STAR COACHES: THE PIONEER OF THE EXECUTIVE LIMO COACH...

After meeting with numerous coach builders who turned him down, Danny met with Jerry Calhoun, the Godfather of the rock & roll bus industry.

The meeting was brief and to the point.  Jerry asked Danny to write down references and then told him to go to lunch...

When Danny returned from lunch Jerry said "Go pick out a bus, I believe in you!"

Since 1990 and millions of dollars later, the relationship between Danny Hamilton and Jerry Calhoun has been very special.

14 BUNKER COACHES

country artist tour buses

Many years ago, and thanks to our friend George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, we made a decision to convert some of our coaches from 12 bunkers to 14 bunkers...

This move has opened the door to helping bands save money by "sharing a bus" with an opening act, or carrying a full crew and keeping the cost involved to only one bus...

With a year round rate starting at $850 / day, our 2013 to 2016 model 14 bunker coaches can really make a difference to bands and touring theatrical shows that are faced with tight budgetary restraints...

OUR DRIVERS GIVE BACK…

"GUYS, FIGURE OUT A WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO OUR CLIENTS."

We knew that the economy was going to tank. We didn't know when, or how bad things would get, we just knew the bubble was going to burst.

Over the course of two weeks, we held countless phone calls with all of our drivers discussing their ideas on "how to make a difference".

They came up with many great ideas. Finally, our drivers decided that the best way to give back and make a difference was to change their overdrive structure IN FAVOR of the client.

Industry standard has always been, and still is, for a driver to charge an overdrive (equal to a days pay) after driving 450 miles.

Our drivers voluntarily and collectively, decide to break that mold.

Their decision was to NOT charge a client an overdrive at 450 miles, but rather at 501 miles.

This was a HUGE move on their part. Unheard of in the industry. They were mocked and ridiculed by their esteemed colleagues in the industry.

BUT... They made a difference.

So, ever since 2005, our great drivers have made a significant difference to our clients every day with their overdrive structure, which starts at 501 miles, not at 450 miles like our competition!

Our drivers WILL save you money on your next tour!

THE 500,000 MILE CLUB

We are very proud of our drivers, especially those who have proven their dedication and commitment to Star Coaches over their many years of service...  And with years of service, comes miles driven...  Many miles driven!

500,000 miles is like driving across country over 200 times!  Most people NEVER drive across the United States!

We'd like to recognize those drivers who have logged over 500,000 miles with Star Coaches...

country artist tour buses

More often than not, when clients compare a Star Coaches proposal to our competitor's proposals, our proposal will "appear" to be more expensive.

Why? Because it is thorough...

It's NOT designed to be "pretty"...   it's designed to be accurate.   Actually, it is designed for you to end your tour BELOW the projected budget.

Don takes the time to prepare every single proposal for every single tour himself.

He suggests stop point cities on longer drives to keep a driver safe and legal.

While this level of thoroughness takes more time, it has been invaluable, especially for foreign clients that are not familiar with the geographical layout of the United States.

See for yourself what many consider to be the best, and most informative proposal in the industry, and then get ready to enjoy "coming in below budget" at the end of your tour.

TRAILER WEIGHT LIMITS…

Most of the time, this is not a problem, as most bands are staying within our 10,000 pound limit for GVWT (Gross Vehicle Weight, or a loaded trailer)...

By the way, for you Production Managers, our trailers weight about 4,500 pounds empty, leaving you about 5,500 pounds for the gear / merch...

Anyhow, a more frequent occurrence is that we find ourselves receiving a frantic call from our drivers at pick up stating that "this trailer is very heavy"...

So we instruct the driver to immediately weigh the full trailer, only to find that the GVWT is over 10,000 pounds... This becomes a new problem...

To battle this potential problem, we suggest making sure your packed load is less than 5,500 pounds, and if you must exceed that limit, act BEFORE the tour pick up...

Rent a box truck and a driver...

Star Coaches now has a small team of box truck drivers that can help solve the problem of a disaster at pick up...

If you can't get the gear to 5,500 pounds, let us know, and we will gladly assign one of our auxiliary drivers to your rented box truck from Hertz, Budget or UHaul...

Don't be THAT guy who is overweight at pick up...

Inside Celebrity Tour Buses: The Modifications Stars Make to their Mobile Homes

Who isn’t fascinated by celebrity homes? We love seeing the outrageous additions that adorn the mansions of the rich and famous. Couches worth tens of thousands of dollars, gourmet kitchens, and master bedrooms fit for royalty aren’t uncommon inside the homes of our favorite stars.

Not surprisingly, their mobile homes are no different.

For entertainers such as supermodels, singers, and even pro golfers, touring is what pulls in the most cash— a band can take home 35% of one night’s ticket sales plus up to 50% of the merchandise profits over one tour. Tirelessly entertaining dedicated fans from  New York to Chicago to Los Angeles  and every city in between, these celebrities may play up to 180 gigs in one year. When work requires such lengthy stretches of traveling on the road, comfortable mobile living space is a necessity.

While it seems a bit odd at first— why not just fly from one venue to another and save the time difference?— touring with a bus really is the most cost-effective and certainly the most convenient way to move a team around. These modified tour buses take away the stress of living out of a suitcase and provide celebrities with a “home base” where they can relax, unwind, and store all of their things in one consistent spot between appearances. It isn’t just a bus— it’s an office, a bedroom, a living room, a storage area, and a communal area to bond with your band and team, all in one big box on wheels.

Between living rooms, full bedrooms, and full bathrooms, celebrities work closely with companies that specialize in modifying tour buses to make them as homely and as comfortable as possible. These celebrities also tend to put a unique “touch” on their buses, some “touches” more outrageous than others. From leather couches to over-the-top back lounges, state-of-the-art kitchens, and even upstairs (yes, upstairs) lounges, celebrities certainly know how to get creative when it comes to building a unique “home away from home.”

All buses can be divided into four basic sections: a front lounge, which functions as a living room; a kitchen, or more typically, a “kitchenette;” a bunk area, where the band sleeps; and a back lounge, which is a bit of a “wild card” on these buses.

Keep reading to have a look inside the most extravagant celebrity tour buses we could find!

THE FRONT LOUNGE

A front lounge can usually seat about 10 people. They’re very “homey,” and great for socializing with band members and entourages or hosting friends and family. On either side of the lounge are usually couches, one of which is most likely placed on a “slide—” a mechanism that slides out when the bus is parked, adding up to 60 square feet of space and creating a proper living area.

front lounge of a celebrity tour bus

While some celebrities prefer to keep their lounges simple and sweet— as Kenny Rogers says of his humble wheeled abode, “You buy what you need and you fix it up great!” — others like to beef theirs up a bit with luxury couches, oversized TVs, or high-tech controls.

Tommy Lee’s coach features a cozy front lounge with two leather-upholstered couches costing $25,000 each.

The front lounge may also include some sort of “master control” for the entire bus. John Legend has an iPad connected to his bus’s server for controlling light settings, changing the television and music, and adjusting the air temperature. Stored right in the same server are over 1,000 movies so there’s always something good to watch on the road.

TVs are also a must-have for all front lounges, and you’d better believe they come big— Heidi Klum’s front lounge features a 46-inch screen embedded into the wall. Mariah Carey’s mobile castle features THREE 60-inch TVs plus an extra screen hidden behind her makeup mirror!

Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey ended up having two of our favorite mobile homes— we’ll explain why later.

Also included in many front lounges is a killer sound system that would compete with any typical grounded studio. The Eli Young Band’s bus includes a 12-speaker system that’s used for blasting music through after parties and rocking the bus on the road with their favorite albums. “Loud” is the best way to listen to music, right?

THE KITCHEN

After the lounge area comes the kitchen. On a typical RV, kitchens are almost nonexistent— it is, after all, quite difficult not only to store all of the usual kitchen equipment but also to make room for appliances such as a stove, oven, and microwave, not to mention necessary counter space and cabinets. On top of all of that, who even has time to cook for themselves while they’re busy playing shows? Kitchens simply aren’t a priority on the road for most. The usual mobile kitchen features are a coffee maker, an electric tea kettle, and a mini-fridge.

Kitchen on the bus of a celebrity

John Legend’s bus, however, houses a full stove top, a toaster, a microwave that doubles as a convection oven, and extra cabinet space for preparing gourmet meals in between performances.

Despite limited space, though, alcohol is always a priority. For entertaining an entourage and unwinding after big shows, drinks on-demand are a must-have. Gwen Stefani’s coach includes a wine chiller, always stocked with a wide selection of her favorite blends.

Jake Owen’s kitchen even has a beer tap— every time his band stops in a new city, they will make an agreement to trade show tickets with a local brewery in exchange for a local beer on-tap on the bus.

Ron White’s kitchen features a hidden-away humidor with two sides— one for his cigar stash, and one for his scotch.

Brad Pitt’s mobile kitchen takes the cake. His features all of the amenities of any usual kitchen— the stove, the oven, the microwave, the counter, and the cabinet space— plus a built-in full refrigerator and dishwasher, totaling a cost of $60,000 just for the kitchen— more than double what the average person spends on a kitchen remodel in their house!

Past the usual mobile kitchen, you’ll find the bunks. Sleeping on a bus sounds painfully uncomfortable, right? The way most celebrities do it, it doesn’t have to be. Typically, each bunk features its own mini television, a curtain for privacy, individual controls for air conditioning and lighting, and sometimes memory foam mattresses! The average tour bus bunk is just about the size of a regular twin-size bed.

bunk interior of a celebrity tour bus

Lee Brice, however, took it up a notch on his bus with custom oversize bunks, which they call “condo bunks,” that feature all the regular amenities at a slightly larger size for extra comfort.

Many celebrities report that sleeping in mobile bunks isn’t so bad— the movement of the bus has a tendency to rock them to sleep, which is necessary considering the grueling daily schedules they may keep during a tour.

Most buses can accommodate 6-8 bunks, in which everyone can have their defined private space separate from everybody else. You’ll usually see pictures of family, charging outlets, and various other personal belongings inside each bunk.

THE BACK LOUNGE

Back lounges are where we find some of the most unique modifications.

For the most part, celebrities keep the back lounge as their private bed area— everyone needs their own quiet space, right? There’s usually a master bathroom included in the back, too, with a full shower, walk-in closet, and counter space. Tommy Lee’s master bathroom includes a full-size shower with a TV in the wall, and a closet with a fuzzy rail to keep hangers from sliding while the bus is moving.

John Legend’s master suite includes a plush queen-sized bed that slides out just like the couches in the front lounge. Also in his master suite is a 5.1 surround-sound system, with a subwoofer under the bed to make movie-watching in the back even more exciting.

hemphill brothers back lounge on a celebrity tour bus

Back lounges are more than just bedrooms, though. Travis Barker’s master bed folds up into the wall with the push of a button, creating the perfect private space for practicing his drums. He’s also made room for not just one, but two bathrooms on his coach, so there’s never any fighting over who’s getting the coveted bathroom space.

Laura Bell Bundy had a dance studio built in her back lounge, complete with a full-length mirror and a ballet bar, allowing her to practice routines between shows.

Ashley Monroe’s back room has been dubbed a “girls-only zone,” where she and her girlfriends can get ready for shows together and stay secluded from the rest of her band.

However, back lounges also have many more specific uses, such as that of Hunter Hayes— situated in the back of his bus is a full recording studio, in which he makes serious progress on all of his current songs. The studio features a mixing station, multiple monitors, and 5.1 surround sound. In it, he’s finished 20-30 demos while on the road.

Our favorite back room, though, belongs to Jeff Dunham— he has a full workshop in the back of his bus where he can not only construct but also repair his puppets while on the road, ensuring that they remain in pristine condition for shows.

Now, if all of this makes you roll your eyes and say, “of course they have all that, they’re celebrities!” Just wait— we aren’t quite finished yet.

Have a look inside these 3 over-the-top celebrity homes. These coaches are so spectacular that we couldn’t even single out our favorite features above!

Supermodel Heidi Klum is the proud owner of what is possibly the “greenest” mobile home on the planet. Her office on wheels is the world’s only 100% solar-powered RV, packed with countless other “green” modifications throughout the interior and exterior.

The designers of this eco-friendly coach took great care in conserving energy in every way possible when constructing Heidi’s mobile workspace. All throughout the RV are energy-efficient LED bulbs, which draw less power and don’t add heat to the coach; and high-grade eco-friendly fabric, covering the floor and upholstery. Located by the living space is a control panel, at which one staff member is tasked with ensuring that the RV runs exclusively off of solar power for as long as possible (in the event of an emergency, the coach can easily be switched to draw power from a generator).

With a floor plan that more closely resembles a luxury hotel room than a motor home, this coach includes a total of 320 square feet of living space, including a couch, a loveseat, and a 42-inch TV. Without a bunk area like most other buses, the main living space flows into a spacious kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, a desk made completely out of recycled wood, and a small sink. The back room serves as a makeup area and dressing room, complete with an oversize mirror surrounded by eco-friendly lights, and a professional- grade hair-washing sink.

MARIAH CAREY

country artist tour buses

Just the front lounge and kitchen of Mariah Carey’s mobile mansion cover 600 square feet— bigger than most New York studio apartments! The lounge includes a 15-foot custom couch, a 25-foot slide on one side, and a 30-foot slide on the other. Facing the oversized couch is a 65-inch TV, connected to a 5.1 studio-grade surround-sound system. In the back is a full kitchen with a full stove top, refrigerator, convection oven, and a kangen water machine— a $4000 water ionizer designed to purify tap water by removing alkaline minerals.

Right by the kitchen is Mariah’s makeup station featuring a mirror surrounded by makeup lights, with a TV placed directly behind the surface of the mirror so that Mariah can watch her favorite shows while she’s getting her hair and makeup done.

Fantastic, right? We would expect nothing less from a star of Mariah’s status. But guess what? The top of this bus expands to an entire second story . That’s right— this bus is two stories tall when parked.

The second floor of this skyscraper on wheels is connected to the first by a marble staircase. Upstairs, you’ll find unique lighting with a color wheel, creating the perfect mobile dance club for Mariah and her entourage. Wrapping around the back of the dance floor is a 35-foot rounded couch that can seat up to 30 people, facing two more 60-inch TVs, one placed at either end of the bus.

All of the over-the-top amenities in this luxurious mobile tour home, which includes more than two tons of marble and stone, bring the cost to a staggering $1.8 million.

STEVE ELKINGTON

country artist tour buses

Pro golfer Steve Elkington takes the grand prize for the most insane mobile home modifications. His stunning mobile estate, which he’s nicknamed “The Big Show,” is an astounding 1,130 square feet, spread over two stories just like Mariah Carey’s moving castle. Standing in Steve’s over-the-top estate feels less like being in a bus and more like being in a cozy cottage— the coach is modeled after a golf clubhouse, meant to have that “19th-hole” vibe that all golfers love. Included in this wheeled mansion are a full washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a living room, a pro shop, a shoe rack, and a master suite, all on one massive mobile manor.

The kitchen features a full gas stove, an oven, and high-end appliances, with a restaurant-style booth for dining. The living room features a typical slide on the right side with the couch, adding even more square feet to the home. Just past the living room is Steve’s own putting green and a pro shop, where guests can come in and browse some of his golf gear. Next to the shop is his personal shoe rack and a station for cleaning and polishing his collection of shoes.

Right by the stairs are the full washer and dryer, tucked away in their own closet for when it’s time to take care of a few chores.

The roof lifts 35 feet to reveal a master suite, complete with a queen-size bed and a pop-up tv disguised as a cabinet at the foot of the bed. The TV screen can swivel to face the master bed or the two plush chairs that Steve and his wife often use to read or relax between games.

Finally, the home is completed with a luxurious master bathroom by the bed area.

From leather-upholstered living rooms to walk-in closets to upstairs dance clubs, we can’t say that we aren’t a little jealous of these luxurious buses . With living on these spectacular mobile mansions and simultaneously touring for months at a time year after year, it’s clear that these celebrities know how to work hard and play hard.

The Bus Of Brad’s Dreams

Since country music artists spend a lot of time out on the road, it’s essential for them to have a comfortable and good-lookin’ tour bus. This is something that  Brad Paisley  was well-aware of when it came time for him to design his own bus.

country artist tour buses

As far back as he can remember, Paisley has always been a “car guy.” Even though he’s had a love of automobiles for years, he wasn’t always able to buy the car of his dreams.  As he told Jay Leno an episode of  Jay Leno’s Garage , his first car was less than glamorous:

“ I actually sang and I played a lot of acoustic shows ,” Paisley said. “ I would get a couple hundred bucks every time. Before long, I had $3,000 dollars, and I bought my Chevy Cavalier. ”

The 1984 Cavalier was a far cry from Paisley’s dream car…a Corvette.

Hard to get better than this… It's @BradPaisley 's 61 Corvette! The video shoot is open to the public, so c'mon down! @NC5 pic.twitter.com/3JZKic37GQ — Jesse Knutson (@Jesse_ACM) April 15, 2017

He told Leno he had wanted one since he was young. So once he hit country superstardom he was quick to snatch one up:

“ I guess it was in the 2000s, I bought a used ’99 C5. Great car! ” he said, “ To me, [it’s] the most iconic American automobile. It just really is the flagship for our country. When you come back from the war, you should be given a Corvette! ”

Even though Paisley had a 1999 Corvette, the 1958 model is he favorite. He loves the car so much in fact, that he had his tour bus custom-made to resemble one.

All The Details…

  • Price Tag: $1.74 Million
  • Torque: 1,650 foot-pounds

Just as impressive as the technical specs is the appearance of the bus. The outside is sharp and sleek, with red, white, and silver markings. But just wait until you see the interior!

https://www.facebook.com/CNBCMakeIt/videos/1363153303746164/

The Corvette theme continues throughout the inside of the bus .

Black leather seats line the walls, and chrome details accent the cabinets and drawers. Paisley didn’t leave any detail unturned, and even went so far as to include a checkered flag pattern on the floor of the bus’ main room.

If you were a country artist and you could design your bus any way you wanted, what would it look like?

Paisley is so devoted to automobiles, he even recorded a song for a movie about them! You may have heard Rascal Flatts ‘ “Life is a Highway” from the Cars soundtrack, but have you ever heard the song Paisley contributed?

It’s titled “Find Yourself,” and it’s definitely worth listening to. You can do so below.

Country Music Superstar Jason Aldean’s Tour Bus is Jaw-Dropping [Video]

Country music singer-songwriter Jason Aldean ‘s tour bus is literally a rolling family home! Besides housing the star, the ‘home on wheels’ is also occupied by his wife Brittany and their two young children, Memphis and Navy .

“Well in a bus, you’ve got to get creative,” Aldean recently explained about his new ride to multiple media outlets. “You’re going down the road and you take a turn too fast and both babies come rolling out into the middle of the floor. You’ve got to get pretty creative on those buses. It’s crazy what they do on them these days. From my first bus, I had this Indian mural thing painted on the back of it, to the bus we’re in now, it’s crazy how far they’ve come and the stuff they can do to them now.”

Currently, Jason Aldean’s tour bus has two kid-friendly enclosed beds that help the little ones sleep soundly and safely.

“We just went in and said, ‘All right, we’re going to have two babies on the road. We’ve got to figure out a way to keep them in the bunk,'” the country music star shared. “And that’s what they came up with.”

The family just got the bus this year, so let’s take a peek at Jason Aldean’s Tour Bus with Jason and Brittany!

Ummm, those two zip up cribs are amazing! And so is that snapshot of Jason with George Strait in their bedroom…

As expected, Jason Aldean’s tour bus is jaw-dropping and looks like a very comfortable place to live while out on the road. The man obviously loves catching football games— there’s even a television in the master bath area so he don’t miss anything while showering. That’s dedication.

Share this look inside Jason Aldean’s tour bus with other fans!

“We Back” Lyrics

Where’s the guy in the steel toes, covered in dirt Just a Rock N Roll T-shirt, headed to work With a pack of Red Man in his pocket He’s kinda red, man, but he’s rockin’ Wears a beat up Tele’ and Marshall stack Little Marshall Tucker and a six pack Where’s the good ole boys and the good ole days Straight up getting sideways

Where’s the chick wearing blue jeans a little too tight? Got a grip on koozie if it what she likes Getting picked up in a pick-up And kicking it with guys like us

We back, we back, we back in the speakers Back in black, getting blasted in the bleachers It’s probably true what my momma said I do it just like my daddy did We back, we back, we back in the saddle Back on stage making the whole place rattle Back with the A-team, train on the track Thought we were gone but you’re wrong Now it’s on, we back

Sun comes up and sun goes down Yeah, everything good comes back around We back! We back!

(We back, we back!) Thought we were gone but you’re wrong (In your speakers) Now it’s on, we back (We back, we back!) (It’s probably true what my momma said)

We back, we back, we back in the saddle Back on stage making the whole place rattle Back with the A-team, train on the track Thought we were gone but you’re wrong Now it’s on, we back

See inside the $1.5 million luxury tour buses celebrities like Drake and Doja Cat use

  • Dreamliner Luxury Coaches builds plush homes on wheels for touring A-list musicians and their crew.
  • The company says it rents its 190 luxury tour buses to musicians like Drake, Doja Cat, and Olivia Rodrigo.
  • Rent for a full-service artist bus — a more than $1.5 million vehicle — starts at $50,000 a month.

Insider Today

Your favorite musicians probably all use a company you've probably never heard of: Dreamliner Luxury Coaches .

Going on tour involves more than just moving a musician from one city to the next. This is where Dreamliner comes in. The Nashville, Tennessee-based company is no typical bus operator like The Jet or Greyhound. Instead, its bread and butter is providing touring A-list musicians and their crew with luxury hotel rooms on wheels.

You'll definitely recognize some of Dreamliner's clients

The company's genesis can be traced back to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, founder Rich Thomson purchased 12 tour buses from an individual who needed to get out of a personal guarantee. Three years and the acquisition of two more coach operators later, the company now runs a fleet of 190 buses and flexes a Rolodex of celebrity clients like Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, and SZA.

Country musicians — think the likes of Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton — rent these coaches annually, Jeremy Maul, Dreamliner's CEO, told Insider. He says he's also helped with all of The Weeknd's tours. According to Maul, even Taylor Swift's team has sought support from Dreamliner, although the singer has been known to travel in her private jets instead.

"We're the bus company you call when you've made it," Maul said, adding that about 95% of its clients are musicians. "We work with the big runs like the Beyoncés and the Zach Bryans."

Related stories

Besides these celebrities, the company also has corporate clients that will rent for events like meetings and corporate trips. These luxury hotel rooms on wheels are so popular, Thomson says Dreamliner's fleet is on the road for about 300 days a year with the average tour running for approximately 60 days — or longer if it's a country artist.

What it takes to build a fleet of $1.5 million buses

Dreamliner's 190 buses include different layouts like crew, star, and executive. The latter is geared towards corporate clients while "stars" are designed for musicians. The typical "crew" bus — for travelers who support the main act — can accommodate up to 12 people.

For an average arena tour, an artists' team will rent between 10 to 15 buses. For stadium runs like Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, expect 15 to 20.

To build the mobile hotel rooms , Dreamliner typically acquires bus shells with only a dashboard, driver's seat, and steering wheel.

At the company's facilities in Nashville and Fontana, California, these bare-bone vehicles are then outfitted with plush amenities like mattresses with 900-thread-count sheets and bathrooms with showers.

Additions like Nespresso machines, smart TVs, and Le Labo candles create a true luxury feel. Some buses even come with a music studio for artists who want to record on the road.

Dreamliner's CEO says these post-conversion coaches are worth $1.5 million to $2 million each. Rent for one full-service "star" bus starts at $50,000 a month, which includes necessities like a driver, gas, cleaning services, and WiFi.

Following the recent acquisition of Hemphill Brothers, Maul says the company's only competitor is Senator Coaches, which predates Dreamliner. But he says there's a key differentiator between Senator and Dreamliner: The former is focused on massive rock bands like U2 while the latter targets younger artists like Drake and Justin Timberlake.

"We don't have a lot of small entry-level artists," Maul said. "Once you're a bigger band and you're on a larger or year-round tour, that's when you're going to want to work with us."

Loretta Lynn’s Vintage Eagle Tour Bus Up For Sale

Trigger News Badfinger , Faron Young , Loretta Lynn , Perley Curtis , Sugarland , Vassar Clements --> 16 Comments

loretta-lynn-bus-top

A vintage baby blue 1977 Eagle tour bus that was once used by a host of country legends, including bluegrass maestro Vassar Clements, Country Music Hall of Famer Faron Young, and eventually landed in the fleet of Loretta Lynn, is currently up for sale on eBay by the current owner. It was the property of Loretta Lynn’s guitarist Perley Curtis until it eventually landed in the hands of a politician named Kenneth Koph, who sold it to its current owners, the 7 Degrees of Change Foundation, which helps promote global literacy.

“ We had no idea about the musical heritage until I started researching,” said Brad Barth of 7 Degrees of Change. “It has been an interesting project to say the least!”

Vassar Clements is believed to be the very first owner of the bus before landing in the hands of Faron Young and Perley Curtis. Somewhere along the way, it’s also believed to have been used by the band Badfinger, who once had a big hit with “Baby Blue,” made famous again after being featured as the final song in the television series Breaking Bad , and not a bad name for the blue Eagle bus. It was also featured in the very first video for Sugarland, back when they were a trio, not a duo (and actually played country music).

The bus Sleeps 8 or more, has a bathroom, 2 flat screen TV’s, a music system, 2 DVD players, microwave, surround speakers, 6 bunks, 1 private bedroom, air horns, refrigerator, 2 apartment-style air conditioners, and floor access panels to get to the top of the motor from inside the bus if ever needed.

Loretta Lynn recently suffered a mild stroke, but according to her brother Herman Webb, she is recovering well and is up and walking.

More information can be found on the eBay listing for the bus .

Would be nice to see a young female country artist rollin’ in this old bus. I bet some nice country songs were written there… if walls could talk…

I think I’m going to bid on it, if the price stays this low.

The fact of it being Faron Young’s tour bus makes it more exciting to me. I wanna hear those stories. I’m sure there’s at least one to rival the bus tales in the George Jones bio.

Loretta Lynn’s Silver Eagle tour bus was a 1972 model. Not a 1977.

Your correct Rick, also the band Badfinger was no longer together as of April of 75′. Badfinger toured the U.S. in a Greyhound Scenicruiser

I was reading an article in “Wide open Country” magazine that stated the rock band “Badfinger” toured the U.S. in Loretta Lynn’s 1977′ Eagle coach, that is “IMPOSSIBLE”, Badfinger fell apart and disbanded in 1975 when Pete Ham (driving force and lead member) committed suicide. When Badfinger toured the U.S. they used a “Greyhound Scenicruiser”.

How Do Musicians Travel On Tour?

As a non-musician, you might be curious about how musicians actually travel on tour. Whilst it’s tempting to conjure up images of private jets and limousines, you’d be right in thinking that this is an unrealistic depiction of touring life.

So, how do musicians travel on tour?

For a cross-country tour, musicians will travel in either a van or a tour bus, depending on their budget, schedule and the size of their crew. When heading overseas, musicians will travel on either an airplane or a cruse ship, depending on their popularity and tour schedule.

Keep reading for a full account of each mode of transport used by touring musicians:

Table of Contents

CROSS-COUNTRY

Vans are most-often used by musicians who are at the beginning of their careers. Unlike a tour bus, a van serves as a more affordable, low-risk and suitable option for artists with no stable income or regular touring schedule.

  • Affordable: Sizeable vans can be hired for as little as $25 per day. Musicians with a more regular touring schedule also have the option of purchasing a used van for just a few thousand dollars. Similarly, vans are cheap to run and usually don’t require ongoing mechanical work. As most vans can be driven with a regular driving license, musicians won’t have to hire a dedicated driver or invest in additional driving qualifications.
  • Convenient : If a musician has a sporadic touring schedule, they can simply rent a van when needed and not have to worry about the vehicle in-between shows. As vans can easily be parked on the street or in a regular car park, musicians should be able to park as close to the venue as possible, allowing for an easy load-in/load-out.
  • No sleeping quarters:  Whilst  some musicians choose to sleep in their van, it’s certainly not a practical or desirable option. Therefore, they will likely have to stay at a hotel or hostel when touring for consecutive days, which can counteract the affordability of the van itself.
  • Limited facilities: Unlike a tour bus, a van doesn’t come with a bathroom, kitchen or lounge. This means frequent stops will have to be made and money will have to be spent on bathroom trips and ready-made food. When on the road or waiting at a venue, musicians can quickly become bored due to the lack of entertainment facilities.
  • Who drives the van? The van is usually driven by either one of the musicians or a crew member. On small-scale tours, musicians may employ one or two crew members who take on multiple roles (for example, a crew member may act as a tour manager, driver and sound engineer).
  • Do musicians usually rent or buy a van?  If a musician’s touring schedule is infrequent, they’ll usually rent a van to avoid having to worry about it in-between shows. When dealing with a more intense touring schedule, buying a van often serves as a financially-superior option.
  • Where does the equipment go?  The equipment will either go in the back of the van or in a small trailer that the van tows.

In today’s industry, full-time musicians generally rely on touring to form the bulk of their income.

Once an artist is touring regularly and playing to thousands of people each night, they will almost-always make use of a tour bus for nationwide tours. With a larger crew, increased workload and sizeable budget, a tour bus serves as an efficient and preferable option for musicians who are touring on a larger scale.

  • Efficient: A tour bus can sleep up to 16 people, which is much more efficient and affordable than purchasing a handful of hotel rooms each night. It also allows the bus to travel from venue to venue overnight, making the entire operation much more productive.
  • Affordable : Musicians who make use of a tour bus will often be signed to a decent-sized record label with good touring agency connections (or, sometimes, an in-house touring agency). This means that they’ll be able to get a good deal on the vehicle, enabling them to stay as profitable as possible. As most tour busses have both a bathroom and a kitchen on-board, the musicians can save money on groceries and bathroom trips.
  • Luxury: As you might’ve guessed, a tour bus is much more comfortable than a van. The musicians will have access to various forms of entertainment (notably TV’s/video game consoles) and be able to sleep on the bus.
  • Inconvenient to park :  Many venues, whist of adequate size, don’t have dedicated parking. As a result, tour busses occasionally have to park some distance from the venue, causing inconvenience to the musicians and crew.
  • Clashing sleeping schedules: Different crew members will often have  very  different sleeping patterns from one another. For example, the driver will have to sleep in the daytime in order to drive the bus at night. Therefore, the musicians may not be able to make full use of the on-board facilities during the day out of respect for other crew members.

Tour Bus FAQ

  • Who drives the tour bus?  Tour busses will almost-always have a dedicated driver. The driver may be employed by an agency or by the musicians themselves.
  • Do musicians usually rent or buy a tour bus? Unless they’re making  serious  money, musicians will usually rent a tour bus. This is especially-relevant for artists who tour all over the world (it’s not financially viable to own a fleet of tour busses collecting dust around the globe).
  • Where does the equipment go?  If the tour features large-scale stage production, a separate truck will be hired for the equipment. If the production is more modest, the equipment will go in a trailer that the tour bus tows.

Air travel is the go-to  method for musicians travelling overseas. Being both accessible and convenient, it serves as a suitable option for bands and artists of  all sizes.

When touring a particular country, most bands and artists will map out a route that enables them to travel by van or bus. This saves them having to dart all over a country via airplane.

  • Efficient:  Musicians can fly virtually anywhere within a matter of hours. This enables them to complete various tour legs back-to-back and make the most of their time in each country.
  • Exhaustion:  Whilst air travel is extremely efficient, it’s all-too-easy for musicians to over-book themselves and have no time off. On top of this, it’s likely they’ll be dealing with jet lag  whilst executing a jam-packed touring schedule. This can seriously affect their ability to perform and eventually result in exhaustion.
  • Lost luggage:  With a regular touring schedule, it’s almost-guaranteed  that a musician will have their luggage lost at some point. As they’ll start travelling around the country as soon as they arrive, souring and collecting their lost luggage can be  hugely  inconvenient.
  • Expensive:  Whilst single airline tickets may be inexpensive,  they add up over time.  When conducting a large-scale international tour, airfare can put a  significant  dent in a musician’s budget.

Airplane FAQ

  • What class do musicians fly?  Whilst it might surprise you, the  vast  majority of professional musicians (yes, even the well-known ones!) fly coach on a commercial airline to keep their costs as low as possible.
  • Where does the equipment go?  When flying overseas, it’s common for musicians to only take their instruments  with them, checking them in as handheld luggage. Additional equipment (amplifiers, PA system etc.) are then rented whilst overseas.

Cruise Ship

Cruise ships are becoming an increasingly-popular option for small-time musicians travelling overseas due to the fact that they can work as on-board performers.  This is a  huge  opportunity as the musicians are essentially  getting paid  to travel overseas in a luxury environment.

  • Potential to earn: Musicians can apply for a short-term contract as a  cover band.  When working on a cruise ship, they’ll usually receive free (or heavily discounted) food & accommodation, meaning they’ll likely come away with a profit. This extra income can help small-time musicians fund an overseas tour.
  • Extra experience:  There’s no doubt that working on a cruise ship will bring heaps of practical experience to a small-time musician. A cruse ship may also stop at several other countries en-route, allowing the musicians to experience various different cultures.
  • Time off:  The average cruise gig for a guest musician will last between one and two weeks. It’s likely the musicians will only have to work for three or four hours a day, allowing them plenty of time to relax and prepare for the upcoming tour.
  • Luxury: Guest musicians are often able to make full use of the luxury passenger facilities instead of the crew facilities.
  • Inefficient: Cruise ship gigs can be few and far between, meaning a musician may have to plan an  entire tour  around the cruise ship gig itself (unlike air travel, where there are several opportunities to fly each day). Additionally, it takes at least several days to travel from place to place, which can be inefficient for musicians with a particularly busy touring schedule.
  • Extra work required: In order to perform on a cruise ship, musicians will have to devise a 2 hour cover song set. This can take a substantial amount of effort and may leave the musicians performing music they don’t particularly care for.

Cruise Ship FAQ

  • How do musicians obtain a short-term cruise ship gig? Musicians will have to audition through an agency, who then places them on their roster. Work will be offered to the musicians as and when it becomes available.
  • Are musicians treated as guests or crew?  For guest contracts (i.e. for a single voyage), musicians will often be treated as guests. This allows them to make full use of the passenger facilities.

At Stagecoach, Black Country Artists Have Something To Say

Giddy up, ya’ll. Over the weekend, Stagecoach, California’s largest Country music festival, saw one of its most diverse lineups since its inception, with nine Black acts featured across three days. Essence had boots on the ground this weekend, sitting with six of these artists, each of whom affirmed in their own ways: Country music is for everybody, but it’s especially for Black people .

Tanner Adell, Leon Bridges, Miko Marks, Willie Jones, Brittney Spencer, The War and Treaty, RVSHVD, Shaboozey, and even Wiz Khalifa graced Stagecoach 2024 with their own sets for the first time. This wave of “firsts” brought with it an electrifying energy to the Stagecoach stages; “a returning to” Country, as Michael Trotter Jr. of The War and Treaty frames it.

Stagecoach had never been on my radar despite being a California local – that is, until I saw this year’s lineup. While on the festival grounds, I experienced a handful of less-than-friendly encounters, politically coded chants, and comments rooted in exoticized fascination (we all know the kind), all of which were to be expected for the territory. But, I also experienced many beautiful moments that displayed how diverse, collective, and welcoming the Country space is. Black festival-goers seemed to naturally gravitate towards each other, with one North Carolinian spotting me out in the crowd and sharing how after attending Stagecoach for ten years, he’s overjoyed to see more of our community embracing a genre we have long-standing roots in .

At Stagecoach, Black Country Artists Have Something To Say

For an artist like Willie Jones, seeing the reception and support of Black country artists “is a dream come true,” and pushes him to want even more for the collective. In conversation, each artist pointedly named another, singing each other’s praises and showing in real time what support for their small-knit community looks like. From Randy Savvy and the Compton Cowboys spreading Black cowboy culture awareness to Marks recounting how the Bill Pickett Rodeo gave her her first platform, so many facets of Black country culture came together to lift each other up.

The mutual feeling expressed by each performer can only be described as elation. To Spencer, being embraced on that stage for her artistry felt, “empowering [to see] the future of country music make space for different kinds of people.”

The Stagecoach platform provides an opportunity to connect with country fans and show them that, “we’re here,” as Shaboozey enthuses. They delve into how it feels to perform for audiences that may not always reflect them physically. Some express the occasional discomfort while others describe their goals of creating a universal experience through music that transcends physical identity. Spencer highlights how as Black people, “we listen to music where we see ourselves,” and echoes the interests of the collective who aim to show the community that this too can be possible in Country music. Trotter expresses, “not only do we want [the Black community] at our shows, we need them there.”

Adell focuses on curating an authentic space for her audience, “For me, I want to show up in ways that I don’t have to [explain] why I did something,” she affirms as she references her choices to wear bantu knots to the CMT Awards or bring out the Harbin Sisters , six black girls, to dance with her on the Stagecoach stage. “I did that because, the people who need to see that, if you know, you know, and they knew. And if you didn’t, then it wasn’t the message for you.” Her Stagecoach set was earlier in the day, and was still met with the most vibrant of crowds, “that just speaks volumes about [the presence of] the Black community.” She goes on to say, “women alone have a harder time breaking through in country music, let alone women of color. I’m grateful for our community.”

Reclaiming a space that has long been defined by homogenous gatekeepers can be taxing, as Marks underlines in speaking to her ten-year hiatus from the genre. “I was just heartbroken because Nashville and the industry wasn’t accepting. They loved the music, but they didn’t like me and how I presented it.” As a “seasoned” figure in this genre, she speaks to how beautiful her return has been, how she’s evolved since, and reflects on this era of country music now. As grateful as she is for the heightened focus they are currently experiencing (thank you Cowboy Carter!) she also wants Black artists to be respected for the work they’ve been putting in.

The Cowboy Carter alumni present discuss what they’ve taken from the collaboration and where they aim to go. Jones appreciates the organization that went into the creative process, Adell has learned the art of applying confident patience to her work, and Spencer definitively states that she’s learned “I belong.” Among much else, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter has shown what expansive qualities Black musicians bring to the genre when they aren’t boxed in.

On navigating spaces where others attempt to restrain him, Willie Jones states that he simply “doesn’t give a f*ck.” Jones is refreshingly himself in every room he enters, as he made immediately evident upon sitting down with Essence. He speaks to his love of what he calls, “cultured country,” talks about his excitement for what Black musicians bring to the table, and pays little mind to the close-minded bubbles.

“Music doesn’t have any bounds. I’m doing it for the ancestors, for Shreveport, Louisiana,” Jones says. His music is heavily influenced by that classic Country sound, as well as Southern Hip-Hop. While this lends to an enticing sound that he welcomes all to enjoy, Jones also wanted Essence readers to know that he is, in fact, “for the gworls.”

The War and Treaty describe how they face the obstacles set before them and boil it down to this: love, unity, and discernment. Their love for the music, their calling, and each other is more than palpable. Tanya Trotter, one half of the powerful duo, explains the industry’s attempts to box her in as she transitioned from R&B to country music. “I wanted to do something different,” she expresses, and with one of her only examples of Black women in the space being Tracy Chapman, she emphasizes how important it is to be steadfast in yourself and your purpose.

At Stagecoach, Black Country Artists Have Something To Say

She highlights the broader industry’s tendency to label all Black artists as R&B , and points to Brittney Spencer, the Baltimore native who firmly presents herself as a country artist. “It’s beautiful and it’s challenging,” Spencer offers. Black artists are often saddled with additional pressures or labels due to a racial identity completely out of their control. Where they should be able to express art without the lens of their identity influencing so much, this is not the case, especially in Country music. On the other hand, this very identity informs and enhances the art they put forth.

The Trotters discuss the connectivity that is rooted in the Black musical tradition, “you don’t get country music without the blues; blues without jazz and folk; and you don’t get none of it without gospel and Negro spirituals. I think that there’s some reeducation and deconstruction that needs to happen. We have to stop thinking that it’s not for us.” Marks adds that she wants Black audiences “to know that country music is part of our heritage and our being, so go forth knowing that your roots are grounded in this music.”

Many of these artists are no stranger to genre-blending. From the aforementioned genres to hip hop and Americana, their masterful versatility sets them apart from the crowd, while also connecting them with the larger tradition of Black music. As Miko Marks describes for herself, “the basis of all that I do is Black music. That’s country, gospel, R&B, bluegrass, jazz, because we are the foundation of what was created. I don’t believe in being bound by a genre.”

At Stagecoach, Black Country Artists Have Something To Say

Shaboozey shares similar sentiments, “I’ve had so many eras,” he tells the crowd at his set, “but [the support] means so much to me.” He expands on the broader connections of the diaspora such as the origins of the banjo to West Africa, and how this history has informed his own creative process. He attributes his ability to organically fold in his eclectic taste and sound to his Nigerian and Southern identities. “African music and country music is world music. It’s the sharing of stories. [My identities] allow me to see the beauty and culture in everything around me.” After a decade of natural progression, Shaboozey’s powerful voice has carried him to this moment.

If Stagecoach’s response to these Black musicians is any indication of where the industry is headed, the future looks brighter. Tanner Adell had determined fans rushing across the fields to make her set, The War and Treaty ’s soulful voices filled the campgrounds and took us to church that Sunday afternoon, and Brittney Spencer ’s raw talent and vulnerability made everyone in her audience feel like, as she sings, a “homegirl”.

Willie Jones ’ rich personality and voice shined through his lively set on the Mane Stage, Shaboozey ’s surprise performance was met with a packed out crowd, RVSHVD’s buzzing, multi-generational audience sang along to every lyric, and Leon Bridges couldn’t utter a word without his audience erupting each time. The Compton Cowboys contributed to this atmosphere by providing cultural lessons and Q&A chats to all people interested in Black Western culture’s rich history.

It’s safe to say: The Yee-Haw Agenda is in full effect. For those of you who haven’t yet taken the leap, or are just starting to dip into the waters, this incredible lineup of Black Country stars is an excellent place to start. Now this ain’t Texas — it’s Stagecoach, but we’re out here.

Stagecoach 2024: The Five Artists You Just Can’t Miss

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

The buzz around this year’s Stagecoach Festival, kicking off Friday in Indio, California, is among the loudest in the country music fest’s 16-year history. Tickets sold out in less than a month after going on sale last September — hitting that mark months before sister festival Coachella — and giving Stagecoach its biggest sales ever. Credit that to the current country music boom and to a stellar lineup put together by Stacy Vee, EVP of festival talent for Goldenvoice, the promoter behind Coachella and Stagecoach.

“You can definitely feel all the eyes are on us right now,” Vee says. “Everything I do starts with a motto that I have written on all my materials: ‘Stagecoach is a place where everyone feels welcome.’ We are focused on creating the country culture of tomorrow. So, when I’m thinking about the lineup I want, it all to come back to that.”

Ahead of this weekend’s hoedown in the desert, we asked Vee for the five artists — excluding headliners — that fans just can’t miss at Stagecoach 2024.

Post Malone (Saturday, 8:15 p.m., Mane Stage)

Editor’s picks, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, willie nelson & family (saturday, 6:35 p.m., mane stage).

Willie is playing during sunset on the Mane stage. He’s always previously played on the Palomino stage, but I moved him to the main stage because he’s bigger than he’s ever been. If you look at the lineup, it’s intentionally curated with so many Texas artists that day,” says Vee, citing Lambert, Post Malone, Willie Nelson, Leon Bridges, Charley Crockett, and Asleep at the Wheel. “With so many of these artists knowing each other and being friends, I set the stage for a lot of collaborations and artists hopping on stage with each other.”

The Beach Boys (Sunday, 7:20 p.m., Palomino Stage)

Trump’s team has a plan to ensure he doesn’t go to jail for violating gag order, ted cruz wants airlines to keep your cash when they cancel your flight, kendrick did everything he needed to on ‘euphoria’, kendrick lamar brings in the ultimate age of the hater on drake diss track 'euphoria', carin león (friday, 6 p.m., palomino stage).

“Carin sells out arenas and is just an incredible regional Mexican artist who is stepping into the country space. He’s been writing and working with a lot of country artists lately, and I know how much this set means to him. I would love people to check him out if they’re not familiar.”

Nickelback (Friday, 11:10 p.m., Palomino Stage)

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

At BMAC Event in L.A., Mickey Guyton, INK and Other Panelists Assess What Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy’ Moment Means for Black Female Country Artists

Mickey Guyton, Caron Veazey, Dr. Jada Watson and INK at Black Music Action Coalition, in partnership with Billboard, presents "Act II: A Conversation Around Three Chords and the Actual Truth” held at Live Nation HQ on April 24, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.

The tide of Black women in country is a phenomenon that much of the world has suddenly become aware of, thanks to Beyoncé ’s “Cowboy Carter” and the lesser-known artists being championed through guest slots on the album. Does this mark the true signal change that advocates for diversity in country have long dreamed of? Or is the real progress within the ranks of the music industry that could allow young Black country artists so lacking that the current excitement might be destined to go down as a glorious blip?

Popular on Variety

In the future, will a young girl with Dianne’s inclinations be able to easily point toward just one? “Cowboy Carter” is giving a leg up to Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell and Tiera Kennedy. What comes next for them and others like them remains to be seen.

Watson cautioned that there is a huge disparity between the journalistic attention and any kind of airplay that extends beyond OK returns at country radio for “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

“Country radio really is the distribution engine that controls the industry,” Watson said, “and in 2023, songs by black women received 0.02% of the airplay. And so when ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ came out… I will stress that they played the song… Usually it takes six to eight weeks for a song to even debut on the chart, and it hit No. 29 on March 23. It’s starting to decline, and I have genuine concerns about that. But what’s happening is that country radio is not using that as a pathway. This was like a gift to say, here’s this phenomenal song by one of the most recognizable audience artists in the world. You’re not going to get a huger artist than Beyoncé handing you this… Play it, but also recognize that you have so many Black women in Nashville that you can play alongside it. You can play Mickey. You can play Rissi Palmer, Miko Marks, Tanner Adell, Reyna Roberts, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy. You can play Roberta Lea, Julie Williams, Madeline Edwards, a whole collective called the Black Opry, et cetera… If you remove ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ from radio, songs by Black women are currently receiving 0.02% of the airplay again, and if you add that song, it’s 0.24%. So we’re still not in a great place,” Watson added, in what may count as an understatement.

The odds are tough enough with the major-label support that Guyton has had, but among the artists name-checked by Watson, only Spencer is signed to a Nashville powerhouse. “I don’t think it hurts to mention names,” she said: “Both Tanner and Tiera lost their deals around the time that the Beyonce record came out.”

As far as INK is concerned, that development was probably for the best. “How stupid do you think Tiera and Tanner’s labels feel right now?” said the songwriter. “I’m glad they made that decision because now (the women are) empowered. It’s like you (the labels) don’t deserve to win, if you keep missing opportunities… I love the fact that (Kennedy and Adell) ate down on this album, they got dropped from the same label, and now they’re popping. Now they have the leverage.

INK has not released her own planned album yet, although she was recently featured on a hit by the Chainsmokers. But as a songwriter, the Atlanta native had only good things to say about how she has been received in that role in Nashville.

“Shout to Kacey Musgraves,” said INK. “I actually met Kacey because Parkwood, Beyonce’s company, sent us down there and it was (Beyoncé’s) idea for us to just go to Nashville and really be on the ground and working with those types of people.” Prophet interrupted her, saying, “ I don’t want to skip past that! You just said Parkwood sent you down there to work?” INK reiterated that Parkwood’s boss encouraged her writing stable to go to Tennessee and “bring that spirit” that was coming up in “Cowboy Carter” writing situations to Nashville. “With everything she represents, being from the South, she loves that.”

And with Musgraves, INK said, “Kacey was amazing. We made five songs in one day … We were writing a song and took a lunch break, and we were sitting on the couch, eating our food… and I just started singing something and Kacey goes, ‘Stop. What’s that? Whatever that is, put the chicken down.… I’m 100% real. This is special and you need to record this right now.’ So I recorded it in one take, and it’s actually gonna be a song that I’m gonna use for my album. But that’s what it takes. It takes people to recognize and to say, ‘This is something special. Let’s push it to the forefront and rally around this until it becomes special.’ Because I only got here by people recognizing the special, and I only got here by people wanting to help.”

Guyton also had positive experiences to cite, amid all the reasons for cynicism. In her separate Q&A at Live Nation, she said, “If I see someone that I think is talented, I am going to call anybody that I know and say, ‘Sign this person.’ For example, the War and Treaty is now signed to my record label. Cindy Mabe (the UMG Nashville chief) found them through me. And I know y’all know Ms. Tanya (Trotter) did ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’ in ‘Sister Act 2.’ That woman is everything to me. And that is how you see real change, using your platform to help someone else. We’re so in this ‘There’s only one spot’ mentality because we fought for wherever we are. … But you giving somebody else a platform isn’t gonna take away from you; if anything it’s going to make you look better.”

Referring back to music companies’ pledged commitments to do their part to enact reform in response to the racial controversies surrounding several racially charged murders four years ago, Guyton said, “You know, when this movement first happened in 2020, I was seeing change and we were allowing ourselves to have hope. And it’s 2024 now. And I’m so grateful for Beyoncé, because before that it felt like it was waning. Not felt like it  — it was. And even now, sometimes I still feel ike viral moments last like, what, two weeks? And then we’re onto the next.

“I’ve seen these viral moments happen. There’s a group called Chapel Hart that had this major viral moment on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ and they’re a super fun, Black, female country trio, and they could not get a record deal in Nashville. And I I don’t know what’s gonna happen, and that’s again why I will drill this in everybody’s mind, or I’m at least try to do that: We must show the monetary value in Black art. That’s really what it boils down to.”

Guyton grew emotional as she explained that “speaking out and calling out racism does come with a price, and I’m still healing from a lot of things that were were said to me when I was just trying to fight for equality in country music. Nothing more, nothing less. I wasn’t telling you who to vote for; I wasn’t telling you anything other than just give people an opportunity because they’re talented and they deserve the same chances… People said horrible things to me; up until before I was about to give birth to my son, I was cyberbullied, and the things that people were saying to me still mentally fuck with my head, to be perfectly honest. I have to stay off of social media and just still continue to do the work and try to show people: Hey, we’re here. Here we are in 2024 and y’all are just now finding out that I’m here. And it’s not your fault by any means.

“Nashville has been wanting to bridge the gap,” Guyton continued, “and I know a lot of artists that want to see Black people at their shows, but they don’t know how. And Nashville doesn’t necessarily know how to extend the arm and or extend the olive branch… When this was starting, I remember going up to my record label and I said, ‘I’ve learned to be comfortable being in a room full of people that don’t look like me. And now it’s your turn.’

“This is a new landscape,” Guyton concluded. “We may not see the true change that we want to see in our lifetime, but this right here gives me so much hope.”

“When this Beyoncé moment is done and all of our country fans are done with their boots and spurs, these Black country artists that you’re seeing and liking their posts, we will still remain. I’m still the only Black person in a lot of predominantly white spaces, like on actual boards, trying to help make decisions…  It’s so imperative that every single one of you, Black, white, whatever, show these corporations the monetary value in black art.”

Watson offered the audience at Live Nation historical context on how music came to be as segregated as it is, starting with, when the recording industry took the roots music that had common origins and separated it into “race” and “hillbilly” markets, the predecessors to today’s country and R&B/hip-hop worlds. “Every single decision that was made as a way to build the infrastructure and market music has been racially segregated,” Watson said, “and it is 100% percent still going on today. And if you think your DSPs are any different, they are not.”

Although the DSPs speak about promoting diversity, Watson said the algorithms keep underserved communities of artists in their own bubbles. “Spotify makes these curated playlists, right? So they have the Black country playlist, they have the Latino country Playlist, they have the women of country playlist, and so on. That’s the only place you’re going to find these artists, because they’ve been put in this digital siloed box. So if you then go to Rissi Palmer’s page and scroll down to the bottom and you’re looking for recommendations of who sounds like who, all of the artists at the bottom of the page are going to be the artists on the Black country playlist, because that’s the only place you see Rissi’s name in DSP training data is next to those other artists.”

Watson frankly cast doubts on how much this recent viral moment for Black female artists will create lasting results. “The streaming data suggests that there’s an appetite for it,” she said. “These four remarkable women who are all unsigned except for Brittney Spencer, their Instagram followers have gone up, their Spotify followers have gone up. their monthly listenership has bloody skyrocketed. But the concern — and this is where I am just nervous, and this is why you need to heed Mickey’s advice and stream — is that the conversion rate from followers to actual dedicated listeners has dropped to the floor. It’s one thing to go over and follow. It’s another thing to keep listening, keep streaming, come back, listen to new songs, listen to old songs, because actually that conversion rate is negative right now. And on the one hand, it’s fine because there’s still this rise in followers. But that’s going to plateau when Beyonce moves on to ‘Act 3.’ So, actually go and stream them consistently, and stay with them and follow them and go to their shows and buy their merch, because that conversion rate is troubling.”

In other words, these featured artists are only going to get so much help from a Beyonce co-sign if other promotional factors are not in play. Watson spoke of “the double bind of being a woman and a Black woman specifically in this space that is governed by white supremacy.” She said the fact that “the next generation is starting to come up and break through some of that systemic foundation” is countered by the fact that the problem may be “too ingrained, because they use the data that I’m talking about to make their business decisions. … They have yet to figure out that you actually need to put in women and artists of color to actually see them on the charts. You’re never going to get a chart that’s going to have Black artists or biracial artists or Mexican American artists if you aren’t putting them on radio, if you are not signing them to your labels, if you are not investing in their careers. You’re never gonna get it out if you’re never gonna put it in.”

A big part of the BMAC’s mission is to get more Black workers in positions of power — or any positions — in the industry so that these artists don’t seem so foreign. That is already happening to some degree in Nashville, as Guyton extolled just how many Black execs Mabe has hired since taking over the top spot at UMG Nashville. INK, for her part, spoke to being invited to a meeting of execs at BMI Nashville recently, and how receptive she found them, even though it was an all-white gathering, or seemed to be. The execs in question kept talking nervously about how they were waiting for a latecomer to show up, and INK was heartened to find the person in question turned out to be a Black woman in charge of marketing.

Watson put artist develpment historically in stark perspective: “Black artists have always been here, and I think this is a really important moment to say a few names. I’m just gonna name the Black women who have charted in country music. Let’s start with Linda Martel, who charted three songs in ’69-70. Then it was Ruby Falls, who charted nine songs in the 1970s. In 1974, the Pointer Sisters… Then in 1987, we have Dona Mason and Nisha Jackson, who each charted one song. In 1988, Kathy Bee charted a song. In 2008, Rissi Palmer charted three songs. And then in 2015, Mickey Guyton charted a song. And then in 2024, Beyonce charted ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’” The applause from the audience gradually died down as this list went on, as its brevity and the huge recent gaps became apparent. “I have literally just named every — excuse my language — fucking Black woman who has ever charted in the history of that industry. Every one of them.”

“Radio needs to change not only how they program, but how they also test audiences. Labels need to become more diverse so they can sign artists and then not put those artists in unsafe spaces. Because let’s face it, the touring circuit for country is a really problematic space for most Black audiences and Black musicians. So it really is holistic. You have to think about every level, from the artist to the songwriter, engineer, producer, everyone making the music, selling the music, promoting the music, distributing the music, and where it’s performed. It needs to be a wholesale wide, sweeping effort to understand the way in which this system is not safe in its current structure.”

Offered INK: “We need to be in the building, but a lot of times the building wasn’t built for us to enter. So if it was never designed for us to be in there, they’re just protecting what they feel like is theirs. So now it’s up to us to just come in and do our own thing. We’ve gotta open up our own Black country labels. It ain’t gotta be just for Black; if you’re white, we’ll sign you too, baby! If you’re rocking. But we have to have visions for ourselves and for our communities.”

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

country artist tour buses

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Viral Country Artist Don Louis Is Ready to Fight for Music Stardom: 'It's Always Been a Battle for Me' (Exclusive)

"I'm really bringing a new wave of country that I just couldn't find," he tells PEOPLE. "Nobody's done half of what I've done, and I'm not even halfway started"

country artist tour buses

Don Louis never seemed destined to be a country music star.

"I met a girl, got a girl pregnant, ended up dropping out of school, went to work at a sawmill and then started working building trailer homes," recalls Louis, 27, during an interview with PEOPLE. "But that wasn't my calling. I knew I wasn't supposed to just be out there building trailer houses."

Instead, at the time, Louis believed his true calling was to play football, which he proceeded to do as a superstar defensive end both at Ouachita Baptist University and Southern Arkansas University. "I was doing real good," he remembers. "I was in shape. I was a physical specimen. I kept getting invites to pro camps, but then I ended up getting a knee injury real bad."

Caylee Robillard

It's that knee injury that led Louis to where he finds himself right now: an accomplished singer/songwriter currently laying the bricks down to form a firm foundation in a genre he has loved since he was a little kid.

"I come from a 12-acre farm that's just mud all around us," Louis says of his East Texas upbringing that had him listening to Waylon Jennings, George Jones and Toby Keith just as much as he listened to Michael Jackson , The Weeknd and Kanye West .

Austin Leih

Crazy enough, Louis started playing the guitar just a handful of years ago. "I thought a lot of mediocre stuff was getting celebrated in America, and I thought I could figure it out," says Louis, who went viral on TikTok courtesy of his 2023 single " Neon You ." "I tried to write music that I wanted to hear that wasn't getting played, and now I got kids out here that want to pull the pants up and sing country. So, it's a blessing."

So too is the chance to tour the country, bringing his brand of music to an audience that seems to be craving it.

"I'm also going to be able to do hip-hop," says Louis, who shares the music video for his latest single " Long Time Comin' " on PEOPLE. "I'm also going to be able to do R&B and country and rock, and ain't nobody going to be able to stop me. I've just been taking over. Just got a kick in my shoulder for all the people that doubted me."

More importantly, Louis has a slew of famous supporters rooting him on.

"I left my town and went to Nashville and started making believers out of celebrities like Shaquille O'Neal and Jimmy Butler ," says Louis, who has also received the seal of approval from country music titan Jelly Roll and Beyoncé 's very own mother Tina Knowles . "It just feels amazing to see people who actually have a name underneath them showing any kind of love towards what you're doing."

Granted, Louis is the first one to admit that it's been a climb to get here, and that climb is far from reaching its completion.

"There was a time when I was like, 'I don't want to be cocky or conceited, but I feel like I'm putting the same amount of work on the same level as all these people and I'm not getting any kind of recognition,'" Louis remembers. "I was really upset there for a bit, but I ended up just focusing on my music. I stayed disciplined."

It's this discipline that has led him here, announcing the Aug. 23 release of his album Liquor Talkin’ . "I'm really bringing a new wave of country that I just couldn't find," he says. "Nobody's done half of what I've done, and I'm not even halfway started."

Certainly, those could be considered fighting words. But Louis knows that he is worthy of this fight for country music stardom.

"I don't like pulling the race card, but it gets pulled on me," he says. "Being a Black and white man, I've never quite fit into anywhere, and I've always had to grow a little stronger or be a little smarter, so they didn't try to hang my ass with just nonsense. I've always had to have this fight because I've never been given anything."

Even worse, people have started calling him lucky.

"I did the same three things every day," he says. "You didn't notice it because you don't ever pay attention. You don't see game day and you don't see the practice in between every day that you go out there and do the same thing." He pauses. "It's always been a battle for me. I have to have my head in the fight, but I got God on my side."

He lets out a laugh before admitting, "And I want to be famous, and I don’t know why."

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
