Venture to one of these countryside, coastal or mountainous locations only a couple of hours away from Sydney

Sydneysiders are a lucky bunch. Jump in the car (or the train) and within just a few hours you can find yourself in some of the most beautiful spots in the state.

But with so many options to choose from, it begs the question: where should you visit first? You're certainly spoilt for choice, so we've cherry-picked a selection of the best day trips from the city – featuring quaint villages, seaside hangouts and mountain escapes.

Around a two-hour drive or a scenic train ride away from the CBD, you'll find yourself rambling through eucalypts and gums, gazing out over gorgeous ocean cliffs, or watching the world go by in a sleepy village café. All these places have two things in common: they're close enough to get you there and back within a day, and they're well worth your time.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

You’ll discover deep-rooted history and picturesque landscapes at Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, 50 minutes north of Sydney by car. Feast your eyes on views of Pittwater to the Central Coast from the sandstone viewing area at West Head Lookout. Take a short walk through the bush to find important Indigenous sites on the Aboriginal Heritage walk , which includes viewings of historic rock engravings and handprints made by the Guringai people. The park includes many waterways including Hawkesbury River, Pittwater and Cowan Water, plus numerous creeks and coves to explore. Want to see more? Hire a paddle boat from the Bobbin Inn.

How far? 43km

Get there by car. It’s about 50 minutes’ drive from Sydney CBD.

• Royal National Park

The Royal National Park has endless possibilities for sightseers and explorers eager to connect with nature. Trek the expansive coastal cliffs and walk through eucalyptus bushlands, swim under the waterfalls in Wattamolla, or paddle down Hacking River by hiring a canoe from the Audley Boatshed. You can even catch a glimpse of whales migrating north for the winter from May to November. Cyclists can brave the 10km Loftus Loop Trail and unroll a picnic blanket for lunch at Ironbark Flat or Wattle Forest afterwards.

How far? 36km

Get there by car. It’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or take the train from Central to Otford, which takes just over an hour and costs $7.65 with an Opal card.

Blue Mountains

Take a train to the Blue Mountains and make a day of visiting gobsmacking lookouts like Echo Point and wandering along tracks that boast rich Indigenous history. Trek the scenic loop of the Grand Canyon track near Blackheath to see world heritage listed waterfalls, sandstone walls and native plants. Or soak in the vibrant shades of flora in the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah . Take a peek into the Glow Worm Tunnel in Lithgow where the bioluminescent glow of fungus gnats covers the walls and ceilings. Or relax in at one of the finest day spas in the Blue Mountains  for massages, facials, soak therapies and body wraps.

How far? 79km

Get there by car, it’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or catch the Blue Mountains line train from Central to Katoomba, then the bus from Katoomba to Echo Point for the lookout. It costs around $10 with an Opal Card.

Dedicate a few solid hours to simply wandering around this adorable seaside village, stopping in at cute cafés and the famous Ice Creamery, Kiama (aaaaaaah). A trip here wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Kiama Blowhole , where waves spurt out through a  crevasse  in the cliff, forming a fabulous salty fountain. Play golf at the rural golf course or walk the Kiama Coast Walk for views of lush green cliffs overlooking rocky shores, rivers and private beaches. There are also plenty of surrounding coastal towns connected by cycleways for fitness fanatics to conquer. You can also book magestic activities like dolphin watching cruises, outdoor rock climbing and kayaking tours.

Get there by car, it’s about two hours away from Sydney CBD.

• Things to do

Home to panoramic coastal views, sunny weather and an infamous surf, Palm Beach is the ideal Australian package. Located one hour away from Sydney’s CBD on the Northern Beaches, this hot spot is perfect for a relaxing day trip away from the commotion of the city. Cruise the crystal waters on a boat charter, tee off at the Palm Beach Golf Course, or grab a bite at the Boathouse for lunch after embarking on a Pittwater kayaking tour . The Barrenjoey Lighthouse delivers a bird’s-eye-view of the sandy dunes, 91 metres above sea level. And if you're a die-hard Home and Away fan, you can pretend you're a Summer Bay local, as much of the show's filming was done at Plam Beach and the surf lifesaving club.

Get there by car. It’s about one hour away from Sydney CBD. Or catch the L90 bus from Wynyard Station for around $5 with an Opal card.

Kangaroo Valley

If you’re looking to escape to the countryside, Kangaroo Valley, located two hours south of Sydney, has got you covered. Go wine tasting at the Yarrawa Estate Winery, where you can sample locally made jams. Entertain the kids by kayaking down Kangaroo River or go horse riding through rainforest and grazing lands . You can admire the Victorian architecture of the Hampden Bridge or the bushland views from Mannings lookout, too. For the DIYers there are also plenty of  hands-on classes in gourmet cooking, gardening, soap-making and the art of high tea.

Get there by car. It’s about two hours and ten minutes away from Sydney CBD.

Port Stephens

Despite being a two hour drive from Sydney CBD, Port Stephens offers adventure and scenic views that make it worth the time at the wheel. Embark on a camel ride at Oakfield Ranch or dive in for a snorkel with dolphins. Sandboard the largest dunes of Stockton Beach during the day, or do it by sunset for a more romantic picnic setting. For adventurers, the outdoor rock climbing at Port Stephens’ sea cliffs will have you reaching unimaginable heights overlooking the ocean slapping the rocky shore, or you can opt to stretch your legs on the newly completed Tomaree Coastal Walk that is a whole 27 kilometres of stunning views.

How far? 179km

Get there by car, it’s about two hours and 30 minutes away from Sydney CBD.

The Entrance

Less than two hours north of Sydney, you’ll find one of the most charming corners of the Central Coast. Famed for its community of hungry pelicans – there’s a public feeding of the local ‘scoop’ (that’s the collective noun) every day at 3.30pm, which can attract up to 50 hungry birds –  this coastal town sits astride the natural ocean channel that separates the sapphire waters of Tuggerah Lake from the Pacific. A day out here is perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors but want to keep one foot planted in civilisation – the town has plenty of caf é s and restaurants you can retreat to when you need a feed or a coffee. There are many super spots for fishing and prawning and multiple places in town where you can hire the necessary equipment if you’re not already kitted out. If you’re a keen cyclist, the 12-km shared trail along the lake will have you spoilt for beautiful views and just north of the Entrance, there are a number of easily manageable bushwalking tracks through Wyrrabalong National Park. During the sunnier months, head to Tuggerah Beach, which boasts more than 8km of golden sands lapped by ocean waves, and if you’re not put off by chillier waters, surf conditions are excellent here all year round.

Get there by car. It’s about 1.5 hours from Sydney CBD.

This quaint spot is the South Coast getaway for people who live on the South Coast, and being locally adored is always a good sign. It’s basically a two-for-one holiday: the salty sea breeze floating up from Seven Mile Beach to the sprawling green hills makes you feel like you’re in a small country town and a forgotten seaside village in the same breath. There’s incredible baked goods to be found at  Milkwood Bakery and you’ll find unusual bottles of plonk at the almost-too-cool Justin Lill Wines & the Berry Bottleshop . If fancier eats are in order, Queen St Eatery is an elegant little restaurant on Berry’s main drag executing the classics with style. A generous plate of prawns grilled in their shells carry a whisper of aniseed from the Pernod flambe, and the herbal spiciness of a proper Café de Paris butter on a minute steak is balanced by a crunchy nest of wafer-thin fries. If you’re ready to burn some energy, the three-hour return hike to the stunning plateau of the Drawing Room Rocks is always a winner. Looking to stay the night? Plan a long simmer in a balcony bath with sightlines out to the ocean at the stunning Mount Hay Retreat . 

How far? 138km

Get there by car on a two-hour drive that’ll take you past some gorgeous ocean cliffs – stop off at the Kiama Blowhole on the way, or take your pick of other South Coast adventures . 

Step into another time by visiting the historic village of Berrima, established in the 1830s. Widely recognised as the preserved example of a Georgian village on the Australian mainland, Berrima is surrounded by wineries, charming centuries-old architecture, and fancy boutiques. Buy handmade country produce at Mrs Oldbucks Pantry and warm winter knits from the Australian Alpaca Centre. Stop by Eschalot for lunch for a hatted fine-dining experience at a heritage-listed building. Walk by the Berrima River for a platypus sighting, or book yourself a ghost tour at the local courthouse.

How far? 125km

Get there by car. It’s just under two hours away from Sydney CBD.

Lake Macquarie

While you may only know Lake Macquarie for its expansive body of water, this unassuming region sandwiched between Sydney and Newcastle has a lot to offer city folk looking to slow down and get back to nature. If you want to go there and back again in a day, Bilbo Baggins-style, then we must recommend a trail  ride with  AAA Horse Riding & More . You'll be trotting and cantering under palm tree canopies, along lush fern pathways and through skinny gums stretching skyward at the foothills of  the Watagan Mountains. Afterwards, become a salty skipper while you cruise around the region's namesake lake on a private runabout boat with  Jetbuzz Watersports .

How far? 127km 

Get there by car in just under two hours, driving through the bushlands of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

Stanwell Park

Situated on the northern tip of Wollongong, Stanwell Park is where Australian aeronautical pioneer Lawrence Hargrave first flew in his box kite in 1894. Since then, Bald Hill lookout has been the spot for hang gliding and paragliding, as well as a good place to enjoy an alfresco lunch. You can also hike the 6.5km walking track of Wodi Wodi or hand feed kangaroos at Symbio Wildlife Park . If all else fails, slap on some sunscreen and head to the beach for a splash.

How far? 64km

Get there by car. It’s about one hour, 15 minutes from Sydney CBD. Or take the train from Central to Otford, which takes around one hour and costs about $6 with an Opal card. The walk from Otford Station to Stanwell Tops takes 22 minutes.

Mermaid Pools

• Southern Highlands

Trek through the bush, swim in rivers and chase waterfalls around Mermaid Pools near Tahmoor Gorge. You’ll encounter steep steps and rocky platforms as you venture to the water, but the views are well worth it. While the Mermaid Pools themselves are not the safest to swim in, the many swimming holes you’ll encounter on the trek are ideal for a splash. The See Through Pools are the perfect pit-stop for a swim, allowing you to view hidden rock formations underwater.

How far? 100km

Get there by car, it’s about 1.5 hours from Sydney CBD.

The best day trips from Sydney

Drive a few hours out of Sydney to find fresh produce, world-class wines and beautiful beaches and coastline.

Take a break for the day and head out of  Sydney . You can take a beach break along the South Coast and learn to surf, you can walk in the footsteps of the first Aboriginals at the Royal National Park or you can taste wine at one of the oldest wine regions in the country.

Did you know?

Palm Beach is the setting for Summer Bay, the fictional beach in the television show Home and Away .

Where: Just over an hour drive from the city centre.

At the apex of Sydney's stunning Northern Beaches is  Palm Beach , which sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded by golden sand and sparkling water. Take a coffee stop on the way up at  The Boathouse , a wooden cottage right on the water where you can try the buttermilk scones with fresh strawberries with your caffeine hit. Once at “Palmy”, as the locals know it, take a swim at the beach or climb to Barrenjoey Lighthouse. The Barrenjoey Head Aquatic Reserve walk to the lighthouse starts with a stroll along a small patch of beach, where jet skis create swirls of whitewash in Pittwater. When the track curls inland you can choose to go straight ahead on the Service Road or take the steeper, shorter Smugglers Track. Halfway up you get an amazing view back along the twin crescents of Palm Beach and Pittwater that bracket the lush headland.

Royal National Park

Where: A one-hour drive south of the city centre.

The  Royal National Park  offers 15 hectares (37 acres) of thick bush, clifftop walks and hidden swimming spots. Walk the beginning section of the 26-kilometre (16-mile) Coast Track, where the traditional owners – the Dharawal people – used to gather on rocks and create art. Nearby you can see engravings that are more than 1000 years old, find shell middens and discover Depression-era cave dwellings where hard-up locals used to live. In whale watching season (May to November) the cliffs are a great places from which to spot humpback whales as they head along the coast. You can finish off with a dip at Garie Beach.

Where: Just under a two-hour drive west of the city.

The  Blue Mountains  offer forest walks through ancient trees and ferns, the famous Three Sisters rock formations at  Echo Point Lookout , and fabulous food. Stop in Medlow Bath for a high tea at the opulent  Hydro Majestic Hotel , which underwent a massive makeover in 2015 and now offers excellent tea and cakes in its Art Deco surrounds. Have lunch at historic  Lochiel House , a fine diner in a historic coach house where you can lunch on steak tartare or grilled octopus. On the way back to Sydney, take the back road, the Bells Line of Road, and call in at  Bilpin Cider Co , where you can sample the local brew made from fruit grown in the surrounding valley.

Southern Highlands

The Southern Highlands is also home to a number of  wineries  where you can enjoy a flight of cool-climate wines or a long lunch overlooking the vineyards.

Where: A one-hour drive south-west of the city.

The New South Wales Southern Highlands is a region of rural townships set among rolling hills and state forest. At Bowral visit the  Bradman Centre , a cricket museum in honour of Australia's most famous player, Sir Donald Bradman. Shop for antiques at  Dirty Janes , a vintage market, or grab a bite at the  Mill Café  in a huge old building with a giant cockatoo mural on the wall. Dine on delicious modern Thai food at Paste in Mittagong, or head to Berrima, to browse the shops and enjoy a drink at the historic sandstone  Surveyor General Inn , built in 1834. 

The South Coast

Where:  Just over an hour south of Sydney when you pass the Royal National Park.

Take the  Grand Pacific Drive , which heads out over the water on the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge then on to the seaside towns of Wollongong and Kiama. Wollongong and surrounds are full of beaches, small coastal towns and coastal walks and cycleways. At Kiama visit the famous Kiama Blowhole, where the crashing waves are forced up through a hole in the cliff, forming a huge fountain. Play golf at the rural golf course with great views and kangaroos for company, or walk parts of the Kiama Coast Walk , which weaves through stunning headland, rivers and secluded beaches.

The Hunter Valley

Where:  About a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney.

The  Hunter Valley , one of Australia's premier wine regions, offers a range of adventurous ways to explore the region, from an early morning hot air balloon to  horseriding  through the vineyards. But most people come for the food and wine. Have lunch at  Muse  in Pokolbin, considered the best restaurant in the valley, or try nearby  Restaurant Botanica , that has its own kitchen garden. Taste wine at  Tyrrell's , a winery that dates back to 1858, try the more modern  Tempus Two  with its striking cellar door, or sip local bubbles at  Peterson House .

Shoalhaven Region

Where: About 2.5 hours south of Sydney.

The  Shoalhaven Region  has white sand beaches, an emerging foodie scene based around the area's amazing fresh produce, and quaint coastal towns. At  Berry,  a country town with heritage buildings set among lush farmland, you can get freshly baked bread at the  Berry Sourdough Bakery & Café , piping hot treats from the Berry Donut Van  and an old-school pub beer at the  Great Southern Hotel . Work off your foodie binge at Murrays Beach, where the clear blue waters are ideal for snorkelling. Spot dolphins in the water and kangaroos on the beach in Jervis Bay, or head to Mollymook to stay and dine in luxury at Bannisters .

Where: 1.5 hours south from Sydney

The beachy suburb of Wollongong can be as relaxing or adrenaline-fuelled as you like. Along the way, be sure to take a detour for the  Symbio Wildlife Park  (just off the Princes Highway) to meet the local mammal population of native and exotic wildlife. Continue along the scenic route via the Sea Cliff Bridge and stop for lunch at the  Scarborough Hotel . This casual pub has some of the best views of the sweeping coastline. Beachgoers are spoilt for choice in “The Gong” (as it’s affectionately known to locals), with picturesque soft sand beaches, great surfing waves, ocean pools and picnic areas. The most popular option is the swimmer-friendly North Beach, though City Beach in the city centre tends to get wilder waves. Book a private lesson with the  Illawarra Surf Academy  and learn how to surf with the locals at Thirroul and Corrimal (just north of Wollongong). With more than 40 kilometres (25 miles) of shared paths threaded across the Wollongong coast, cycling is on par with surfing as the local pastime. Rent a set of wheels from  South Coast Bike Hire  and hit the waterfront cycleway, or for the thrill-seekers,  Skydive Sydney-Wollongong  will take you on a scenic plane ride over the coast before you make the crucial jump from 14,000 feet up. Largely considered one of the most spectacular skydives in Australia, you’ll get to take in the dramatic views over Wollongong before landing on North Beach.

One Day in Sydney: Easy Itineraries for Your First Visit

So you only have one day in Sydney. Well, you’re in luck, we have put together a great itinerary for first-time visitors that shows off all the cities best highlights in just 24 hours. There are two versions to this day, one with a leisurely lunch and one that has you on your feet for a whole day! Got less than 24 hours? This one day Sydney tour works well even with a 12-hour window.

1 Day in Sydney itinerary with step by step instructions

Step 1. getting to know circular quay, step 2. explore the royal botanic gardens, step 3. sydney opera house, step 4. take a ride on a sydney ferry, step 5. enjoy lunch by the sea, step 6. explore one of sydney’s famous beaches, step 7. make your way back into the city, step 8. explore the rocks, step 9. check out a sydney sunset, step 10. try the local cuisine, how much will this cost.

I think it’s better to have some options than letting someone dictate your whole day. Throughout the day we have given you choices, kind of like a choose your own adventure style day. If this seems too hard just select option one all the way along 😉

My best piece of advice is to be wary of itineraries that seem to let you do too much. I saw one created by AI that included the Bondi to Coogee walk, Taronga Zoo, The Ground of Alexandria, the Art Gallery of NSW and Newtown all before dinner and using public transport.

Believe me, this is not possible to do unless you run the entire time and experience nothing much when you get to each spot!

We will begin our exploration from Circular Quay. This is the must-see spot in the city where you can catch your first glimpse of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. If you are not sure how to get here from your starting point, whether that is Sydney Airport or a hotel downtown enter your location into this trip planner and you will be sorted in no time. Google maps also list Sydney public transport instructions between any two destinations.

If you are coming from the airport, you are in for a treat. Don’t miss the panoramic views from platform two at Circular Quay Station one of the best public transport views in the world!

Before you move too far from Circular Quay Station, you might like to pop into Customs house (open from 8am weekdays) and check out the scale model of the city. They also have plenty of free maps and guides at the information desk.

Ok so now I want you to head back towards the water and wharf 2. Look to the right for a glass elevator at the eastern end of Circular Quay attached to the expressway above the train station.

Take the elevator up onto the roadway where there is a lookout point with a lovely view over the quay – a favourite spot to capture a Sydney Harbour photo.

When you are done, don’t go back down the elevator but continue past it to the steps that lead down to Macquarie Street – we will enter the Botanic Gardens from here.

If jet lag has made sleeping hard you will be happy to hear you can begin your sightseeing as early as 7am!

The gates to the garden open nice and early so why not start the day like a local with a brisk walk in the Botanic Gardens?

If you have slept a little late or have booked an Opera House tour, don’t worry, you can either head straight to the Opera House and do this section in reverse.

After leaving the Cahill Walkway in the previous step, you will enter the garden via the gate on Macquarie Street. Make your way to the Boy with a Thorn statue marked on the map at the bottom of the page to get this view.

From here head to the end of the garden and Mrs Macquarie’s Point for the classic postcard view of Sydney. When you have snapped the perfect shot for Instagram, follow the waterfront path back around to the Opera House.

You can either do a self-guided walk or join one of the free volunteer guided walks (10.30am) or paid specialist walks of the Gardens. Whichever you choose, you will not be disappointed. This garden offers fantastic views and plenty of impressive plants and sculptures. The gift shop is also one of the best in the city.

It’s time to get up close and personal with the Sydney Opera House and explore the details of the building, touch the tiles, wander into the public areas to get a feel for the interior and walk right around the base. 

IYou can pre-book an Opera House tour (allow 1.30 mins) to be sure of not missing out. If you need of a pick me up , grab a flat white or espresso from Opera Bar. We have written a handy guide to choosing the best Opera House tour .

If you have not already walked around the Gardens, you can head in at this point and take the high path to the right of the entry. This path will take you past one of my favourite sculptures, Mrs Macquarie’s Folly and continues around to the central freshwater pond, the Oriental Garden and proceed to the Mare and Foal Lawn area. From this point, you can take in one of the best views in the garden.

How much time to allow?

• Walk around the outside of the Opera House – 30 mins
• Take an official tour -1hr 30 mins – prebook to avoid waiting around.
• Visit the Botanic Gardens 30 mins-2 hr depending on your interest and which tour you choose.

Time: 1-2 hrs 

We believe every visitor to Sydney should spend some time out on the harbour. One of the best ways to do this is by riding one of the many Sydney Harbour Ferry routes . If you fancy something a little more intimate or unique, you can look at some of the various Sydney Harbour cruises . Some include lunch, which can be a lovely way to pass a few hours on the water.

Option 1. Watsons Bay

Walk back to the ferry terminal and take the F3 Cross Harbour ferry to Watsons Bay. The journey takes about 20 minutes and gets you nice and close to the eastern suburbs’ waterfront homes. Lovely for some daydreaming. Check the timetable before you head out for the day as the service is only half-hourly on weekends and every 20 mins in peak times on weekdays.

When you arrive at Watson’s Bay, I suggest you take this walk , but if that seems too strenuous, you could just walk up to The Gap Lookout instead.

If you are ready for some refreshments, I recommend Watson’s Bay Hotel for a coffee and cake.

Option 2. Manly

The F1 Manly ferry is the most iconic route. The trip takes 30 minutes, and when you get there is plenty to keep you busy for an hour or two with lots of restaurants and shops to explore and a couple of short walks should you fancy stretching your legs.

How much time do you need?

• The ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay takes 20 mins
• To check out the cliffs at the Gap lookout allow 30 mins
• If you fancy a longer walk, you could walk out to Hornby Lighthouse on South Head allow 2 hours
• The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly takes 30 minutes
• To walk down Manly’s Corso to Manly’s ocean beach and around to Shelly Beach takes about an hour.

Time: 1.5 – 3 hours  to explore a harbour side town

Whether you fancy a bucket of prawns, fresh oysters and some yummy indulgent fish and chips, it’s hard to beat eating by the ocean. If you are vegan or vegetarian, don’t worry, there are plenty of options for everyone at each of these spots.

Option 1: Watsons Bay

This is where the big decisions kick in. When you have finished exploring Watson’s Bay, you have three choices: you can either enjoy a leisurely lunch here and take the easy return trip to Circular Quay, ride the private ferry to Manly or you can continue and visit Bondi Beach via bus. 

I will give you a few minutes to decide 😉

If you have decided on lunch, you have a few options. Watsons Bay Hotel, the upmarket Doyles at Watsons Bay, one of the city’s oldest restaurants or Doyles Fish and Chip bar on the wharf, which is perfect for a more budget style picnic lunch.

If you have decided to make your way to make your way to the bus stop on Military Road and jump on the 380 bus to Bondi (pronounced bond-eye). You will pass by lots of million-dollar homes and some great views towards the city from the right-hand side of the bus.

Option 2: Manly

If you are on a tight budget, Manly is probably your best bet with a lot more variety than Watsons Bay. There is a supermarket minutes from Manly wharf, where you can pick up some bargain picnic items and enjoy to lunch with a view at either the harbour or ocean beach.

Alternatively, there are dozens of restaurants, including the perfectly located “Pantry” right on the beachfront at the end of the Corso.

Option 3: Bondi

Bondi has too many food options to list; however, for some real Aussie culture, you could head to North Bondi RSL and grab a meal on the deck overlooking the beach.

If you prefer something a bit more upmarket, check out the Icebergs  Dining room where you can dine with the rich (and sometimes famous). Icebergs also have a less expensive cafe option too. 

Time: Allow 1 hour for lunch

With dozens of harbour beaches and surf beaches less than 30 minutes from the centre of the city, you should try to add one of these to your list.

Option 1. Bondi Beach

When you have finished eating, walk down to the beach and check out the graffiti wall which hosts some fabulous large scale murals. It’s now time to take on the Bondi Coastal Walk. The full walk is 6km long and ends at Coogee Beach, however you can stop at Bronte or Clovelly and join a bus service there back to Bondi Junction.

How long do you need?

• The bus from Watson’s Bay to Bondi will take approximately 12 minutes ( timetable here )
• Allow 30 minutes minimum to check out Bondi Beach.
• Allow 2 hours to complete the Bondi to Coogee walk or one hour to do the path to Bronte Beach.

Option 2. Shelly Beach at Manly

Shelly Beach is a short walk around from Manly Beach and the walkway between the two is a lovely easy flat stroll. Shelly Beach is quite protected, so perfect on windy days.

In between the two is the Manly Aquatic reserve, a great place for a swim or snorkel. There are often volunteers in attendance to help you learn about the creatures you can spot here.

If you get thirsty on the way, stop in at the Bower Cafe for a coffee or drink with a view.

• The walk from The Corso at Manly to Shelly Beach is 1.8km and takes about 20 -30minutes

Bus, train or ferry your way back to town. Buses leave from Bronte and Clovelly back to Bondi Junction and the CityRail trains to the city. It’s just a short 10 minute ride back into town.

Depending on the time of day, you could head over to explore a little of the Sydney Historic disctrict, The Rocks.

You can just stroll George Street and the laneways or:

• Follow our self-guided walk
• visit some of the dozen or so historic pubs and try some Aussie beer/s
• Join in the free 90 minute Sydney walking tour at 6pm

There are a few great spots to watch the Sydney sunset. Opera Bar is one favourite, Barangaroo also offers a wonderful sunset view. You could choose one of these bars with a view or just sit on the waterfront at Barangaroo Reserve or Kirribilli, or even head over to Mrs Macquaries Point, a favourite of professional photographers.

If you find yourself near the Opera House, don’t miss the Badu Gili light projections on the eastern side of the sails at sunset, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm.

If you only have one night in Sydney, you might want dinner with a view . There are lots of high-end choices like Aria, Bennelong, Quay, Cafe Sydney and Altitude. These restaurants are all located around Circular Quay and offer amazing views of Sydney. Alternatively, you could visit one of our celebrity chef restaurants or head down to Barangaroo, where you will find some really popular restaurants at a range of prices.

Darling Harbour is a great option if you feel like something more casual – there are a bunch of relaxed dining choices at Darling Square and plenty of family dining in the Darling Square area by the playground.

If you are dining on a budget, then it’s hard to beat Chinatown where you can dine in one of the food courts.

If you love Sydney harbour as much as I do, you might want to have dinner on the water. We have listed a few dinner cruise options here, in my opinion, the Captain Cook dinner Cruises offers the best food. The Tall ship dinner cruises offer a unique experience, and I would choose between one of these two.

Sydney’s transport system now works with contactless payments via your credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If it’s a weekend, your total cost will be $8.60, and on other days there is a daily cap of $16.10 – if you have come from the Airport stations, the airport gate fee is not included in this cap.

Sydney gets a drenching as heavy rain, severe weather forecast for NSW today and tomorrow

It has been a wet and wild day across New South Wales with more extreme weather expected over the weekend.

In Sydney more than 160 millimetres of rain has fallen since 9am on Thursday, its heaviest in 4 years.

More than 45 flood alerts remain active across New South Wales on Friday night after intense rainfall saturated the state with the worst to come overnight.

Sydney cops heaviest rainfall in 4 years

Here's a few facts and figures from our weather boffin Tom Saunders:

• Sydney has already received its heaviest rain total in 4 years with more than 160mm since 9am yesterday (highest 48-hour total)
• The heaviest rain today has been on the Mid North Coast. Taree with more than 100mm since 9am
• A deluge will arrive overnight across parts of Sydney and the Illawarra, Blue Mountains and Hunter leading to severe flash flooding and rapid river rises, including up to 220mm in 6 hours on the Illawarra Escarpment
• The torrential falls are part of a broader rain event which is soaking eastern Australia, and has triggered flood watches and warnings from southern Queensland to the NSW South Coast
• More than 40 flood watches are current for NSW
• The band of torrential rain is moving south and will clear from Sydney by about 8am, clear the Illawarra by late morning and clear from the South Coast by the evening

Six injured in wet-weather crash

Reporting by Adriane Reardon from the ABC South East NSW newsroom.

Six people, including two children, have been taken to hospital with injuries following a crash in wet weather south of Mudgee in the NSW central west.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle crash on the Castlereagh Highway, about 2pm today, where a ute and four-wheel drive had collided.

The male passenger in the ute, believed to be in his 60s, was flown to hospital with serious injuries, while the male driver, 55 was taken to Mudgee Hospital.

The driver of the four-wheel drive, a 34-year-old man, was also flown to hospital with serious injuries, while his 32-year-old female passenger was flown to hospital with critical injuries.

Two children in the back-seat, aged two and six, sustained minor injuries and taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for observation.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.

Storm damage to create 'significant work' for SES

NSW SES chief superintendent Dallas Burnes has this afternoon given an update on ABC News 24.

Mr Burnes said storm damage was going to "create more significant work for us".

He said the majority of call-outs had been for leaking roofs and fallen trees and there had been about half a dozen rescues.

Mr Burnes urged people to stay indoors tonight.

"If it's at nighttime and the road is flooded? Do not cross that roadway. You do not know what is under it. "The flood rescues we've undertaken today, the majority related to cars entering floodwater. That puts our volunteers' lives at risk."

Rain and thunderstorms continue in southern Queensland

A south-west Queensland town has shut its flood levee ahead of major flooding, as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts heavy falls for the south-east of the state into the weekend.

Senior forecaster Laura Boekel said rain and thunderstorms would continue today and tomorrow, with possible falls of up to 100 millimetres.

"It's very important to note that in some parts of the south and south-east, we're seeing moisture of the soil and the catchments quite high, so that means catchments, rivers, creeks can respond quite rapidly," she said.

"We could see responses from moderate rainfall this weekend."

BOM issues flood warning for Hawkesbury and Nepean rivers

The people at the Bureau of Meteorology have certainly had a busy day. They've just released another weather update.

• Major flooding possible at Menangle and North Richmond from Saturday morning
• Moderate flooding possible at Windsor and Putty Road from overnight Friday
• Minor flooding likely at Camden Weir, Wallacia Weir, Penrith, Sackville and possible at Lower Portland from Friday evening

Rainfall totals of up to 150mm have been observed in the Hawkesbury Nepean catchment since 9am on Thursday.

Further heavy rainfall is forecast through the catchment for the remainder of Friday and into Saturday.

Minor flooding is likely along the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo Rivers from overnight Friday. With the forecast rainfall, further river level rises and moderate to major flooding is possible from Saturday morning along the Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers.

Transport update for commuters

This is the latest from the Transport Management Centre.

Motorists and public transport passengers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra travel time due to severe weather in Sydney and surrounding areas.

• Wakehurst Parkway is closed in both directions due to flooding between North Narrabeen and Oxford Falls.
• Oxford Falls Road is closed in both directions due to flooding between Wakehurst Parkway and Aroona Road.
• Other roads where motorists are advised to take extra care due to water on the road include: The Pacific Highway at Pymble, Centenary Drive at Strathfield, Pittwater Road at North Manly and Euston Road at St Peters

On public transport:

• Passengers who need to travel on the Sydney Trains network are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time due to severe weather damaging equipment at Redfern, as well as slower boarding times.
• Trains are running on all lines but there are some delays and gaps in service.  
• Plan ahead and avoid travel where possible.
• Buses are supplementing trains between Campbelltown and Macarthur, and between Riverstone and Richmond.
• Passengers are advised to listen to announcements and check information displays for service updates.​
• Buses are replacing ferries between Parramatta and Rydalmere due to the weir overflowing.

Parramatta River overflowing

This is the latest from the ABC's Elinya Chenery.

Heavy rainfall has caused minor flooding in Sydney's west this afternoon.

The Parramatta River is overflowing in low lying areas after the water level raised above 2 metres in height.

Areas affected by the flooding include the Parramatta Ferry Wharf and footbridges across the river.

Authorities say further flooding is expected in the area in the coming hours.

Communities on Mid North Coast without power

Some communities along parts of the Bellingen River on the NSW Mid North Coast are completely isolated by flood water and without power.

Residents in the localities of Thora and Darkwood are affected, and NSW SES crews will be undertaking welfare checks.

"We've got some communities there that are completely isolated by floodwater," NSW SES spokesperson Andrew Edmunds said on the ABC statewide drive program.

"They may find themselves without power, water and other essential services."

Isolated residents in those communities are being urged to contact the NSW SES on 132 500 if they need assistance with supplies.

NSW SES advises people not to go outside

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is advising people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as significant rainfall impacts much of the NSW east coast.

A severe storm warning is in place for communities from Gosford in the north, to Batemans Bay in the south, across to Goulburn, with damaging winds and very heavy rain possible. Meanwhile, residents on the Bellingen River at Thora and Darkwood have been advised to prepare for isolation.

Residents in these communities may find themselves cut off by flood water and without power, water and other essential services.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said conditions were likely to worsen over the next few hours.

"There's potential for very large downpours of rain between the Blue Mountains and Narooma, which could lead to life-threatening flash flooding," Assistant Commissioner Kearns said.

The NSW SES said it had responded to more than 800 incidents in the last 24 hours.

Prepare to evacuate alert in Chipping Norton

The NSW SES has issued a prepare to evacuate and watch and act notice for people in low lying areas of eastern parts of Chipping Norton.

Those in the following area are being told to prepare to evacuate due to predicted dangerous flooding:

• All properties in the following streets in Chipping Norton:
• Newbridge Road between Riverside Road and east to Georges River
• Riverside Road between Childs Road and Newbridge Road
• Davy Robinson Drive
• Rickard Road
• Arthur Street

More than 100 flights cancelled at Sydney Airport

The wild weather has not surprisingly caused issues at Sydney Airport with more than 100 flights cancelled through domestic arrivals and departures.

A Sydney Airport spokesperson urged passengers to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.

Is public transport in Sydney affected by the weather?

• Sydney Trains and Ferries   asked commuters to take "extra care"   as surfaces can be slippery when wet
• Transport for NSW is advising to allow for extra travel time on the T1, T2, T3, T8 and T9 train lines due to weather damaging equipment at Redfern
• Transport for NSW says there are no significant delays on Sydney's bus network

Hundreds of sandbags at the ready in Gosford

Hundreds of sandbags are ready and waiting for collection at the NSW SES Gosford depot on the Central Coast in preparation for more rain to come.

Members of the community volunteered their time to help fill the bags today, along with those from the Terrigal Rugby Union Club.

Gosford has received more than 70 millimetres so far today, according to data from the Bureau of Meteorology.

BOM updates flood warning

The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its Flood Watch which now includes major flooding on:

• Myall River
• Lower Hunter River
• Upper Nepean River
• Hawkesbury and Lower Nepean River
• Georges and Woronora River
• Macquarie River to Bathurst

Major delays on state's rail networks

Transport for NSW says there are "major delays" across the Sydney Trains and NSW Trainlink networks because of the heavy rain.

Passengers are advised to avoid non-essential travel.

Buses may supplement some services.

If you do need to travel though, Transport for NSW advises you to allow plenty of extra time.

Flooding impacts Newell Highway

Flooding continues to impact the Newell Highway in the state's north, which remains closed between Boggabilla and Moree.

Motorists travelling north from Moree can take a diversion using the Carnarvon Highway and the Barwon Highway to Goondiwindi.

The southbound diversion is the same in reverse and is also suitable for all vehicles.

The alternate route between the two towns is about 2.5 hours long.

Hawkesbury SES commander says it's a 'waiting game' at the moment

Jessica Kidd from the Sydney newsroom spoke to Kevin Jones from the Hawkesbury SES just then.

He said the volunteers were busily checking equipment and making sure everything was "good to go" as the unit prepared for rain in the Hawkesbury expected tonight.

"We're really at the moment just playing a bit of a waiting game, waiting for the rain to come," he said. "It seems to have not been as bad as they were predicting up on the north coast, but as it comes further south it looks like … there's still a chance that it's going to be a bit more intense."

Mr Jones said the local community is "definitely much more aware" on this occasion after going through "so many floods", which has helped with preparations today.

Power restored to hundreds of buildings in Sydney's CBD

Ausgrid says power has been restored to hundreds of businesses and homes after "significant rainfall" caused a major power outage.

It said 1,300 customers were affected after a substation flooded on Goulburn and Pitt streets.

Power has now been restored to more than 1,250 customers after the water was pumped offsite.  

It said the "bulk" of affected customers have their lights back on, but a small number may still be out at this point in time.
