14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

club in tours

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Discovering Group Tours for Solo Travelers

European tours for singles

If you plan to travel alone, there are factors to consider when searching for a group tour. There’s an abundance of tours and travel groups for singles. Ask yourself the below questions to help narrow down your options and determine a tour that’s best suited for you.

When do you intend to travel?

When looking at a specific group tour, you might come across a list of intended departure dates and an itinerary of the destinations you will visit. Tour companies generally have pre-set departure dates for when a tour will take place. These can be far ahead, or closer to the current date. As the tour dates and itinerary are typically pre-arranged, this is something to be mindful of when planning your vacation, so that you can choose a date that works best for your schedule.

How long would you like to travel for?

Many tours range from 8 to 14 days long, as they account for travel time between cities, and allow you to experience the highlights of the cities visited. While it depends on the tour, many itineraries will typically visit 3 to 5 different destinations within that time frame. For certain experiences, you can also find tours as short as 5 days, tours as long as 24 days, and everything else in-between.

What type of activities interest you?

Tour companies typically offer various types of tours. Perhaps you would like to spend your days hiking in the forest, explore the food and culture of a country, or uncover historic landmarks in a city. A common theme offered is sightseeing-based tours. These tours transport you to a brand-new city or country and allow you to visit the notable attractions and top highlights. They are broad and generally appeal to most people.

There are also more specific tour themes for certain interests. For example, there are adventure tours that take you outdoors, culinary trips, and sailing or cruise expeditions. While you’ll often find single travelers in most groups, there’s also tours that specifically offer group trips for solo travelers.

Where do you want to go?

Is there a specific destination that you already have in mind? If not, flip through a travel magazine for ideas, or see our Solo Trip Guide  for inspiration. Tour companies will generally plan an itinerary that gives you the opportunity to visit various top cities within the same country or region. For those interested in group travel for singles, there’s a wide array of destinations to contemplate.

Try browsing through tour listings to see what piques your interest. Often, you’ll be able to see a group tour’s itinerary on the tour listing page, which displays the scheduled cities and the activities planned for each day.

Golf Clash Walkthrough Tour 1-11 (With Best Clubs For Every Tour)

18.9k Views

golf clash walkthrough all tours

I wanted to write this walkthrough to help you improve your game, no matter what tour you’re currently in Golf Clash.

For each tour you will find the best clubs to use and some additional details to every course that is in that tour – I linked also a full walkthrough for every single hole and how to play it perfectly.

Best Clubs For Every Tour

Here you will find a detailed guide for the clubs that you should focus on in every single tour that will work best for the courses you find in these tours.

In each tour section you will also find a link to a full walkthrough for all courses and holes in that tour with the best ways to play them 🙂

Important! Do NOT rush tours unless you have the required bankroll for them! Read here how to never get broke in Golf Clash

Actually, play with whatever you get early in the game – opponents are bad and there’s not much to recommend someone who hasn’t that much choices 😉

Just grind your way through these tours and enjoy some horrible opponents that fail miserably ????

Tour 3 (Asia Pacific)

golf clash tour 3 guide

Tour 3 is slowly giving you more options when it comes to clubs but don’t waste any Coins early in the game just you pull some Big Toppers or Grim Reapers (happens pretty often).

The clubs you should focus on are the Extra Mile, the Big Dawg, goliath and also Malibu – they will also help you in later tours so keep your coins together and ignore the other clubs for now until you’ve beaten Tour 3.

I have here a full walkthrough for Tour 3 that will show you how to play every hole – check it out here (coming soon) .

Tour 4 (6 Star Hotel)

golf clash tour 4 guide

In Tour 4 it starts to get more difficult in the game for the first time when your opponents start to appear to even think about what they’re doing. Anyway, not really that hard to beat and get the bankroll to move on…

You should either use the Viper or the Big Dawg as wood and it’s worth upgrading at least one of them because they will be useful in many later tours as well. Do not upgrade both simultaneously! This will exceed your Coins, I can promise you that. Some courses are pretty long in Tour 4 and I would prefer the Big Dawg more unless you have more progress on the Viper already.

The Goliath is the long iron of your choice and you can catch up from Tour 3 here and keep it without looking left and right.

Ignore the Hammerhead (for now) and the Down-In-One that you very likely will get, they are not worth any coins right now, still continue using either the Thorn or the Dart, whatever suits you better.

You will get the razor in the next tour so keep using the Roughcutter now but don’t upgrade it too much only if you feel you have big problems with it

Last but not least in this walkthrough, keep the Malibu and upgrade it. It’s the second-best sand wedge in the game and the only better one (Spitfire) is not available for many tours.

Find a full walkthrough for Tour 4 that will show you how to play every hole here as well – check it out here (coming soon) .

Tour 5 (World Links)

golf clash tour 5 guide

In Tour 5 you should still stick with your Extra Mile and it will be finde for most courses.

Now it’s also time to work on upgrading your Hammerhead that wasn’t necessary earlier but here you will see a lot of advantage when you do it while walking through this tour.

If you’re looking for a short iron I’d recommend you to use the Hornet, it will work best in this tour. Rough iron is not that important and I barely use it, but the Razor is better due to higher accuracy .

The best sand wedge will still be the Malibu.

Find a full walkthrough for Tour 4 that will show you how to play every hole here as well – check it out here .

Tour 6 (U.S. Champions)

golf clash tour 6 guide

In Tour 6 you really want to level up your Big Dawg club because you can use it for about 80% of all holes so every additional level will help you out a lot. The reason is simple, you have very nice power compared. If you struggle with accuracy , what I know many do, you might want to switch to the Backbone or Saturn. But that depends on how you play and feel when playing this tour.

For the long drives you should still stick with the Extra Mile that you should have upgraded fairly well at this point.

Additionally, you also want to work on upgrading your Backbone because this long iron will also come in handy in many situations – with this setup you’re well-prepped for 90% of all holes and situations.

I have here a full guide for Tour 6 that will show you how to play every hole – check it out here .

Tour 7 (Tropic Kings)

golf clash tour 7

You can still stick with the Extra Mile and if you switched to the Backbone in Tour 6 you can also keep it, otherwise you should work on upgrading it as it will get more neccessary in this tour.

The Big Dawg served well so far but the lack of backspin makes it difficult to use in Tour 7 and you will start seeing more and more shootouts to settle the draw where the lack of backspin and not the best accuracy can kill your victory.

The other clubs from the previous tour are still fine to use.

I have here a full guide for Tour 7 that will show you how to play every hole – check it out here .

Tour 8 (Mountain Tour)

golf clash tour 8 guide

I wouldn’t recommend any different clubs than in Tour 7 but keep them upgraded, especially the Extra Mile as every yard counts.

You’ll encounter shootouts basically every single hole unless you or your opponent does some crazy things and they will decide how well you do in this tour.

Don’t feel like playing bad about it, it’s just how Tour 8 works right now and keep up. If you feel like getting stressed take a break and continue later 🙂

I have here a full walkthrough on Tour 8 that will show you how to play every hole – check it out here .

Tour 9 (Platinum Resort)

golf clash tour 9 guide

If you got the Apocalypse by now you can switch over to ut (Level 2+), otherwise keep on using the Extra Mile Level 7. Also the Backbone is one important club to use and have upgraded as far as you can. Both will make sure that you can win the shootouts that still are very common in Tour 8.

I used the Sniper here as wood and kept on using Malibu as sand wedge.

Don’t get confused that the recommendations get shorter now, we’re heading to the final tours and there’s not that much changing anymore rather than upgrading your clubs properly.

This is also a tour when you need to use either Navigators or Quasars as balls ! (Read here my ball guide )

Find a full walkthrough for Tour 9 that will show you how to play every hole here as well – check it out here .

Tour 10 (Tour Oceania)

golf clash tour 10 guide

If you can upgrade The Apocalypse to Level 3 you should choose that, otherwise you can use the Extra Mile Level 7 – they are both useful.

Having the Sniper also well-upgraded is really useful for shootouts and I’d switch the Backbone to the Goliath, but only if you can get it to Level 6, otherwise you should run with the Backbone at Level 10

The malibu should still be the best sand wedge you can use (I’m really a fan of it as you can see…) 🙂

Here you should try to get the Apocalypse to Level 5 as fast as possible, you will get wrecked by maxed Apocalypses often times and that’s the only way to hold up – but you’re in the highest tour and at the end of the walkthrough, so waht do you expect? 😉

Upgrade the recommended clubs from Tour 10 as much as you can and prepare for soem really strong and maxed player until you can max out yourself.

Don’t make the mistake and go broke here! Proper bankroll management is so super important or you will find yourself grinding Tour 5-8 for a long time again!

Kind words from our Customers

I had an incredible time on the horseback tour in Bulgaria from this website. The experience exceeded all my expectations. The tour took us through the stunning Bulgarian countryside, where we were able to explore the beautiful landscapes and have a breath of fresh air. Many thanks to Horse Tours Club and the provider! Looking forward to new tours with you:)

This tour in Serbia was a good value for money. It was well-organized and the local guide was really friendly, making sure that we were comfortable and safe throughout the trip. We travelled through traditional villages and got to experience the local culture firsthand. If you’re planning a trip to Serbia, you should definitely book this tour.

I had a pleasure of going on a multi-day horse tour in Iceland, and I should say it was a never-to-forget journey. The tour was organized by a local company, and their attention to detail and customer service was exceptional.

I’ve recently been on a horse tour in the beautiful countryside in Tuscany, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Now I can’t think of a better way to explore Italy, than on a horse back. Thank you for this great opportunity to get in touch with the nature, history and culture of the area.

Amazing! That was one of the best vacations in my life! We spent 8 unforgettable days on horseback, riding through Morocco. The scenery was breathtaking! Our guides told us a lot of local legends and stories, and shared some interesting facts about native animals and plants. I would highly recommend this tour for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

Masters 2024: Prize money payouts at Augusta National

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/4/masters-flag-grandstand-2022.jpg

Adam Glanzman

It says something about what it means to compete in the Masters that players aren’t thinking twice about the fact they have no idea what the prize money payouts will be this week at Augusta National before teeing off in the opening round. Club officials won't officially announce the 2024 purse until after a cut is made in the tournament. Mind you, the chance to win a green jacket, a spot in the Champions Locker Room and a lifetime exemption into the major are enough reward to make it worth everybody’s while to play.

That said, there is a little uncertainty as to what the prize money payout will be when it is formally announced. A year ago, Masters officials increased the overall purse to $18 million, a $3 million jump from 2022 and $6 million more than in 2021. But that overall number still lags behind the $20 million purses offered in the PGA Tour’s new signature events as well as the $20 million paydays being played for individually on the LIV Golf circuit.

RELATED: A brief history of the Masters prize money payout

Currently, the top paying men’s major championship is the U.S. Open, with the USGA also paying $20 million in prize money during last year’s championship at LACC. The PGA Championship bumped up its purse last year at Oak Hill to $17.5 million and the Open Championship paid $16.5 million at Royal Liverpool in 2023. All the majors are currently dwarfed by the Players Championship, which paid out $25 million in March with winner Scottie Scheffler earning $4.5 million.

Below is that payouts from the 2023 Masters. We’ll update this post when the 2024 Masters prize money payouts are official.

Petersburg Garden Club walking tour, six stops: Beautiful gardens, homes, floral designs

Cockade city garden club, fundraisers benefit historic blandford cemetery, geranium sale, luncheon, fashion show by all manor of things: purchase plants in advance for favorite color.

club in tours

VIRGINIA — The 2024 Historic Garden Week in Virginia is just around the bed of peonies. Do not wait until the last minute to purchase tickets for the Garden Club of Virginia's 91st annual fundraiser. Ticket holders may enjoy hospitality extended by Garden Club of Virginia members at beautiful private homes, gardens and historic properties throughout the state April 20-27.

Poplar Lawn is one of Petersburg’s grandest neighborhoods and is the location of the Petersburg Garden Club's spring tour. To make it look fabulous, a lot of dedicated citizens help maintain the park, the neighborhood’s center. Petersburg Garden Club, Historic Poplar Lawn Association, Historic Petersburg Foundation [HPF] collaborated to prepare for the big event. Some exhibitors include Petersburg Home for Ladies, Boulevard Flowers, Bartlett Trees, Wilcox Watershed Conservancy and others.

The Caretaker's Cottage at Poplar Lawn Park has recently been spruced up. The Foundation owns the structure built in the 1880s which was occupied by Dick Bragg, its caretaker. It was deeded to the HPF in 1983. In 2021, Keith and Christy Wade, ghost hunters, determined through their paranormal investigation that the historic cottage is haunted . It has been used to store park maintenance tools and was even Ward 2's voting precinct at one point. HPF keeps a close watch on it and initiates preservation efforts as needed for the tiny slice of Petersburg history.

Weather permitting, related activities will be held in the park including a complimentary tea from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. as well as a landscape architecture drawings and discussion by the Historic Poplar Lawn Association about current renovations, learn about the history of the area, view horticulture displays by area nurseries and tree experts. Ticket holders may enjoy an art and train interpretation created with flowers at Noe’s Art Studio and Train Museum located across the street from the park formerly named Central Park.

Most showcased properties are within easy walking distance of each other. On South Sycamore Street, the Ragland Mansion, a 10,000-square-foot antebellum Italianate residence erected in 1856, will serve as tour headquarters and provide facilities to ticket holders. A short drive from the park is Centre Hill mansion, a Garden Club of Virginia restoration site, which will welcome visitors.

The Petersburg tour is on Tuesday, April 23 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The chairs this year are Amanda Lupold and Lucia Malon. "Petersburg Garden Club is grateful for the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, and everyone's hard work, especially the owners of these beautiful homes," Lupold said. This year's sponsors are Bank of Southside Virginia, WP Poirier, Owen Printing and Petersburg Company Tours.

Historic Garden Week: Petersburg Garden Club

The walking tour this year in Petersburg includes six stops along the way. Tickets allow access to the following properties:

  • Ragland Mansion, 205 S. Sycamore Street
  • Augustus Wright House, 241 Sycamore Street: Brick Victorian Empire-Italianate-style home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, first time featured during Historic Garden Week
  • Syme-Pollard House, 239 South Adams Street
  • Noe Art Studio & Train Museum, 109 Central Park
  • Poplar Lawn Historic Park, 351 South Sycamore Street
  • Trinity Methodist Church, 215 South Sycamore Street

According to Malon, the Branch House at 18 Marshall Street, originally on the tour, will not be included due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the Club's control.

Visitors are encouraged to visit the following nearby places of interest: Centre Hill Museum at 1 Centre Hill Avenue in Petersburg and Blandford Church Museum at 111 Rochelle Lane which has a Confederate memorial with 15 Louis Comfort Tiffany stained-glass windows.

Cockade City Garden Club raises funds for historic Blandford Cemetery

A luncheon sponsored by the Cockade City Garden Club will be served at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. The delicious affair which benefits the historic Blandford Cemetery includes a continuous fashion show by Weston Manor's All Manor of Things boutique and gift shop, a geranium sale and marketplace shopping hosted by the Cockade City Garden Club.

The meal includes chicken salad, three-bean salad, fruited Jell-O salad, a roll, a beverage and a slice of cake for dessert. Before or after you dine, tour the church sanctuary's mid-19th century Tiffany-style stained glass windows.

Luncheon tickets are $14 each and may be purchased in advance at Palmore Decorating Center at 1927 S. Sycamore Street in Petersburg, Boulevard Flower Gardens at 2120 Ruffin Mill Road in Chesterfield and Ms Hairstyling at 3924 S. Crater Road in Petersburg or from Cockade City Garden Club members.

Geraniums which cost $6.75 may be ordered in advance to request a certain color. Contact Linda Wynne via [email protected] or 804-399-5258 to purchase geraniums and/or luncheon tickets. Both may be purchased on the day of the event as well.

Garden Club of Virginia: 91st Historic Garden Week

This beloved statewide event will include 30 unique tours organized and hosted by 48 member clubs located from the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley all the way to the beaches of Tidewater. Historic Garden Week has been held annually since 1929 except for a period during World War II and in 2020 during the pandemic. Members take pride in sharing warm hospitality and beautiful flower arrangements through this popular springtime tradition.

Historic Garden Week 2024 Guidebooks are available for free at Palmore Decorating Center, Boulevard Flowers at Ruffin Mill and in Petersburg at The Oak Antique Mall while supplies last. The Petersburg tour information can be found on pages 206-208. To view the guidebook online and to purchase tickets , $40 each until April 22 and $50 on the day of the tour, visit VAGardenWeek.org where you will find a tour map. Proceeds fund the restoration of historic public gardens and landscapes in Virginia. AUGUSTA, Ga. — Westchester’s Cameron Young, who grew up playing Sleepy Hollow Country Club, is on the cusp of contention to win not only his first career PGA Tour event, but his first major championship.

Young stands at 1-under par entering the final 36 holes, five shots behind the lead.

But he could have been a lot closer.

Young, who shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round, had his score as low as 5-under through eight holes of his second round, but gave four shots back in his final 11 holes.

Cameron Young gave four shots back across his final 11 holes during the second round Friday.

“The wind is all over the place and nowhere at all, and it’s just trying to take the best guess as you can,” Young said of the blustery conditions .

Asked if he’s ever had to guess on the wind as often as he did Friday, he said, “Very few times. It’s very windy and the trees are all 190,000 feet tall.”

Cameron Young said the wind was "all over the place and nowhere at all" during the second round of the Masters.

England’s Tyrrell Hatton, not known for his patience, was irked at the slow play of the group in front of him (Patrick Reed, Sungjae Im and Kurt Kitayama) for the past two rounds.

“Yeah, the lads in front have been so slow,” Hatton said. “It’s pretty poor from the officials that it took 32 holes to put them on the clock. [On Thursday], they’d lost a hole and a half, and then they weren’t any better even [Friday] morning. Then for the second round they were just brutal.

“It was really hard to get a rhythm, so it was disappointing that it took 32 holes for an official to go, ‘Oh, we’ve put the group in front on the clock.’”

Neal Shipley, a 23-year-old Pittsburgh native who finished runner-up in the U.S. Amateur, was the only amateur of the five in the field to make the cut.

Shipley shot a 1-under-par 71 in his first round and had it to as low as 3-under for the tournament through three holes of his second round.

But he slipped back from there, finishing with a second-round 76 to stand at 3-over for the week.

But that was good enough to get him into the weekend.

Neal Shipley was the only amateur to make the cut at the Masters this year.

“I just had a few bad swings coming into the back nine, and didn’t really play my best golf on that stretch 10 through 12,” he said. “I was just able to get some momentum going with a really good putt on 13 and just kind of kept it steady coming into the clubhouse from there.”“I was certainly thinking about low am,’’ Shipley went on. “I thought I had a chance to compete with all those guys. I thought I showed that [Thursday] in those really tough conditions, to shoot 1-under, that I belong out here. It’s just kind of a matter of proving that.

He said he hopes this won’t be his only Masters.

“You never know with how your career goes, injuries, or just maybe things don’t turn out the way you want to,’’ Shipley said. “I certainly don’t think it’s going to be my last Masters, but I think you have to treat every Masters as if it’s your last probably until you win.

“That’s just a thought process, just to enjoy it. I think that kept me loose and not as nervous, just trying to enjoy the moment.’’

He said the walk up 18 on Sunday “is going to be really, really cool,’’ adding, “It would be cool if I could put in some low numbers this weekend and really climb up that leaderboard. I’d really enjoy that.’’
