Top sights & attractions for cruises to bar harbor, acadia national park.

Acadia National Park is mostly located on Mount Desert Island and is home to the highest rocky headlands and mountain (Cadillac Mountain) along the east coast of the United States. Its sprawling beauty covers 47,000 acres and it is filled with towering trees and wildlife. Cruises to Bar Harbor provide a jumping off point for getting to Acadia National Park and a day spent there can be spent hiking on one of its 158 miles of trails (including ones to the top of Cadillac Mountain), or being driven along one of the park’s carriage roads, which are accented by 16 stone bridges. In addition to the natural beauty, you may see bears, moose, whales, and a variety of birds and other woodland creatures while making your way through Acadia National Park.

Thunder Hole

Located in Acadia National Park, Thunder Hole is a highlight of the park for many visitors – particularly if you love wave watching. Thunder Hole is a small cavern that is located on a rocky inlet. When a large wave come in, it’s forced out of that cavern like a loud clap of thunder and forms a water spout that goes high into the air, making for an exciting sight to see.

Jordan Pond

Jordan Pond is a gorgeous glacier-formed lake with strikingly clear water. Motor boats and swimming are not allowed, but you can kayak or canoe on the pond, and cruisers to Bar Harbor who are looking for a more adventurous way to spend the day may enjoy heading to Jordan Pond for some paddling.

Looking out over Jordan Pond is another popular tourist spot: the aptly named Jordan Pond House. It is a historic restaurant that has been in operation since 1890 (though the original building burned down in 1979). The thing to order here is tea with popovers, and afternoon tea on the lawn is an idyllic way to spend a summer afternoon while in Bar Harbor.

Whale Watching

Bar Harbor is located on the Gulf of Maine, which is home to a variety of whales. Depending on the time of year, you can see humpback, finback, and minke whales migrating through the waters of the Atlantic. A whale watching shore excursion will take you out to sea to search for the giant mammals and gets you up close to them so you can see the whales spout, breach, and more. On a whale watching shore excursion out of Bar Harbor, you also may see eagles, dolphins, porpoises, and possibly even puffins.

Lobster Boat Experience

Maine is famous for its lobster and you can learn more about how lobster is caught on a shore excursion that takes you onto a lobster boat for a demonstration of how lobster traps work. You’ll also learn more about the lobster fishing season in Maine and become educated on the Maine lobster itself. During your lobster boat ride you may spot other wildlife like bald eagles plus see some of the gorgeous views along the coastline of Mount Desert Island, including Egg Rock Light.

Great Cranberry Island

Great Cranberry Island is the largest of the five islands that make up the unique town of Cranberry Isles, Maine. You won’t find too much in terms of businesses and buildings on Great Cranberry Island, but you will find an idyllic slice of small-town island life with a tiny population mostly consisting of fishermen. You’ll also find peaceful nature to walk in, featuring forested shoreline and colorful wildflowers.

Asticou Azalea Garden

Learn more about the plants and flowers of Maine at Asticou Azalea Garden. Located in Northeast Harbor, Maine, it is a popular excursion for visitors who have a Bar Harbor, Maine cruise port of call. The garden was started by a local of the area in 1956. It has a 2.3-acre garden and picturesque pond. The lovely rhododendrons and azaleas are popular flowers to see during a stroll through the gardens.

Village Green

Located on the location of the old Grand Central Hotel, Village Green was created after the hotel was torn down in 1899 in order to give Bar Harbor some public open space. The beautiful park like space is home to one of Bar Harbor’s most famous landmarks: a cast iron clock that has stood in Village Green since 1905.

Culture & History of the Bar Harbor Cruise Port

The first known people to utilize the shores of Bar Harbor were the Wabanaki tribe, who would visit the area seasonally for fishing, clam harvesting, and to pick berries.

The area became known to the Europe in 1604 when French explorer Samuel de Champlain discovered it after damaging his boat on a nearby rock ledge. The community wasn’t settled by Europeans, though, until 1763 when English businessmen arrived and set up fishing, lumbering, and shipbuilding industries in Bar Harbor (known at the time as Eden after one of America’s earliest settlers, Sir Richard Eden).

In the 1800s the beauty of Bar Harbor began to attract the rich and famous from the mainland, who would build summer homes in Bar Harbor (the Rockefellers, Astors, and J.P. Morgan all had homes in the area), or would spend summer vacations in the town. After a devastating fire destroyed much of the town in 1947, tourism was hurt. The town eventually rebuilt and today it has a population of around 5,200 and is a popular tourist destination in Maine.

In addition to tourism, there is a large fishing industry in Bar Harbor and it is also home to the College of the Atlantic, Jackson Laboratory, and MDI Biological Laboratory. It is still frequented by prominent people, including the CEO of Burt’s Bees, who has a home on Mount Desert Island near Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor Port Facilities & Location

The Bar Harbor, Maine cruise port is a tender port of call, meaning cruise ships anchor a short distance off shore and passengers are ferried to the port terminal in smaller tender boats. The tender ride takes about 15 minutes. The main part of town is within walking distance of the Town Pier where passengers are dropped off by the tender boat. There is an information center at the Town Pier.

Transportation in Bar Harbor

Very few taxis are available in Bar Harbor. Luckily for travelers on a Bar Harbor, Maine cruise port of call, most attractions in the city are located within walking distance. For destinations outside the city, there’s the Island Explorer, which has eight bus routes that go to various locations around Acadia National Park. Shore excursions are also a convenient and fun way to get around the area while in port.

Shopping Near the Bar Harbor Cruise Port

Bar Harbor has many tourist shops and independently owned boutiques located near the harbor in the downtown area, with most located along Main Street and its adjacent side streets. For a souvenir unique to Maine, look for jewelry with a “watermelon” tourmaline stone, which is a special type of pink and green tourmaline that is mined in Maine. Other stores in Bar Harbor that are popular with souvenir seekers are the art galleries, antique shops, and craft stores located in the city.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The U.S. dollar is the accepted currency in Bar Harbor and the rest of Maine. Many ATMs are located within walking distance of the harbor. If you need to get cash right away after disembarking from one of the cruises to Bar Harbor, Maine, head to Bar Harbor Bank and Trust on Main Street that has an ATM as well as a currency exchange inside.

You can use credit cards at most places of business in Bar Harbor and surrounding areas, even if purchasing something that is just a few dollars. When in doubt, though, it’s good to double check accepted payment for a transaction if you aren’t able to pay in cash.

Tipping in Maine and all of the United States is prevalent and expected. For restaurants, taxis, and most other services, a tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill is customary.

The driver and the guide explained about the lobstering industry and we learned many facts. We went by Egg Rock Lighthouse and saw the seals sunning themselves. They pulled up two traps and found lobsters for us to see and pass around. The time went quickly, but it was a splendid way to spend the afternoon!

Overview: Visiting Bar Harbor, Maine on a Cruise

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • November 27, 2021

Located on the northeast shore of Maine’s largest island Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is a popular port on New England/Canada cruise itineraries and is the gateway to Acadia National Park.

Ships anchor in Frenchman Bay and tender passengers to the Town Pier, located just steps from the heart of downtown Bar Harbor. Visitors can easily set out on foot to explore this small, pedestrian-friendly town. You’ll find maps and tour information at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center just south of the pier. A free shuttle bus links Bar Harbor with neighboring villages and various locations in Acadia National Park.

The History of Bar Harbor

Originally named “Eden” after English statesman Sir Richard Eden, the town was renamed Bar Harbor in 1918 after the sandbar that is visible at low tide and connects Mount Desert Island to neighboring Bar Island. Visitors are drawn to the city’s stunning coastal scenery, specialty seafood, and quaint downtown shops.

Bar Harbor Maine Cruise

Bar Harbor has a long history as a summer retreat for writers and artists looking to escape city life. In the late 1800s, many of America’s most influential families built summer cottages on Mount Desert Island, including the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies. To this day, Bar Harbor is still a popular playground for celebrities, like Martha Stewart and Susan Sarandon who are also counted among the island’s part-time residents.

However, Bar Harbor may be best-known for its proximity to Acadia National Park. Designated in 1916, Acadia National Park was the first national park east of the Mississippi and despite being one of the smallest, Acadia is consistently ranked as one of the most visited national parks in the country. The park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island, as well as a collection of adjacent isles, and offers much in terms of hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and scenic vistas.

Lobster Roll Portland Maine

Local Flavor

Bar Harbor is all about the seafood. This charming seaside town is bursting with fresh lobster from traditional lobster rolls and delicious lobster bisque to whole steamed lobster dinners and lobster ravioli. You can even find lobster ice cream for dessert. Fresh shrimp, scallops, oysters, crab, haddock, and other fish are also plentiful and the options for sea-to-table dining are nearly endless. If you’re not into seafood, no need to worry; you’ll also find Mexican, Italian, and Asian cuisine around town.

Microbrew fans won’t want to miss a sampling of Atlantic Brewing Company’s lineup of beers. The Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale, an easy-drinking beer brewed with wild Maine blueberries, is their signature beer and can be found in restaurants and bars around town or at their tasting room.  Brewery tours are offered daily during the summer season, but keep in mind that they do fill up fast so make sure to arrive an hour before your tour time to be guaranteed a spot.

For locally made crafts and goods, head to the shops and galleries clustered around the waterfront. Jewelry made from watermelon tourmaline, a unique pink and green gemstone found in Maine, is among the most highly sought-after souvenirs along with blueberry syrups, jams, and even beer considering wild blueberries grow nearly everywhere on Mount Desert Island. Frequent arts and crafts markets are held at the Village Green, a small grassy park in the middle of town, and the Bar Harbor Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sundays during the summer months in the YMCA parking lot.

Cultural Attractions

Although cultural attractions are limited on Mount Desert Island, a handful of museums and galleries in Bar Harbor highlight the natural history and Native American heritage of the region.

The Abbe Museum is the only museum in Maine dedicated solely to the Native American heritage of the state. With locations in both downtown Bar Harbor and Sieur de Monts Spring in Acadia National Park, the Abbe Museum features a vast collection of Native American artifacts spanning thousands of years in history and exhibits dedicated to the history and cultural traditions of the Wabanaki people.

Located on the campus of the College of the Atlantic in the original headquarters of Acadia National Park, the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History features exhibits and displays on the native flora and fauna of Maine. Their tidepool tank is filled with sea stars, hermit crabs, and other marine life you can touch and observe, making this a great option if you’re traveling with children.

Acadia National Park

Top Excursions

Cruise passengers docking at the Bar Harbor cruise port generally head out on a tour of Acadia National Park or a sightseeing cruise in the harbor. Other popular excursions include lighthouse tours, lobster boat adventures, and whale-watching cruises. Here are some of Bar Harbor’s most popular shore excursions:

  • Acadia National Park Tours —  Although a free shuttle bus is offered from Bar Harbor to destinations in Acadia National Park, you’ll see much more of the park with a guided tour. Park tours often hit all of the top sites, including Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond, and the top of Cadillac Mountain, which is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard.
  • Lighthouse Cruises —  Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is the only lighthouse on Mount Desert Island. If you want to see Bear Rock, Egg Rock, or any of the other lighthouses in the area you’ll have to take a boat tour. Several tour options are available; some even include a visit to the outer islands.
  • Lobster Boat Tours —  Take a ride on a traditional lobster boat to learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about life as a lobsterman. You’ll see how lobsters are caught as you watch your captain haul in lobster traps from the ocean floor. You’ll also enjoy scenic views of the harbor, catch glimpses of the luxurious cottages scattered along the shore, and have a chance to see whales, seals, bald eagles, and other seabirds depending on the season.
  • Whale Watching Tours —  The waters around Bar Harbor are rich with marine life, including whales, dolphins, harbor and gray seals, puffins, and other seabirds. Humpback, Finback, and Minke whale sightings are frequent during whale watching season, which runs from mid-June through mid-August, but can be seen anytime between April and October.

Insider’s Tip

At low tide, Bar Island, located directly north of the Town Pier, is accessible by foot across a natural sand and gravel bar. The sandbar is typically open for three hours and once on the island, you can hike to the highest point for a spectacular panoramic view of the town of Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island. Visitors also enjoy exploring the bar’s tide pool area for sea stars, barnacles, and crabs. You’ll want to keep your eye on the tide to avoid getting stranded on the island until the next low tide.

Bar Harbor cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-04-28 18:49

Port Bar Harbor cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bar Harbor, Maine. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Bar Harbor is a port town on Mount Desert Island (Hancock County, Maine USA), with a population of around 5,000. It is a very popular tourist destination in Maine's Down East region.

Since January 2024, Bar Harbor Port (locode USBHB) has limited cruise shipping to 1000 daily disembarking tourists (passengers and crew), which is a substantial reduction from the previous 3000 daily visitors to the cruise port.

It is estimated that cruise tourists contribute USD 20+ million annually to Maine State's economy. Before the cruise shipping industry's pause (since mid-March 2020), the port expected nearly 200 ship calls and 300,000+ passengers. However, the entire 2020 season was eventually canceled. By mid-November 2020, Bar Harbor ME had booked 150+ cruise ship dockings (scheduled port calls) for season 2021.

Regularly scheduled ferries connect to Canada ( Yarmouth Nova Scotia ), with crossing time 3,5 hours.

In 2016, the port handled 105 cruise ship calls and around 169,000 passengers. During season 2016, cruise tourists spent at Bar Harbor around USD 15 million, with total economic impact USD 20,2M (based on a University of Maine study). To these figures must be added passenger fees (USD 0,7M) paid to the city. Also additional is spending by crew and cruise companies themselves. The study team handed out surveys to cruise passengers arriving at Harbor Place or Harborside Dock. Tourists returned 2231 surveys by mail (47% response rate). According to the study, 138,285 passengers disembarked in the cruise port in 2016. This was 87% of vessels' combined passenger capacity (163,000 pax). Note: passenger fees are based on the ship's capacity. The study also showed that in 2016, around 2 million tourists visited Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, of which cruisers were around 10%.

During season 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 171 ship calls (40% increase over 2016) and over 225,000 passengers.

On November 17, 2020, Bar Harbor Town Council discussed the popular policy (for smaller seaports in the USA) to limit the annual number of ships due to the ongoing concerns over the COVID crisis. In November 2022, via voting (1780 vs 1273) was placed a daily limit of 1000 cruise tourists, effective January 2024. A fine of US$100 per person is imposed on the company/operator for every disembarking passenger over the daily limit.

The small town is nationwide famous for its MDI Biological Laboratory (1898-founded independent nonprofit biomedical research facility), The Jackson Laboratory (JAX - large research facility specializing in mammalian genetics, nonprofit with over 2100 employees), College of the Atlantic (COA - private liberal-arts college).

However, Bar Harbor is best known for Acadia National Park/NP, which includes ~1/2 of Mount Desert Island (Cadillac Mountain) plus adjacent smaller isles. The town is served by Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (in Trenton ME), located approx 15 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown Bar Harbor. The county-owned airport serves regularly scheduled domestic flights (carriers Elite Airways, Peninsula Airways, Cape Air, PenAir) connecting to Boston MA, Newark NJ, and Vero Beach FL.

In close proximity to downtown, Acadia NP offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, trekking, biking, mountain climbing, bird watching. Tourists interested in the island's marine life can visit the yacht marina (at the end of Main Street) and sign up for boat tours for wildlife viewing (puffins, whales, seals, lobster, pelagic seabirds) or harbor cruises.

Bar Harbor cruise terminal

Bar Harbor ME is a tender cruise port, which means cruise liners anchor in Frenchman Bay and their passengers are transported to the pier via the ship's tender boats.

After the ship drops anchor, cruise passengers are ferried back and forth to one of the port's 2 piers/docks in downtown (at 121 Eden Street). From there, they can connect (with trolleys and buses) to local attractions, including Acadia National Park.

(NEW) Bar Harbor cruise terminal "Marine Atlantic"

As tendering passengers increase cruise companies' costs, there is a plan for the conversion of the old ferry terminal (on Eden Street) to a combined ferry -cruise terminal facility.

The town voted on June 13, 2017 (Article 12) to re-zone the old ferry terminal. Following the vote (945 to 658), the town purchased the state-owned Marine Atlantic property (former ferry terminal) from the Maine Department of Transportation. This facility served two Bay Ferries ships (The Cat, The Bluenose) connecting Bar Harbor with Nova Scotia Canada ( Yarmouth ).

  • In February 2019 was signed a 5-year lease deal (thru 2024) with annual rent CAD 264,000.
  • By the lease agreement, Bay Ferries started a major terminal renovation project that includes demolition and rebuilding of Customs Plaza, as well as a renovation of outbuildings and portions of the terminal building's interior.
  • Customs Plaza's renovation also includes installing new equipment (required by US Customs and Border Protection), repairs to the existing docking pier, installing a new fixed bridge section (adjacent to the pier), transfer of the floating ferry ramp from Portland to Bar Harbor.
  • Nova Scotia contributed to the cost of the ferry terminal's border services. Since the Maine-Nova Scotia ferry service was resumed (2015-2018), the NS government spent CAD 32 million in subsidies.

Article 12's zoning change allows cruise (and other) vessels to dock at the ferry terminal. Several lawsuits (filed by locals) were against this port development project. As of 2019, Ferry Terminal Visioning Committee has approved the state-owned property to be used as a multi-use terminal. The current deal includes a 5-year lease for the CAT ferry providing daily connections Bar Harbor-Yarmouth. Other terminal uses could include a possible yacht marina, boat storage, overflow parking (for tourists), cruise ship tendering.

The town has a webpage dedicated to materials developed by consultants and the local committee process. More information can be found at barharbormaine.gov/393/Ferry-Terminal. Anyone interested in this issue could follow port developments on the website.

In early-July 2020, due to the progressing in the USA COVID pandemic, Bar Harbor decided to close its seaports to cruise ships for the remainder of 2020. On July 7, town councilors voted to ban cruise ships after ACL-American Cruise Lines announced its plan to resume coastal voyages with some itineraries visiting several Maine coast towns.

In early-August 2021, the Town Council voted unanimously for the 65-year-old ferry terminal to be demolished, once there's money and a plan to replace it with a new facility. Most of the existing infrastructure (including the pier) will be demolished, to fulfill the contract with Bay Ferries. The decision was made following a workshop with the Harbor Committee in July, during which was also suggested building a new Marina (yacht-serving port facility).

  • In late-July, the Canadian company announced plans to restart its fast-catamaran service (THE CAT ship) linking with Canada (Yarmouth) .
  • The 1956-built old ferry terminal was originally designed to serve the Canadian ferryboat MV Bluenose (1977-built/1982-scrapped), so the current layout is obsolete.
  • The current terminal consists of 2 causeways, 2 piers/docks (north and south), 2 vehicle bridges (between both piers), and a dilapidated building.

cruise bar harbor maine

Added to Favourites!

  • 4 hrs Estimate Duration

Follow a circuitous road through Mount Desert Island and stop along the way at breathtaking spots that inspired some of America’s most gifted 19th-century landscape painters. The road winds through stunningly beautiful Acadia National Park, which adherents of the Hudson River School art movement painted in a style that Romanticism heavily influenced. Acclaimed artists such as Thomas Cole, Thomas Moran and Frederic Edwin Church were all captivated by the natural wonders, which look much the same today as they did in their time. You will pause at Sieur de Monts Spring, the overlook at dramatic Schooner Head and at serene Jordan Pond, a sheltered glassy lake that ancient glaciers carved out of the landscape. You will also drop by precipitous Otter Cliff and Otter Cove, which offers sweeping views of the sea and inland. At each stop, the guide will provide entertaining anecdotes about the artists that captured these majestic landscapes on canvas.

• Drive along the spectacularly scenic Park Loop Road that winds through Acadia National Park. • Pause at naturally beautiful spots that inspired some of America’s greatest landscape painters. • Stop at coastal viewpoints, an inland lake and precipitous seaside cliffs. • Hear enlightening commentary about the artists that painted Mount Desert Island.

New England and Canada Cruises: What To Expect On Your Sailing

S ailing through the serene waters on New England and Canada cruises aboard Holland America’s Zaandam was like living a decade-long dream. The spellbinding landscapes, historical touchstones, and every seafood connoisseur’s delight across eight memorable days truly symbolized the essence of cruising for my friend Angie and me.

Revel in our tale where modern comforts aboard our magnificent vessel met the allure of discovery at each port.

Here’s what our itinerary looked like:

  • Day 1: Embark in Montreal, Quebec
  • Day 2: Quebec City, Quebec (9 hours in port)
  • At Sea Day 3
  • Day 4: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island  (9 hours in port and tender required)
  • Day 5: Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (8 hours in port)
  • Day 6: Halifax, Nova Scotia (8 hours in port)
  • Day 7: Bar Harbor, Maine (10 hours in port and tender required)

Note : A tender is when the cruise ship has to dock away from the pier (primarily due to shallow water), and smaller boats (lifeboats) take passengers to the shore from the cruise ship.

Thanks to Holland America for hosting on this awesome itinerary. As always, opinions and reviews are 100% mine and unbiased.

A Magnificent Embarkation in Montreal

The vacation was simple: leave our suitcases at the door of  Le Centre Sheraton Montreal Hotel , a hotel offered by Holland America at a discounted rate, and they’d magically find their way onto the Holland America Zaandam ship.

Our first stop was  Aloha Espresso Bar  for our caffeine fix, and later, we went to  Crêperie Chez Suzette  for a mushroom/asparagus crepe so tasty that I nearly teared up. Seriously, this may have been the best crepe I ever ate. Montreal has cool shops with fun trinkets, clothing, accessories, and Canadian merchandise, so consider buying souvenirs here.

Our eyes feasted on Montreal’s grandeur, from Rue de la Commune’s majesty to Basilique Notre-Dame’s grace. However, time fenced us from  Château Ramezay ‘s historic whispers; the reenactors against a backdrop of 18th-century gardens painted enough of a picture for our imaginations.

Navigating Montreal’s roads and streets required patience. Take heed, fellow travelers, for phone GPS glitches can ply your path with unintended adventures, mainly if French is as foreign to you as it was to me. When in doubt, tradition triumphs; hailing a tried-and-true taxi cab was our golden ticket back to the hotel from Old Port.

Sashing Through Romantic Quebec City

Quebec City unveiled itself through “Stroll Through Quebec City & Tea at Chateau Frontenac,” a tour worth its weight in gold at $79.95 (these are old prices; be sure to verify current ones before booking). Our tour lasted three hours.

The cobblestone narrative unfurled tales of New France’s roots, while the fun (no pun intended) Old Quebec City Funicular spirited us between Lower and Upper Towns (Haute-Ville to the Basse-Ville) in a whimsical style. In Lower Town, we visited Place Royale and le Quartier Petit-Champlain , the first shopping street in North America.

Tea at  Chateau Frontenac  was an indulgence we wished lasted an eternity, with sweet treats beckoning for more time in Quebec City’s charming arms. A tip for fellow explorers: carve out time before your tour for that extra shopping.

Quebec City is gorgeous. I would love to come back here on a land trip.

Relaxing At-Sea Day

Our single day at sea allowed Angie and me some onboard fun and relaxation in spades. Sleeping in, playing trivia, and an occasional outing to the casino balanced perfectly with rejuvenating spells in the Thermal Suite, featuring the hypnotic hydrotherapy pool and aromatic saunas.

The highlight of the Thermal Suite is the heated mosaic lounges where you can relax and watch the ship navigate through the ocean waves.

Then came Afternoon Tea, a traditional delight on Holland America that transformed scones into experience and my favorite thing to do on the cruise ship. Sea days usually offer more sweets and finger sandwiches than in-port days, so try both.

Our at-sea day transcended beyond the vessel’s offerings. It was an opportunity to steep ourselves in calm through reading, the gentle buzz of the onboard shops, and chatting with fellow cruise passengers’ friendships.

Cruising with Holland America isn’t just about the destinations; it’s also about weaving a tapestry of moments – tranquil, exciting, and unforgettable. Whether you’re shore-bound or basking in the onboard ambiance, each day is an adventure waiting to unfurl.

An Adventurous Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Day

We embarked on the “Island Drive & Anne of Green Gables” excursion on our voyage with Holland America. The price was $79.95 for a 3.5-hour tour. Stops included the picturesque Cavendish Beach and Confederation Bridge before reaching the cherished  Anne of Green Gables Museum .

Surrounded by the buzz of fellow literary enthusiasts, we experienced a vibrant taste of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel come to life. It was a special visit for me as this has been my mother’s favorite story since she was young.

Though our museum visit was quick, akin to being herded swiftly through an enchanting literary world, it was offset by a tasty box lunch included in the farewell. A stop at the French River followed, boasting pristine white beaches contrasting the lush farmland—a frame-worthy scene deserving of any traveler’s camera roll.

A Stroll Through Old Sydney Town

Our third Holland America excursion, “Walk Through Old Sydney Town,” led us on a historical promenade for just $39.95. Over two hours, we breathed in the legacy of Cape Breton at St. Patrick’s, Cape Breton’s oldest Roman Catholic Church, and absorbed the echoes of history at Jost House.

While the sights whispered tales of yesteryear settlers, this leg didn’t stir my soul, and it’s not often I don’t love every cruise port. Nevertheless, our cruise companions spurred envy with tales of their Fortress of  Louisbourg National Historic Site  adventure.

Earlier that morning, Angie and I took our own tour through the shopping part of town and saw some fun murals and stores. We had a killer cinnamon roll from  Selkie’s Neighbourhood Diner  and Italian soda at  Doktor Luke’s , then quickly dashed into The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse to taste the local cuisine.

If you aren’t dying to do one of the excursions offered, get off the ship and walk through town. It is the best (and free) option. I love that our New England cruise included so many Canadian ports.

Halifax Highlights

Our Halifax exploration offered back-to-back adventures. The all-day hop-on/hop-off bus tour ($59.95) unfolded the city’s character in 90 minutes per loop. Angie and I soaked in the verdant allure of the Halifax Public Gardens , an ode to horticultural artistry and beautifully manicured grounds. Amid historic sites and maritime lore, the bus tour guide was our knowledgeable beacon.

Ventures off the bus at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax Citadel, and Public Gardens were open to all explorers, not just those from our cruise. The proximity of the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market to our dock presented a treasure trove of gourmet bites and local trinkets, a brief stroll revealing the heart of maritime commerce.

Tip for travel companions with mobility considerations:  Halifax unrolls a carpet of joy for every visitor.

Peggy’s Cove & Titanic Memories

My emotions regarding the “Peggy’s Cove & Titanic Combo” tour waver. Costing $64.95 for 3.5 hours of clock-watching hurry, it did spare us the ordeal of self-planning. The pilgrimage began at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, a solemn tribute to the lives claimed by the RMS Titanic tragedy. One hundred twenty-one of them are buried here.

Hindered by a current sinkhole near the cemetery, we navigated challenging rolling hills to pay from where the bus parked our swift respects to history’s lost souls. All in all, we only had five minutes at the actual gravesites.

At  Peggy’s Cove , rustic fishermen’s dwellings and granite shores on the Eastern coast of St. Margarets Bay welcomed us. Though the mist played coy with our cameras, Peggy’s Cove’s allure remained steadfast. And though you can only photograph it, not go inside, it is the most photographed setting in Eastern Canada.

Be sure to pick up some souvenirs at the gift shop, browse the local artists’ booths around the village, and grab a bite of sweets from the local eateries.

Tip : Take caution, as rogue waves are known to hit at any time, and the rocks can be incredibly slippery.

Beautiful Bar Harbor, Maine

As a seasoned cruiser, I’ve experienced an array of voyages, but our finale at Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard Holland America’s Canada and New England cruise, became an unexpected highlight. Delving into Bar Harbor was like unwrapping an unassuming gift only to find a priceless treasure inside – why did I wait so long to explore this corner of Maine?

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the pier, Bar Harbor exudes enchantment with its quaint storefronts set amidst a landscape dotted with vibrant floral displays and picturesque spots, which quietly beckon to pause and capture a moment. Local boutiques and restaurants add to the allure.

Indulge in the local delight of blueberry ice cream, churned to perfection and offered in several spots around town. It’s a regional treat not to be missed, crafted from berries as fresh as the ocean breeze.

Adventure beckons right at your doorstep in Bar Harbor – no need for curated tours. My friend Angie and I chose to weave our own path through the area’s fabric. With an Enterprise car rental secured (conveniently picked up with their courtesy shuttle service), we set out to engrave our visit in the pages of our National Parks Passport with a self-guided trip through the majestic  Acadia National Park .

Our exploration led us through the serene beauty of Frenchman Bay, unveiling sights of eagles and cormorants taking flight. We ascended the paths of Acadia, making frequent stops to take hundreds of pictures.

At Cadillac Mountain, the world unfolded in a breathtaking 360° spectacle of nature’s splendor, while Jordan Pond offered a blend of delectable dining and tranquil trails.

Our drive unveiled Bar Harbor’s opulent Victorian mansions and introduced us to Ellsworth, a charming artery leading to Acadia’s heart. Here, amid the stunning scenery, we savored what could only be described as lobster roll nirvana at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound .

Cruise New England: A Bucket List Completed

Reflecting on my Canada and New England cruising experience, I’m grateful to Holland America for making it effortless to immerse in the diverse offerings – from selecting daily delights to choosing intriguing shore excursions.

This voyage wasn’t just a means to satisfy a travel itch; it was the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration—a hearty thanks to Holland America for creating such an educational and lesser-known itinerary.

  • 7 Breathtaking Towns to Visit in Maine

Otherwise known as vacationland, Maine attracts an enormous number of visitors in the summertime as New Englanders pack up their vehicles to escape the hustle of the city and road trip to this vast and rugged state. Maine is the largest state in New England and is the least populated state east of the Mississippi River . There’s endless serene beauty with 3500 miles of coastline dotted with adorable seaside towns and historic lighthouses people from afar come to photograph and see. While cruising US Route 1 along the Atlantic Coast , lobster shacks are a common sight, as friendly locals wait to fix you a plate. After all, the state produces 90 percent of the nation’s lobster. Inland, the Maine Highlands stretch across the sky and provide endless adventure such as fishing, hiking, and skiing in the winter. Discover 7 breathtaking towns in New England’s far northern state and consider stopping by on your next vacation!

Aerial view of Bar Harbor, Maine.

With jagged ocean cliffs and rocky beaches, the seaside town of Bar Harbor sits on the northern side of the state. The quaint town has a small population of about 5,200 people. You could say life slows down here. Colorful wooden boutiques, restaurants, and galleries line the downtown area, which rests on a small sloped hill and has gorgeous views of the harbor. Lobstering is one of the main industries here, and on any given day visitors can watch boats return from sea. With that said, there are numerous spots to have a lobster feast served with plenty of dipping butter and a side of corn on the cob. A sign you found a good place to stop is the sight of large boiling pots of lobster out front.

Tourism also fuels the economy here, as first-time visitors often return to relax and bask in the natural beauty. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of the most visited national parks in the country. Referred to as a place where the mountains meet the sea, there are amazing scenic drives to take in the park and great hiking to try, too. You can trek up to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard. It offers magnificent views of the island landscape and is the first place in the country you can see the sunrise in the morning.

Rockport, Maine in a well-protected harbor just west of North Haven Island on Penobscot Bay.

Although Rockport is a small community, the mid-coast town is awfully mighty and full of life. With a population of 3640 people, Rockport is considered an art mecca, and creative professionals from around the world live here. In fact, the town owns and operates the Rockport Opera Center, which holds concerts and plays throughout the year. Further, the Center for Main Contemporary Art is only 7 miles away in Rockland and is considered one of the best art galleries in the country. And Maine Media College is located in town, attracting inspired photographers and filmmakers. With all that said, you can see why creatives are drawn here.

A popular spot for tourists is Rockport Marine Park, where you can see the Andre the Seal statue. You can learn about how the beloved seal pup was abandoned and found by a Rockport resident, and how his story is the inspiration behind two books and a film. Not too far away is the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, which rests on the end of a long breakwater. There’s a keeper’s house visitors can explore, or they can climb to the top of the lantern to watch historic schooners go by. In town, there’s an impressive selection of historic buildings with great shops and restaurants. And if you feel like a bit of farm life, you can tour Aldermere Farm, where there’s a collection of Belted Gollawy cattle, also known as “Oreo cows.”

Kittery is considered the oldest town in Maine and is located on the southernmost tip of the state, resting right on the border of New Hampshire . Some of the earliest houses in the state can be found in seaside neighborhoods such as Kittery Point. A little over 10,000 people call this delightful place home and the picturesque historic town has transformed into a hipster paradise. That is easy to see with the trendy boutiques to shop at and chef-driven restaurants to indulge in, such as Warren’s Lobster House. And just a little way outside of town, there are unforgettable scenic vistas, lighthouses, and historic forts. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the Navy’s oldest continuously running shipyard, and visitors can take tours in the afternoons. Another great stop is Fort McClary State Historic Site, which sits next to the pristine Piscataqua River . Visitors can learn about how the fort was active during five wars, including the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 . And for those with a fascination for lighthouses, Whaleback Lighthouse is 5 miles away. It's a gorgeous sight, providing boaters direction at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.

Aerial view of Greenville, Maine.

The inland towns of Maine offer just as much serenity as the seaside communities but are often left out. One place you don't want to miss is Greenville, which is located in the heart of the Maine Highlands. The area is a great escape from the city and attracts outdoor enthusiasts with its endless dense forests, tall mountains, and clear streams and rivers. It has a small living population just shy of 1430 people. The community borders Moosehead Lake, the largest coldwater lake in Maine, stretching 40 miles long and 20 miles wide. There's excellent brook trout and salmon fishing, and tourists can cruise around the lake at sunset on the Katahdin, the last remaining steamboat in Maine. Venturing away from the lake, tourists can hike to the top of Mount Kineo and scavenge for a light-colored volcanic rock called rhyolite. The area has the world’s largest masses of it here. And while adventuring in the backwoods, you might just spot a Moose . In the springtime, the sightings can be in the hundreds. For a real treat, tourists can hop on a moose safari to learn about them and view the wildlife.

It should be mentioned that the town is not just reserved for summer travel. For those who dare to venture here in the winter, you can enjoy the annual dog sled race, a one-of-a-kind experience. And in town on a cold day, one can explore the Moosehead Maritime Museum, which gives a nice storyline of the area.

Cape Elizabeth

Aerial view of Two Lights Lighthouse on the oceanfront in Cape Elizabeth

Cape Elizabeth is a charming seaside town where one feels like everyone is family. The friendly town has gorgeous historic homes and a sprawling open green landscape that hugs the shore of Casco Bay. Located on the southern coast of Maine, the town has a population of 9,530 people and is only about 10 miles outside of Portland, which is the largest city in the state. With that said, Cape Elizabeth is home to the Portland Head Light, which is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. People can take tours or walk to the top of the lookout, and there’s a museum visitors can explore that is open during the day. The lighthouse is in Fort Williams Park, which spans 90 acres of rolling green lawn and recreational space. Given the open land in Cape Elizabeth, the quaint small town is often best explored by bicycle. And if you feel like city life for a day, you can hop in your vehicle and head to Portland where there are great shops and restaurants. A good place to stop is the Portland Observatory, a historic maritime signal tower that offers great views. It was built in 1807 to serve as a communication station for Portland Harbor.

Swan's Island

A walkway in Swan's Island, Maine

Swan’s Island is a darling little community that’s surrounded by picturesque countryside with a tiny population of 417 people, Despite its small size, the town draws thousands of tourists a year because of the surrounding attractions. It’s home to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, which is referred to as the crown jewel of coastal Maine. The bridge towers higher than the Statue of Liberty and is the tallest bridge observatory in the world. When you get to the top, there are amazing views of the Penobscot River and distant mountains to the west. The bridge is conveniently located next to the historic Fort Knox, one of the best-preserved military forts on the New England coast. Visitors can learn how it was constructed in the 1800s to protect the Penobscot River Valley from possible British naval attack.

For lighthouse enthusiasts, the historic Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse is a unique place to visit during a day trip. It is located at the entrance of Burnt Coat Harbor and is a beacon for lobster boaters finding their way home. For a real treat, you can climb to the top of the tower and watch boats return from a day at sea. And if you feel like being active, there are hiking trails near the lighthouse, such as Long Point Beach Trail and Burying Point Trail. And after a long day of exploring the Harbor Watch Inn is a great place to kick up your feet and take in the hospitality. Keep in mind that the town is a “dry community,” so if you want to have a glass of wine during sunset, be sure to bring your own bottle. For essentials though, there’s a market center where you can get groceries and supplies.

Overlooking York, Maine.

Located on the Gulf of Maine , York is a darling resort town with a gilded-age vibe that tourists flock to. It is made up of four communities: York Village, York Harbor, York Beach, and Cape Neddick, and has a population of about 14,000 people. It used to be part of a seaside ski town and transformed into a sought-after summer destination for its beaches and outdoor recreation. The Nubble Lighthouse in Cape Neddick is a highly photographed landmark and features a keeper’s house with gingerbread trim. However, the lighthouse is on an island, so visitors are limited to viewing it from the mainland. With that in mind, Sohier Park is a popular spot you can see it from while having a nice picnic by the water too.

There’s also quite a bit of outdoor adventure here. You can hike up Mount Agamenticus, which offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the White Mountains, and you can even see Boston’s skyline in the far distance. Also, the York River runs right through town and is a great place to go boating, canoeing, and kayaking. It flows out to the Atlantic at York Harbor and is partially tidal, meaning the water level rises and falls with the ocean. Visitors can cross the Wiggley Bridge, one of the smallest suspension bridges in the world.

Maine is a gorgeous state that will leave you feeling refreshed and recharged. From the gorgeous rocky coast to the Main Highlands inland, the scenery is spectacular here. And there’s no shortage of history. Whether you’re visiting a museum or taking in the historic buildings and homes, the small towns of Maine will steal your heart. Sites of the lobster industry are everywhere, and seafood restaurants gladly open their doors to visitors. On any given day, you can watch the lobster boats return to the harbor or hike to the nearby historic lighthouse. The towns of Maine have something for everyone. And they might just leave you wanting to stay a bit longer.

Luxurious American cruise line provides a comfortable way to learn about U.S. history | Sandy Fenton

American Cruise Lines

You might not be familiar with the name, but American Cruise Lines has been taking guests to the country's most popular rivers and coastal waters for over 50 years. American Cruise LInes

  • Sandy Fenton | Special to PennLive

You don’t need to travel overseas to enjoy a river cruise vacation.

You might not be familiar with the name, but American Cruise Lines has been taking guests to America’s most popular rivers and coastal waters for over 50 years.

My husband and I recently returned home from a weeklong “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing aboard the new, upscale and modern “American Eagle,” a 100-passenger coastal catamaran ship that departs from Amelia Island (Fernandina), Fla., and ends in Charleston, S.C.

Our itinerary also included port-of-calls in Brunswick, Ga., Savannah, Ga. (overnight), and Hilton Head and Beaufort, S.C., (overnight) as we cruised the Intracoastal Waterway taking in all the amazing Lowcountry scenery along the way.

Having loved our many European river cruises, I didn’t know what to expect cruising throughout the United States. Well, we’re sold. “American Eagle” exceeded our expectations.

American Cruise Lines is positioning itself as the number one choice for domestic and foreign adult travelers wanting a premium experience while learning more about American history and culture from a river, harbor and coastal water perspective.

American Cruise Lines is the only 100% all-American-owned and operated cruise company in the U.S. All ships are built in Salisbury, Md., and crewed by Americans. The company sails both rivers and coastal itineraries around the country, only visiting U.S. ports. Their guests (Eagle Society Members) keep coming back over and over again (75-80% were past passengers on our itinerary).

American Cruise Lines is all about small ships and all-inclusive cruising (90-180 passengers). They have 17 ships, with American “Liberty” and American “Legend” debuting this year, plus two more coming in 2025. In addition, ACL just purchased four paddle-boat ships from the recently defunct American Queen Voyages.

Popular itineraries and ports of call in 35 states spotlight the Columbia and Snake rivers, the entire East Coast from Maine to Florida, Alaska, the Mississippi River and its tributaries, New England islands and harbors, the Pacific Northwest and the Chesapeake Bay - with onboard resident historians and experts hosting port discussions and briefings on all sailings.

On our “American Eagle” sailing most guests were 60+, retired, well-traveled, active and eager to discover new ports and explore the historic river towns along the way. These “Eagle Society” members have already “done that, been there” when it comes to travel, especially cruising. Many have circumnavigated the world by land, river and sea.

Nowadays, they still have the time, money and energy/good health to travel, but prefer to stay in the United States, closer to home, and do not need (or want) over-the-top, opulent surroundings with personal butlers and sommeliers, nor do they want mega-size vessels holding 6,000+ guests. “Eagle Society” cruisers want good food & drinks, good service, and comfortable and modern accommodations combined with a relaxed, uncomplicated, friendly onboard experience.

The most popular event is the late afternoon open bar “Signature Cocktail Hour” with officers and fellow guests enjoying their favorite beverages and hors d’oeuvres featuring local specialties, and chatting about their day’s adventures (with live background music) before heading into the open seating dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Fresh food is brought aboard daily, and all meals & snacks are included in your cruise. Master chefs prepare traditional American menus with a regional flair featuring local ingredients. The menus are short and sweet without any confusion when ordering. Breakfast in the dining room offers the most menu choices including a feature of the day.

In Brunswick, Georgia, the feature was beef tenderloin with eggs, lobster scampi & breakfast potatoes (I know, I know), plus made-to-order omelets, French toast, oatmeal, specialty quiches and the usual sides – bacon, sausage, grits. (A casual breakfast/lunch is offered every day in the outdoor café).

Our lunch choices included fried green tomato BLT, Napoleon lemon dill crab salad, or Brunswick stew. Dinner has two appetizers (corn chowder soup or iceberg wedge salad) and 3 entrees: Southern BBQ pork chop, crab-crusted salmon or pan-seared sea bass. Wine and beer and soft drinks are complimentary during lunch and dinner, and homemade desserts are a big deal with this crowd.

Following dinner, many guests head back to the main lounge for live entertainment, featuring local musical guests, comedians, magicians and storytellers – and yes, the open bar is available to all.

To be clear, American Cruise Lines is not for everyone. It is not for families with young children. It is not for honeymooners wanting a tropical island beach vacation during the day and a heart-pounding late-night disco dance party. There is no onboard pool, casino, shopping, fancy spa, Broadway shows, 24/7 room service, activities or entertainment. It is the total opposite of Disney or Vegas or Carnival Cruises.

It is also not an inexpensive cruise line. ACL is a small, intimate experience for adults wanting to see and explore the United States in an upscale and comfortable environment – without long lines and crowds. (Some New England and Columbia & Snake River summer itineraries are popular with multi-generational groups – without young children.)

Here are a few of my favorite ACL “American Eagle” experiences during our “Historic South & Golden Isles” sailing :

  • Easy and seamless walking on and off the ship at every port of call. In Savannah we were docked in front of the River Walk, smack in the heart of this historic and beautiful city.
  • The new, modern and luxurious onboard décor. Very light and airy throughout the ship. Spacious public areas and staterooms/suites, including a surprisingly large sun deck with comfy lounge chairs and a track for scenic walking.
  • Shore excursions, especially the “Alligator Wildlife Exploration” in the Sea Pines Resort Forest in Hilton Head and the “Pat Conroy’s Writing Exploration” and “Beaufort Movie Walking Tour” (”The Big Chill,” “Prince of Tides,” “Forest Gump,” “The Great Santini”) in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina.
  • Eating breakfast or lunch outdoors on the Sky Lounge verandah overlooking the back of the ship and all the Lowcountry scenery on both sides.
  • All-inclusive cruising – no nickel and diming. Fares include all onboard farm-to-table meals and snacks, wifi, evening cocktails, entertainment, enrichment programs, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, tips and gratuities, and so much more.

Before you book an American Cruise Line vacation, be sure to ask your travel advisor what style of ship you will be on. There are distinct differences (interior & exterior) between the riverboats, paddle-wheelers and coastal cruise ships. Many of the itineraries include a pre-cruise hotel stay with transfers and some extend complimentary airfare and special promotions.
