized items overboard, without the express permission of the ship's staff may result in a $500 charge, per violation. Additionally, reimbursement cost of Carnival property will be posted on the guest's Sail & Sign ® account. Further, this may also result in the disembarkation of all guests in the stateroom. Please review our Items Overboard Policy .

Gratuities It is customary for guests to extend gratuities to the shipboard staff in appreciation for their hard work and exceptional service. To help you plan, we have provided recommended guidelines. Please visit the Service Gratuities page for more information.
