Brilliance of the Seas

Introduced in 2002, Brilliance of the Seas houses 2,543 passengers and 848 staff members. The ship's last major refurbishment was in 2013, but it received some Oasis-class updates in April 2018 (plus new furniture and fresh carpeting). The ship is big enough to offer an array of activities, yet small enough to pass through canals and offer more unique itineraries than larger ships in the fleet.

Brilliance of the Seas offers eight restaurants, including five specialty options. The ship also provides entertainment for the whole family, including poolside movies, a three-story theater, a rock climbing wall and a mini-golf course. While adults grab a cocktail at one of the bars, kids and teens can enjoy age-appropriate youth clubs.

As far as lodging goes, about 75% of the ship's cabins offer ocean views (and about half of those come with balconies). The most budget-friendly cabins are Interior staterooms (170 square feet). All include amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges.

Brilliance of the Seas departs from ports throughout North America and Australia for a variety of sailings around the world.

Norwegian Getaway

Introduced in 2014, the 3,963-passenger, 1,646-crew member Norwegian Getaway was recently renovated in 2020 to add a full-service Starbucks, a new live music venue and more. The ship further distinguishes itself from competitors with its quarter-mile-long "Waterfront" area that's lined with shops, bars and restaurants.

Getaway appeals to younger crowds thanks to a multistory water park and age-specific kids and teens clubs. Still, it appeals to couples as well with its romantic gourmet dining venues, such as the Ocean Blue specialty restaurant.

When it comes to lodging, solo travelers can take advantage of Studio cabins, while groups can opt for Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Club Balcony Suite category cabins. If you’re looking for even more luxury, splurge on a cabin in The Haven, which offers access to a private sun deck and 24-hour butler service.

Getaway departs from Miami ,  New York City ,  Rome  and more for sailings in the Dominican Republic, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Europe. Norwegian Getaway completes transatlantic voyages as well.

Cruisers will have a blast on the ship's 214-foot-long waterslide, and children will love Seuss at Sea.

Carnival Liberty

Originally launched in 2005, Carnival Liberty carries 2,974 guests and 1,160 staff members. It received a minor refresh of its public spaces in 2021, along with other routine maintenance. This guest-to-crew ratio means the ship can provide a higher level of personalization than its megaship competitors. Liberty is equipped with all of the "Fun Ship 2.0" amenities, including popular dining venues like Guy's Burger Joint. Cruisers can also dine at several other restaurants and bars, including two main dining rooms, the Lido Buffet and a steakhouse.

When it comes to entertainment, the ship includes the Punchliner Comedy Club, the SkyBox Sports Bar and live stage shows. Children ages 2 to 17 can play at age-appropriate youth clubs while parents relax at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

As far as lodging is concerned, Carnival Liberty offers a variety of stateroom categories, all of which come with flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service. Key global events in that program were also "The French Open" (Roland Garros) in Paris France, "New Year’s Eve in Dubai", "Carnival in Brazil" (Rio de Janeiro), "Pingxi Lantern Festival" (Taipei City Taiwan). Each of these signature itineraries offered as optional unique shore excursions and themed onboard events and shows.

New Orleans cruise terminal

Port NOLA (New Orleans cruise port) is approx 5,5-hour drive from Houston TX, 2-hour drive from Baton Rouge LA and 3-hour drive from Jackson MS. New Orleans Airport is approx 16 mi (26 km) from the cruise terminal.

Port NOLA has two terminals serving cruise ships (liners and riverboats) - Julia Street Cruise Terminal, and Erato Cruise Terminal, with combined wharf length (2 berths) 792 m (2600 ft).

Julia Street Cruise Terminal

Port's first cruise terminal building was opened in 1991. The facilities include baggage area, refreshment stands, check-in desks, elevated loading ramp for passengers, ATMs, souvenir kiosks. Terminal's parking (Whale Parking) is off Convention Center Blvd.

Julia Street Terminal serves the companies NCL-Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean .

Erato Cruise Terminal

Port's second (new) cruise terminal was opened in 2006 and has capacity to handle two large cruise vessels simultaneously.

Building's facilities include waiting halls, baggage handling area, elevated loading ramp, customs clearance, souvenir shop, check-in desks. Terminal's dedicated parking (4-storey building) has capacity over 1000 vehicles. Parking costs $14 per day (Port Authority subject to change).

Erato Street Terminal serves Carnival Cruise Lines .

(NEW) Poland Avenue Cruise Terminal

In May 2017, NOLA port commented about converting Poland Avenue Wharf into a new cruise ship terminal facility. In 2016, port officials met with Bywater residents to comment on the proposal. In 2017 the port announced that  RCI Royal Caribbean  starts turnaround operations (NOLA roundtrip departures) after a 3-year hiatus. The news rekindled the new passenger terminal project.

Poland Ave is port's best area for a large-sized cruise terminal, but there is still docking capacity at the existing terminals Erato Street and Julia Street. RCI liners dock on Saturdays at Julia Wharf as scheduled in company's NOLA cruise program 2018 (based on  Vision of the Seas ).

The new passenger terminal's building is expected to cost over USD 50 million. The project has no official timeline or funding. It would also need an environmental review - the process could take years.

City of New Orleans at Night

Cruises from Louisiana, once departing from the Julia Street Wharf, now leave from the Erato Street Wharf, a larger and newer terminal. The new cruise port is better-suited to accommodating larger ships and features a newer garage. Yearly, this cruise port sees 700,000 travelers pass through.

Carnival Cruise from New Orleans

As a city, New Orleans is ideally positioned for travelers not only from the area but the entire Midwest. From states once forming the Louisiana Purchase, travel is possible via river, rail, and highway. Inside the city, the RiverFront Streetcar Line offers connectivity to the terminal from popular attractions.

For traveling into the area, the Louis Armstrong International Airport is just 17 miles away from the cruise port. A shuttle, arranged at the airport, connects passengers from air travel to the cruise terminal.

Although a Caribbean or European trip offers many beautiful sights to behold, those traveling to take a cruise from Louisiana often end up staying a few days before or after in New Orleans. Activities start practically immediately from the port, which is, in fact, connected to the RiverWalk Shopping Mall. World-renowned landmarks, including the French Quarter, as well as various midscale to luxury hotels, are just a short trip away. Along with nearby attractions are notable features of New Orleans and Louisiana: experience history with a plantation or cemetery tour or see one of the most ebullient events in the making at Mardi Gras World.

6 Easy Transportation Options to the New Orleans Cruise Port

Are you flying into New Orleans for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to worry about driving and parking in the city? No matter your reason, there are plenty of ways to get to the cruise terminal without driving your own car.

New Orleans Steetcar

As a tourist destination, there is a large industry the revolves around getting out-of-towners around New Orleans. Whether you want to come in and head straight to the cruise ship or if you want to arrive early and experience all that New Orleans has to offer, there are transportation options that have you covered.

Below, we cover all the major ways to get around the city, with a focus on getting from the airport to the cruise port.

Location of Port of New Orleans

Before we dive into your best options for getting around, it’s helpful to have a lay of the land and understand the port’s location to the rest of the city.

The cruise terminal is located near the center of New Orleans on the Mississippi River, just a short distance from downtown and the French Quarter.

Coming from the airport? Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport is about 15 miles from the cruise port. It will take you about 25 minutes to get there.

Here is a map showing the cruise terminal in relation to the airport to give you an idea of the location:

Map of New Orleans cruise port

So how should you get around New Orleans? As we said, there are a number of ways to get to your destination. Below we highlight each one, including our recommendation…

Uber & Lyft (Recommended)

Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are approved in New Orleans, offering a great alternative to taxis. We have a full write-up on the services here . Uber and Lyft are wonderful options for convenience and low prices.

Simply pull up the app on your phone, request a ride, and you can be on your way within minutes. Coverage includes everywhere in the greater New Orleans area, including the airport.

So how much does it cost? Estimated fares for either service are about $35-$40 each way between the airport and the cruise port . Given the location of the cruise port near downtown and the French Quarter, roughly the same rate will get you to those popular spots as well.

Keep in mind that this is a rate is for up to four people, unlike taxi fares. Taxis have a flat rate of $14 for one person, or $8 per person for two or more passengers, or the meter fare . Thus, a family of four would expect to pay about $35 using Uber/Lyft to get to the port from the airport, versus at least $32 for a cab.

If you are already in the area (not the airport) and want a ride, we’ve rounded up some estimated costs depending on where you are in the city:

The bottom line is that depending on your level of service and the number of passengers, services like Uber and Lyft can be cheaper than taking a cab. Read more about Uber/Lyft here .

If you’re looking for simplicity, a taxi is a good bet. You don’t have to reserve ahead — just hop in and go. And given their reasonable flat rates from the airport, we think taxis are fairly economical if traveling with two or fewer people.

Taxi rates from the airport to the cruise port are $14 for one passenger . If two or more are riding, it is $8 per person, or the meter fare (whichever is greater). If headed to the Central Business District from the airport, then taxis charge a flat fee of $36 for one or two passengers or $15 per person for three or more.

Cruise Line Shuttles

If you like, you can also book a shuttle provided by the cruise line to take you from the airport to the cruise port. When it’s time to debark after your cruise, the same shuttle can take you back to catch your flight.

If you want to take a cruise line shuttle, it must be booked in advance. While some people opt for this service, we find it expensive and cumbersome.

Instead of going when you’re ready like Uber or a taxi, the shuttles will wait for passengers and are shared vehicles. As well, the shuttles only travel between the airport and cruise port and are only available on cruise day. So if you arrive in town the day before your cruise, then you can’t use the cruise line’s shuttle.

As well, we find the shuttles pricey. Unless you are traveling solo, expect to pay more for a cruise line shuttle than a taxi. For example, Carnival recent rates were $28 one-way per person. So a family of four would pay more than $100 one-way to the cruise port.

Independent Shuttles

If traveling in a large group (10 or more people), there is a shuttle service that specializes in runs from the airport and can get you to the cruise terminal. Airport Shuttle New Orleans serves the airport and can get you to any hotspot around the city — including the port.

Pricing runs about $400 one-way for up to 14 people, or about $30 per person.

To our knowledge, there are no independent shuttles at the moment offering rides for smaller groups or individuals. In that case, an Uber/Lyft or taxi seem to be your best option.

Car Services

Want to arrive to the port in style? Or maybe you are traveling with a large group and need a big vehicle like a passenger bus? In that case you might be interested in a private car service.

There are a number of private companies that offer everything from limousine rides to luxury sedans to vans to shuttle buses. In other words, no matter what sort of ride you need, you can get it.

One thing to keep in mind is that these services are going to be a bit more expensive than just getting a taxi or Lyft to the cruise port. Below we’ve listed a few options for car services in New Orleans.

  • Big Easy Limos — Offers everything from a vintage Rolls Royce to vans to shuttle buses
  • A Regal Limousine Service — Get a ride to the port in a luxury SUV, a shuttle bus or even a Rolls Royce
  • Audubon Coach — Ideal for larger groups, offers buses and limo busses to get you to the cruise port fashionably

Hotels With Shuttles to the Port

One of the nice perks about a city with a booming cruise industry is that hotels in the area roll out the red carpet to cruise passengers. That includes perks including transportation to the cruise port for hotels guests. Not many hotels offer this following the pandemic, but we’ve dug through and found a some that do, along with a number of hotels within walking distance of the New Orleans cruise port.

These shuttles can provide you a convenient ride without headache and hassle.

For more details and a list of New Orleans hotels with shuttles/walking distance to the cruise port, read our article here .

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the least expensive way to get a ride to the port? Looking to save money? If you plan to stay at a hotel the night before your cruise, then we suggest the least expensive way to get to the port is to stay at a hotel with a cruise shuttle.

Not staying at a hotel? In that case you’ll usually find Uber/Lyft or taxi to be the least expensive way to get to the port. It’s about $35 for a ride to the port from the airport for up to four people. Closer locations are even less expensive.

What time should I get a ride back to the airport after my cruise? Most cruise ships arrive back into port early in the morning, often as early as 6-7 a.m. But before you book that flight home, remember that it can take some time to actually get to your flight.

First, it’s normal for it to take 2-3 hours for the entire ship to debark and get through customs and immigration. From there, it’s about half an hour to the airport, not accounting for time waiting for your ride. For that reason, we suggest not booking your departing flight before noon.

What about public transportation options from the airport? Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to get from the airport to the cruise port using public transportation. Major lines around the city require one or more transfers — and walking in New Orleans’ famous heat and humidity — to get from a stop to the terminals.

You can take the 202 Airport Express from the airport into the city. Then you’ll need to transfer over to the Canal Streetcar (48) , which runs to Harrah’s Casino. At that point, you can walk to the cruise terminals, which are about 15 minutes away. One thing to note is that the Airport Express runs only every 1.5 hours, so be prepared for a lengthy wait.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

A company is turning former cruise ships into floating hotels — see inside its largest 'floatel'

  • Bridgemans ServicesGroup operates a fleet of former cruise ships turned into hotels.
  • Its "floatels" are designed to house workers during long-term projects.
  • See its largest 652-cabin floatel with a game room and buffet.

Insider Today

Some old and unwanted cruise ships meet their demise at ship-breaking yards , where they are disassembled and sold for scrap.

Other vessels find a more fortunate fate, receiving a second chance to do what they already do best: serve as floating hotels.

Canada-based Bridgemans Services Group buys and charters former cruise ships to turn into "floatels," outfitted with standard cruise amenities like daily housekeeping, buffets, and relaxing lounges.

But the ships aren't designed to transport tourists from one destination to another anymore. Instead, companies turn to Bridgeman when they need to house workers for a long-term project, whether it be the construction of an offshore wind farm in Europe or the shooting of a major film in a remote destination.

Floatels can accommodate workers in remote destinations where hotels might not be an option.

In more metropolitan areas, Bridgemans says its ships could lessen the stress an inundation of workers might have on the local housing market.

And once they are no longer needed, the vessels depart and "leave no trace behind," the company said.

Over the last decade, Bridgemans has deployed its ships for 15 projects on every continent, Brian Grange, the company's president, told Business Insider.

Grange said that its deployments — most often for liquified natural gas companies — last for an average of two years.

In the past, it has also provided accommodations for MSC Cruises at its Ocean Cay private island and housing for more than 1,000 workers in the Philippines' on a project for the Manila International Airport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company's three ships range from 150 to 652 cabins.

The floatel operator acquired its largest ship, the 561-foot-long MV Isabelle X, in 2023.

In its past life, the 35-year-old vessel sailed around the Baltic Sea as one of Estonia-based Tallink Gruipp's cruise ships.

But gone are its days of leisurely cruising. The 35,000 gross-ton ship is now on its first deployment in Howe Sound, just north of Vancouver, where it's housing more than 600 workers who are building Woodfibre LNG's "net zero" LNG export facility.

Isabelle X underwent a six-month retrofit before it was sent to Howe Sound.

The process included updating the ship's cabins and adding amenities like a game room and an 8,000-square-foot gym.

The latter two are especially important: "We need to make sure we delineate between work and home," Grange told BI. "We have to create a social environment on board these vessels that makes it attractive for workforces around the world."

During their free time, workers can play billiards, relax in the outdoor lounge, or use the ship’s WiFi to catch up on social media.

The sports lounge has large television screens, while the games lounge has darts, ping pong tables, and air hockey.

The 'quiet lounges' are the go-to space for people who need to unwind after a long work day.

Or, they could recharge and catch up on the latest shows in their cabins, which all come with desks, storage, and 32-inch televisions.

Like a typical cruise ship, Bridgemans' vessels have buffets with live cooking stations, a dessert bar, and the occasional themed night.

cruise ship companies in louisiana

The ships' chefs tailor their menus to the demographic and dietary restrictions of the workers on board, the company's president told BI.

Residents can expect at least four protein options, plenty of veggies, and handmade bread and desserts.

Unlike most cruise lines, Bridgemans can pre-purchase all the food it needs before deployment.

cruise ship companies in louisiana

Grange says this allows the ships to maintain food quality and consistency in remote locations.

Remember that deployment in the Philippines during COVID-19? He said the ship had packed almost 800 tons of food ahead of the project.

He wouldn’t disclose the cost to rent one of Bridgemans’ floatels.

cruise ship companies in louisiana

But he did note that the cost of a cabin on the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound is comparable to a hotel room in nearby Vancouver, as is the case with most of its projects near major cities.

The company’s most recent acquisition, the 150-cabin Diamond XI, is currently being retrofitted and would be ready for deployment this year.

According to the company's president, the vessel is small and high-end, likely to be used for sporting events and movie shoots.

It could also be the start of a greater expansion: He hopes to add two or three more vessels to its fleet in the next five years.

"The world has opened up to this as a valued alternative to housing," Grange told BI.

Who knows, the next time you see a cruise ship off the coast, there's a slim but possible chance it could be housing workers — not vacationers.

Princess Cruises welcomes its biggest ship ever with help from a star

Gene Sloan

It took a star to welcome the sun.

The Sun Princess , that is.

Princess Cruises on Tuesday officially hailed the arrival of its newest megavessel — at 177,882 tons, its biggest ever —with the help of "Ted Lasso" star Hannah Waddingham.

The Emmy Award-winning actress and singer presided over a star-studded 19-minute christening ceremony in the ship's Princess Arena theater that included a traditional bottle breaking, with a twist.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Serving as the ship's godmother, Waddingham placed a triangular "sun ray" representing Sun Princess into a sun sculpture on stage to trigger the smashing of a huge bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champagne — a nebuchadnezzar that holds the equivalent of 20 traditional bottles — against the ship's hull.

"As much as theater ripples through my bloodstream, I have the strongest history of maritime in my family," a clearly proud Waddingham said moments before triggering the bottle smash.

She noted that her still-living, 107-year-old grandfather served on convoy ships crossing the Atlantic during World War II. She also grew up boating.

"It's in my blood and in my bones," she added.

Built at the giant Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, Sun Princess is the most notable new Princess ship to debut in more than a decade. Capable of holding up to 5,189 passengers (a record for a Princess ship), it's not only significantly bigger than previous Princess ships but packed with more onboard venues.

The naming celebration came two months after Sun Princess began sailing for the first time with paying passengers, a debut that was unexpectedly delayed by 20 days due to construction issues.

"Sun Princess is incredible. It's the largest, most luxurious love boat ever," John Padgett, Princess president, said at the event, harking back to the line's long-standing tie to the hit television show "The Love Boat" that ran in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Three stars from the show — Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell and Jill Whelan, who played bartender Isaac Washington, ship's doctor Adam Bricker and captain's daughter Vicki Stubing, respectively — were in attendance at the event.

The "Love Boat" stars were seated just a couple rows behind Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison and CEO Josh Weinstein.

Carnival Corporation is the parent company of Princess Cruises.

Makoto Okuwa, a James Beard Foundation honoree who designed a sushi eatery for Sun Princess, and Dario Cecchini, a celebrity Italian butcher who created a meat-focused restaurant for the ship, were also in attendance. So was the Brazilian artist Romero Britto, who sat to the right of Arison. Britto's colorful, upbeat art is the theme for the ship's high-end restaurant, Love by Britto.

Other celebrities at the event included model and television personality Tyra Banks, wildlife show host Jeff Corwin, fashion designer and television host Randy Fenoli and mixologist Rob Floyd. British singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield performed her smash hit "Pocketful of Sunshine" among other hit songs on the top deck of the ship after the ceremony.

The biggest Princess ship ever

Under development for more than six years, Sun Princess is the first of the new Sphere Class of Princess vessels. The ships have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess vessels and offer several new-for-the-line features.

First look: Inside Sun Princess, the giant new ship from Princess Cruises

Sun Princess is the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — part of an effort to draw more upscale customers to the brand.

Additionally, Sun Princess offers an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" on the ship's extra-wide 10th deck that features exclusive access to a private deck area. The top deck of the ship also received some unusual-for-Princess sizzle. Passengers will find a glass-dome-topped pool area that transforms into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Other differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. But don't worry, buffet lovers: There still is a buffetlike venue on the ship. Called The Eatery, it's eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off its outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, the Princess Arena, also has a new look. Its new-for-Princess, in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess features a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles.

Princess also has revamped its main dining room program with the debut of Sun Princess. It now offers three distinct options for cruisers in its main dining rooms, ranging from a traditional fixed seating experience to a casual, come-when-you-want option that includes quick-served meals and even breakfast for dinner .

The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years. With its debut, Princess now has 16 vessels in its fleet that collectively have room for about 50,000 passengers. That makes Princess the world's fifth-biggest cruise line, behind Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

Sun Princess is initially sailing in Europe through the fall. It'll then reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $577 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

A second ship in the new Sphere Class series, to be called Star Princess, is on order from the Fincantieri shipyard for delivery in 2025. Its first voyage is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2025, and will take place in the Mediterranean.

North Korea tests new 'super-large warhead' and anti-ship missile

North Korea conducts a test launch of a "Pyoljji-1-2" new-type anti-aircraft missile in this photo released Saturday.

North Korea has conducted a test of a “super-large warhead” for its "strategic" cruise missiles as well as a test-firing of a new anti-aircraft missile, state-run media said Saturday, as Pyongyang continues to add new weapons to its growing arsenal.

“Through the test launch, a certain goal was attained,” it added without giving more details.

North Korea uses the term “strategic” to refer to weapons that are intended to carry nuclear warheads.

“Both tests were part of the regular activities of the administration and its affiliated defense science institutes for the rapid development of technologies in various aspects such as tactical and technical performance and operation of new-type weapon systems,” the KCNA report said, adding that they “had nothing to do with” the regional security situation.

Earlier this month, North Korea tested what it said was a new type of intermediate-range solid-fueled ballistic missile loaded with a newly developed hypersonic glide vehicle. While the launches of ballistic missiles have garnered headlines, the nuclear-armed country has also tested a number of new strategic cruise missiles and submarine-launched weapons since the beginning of the year.

Experts say cruise missiles present a unique danger in that they can fly low and maneuver, making them potentially very difficult to intercept by air and missile defenses. Unlike ballistic weapons, North Korea’s cruise missiles are not banned under United Nations sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
