Asked Wednesday about his biggest fear during scenes outside the half-mile (828-meter) high Burj Khalifa, Cruise was quick with an answer: “Falling.”

The actor is in Dubai for the world premier of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” at the city’s annual film festival.

Cruise said filmmakers had to monitor temperatures on the spire’s sun-baked facade so he wouldn’t get burned. That wasn’t the only challenge. The actor says he didn’t anticipate the cross winds.

“I had to figure out, actually, how to fly,” he told reporters on the 124th floor observation area of the Burj Khalifa, which rises dozens of stories higher. “I had to figure out how to use my feet as a rudder … The first couple of times I was slamming into the building.”

Cruise said he spent months training on a four-story structure to practice his moves on the Burj. Most of the shots on the actual building were done in the shade to protect Cruise from high temperatures, as the facade heated up in sunlight.

His first thought as he launched outside the building for the first time? “I hope I don’t fall,” he said.

Cruise said his wife Katie Holmes is supportive and accustomed to him taking risks on stunts. But that didn’t make it any easier to watch.

Director Brad Bird said Holmes watched Cruise do a couple of takes on the side of the Burj before declaring: “OK, we’re done.”

“When you see it and he’s out there, it’s nerve-racking,” Bird said.

Cruise was joined in Dubai with co-stars Paula Patton, Simon Pegg and Anil Kapoor.

The film – the fourth installment in the “Mission” series – has been shown at selected “fan screenings” around the world, but Dubai marks the general audience premier.

"This movie will expose Dubai to a young audience and highlights a fun and adventurous aspect to the Emirate that we expect will appeal to tourists,'' a Dubai Tourism's Australia director Julie King said. "It showcases the scale of the world's tallest building and showcases the amazing architecture of the building and its surrounds.'' A new waxwork figure of Tom Cruise has been unveiled at Madame Tussauds Dubai.

The famous tourist attraction opened its doors last week and the Mission Impossible actor’s figure is set to be one of the top waxworks to visit alongside the Queen , Will Smith and Donald Trump .

Images of the figure were released on Monday showing the Cruise in a typical action-packed pose.

Dressed in a leather jacket, the figure is riding on a red motorbike which has apparently burst out of a scene behind.

Madame Tussauds Dubai officially opened its doors in the shadow of Bluewater’s Ain Dubai - or the world’s largest Ferris wheel - last week.

Visitors wander through a series of themed rooms political figures, action movie stars, Bollywood and more.

They will be able to walk past the Queen while her corgis bark in the background and watch Trump compose a typically outlandish tweet.

Meanwhile in the Fashion Zone they can “rub shoulders” with Victoria Beckham, Kylie Jenner and Cara Delevingne.

Last month, Tom Cruise’s new films Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 were delayed due to a spike in Covid cases in the US.

Studio Paramount said the Top Gun sequel will now arrive in May next year instead of November 2021.

Mission: Impossible 7 has been moved from its May 2022 planned opening to the following September.

Paramount also pushed back the release of comedy Jackass Forever from October to February.

The moves come as the US experiences another wave of Covid-19 driven by increasing cases of the more transmissible Delta variant.

The Hollywood actor, 59, is reprising his role as Ethan Hunt in the movie which also stars Hayley Atwell.

Cruise was seen in a dark suit and sunglasses at Birmingham New Street which was transformed to look like an airport for filming in August.

British Transport Police managed to capture Mr Cruise on camera, posting a picture of the star on the Birmingham force’s Twitter.

It wrote: “I promise you, this isn’t photoshopped. Sincerely, One very jealous colleague.”

Earlier that week, a family watched on in awe as Cruise landed by helicopter in their garden in Warwickshire.

Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is on the prowl for Kurt Hendricks, played by Michael Nyqvist , in search of some nuclear launch codes. This will prevent a devastating weapon from falling into the wrong hands.

The Planning Phase

Creating the stunt began with an initial concept from director Brad Bird , who directed both Ratatouille and The Incredibles . Ghost Protocol was Bird’s directorial debut in live-action cinema, and his vision for the Burj Khalifa sequence was ambitious: Tom Cruise had to climb the exterior of the skyscraper. As a filmmaker, Bird wanted to film the scene in real time, with IMAX cameras capturing every jolt of every slipped hand for maximum viewer impact.

Cruise insisted on performing his own stunts, a hallmark of his work across the Mission Impossible franchise, so he took on the challenging Burj Khalifa stunt, forgoing the easy route of using a dedicated stuntman or doubles. As one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Cruise has performed a growing list of extremely dangerous stunts for the majority of his career, often pushing the limits of what an actor will do, from free climbing to a high-speed helicopter chase in Fallout .

Given the height and potential safety concerns involved, the safety of the shoot was extremely important. To ensure the scene could be filmed without a hitch, a comprehensive and coordinated effort was needed from the production team. Dubai Studio City , the city’s official film authority, helmed by Jamal Al Sharif , worked closely with the studio to manage a myriad of logistics. This process involved obtaining special permits, coordinating with the architects and full-time engineers of Burj Khalifa, ensuring that all safety codes were met.

The logistics of shooting on the Burj Khalifa’s exterior required innovative expertise. To begin, the production team had to build a glass wall around the area of the building where the shot would be taken. Professional climbers were employed to identify strategic points on the building where the rigging could be attached. To protect the Burj Khalifa’s facade, they had to find a way to break windows for rigging, without causing damage to other parts of the building.

Once the areas of the building were identified and the glass wall was erected, the team faced the next obstacle: rigging up the harnesses and cables that would keep Cruise safe. The actor was attached to a safety harness, which was then fastened to the side of the building itself. A variety of tools were used in the process, including a thin wire, a piece of cable, and a pair of suction gloves. Every component of the setup was meticulously brake-tested and inspected for any potential faults before Cruise was attached.

Beyond the physical setup, the shot required careful planning and coordination. This required a multitude of repetitions to make the stunt appear as smooth and natural as possible on the big screen. It required substantial training and preparation, even for a Hollywood star like Tom Cruise.

Training and Preparation

Before the shot was taken, Cruise underwent extensive training with stuntman, Gregg Smrz . This training involved Cruise learning how to perform an Australian rappel , a descent technique used by climbers, and learning how to maintain his grip on the glass finger holds.

The ultimate goal was to allow Cruise to remain calm under pressure. Given the stakes, any minor mistake could have resulted in a grim call, so the stunt required his unwavering focus.

Shooting the Scene

The day of shooting brought with it the tension relief that the scene was finally underway. All the careful planning and rigorous training was about to be put to the test. Director Brad Bird and his crew were faced with numerous challenges during the shoot. One was to ensure that the live-action scene felt authentic. To do this, they employed real-time filming, using IMAX cameras to capture the action as it unfolded.

The scene, captured by the legendary cinematographer Robert Elswit , shows Cruise using a pair of special suction gloves to climb the building, holding on for dear life as he fights crosswinds and the relentless sun. Every frame of the sequence, from the wide shots showing the real dimensions of Burj Khalifa, to the close-ups that reveal the strain on Cruise’s face, adds to the impact of the scene.

One of the difficulties that arose during the shoot was the potential threat of a sandstorm. Given Dubai’s desert climate, a sandstorm could have disrupted the shooting schedule. Worse, it could pose a risk to Cruise and the rest of the crew working on the 130th floor of the skyscraper. However, with careful monitoring of weather conditions, they managed to work around this challenge and shoot the scene successfully.

Incorporating humor into this intense scene provided a touch of tension relief. Simon Pegg , who plays Benji Dunn in the movie, delivers a really funny line just before Cruise takes his jump of faith. Post-Production

After the scene was shot, the production team had to replace the windows that were broken during the shoot, making sure the Burj Khalifa returned to its original state. Lors d'un combat au couteau avec le méchant, ce dernier donne un coup de poignard qui s'arrête à une fraction de millimètres de l'œil de Tom Cruise. Contrairement aux apparences, la scène n'est pas truquée. Le couteau était retenu par un câble à la juste longueur ce qui permettait à Dougray Scott, interprète du méchant d'asséner son coup de couteau à pleine puissance. Tom Cruise arrives in Abu Dhabi for Mission: Impossible premiere

Tom Cruise has arrived in Abu Dhabi ahead of the Middle East premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

The star landed on Sunday, on the first flight into the new Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport . The terminal is featured in the newest instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, with one of its major stunts filmed on its dune-shaped curved roof. The interior of the terminal will also be revealed to the public for the first time in the film.

Cruise also unveiled the new livery on an Etihad Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner that features Mission: Impossible branding on its engines. The plane will carry the livery as it travels to destinations around the globe. Etihad is the official airline for the new film, which will be released in the UAE on July 9.

The Midfield Terminal has been decorated with Mission: Impossible branding to celebrate its starring role in the film. Several purpose-built sets were made for the film, including an Etihad First Class Lounge.

Some scenes, which required 21 days of preparation, were set in the Liwa Desert and filmed over the course of a week. They involved 762 cast, crew and suppliers.

The regional premiere of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is scheduled to take place on Monday at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. Several of the film’s talents are expected to attend, including Cruise, along with director Christopher McQuarrie, and stars Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff.

Pegg shared his experience of flying with Etihad on Instagram on Sunday.

His reel featured the Mission: Impossible- branded in-flight menu and snaps of a special cupcake and bag of salted popcorn both carrying the film’s name.

The actor finished the post with a video of him being driven through Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is not the first film in the franchise to have been shot in the UAE.

In 2018, a high-altitude skydiving scene was shot in Abu Dhabi for Mission: Impossible – Fallout , with support from the UAE military, Abu Dhabi Film Commission and twofour54 . Furthermore, key scenes in the 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol were filmed in Dubai, including the famous Burj Khalifa scene that features Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt climbing the exterior of the 828-metre structure.

Mission Impossible : les cascades de Tom Cruise ont fait l'histoire de la saga

Les cascades et Tom Cruise, une histoire qui dure. Et qu'endure depuis bientôt vingt ans le comédien américain. Alors que sort ce mercredi 12 août le cinquième volet de la franchise Mission Impossible 5 : Rogue Nation , l'acteur prouve une nouvelle fois qu'un film de la saga sans une cascade qui en met pleins les yeux ne serait pas vraiment un Mission Impossible digne de ce nom.

Dans la scène d'ouverture de ce nouvel épisode, l'acteur, qui refuse de se faire doubler, se retrouve accroché au fuselage extérieur d'un Airbus A400 qui est tout simplement en train de décoller. Cette séquence spectaculaire a réellement été tournée par le comédien, sans effets spéciaux. C'est même l'argument commercial majeur pour promouvoir le film avant même sa sortie.

Les producteurs promettent à chaque film des scènes d'action époustouflantes à vous couper le souffler. Une particularité qui doit beaucoup à la personnalité de son acteur principal, Tom Cruise, véritable tête brûlée et toujours partant pour repousser ses limites. Ce dernier explique notamment au site suisse Lematin : "Il n’y a rien de mieux pour le public que de voir le comédien faire ses cascades. Cela rend le rôle plus crédible à l’écran. Je déteste lorsque le héros enfile un casque noir sur une moto ou porte une casquette avec des lunettes noires. Cela ne trompe personne, on sait qu’une doublure remplace la star."

Des roches montagneuses de l'Utah à la tour de Dubaï

Dans la peau du célèbre agent Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise a offert aux spectateurs une scène culte par épisode de la saga. Tout commence en 1996 où, dans le premier épisode réalisé par Brian De Palma, l'acteur se retrouve harnaché par une corde alors qu'il doit infiltrer une chambre ultra-sécurisée. La scène, au suspens redoutable, marque les esprits. Elle sera la première d'une longue série pour la franchise.

Quatre ans plus tard, dans le second volet de la saga d'espionnage réalisée par John Woo, Tom Cruise fait une entrée fracassante, puisqu'on le retrouve tout simplement suspendu dans le vide, accroché aux roches montagneuses de l'Utah et occupé tranquillement à faire le balancier. Une cascade que l'acteur fera lui-même. La scène nécessitera plusieurs prises et donnera des sueurs froides à l'équipe du tournage. Pas un problème pour Tom Cruise...

Dans Mission Impossible 3 , l'acteur américain va une nouvelle fois donner de sa personne. Aussi bien dans les airs le long d'une tour en Chine que sur le sol où un camion citerne lui explose à la figure. J.J. Abrams, qui avait réalisé ce troisième volet, confiait d'ailleurs au sujet de son acteur: "Je crois que la chose la plus difficile sur un tournage de Mission: Impossible est d’essayer de convaincre Tom de ne pas littéralement pousser chaque cascade jusqu’à son point de rupture, potentiellement mortel, parce que sinon c’est exactement ce qu’il tentera…"

En 2011, la star hollywoodienne réalise (toujours sans doublure) une scène époustouflante dans les quatrièmes aventures de l'agent Ethan Hunt au cinéma. Lors d'une séquence spectaculaire de Mission : Impossible - Protocole Fantôme , l'acteur se mesure tout simplement à la plus hauteur du monde (828 mètres) à Dubaï. Tom Cruise escalade à mains nues cette tour de verre et "s'amuse" à la descendre en rappel sur plusieurs étages. Culte.

"There’s so much palpable energy in the air, and every day the city offers a new opportunity for creative fulfillment."

Despite the above, Dubai is sometimes shrouded by misconceptions, says Isabella Sullivan, founder and editor of Near+Far , a travel magazine for modern Middle East travelers. “The first misconception is that it’s all glossy, fake, and superficial, which couldn’t be further from the truth," she told Travel + Leisure . Another misconception is that it’s not a safe place to visit. On the contrary, Dean Hayter, travel product manager at Origin , says that “living in Dubai is the safest I have ever felt in any city."

In the past, Dubai Creek was part of the trade route connecting ports in the Arabian Gulf. Today, it's a beautiful way to see the city , and one of Hayter's top suggestions in Dubai. “Go to Dubai Creek before sunset and hire an abra (traditional wooden boat) for a private cruise," Hayter says. "When you're in the middle of the creek and the sky turns pink and the call to prayer fills the sky, it is magical.”

Go stargazing in the desert.

Fascinated by the night sky? Book a night safari with ecotourism company Platinum Heritage , which includes guidance from an astronomer and use of a telescope. “The sky is so dark that you get to see the most incredible blanket of stars," says Hayter. "If you're with an astronomer who can explain everything you're looking at, it's an amazing experience."

Play a round of golf.

Golf may not come to mind immediately when planning a vacation to the Middle East, but Dubai has several recognizable courses, including The Emirates Golf Club – Majlis Course , which is considered one of the best in the destination. Kelvin Cheung, chef partner at Jun’s and a Dubai resident for two years, suggests checking to see if any of your credit cards include free rounds of golf as a perk. Note that the best time to golf here is between November and March, when the weather is more comfortable.

Relax at a Dubai beach.

“Dubai has some great and uncrowded public beaches, where you can just enjoy the warm Arabian sea and sunshine at no cost,” says Sullivan. Try Kite Beach, since it also offers fantastic showers and bathrooms, plus a handful of food stands and coffee shops. For an extra treat, rent a Careem bike and cruise along Kite Beach’s lengthy boardwalk.

Enjoy the diverse dining scene.

Between the innovative design of its restaurants and the exceptional diversity of its culinary offerings, Dubai is a fantastic place for foodies. When planning your meals, consider chic restaurants like Amazonico , which takes you on a sensory journey through the Amazon; SEVA , a laid back, plant-based cafe within a wellness center; and Jun’s , a fusion restaurant with the Burj Khalifa skyscraper as its backdrop and where the chef aims to introduce himself to each table. “The city offers a wide range of flavors and textures, and truly pushes boundaries," says chef Cheung of Jun's. Visiting a world-class hotel in Dubai and enjoying its wellness offerings is a must. “Dubai has so many gorgeous hotels, and more often than not, you can purchase day passes to enjoy their facilities, including beaches, pools, and spas; some also have tennis and padel courts,” says Sullivan. "Apps like Privlee and Viya are great for tourists and residents; you pay a fee and have unlimited access to partner hotels, beach clubs, and gym facilities, so you can try somewhere new every day.”

Get lost in the streets of Old Dubai.

“I am probably at my happiest when wandering in Old Dubai’s streets, sikkas (alleys), and souks , which are swarming with activity," says Badran of Wander With Nada. "The labyrinthine souks are where everyone wants to sell you something; ‘Shakira’ and ‘professor’ are heard countless times, as vendors appear to have unanimously agreed it's the best way to capture customers’ attention. People duck into beckoning small shops where stools are commonplace, as is a cup of chai, and every transaction involves a lengthy bargaining debate. Sounds of carts mingle with scents of aromatic spices and musky perfume."

Explore Al Serkal Avenue.

Al Serkal Avenue is an industrial warehouse district that has been transformed into a creative hub. “It’s an oasis of art, community spaces, and all things quirky," says Badran. "To visit is to be transported to another world of art galleries, cozy cafes, boutique shops, and plenty more." The venue's galleries are open to the public at no cost, and it's fun to wander here even if you’re not an art buff.

Go on a desert adventure.

Tour through the desert in a 4x4, or go extreme off-roading in a dune buggy or on a quad bike with Expert Rangers . And if you want the full Arabian desert experience, book the package that includes sandboarding, camel riding, an Arab dinner, and entertainment.

He's well-known for doing all his own stunts, no matter how dangerous they are.

But action hero Tom Cruise may have gone to new heights both literally and figuratively yesterday during a scene for Mission Impossible IV in Dubai.

A figure was clearly perched on top of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai, which stands at 2,717 feet - and judging by his adrenaline junkie behaviour, it's very likely to be Cruise.

Cool as a cucumber: Cruise performs another hair-raising stunt perched barefoot at the very top of the Burj Khalifa

The last action hero: The Hollywood movie star is filming at the Burj Khalifa, which stands 2,717 feet tall

Reprising his Ethan Hunt superspy role, just a few days ago Cruise was running around the windows below the tower's Observation Deck, 124 floors above the ground during a chase scene.

At a press conference last week, Cruise informed attendees that he would be 'spending many days [and] many hours on the side of this building. I can't give details, but I will be up there.'

The actor's spokeswoman says: 'Tom has been preparing for the stunt for some time. He believes if he performs the stunts himself, the audience believes more in his character.'

Cruise apparently relived his Days of Thunder glory recently on a night out.

The actor took 75 of his Mission Impossible crew and castmates, including British actor Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner, out go-karting at the Dubai Kartdrome.

And he even used his character's name from the 1990 race car film.

A source says: 'Cruise used the name Cole Trickle, his character from Days as his moniker during the outing.'

Generous Cruise also treated the whole group to burgers and fries.

Meanwhile wife Katie Holmes is home in the U.S. with daughter Suri, filming new movie Jack and Jill with Adam Sandler.

The film tells the story of Jack who is forced to deal with his twin sister, Jill, when she visits for Thanksgiving, but then won't leave.

Katie plays Jack's wife in the movie, which also stars Al Pacino and Christie Brinkley.

She has also been filming a television movie about former American president John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie alongside Greg Kinnear.
