In Europe, you can consider river boats and trains in addition to cruising the coast on a big (or small) cruise ship. I have not done a bus tour but my DD did a Globus trip through England and Wales and absolutely loved it. The trips on busses that I have done in Europe (usually in connection to a cruise or pre-cruise) have given me great respect for the bus drivers. They can take those huge busses into places I would not take my little car. A bus tour does not allow for the unpacking once but they do take a good care of your luggage so you don't have to schlep it.

You will love Europe. So many things to see and if you put a big smile on your face people will give it back. Also more people speak multiple languages in Europe than here in America. Lucky for one language me.

letsgo39

We have done both rivercruises and bus tours. It just depends on where you want to go. You can't go everywhere on a rivercruise and one of our favorite bus tours was to Italy with Globus. We went to Rome early and had 5 days in Rome,3 days in Venice and 3 days in Florence.I have also taken other bus tours with Globus for several weeks spending one or 2 days in each city and have seen much of Europe this way.The 1 day in each city tours are very tiring and although it is a great way to see a lot in a short time I just don't think that is enough time in each city. The packing and unpacking every day is a pain. What it does is give you an idea for places you want to return to on your own and we have done that too.I learned from my first bus tour to make sure in following bus tours to have at least 2 days in each city.Bus tours tend to cater to younger guests than river cruises do and often if you are traveling in the summer you will have families on the tour with you which is fun for us.

Three years ago we took our first river cruise traveling from Budapest to Amsterdam and we loved it.It was great to unpack and pack again just 1 time. I love taking my hotel with me.We have another river cruise planned in April in France. If rivercruises went everywhere I would prefer that but they don't and I want to see it ALL!!:D The river cruises are much more relaxing and slower paced than bus tours. All that said our next trip after this river cruise in April to France will probably be a self drive car tour to Ireland.I've already starting thinking about it.Not surprising as I usually start planning my next trip to Europe well in advance. I guess I am a dreamer and Europe is very addicting.

I hope I have been of some help.I know you will have a wonderful time no matter how you travel. Many of us thought our first Europe trip was THE trip of a lifetime. Now we can't stay home!!;)

Boy is this a great subjective question. There will be many, many people who love to tour and then there will be some like me who tried it and found it terrible. My wife and I did a tour of Greece in 2008 and I found the endless hours sitting down watching the traffic and scenery go by to be at first interesting and then very boring. It's true about every 2 hours you get a rest stop but you can't get up and wander around the bus to stretch your legs or to talk with anyone other than your partner or a person opposite you. When you do stop for a break to eat or toilet run you are inevitably at a "tourist trap" that charges like a wounded bull for everything but you're trapped. On our tour we spent at a minimum 5-6 hours driving every day (some days more) which only leaves short periods to see the sites and little or no free time in the towns you stop at overnight. I found I had a short attention span backside that rebelled on me. The positive is that if we had never taken a bus tour we would have never found out we didn't like them.

I hope you get some responses from those who like to tour to balance out my negativity.

This is exactly why you need to do your homework when planning a trip. It is not hard to figure the places you are going to and how far apart they are to know about how much time you will spend on the bus. This is why I say to make sure if you do a bus tour that you spend a minimum of 2 nights in each city. Globus does a great job on bus tours and it is up to the consumer to make a wise purchase. It really is a great way to see all of Europe.

Well I have to say it was our first bus tour and no amount of forward planning with either your company Globus or with Insight could have prepared us for what we found we didn't like. It wouldn't have mattered if we'd had an extra day in a particular city the long and boring travel to get there would have been the same (to us anyway).

My first trip will be a river cruise therefore I may be spoiled for life. I have read a lot of posts on the Trafalgar message board, but, alot of people on that site have not been on a river cruise. For those that have, they love them but seem to still love buses. I do want to see Italy next...maybe, therefore I wonder if a train is better, assuming that is an option. It's amazing how many imaginary trips I have already gone on via the web and travel books trying to decide on future travel possibilities. I haven't even gone yet and I am addicted. :)

Cuizer2

I will take my first trip to Europe in 2010. Do cruisers also like to take bus tours? I don't mean a side bus tour connected to a cruise but a full bus tour. Each probably has their own pros and cons

I have no interest in a bus tour. If I want to see more of a place I'll fly there.

We did 2 Insight tours in 2005 with a break on the Greek Islands in between. 12 days of Bavaria, Austria & Switzerland - just spectacular scenery. The second one (14 days) covered the length and breadth of Italy - totally different from the first one but also fantastic. HOWEVER, they were both quite tiring. If you are not a morning person, be warned that most mornings, bags had to be outside your door at 6.00 a.m with a departure at 7.00a.m. We tried desperately hard not to nod off on the bus so we wouldn't miss anything

As a previous poster said, it is a great way to sample different places to possibly re-visit for a longer period at some future point.

I wouldn't say 'No' to another bus tour but I think my DH will need some convincing

I would take another bus tour if it was 2 days at least in each location. Unlike one of the previous posters I am NEVER bored in Europe even on long bus trips. I am just so thrilled to be seeing Europe that I am in awe of everything I am seeing and don't want to miss anything. I know full well how lucky I am.

We have done a couple of land tours with Trafalgar. We lived out of our suitcase, saw a lot, spent a lot of time on the bus.

Our last land tour was with Grand Circle and we spent almost a week in each area in a hotel and "bussed it" to different cities each day. This was a very nice way to see a lot, be able to get settled in and feel like you were not always on the bus. Staying in Sorrento for a week was wonderful.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018

  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Whether you're embarking on your first cruise alone or you've been on solo cruises before, single travelers will find more options than ever when it comes to cruising solo. Many cruise lines offer single staterooms with the same amenities as other cabins, at a price similar to what you'd pay with double occupancy fares. You'll also find special promotions where the single supplement fee is reduced or waived, making it more affordable to reserve a spacious stateroom or luxurious suite with even more amenities – including personalized butler service, an added perk of booking with many luxury lines .

If you're ready for a maritime adventure, an extended vacation or simply a quick getaway from home, these top cruise lines offer some of the best options for solo travelers on waterways around the world.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. If you're sailing in the Caribbean, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with other passengers at the line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Once on board the vessel, check out the daily program for activities conducive to meeting others – like wine tastings, cocktail-making classes and more.
