Darjeeling to Gangtok – How to Reach & A Kickass Itinerary

Darjeeling , Sikkim , West Bengal

Darjeeling to Gangtok

Last Updated on: Feb 16, 2024

Darjeeling and Gangtok are the two most coveted hill stations in Eastern India for travellers. Both Darjeeling and Gangtok are blessed with magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga ranges, pleasant weather and some wonderful tourist attractions. The distance between Darjeeling to Gangtok is about 100 km and these two destinations are often visited together. Every year a lot of tourists visit Gangtok and Darjeeling, especially in summer to experience the beauty of the hill stations and to enjoy the salubrious climate. We usually get a lot of questions from our readers about Darjeeling to Gangtok trip. So in this blog, we decided to write an article on Darjeeling and Gangtok itinerary .

This post will help you in planning a trip to both Darjeeling and Gangtok. You can also go through the other resources in our blog about Sikkim and Darjeeling to get a clear idea about these places.

Siliguri to Darjeeling

Where are Darjeeling and Gangtok Located?

Darjeeling is located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal at an altitude of 6710 feet. Also known as the Queen of Hills, the breathtaking beauty of Darjeeling is magnified by the towering Kanchenjunga ranges and the lush green tea gardens surrounding it. Darjeeling had served as British settlement before Indian independence and the mark of colonial architecture can still be found in this picturesque hill station.

Gangtok is the capital of one of the most pleasant states of India, Sikkim . Located at an altitude of 5410 feet this hill station in East Sikkim is spread over a forested mountain that faces the snow-clad Himalayan peaks. There are several vantage points from where you can get the majestic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. Sikkim is one of the states where smoking in public is prohibited and Gangtok adheres to this rule strictly.

Both Gangtok and Darjeeling has a plethora of attractions and activities to entice their visitors. Though similar, both these hilly towns have their distinct charm and beauty. Gangtok is the main town of Sikkim from where you can visit the other tourist destinations in Sikkim.

Darjeeling to Gangtok – Where should I visit first?

This is one of the most important as well as a confusing question that comes while planning a Darjeeling to Gangtok trip. Both the hill stations lie in different states. So shall I visit Darjeeling first or Gangtok? The time taken from Darjeeling to Gangtok and vice versa is about 4 hours by car (not shared ones) . It takes 3 hours to reach Darjeeling from Bagdogra/NJP by car under normal traffic conditions and about 4.5 hours to reach Gangtok. While you can practically visit any of the two at first, visiting Gangtok (Sikkim) has a few distinct advantages.

This question comes only if you are arriving and leaving from Bagdogra or NJP. If you are directly flying in or out of Pakyong Airport in Sikkim, then you have to plan accordingly.

The distance between Gangtok to Bagdogra is 126 km and that from Gangtok to Siliguri is 122 km . From NJP/Bagdogra, you have to take the National Highway NH10. There is no other route towards Gangtok. Usually, the route faces a lot of traffic jam in several places like Matigara, Darjeeling More, Kalijhora and Ranipool. So if you are returning from Gangtok to NJP/Bagdogra, you have to start quite early in order to not miss your train or flight. There have been instances where trains have been missed because of the traffic jam faced just before entering Siliguri town area and in Siliguri itself.

We had been once stuck in one such traffic jam while returning from Gangtok. Thankfully we had started early. Even then, we had to leave our car and hop on to a rickshaw that took us through the lanes and narrow alleys to NJP Railway Station.

Darjeeling, on the other hand, is nearer to NJP and Bagdogra and you have to take another route. Infact there are three routes from Darjeeling to the NJP and Bagdogra. So you can have a little more time in your hand if you are coming down from Darjeeling on your return.

If you decide to return from Gangtok, then we advise you to keep sufficient time in hand for the journey.

Secondly, there are some vehicle restrictions in Sikkim. West Bengal registered vehicles are not permitted beyond the Deorali Taxi Stand. Deorali is located about 2 km from Gangtok city and you have to take another local taxi to get to your hotel or hostel. You might think that you can walk this distance. But an uphill walk with your luggage will not be a good idea. However, there are no such restrictions in Darjeeling and any vehicle from Sikkim can enter the town.

If you are planning to rent a car for the entire trip, then ask your rental company about the vehicle restriction in Sikkim.

This is awesome. So much in-depth and insightful info

Thank you so much!

Love how you have put this down. Very insightful.

We, a couple are planning a tour of 3 nights darjeeling and 4 nights gangtok and 2 nights in Pelling.

The travel agents taxi offere seem to be very high for this whole tour.

Can we take point to point taxis when there and will they be reliable and cheaper?

Yes, you can take point-to-point cabs. For sightsseing, like Gangtok and Pelling sighteeings, it is better to book a cab. Changing cabs for that will be a bit of hassle. But for travelling from one point to another (like Gangtok to Pelling etc), you can take separate cabs. Hope this helps! Have a wonderful trip and let us know how it went!

Thank you so much for these details you guys, an insightful one this is.:)

I am planning a solo travel and thinking to spend time only at Gangtok, would you be able to share the number of days ideal to spend in Gangtok?

3 days in Gangtok will be enough to cover all the attractions.

Nice itinerary and Very well explained. I was earlier confused spending all 5 days in Gangtok or do Gangtok+Darjeeling but latter seemsto be a better idea. We plan to go sometime around Holi (18th) in March. Is that a good time to visit? Will it be cold around that time?

Yes, March will be a bit cold.

Suggest some good hotels in Lachen and Lachung

Hey! Have you been to lingsey?

No we haven’t!

Wonderfully explained… very clear & in dot….

I am planning to visit Darjeeling + Gangtok 6N/5D in June, 2021 – with spouse & 2 kids. Local travel looks to be a costly affair there. What is your opinion about using shared vehicles for site-seeing; mainly from safety & comfort point of view.

Thank you Nitin! You can use local vehicles for travelling from one place to another (like Gangtok to Pelling etc etc). However, for sightseeing, you have to book a car. Also, some places like North Sikkim, Silk route and Chhangu Lake/Ntahula Pass cannot be done in shared cars. You can PM us in Instagram or Facebook if you need any other help. Thanks again.

Quite an interesting itinerary you have here. The last time i was in the area, i decided to head to Kalimpong for 2 days from Bagdogra, before my Bhutan Trip last year. Should’ve gone to Darjeeling instead. But then again, would have been disappointed as I would have had to head back soon. Definitely going to be planning a trip exclusively around this itinerary, once travel resumes.

Thanks Arnav. There is always a next time and whenever you come to visit Darjeeling, we will tag along!

Sikkim Darjeeling Tour

Shraddha Tulsankar Shilbad

Mumbai, Maharashtra

We availed services from NatureWings for our Sikkim Darjeeling Tour last month December 12, 2019. We had a great time and our itinerary was smoothly and efficiently managed without any hiccups. Special mention for Indrajit and Arpan who catered to our grievances immediately. The hotels were good and booked in some of the top localities across Sikkim and Darjeeling with good accessibility and all the transport facilities and vehicles were excellent. We would specially like to mention our driver in Darjeeling Mr. Pritam for his outstanding service and punctuality. Overall we found the package to be a little expensive since we had to pay separately for Nathula and zero point (total of Rs 6500 for both since it was subject to availability of vehicle permit) and an additional Rs 1200 for a halt at Buddha Park in Ravangla. I would like to give a minor suggestion to the team to include major tourist points that fall on the way for eg. in our case Chardham at Namchi and Buddha Park at Ravangla fell on our way to Pelling from Gangtok.

Gangtok Pelling Ravangla Package Tour

I booked Gangtok and Pelling Ravangla Package Tour with NatureWings Holidays Pvt Ltd. I think we need to go with tour planners is due to the permits, vehicle permits can be done smoothely. Arranging all these will be hectic, and our decision was perfect. The hotel they provided was decent with good food and amenities. The driver was very friendly and really helpful all throughout with skilled driving experience. The trip was beautiful and comfortable. We're very thankful to Mr. Arpan for arranging such a wonderful trip. I would make another trip to Sikkim for sure and with Naturewings only.

"We have recently traveled to Sikkim via Majestic Sikkim Package offered by NatureWings. First thing, NatureWings is not like other business oriented tour operator. They have capacity to understand what you are looking for & make best out of it. They have lot to offer while planning your trip and more than that, They will share their quality time with u to make sure you get everything you need, like finding hotel in Gangtok/Darjeeling and inform you on what placers you can visit while you are going out for sight seeing. They have arranged transport for specifically for our Family. The driver was not just guy with you but he actually becomes one of your buddies and join with you. Saikat Dey from Nature Wings is constantly in touch with our right from start of our trip until the end and ensured that we received best out of this trip. He used to follow up daily during our trip to ensure the services we received were up to the mark. I give Saikat Dey and Nature wings 5/5 for the amazing service they offered and will be looking forward for one more amazing trip."

Darjeeling & Kalimpong with Gangtok Tour

itenary

North East when combined with Darjeeling can be assumed to deliver an outstanding travel experience. Our Darjeeling-Kalimpong-Gangtok Tour is specially formulated for those who seek nature, adventure and history all in one tour in India. This 5N/6D tour allows you to open the treasure trove of North East and get a good look at the finest gems like Kalimpong and Gangtok tucked neatly in the lap of the beautiful state of Sikkim.

Beginning at West Bengal’s favourite hill station, Darjeeling, the tour starts to get exciting as soon as this hill station begins unfolding one attraction at a time. Flagging off the journey with witnessing one of the most beautiful sunrises at Tiger Hill, the tour beckons more incredible things to experience in the coming days. At Darjeeling, we shall include attractions like the Tea Gardens, which certainly are the identifier of this hill town; Batasia Loop; Ghoom Monastery; Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, PNZ Zoological Park; Tenzing Rock and Tibetan Refuge Centre. You shall also get the chance to enjoy the scrumptuous delicacies that are a blend of East and North East food.

Mesmerized enough by Darjeeling, you will head out to where Kalimpong waits for you to cast another magic spell. Kalimpong has everything that can define beauty and adventure and thus your chances of falling in love with it are way more than you think. The tour here will include a visit to Durpin Hill, famous Zong Dog Palri Fo- Brang Monastery belonging to the same Buddhist sect that of Dalai Lama; Jelapla View Point, Pine View Point, Kalim Temple, Dr Graham's Homes Complex,Delo Hill, which is the highest point in Kalimpong, Mangal Dham Temple and Kalimpong Arts & Crafts Centre. This tour in Kalimpong will be an endeavour to cover all the major aspects that define the hill station in the best way.

Take a deep breath of clean air and marvel at the natural beauty that you would encounter when reaching from Kalimpong to Gangtok. The state capital has so much to offer that by the end of the tour you would be so attached to the destination. Boasting thick forests, torrent rivers and peaceful lakes and monasteries, Gangtok is an ideal way to conclude the already perfect tour. Our endeavour would be to include all the attractions of Gangtok that reflect the city. We will also ensure that the neighbouring locales like Tsongmo Lake and Nathu Pass are also in the itinerary as they make important parts of attractions in Gangtok. Where the lake is home to Brahminy Ducks and shelter to migratory birds, the Pass is the border between India and China. Visitors will also get the chance to seek the blessings at Baba Mandir before completion of a memorable tour.
