Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful landlocked state in North India . With natural beauty spread all around, it is no less than a paradise on earth. I have been to many places in Himachal Pradesh but still can't have enough of it.

The mountains, the rivers, the waterfalls, lush green meadows, snow-clad peaks, dense forests, religious sites, beautiful flora, and fauna, you name it and Himachal Pradesh has it.

Be it trekking in the cold desert mountain in Spiti Valley or backpacking in Parvati Valley , Himachal Pradesh attracts adventurers from all over India.

One of the most beautiful, family-friendly circuits in Himachal Pradesh is Dalhousie – Chamba – Khajjiar.

If snow-capped mountains and dense forests are your calling, don't forget to check out my posts on Sikkim .

Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itineraery

So, I am going to present an ideal itinerary for Dalhousie including day trips to Chamba and Khajjiar. This circuit is lush green and breathtakingly beautiful.

So, it is very difficult to squeeze in all the places worth visiting in three days. But still, I have tried to cover the best places to visit in Dalhousie and its neighborhood here.

This is the best 3-day itinerary for Dalhousie.

DAY 1 – Arrive Dalhousie in the morning. Visit nearby places of interest in Dalhousie.

DAY 2 – Reserve whole day to visit Chamba

DAY3 – Go to Khajjiar via Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

But before we embark on this virtual trip, let’s answer some practical questions.

How to reach Dalhousie?

The nearest international airport to Dalhousie is Delhi. From Delhi, you can take a flight to Chandigarh and then proceed to Dalhousie on a cab.

Or you can reach Delhi and from there you can go on a Volvo bus, which runs daily. If you want to travel by train, you can go up to Pathankot, which is the nearest railway station and from there you can hire a cab.

Dalhousie is located 560 km away from Delhi. You can also book a taxi for a scenic road trip from Delhi to Dalhousie.

Where to stay in Dalhousie?

There is no dearth of hotels and resorts in Dalhousie. You can easily get one to fit your budget. Here are some recommedations:

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 1

My first strong recommendation, if you are traveling by road or train, travel overnight to reach Dalhousie early in the morning. This way you will get to utilize whole day for going around Dalhousie. I say so because Dalhousie is such a naturally beautiful and peaceful place that you need to be calm to enjoy the scenery and soak in the beauty and tranquility of the place. You can't rush the things and still hope to enjoy.

Subhash Chowk

dalhousie solo trip

So, the day starts with you arriving in Dalhousie. After checking in to your hotel and freshening up, just get out of your hotel and head straight to Subhash Chowk.

It is more of a viewpoint, where you get a breathtaking view of the snow-clad mountains (if it has snowed), dense forests and lush green valley, all at one place. You can click as many selfies and pictures as you want.

The view is truly mesmerizing, and you won't feel like leaving the place. Though it is called a chowk (crossing) it actually has five different roads originating from or crossing here. this place has been named after great freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

While at Subhash Chowk, go to iconic St. Francis Church , which is located right at Subhash Chowk. This church was built in the year 1894 in British architectural style. The interesting thing is that the army and civilians joined hands to build this church.

The inside of the church has glass and stonework. St. Francis Church has been maintained so well that nobody can say that this structure is more than 100 years old. It is surrounded by tall Deodar trees. And the ambiance of the church is so peaceful it will rejuvenate your soul.

From Subhash Chowk move to Panjpula. This picnic-cum-adventure spot is about 5km from Subhash Chowk. It is also the source of a stream that flows from the top and is said to supply water to the whole of Dalhousie.

Trek to the top to get a magnificent view. Walk alongside the stream and admire its flow. You can indulge in any of the adventure sports on offer here. Enjoy hot pakoras with steaming coffee.

Enjoy the density of the forest around the place. Buy some souvenirs. And above all, enjoy the snow if it is there (I was lucky that it had snowed only a couple of days earlier, so I could actually walk on the snow).

Gandhi Chowk

Once you are done, move over to Gandhi Chowk. It is the mall road and the main shopping center of Dalhousie. Though it is not a very big market you can see many eateries making local delicacies, which you can enjoy.

There are shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs and other stuff. Spend some time here and do your shopping. There is a Tibetan market also at this place. Check out my Narkanda Diary also.

Talking of Gandhi Chowk, there are two ways of reaching here. First is, you can walk from Subhash Chowk via Garam Sadak. This is a walk of 1 km but a very enjoyable one. Garam Sadak is called so because it receives sunlight throughout the year and hence remains warm.

This road runs along a deep valley and while you walk the road, you can enjoy the stunning view of the valley as well as hills. From Gandhi Chowk, you can take a cab to go to Panjpula.

Or alternately, you can do it another way around. You can visit Panjpula first and then stop at Gandhi Chowk on your return journey.

Dalhousie Itinerary

Now, you must be tired, so you can go back to your hotel to end the day, and relax.

Dalhousie itinerary Day 2- Visit Chamba

Rock garden.

You can explore Chamba today. The first stop would be the Rock Garden. It is an amazing sight. This is a natural rock garden.

Rocks have themselves fallen after disintegrating from mountains and have formed an attractive pattern here. The place has been developed as a tourist spot and is ideal for taking selfies and clicking pictures.

Chamera lake

Chamera Lake - Itinerary for Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba

Next, you reach Chamera dam and Chamera lake. Chamera dam has been built on the river Ravi, which flows through this place. The dam produces hydroelectricity. The lake has been built by the water collected around the dam.

It is a beautiful place. The lake is surrounded by lush green as well as snow-clad hills and is a very peaceful place. You can enjoy boating here in different types of boats and admire the beauty all around. Spend 2-3 hours at Chamera lake and visit the dam also.

When you drive further up, you start to move along the river Ravi, which is another thrilling site You can stop at a suitable spot for a little while. Enjoy the flow of the river. Spend time on the river bank and take pictures.

Exploring Chamba town

When you near Chamba town, you start to see small but lush green farms on the roadside. You can't help but admire the scenery.

Moving into Chamba town, head straight to Laxminarayan temple in the center of the city, the oldest and the largest temple of Chamba. There are six beautiful idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The main idol of Lord Vishnu is made of marble and is a sight in itself. The most amazing thing about the temple is that it always remains pleasant inside irrespective of the weather outside.

Next, go to Himachal emporium in Raja Umed Singh's Rang Mahal . Here you can buy local handicrafts like shawls and handkerchiefs. Its timings are from 10 am to 1 pm and then from 2 pm to 5 pm.

There are a couple of more beautiful temples around which you can visit if you have the time.

That will end day 2 and you can return to your hotel and relax.

In the Indian terrain, shoes can make or break your travel experiences. Read to know about the best travel shoes in India .

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 3 – explore Khajjiar

This could be the most interesting day of your trip. This could be the most hectic yet most enjoyable day of your trip. I was unfortunate to miss a few of these places as the road was closed due to snowfall during my visit.

Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

You start early and reach Kalatop wildlife sanctuary. Kalatop wildlife sanctuary has a variety of wildlife and verdant grasslands.

Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and tall trees along with pleasing streams, this place offers you the most enchanting experience. Just explore the sanctuary and click pictures. It is very rich in flora and fauna. You will find species like leopard, bear, deer, langur, jackal, barking goral and many beautiful birds.

Ganji Pahadi

From here, the next stop will be Ganji Pahadi. It is again a beautiful place. The name says it all. Ganji means bald and Pahadi means hill. This has been named so because of its landscape. Ganji Pahadi doesn't have any flora on it.

But the brilliance of the place is in the colors it reflects. It offers a panoramic view from the top. During winters it is fully covered in snow making it an offbeat winter wonderland of India .

Khajjiar Meadows - Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itinerary

Now moving to last but definitely not the least part of the trip. From here you head to Khajjiar. It is rightly called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. This is one place you should not miss for your life.

Unbelievably beautiful landscape, the surroundings, and the whole atmosphere make it a paradise. Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped lush green meadow with a small lake at the center. It is the most picturesque place you could ever see.

It is a sight for eyes to behold. Just go there and throw yourself on the green grass under the blue sky and soak in the beauty and tranquility that is lying all around.

You can enjoy adventure sports also like zorbing and paragliding. There is a small ancient temple here called Khajji Nag temple. Go there and seek blessings. While returning, stop at Jai Jagdambe temple, which has an 84 feet high statue of Lord Shiva.

So, return to your hotel and take rest.

So, this is the best three-day itinerary for Dalhousie-Chamba-Khajjiar and I am sure you will be three most enjoyable days you would ever have. Pin the image below to save it for later.

What an incredibly detailed itinerary! This looks like an absolute beautiful place to explore. I normally go for city destinations, but this would be great for some relaxation. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like a great itinerary, full of variety. I would love to check out Chamera Lake, although I might need to spend more than 2-3 hours there! It’s so beautiful. The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary also sounds pretty cool to check out some of the local wildlife!

The itinerary sounds perfect for someone who does not know the area of India very well at all. When visiting Kalatop is it guaranteed that you can see leopards? This is something that I would love to experience. Chamera Lake and Dam looks such a peaceful area and very picturesque with the snowcapped mountains in the distance. Thanks for sharing this great itinerary.

Thanks Jane. I don’t think viewing leopards or tigers in India is guaranteed anywhere.Unlike lions which stay in barren lands, these delusive creatures love to stay in dense forests and are usually hidden from common sight.

This is a nice and varied itinerary about visiting this part of India. I’ve never been to the country, so enjoyed reading about Dalhousie and Chamba. The lake is so pretty, and I’d probably take a few hundred photos if I ever visit. I appreciate the accommodation options given too.

This is a lovey stretch too visit…

Chamera Lake is absolutely gorgeous! And I would love to visit the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary to see all the local wildlife. I can see why Khajjiar is called Mini Switzerland! So funny!

This is a beautiful itinerary of the most picturesque cities of HP. I have not been to any of these. I am planning for Spiti this summer, can these cities be included in Spiti itinerary? Would it be a good idea?

I think it would be a great idea!

I was born in India and did have the opportunity to visit Dalhousie when I was a child and this post brought back loads of memories I must say. I did not visit the other places but would love to go back there and discover Khajjar for sure for its natural beauty. I must admit I quite like the cuisine around this part of India and its rich and perfect suited for the cold weather. The wildlife safari looks good for the kids as well so will add that too. THANKS

Dalhousie looks amazing! I have never been to India but as I read more and more about it, I really want to go. I also love the photo from the lake, that looks like a lovely place to explore. I did not know that there is snow in India.

I have been to both Dalhousie and Khajjiar and loved the places. Though it is over-crowded during peak seasons. I prefer to stay in a secluded place, away from the crowd. This is a good itinerary for people who are planning to visit the places during summer vacation.

Thank you all for your nice comments. There are many more unexplored amazing places to see in India. Visit my website and get to know about these hidden gems of India.

I’m really curious about the adventure sports at Panjpula! I am down for just about any kind of adventure sport, so I feel like I’d want to spend more time there than at the markets/shopping areas. I just visited a hydroelectric waterfall in Peru and found it to be fascinating, so I’d love to visit the dam and learn more about how it generates hydroelectric energy!

Ah, it’s fascinating. I want to do that too.

I was really surprised that there was a Mini Switzerland in India. I didn’t imagine the landscape would look like that. Thanks for the very detailed itinerary. I am planning a trip to India in the next two years so this will be very helpful.

Glad to be of help!

I am not very familiar with India – but Himachal Pradesh sounds like a great place to visit. The town of Khajjiar is awesome – love that it is a mini-Switzerland of India! I would love to go there and just relax in the grass taking it all in!

Thank you. And thanks to the guest writer.

Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about India yet since I haven’t been able to visit, so I was happy that you described so well where in India this place is. I love the scenery and it looks like an awesome place to do some outdoors activities. It is interesting to see that they have those buildings reminding of Switzerland.

I love hill stations and therefore would love to visit Dalhousie, Khajjiar, and Chamba. But I was always confused about where to start and thanks to you for sharing a detailed itinerary as it is very helpful. Khajjiar really looks like Switzerland and really an amazing spot.

Dalhousie looks incredible. We were in Dharmshala last year and heard many wonderful things about it from other travellers too. Would love to include it on our next trip to India

I love the idea of driving from Delhi to Dalhousie so I could take in the beautiful scenery on the way. And then again on foot at Garam Sadak to walk the road along the valley for more mountain scenes. Chamera Lake looks absolutely picture perfect, too! You’ve offered some great suggestions that suit this “slow travel” gal. Thank you!

Thank you for the detailed blog, it really is very helpful. we are visiting with family and an infant during the last 3 days of the november month. we expect some snow or it is going to be dry and cold winter weather.

This post brought back one of my fondest childhood memories of taking a road trip with my parents and grandparents during the summer break to Dalhousie, Khajiiar, Chamba and then heading off to Dharamshala. We had stayed overnight in Dalhousie – can still recall that feeling of waking up to the scent of fresh pine and view of misty mountains beyond. Loved the surrounding views from the lush meadow in Khajiiar.

Thanks Aditi. I am yet to visit this beautiful place. Thanks to our guest author for the guide.

I would have loved the article if you should have also mentioned where I can have a relaxing stay in Dalhousie. Except for that, you have almost mentioned everything that a person requires before making their trip to Dalhousie, Khajjiar, & Chamba.

The mountain views look amazing! India’s mountain ranges look so breathtakingly green!

Backpacking to Dalhousie for 2 Days: The Complete Itinerary

dalhousie solo trip

traveller Avdhesh

Dalhousie two day itinerary should be able to cover most of this small but beautiful town. Dalhousie is one of the pristine hill towns of Himachal Pradesh. It is located in Chamba district at an elevation of more than 6400 feet above sea level. It treats its visitors with breathtaking views of the majestic snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range, Sach Pass and  Pangi Valley

Dalhousie is a treasure trove of ancient Hindu temples, British architecture, traditional handicrafts, art and culture. It is situated on five different hills amidst fragrant pines, rhododendrons and oak trees. It is for this reason that your Dalhousie two day itinerary should be able to help you maximize travel in this wondrous town.

Being in this beautiful region and not being able to explore it fully will be a pity. Hence, plan and stick to an itinerary that assists you in making the most out of your trip. Usually, a trip to Dalhousie is made as complementary to a Chamba trip overall. If you’re in this beautiful region for sightseeing, 2 days are enough for covering Dalhousie and two days should be kept for Chamba.

Dalhousie

A quick look at the Dalhousie Two Day Itinerary

Known for its pleasant climate and alluring valleys, Dalhousie is one of the must-visit places in Himachal Pradesh . It’s an ideal place for travellers, explorers and adventure enthusiasts who love to go into the wild and experience an adrenaline rush. From adventurous activities to some light strolling, from locally made stuff to Tibetan handicrafts, each corner of Dalhousie has something unique to offer you.

In case you’re in Himachal from an insider’s exploration point of view, make sure to cover Chamba in detail along with places like Spiti Valley and Dharamshala- McleodGanj .

Before I dwell on the intricacies of Dalhousie as a region, here’s a brief overview of the Dalhousie two day itinerary that will highlight the essential aspects of your trip.

Ideal Dalhousie Two Day Itinerary for spending 48 hours optimally

The ideal Dalhousie two day itinerary should be planned in a way so as to cover the following five places within 48 hours. Here is what I would recommend.

Day 1: Explore India’s Mini Switzerland ‘Khajjiar’ and Chamba on the 1st day of Dalhousie two day visit

Day 1 should begin with a great breakfast. If you have booked a hostel, they will provide you with breakfast without any extra charges. Hostels are a great choice for solo travellers in the region. They are safe, comfortable and within budget. Go stops Dalhousie is a wonderful hostel if you are travelling solo in the region. I would definitely suggest you stay here.

Hire a cab or take a bike on rent and move towards Khajjiar. Spend quality time there. Many adventure sports activities are available in Khajiar. You can do zorbing, Horse riding, Paragliding, etc.

Dalhousie two day itinerary

You can try a number of adventure sports in Khajjiar. In addition to horse riding, and zorbing, you could go paragliding around the area. It’s truly an unforgettable experience. However, make sure that the organisers you opt for are safe and trusted.

If you don’t want to indulge in any adventurous activity, feel free to simply enjoy the alluring beauty of the place. Listen to the local melodies there.

After lunch, move towards Chamba town. It takes almost an hour to reach Chamba from Dalhousie. In Chamba town, visit:

  • Chamunda Devi temple
  • Laxmi Narayan Temple which was built in the 10th century
  • Bhuri Singh Museum.

You can relax and enjoy the ambience of the town, by simply strolling at Chamba Chowgan or move to a nearby village to explore more.

After spending a good time in Chamba Town, return to your place of stay in the evening and enjoy stargazing.

Day 2: On 2nd day of your Dalhousie Trip, Visit Dainkund, Chamera Lake and St. Francis Church

Start your second day by witnessing the astonishing sunrise view from the Dainkund Peak. Visit Pohlani Mata Temple there and enjoy the fresh and fragrant air along with the 360-degree view.

You can also camp there if you wish to take a quick nap till the afternoon. To me, a quick nap or rest at a beautiful peak is very soothing.

Stay Responsible on your 2 days Dalhousie visit

Where to stay in Dalhousie and Khajjiar

From luxury stays to budget options to backpackers’ hostels, there are multiple stay options in Dalhousie for every budget.

In Dalhousie, we stayed at Grand View Hotel. Located in the heart of Dalhousie, this 120-year-old vintage hotel is the oldest in Dalhousie. It has both luxury and economical rooms. Colonial architecture, breathtaking views, and British-style multi-cuisine restaurants are some of its specialties.

In Khajjiar we stayed in Hotel Mini Swiss. Equipped with all the modern amenities, Mini Swiss is a luxury hotel. It is just 10 minutes walking distance from the major attraction of Khajjiar.

Where to stay in Dalhousie

Our itinerary for a 3-day trip to Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Day 1: Reached Dalhousie in the morning and stayed in Grand View Hotel. Explored Dalhousie on foot.

Day 2: Went to visit Dainkund Peak, Kalatop Peak, and night stay in Khajjiar.

Day 3: Sunrise in Khajjiar Park, drive up to Chamba, back to Dalhousie, and an overnight train from Pathankot for back home to Delhi.

Day-wise breakdown of our trip to Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Day 1: reach dalhousie.

  • Reach Dalhousie early in the morning by taking an overnight bus/train from Delhi.
  • Check-in at your hotel. We stayed at Grand View Hotel in Dalhousie. It was just a minute’s walk from where our bus dropped us in Dalhousie.
  • After getting freshen up, we walked up to Mall Road (also called Gandhi Chowk) from our hotel. It took us around 15-20 minutes. Always bustling with activity, Gandhi Chowk is the high street of the town with shopping places, eateries, restaurants, bookstores, bars, and hotels. There are many street food options here that one can enjoy.
  • Visit St. John’s Church which is on Mall Road itself. The architecture of the church is inspired by the Victorian era which adds an aesthetical charm to the place. Lunch at Kwality Restaurant on Mall Road.
  • Visit Panchpulla Waterfall. It is around 3 km from Mall Road of Dalhousie. We walked 3 km to reach Panchpulla which took us more than an hour to reach there. But we enjoyed the views and weather of Dalhousie while walking. It is a touristy location, so you will find it a bit crowded. More than the waterfall, we enjoyed our walk up there. There are several eating options and souvenir shops in the local market. We had already stuffed ourselves too much at the Mall road that we were full even after walking 3 km in the mountains. While on our way back, we hitchhiked to reach Mall Road.
  • We rented a bike from Motorbikevala at Subhash chowk to visit places around Dalhousie.
  • Enjoyed evening activities at Grand View Hotel and had an amazing buffet for Dinner.

Day 2: Explore places around Dalhousie

  • We enjoyed an amazing buffet breakfast at our hotel and left for exploring places around Dalhousie.
  • Visit Monga’s Bakery.
  • Visit Dainkund Peak (13 km from Dalhousie). It is the highest peak in Dalhousie and from here one can get an unobstructed view of the entire valley. You can reach the peak after an easy hike of 2 km. One can also visit a local temple dedicated to Pohlani Devi which is a further 1 km hike from the peak.
  • Visit Kalatop peak. Kalatop is a wildlife sanctuary and you can take your vehicle up to the parking area to reach here. After the parking area, a 5-minute walk will take you to the rows of local rooftop restaurants where one can enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains while having lunch. We enjoyed the sun, views, and delicious crisp hot bread pakoras while sitting at one of the rooftop restaurants.
  • Leave for Khajjiar and stay overnight. We stayed in Hotel Mini Swiss. By the time we reached Khajjiar, it went dark so we took a rest for the day.
  • Dinner at the hotel.

Offbeat places to visit in Dalhousie

Day 3: Sunrise at Khajjiar Park

  • Located about 20 kilometers from Dalhousie, Khajjiar is the favorite of both honeymooners and adventurers. Khajjiar is mainly famous for its park which is a vast expanse of meadows surrounded by Deodar trees. The park is always packed with tourists, so we visited it early morning around 7:00 AM and there was not even a single person in sight during that time. We had it all for ourselves and during this time the mist evaporates from the grass and it is an amazing time to visit this place.
  • After breakfast, we left for Chamba with a short stop at Jot Pass. The drive from Khajjiar to Chamba is beautiful.
  • Visit Laxmi Narayan Temple and stroll around Mall Road of Chamba.
  • If you have extra days in hand, you can visit other attractions in Chamba and stay overnight.
  • We had a train to catch the same day, so we left for Dalhousie.
  • Hired a taxi to Pathankot Cantt Railway Station.
  • Train to Delhi.

Places To Visit Near Dalhousie — An Ideal One Day Itinerary

During my recent one-week trip across Chamba district, I happened to cover some of the best places to visit near Dalhousie including Jot Pass, Khajjiar, Kalatop and Dalhousie market, all in one day.

Though a little action-packed, now that I’m writing this blog I think it was, in fact, the best one day Dalhousie itinerary.

To start with, I want to tell you that I was staying at ETU homestay (Explore the Unexplored) in Bakloh — about  35 km from Dalhousie, or 25 km from Banikhet. If you are coming from Pathankot, you don’t even need to go to Dalhousie. Save yourself from the traffic.

For me, staying at Bakloh was, staying at someplace quieter, away from the crowded Dalhousie & still be able to explore the nearby tourist places. You can check their website if you want to stay with them. I will soon be writing more blogs about my one-week itinerary with them, and the places covered (including Bharmour and Kugti village).

For now, here’s a video from my Youtube channel for the same one-day Dalhousie itinerary I am going to discuss in this blog here…

Places To Visit Near Dalhousie

To start with, let me tell you that you can spend a month in this area and still not need to repeat a destination. From offbeat villages to frequented markets, there’s a lot to see and explore.

Other than the places I covered (Jot Pass, Kalatop, Dalhousie market and Khajjiar) I suggest you visit Dainkund Peak, St Francis Catholic Church, Panchpula, Ganji Pahadi, Satdhara Falls, Chamera Lake, Laxmi Narayan Temple, Bakrota Hills, Rang Mahal, and a lot more.

It is also possible to do a 2-day trip (or one-day if you want to hurry it up) to Sach Pass. Read this blog for Sach Pass itinerary .

One Day Dalhousie Itinerary

Here’s how it is going to look like in a map:

dalhousie itinerary

Stop 1: Jot Pass

Located at 2880 meters above the sea level Jot Pass is one of the popular places to visit near Dalhousie for locals. You come here any time of the year and you will find patches of snow on the top.

At a distance, and from the top point, you get sweeping panoramic views of the mighty Dhauladhar. The Dhauladhar peaks, again, will be snow-covered.

jot nature park

From Jot Pass, you will have to walk uphill 10-15 minutes to reach the top, located inside the Jot Nature Park. There’s an entry fee of 10 Rupees per person to access the Nature Park. Inside, you will come across some information about Himachal’s flora, fauna and wildlife.

jot viewpoint

If you don’t want to walk to the top, located inside Jot Nature Park, make a short halt at Jot Pass overlooking the Chuwadi Valley. From Jot Pass, Chuwadi Valley is located 23 kilometres away.

I would count Jot as one of the best offbeat travel destinations in Himachal Pradesh . If you want to visit someplace quieter than Chail or Shimla or Manali , Jot is the place to be.

dalhousie

Stop 2: Khajjiar

Khajjiar is often referred to as the Mini Switzerland of India, and in just once glance it is easy to understand why. A massive beautiful meadow surrounded by tall Deodar and Cedar trees, and in the middle, a small stream-fed lake — that’s what Khajjiar is, in nutshell.

dalhousie solo trip

The landscapes in Khajjiar are of the sorts of a typical Himachal. No wonder, it is one of the best places to visit near Dalhousie.

In Khajjiar you will also find a 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple dedicated to a serpent god. It is worth visiting the temple and studying its beautiful architecture.

dalhousie solo trip

The best time to visit Khajjiar will be during summer. There are places to eat near the lake, as well as a few homestays if you want to make Khajjiar your base for a few nights.

For photographers and Instagram-aficionados, the ideal time to visit will be during the morning when we have the soft morning light, but I understand it won’t be possible if we are doing the same one-day Dalhousie itinerary since we have an order to follow. Jot Pass, apparently, will take some time too.

khajjiar

It is possible to do horse-riding and zorbing there. We also have a paragliding site located 0.5km from Khajjiar, near the 82m tall Shiva Statue.

shiva statue khajjiar

Stop 3: Kalatop

Kalatop is one of the popular places to visit near Dalhousie. It is most popular for those who want to experience snow-capped peaks of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges. The last point of Kalatop, where you can find a few places to eat and a few homestays to stay (for about 1000 Rupees a night), draws tourists from across India.

It is located approximately 12 km from Dalhousie and inside the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Tourists need to pay an entry fee for their car and motorcycle to access the wildlife area (at LakkadMandi).

kalatop wildlife sanctuary

Also called the Kalatop-Khajiar Sanctuary, it houses oaks, pines, rhododendron and deodar trees.

Since we got a little late to get to the top point, we couldn’t see much of the view (and it was quite foggy too) but the village and architecture was something worth witnessing.

kalatop

The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the least explored areas in Dalhousie.

Stop 4: Dalhousie Market

For anyone visiting Dalhousie, visiting the market, particularly after sunset is a must. And that’s what I suggest you do too. During day-time, the mall road in Dalhousie can feel a little crowded to some people. But evenings are comparatively quieter. They are perfect.

dalhousie mall road

Take a still across the mall-road and the Gandhi Square, buy souvenirs.

And in the end, conclude your day trip with a memorable dinner. I suggest you guys check out Cafe Dalhousie.

places to visit in dalhousie

There is a lot more to see and do than what is suggested in this blog. To see all that Dalhousie has to offer you may need at least a week, but I understand not everyone has such a long time, hence this one day Dalhousie itinerary.

If you are a little short on time, just like I was, the four places mentioned above (Khajjiar, Kalatop, Jot and the Mall Road) make for the top places to see near Dalhousie. Most importantly, if you covered all these places, you won’t be doing more than 100km, which is a good thing for hurried tourists.

Again, I suggest you avoid staying in Dalhousie if you want to enjoy peaceful nights. I recommend Bakloh, and in Bakloh, Explore The Unexplored homestay. Alternatively, you can check out someplace in Banikhet.

That’s all in this Dalhousie travel blog. If you have two days to spare, I suggest you visit a local village and Anan Mata Temple & Waterfall.

Check the Day 2 itinerary video below:

Perfect blog post, thank you for providing such niche details. i have written down everything and will go to Dalhousie as soon as this pandemic ends. My friends have been there but i haven’t. Can’t wait to explore this beautiful place. I have a camera and i love to capture landscapes. I am a foodie but vegetarian. Haha. Love & Thanks.

I’m planning a trip to Dalhousie for this new year, this article will really help me in updating my itinerary with some new places mentioned by you. I’ll suggest one more addition to this list i.e The Elgin Hall, a luxurious & vintage homestay in Dalhousie.

I always love to visit dalhousie spacially in khajjiar lake, the view and the ground is so spellbinding, i wish to come dalousie and dharamshala once again.

Places to Visit in Dalhousie

Panchpula: Surrounded by a cover of green pine and deodar trees, Panchpula is a popular picnic spot in Dalhousie. It is best known for Saptdhara Waterfall, the starting point of the Ganji Pahari trek and activities like Zip Lining, and Burma Bridge.  Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: Thick deodar foliage, a plethora of wildlife, snow capped mountains, carpets of verdant grasslands and easy on the eye streams of fresh water make up the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. The well laid out trekking and hiking trails in the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary make for a great nature walk with views of the towering and immaculate Pir Panjal range. St John’s Church: St John's Church is the oldest church in Dalhousie and assumes great historical significance apart from being a sentinel of Protestant belief in the region. Embodying the Victorian era, the church in Dalhousie is a reminder of the British regime in the region. The interior of the church is adorned with stunning glass paintings of St John the Baptist along with St Peter. Subhash Baoli: Named after the famous freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose, Subhash Baoli is a perennial spring which has medicinal properties and is believed to have cured the freedom fighter of his ill health. It is an ideal spot for picnics and evening strolls.  Mall Road: Gandhi Chowk, or GPO, is the bustling and vibrant street of Dalhousie. Unlike other hill stations, Dalhousie doesn't have a mall road, so Gandhi Chowk is the Mall Road of Dalhousie. Shop for simple local souvenirs, woollen clothes and every-day treasures here. St Francis Church: This is one of the prominent monuments in Dalhousie. Surrounded by Deodar trees outside, the interiors are adorned with Belgian glass and exquisite stone works. The age-old carvings and dioramas tell a story of 100 years of history.  Chamba: Chamba is a Himalayan town located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Located almost 55km from Dalhousie, it makes for a great day trip. Chamba is popular for its traditional handicrafts and art along with the miniature Pahari paintings. It is also the base camp for several treks in the great Himalayan ranges.

Things to Do in Dalhousie

Khajjiar: Known as the "Mini Switzerland of India," Khajjiar is a paradise for nature lovers. The lush green meadow is surrounded by dense deodar forests and offers a mesmerizing view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Besides its natural beauty, Khajjiar offers adventure activities like zorbing and horse riding. You can spend hours here, enjoying the tranquility and taking in the stunning landscapes. Panchpula: Panchpula is a serene spot with gushing waterfalls and a memorial dedicated to the freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh. The main attraction here is the beautiful waterfall that originates from a natural spring. It's a perfect place for a leisurely picnic with friends and family. You can also explore the nearby Satdhara Falls for more natural beauty. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary is a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. It's home to diverse flora and fauna, including pheasants, deer, and leopards. You can embark on a trek through the dense forest trails and enjoy the peaceful environment. The sanctuary also has a forest rest house where you can stay if you wish to spend more time amidst nature. Dainkund Peak: For those seeking panoramic views, a trek to Dainkund Peak is a must. It's the highest peak in the Dalhousie region, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. The trek is relatively easy and takes you through dense pine forests. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with a stunning 360-degree view. Chamera Lake: If you prefer a serene and relaxing experience, Chamera Lake is the place to be. It's an artificial lake formed by the Chamera Dam, surrounded by lush green hills. You can enjoy boating on the lake or simply sit by its banks and soak in the picturesque views. It's an excellent spot for a family outing or a peaceful day in nature. St. John's Church: For a touch of history and spirituality, visit St. John's Church in Dalhousie. This beautiful church showcases neo-Gothic architecture and houses some exquisite stained glass windows. It's a peaceful place for meditation and offers a glimpse into the colonial heritage of the region.

Best Time to Visit Dalhousie

The best time to visit Dalhousie is during the summer months, from March to June. During this period, the weather is pleasant and conducive for outdoor activities. The temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C, making it ideal for sightseeing, trekking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the region. The lush green landscapes, blooming flowers, and clear skies add to the charm of Dalhousie during these months. It's a great time to explore popular attractions like Khajjiar, Dainkund Peak, and Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary.

Food in Dalhousie

Dalhousie, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most popular hill stations, is a treat for the eyes and for the taste buds! Here you get to have delicious Himachali food as well as Tibetan, Chinese,  continental and more.

  • Madra is a delicacy of the state, made by cooking boiled chickpeas or kidney beans in yoghurt along with spices, cardamoms, cloves, cumin, coriander powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida etc.
  • You can have siddu which is prepared by kneading dough of flour with yeast, stuffing it with dal daste made using soaked dal, spices, chillies etc., steamed and then served with meat or vegetables.
  • Many restaurants serve dham , a platter, that consists of rice, dal, rajma, boor ki kadi, curd, jaggery etc.
  • You can also try some bhey which is basically lotus stem that is thinly diced and cooked with onions, gram flour, ginger-garlic paste.
  • Tudkiya bhat is a pahari pulao made using a variety of spices, lentils, yoghurt, potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, cardamoms, cinnamon etc. and is topped off with some lime juice.
  • Do have some mittha which is sweetened rice garnished with dry fruits like cashews, raisins, almonds etc.
  • Given that Dalhousie is close to the China/Tibet border, you can also find eateries serving delicious thukpa , a noodle soup with vegetables or meat. Momos are also quite popular here; steamed or fried, they contain meat or vegetables and are served with a spicy dip. You can also have chowmein here.
  • Apart from this, you would find many restaurants and cafes serving a number of continental dishes like pizzas, burgers, pastas, sandwiches, sizzlers, pancakes and more.
  • A few of the well-known eateries include Shiva Cafe, Mogas Cafe, Tandon Food Corner, Moti Mahal etc.

Shopping in Dalhousie

  • Dalhousie is an excellent destination to buy a bunch of Himachali as well as Tibetan souvenirs. You can find beautiful Kullu shawls in many markets here, made of different materials like angora, lambswool and pashmina and often featuring intricate embroidery.
  • Kashmiri shawls are also sold here owing to the region’s prominent handloom industry.
  • The hill station is also a great place to find some cosy yet simple woollen clothing items like sweaters, jackets, haps, scarves, gloves etc.
  • Since the state is quite close to the Tibetan borders, Dalhousie is also known for its wide array of Tibetan souvenirs; singing bowls, wall hangings, Thangka paintings, dresses, rugs and carpets, prayer wheels, bags, dolls etc. are some of the options.
  • Dalhousie is also known for its yummy jam and marmalade made by locals that you can have with cream and scones.
  • Some of the places where you would find these items include Bhuttico, Tibetan Handicraft Centre, Gandhi Chowk, Himachal Handloom Industry Emporium and DC Khanna Store, amongst others.

Dharamsala Solo Travel Guide

Dharamsala Snowy Mountains

Planning a solo trip to Dharamsala ? Here’s everything you need to know for your visit:

QUICK FACTS

  • Located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamsala is a small city of ~53,000 people.
  • Home of the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama .
  • The center of exiled Tibetans in India, Dharamsala and contains the headquarters of the Central Tibetan Administration .
  • Also spelled: Dharamshala.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

  • Currency:  Indian Rupee  (INR)
  • Spoken languages: Tibetan, Punjabi, Hindi, and English.
  • Best time to visit: from March to October. Perhaps the most interesting time to visit is when the Dalai Lama delivers his teachings (usually in June). Cold winters.
  • Arriving via airport: The best way to reach Dharamsala is to fly to Delhi and take an overnight bus to McleodGanj from the Majnu Ka Tilla bus stand in New Delhi. The AC Sleeper Volvo will cost around Rs. 900 and take approximately 12 hours to arrive. The nearest airport from Dharamsala is Gaggal DHM (Kangra Airport), is 20 km away from McLeodGanj.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Best Dharamshala hostel for solo travelers: Hostel Triangle Folks Mcleodganj . A small, cozy place with welcoming owners (and delicious meals). Clean and well-kept. Beautiful views of the valley, with regular evening bonfires to relax and meet others.
  • McLeodGanj offers a wide range of accommodations, most of which are located near the bus station .
  • For those who want to find a quieter stay, look for accommodations in  Bhagsu or Dharamkot  (small towns within walking distance).
  • Jogiwara   Road has plenty of budget options – with some great views!

GETTING AROUND

  • McLeodGanj can be easily navigated on foot . The nearby points (e.g. Bhagsu and Dharamkot Village ) are within walking distance. Dharamkot is a short but steep hike of approximately 3 km from McLeodGanj Bus station.
  • Chartered Auto Rickshaws are available from the bus station at McLeodGanj. They charge around Rs. 60-Rs.100 to the nearby points.
  • Taxis can be booked by calling +91 1892 221034 – the Bhagsu Taxi Operators Union. Taxis can be booked for the local tours. While rates may change from time to time, they are approved by the Regional Transport Authority and are reasonable.

DHARAMSALA NIGHTLIFE

  • Drinking age is 18 , last call is 12:00 AM (midnight) .
  • Great venues for solo travelers in Dharamshala: Labooze Cafe Bar Lounge, Mcllo Beer Bar and Restaurant (some say it’s overrated, but one of the legendary spots in town).

UNIQUE LANDMARKS TO VISIT

  • The Naam Art Gallery is a permanent exhibition of acrylic paintings by Elizabeth Buschmann, and oil paintings by Alfred W. Hallett.
  • Tsuglagkhang Complex – located on the Temple Road (in front of the Dalai Lama’s residence), this is the largest temple outside of Tibet. Contains a large meditation hall and beautiful murals. Also, check out the Tibet Museum (just opposite the complex).
  • The Tibetan Library , a small but interesting museum containing precious Tibetan literature.
  • Bhagsu town can be easily navigated by foot from McLeodGanj. The area contains some beautiful ancient temples and waterfalls . Look for the  Bhagsunag Fall .
  • Dharamkot Village – a 3 km hike   from the McLeodGanj bus station, this is a quiet village located within a coniferous forest. Here you will find the  Dhamma Vipassana and Tushita Meditation  centers. Tushita offers a 10-day Introductory course on Buddhism from March till October (Tushita is closed from November to February).

INTERESTING WALKS

  • Walk around the Kotwali bazaar – the main shopping area.
  • Head to Bhagsu  – a 3 km walk from Dharamsala, followed by a 1 km hike up to the waterfall.
  • Walk along the mountain paths to Dharamkot Village for a quiet and peaceful forest retreat.
  • Triund Trek – if you are into trekking, climb the hill beyond Dharamkot to Triund for a beautiful view the Himalayan peaks. The summit is 2,875 meters up, and is a fairly long hike. There are overnight accommodations available at Triund.

LOCAL WISDOM

  • Hindi is the national language of the country, and knowing some basic phrases will help greatly in interactions with locals. You may get lucky – English is also used extensively by the local Tibetans.
  • Great restaurants in Dharamsala: Tibet Kitchen, The Clay Oven, Crepe Pancake, Jimmys Italian Kitchen.
  • Great cafes : Common Grounds Cafe, Four Season Cafe, Takhyil Peace Cafe, and Cafe 129.
  • Where to find good cheap eats : just about anywhere, as most cafes and restaurants in Dharamsala offer quality meals at a reasonable price. Check out Lung Ta Japanese Restaurant (on Jogibara Road), which offers elaborate vegetarian meals at very reasonable prices.
  • Dangerous areas : consisting of small villages with friendly and accepting locals, Dharmasala is very different from the (often chaotic) other Indian cities. Locals are very used to Western tourists. In any case, avoid wandering around the Dharamkot or Bhagsu area late at night as most of the mountains do not have any street lights on during the late hours.

Recommended trip duration:  2-3 days

  • Mumbai, India
  • Kolkata, India
  • Delhi, India
  • Kathmandu, Nepal

Here’s Where to Take the Solo Trip of a Lifetime

T aking your first big solo trip is incredibly intimidating, but once you take the plunge there’s truly no better way to get to know yourself. Free of other people’s travel ticks and the need to compromise, it’s a chance to explore the world at your own pace—and to be whoever you truly want to be.

To help you choose your own adventure, we’ve tapped a roster of globetrotters who have embraced going it alone. From small-town gems to bustling capital cities where getting lost is all part of the adventure, here are the places to travel on your own—and a hint at what you might find when you get there.

Seville, Spain

The south lives up to its stereotype as Spain’s more fun-loving, open, and hospitable region. Social life here is a public affair—in the streets, in the plazas, spilling onto cobblestones outside the bars. One friend told me he lived in Seville for years and never saw the inside of his best friend’s house. This makes it easy to strike up a conversation with locals (if you can hold your own with the tricky Andaluz accent) or some friendly study-abroad types (if you can’t).

Scandinavia three ways

Start in Copenhagen to immerse yourself in the Danish metropolis’s vibrant museums, unparalleled food, iconic bars, and rich history ( here’s a handy guide ). Then make your way across the water to Sweden: It’s a quick ride to Malmö, whose quirky art, vibrant food halls, and killer music scene are about to get the spotlight as it hosts Eurovision 2024 . From there, you’ll chug across Sweden’s ruggedly beautiful west coast, where a stop-off in the medieval university town of Lund offers a chance to stretch your legs on a campus that makes US Ivy League colleges feel modern. Then spend a couple days in Gothenburg , whose ultra-hip, post-industrial charms are often overshadowed by Stockholm. Get to know this surprisingly walkable, ultra-green city whose fantastic seafood and wildly overlooked underground music scene live in harmony with the idyllic and old-school island villages reachable by ferry from the city center.

Then it’s off to Oslo, Norway’s biggest city, where world-class museums are dedicated to everything from Edvard Munch to the Nobel Prize , and vikings (obviously). Massive food halls offer a chance to sample Norwegian cuisine (ever had whale burgers?), while bars are overflowing with aquavit. Oslo is a friendly, walkable seaside city full of saunas, boutique shops, and funky galleries surrounded by lush islands and spectacular outdoor art, and it’s nothing but warm vibes even in the cold, dark winter. And if you want to keep the trip going, fairytale Bergen is reachable by one of the most sweeping train/ferry trips on the planet. You’ll cruise through massive fjords—and maybe even see the northern lights if you skip the endless summer sun—en route to the town that inspired Frozen . –Andy Kryza

Bangkok, Thailand

Show up to a bar opening or expat mixer, and a few beers or vodka sodas later you'll be crammed in a tuk-tuk with a motley crew rattling off to a nightclub or afterparty. Years ago, as a tenderfoot tourist in Bangkok, I found myself adopted by a Thai celeb couple and their crew at a Lady Gaga concert, treated afterward to a night of VIP bottle service at what was then Bangkok’s best club. It was a colorful chance encounter, one that Bangkok creates like nowhere else. It was so great that I jetted back to Canada, packed up all my things, and moved there . – Barbara Woolsey

Paris, France

When you go, post up somewhere central and walkable. I booked a quiet apartment through a rental site called Paris Perfect , but if your tastes run more bière than Champagne, a no-frills one-room apartment can run a mere $40 a night on Airbnb (or you can go the hostel route, if you’re really on a budget).

Then, soak up some of the architecture that makes Paris, well, Paris. The Rodin Museum, for instance, sits on the grounds of a grand, 18th-century mansion that the artist himself took over in 1911. Across the street, the Museum of the Army is housed in a palace Louis XIV built for his wounded vets. You’ve got dozens—if not hundreds—of similar spots to hit. The best part? No one is here to rush you off to the next spot, so sit and stay a while. – Sam Eifling

Wales is a safe country overall, which is obviously a plus for solo escapades. The Welsh are also friendly and hospitable folk (just don’t call them British), so when you inevitably tuck into a local pub for a pint, making a new drinking buddy won’t be difficult—especially since English is their most-recognized language. Native Welsh is spoken in more rural areas, but good luck asking for directions to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (yes, that’s a real place). – Brooke Sager

Athens, Greece

On a recent trip to Crete, I found myself alone in Athens for two whole days (a long, COVID-related story). I stayed in the former artisan area of Psiri, which is now considered one of the more up-and-coming neighborhoods. I strolled the cobbled, winding streets of Plaka, the historical center that’s home to the Acropolis, sidewalk cafes, and traditional (albeit touristy) Greek tavernas. I had lunch on a makeshift terrace at a Japanese gastropub called Birdman , whose inventive yakitori-esque cuisine was some of the best I’d ever tasted. I bought artisanal olive oil and mountain tea from a deli-sized gourmet grocery store and treated myself to natural wine and a cheese plate for dinner at Heteroclito , the Greek version of a Parisian wine bar.

The server there was friendlier than my neighborhood bar back in actual Paris, and quickly found me a table despite it being a busy Saturday evening. He didn’t care that I was alone; he didn’t ask if I was waiting for someone to join. He was more interested in why I was in Athens and wanted to tell me how great his city is. The same thing happened on my way to the ferry port to meet my friend the following day. “There are a lot of new hotels opening soon in Athens,” the taxi driver said in near-perfect English. “We hope people will stay longer before going to the islands and see our city.” I’m glad I did. And doing it alone gave me a different insight into the gritty but gorgeous Greek capital that’s all too often overlooked. – Lane Nieset

Glacier National Park, Montana

That fight-or-flight moment will find you in any of America’s National Parks . For the full experience, I recommend Glacier, in Montana. Spanning more than a million acres, with 175 mountains and an epic 745 miles of maintained hiking trails, it’s a vast, beautiful obstacle course. You will see chipmunks and rabbits and marmots, as well as bears and moose. The park encourages hikers to wear jingling bells to scare away bears and always carry bear spray—especially if walking alone. But when you’re alone, that’s when you’ll feel the towering, snow-capped mountains surrounding you. Getting to the end of a trail , or coming upon a peak and taking in an otherworldly view, shrinks you down to size, and reminds you that nature really runs this bitch. – Nicole Schuman

Two things make Belgium a great place for a bike trip : First, it’s the density of great breweries. The entire country is smaller than the state of Maryland and so crammed with world-famous breweries (over 150 of them ) that you can stop at a different one each day. Biking between these breweries is dangerously easy; go on the tour, sample the world-renowned beer , then hop on and ride off to your next pint. Second, the country is completely bonkers for bikes. Some of its biggest celebrities are professional cyclists. There’s a bike shop on every corner, which saved me on two separate occasions, and a surprising number of dedicated bike paths parallel to highways. Drivers are much less threatening than in the States, an important consideration when you’re riding with a belly full of monk-brewed Trappist. – Lewis Kelly

Sometimes, a solo trip doesn’t have to be a grand transcendent adventure or a challenging journey of self-discovery. Sometimes, you only have a week between quitting a job and starting a new one and you want to go somewhere accessible and fun where you don’t have to use too much of your brain to communicate. Ireland is the perfect place to get away from the everyday grind, be anonymous for a little while, eat comforting food, and pet the sweet noses of curious donkeys who peek over the fence of their pasture when your ride pulls to the side of the road. Folks here are friendly and the air is crisp and fresh—except, of course, the one night I stayed in a poorly ventilated, six-person hostel room in Dublin with five roommates who had been out drinking beer all night at The Temple Bar . I don’t recommend that last bit. But I'll never forget it, either. – Carrie Dennis

From city to city, Morocco offers something different. Chefchaouen , with its characteristic blue-washed buildings and the vast Rif Mountain region surrounding them, practically begs to be put on film. Three hours south in Fez, you’ll find an 11th-century leather tannery where animal hides are soaked in limestone vats of cow urine, pigeon feces, quicklime, salt, and water; then, they’re dried and dyed naturally with spices like saffron. If you can forget where the colors are coming from and hold a sprig of mint up to your nose, the sight—dozens of vibrant vats—are seriously something to behold. Locals will ask if you want to see it from a balcony and charge you $5 (a.k.a. 60 dirham) to do so—which Kantor says was well worth it for the shot. Friendly Moroccans genuinely just want to show off what the country has to offer, a mission a photographer instantly shares. – Rebecca Strassberg

February is an ideal time to take a solo trip to Zion National Park ; only 13% of visitors go in the winter months, meaning the usually crowded trails are 87 % more peaceful to explore. It’s also prime time to wander the echoey washes of Goblin Valley State Park , where you can enjoy the otherworldly hoodoos that Bryce Canyon National Park is famous for without the crowds that Bryce is also famous for. If you’re aiming farther north, try Vermilion Cliffs National Monument along the border of Utah and Arizona. Wherever you are, don’t head back to your hotel too early—you’re in the right place for some of the most incredible stargazing you won’t want to miss. – Kastalia Medrano

Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a veritable feast of museums and historical hotspots, which makes it an excellent city for entry-level solo travel. Too shy to strike up a conversation with a stranger? Spend your days seeking the city's best currywurst while wandering between points of interest: Go to Bauhaus-Archiv to see items from Walter Gropius's iconic design school, and then head to Kulturforum , a complex of cultural buildings that includes the Neue Nationalgalerie , which houses 20th-century paintings. Climb to the top of the Berlin Cathedral for the view. Then, maybe on your third or fourth night in town, make a weird friend who’s just as alone as you are. Invite them to eat a doner kebab for dinner and then see if you can get past the bouncer at Berghain , a club with one of the strictest door policies around. You probably won’t, so move on and dance to trance music until 7 am at a club you can’t remember the name of instead. That’s what I did, at least. – Carrie Dennis

Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

To make life there tolerable, the locals have become alarmingly good at making friends. I stayed in Whitehorse for two weeks; by the time I left, it felt like I was abandoning my hometown. Within 24 hours of arriving, I experienced the following: First, a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend heard I needed to borrow a Wi-Fi router, came over, and installed it. Then, he invited me to dinner at his house. Not long after, he offered to lend me his car to pick up groceries.

Whitehorse is also surrounded by scads of great opportunities to hike, mountain bike, kayak, or ski and dogsled in the winter months . It offers honest-to-goodness untamed wilderness, with all the associated rewards—and risks. This is where your new friends will come in handy. When you’re one twisted ankle away from a seven-hour limp back to civilization, having someone to lean on is priceless. Plus, most locals carry bear spray with them almost everywhere—with good reason. – Lewis Kelly

Sample the oysters in the ancient village of Ston, and take a dip in front of the Sea Organ in the town of Zadar, where the waves make a musical instrument out of the strategically hollowed-out marble steps descending into the water. Stop in Pag for a wheel of what many consider the best sheep’s cheese in the world. And no matter where along this dazzling aqua-green coastline you end your night, tuck yourself into a bar with a glass of the local red and ask your bartender for their recommendations for swimming holes to hit the next day. ( Might not hurt to smoke a little weed while you’re in Croatia, either .) – Kastalia Medrano

Tokyo, Japan

For non-Japanese visitors, few places will make you feel more foreign than Tokyo. This is a feature, not a bug. Roam the streets of Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Shibuya and you’ll find a wide array of bar and dining experiences catering to solo travelers, from vending machine-style ramen booths to the tiny bars stacked upon another in cramped alleys, where shouts of “kanpai” with each highball are as omnipresent and inviting as the smell of sizzling yakitori. Taking a solo morning omakase sushi set at the famous Tsukiji fish market is a mind-altering experience that lets you commune with your food and its makers in understood silence, while the millennia-old shrines and forests around the city are prime spots for quiet introspection. Whether you’re here for the food, sightseeing, Ghibli , shopping, sumo, or a chance to let your freak flag fly until dawn with like-minded cosplayers, you’ll find what you’re looking for… and probably a lot more.

Even better, the Shinkasen bullet train makes seeing more of the country a cinch—the ancient shrines and temples of Kyoto, the seafood-intensive delights of Osaka, and the serene nature of Hakone all within a comfortable high-speed ride from Tokyo station (the Mt. Fuji views are a huge bonus). Sweetening the deal? Post-Olympics Tokyo has a huge surplus of affordable hotel rooms, and the city’s famous hospitality has never been more fine-tuned to welcome foreigners. –Andy Kryza Want more Thrillist?
