Channarayana Durga hiking start point

You must park your vehicle near the temple and walk to a water tank. Take a right from there.

hike start point and route start

A 50 m walk on the visible route will lead you to the hike’s entrance. This path is used frequently, so you will be able to identify it pretty quickly

steep stretch at the start of the trail

You’ll see yellow arrow marks when you move on the path and look closer to the ground. These act as guides throughout the trek. You can see one in the picture above. The yellow arrow mark is on the steep rocky terrain.

The initial climb is very steep, with an inclination of approximately 70° on the slippery granite. Be careful while placing your foot, and ensure your footing is firm before taking the next step. This terrain continues across 3 stretches on the path, from the fort to the temple and the lake. Don’t forget to follow the arrow until then.

first fort entrance en-route

After entering the fort entrance, climb the steps laid, and you’ll have a simpler stretch that lasts for about 500 m. You can see a few water storage ponds and enjoy the views from this point. Take a break if you need; click pictures and revitalize yourself.

view of the fort from the top of Channaraya Durga

The last flight of stairs will lead you to the barren, open land, where you can relax under the shadow of the massive fort walls. This is your final destination, so give yourself a pat on the back.

At The Channarayana Durga Summit:

last few steps to the fort summit

On reaching the top, climb a few stairs to get a panoramic view of the surrounding hills in the Tumkur district. From the summit, you can see the fort’s sharp descent (steepness) and even find a glimpse of the trail you just walked on.

Channarayana Durga fort walls

Walk along the walls of the fort and witness everything. Right from the settlements, lakes, hills, and more. Be sure to look out for the Siddara betta and Mathugiri fort. The best part is that after the long trek, when you’re pumped, you feel euphoric and accomplished.

Relax at the summit for some time and return on the same route.

About the place:  Channarayana Durga is a hill station near Tumkur. It is good place for trekking and rock climbing. The height is of about 1,188 mts. If forts or treasures that have evaded history's books are the kind of thing that make you salivate, then Channarayanadurga is where your next adventure lies. A mere hundred kilometers from the concrete of Bangalore city is the stolid granite of a hill fort that has borne witness to the rise and fall of several empires. Originally built by the lesser known Kings of Madhugiri, it was then passed into the hands of the shrewd Marathas. It became a sure bone of contention between the Marathas and the Mysore Wodeyars, who toyed with Channarayanadurga and passed her back and forth for many long years until the culmination of the Third Mysore War. This, quite possibly, offers basis to the hundreds of attempts made by locals as well as intrigued travelers who aimlessly hunt the hill down for any semblance of treasure that might have also escaped history's victors. Though not a single one of these attempts have met with any luck, their undying enthusiasm will keep them coming back for more. On the other hand, there are a unique breed of enthusiasts who try their luck at a different feat and also come back, hungering for more - they are trekkers. Now,  channarayanadurga may not have any treasure left in her chest, but the stuff she is made of sure offers just as fulfilling a challenge to any trekker that attempts this trail. By itself, the Channarayanadurga trek can be classified as moderate. The starting point of this trail begins from the quaint village that rolls right up to the foot of the hill. Almost immediately you begin scaling the bare rock face that presents a steep gradient. With absolutely no tree cover to offer you any shade, this part can be rather tiring.

Trekking in Channarayana Durga

Just a little over 100 km from the bustling streets of the city, lies the famed Channarayana Durga. Popularly is known as the "trekkers' hill" due to its moderately challenging trek route and spellbinding view. A hilltop fort of a former kingdom now turned into an unfamiliar sight for many, Channarayana Durga is situated in the Tumkur District of Karnataka.

The fort was erected in the 17th century by Channapa Gouda, a feudal ruler from Madhugiri. The fort was thereafter taken over by the Marathas. However, possession of the fort shifted multiple times between the Marathas and the Mysore Wodeyars in the following years. During the third Mysore war, the British acquired control of the fort and later abandoned it. This is a less explored trek that offers a serene and breathtaking view which makes it an ideal place for your weekend getaway.

Trekking at Channarayana Durga will take you back to the 17th century after seeing the fortress. The rocks along the way are pretty smooth and a rumour about hidden treasure amidst the hills makes the trail more interesting for trekkers. You can reach the summit in around half a day and explore the fortress. What makes this trek even more interesting and thrilling for adventurers is the absence of signboards from foothill to the top.

Kabbaladurga is another ideal destination for night trekking in Kanakapura, Ramanagar. It takes approximately four hours for a beginner to reach the hill summit, light bonfire, and set a camp to wait for the sunrise.

Bangalore is so much more than its vibrant city life. Amongst travellers and locals, the key draws of this urban hub seem to be its diverse shopping localities, rhythmic nightclubs and pubs with a laid-back ambience. However, if you love spending your days soaking up the sun in the midst of nature, trekking in Bangalore should be at the top of your list.

If you are a trekking connoisseur or simply a thrill-seeker, there are plenty of options for trekking in Bangalore. Make your way to the summit of spectacular rock formations that give you a birds-eye view of the city’s rich, vibrant landscape. Looking for a one-day trip out of the city? Trekking in Bangalore can be completed over the weekend with your loved ones. As a bonus, you could even pack a picnic and feast on home-made food in the enchanting outdoors.

Rocky hills, dense forests, pleasant weather - the trio makes a perfect combination for trekking.

Devarayanadurga Hill is rocky and surrounded by dense forests. You will spot many caves along your way and temples upon reaching the summit. The “Bhoga Narsimha" temple is dotted at the base of the hill whereas the “Yoga Narsimha” rests on the hilltop.

You will also spot idols of Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita on your way to the top. Namada Chilume, the spring that is believed to have served as a source of water for Ram, Lakshmana, and Sita, also flows from the Devarayanadurga Hills.

Difficulty: Medium

Best Time to Visit: October to May

Duration: One day

Distance from Bangalore: 72 km

Highlights: Namada Chilume, Sunrise View

Elevation: 3940 feet

Known as ‘honey hill’, Madhugiri is a single hill that grabs the rank of the second largest monolith in Asia. This makes it a little more challenging than other trekking places near Bangalore. At an elevation of 3,930 ft, this beautiful hill has the ruined temple of Gopalakrishna at the top.

A series of doorways leads to the hill and this adds a certain quaint charm to the monolith.

The highlight is a rock dome on which stands a fort. Although the climb can be steep, the summit rewards you with a lovely panoramic view of the green surroundings and nearby rock formations.

The difficulty level is moderate to difficult but you emerge at the peak feeling as though you have tested your limits and emerged victorious.

channarayana durga trek timings

Tadiandamol, also known as Thadiyandamol, is the highest peak in the Madikeri Taluk of the Kodagu district in Karnataka. After Mullayyanagiri and Kudremukha, it is Karnataka's third-highest point. In the valleys of the range, there are lovely shola forests that spread out in thick green tufts. It is a 15 km journey to the peak of Tandiandamol.

Green and lush, Tadiandamol draws you with promises of a spectacular view from its summit. With tall trees, wildlife that gambols happily in their natural habitat and a beautiful sunset at its top, this famous hill is a must visit for trekking enthusiasts.

Although there are two routes to reach the Tadiandamol hills, the Honey Valley route is the most common and easiest. The Honey Valley Road is the perfect way to see the unique beauty of the Tadiandamol hills.

The Tadiandamol trek begins from Kakkabe, which can be reached from Madikeri or Virajpet. Kakkabe is about 35-40 kilometers from Madikeri. The initial point is 4 kilometers away from Kakkabe, and the nearby landmark to the point is Nalakanad Palace. The area is densely forested, with streams running through it.

Also known as Kalavara Durga, Skandagiri is famous for the spectacular sunrise and sunset views from its summit that can be seen after trekking through strenuous trails. A popular spot for night trekking in Bangalore, Skandagiri is located approximately 61 kilometres away from the urban hub. It is one of the most visited spots for trekking in Bangalore, particularly for the younger crowd. The trek starts at the base of Papagni Temple and it has two routes to reach the summit. The ruins of Tipu Sultan's Fort rest at the mountain top along with several caves across the trail. Many people prefer bird watching and pitching a tent to camp after reaching the hilltop.

Skandagiri is famous for catching the sunrise from the hilltop but we only recommend night trekking with an experienced guide. The day and night treks were banned a few years ago and you need to take permission for this trek before making your plans.

Antharagange, is a peak in the Shathashrunga mountain range in Karnataka's Kolar district. In Kannada, Anthara Gange means 'Deep Stream' or 'Inner Stream.' It is approximately two miles from Kolar and 70 kilometers from Bangalore. Antharagange is well-known for its Sri Kashi Vishweshwara temple, also known as Kashi of the South. Lord Shiva is the patron of the temple. A pond in the temple receives a constant supply of groundwater from the mouth of a Basava (stone bull). Drinking water from the pond is thought to cure a variety of illnesses.

Trekking in Antharagange caves is moderate with a steep and narrow path that leads behind the Visheshwara Temple to the top of the mountain.  The caves are about 3-4 kilometers from the temple. After a visit to the temple, exploring these mysterious caves adds to your trekking experience as it unveils the hidden secrets of this enchanting hill. Trekking through the caves at night is very popular as well as pitching a tent at the foothills and sleeping under the sky.

If you are passionate about challenging yourself through strenuous treks, pack your bags for Kodachadri the next time you plan an adventure trip. It is a scenic hilly region full of dense forests and jasmine plants, refreshing the air with a lovely fragrance. The trekking trail is quite challenging and gives you occasional views of rustic Indian huts, agricultural grasslands, small streams and a few waterfalls.

The trek starts at the foothill and gets more difficult with altitude as the rocks get sharp and slippery. The Mookambika temple rests at the top of the hill, attracting a large number of pilgrims every year.

Located just 60 km west of Bengaluru, Savandurga (Fort of Death) is considered to be amongst the largest monoliths in Asia. It has the perfect beginner trekking trails that one needs to build confidence in trekking.

Savandurga comprises of two hills known as the Billigudda and the Karigudda that attract a large number of pilgrims annually. Billigudda means white hill in Kannada while Karigudda means black hill. Named by the Magadi ruler, Kempegowda, these hills were considered unconquerable until the British did so in 1791 during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. The mantapa of the Nandi at the top marks the end of the trek.

Trekking across the Biligudda trail is more challenging than the Karigudda trail. Therefore, you can decide to trek between the two based upon your prior experience of trekking. The initial stretch is on bare rock with small boulders, but the way is quite evident. As you gain height, the Arkavati River, Manchanabele dam and the forests make for a spectacular vista. The terrain is mostly granite so it’s better to start early and attempt to complete the trek during the winter period.

If you’re a trekking enthusiast that loves to test their limits, Savandurga should be on your list, not just for its history but for the beauty that awaits you at the peak.

Located just 60 km North of Bangalore, Makalidurga is a beautiful hill-station with the ruins of a fort at its summit. The trail is moderate with a rocky terrain, wild shrubs and dense vegetation, all of which makes it a delight for trekking enthusiasts. The best part of this trek is that it fits into a one day expedition.

Starting from a temple of Lord Krishna (Muthurayaswamy Temple), this trail is very photogenic as it winds its way up the hill covered with forests and you get a beautiful view of the lake nearby. You’ll also glimpse the odd train chugging by next to the hill. As there are no shops or stalls at the base of the hike, make sure you carry enough food and water for this spectacular trail.

The starting point of the trail starts from a small temple in the village Channarayana Durga. The trek trail can be divided into 3 parts with lots of surprises awaiting you along the trail. The start of the trek is a little challenging with a moderately steep climb over the rock surface where you need to watch your step and keep climbing towards your left only to reach a fairly flat surface with a mandapa-like structure at one end. The structure with the blue background and Tumkur district stretched far wide behind gives it a live picture frame moment with slow wind flowing through your ears. You can rest here for a while and capture the moment before you start ascending further. As you start to scale the rock surface further to your right, you think of the trail to be uninteresting, but to your surprise, you will see flowers bobbing their heads to the cool breeze. Little do you know what lies ahead!

First Milestone for a relaxing view. After 15 – 20 minutes towards the top, you will reach the first stone build entrance and the second stage of the fort – ‘The lost paradise’. After entering the entrance, the top part of the fort is now more visible, stretched wide to wonder where the entrance of the fort might be. Mesmerized by the huge structure in front of your eyes, you walk further to the right and your surprise there’s a calm lake right amidst the small fort ruins reflecting the huge structure of the fort beautifully in the water. This calls for a break! Here you can laze around by the lakeside and immerse your feet in the cold water to relax. You can site a few temples along the trail and there’s one right near the lake. The small ruins of the fort and temples and architectural structures of the mantapas remind us of the glory it held in the past. The trail is not much explored and you can expect guests while lazing around the water to accompany you. The notorious monkeys are fun to watch and it's best to maintain a distance from them. During the rainy season, the fortress becomes a little difficult to climb as the rocks turn slippery and would require good technical skills for one to successfully make it to the top.

Channarayana Durga is a picturesque place and photo lovers can have a lot of creative ideas for a shoot.

After the lake, it’s now a final ascend via the ruins. The trail goes around the lake through the trees and bushes surrounding the lake. A left from the huge wall and then right through the stone entrance will take you the right way to the top of the fort, avoid taking a right as the route is slightly challenging with huge grasses and the trail being unclear with rocks in between.

This leads you to the final stage- ‘The top’. The beautiful views and the hills nearby the field keep us company as we make our way to the top. The villages now appear as small dots as you gain further altitude. You start stepping on the grass fields now your eyes towards the top main entrance and wait, you might have company! If you are lucky enough you might find a rabbit hopping around the green field going its way. We were surprised to see one at the top. The main entrance of the fort has steps laid in the front. You climb the steps and victoriously enter the fort to explore the most amazing and breathtaking views!  After spending enough time on the top, carefully descend the fort having fun along the way to reach back to Bangalore.

The last entrance to the top of the fort. 360 view from the top. After the descent, you can stop at the Mandagiri Betta in Tumkur, also known as Basadi Betta. It is a hillock that houses several Jain temples and is surrounded by boulders of many shapes and sizes. This is famous for a panoramic view of Pandithanahalli village, and is particularly known for the beautiful architecture, the pinch-shaped 81 feet tall Guru Mandir, where the pinch is a peacock feather fan for the uninitiated.  So, don’t keep your enthusiasm waiting. Book with us right away for this adventurous escape. If you want to see what other weekend treks we offer, check out our upcoming Bangalore treks!
