North Market North Market free

Ohio's only public market is in Columbus and certainly worth a walk through. North Market was first established in 1876 and is home to more than 30 vendors selling a range of products, including fresh meat, produce, baked goods, cheese and flowers. On select Saturdays, a portion of the market is set up outside, and on Sundays in June to October local artwork, furniture, jewelry and more is also on display.

Visitors say this market provides a wonderful food selection at affordable prices. Many were impressed with the sheer variety of cuisine types represented at this small market, and say there's something for everyone here. A few warn that the market gets quite congested on the weekends, so it's best to arrive early or visit on a weekday to beat the crowds.

Huntington Park Huntington Park

Enjoying a baseball game at Huntington Park is one of recent travelers' favorite things to do. The homegrown Columbus Clippers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and  visitors appreciate the views, the atmosphere and the affordability of games at this ballpark. The park can accommodate 10,000 but most say it's rarely crowded, allowing for visitors to walk around and explore different parts of the stadium. Recent travelers added there's not a bad seat in the house.

Single game tickets cost between $7 and $20 for adults and between $4 and $7 for children younger than 12 and seniors, depending on the seat. Several concessions vendors are spread throughout the stadium for food and drink needs.  You'll find the stadium downtown in the Arena District; parking is available on-site for a small fee. For more information on game times and tickets, visit the  website .

German Village German Village free

This village earned its name from the German immigrants who settled here in the early 19th century. Much of the neighborhood has retained its Germanic roots, evident in the architecture and  cuisine found here.  For delectable sausage, schnitzel and cream puffs,  Schmidt's Restaurant and Sausage Haus is the place to go. There's also an annual Haus und Garten Tour and German Village Oktoberfest . And don't worry: You can walk off all that food with a stroll in nearby Schiller Park, named for German poet Friedrich Schiller. The European aesthetic of the neighborhood, as well as its local shops and restaurants ( The Book Loft and the Golden Hobby Shop, for instance) make it one of the most charming places in Columbus.

Visitors love this quaint neighborhood, citing its authentic feel and charming shops as the perfect atmosphere for an afternoon stroll. However, a handful of travelers warn that other than eating and walking around, there's not much else to do here.

Visiting Columbus, Ohio: 1-Day, 2-Day & 3-Day Itineraries

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated Apr 14, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Ohio's capital city of Columbus is an artsy and sporty cosmopolitan city with Midwestern roots. You will find activities and destinations that pay homage to the state's agricultural industry, and sections of neighborhoods made up of dozens of ethnic groups making their first homes in America.

What this means for visitors trying to plan an itinerary is that you can visit a world-class art museum or catch a live fashion show one minute, and fill a basket of just-picked produce from a local farmers market the next.

It means that you can cheer on NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets for the win or catch a fly-ball during a Columbus Clipper's baseball game at Huntington Park, then grab dinner at one of the many local ethnic restaurants representing more than 40 nationalities.

With these one-, two-, and three-day itineraries in Columbus, you can get a mix of the highlights while working in some appreciation for the finer details of the city that turn first-time visitors into yearly vacationers.

ONE-DAY ITINERARY

Columbus skyline from bridge with sculpture

Things to Do in One Day in Columbus: If your trip is a quick one in the capital city, it is best to start in the downtown area then expand into the nearby neighborhoods of the Short North to the north and German Village to the south, if time permits.

Start with a visit in the heart of the city at the Ohio Statehouse. There are regular free tours offered daily, or you can explore the Capital Square complex on your own. The outside grounds are filled with statues, monuments, and hidden finds like a small bee aviary on one side of the statehouse.

Ohio Statehouse

Sprawled across a vast swathe of eastern Columbus are the fantastic flower beds, greenhouses and grounds of Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. A delightful spot to spend some time, it is home to over 400 species of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs from all around the globe.

First opened to the public in 1895, its grand conservatory now contains both native and exotic flora with desert, tropical and island biomes all represented.

While its lush lawns and picturesque paths are pleasant to stroll around, its elegant Palm House with Victorian-style architecture and its large collection of Dale Chihuly glassworks, count among the garden’s main highlights.

3. German Village

German Village

Another of the city’s delightfully distinct neighborhoods that is well worth exploring is the German Village just south of the center. Named after the massive population of immigrants who moved to Columbus in the early-to-mid nineteenth century, the vibrant area still retains its Germanic roots with architectural, cultural and culinary influences all on show.

As you stroll around, you’ll come across historic churches and old red brick buildings with much of life centered around the busy S. Third Street. Lined by German restaurants and shops selling sausages, schnitzel and confectionery, the neighborhood has a charming European look and feel and its raucous Oktoberfest draws thousands of visitors each year.

2. Center of Science and Industry (COSI)

Center of Science and Industry

Although it is geared primarily towards children, adults too are sure to enjoy the hundreds of interactive exhibits in the Center of Science and Industry. Set across the Scioto River, the center has instilled and inspired an interest in science and technology in countless generations since opening in 1964.

You’ll discover fascinating exhibits on everything from dinosaurs and space exploration to energy and inventions, it has exciting hands-on experiments and activities for young ones to try out.

In addition to watching thrilling live science shows and demonstrations, visitors can stop by its 3D theater and planetarium that both put on educational films and documentaries.

1. Easton Town Center

Easton Town Center

More than just a mall, the phenomenally popular Easton Town Center is designed to look like an American town or city from the early-to-mid twentieth century. Lining its streets are more than 300 shops and restaurants with the enormous outdoor shopping complex attracting over thirty million visitors each year.

Located just fifteen minutes’ drive northeast of the center, the expansive site has all kinds of stores to peruse with Nordstrum and Macy’s anchoring it. Aside from shopping for fashion items, beauty products and accessories, you can stop for a drink or meal at any of its cozy coffee shops and chain restaurants, while its massive movie theater shows all the latest big releases.

American Dream Downpayment Initiative

House

As of March 1, 2024, the maximum loan amount for ADDI has been increased to $14,999.

For additional information, please contact:

Brandy Ashley, MA I (614) 645-9656 [email protected] 111 N. Front Street, 3rd Floor Columbus, OH 43215

The City of Columbus American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI) Program operates jointly with participating lenders by providing funds to create homeownership opportunities in Columbus for low and middle-income, first-time homebuyers. The property must be located in the City of Columbus corporation limits. If the property is located in the City of Columbus, this program may be used in conjunction with the Housing Development Program (HDP). Outlined below are applicant and property criteria for participation in this program.

The ADDI program offers a deferred, forgivable loan to be used for downpayment and closing costs. The buyer(s) must reside in the property for five years after closing or the funds must be repaid to the City from sale proceeds. The property is unable to be sold, rented, or transferred during these five years and must remain as the sole residence of the buyer(s). After the five years, the mortgage and restrictive covenant are released on the property and the loan is forgiven.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the applicant must be a first time* homebuyer, meet income guidelines, receive homebuyer education from a Housing Division HUD Certified Agency, and purchase a single family home or condominium in the City of Columbus. The funds for downpayment assistance are limited and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

*A first-time homebuyer is defined as an individual and their spouse who have not owned a home during the three-year period (thirty-six months) prior to the purchase of a home with ADDI assistance. A minimum of six (6) months residency in the State of Ohio and a permanent resident of the United States are also required to be considered a first-time homebuyer.

Households whose income is at or below 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI) as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), may qualify for up to six percent (6%) of the purchase price of the home, maximum loan of $14,999.

All buyers must contribute $500 of their own funds toward the purchase of the home. This $500 may not be gifted or come from any other source other than the buyer themselves. Appraisal and Home inspection costs will be considered based on approved criteria. Buyer must fall within 35% House Debt/Income ratio and 45% Total debt/Income ratio based on City income and debt calculations in order to qualify.

2023 HUD HOME Income Limits (PDF, 79KB)

Application Process

The City of Columbus maintains a list of lenders that are certified to utilize the ADDI Program. In order for the application to be processed the lender must be on this list.

(PDF, 121KB) ADDI-Lender-List-2.2024.pdf (PDF, 123KB)

Lenders not on the list are welcome to contact the Housing Division to become certified or by completing the attached Lender Participation Agreement. After completing, signing, and notarizing please submit the original ADDI Lender Participation Agreement (PDF, 87KB) to the Housing Division located at 111 N. Front St, 3rd Floor, Columbus, OH 43215 Attn: Brandy Ashley

The City of Columbus requires that the buyer first contact a lender to become qualified for a mortgage loan and then locates a home to purchase through a certified real estate agent. After the mortgage loan is approved, the lender should submit the completed ADDI package on the buyer's behalf. Depending on the thoroughness of the application packet, the approval generally takes four to six (4 to 6) weeks from receipt of the COMPLETED application. Once the package receives final approval, both the lender and homebuyer receive the approval letter and the ADDI funds are ordered at this time. Please allow 3-5 business days for receipt of funds. Closing may occur as soon as three (3) business days after receipt of funds. For conventional loans only, closing may occur as early as 48 hours after approval. For FHA loans, the closing can take place approximately two (2) weeks after the commitment letter is sent to the homebuyer and the lender.

Where could Ohio traffic be bad during the solar eclipse? See the map from ODOT

columbus ohio tourist attractions

If you travel for the solar eclipse next month, you may be stuck in traffic for a while.

Officials expect 150,000 to 575,000 visitors when the total solar eclipse casts its shadow over Ohio on April 8. The 124-mile-wide path of totality  will cross the state from southwest to northeast, briefly blanketing cities like Dayton, Mansfield, Akron and Cleveland in darkness. Cincinnati and Columbus are just south of totality.

Your safety: Do eclipse glasses expire? Are my eclipse glasses safe? Ohio doctors offer tips

The total eclipse will last only a few minutes, but some of the state's major highways could be jammed for hours as people head home.

To help emergency responders prepare − and give visitors a preview of what could happen − the Ohio Department of Transportation created an interactive online map forecasting traffic that day.

ODOT spokesman Matt Bruning said the numbers predict possible demand, not the number of vehicles on the road: "The maps were trying to highlight potential areas of concern for safety agencies − not necessarily 'where to avoid' for the public."

More: How Ohio is planning for traffic jams during the April solar eclipse

When will eclipse traffic be the worst in Ohio? Where?

ODOT mapped out potential scenarios based on the number of visitors to Ohio: 150,000, 350,000, 575,000 and 625,000. Consultants crunched the numbers using anonymized cellphone location data for a typical day in Ohio and travel patterns in Kentucky and Tennessee during the 2017 eclipse.

The April 8 eclipse will begin in southwest Ohio around 3:08 p.m. and last fewer than four minutes, with the exact time depending on your location.

Southwest and central Ohio may experience some gridlock that morning, and all four models show demand increasing in the hours before the eclipse. But the real snarls are expected once it's over. The heaviest traffic appears in the forecast late afternoon and doesn't appear to ease up for hours.

Bruning said ODOT expects the worst congestion in northwest Ohio around Toledo and Findlay, the closest viewing spot for eclipse tourists from Michigan. Other areas that could be busier than normal include Interstate 71 and Interstate 270 in the Columbus area, Interstate 75 from Dayton to Cincinnati and Interstate 77 between Akron and Canton.

You can view ODOT’s forecasting map at bit.ly/ODOTeclipsemap .

How can I prepare for eclipse traffic in Ohio?

The biggest piece of advice: Be patient. Motorists should also keep their gas tank full; pack a cellphone charger, water and snacks; and have a paper map on hand in case cell service is bad.

State officials also recommend eclipse-watchers stay put afterward, instead of hitting the road once it's over. To that end, Ohio's tourism arm  is promoting other activities in the path of totality, from museums and parks to restaurants and breweries.

Ohioans who live within totality are encouraged to watch the eclipse  at or near home.

Haley BeMiller is a reporter for the USA TODAY Network Ohio Bureau, which serves the Columbus Dispatch, Cincinnati Enquirer, Akron Beacon Journal and 18 other affiliated news organizations across Ohio.
