One Day Itinerary in Geelong & the Bellarine Peninsula

Geelong is a beautiful waterfront city about 65 km southwest of Melbourne . It is the second largest city in Victoria & one of the fastest growing regional cities in Australia. The ideal location of Geelong makes it a perfect getaway from Melbourne & a great stopover between Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road .

With abundant activities and attractions to visit in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, you can spend multiple days purely in Geelong to soak in its beauty. However, one day is sufficient to visit the popular attractions in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula if you are time-restricted.

In this article, I will take you through a one-day itinerary to visit Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula to explore their iconic landmarks. Suggestions on accommodations and mode of transport are also provided for your convenience.

During this 1-Day Itinerary in Geelong, we will first explore Geelong’s city centre before visiting Geelong’s picturesque coastline. Towards the end of this itinerary, we will head off to the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula for some stunning sunset views.

Eastern Beach Promenade

Where to Stay in Geelong

During my recent visit to Geelong (May 2022), I found most accommodations around Geelong were charging AUD 100+ for a standard room . This was certainly more pricey than Melbourne and the nearby towns.

After comparing various accommodation options, I ended up booking myself into a 3-bedroom cabin in Discovery Parks – Geelong . It was definitely a great decision. Although I was travelling solo, this 3-bedroom cabin was one of the more affordable options at the time (AUD 117 for 1 night). This can be even more affordable if you have travel companions to share the cost with. The place was spacious and clean, with a kitchen and basic amenities available. This is one of the places I will stay again on future visits.

Opens in a new tab.

1. Geelong Gallery

Geelong Gallery is also known as Geelong Art Gallery . It is positioned in Geelong’s city centre and is a popular attraction for visitors to Geelong. Together with its neighbouring Geelong Library and Heritage Centre, Geelong Gallery forms an essential part of Geelong’s culture precinct .

National Wool Museum

2. National Wool Museum

Geelong was built on its wool industry and was once regarded as the world’s wool capital. Although the wool industry is no longer the leading industry in Geelong in the modern days, its influence on Geelong’s culture and economy can still be found today.

To showcase Geelong’s wool industry, a National Wool Museum was opened in Geelong in 1988 for visitors to discover Geelong’s history through its wool industry. It is also Australia’s only comprehensive wool museum , which is well worth a visit.

Within the National Wool Museum, you can find an extensive display of Geelong’s wool industry from its early settlement era to its various industrial revolutions. Within the museum, visitors can also find a range of looms and tools used for wool making. There are also re-created millworker’s cottage and shearer’s station from the early 1900s, which are very interesting and educational.

After visiting National Wool Museum, we will take a short walk from Geelong city centre to visit Geelong’s beautiful waterfront.

Geelong Bollard Trail Walk

3. Geelong Bollard Trail Walk

Geelong Bollard Trail Walk is one of the most popular attractions in Geelong. It features over 100 reclaimed timber pylons , transformed into sculptures of iconic characters from Geelong’s history. These bollards are dotted along Geelong’s beautiful waterfront area between Rippleside Park and Limeburners Point , which forms one of the best walking trails in Geelong.

The one-way walk between Rippleside Park and Limeburners Point can take at least 1-hour to complete. There are also many interesting attractions to visit along this walk, such as the Carousel, the Giant Sky Wheel, and Eastern Beach. Hence, I suggest planning at least 2 hours for completing the one-way walk between Rippleside Park and Limeburners Point .

With that being said, most of the popular attractions along Geelong Bollard Trail are located between the Cunningham Pier and Eastern Beach. This walk itself takes only as little as 30 minutes one way. If interested, you can join the Wangim Walk and visit East Beach Promenade as well. For people who are only planning 1-day in Geelong, this can be a much better option .

Wangim Walk

4. Wangim Walk

Wangim Walk is a 440-metre long wave attenuator near Royal Geelong Yacht Club. It is a relatively new addition to Geelong’s waterfront area but provides an unparalleled view of Geelong’s skyline and Corio Bay. It is also a great spot for sunrise and sunset in Geelong.

This walk is flat and easily accessible. It took me only 20-minutes for a return walk in a leisurely manner. You can also complete this walk in a shorter time frame if in a rush.

Eastern Beach Promenade

5. Eastern Beach Promenade

Eastern Beach is a popular bathing beach in Geelong. Towards its eastern end, you can also find one of Geelong’s most recognisable landmarks, the Eastern Beach Promenade.

Eastern Beach Promenade is a 200-metre long, semi-circular, wooden platform that forms a shark-proof sea bath area along Eastern Beach. Visitors can take a leisure walk along the wooden platform to appreciate the stunning Corio Bay. There are also a diving tower and platforms along the promenade for visitors to enjoy a range of water activities within the sea bath.

A kid’s pool is also available nearby for children to enjoy the water safely. Toilets, showers, and changing facilities are also available at the pavilion on-shore. Kids’ playgrounds and picnic facilities are available as well. These all make Eastern Beach Promenade a great place for the entire family to enjoy.

Geelong Botanic Gardens

6. Geelong Botanic Gardens

Geelong Botanic Gardens is a beautiful botanic garden located near Eastern Beach Promenade. Although relatively small in comparison, Geelong Botanic Gardens is one of the most gorgeous botanic gardens I have visited in Australia.

Within Geelong Botanic Gardens, you can admire the tropical plants within the conservatory, take an Insta-worthy photo in its picturesque rose garden, and check out a range of native and international plants with a coffee in hand. A walk around the Geelong Botanic Gardens can take as little as 15-30 minutes . However, you may wish to spend a much longer time here to chill and relax.

Clifton Springs

7. The Dell & Clifton Springs

The Dell is a stunning spot between Geelong and Portarlington. It is famous for being home to a former mineral spring, Cliffton Springs.

On arriving at The Dell, you will first be greeted by a breathtaking view from its lookout platform, overlooking the beautiful Port Philip Bay. From this lookout, you can also obtain a great overview of Clifton Springs and the beautiful jetty remains.

To access the old jetties and Clifton Springs, there is a staircase near the lookout platform. Alternatively, there is also a long ramp to the beachfront for people with mobility issues.

Clifton Springs is a mineral spring, which was popular among locals and visitors between the 1870s and 1920s. This spring has since become inactive and no longer serves its original purpose. However, this site is still of cultural and environmental significance & is currently listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

To protect the relics from the site of the former springs, a boardwalk has been built around the former Clifton Springs. This boardwalk also provides a great view of The Dell. Educational information is also available along the walk for visitors to gain more insights into The Dell and Clifton Springs.

The drive between Geelong and The Dell takes about 25 minutes on average . Free carparks are available near the lookout platform. To make the most out of your visit to The Dell and Clifton Springs, make sure you plan at least 1-hour to spend around this spot .

Portarlington Pier

8. Portarlington Pier

Portarlington is located at the northern end of the Bellarine Peninsula. It is a beautiful little town with stunning coastal views. There is a lot more to discover around Portarlington. For this one-day itinerary, we will only be visiting its gorgeous Portarlington Pier due to limited time.

Portarlington Pier is about a 12-minute drive from The Dell and a 30-minute drive from Geelong . It is formed on a 500-metre-long breakwater, which stretches into the bay and provides a peaceful harbour for everyone to enjoy.

The views along Portarlington Pier are absolutely surreal and magnificent. This is especially true around sunset times. If time allows, you can also bring your fishing rod to catch some Pinkies or Snappers while waiting for sunset.

A return walk along Portarlington Pier takes about 30 minutes to complete , but you may wish to plan for more time to enjoy the views and serenity along Portarlington Pier.

The 15 Best Things To Do In Geelong

Victoria’s second largest city marries the relaxed aura of a coastal town with a bustling food, wine and arts scene.

Sun, surf and excellent local culture –  Geelong is a city that has all bases covered. Whether you’re a creature that thrives in the great outdoors, or prefers exploring galleries and sipping wine (or both), this buzzing regional powerhouse offers a boundless array of things to do. To supercharge your itinerary we’ve put together the best things to eat, drink, see and experience while you’re there. Got kids in tow? We’ve picked out some fun and family-friendly activities for you to get around too.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: OUT & ABOUT

Learn to surf in a day with the help of pros.

You’d be remiss to visit this part of the world and not take advantage of its famed surf. If you’re feeling a bit rusty however (or are a first-timer), fear not because there are trusty schools that’ll have you standing up in no time. Learn-to-surf schools like Go Ride A Wave offer introductory lessons with qualified instructors to teach you the basics, providing full-length wetsuits, soft surfboards and essential safety instructions to help you progress quickly. Already know what you’re doing? You can hire surf equipment and stand up paddle boards too.

Explore the lush surrounds of the Barwon River

The 160-kilometre Barwon River is one of Victoria’s iconic waterways, and it passes right through the heart of Geelong. The river and its surrounds are rife with opportunities for watersports, walking, cycling, fishing and relaxing. Pack a picnic to enjoy by the river at leafy Queens Park , make your way up to Buckley Falls to see water cascading over rocks, explore the sculptures and rock art at Yollinko Aboriginal Garden or go birdwatching at Balyang Sanctuary . There are also many kilometres of sealed paths along the river’s banks that are perfect for strolling and cycling.

Soak up village vibes and score goodies at markets

If there’s one thing Geelong locals love, it’s a good market – they’ve got dozens of them sprinkled throughout the calendar. Spend a morning wandering around one to meet passionate local producers and makers, try delicious regional food, nab a bargain and simply soak in the atmosphere. Visit the South Geelong Farmers Market for stunning gourmet goods and farm fresh produce, while the Waterfront Growers Market offers seaside views, live music and food trucks. After a gift to take home? The talented artisans at Piccadilly Market sell lovely handmade and designed wares that are a cut above the mass-produced stuff.

Take a scenic flight over Corio Bay

Looking to take your things to do in Geelong list and dial it up to eleven? A scenic flight over Corio Bay is in order, with Adventure Flight Co's Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong trip. Spectacular coastal scenery awaits, from Sorrento to Lorne. Enjoy the privilege of soaring over some of Australia's most striking coastline. You’ll enjoy a unique aerial perspective like none other. The vibrant orange cliff lines, sparkling turquoise waters and soothing fresh air all combine to deliver an unforgettable experience.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: ARTS & CULTURE

Explore these vintage markets to discover a treasure trove of retro finds  .

Geelong has a host of fantastic vintage markets and stores for you to spend hours perusing - and getting lost in a sea of retro fashion, vintage homewares, magical memorabilia and unexpectedly chic knick-knacks. Our favourites are Geelong Vintage Market and The Mill Market Geelong .

Wander around the hallowed halls of Geelong Gallery

Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s oldest and most lauded regional art galleries. Since 1896 it has been amassing an outstanding collection of Australian and European painting, sculpture, printmaking and decorative arts dating from the 18th century to today. Visit to see images documenting the early days of Geelong and its evolution into a thriving modern city. Thrilling temporary exhibitions, creative events and workshops, plus an enticing gift shop make it an extra worthwhile destination.

55 Little Malop Street, Geelong

Take yourself on a street art tour

The art in Geelong certainly isn’t limited to Gallery walls, however. Take a walk around town and you’re bound to see vibrant, humourous and breathtaking street art splashing the city’s streets and laneways. Don’t miss Cam Scale’s ‘To The Unknown Mariner’, a large mural on the corner of James St and Mimms Lane that pays tribute to Geelong’s maritime history, as well as the colourful, community-driven Union Street mural.

Catch A Gig At Geelong Arts Centre

Did you know that Geelong is a UNESCO-designated Creative City? So it only makes sense that it has a flourishing performing arts industry, and Geelong Arts Centre is at the heart of it all. Check out their what’s on to see the wide range of shows you can book, from exciting local theatre to big name visiting artists. Raucous comedy, moving musicals and head-banging rock gigs – they’ve got it all, and it’s only going to get bigger and better. A massive $140 million upgrade of the Little Malop Street building is almost complete, with multiple new performance venues and striking design to come.

81 Ryrie Street, Geelong

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: FAMILY FRIENDLY

Delight the little ones with a day at the museum of play and art.

Geelong’s MoPA is a state-of-the-art children’s museum that’s acclaimed around the world – so if you’ve got little ones in tow, this is a must visit. The beautiful facility is dense with immersive, interactive exhibits that celebrate play-based learning. Both fun and educational, kids from 12 months up to early primary age will be enthralled for hours as their creativity is nurtured. Considerate change room facilities, pram parking and low-sensory spaces ensure it’s a comfortable visit, and the onsite café has lots of healthy snacks (and great coffee to boot).

51 McKillop Street, Geelong

Graze on crispy fish and chips all over town

There’s no better place to unwrap a classic fish and chip lunch than in a seaside town like Geelong (and it’s a universally kid-approved meal). Take the family on a fish and chip tour of the city and find your favourite. Start at the Geelong Boat House , a local icon that’s perched over the water on a barge, where you can eat freshly delivered seafood, cooked simply, at tables on the gangplank or upstairs on the bridge deck. Other waterfront venues where you can get a killer rendition include Fishermen’s Pier , King George Fish and Chips , and Sailor’s Rest .

Frolick away the day at Eastern Beach

Spend the day splashing in seawater and feel your worldly stresses melt away. Eastern Beach is located conveniently at the city’s waterfront on Corio Bay, and is home to a charming art-deco sea-bathing complex that was first built in the 1930s. Here you’ll find an enclosed sea bath, boardwalk, diving towers, floating islands and children’s pool for the whole family to enjoy. Meanwhile a bustling kiosk, barbecue facilities and terraced lawns provide everything you need for a leisurely post-dip picnic.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: EAT & DRINK

Start the day off right with a breakfast at one of these delicious geelong cafes.

Victoria’s second largest city has firmly established itself as a top tier place to eat and drink and their café scene is no different. Locals and visitors are spoiled for choice with acclaimed brew bars, trendy bagel shops, family-friendly cafés and healthy havens all at their front door. Pick up a coffee on your way to the beach at Pavilion or refuel with a sit down brunch after your swim at Tonton - just two of our favourites and both of which become just as delightful dinner time haunts, for delicious share plates and refreshing cocktails.

Dine at these unmissable Geelong restaurants

You’ll never be short of an unforgettable meal in Geelong, where the dining options are as brilliant as they are broad. Consult our guide to the best restaurants in Geelong for all the must-book places to put on your radar, from the highly acclaimed Igni , a fine diner where everything is cooked over wood fire, to the cosy Bistrot St Jean , a quintessentially French spot where the onion soup is steamy and carafés of wine are flowing.

Embark on a day of tastings with a friendly wine tour

Geelong and the wider Bellarine region produce some of the finest wines in the state, and the best way to experience the cream of the crop (without worrying about finding a designated driver) is to hop on a winery tour. Experienced operators such as Wilson’s Wine Tours , For the Love of Grape and Geelong Winery Tours offer convenient pick up and drop offs, tastings at all the top cellar doors, delicious lunches and invaluable insights. While there’s a diverse range of varietals grown throughout the area, pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz are done particularly well.

Sink a cold one at Geelong’s many breweries

More of a beer person? Geelong has you covered for that, too. The Little Creatures outpost here has become as much of a destination as the original brewery in Fremantle. It’s the birthplace of their Furphy ale, that staple of bottle shops and barbecues everywhere, and continues to be 100 per cent brewed in Geelong to this day. Swing by for that classic brewery experience: bustling canteen, fresh tap beers and seeing where the magic happens. Little Creatures also kickstarted a local brewery scene that’s stronger than ever – so put Valhalla Taproom , Blackmans Brewery and White Rabbit Barrel Hall on your visit list too.

Continue exploring this unforgettable part of the world with the help of our picks for great accommodation in Torquay , Lorne and all along the Great Ocean Road . And why not stay on the road with eight more bucket list road trips to take across Victoria .

Planning to visit Geelong, Australia? If yes, in this post you can find a Geelong itinerary for 3 days including the best things to do in Geelong.

Just an hour’s drive south of Melbourne , Geelong is a beautiful waterfront city.

Although it’s a popular destination for domestic travellers this delightful town is not well-known outside of Australia. And it’s the perfect destination for visitors who want to get off the typical tourist trail for a while.

Here you’ll find tiny laneways filled with graffiti art, industrial spaces, cool cafes and bars, galleries, museums, and the most spectacular Waterfront south of Sydney !

While Geelong is a small regional city it actually encompasses a large area, including the Bellarine Peninsula, and to get the most from your trip I recommend hiring a car. That way you have the freedom to explore and discover everything the region has to offer.

There’s a wide range of places to stay in Geelong and it’s easy to find the perfect accommodation that best suits your needs. You won’t go hungry either as there are heaps of fantastic places to eat from fine dining to chic cafes and local pubs.

As a local I know just how amazing Geelong and its surrounding area is and below you’ll find my 3-day itinerary. Just remember this is only a guide, so have a play around with it and do what’s best for you. After all, we don’t all like the same things!

Morning Activity – Explore The Geelong Waterfront

The Geelong Waterfront is the most popular attraction in the city, and it’s the perfect place to start your explorations.

It was originally a major trading port and most of the foreshore was dedicated to the wool trade. These days it’s a vibrant cosmopolitan area with bars, cafes, a beach and water park, festivals, and markets.

Spend the morning exploring the area, highlights include Eastern Beach, Cunningham Pier, the Geelong Yacht Club, Rippleside Park, and the historic carousel.

A standout feature of the Waterfront is the iconic Baywalk Bollards. These colourful characters have been made out of timber pylons from an old city pier.

Each one tells a story about the people who played a part in the city’s history. And no trip to Geelong is complete until you’ve had your photo taken with one!

Lunch At The Boat House

Perched over the water on a secured barge the Boat House serves up top-notch fish and chips. Sit at tables on the gangplank, upstairs on the deck, or grab a rug and enjoy a picnic on the grassy slopes with views across the bay.

Afternoon Activity – Visit The National Wool Museum

The National Wool Museum is a great place to learn about our culture and national identity, with first-hand accounts of the hardships and challenges our farmers have faced.

The museum is housed in a beautiful old bluestone wool store located between the Waterfront and central Geelong. Inside, visitors will find contemporary exhibitions and cultural displays, and it offers hands-on exploration and entertainment for people of all ages.

Check Out The Laneways And Street Art

The lanes and alleys of central Geelong are festooned with a number of street art, 3D, and augmented reality murals.

Many of the murals feature famous Geelong identities like the Divinyls Chrissy Amphlett and other important historical people.

What better way to get your bearings around the town than to stretch your legs while searching for all this fabulous art?

Located 250 metres out over the bay on Cunningham Pier, Wah Wah Gee has an Asian inspired menu that’s perfect for sharing with friends.

It’s amazing floor to ceiling windows offer uninterrupted water views and arguably the best vantage point to enjoy sunset.

Take a tip from the locals and be sure to order the Bao Buns.

After dinner kick on upstairs at Wah Bah.

Geelong Itinerary Day 2

Breakfast at cafe go.

A Geelong favourite, Cafe Go has a unique and quirky vibe with unusual artworks, comfy corner spaces, a cosy fireplace, and a big leafy courtyard.

The delicious food is made using local, free-range, and organic produce. Diners can enjoy such delights as homemade muesli with fresh fruit and yogurt or for something more hearty the breaky burger is a popular choice.

After breakfast jump in the car and head to the Bellarine Peninsula.

Morning Activity – Visit Jirrahlinga Wildlife Sanctuary

Located at Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula, Jirrahlinga Koala & Wildlife Sanctuary is a safe haven for sick and rescued Australian wildlife. It’s run entirely on donations and boasts a long track record in rehabilitating koalas and other animal orphans back into their natural habitat.

Along with its animal rescue service, Jirrahlinga also has three specialist hospitals including separate specialist facilities for birds and koalas. The sanctuary also helps kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wombats, echidnas, and reptiles.

The staff are knowledgeable and kind, and a visit here is a must for anyone who’d like to learn about Australia’s unique wildlife. Best of all the animal encounter sessions allow visitors to get up close and pat these beautiful creatures.

Lunch At Annie’s Provedore

Bringing the taste and style of Italy to Barwon Heads, Annie’s serves up superb coffee and wonderful tasty treats – pizza!

It’s a one of a kind cafe, deli, and food retailer all rolled into one impressive store. And the shop’s shelves positively grown under the weight of local oils, jams, and chutneys, freshly baked bread, the world’s best cheeses, and cured meats.

Be sure to fill your bags before you leave!

RECOMMENDED: 5 days in Sydney Itinerary

Afternoon Activity – Wine Tasting

Producing top-class cool climate maritime wines, the Peninsula is one of Victoria’s best-kept wine secrets. So why not spend the afternoon amongst the vines tasting some of the best wine the state has to offer.

There are around 20 cellar doors to choose from, all of them are surrounded by either panoramic water views or magnetic Victorian hinterland.

As you head out of Barwon Heads, for something truly unique, make Oakdene Vineyards your first stop. It has a one of a kind cellar door that looks like a house that’s been blown over by the wind!

The staff here are locals who are keen to share their knowledge and help you decide which wines are best for you. While you’re here allow time to wander the gardens that are filled with delightful artworks and sculptures.

Then make your way to Queenscliff and Basils Farm, an artisan winery situated on Swan Bay. Set in a weatherboard cottage it has a rustic farmhouse charm with a veggie patch and fire pit. There are also market gardens, an orchard, and farm animals including llamas and baby doll sheep.

Along with wine tastings, the cellar door has local olive oil and house made preserves and relishes to try.

Dinner – The Q Train

The Q Train serves a six-course degustation feast as it chugs along the heritage railway line between Queenscliff and Drysdale.

Everything is prepared on board, and there’s plenty of time to relax and enjoy the view of passing vineyards, olive groves, and lush rolling hills.

After dinner, you can drive back to Geelong, but there are some fab places to stay in Queenscliff and I recommend spending the night in a cute B&B.

Geelong Itinerary Day 3

Breakfast at 9 grams.

Good food in Geelong isn’t limited to the city and Waterfront, and you’ll find great places to eat in the suburbs as well.

One of the best spots for breakfast is 9 Grams in Pakington Street Newtown. This popular cafe serves amazing coffee and generously sized meals, firm favourites are the corn fritters and bircher muesli.

If you stayed in Queenscliff (great decision!) the Shelter Shed is a good spot to fill up before your last day of sightseeing.

Morning Activity – Learn About Aboriginal Culture

Visitors to Australia often mistakenly believe the only place to learn about Aboriginal culture is in the Outback. Nothing could be further from the truth!

The Geelong region is home to the Wathaurong tribe, part of the Kulin Nation, and you can learn about the land and its First People here, at the Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre.

Developed to promote Reconciliation, Narana offers self-guided tours, cultural educators, visitor programs, and an indigenous art gallery.

Outside you’ll find a native garden with wonderful examples of Aboriginal rock art. The bushland garden is also home to swamp wallabies, emus, and eastern grey kangaroos. Many of whom will come up to you looking for a pat!

There’s also a gift shop and charming cafe serving unique dishes inspired by indigenous ingredients. Try the wattleseed scones with lemon myrtle cream. Yum!

day trip geelong

Lunch At Murphy’s Pub

Described as ‘Dublin meets Fitzroy’, Murphy’s Pub has been serving Geelong locals since 1855.

It has three levels including a rooftop bar with glorious views across the rooftops to Corio Bay. Be sure to check it out for your last glimpse of the bay before leaving town.

The diverse menu offers both Irish classics and pub favourites, as well as vegan and vegetarian options – the eggplant parmigiana is to-die-for!

Another Favorite: Best Things to do in Canberra

Afternoon Activity – Shop At The Vintage Market

The Geelong Vintage Market is located in an old glass factory in North Geelong, and it’s a great last stop on your way out of town.

It’s a huge space that’s been arranged into over 60 independent stalls. Each stall has its own unique character and mix of goods for sale. And shoppers can rummage through every retro, vintage, and collectible item imaginable.

Everything is in excellent condition and it’s possible to spend many hours browsing through the diverse range of wares.

I hope this 3-day Geelong itinerary has helped you plan your trip. I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time!

day trip geelong

Make the most of the weekend.

As happening as Geelong might be these days, sometimes we just want to hit the road and do some exploring. Next time you’re stuck for something to do on the weekend, why not fill up the tank, load up on snacks, download a banging playlist and take a little day trip?

Luckily Geelong has plenty of day trip options that might tickle your fancy – and they’re just an hour or so drive away.

Hike You-Yangs Regional Park

Situated only 22km North of Geelong the 340-metre high granite peaks of the You Yangs prove themselves to be one of the hottest day trips just outside of Geelong.

With magnificent views and birdlife, you’ll find a diverse range of landscape and scenery. Towering with sparse native trees and eucalypts, you may even spot a koala and other wildlife along your voyage. As part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape, ensure to respect the deep connection of the Wadawurrung People and feel the culture of the traditional owners of the land.

Have a knack for bike-riding? No problem, take your mountain bike along and explore more than fifty kilometres of trails, perfect for beginners and experts. You can even reach the highest point and prepared to be amazed by the views of Melbourne and Geelong.

Hot tip: the hike is incredible at dawn or dusk so you can see the stunning golden sky over the entire bay.

Find out more info here . If you’re with the kids, we recommend also checking out this You Yangs Big Rock walk .

Explore the beauty of Hepburn Springs

About an hour drive from Geelong is the mesmerising Hepburn Springs, Australia’s largest conservation of mineral springs.

We recommend sussing out the Tipperary Walking Track , which runs from picturesque Lake Daylesford to the Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve, following Sailors Creek and Spring Creek through foothill forest for most of the way. The 16km track can be walked in five to six hours, is mostly level to gently undulating and is quite easy walking.

If you’re looking for a shorter walk, there is a track between Lake Daylesford and Bryces Flat on both sides of Sailors Creek allowing for loop walks of various lengths.

There’s even a pretty decent 18-hole golf course if that’s more your style – just watch for the resident wild kangaroos, and of course the Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve, Australia’s first Mineral Reserve created in 1865 and houses the historic Bathhouse and Pavilion buildings. If you can get yourself a booking, the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa has just reopened to regional Victorians.

Chase Waterfalls in Lorne

We are very fortunate in regional Victoria to be surrounded by some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state – all located an hour away. If you’re feeling like getting out of the house for a day and exploring the beauty that is the Great Ocean Road, there’s at least 10 waterfalls located in Lorne that will keep you both busy and mesmerised for an entire day. There’s Erskine Falls which plunges (or trickles, depending on recent rainfall levels) down a 30-metre drop into the Erskine River; Henderson Falls which cascades over a moss-capped cliff face to a small pool below; Cumberland Falls and its dramatic but magnificent cliffs, gentle streams, peaceful pools, and never ending views, among others.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 of our favourites here , along with links to their locations if you’re ready to go chasing waterfalls.

View this post on Instagram   Henderson Falls 💦 For the past little while I have had the all new Nikon ℤ5 in my greasy little hands! What can I say.. This ‘entry level’ full frame mirrorless is one powerful piece of gear!! I get the same vibes and excitement using it as I did when I first owned the D750, all those years back.. but this time, with the benefits of the mirrorless tech! 🤤🤤 While the ℤ5 has a few of features from its 2 bigger siblings, ℤ6 & ℤ7, this new body also has on-the-go USB-C charging, longer battery life and 5-axis (gimble-like) stabilisation. This shot was taken hand held annnd one legged, while I reached down off the bank to get a nice low perspective with a 1 second exposure. The inbuilt stabilisation worked a treat here! If you are looking for an upgrade or not sure what to get for you first full frame, this really is the perfect all rounder 👌 Join me this Wednesday as I break down my favourite features from this new mirrorless and go over a few of my photography tips and tricks! Head to Kyneton for Australia’s best pie

If you love your pies and you’re willing to drive an hour and a half, then this is a bucket list item for any local day-tripper.

Victoria’s Country Cob Bakery, located in the darling regional town of Kyneton, was named the winner of Australia’s Best Pie with their pepper-beef pie for the third year in a row last year – and that’s just something you have to taste for yourself to understand why. If you’re not a fan of pepper-beef, they’ve also won prizes for Australia’s best plain beef pie; best gourmet pie (for the barbequed pork and quail egg creation); best flavoured beef pie (another win for the pepper-beef); and best vegetarian or vegan pie (for the curried cauliflower, lentil and chickpea), catering to absolutely any taste bud.

The bakery is open 6am to 3pm daily, and is located at 130-132 Mollison St, Kyneton. Visit the website for more info.

Hike Hanging Rock Reserve

If you’ve left enough time on your pie-eating mission, then we recommend you also check out Hanging Rock Reserve, a 17-minute drive from Kyneton or an hour and a half from Geelong if you’d prefer to bypass the famous pie (why would you though?).

The massive 105-meter-high extinct volcano, now eroded into columns, was the location for Peter Weir’s iconic film, Picnic at Hanging Rock, based on the book by Joan Lindsay. The rock is also an important aboriginal landmark and was reputedly a refuge for bushrangers during the Gold Rush.

If you’ve got your walking shoes on, Hanging Rock Reserve is truly a beautiful spot to hike in the fresh eucalyptus-tinged air. The round-trip climb to the top takes about 50 minutes, with plenty of secret nooks to slither in along the way and beautiful views over the countryside. You can also explore the other hiking trails that weave through the reserve. Definitely a bucket list visit for regional Victorians.

This sweet retreat features a showroom filled with thousands of chocolates, chocolate tastings (with social distancing measures in place) and an international team of six chocolatiers. Located just 30 minutes from Geelong, it’s the perfect excuse for an afternoon of browsing handcrafted chocolates, enjoying ice cream, and sussing out the sweet and savoury delights to take-away – including lasagne. Oh, and did we mention there are 15 acres of landscaped grounds to discover too? The Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery is located at 1200, Great Ocean Road, Bellbrae. Admire the Lake Wendouree Precinct

Located just a little over an hour’s drive from Geelong, you won’t regret taking a roadie to see the jewel in Ballarat’s crown — Lake Wendouree and the adjoining Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Providing the perfect escape from reality, you can admire the local swans glide along the glistening waters as you walk, run or ride around the six-kilometre Steve Moneghetti track. Stop by one of the lakeside cafes for a takeaway coffee, or picnic by the water’s edge, then meander along pebbled paths at the historic Ballarat Botanical Gardens and soak up the beauty of the grand floral displays, heritage oak trees, Italian marble statues and the iconic Prime Ministers Avenue.

There’s actually plenty to do in Ballarat. We’ve compiled a little guide here of a bunch of free activities if you’re just looking for a fun, cheap day out of the house.

Fun fact: the lake hosted the rowing and canoeing during the 1956 Olympics.

Take a drive to Portarlington

With uninterrupted bay views across to the You Yangs and, on a clear day, Melbourne, Portarlington is a beautiful bayside town with loads of local flavour. The coastal road from Portarlington to St Leonards is glorious, hugging the water closely and showing off big blue skies, clear calm water and the surrounding wineries and olive groves. If it’s a nice enough day, take a slow walk and have a swim at the bay beach, kick back on the beautiful foreshore or try your luck with the rod and reel. Finish the day with a feast of freshly caught mussels and oysters from Advanced Mussel Supply available at The Little Mussel Cafe, take away fish and chips, and of course, make sure you stop by Daniel’s Donuts for doughy treats with familiar combinations and surprising twists. There’s also The Whiskery, a rustic space to have a cocktail, gin or whisky on the way home.

This option’s close to home but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Go Strawberry Picking

Nothing says summer on the coast quite like juicy strawberries warm from the sun, and fortunately for us, we have the opportunity to pick-your-own right on our doorstep.

Located between Geelong and Torquay, Surf Coast Strawberry Fields is a ‘pick your own’ strawberry farm with approximately nine acres of delicious strawberries, making it a great place to unwind, and enjoy the experience of fresh fruit picking, paddock to punnet. You can usually find a coffee and ice cream cart is on site, and their strawberry preserves available for purchase.

Just make sure to check their website or Facebook for updates on when they’re open as it’s purely dependent on the berries.

Please note, this is a seasonal activity.

Explore The Redwoods and The Otways

Located an hour and a half from Geelong and tucked within the heart of the Otways, on the banks of the Aire River south of Beech Forest surrounded by the native eucalypts, stands a spectacular forest of Californian Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) worthy of a day trip. This 85 year old plantation of Californian Redwoods has become a favourite local picnic area, and walking between the massive trunks flanking the river for the first time creates a special feeling of awe and reverence – one that’s really not to be missed in your lifetime.

As you’ve already jumped in the car, Hopetoun Falls and Beauchamp Falls are within close driving proximity to The Redwoods and are highly recommended to visit while in the region.

View this post on Instagram   The Great Ocean Road is not only about rock formations and cliffs. Heading into the Otways is a treat in itself. The Californian Redwood Forest does not disappoint. Snap a photo at Loch Ard Gorge

Offshore stacks, blowholes and the indescribable beauty of formations like the Razorback and Island arch make this precinct the one with the lot and definitely worth putting on your bucket list. It’s named after the famous 1878 shipwreck on nearby Mutton Bird Island, where fifty-two people were lost from the Loch Ard and only two teenage survivors were fortunate enough to be washed into the only safe gorge on the coast. Other people on the ship were washed into adjacent gorges and perished. The Gorge is unusual for this section of coast, in that it has a relatively calm interior. It has a low energy beach and moderate sloping dune that makes the beach accessible with caution in most tide and ocean conditions, and is definitely worth exploring.

To witness the magic, there are a few different walks to choose from, ranging between 200m – 3km.

It is almost impossible to walk the trails and not be moved by the powers of nature that have shaped and the shipwreck history that defines the area. There are also three separate Loch Ard Gorge car parks so make sure you remember which one you’ve parked at.

You can find its exact location here .

In the years prior to its closing, it was a prison, an industrial school for young girls, a hospital for the sick and dying, a military detention centre, and ultimately a training prison.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is on a five-day visit to China

Leila Fadel

NPR's Leila Fadel talks to Mary Lovely, senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics, about Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit to China.

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is finishing a trip to China, where she's managed to become a favorite on Chinese social media. Posts with the secretary masterfully using chopsticks have been viewed millions of times there. But has the secretary's popularity online translated to success for the actual purpose of her trip, trade talks? For more on Yellen's visit and relations between the world's two largest economies, we're joined by Mary Lovely. She's a senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Good morning, Mary.

MARY LOVELY: Good morning.

FADEL: Thanks for being on the program. So there are a lot of competing U.S. and Chinese interests over goods like electric vehicles, solar panels, as well as national security concerns related to the economy. So I want to start with listening to what Yellen said to the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, yesterday.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

JANET YELLEN: I believe that, over the past year, we've put our bilateral relationship on a more stable footing.

FADEL: Mary, does that strike you as true, and does Yellen's trip further destabilize the relationship?

LOVELY: Well, that's an interesting question. I believe it is true that the U.S. and China talking at the highest levels of government is extremely important to not just stabilizing the relationship, but trying to reduce conflict, so I think it's important. It doesn't mean that many problems have been solved. It's an attempt by both sides to begin to solve some problems, I think. And has her trip destabilized it? No, I don't see that it has.

FADEL: Were there any breakthroughs with this trip?

LOVELY: Well, I think the mission is - was not so much to have a breakthrough as to warn the Chinese. It seems as though the Biden administration is teeing up more trade restrictions against China. And in particular, we're talking about so-called new energy products - EVs, solar panels, batteries. And there might have been some attempt to, you know, negotiate with the Chinese to get them to restrain, in some way, their exports, but it doesn't seem like anything like that has happened. So it can be seen as an attempt by the administration to avoid tariffs and settle this in a different way.

FADEL: Now, Yellen went to China with a big message, which is that China is overproducing and flooding the market with cheap products, as the administration puts it, and that hurts local production here. How was that message received on her trip?

LOVELY: Well, China has admitted that it has a problem with overcapacity, certainly in the past on steel and cement. And more recently, it was discussed at the work program last December. So at the highest levels of the Chinese Communist Party, they have admitted that there are - overcapacity.

I think where the Chinese and the U.S. most clearly disagree is in electric vehicles. China has become a strong exporter of those vehicles, as is - Europe. The U.S. is far behind, exporting about a tenth of what China and the United - and Europe export each month. But these EVs are, in some sense, a threat to the future. So as the Biden administration and the United States in general has invested in transitioning its auto sector toward EVs, it's important that those, you know, green shoots have a chance to take off.

And there's a fear that Chinese companies lack the basic profit-based motive of when they build too much, inventory builds up, they pull back production. Instead, as we've seen in other industries in the past, China keeps pumping out more product.

FADEL: Really quickly, before I let you go, Yellen's making this visit right before a presidential election, meaning they - China might not be see - dealing with the same man soon or could be dealing with the same man. Does that affect her trip?

LOVELY: Yes, I think it does. I think the Chinese don't really know, if they cut a deal, if it will hold. President Trump has certainly argued for much more draconian restrictions against China.

FADEL: That's Mary Lovely, a senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Thank you so much.

LOVELY: You're welcome.

San Francisco Giants' Six-Game Florida Road Trip Will Show Team's True Status

After getting a much-needed victory at home before an off day, the San Francisco Giants are starting their road trip that will give an idea about if they can contend or not.

  • Author: Brad Wakai

In this story:

The San Francisco Giants had one of the most under-the-radar offseasons after signing some of the biggest names who were available on the market.

Getting Korean phenom Jung Hoo Lee, the reigning NL Cy Young Winner Blake Snell, and one of the best third baseman in the game Matt Chapman, lifted up the profile of their roster to the point where there were expectations for them to compete for a playoff spot.

But things haven't quite gone to plan so far.

They sit with a 5-8 record and needed a strong performance on Wednesday to avoid being swept by the Washington Nationals .

Maybe that's what gets the Giants going after they took a much different approach on the base paths and got another great pitching performance from Jordan Hicks.

But heading into this six-game Florida road trip where they face the Tampa Bay Rays starting Friday and the Miami Marlins after that series is complete, this will truly give an idea about if they can contend or not.

The Rays are always formidable, but they don't quite have that magical aura around them like they've had in years past. They currently sit at 7-6 with offensive numbers around the middle of the league and pitching numbers much worse than their previous iterations.

Tampa Bay is gettable, and if the Giants are going to truly compete in a loaded National League, they need to show that they can win these types of games.

Following those three contests, they'll head south to take on the Marlins who have the worst record in the MLB entering Friday's action.

San Francisco needs to dominate this series, certainly winning it, but with the aim of sweeping.

Good teams beat the bad teams and are also able to compete with other good teams.

That's what the Giants have on this road trip as they get set to face the Rays in a matchup that is winnable before hitting Miami where they should leave victorious.

She's from Green Bay. He's from the United Kingdom. On their wedding day, they went head over heels at Kwik Trip.

GREEN BAY - When James McKenzie-Brown came to Wisconsin from the United Kingdom, he didn’t just fall head over heels for Pati Holschbach.

He fell in love with  Kwik Trip , too.

It was Holschbach first, mind you, and the popular Wisconsin-based convenience store chain second. That’s important to note in a love story that spans 3,903 miles, two and half years and countless Big Buddy fountain drinks.

When it came to their wedding day on March 29, it just seemed right that it was all three of them — a nurse from Green Bay, an armed police officer from London and Kwik Trip store No. 827 on Lombardi Avenue — together in their photos.

Love, Wisconsin style.

To appreciate the sweetness of the photo shoot, at a gas station on the happiest day of their lives, you have to first get to know the couple.

“To tell people our story of how we began, if anybody else would tell me this story, it would sound kind of, I would say, crazy,” Holschbach said.

The two met on Tinder. She was living in Milwaukee at the time and had the distance for potential matches on the dating app set to within 80 miles. He was in Twickenham, just outside London, and had his set to 10 miles. There were 3,903 miles and a whole big pond between them. Their profiles should never have crossed paths but somehow they did.

Love works in mysterious ways.

Within 24 hours, they were talking. Eighteen days later, on Dec. 8, 2021, he flew to Wisconsin to see her. From the moment they said hello to one another, it felt different.

“We both just knew,” Holschbach said.

They felt incredibly comfortable around each other and discovered they had similar senses of humor. They had both chosen the careers they did, because they wanted to help people. They both enjoyed going to estate sales and looking for antiques.

“But one of the things that really attracted me to him and him to me was we both absolutely love animals, like we’re obsessed with dogs and cats,” she said. “We’re the kind of people where anytime we see a dog, we have to point it out, like it’s our first time seeing a dog.”

It was Holschbach’s elderly 15-year-old rescue pitbull, Minnie, who sealed the deal. An excellent judge of character but leery of men due to her past, the first thing she did when McKenzie-Brown came to visit was climb right into his lap and snuggle in.

“She wouldn’t even climb in my lap and I was her mom,” Holschbach said. “Then I just instantly knew. ‘Yep, this is the one.’”

They were engaged on April 13, 2022 — four months and five days after they met.

Big Buddy drinks are their go-to, but you can't beat the fried chicken

Before they could marry, they had to secure a K-1 visa , which allows a U.S. citizen to bring a fiancé or fiancée to the country for the purpose of marriage and becoming a lawful permanent resident. It was a process that stretched across nearly two years and required many back-and-forth trips.

That’s where Kwik Trip enters the story.

McKenzie-Brown found himself “enthralled with all that is Midwest culture” whenever he came to visit. Potluck staples — can’t-miss fare like walking tacos, scotcheroos, Snickers salad and especially beer dip — fascinated him. Being from the U.K., where people love nothing more than to talk about the weather, he also appreciated Wisconsin’s four seasons, sometimes all in the same week, as a goldmine of conversation.

More local flavor YouTuber Nick Johnson spent 3 days in Green Bay, discovered a 'uniquely American' city, super nice people, lots cheese

Holschbach grew up in Green Bay and graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1996. She was well acquainted with the joys of Kwik Trip and its status as a Wisconsin institution. She knew her future husband had to experience it for himself.

“He was like, ‘You want to take me to a gas station?’” she said. “I’m like, ‘Yes! But you just wait, you just wait.’”

He was immediately smitten. He loved it all, from the feeling that he had just walked into a little city all onto itself to the signature “see ya next time” from the clerk on his way out the door.

During the couple’s many trips back and forth to the airport or on the drive up to Green Bay to see Holschbach’s parents, Kwik Trips became a part of their lives. Their go-to is the Big Buddy fountain soda, but the Glazers doughnuts, Cinnabon cinnamon roll-flavored cappuccinos and the cheesy chicken casserole are also among their favorites.

“And you can’t beat their fried chicken,” Holschbach said. “Their fried chicken is really good.”

After the ceremony at the Brown County Courthouse, it was off to Kwik Trip on Lombardi Avenue

One of the conditions of being issued a K-1 visa is that once the fiancé comes to the United States, the couple has just 90 days to get married. That makes planning a large, elaborate wedding nearly impossible, so Holschbach and McKenzie-Brown opted for a small, intimate ceremony with family and a few friends.

There were two things they knew they wanted to be part of the day.

One was a hand-tied bridal bouquet of five dozen white carnations from Petal Pusher Floral Boutique in the Broadway District. Holschbach had worked for owner Nichole Campbell years ago and adored that same bouquet Petal Pusher had created for a wedding expo. She never forgot it.

The other was to have photos taken at Kwik Trip by Erika Krause Photography . Holschbach has known her for 14 years, ever since she was the labor and delivery nurse assigned to the birth of her second child at Aurora BayCare and then again for her third child. Krause was excited to do her first bride-and-groom-at-Kwik Trip photo session.

After the couple exchanged vows in a civil ceremony at the Brown County Courthouse, they headed to a Kwik Trip, where the employee in charge told them not only was it OK to shoot photos inside the store but that it happens all the time.

“They were just the nicest bunch of people,” Holschbach said.

They even gave them a complimentary doughnut as a prop. There are shots of the happy couple with intertwined arms with Big Buddy cups, sharing a smooch in one of the aisles and standing by a cooler door that reads “Cold Beer Enter Here.”

Two of their favorites portraits were taken outside, with Holschbach’s bouquet and McKenzie-Brown’s mini Union Jack flag outshone only by the smiles on their faces.

You might be wondering if there was a Kwik Trip-themed wedding dinner with fancy three-tiered plates of Glazers, platters of fried chicken and barbecue pork rib sandwiches and baskets of reasonably priced bananas. There was not. They did their dining at Italian restaurant Angelina in downtown Green Bay.

Years from now, when they look back at the photographs taken at store No. 827, what might they think?

“I’m sure we’ll probably say, ‘Oh my God, we really had our pictures taken at a gas station.' But that’s just part of our personality,” Holschbach said. “We’ll just more so, I think, remember it for how much fun it was and just how happy everyone was and how supportive they were. It was a great day. It was a very joyous day ... and that’s conveyed in the pictures.”

The couple, who just moved to Kimberly, already know how they’ll celebrate their anniversary each year: a fountain drink at Kwik Trip and dinner at Angelina.
