Blue Mountain Resort at night

Located just a 10-minute drive west of downtown Collingwood, Blue Mountain's ski slopes have been drawing crowds since they were established in the 1940s. Now covering an area of some 700 acres, including 250 set aside for downhill skiing, Blue Mountain has become the must-do ski destination in Ontario , drawing well over a million visitors each year.

Aprés ski fun is plentiful in Blue Mountain Village , a multi-million dollar alpine-themed village located at the base of the slopes. Here, you'll find everything from sports shops to art galleries, along with plenty of restaurants and cafés.

Blue Mountain Resort

To make the most of it, book a stay in one of the roomy hotels located here. Popular choices include The Westin Trillium House , The Lodges at Blue Mountain , and Mosaic , all of which offer spacious family suites and condo-style accommodations.

Suspension bridge, Scenic Caves Nature Adventures

A staple of the tourism scene in Collingwood and The Blue Mountains for decades, the superb Scenic Caves offer a variety of fun things to do for young and old alike. Located on the Niagara Escarpment and just minutes away from Blue Mountain Resort, the rebranded Scenic Caves Nature Adventures today features enough outdoor activities to keep you busy for hours.

The highlight is, of course, clambering around the caves and caverns after which the attraction is named. It's a thrilling experience, especially tackling the aptly named "Fat Man's Misery," and a deep cave that's usually got snow in its cool bottom year-round. You'll also see the secret natural cave and rock formations that served as a fortress for the Petun people who once lived here.

Other highlights include Ontario's longest footbridge. Measuring 128 meters in length, it spans a deep gorge and offers spectacular views over Collingwood and Georgian Bay; zipline adventures; and plenty of fun for kids, including playgrounds and wagon rides.

In winter, the attraction is open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing adventures, including fun nighttime tours.

Address: 260 Scenic Caves Road, The Blue Mountains, Ontario

Sunset Point Park

The attractive 30-acre Sunset Point Park is a must-visit in Collingwood. An easy 15-minute walk from Collingwood Museum, it's also accessible by car and has plenty of parking.

Set overlooking Nottawasaga Bay, on-site amenities include volleyball nets and a paved network of trails overlooking the water. New washroom facilities have also been added, along with a handy social hub featuring picnic tables and phone-charging stations.

A new adventure playground for kids opened in 2022, and greatly expands the already impressive array of fun things to do for families in Collingwood. It's hard to miss the playground's star attraction, an impressive lighthouse play structure that even boasts a zipline, climbing area, slides, and sandboxes.

Try to time your visit to coincide with the spectacular sunsets after which the park is named. It can get a little busy at these times, especially during the summer months, but bring a folding chair, arrive early, and enjoy the show.

Address: 79 St Lawrence Street, Collingwood, Ontario

Collingwood Arboretum

In addition to its many hiking trails through the natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay, Collingwood also offers a number of very pleasant places to visit for a more relaxed stroll closer to the downtown core.

From the main street, it's just a few minutes' walk to Millennium Overlook Park , where you'll already have spotted the town's huge old grain silos, once used to store this important commodity before being shipped across Canada.

Georgian Bay

From here, head through the Shipyards development to Collingwood Arboretum . This is a delightful place to explore whatever the weather, and includes a number of interesting sculptures to see along the way, not to mention a wide variety of plant species and trees. Keep heading west, and you'll find yourself on the lengthy boardwalks of Harbourview Park , which offers a variety of places to stop and view the birdlife.

If you're looking to explore the arboretum and its surrounds a little farther and crave some outdoor adventures, pop into Little Ed's Harbourview Rentals , located overlooking the lake in Harbourview Park, adjacent to the arboretum. The friendly folks here can quickly set you up with rentals of bikes, paddleboards, or even kayaks.

Arboretum Address: 6 Hickory Street #3E5 off, First Street, Collingwood, Ontario

Craigleith Provincial Park

Located about halfway between Collingwood and the quaint small town of Thornbury , Craigleith Provincial Park is the perfect place to get up close to the unique geology and rock formations of this area of Georgian Bay.

Take a stroll along the flat oil shale rock edged by surprisingly vibrant blue waters of the bay, and you may be lucky enough to spot some of the 450-plus million-year-old fossils that are frequently exposed (but DO NOT be tempted to dig them out, as it's an offence to do so!).

Established in 1967, the park's especially popular for families given the very shallow waters. It's also relatively easy to launch canoes and kayaks here, too, and is a popular spot for fishing.

Ample on-site camping is available, but can be a little crowded on weekends (reservations are required). A good-sized picnic shelter is also available for use, along with a kids' playground.

Pedestrian bridge over Beaver River Mouth

Stretching from Collingwood all the way to Meaford , and passing right by Craigleith Provincial Park, the 34-kilometer-long Georgian Trail provides an excellent opportunity to see the southern shoreline of Georgian Bay.

Built on what was once the old railway line that connected Collingwood with Meaford, it's perfectly level, with a hard-packed granular surface that makes it ideal not only for walking, but also biking. Come winter, the trail is transformed into an excellent cross-country ski trail that's also suitable for snowshoeing.

For those not in a hurry, a number of rest spots complete with benches are provided; many of these shady nooks also provide great views over Georgian Bay.

A great place to break up your journey, however you tackle it, is Thornbury. The trail passes right past the harbor and quaint downtown areas, so be sure to take the slight detour to see these picturesque corners of The Blue Mountains. A number of great sandy beaches are also dotted along the route.

Blue Mountain Village

Looking very much like a miniature version of its counterparts in Whistler, BC and Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Blue Mountain Village offers no end of fun whatever time of year you visit.

While winters are very much about skiing and après ski activities, summers here open up a whole other slew of outdoor activities to enjoy. Popular warm-weather things to do at Blue Mountain Village include mountain biking and hiking, as well as using the village and its many accommodation options as a base from which to venture forth.

Nestled at the foot of the mountain, the village consists of a network of pedestrian pathways joining up the shops, resorts, and tourist attractions. Along the way, you'll pass fire pits and splash zones, outdoor movie screens, comfy Muskoka chairs, buskers and music concerts, and plenty of other entertainment opportunities and experiences.

Watersports at Blue Mountain Village

Be sure to allocate some time to tackle the excellent Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster . One of Canada's first mountain coasters, this family-friendly tourist attraction whisks you up the hill in your open-air, go-cart-like car. Once at the top, gravity pulls you back down to the village at speeds of up to 42 kilometers per hour (there's a manual brake if you want to go slower!).

Also fun for kids, Plunge! Aquatic Centre features over 10,000 square feet of watery enjoyment, including heated indoor/outdoor pools, hot tubs, slides, and swings. A variety of kids' programs, including swimming lessons, are also available.

At this time of year, you'll also find countless events to enjoy, including concerts, festivals, outdoor movies, and much more.

Address: 156 Jozo Weider Blvd, The Blue Mountains, Ontario

St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church

One of the prettiest small churches in Ontario, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church is located just a short stroll from the downtown core and should be included on your Collingwood travel itinerary. While the church can trace its roots back to the arrival of the Jesuit priests from France in the 1640s, the church as it stands today was built in 1888.

While open for masses and other religious events, St. Mary's is certainly worth a visit even if you don't go inside. Made from red brick with a central spire, it makes for a lovely selfie backdrop.

Address: 63 Elgin Street, Collingwood, Ontario

 Thornbury Harbour

Located just 20 minutes' drive west of Collingwood by car, or an hour's bike ride along the Georgian Trail, the small community of Thornbury is quintessential small-town Ontario .

Street parking is at a premium (we did say it was small!), so you'd do well to start your exploration by parking at the public lot near Thornbury Harbour , or locking your bike up at the municipal harbor building. You'll find some of the best views over Georgian Bay here as you watch kids jump in the water from the breakwater (feel free to join them).

From here, pass the folks fishing, cross over the old railway bridge that carries the Georgian Trail over the Beaver River , and cut through the riverside park. You'll eventually come to Thornbury Fishway . This unique structure helps fish, including salmon in Fall and trout in spring, make their way to their spawning grounds upstream. It's a fascinating sight to see and photograph.

Highlights of the main street, Bruce Street South, include grabbing a snack at the excellent Thornbury Bakery Café , the Cheese Gallery , or any one of the town's coffee shops. You've earned it!

Collingwood Museum

Located at the north end of the downtown core in a replica of the town's 19th-century railway station, the Collingwood Museum is a must-visit for those wanting to learn more about the town's history.

Highlights include displays related to Collingwood's shipbuilding history and historic heritage buildings, as well as rich archives. Other displays include archaeological finds, artwork by local artists, vintage film reels, model ships, and information relating to the area's First Nations people.

Self-guided tour options are available, and a gift shop is located on-site. A variety of kids' programs are also available year-round. In addition to viewing its interesting exhibits and collections of historic artifacts, you can also pick up useful tourism info here, too.

Address: 45 St Paul Street, Collingwood, Ontario

Creemore Log Cabin

Head 25 minutes by car south of Collingwood to the picturesque, tiny town of Creemore. It's worth visiting for the scenic drive alone, and once on the wonderfully named Purple Hills, be sure to pull over for the spectacular views over Georgian Bay.

With plenty of street parking available, you can easily leave the car and venture about on foot. You'll be glad you did, as you can easily pop in and out of the quaint stores, galleries, and eateries lining the main street, and in some cases, even sit awhile outdoors and watch the world pass (slowly) by.

Must-sees here include what's billed as North America's smallest jail . Measuring just four-and-a-half by six meters, this stone structure was constructed in 1892 and was even used once to lock up an errant cow; for a fun photo, get the kids to stand behind its bars. A similarly sized pioneer-era log cabin can also be used as a great selfie backdrop.

Revitalized and expanded in 2022, Creemore Horticultural Park is a must-visit. This lovely green space, also referred to as "the Village Green", offers a variety of fun things to do, from watching the kids play to enjoying a fun family picnic. Plenty of shelter and picnic tables are available, and the park's central fountain makes for a great selfie or family photo.

Things to Do in Collingwood, Ontario (Expert Guide)

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

Looking for things to do in Collingwood, Ontario? You’re in the right place.

There are so many great outdoor adventure things to do in Collingwood, Ontario. With the Blue Mountains, hundreds of acres of forests, caves and being right on the beautiful Georgian Bay – Collingwood is one of the nicest towns in southern Ontario, and a great year-round vacation destination.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

I go to Collingwood often, usually to visit my best friend who lives there; other times as a tourist, even thought I’ve been there more times than I could count. There are a lot of special attractions in Collingwood that draw you back more than once.

I grew up near the area and am familiar with all the best things to do in Collingwood, and can share with you some great ideas of things to do in Collingwood year-round

So, let’s jump in – things to do in Collingwood year-round!

Things to Do in Collingwood Year-Round

Whether you visit Collingwood in fall, winter or summer, there are some great year-round activities – both indoor and outdoor

1. Get views of the ‘Collingwood Stacks’

The Collingwood Stacks is almost 100 years old, and was used to store grain for several decades. While they stopped using it to store grain years ago, the terminal building is an iconic symbol of the town of Collingwood.

There are several parks and walks along the shoreline where you can get great views of the harbour and of the stacks.

collingwood stacks

The Collingwood Harbour is beautiful and unique with the view of the stacks, the boats in the marina, and the blue mountains in the distance.

The stacks are visible from many parts of town, but some particularly good spots to get a view of them are:

  • Walk up Heritage Drive, which will bring you as close as possible to the stacks, and see
  • a shoreline park called Shipyards Amphitheatre & Greenspace; beautiful views of the stacks, harbour and shoreline, and nice for a walk too
  • The inuksuk at Sunset Point Park (you’ll see the stacks in the distance)

2. Go shopping and eating on Hurontario Street

The main street of Collingwood is called Hurontario street and it has a similar feel to Niagara on the Lake. It’s quaint, with a lot of boutique stores, spas, cafés and restaurants.

As an added bonus, you have a view of the Blue Mountains in the background from the main street. Hurontario street is very close to the shoreline.

small alley hurontario street collingwood

While you’re in Collingwood, I recommend taking a walk up Hurontario street, to do window shopping or grab a bite to eat.

Some of my favourite stops on Hurontario street are:

  • The Gibson – hidden away café down a narrowest alleyway in town (pictured above.) Very popular, busy at lunch time!
  • Fig and Feta , a sit-down Greek restaurant
  • Crave the Chocolatier – great place to get artisan chocolates
  • The Candy Factory – a factory where they make their own candy; including chocolates, gummies and Turkish Delight

Pro Tip: It can be hard to get a parking spot on Hurontario street, especially on weekends. (Also, the parking is diagnol which most people aren’t used to – be prepared for that.) I usually go to a side-street if I can’t find a vacant spot on Hurontario street.

3. Take a walk around Blue Mountain Village

It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Collingwood, a walk around Blue Mountain Village is always worth it.

The village has boutique stores and brand names, restaurants, hotels, and even a spa.

Blue Mountain Village Collingwood

Some of the key things to eat (or do) in Blue Mountain Village are:

  • Special events which happen on the stage, or in some of the venues within the village
  • Have an upscale sit-down dinner at Tholo’s, or at Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill
  • Grab a hot chocolate at Royal Majesty Espresso Bar Bakery (I never leave Blue Mountain without getting the roasted marshmallow hot chocolate)
  • Lot’s of shopping at big brand stores and smaller businesses stores. Great place to find gifts and Canadian souvenirs

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

My husband and I celebrated an anniversary weekend by staying in Blue Mountain Village; it was nice to be able to wake up and take a morning stroll around the mountain village.

Blue Mountain Village is also a nice place to stay while you’re visiting Collingwood, because its only a 15 minute drive from downtown Collingwood, allows you close access to the Blue Mountain attractions and scenic caves.

Parking has gotten absolutely crazy at Blue Mountain Village in recent years. If you’re visiting on a weekend, or at a dinner time, you may have to park quite far back in the parking lot. At special events, you may not find a spot at all. In that case, there are paid parking areas nearby

5. Sample local craft beers

There are a number of breweries in Collingwood to sample local craft beers.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

Here are your options for craft breweries in Collingwood:

  • Collingwood Brewery – right downtown, and the first brewery in the area. They have weekly events , live music, and merchandise.
  • Northwinds Brewery – 2 locations – one in downtown Collingwood, and one in Blue Mountain Village.
  • Black Bellows Brewery – downtown on Hurontario street; has food and exciting events
  • Side Launch -located in the outskirts of town, have music and events

I have only been to the Blue Mountain location of Northwinds, and we go there at least once a year. The food and atmosphere there are great. I’m not a beer person, but my husband Eric recommends the flights!

6. Enjoy some live music

For a town of its size, Collingwood has a descent live music scene. There are a several bars and venues in Collingwood where you can enjoy live music, with a meal or dancing.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

I have celebrated bachelorette parties with friends in Collingwood where we went to clubs and danced to live music, and have also been lucky to see Bif Naked, a Canadian singer, perform in Collingwood

Here are some places to enjoy live music in Collingwood:

  • Harbour Street Fish Bar – live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
  • Black Bellows Brewing Company – has live music sporatically; upcoming events can be found here .
  • Collingwood Station on the Green at Cranberry Golf Course. From June to end of August, there’s live music a few nights every week – see upcoming schedule here .
  • Side Launch – has a taproom with live music and events.

7. Go hiking

Collingwood is a great place for local hikes, and there are so many places nearby to choose from.

One novelty about the hiking in the Collingwood area is that because of the Blue Mountains, a lot of the trails are pretty hilly, this means extra work, of course) but also – beautiful views, like this:

hiking in collingwood

Here are some of the hikes you can do in Collingwood in the area:

  • Beaver Valley Loop Trail , a 13 km (8 mile) loop which is part of the Bruce Trail.
  • The Loree Forest Loop , in Loree which is nea Blue Mountain. 5 km (3.1 miles) and relatively easy. Sections of it are also part of the Bruce Trail
  • Blue Mountain Groove Trail
  • Short trails along the Shipyards Amphitheatre & Greenspace, and the Arboteum
  • Hiking trails at Scenic Caves, which you can access with admission ticket to Scenic Caves
  • The Singhampton Caves Trailhead (21 minutes away) free hiking through caves of the Canadian shield, somewhat similar to Scenic Caves

8. Walk over the suspension bridge

The Suspension Bridge at Scenic Caves is another year-round attraction. The bridge is 420 feet long and 82 feet high. You get beautiful 360 views of the surrounding area from the top.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

Your admission ticket to Scenic Caves includes being able to walk over the Suspension Bridge.

The bridge is actually fairly close to the entrance, so you don’t even need to walk too far to get to it (the direction you go depends on your preference.) The trail options are well marked so you’ll know where you’re going.

From the bridge, you have a beautiful view of the forest valley, Collingwood and Georgian Bay.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

9. Visit a Nordic spa

Scandinave Spa is a popular Nordic spa just outside Collingwood with hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and quiet rooms to either read, relax or meditate in.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

I go to Scandinave often, with friends and my husband. I prefer visiting in summer, because you can read a book outside on a hammock. The winter is good time to visit too, because the hot tubs are so warming in the chilly outside air.

The only way to reserve a visit to Scandinave is to book a massage (which you should do a few weeks in advance, as its very popular.) If you don’t have a massage booking, then you can drop in.

If its a popular day, then they will put you on a waitlist. You can also add yourself to the waitlist here.

Pro Tip: Scandinave is very popular, and draws people all the way from Toronto. But its not the only spa in the area, anymore. There’s now a similar spa in Orillia called Vettä Nordic Spa, which I’ve tried and is great as well.

10. Ride the Ridge Runner

The Ridge Runner forest coaster is Ontario’s first forest rollercoaster. Its a 1 km (0.9 mile) long coaster that takes you through the forest in the Blue Mountains.

It goes 42 km (26 miles) per hour, and is a lot of fun.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

You can find the Ridge Runner right in Blue Mountain Village, towards the ski hills. From the village area, walk towards the Blue Mountain Ski resort area, and you will see the lineup for the forest runner.

The Ridge Runner is open year round, and there’s usually a lineup on summer weekends. There’s a booth right by the lineup where you can buy tickets for the Ridge Runner.

Good to Know: You have to be at least 16 years old to ride the coaster, and anyone over 3 can be a passenger. I went with my 6 year old daughter riding with me, with other family members in other cars. It was a fun and memorable experience that I’d recommend.

11. Learn about local history at the Collingwood Museum

The Collingwood Museum is a collection of artifacts teaching you about Collingwood’s maritime and settlement history.

There are artifacts used from another time, such as an old canon and canoe, models of ships, and there are interesting videos to watch too.

model ships maritime history

The museum is tiny, but worth visiting – especially if you live in Collingwood and want to know more about its past. The Collingwood Museum is free to visit, but accepts donations. ($4 is the suggested amount.)

The museum is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10am until 4pm.

5. Go for a dip in the Plunge Aquatic Centre

The Plunge is located in Blue Mountain Village, and has an indoor and outdoor pool section, as well as hot tubs and indoor splash pad.

Both indoor and outdoor pools are open year round – in the summer, you can enjoy the green hills of the mountains, and in the winter you can watch skiers whiz down the hills while you’re in the pool.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

The plunge pools are heated (29.4 ° C or 85 ° F) and there are hot tubs on site as well. The plunge can be done with any age, but is mostly popular for families with kids.

If you want to do the plunge, I recommend heading there first thing in the morning. It can get a bit crowded and noisy as the day goes on.

There are different pass options to the Plunge, such as a full day, or a 2-hour ticket. They can be booked on their website here .

12. Take a walk through the Arborteum

The Arboteum is a nature reserve near the shoreline in Collingwood. There are funky sculptures, benches, pathways, and you can see the Collingwood Terminal in the distance.

You can go for a walk in the Arbotreum any time of year. We’ve gone sledding and toboganning (there’s a small hill) in the winter, but its nicer in the summer when you can relax on a bench and take in the views.

collingwood arboteum

The Arbotreum is free to visit, although parts of it can also be reserved for private events.

I see many people walking their dogs at the Collingwood Arbotreum, or just taking a walk outside to relax, or do bird watching.

Things to Do in Collingwood in Summer Only

Here are the best things to do in Collingwood between the months of May until end of September

6. Explore caves

The caves in Collingwood are located off the trail in Scenic Caves Nature Adventures.

The Scenic Caves park is open year-round, but the cave section can only be accessed in the summer, for safety reasons. The cave exploration part of the park is definitely worth it if you’re in Collingwood during the warm months.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

There is one spot in the caves that is so arrow and you actually have to walk sideways in order get through it. (Pictured above.) The opening is exactly 14 inches wide.

Besides the caves themselves, there are other activities connected with the park; most are open year round, and some summer only.

  • Treetop trekking and zip-lining (summer only)
  • The suspension bridge and hiking trails (year round)
  • Lots of activities for kids – a large adventure playground near the visitor’s centre, mini golf, a train they can ride, and an area where they can dig for rocks

You can buy an admission ticket to Scenic Caves that includes all or some of the above. Rates differ based on season. Check out the options on their website .

Wear hiking shoes with good grip if you visit the caves portion of the trail, because the rocks can be slippery. I also recommend learning to identify poison ivy.

1. Ride Canada’s longest twin zip-line

The Thunderbird Twin Zip-line are two sets of zip-lines side by side, and are part of the Scenic Caves Nature Adventure park. It’s an option add-on to a Scenic Caves admission.

On the Thunderbird, you soar over treetops of the Blue Mountains at up to 70 km per hour. (It has a rider control function which allows you to control how fast you go.)

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

The Thunderbird Twin Zip-line is 2500 feet long and takes a couple minutes to reach the other side, depending how fast you allow it to go.

My husband and I went on the Thunderbird during a romantic getaway weekend in Collingwood, and it was a really fun experience that I’d recommend if you’re up for an adrenaline rush.

It makes a visit to Scenic Caves extra memorable. On a clear day, you can see the town of Collingwood in the distance from the platform that you zip-line from.

Pro Tip: There is also a smaller zip-line offered at Blue Mountain which is only 50 feet high and 1,000 feet long.

3. Treetop Trekking

In the summer, you can do treetop trekking at Timber Challenge High Ropes which is a Blue Mountain Resort attraction.

There are 7 different high-ropes courses, and three different levels of difficulty.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

I did the Blue Mountain Treetop Treking for my friend’s bachelorette party and it was a lot of fun! It was a great way to spend some time in nature, bond with friends and get some good views.

Pro Tip: The treetop trekking, Blue Mountain zip-line, the plunge, gondola and other Blue Mountain activities can be lumped together in a “play all day pass.” So if you want to do them all, then the pass is a good deal. Play All Day passes go on sale in April. You can save money by buying the pass online in advance.

4. Swim at Sunset Point Beach

The most popular beach in the area is Wasaga Beach, but Collingwood has its own small beach too – Sunset Point Beach.

The beach has trails, large open green space, volleyball courts, and of course beautiful views of Georgian Bay.

There’s also a park with a newly renovated playground for kids, and washrooms on site. It has its own parking lot, which is costs money between May and October.

Things to Do in Collingwood in Winter

Collingwood is one of the best places to visit in winter in Ontario , because of the year-round activities mentioned above and also – Blue Mountain Ski resort.

1. Skiing at Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is the largest public ski resort in Ontario, with 7 chairlifts and 42 different slopes.

It’s great for all ages; from beginner to advanced.

blue mountain

My daughter did the Snow School at Blue Mountain, where the work with mainly kids, but people of all ages.

Like from the suspension bridge, the views from the top of the hill at Blue Mountain are very pretty.

2. Festival of Lights in Blue Mountain Village

Blue Mountain has a beautiful light display set up for the holiday season, from mid November until the first week of January.

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

There is a huge bash at New Year’s Eve that is televised and does a count-down. I haven’t been to the New Year’s Eve bash, but sometimes watch it on TV.

I go to the Festival of Lights every year; we enjoy getting a bite to eat in the village, and walking around the village and the pond, admiring the lights.

3. Go snowshoeing

Scenic Caves offers snowshoeing experiences in the winter months. You can snowshoe on the trails, which range from easy to difficult.

The highlight is being able to snowshoe on the suspension bridge, and getting a spectacular view of the snow-covered Collingwood and icy Georgian Bay.

snowshoeing

You can bring your own snowshoes if you have them, or they have rentals on site.

You have to be at least 8 years old to snowshoe. You simply buy an admission ticket to scenic caves and you can enjoy the trails via snowshoe.

Where to Stay in Collingwood

Here are some of the best places to stay in Collingwood depending on your budget. I recommend staying in Blue Mountain Village for the best experience or special occasions

Budget: Holiday Inn Express & Suites -2 swimming pools (1 indoor), free breakfast, a shot drive into downtown Collingwood, and just over 10 minutes to Blue Mountain Mid-Range: Candlewood Suites Collingwood short drive into town, and a 5 minute walk to Sunset Point Beach Luxury: The Dorchester Hotel Located in a historic building, right on Hurontario street. Steps away from restaurants, shopping and live music, and 10 minute drive to Blue Mountain village

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

Where to Eat in Collingwood

Collingwood actually has a descent foodie scene with a variety of options. Here are some great local places to eat

Bent Taco – wacky, and creative Mexcian food. Good vegan options. The Gibson – a café with organic and vegan options Press Market – organic, raw, healthy and vegan options. Northwinds Brewery – two locations (Collingwood and Blue Mountain Village) great craft beers and bar food Heavenly Café – Paris inspired cafe with pastries, soups, sandwiches, coffee and hot chocolate The Hungry Sumo and SUHSI HON – both great sushi places in downtown Collingwood The Alphorn Restaurant – traditional Swiss food in the Blue Mountains Thonburry Thai – our favourite Thai food restaurant in Collingwood; very authentic; lots of vegetarian options Fig and Feta – an upscale Greek restaurant on the main street

There are too many good restaurants in Collingwood to name, but the above are a few of the noteable ones that I’ve tried

Hydrotherapy is an age-old Finnish tradition that helps relax both the body and the mind. It improves blood circulation and activates the lymphatic system to promote detoxification. It also releases endorphins, or well-being hormones, into the bloodstream.

Plunge Aquatic Centre

While most people instantly think about the ski resort, Blue Mountain offers many other activities – including its aquatic centre. Plunge Blue Mountain includes both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a water playground with docks, hot tubs, an indoor splash pad, rope swings, a water slide, and more. The heated outdoor pools make it an enjoyable place for families to spend a couple of hours regardless of the season.

Make sure to pack a swimsuit , as street clothes are not allowed in the pool area. They also recommend bringing flip-flops or water socks , as regular street shoes are also not permitted. This is especially important in the cooler winter temperatures as the ground between pools can become icy. Plus, Britt shared that the salt they put down to deal with the ice was hard on her bare feet on her last winter trip.

Fun Things To Do In Collingwood

Collingwood, Ontario is a beautiful city that sits on the south shores of Georgian Bay bordering the Blue Mountains. With fantastic restaurants and gorgeous attractions, discover the best things to do in Collingwood, Ontario.

Things to do in Collingwood, Ontario Photo by Jeff S. Photo Art

The town of Collingwood, Ontario is a beautiful Ontario city located on the shorelines of one of the most beautiful bodies of water in Ontario. Although Collingwood is known primarily as an industrial town, the volume and quality of attractions in Collingwood often surprise visitors.

The city is often overshadowed in the tourism industry by the nearby region of Blue Mountains, Ontario . But, for those who use Collingwood as a base to explore the shores of South Georgian Bay, there is a treasure trove of experience at the ready.

A Little About Collingwood, Ontario

Downtown Collingwood Things to do

The area that is now known as Collingwood has a rich history dating back thousands of years. For ages it was the home of the Petun Nation of Indigenous Peoples before they were forced out by the Iroquois Nation in 1650. But that reign didn’t last long.

In the mid 1800s, European settlers and African Freepeople escaping American slavery settled the region. It quickly began to prosper, and was recognized as a town in 1858.

Since then, Collingwood was linked to the Canadian Rail network. The towns prime position on the shores of Georgian Bay made it an important shipping port, and by proxy, one of the most important shipbuilding and repair ports in Ontario.

Although industry has remained a large portion of the economy of Collingwood, tourism has increased year over year as visitors and locals discover the range of natural beauty, hiking trails, skiing, and world-class restaurants that can be found both in and around Collingwood.

What To Do In Collingwood

Each time I visit Collingwood I’m introduced to new and exciting things to do in the city. It’s astounding how this town can be situated so close to tourist meccas such as Blue Mountains and the Bruce Peninsula yet still have so many things that have yet to be uncovered by the masses.

Similar to cities such as Hamilton , Collingwood is an industrial-focused city that is surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the province. But there are many more things to do in Collingwood than just explore the outdoors.

Here are a few of my favourites.

Eat Your Way Through The Collingwood Food Scene

The sheer awesomeness of the Collingwood food scene astounds me each time I visit. Each time I visit, I try to explore new restaurants and eateries. But there are a few that keep drawing me back in to try again and again.

The Smoke BBQ House is one of my favorite restaurants in Collingwood. This unassuming location (as all the best bbq houses seem to be) on First St. led by chef Cam Dyment serves up some of the best smoked meat in the province.

If you’re looking for the best breakfast in Collingwood, it’s never a bad idea to swing by Duncans Cafe on Hurontario for some classic fare. Or grab a delicious organic breakfast burrito at Press Market on Keith Ave.

Sip On Some Collingwood Craft Beers

Collingwood Brewery

We’ve made no secret of our love for Ontario craft breweries here in Ontario. From Manitoulin Island to Windsor , we’ve shared some of our favourites time and time again.

Collingwood has its own booming craft beer scene. In fact, there are too many brewhouses in the city to mention here. So I’ll share a few of my favourites for now and come back to outline even more.

Northwinds Brewery on First St. is one to check out. They have a location in Blue Mountain Village as well and serve up a wide range of ales and IPAs. But personally, it’s their Milk Run Coffee Stout that keeps me coming back.

With a bottle shop open every day from 12-6, Black Bellows Brewery is a central downtown craft brewery featuring a small, but flavourful collection of brews. Their Baltic Porter is a rich beer that’s perfect for enjoying after a day of skiing. But their White Witbier is the perfect summertime refreshment.

And, of course, if wine is your thing, just north of Collingwood is one of Ontario’s emerging wine regions .

Take A Hike Along The Collingwood Shoreline

The shoreline and woods surrounding Collingwood are an absolute heaven for hiking and outdoor enthusiasts. The city is just an hour from Awenda Provincial Park, where you can find one of the most beautiful hikes in Ontario .

But within Collingwood, there are plenty of great trails to enjoy as well. The Loree Forest Loop, which is a 5.3 km moderate loop that starts off of 21st sideroad offers sweeping views of Georgian Bay and the shoreline.

The Harbourview Path is an easy shoreline trail that takes you from Optimist Harbourview Park for 3.7 km along a series of trails. It can get washed out when the water is high, but it offers amazing sunset views.

And you simply can’t mention hiking in Collingwood without mentioning the 33.8 km Georgian Trail . This stunning waterfront trail begins in Collingwood and winds northwards towards the town of Meaford. Here it links with the Tom Thompson Trail up towards Owen Sound.

Hit The Historic Sites in Collingwood

collingwood ontario tourist attractions

There’s a lot of history in Collingwood. And visitors to the city would be missing out if a little bit of time wasn’t put aside for these incredible places to visit in Collingwood.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church dates back to the city’s origin, having been built in 1858. There’s not a lot to check out. But its classic style and beautiful stained glass are a treat to behold.

The Collingwood Museum on Saint Paul St. is located in the old Collingwood Train Station. The museum offers a glimpse back into the settler life and early history of the town. And there are some wonderful children’s programs for those visiting Collingwood with kids.

Explore The Arts At Tremont Studio

This unique art studio workspace offers the general public incredible access to meet the artists as they work. The studio, located in the artistic Simcoe St. area of downtown Collingwood is housed in a former hotel that is not considered a heritage landmark building.

At any time you can find about a dozen working artists crafting their own displays and individual creations. The hallways themselves serve as a gallery where you can see the final products in all of their glory.

You can drop by or book an appointment to enjoy Tremont Studio.

Get a Glimpse of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse

Notawasaga Lighthouse in Collingwood, Ontario

One of the most iconic structures in Collingwood lies just off-shore on Nottawasaga Island. It can be seen from many waterfront areas in the city, and from nearby trails including the bluff trails at Scenic Caves.

Constructed between 1856 and 1858, the Nottawasaga Lighthouse is one of the few remaining symbols of Collingwood’s marine heritage. The lighthouse has fallen into disrepair in recent years and there is a preservation society dedicated to maintaining it as part of the city’s heritage.

Many visitors like to kayak to the lighthouse from the Collingwood Harbour. It’s about a 1-hour trip each way. Keep in mind that Georgian Bay can get windy, so pay attention to water conditions.

I am learning so much about Ontario and plan to visit extensively next Spring/Summer 2023. I drove across Canada many years ago traveling from Alaska. As an American citizen, I have always loved Canada and find it disappointing how little most Americans know about Canada. I have friends now in Ontario and would someday like to live there!
