Clear your browsing history
You can remove all records that Safari keeps of where you’ve browsed during a period of time you choose. If your Mac and your other devices have the iCloud Safari feature turned on, your browsing history is removed from all of them. Clearing your browsing history in Safari doesn’t clear any browsing histories kept independently by websites you visited.
Open Safari for me
Choose History > Clear History and Website Data, then click the pop-up menu and choose how far back you want your browsing history cleared.
When you clear your history, Safari removes data it saves as a result of your browsing, including:
History of webpages you visited
The back and forward list for open webpages
Top Sites that aren’t marked as permanent
Frequently visited site list
Cookies and website data saved while visiting webpages
Recent searches
Icons for open webpages
Snapshots saved for open webpages
List of items you downloaded (downloaded files aren’t removed)
Websites added for Quick Website Search
Websites that asked to use your location
Websites that asked to send you notifications
Websites with plug-in content you started by clicking a Safari Power Saver notice

How to wipe your browsing history automatically in safari on mac.
Safari records all your web activity, so it's best to occasionally clear it with Safari's self-destruct tool. Here's how it works.
Your browser records all your web activity. Therefore, for added privacy, it's best to regularly clear your browsing history. Safari on your Mac can take care of this for you and automatically wipe your history every once in a while. Here's how to set it up.
Launch Safari on your Mac from the Launchpad or by looking it up on Spotlight .
Next, click "Safari" from the left corner of the menu bar and select "Preferences." Alternatively, you can press Cmd+comma on your keyboard to head directly into this menu.
Under the "General" tab, locate the "Remove History Items" option.
From the dropdown beside it, you can select how often Safari should delete your browsing history. You can have it cleared as frequently as every day or every year.
When you enable this setting, Safari automatically wipes logs of the websites you visit, your web searches, and more.
If you prefer reviewing your browsing history before clearing it, you can choose "Manually" from the dropdown and periodically erase your web activity from Safari yourself.
At the bottom of the "General" section, you'll also find a separate setting called "Remove download list items." With this option, you can configure Safari to automatically remove the list of files you downloaded (but not the files themselves).
You can have them wiped after a day, as soon as you quit Safari, or when the download is unsuccessful.
Enabling these won't affect your Safari browsing data on other Apple devices such as an iPhone or an iPad. As of yet, the options to automatically wipe your browsing history and the download list are not available on Safari's iOS and iPadOS apps.
There's a lot more you can do for a more secure experience on Safari, including browsing in incognito mode by default and optimizing it for maximum privacy .
You are using an outdated browser. Please upgrade your browser to improve your experience.
How to clear browsing history on Safari on iPhone or Mac
You can clear your Safari browsing history on both iOS and Mac
As tracking goes, Safari keeping your browsing history is less about privacy-busting security and more about just being useful. It's your history that means Safari remembers where to go to when you choose forward and back within a site, for instance.
It's also how Safari is able to offer you a list of sites that you regularly go to, on account of how handy it is to be able to back to them with a click. History also does keep things you may not expect, though, such as a list of items you've downloaded.
If you don't want that, though, or you're just fed up of Safari going to site addresses you haven't looked at in years, you can wipe the whole browsing history.
On a Mac, you can also wipe, for instance, just the last hour's browsing history. So if you share Safari and it's someone's special birthday coming up, you can avoid them inadvertently finding out you plan to surprise them with dance lessons.
How to clear search history on Safari on Mac
- In Safari, choose the History menu
- Select Clear History from the very bottom of the menu
- In the dialog box that appears, choose from clearing the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history
- Click on Clear History
Alternatively, within Safari you can press Command-Y and the current page will be replaced by a history list. There's a Clear History... button toward the top right.
Clicking on that gives you exactly the same dialog about choosing how far back you want to clear your browsing history. But this page does also give you one extra option — the ability to delete one specific item.
How to clear one item from Safari search history on Mac
- In Safari, press Command-Y
- From the long list, click once on a history item to select it
- Right-click to bring up a menu, then choose Delete
Alternatively, if you select one, two, or more items in the history list, you can then press the Delete key to remove them all.
That kind of precision removal is only possible on your Mac, not on iOS . However, whether it's precision or wholesale clearing of your history, though, there is a way to replicate it on iOS.
If you have set iCloud to share your Safari history, then just doing this on your Mac also removes the history from your iPhone, and iPad.
Otherwise, you're stuck with going to your iOS device. And then with clearing the entire history.
How to clear search history on iPhone
- Go to Settings on your iOS device
- Tap on Safari
- Scroll down to Clear History and Website Data
- Tap that, then tap Clear History and Data to confirm
One important thing to note is that you can't selectively remove, say, today's browsing history on the iPhone or iPad . It's all or nothing, with iOS.
What you leave behind
Clearing your history like this does remove the list of sites and pages you've visited. It does mean you can't go back to that site you read last Tuesday, not without remembering what it was and going there yourself.
What it doesn't remove, though, is the information that gets used by something like AutoFill. If you have your address, for instance, and you're used to online forms being filled out with it, you've still got that feature.
You've also still got anything you downloaded. It's purely that Safari won't keep the list of downloads.

How to delete web browsing history on Mac
Periodically cleaning out your browser’s data (such as your history, or your cache and cookies ) can help protect your privacy from snoops who want to discover what sites you’ve visited recently, or what you’ve searched for. We’ve looked at clearing your iPhone browsing history elsewhere; in this article we explain how to clear the web browsing history on your Mac, covering the four most popular Mac browsers : Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.
If you’d like to prevent your browser collecting history data in the first place, see How to use private web browsing on Mac – this is a useful feature if you’d like to hide your tracks online.
Clear history in Safari
Safari’s Clear History tool appears twice in its dropdown menus. You can click Safari > Clear History, or go for History > Clear History instead.
You can choose to clear the last hour, or all of today’s accumulated data, or today plus yesterday, or just all the data since… well, forever! Select from the dropdown list and click Clear History.
Although quick to access, the Clear History tool is badly named because it actually takes a scorched Earth approach – in addition to actual browsing history, it deletes cookies and the entire browser cache too.
Happily, Safari does offer more surgical cleaning tools that let you proceed on a site-by-site basis. It just hides these tools away – but we’re here to help.
Remove individual sites from Safari history
By clicking History > Show All History you’ll see a list of the sites you’ve visited recently; right-clicking any in the list shows a menu complete with Remove option. Alternatively, select any entry in the list and tap the Backspace or Delete key on your keyboard. Note that the Clear History button at the top right of the list displays the same global clear-up dialog box as mentioned above.
Although you can select several entries in the History list in the usual way by holding down Shift or Cmd, you can only delete them by subsequently tapping the Backspace or Delete key on your keyboard. Right-clicking won’t work in this instance.
Clear history in Chrome
View your browsing history in Chrome by selecting History > Show Full History (or using the hotkey combination Cmd + Y, although this doesn’t always seem to work).
You can remove specific entries on an individual basis: click the tickbox to the left of it, then Delete in the blue bar at the top, and confirm Remove.
If you’d prefer to delete all your history in one go, click ‘Clear browsing data’ in the lefthand list of options.
Select a time range from the dropdown menu – you can select the last hour, day, week or four-week period, or all time – and then make sure the ‘Browsing history’ tickbox is filled.
(You can delete cache and cookies at the same time if you wish, or untick them to ignore. The cache entry will tell you how much space will be saved, as well as warning that sites may load more slowly.)
Hit Clear Data to trigger the deletion.
Clear history in Firefox
Firefox offers straightforward history deletion tools too. Select History > Clear Recent History (or hit Shift + Cmd + forward delete) for the simplest method.
At the top of the dialogue box you’ll be able to choose a time range: Last Hour, Last Two Hours, Last Four Hours, Today or Everything. Then, if you click the Details chevron you can choose which forms of browsing data you wish to delete. When you’ve decided, hit Clear Now.
Delete individual sites from your Firefox history
As with the other browsers, Firefox lets you remove individual entries from your history. Click History > Show All History, and then right-click an entry and select Delete Page.
You can delete multiple entries in this way by clicking one, then holding Shift and selecting another: Firefox will highlight both entries and all the entries between them. Or use Cmd + A to select all.
And remember that you can just look at the history from this month, the last seven days etc by using the options on the left.
Clear history in Opera
Let’s do one more browser: the purists’ favourite, Opera.
Select History > Show All History from the top bar (or use the hotkey combo Shift + Cmd + H). You’ll see the full history divided into days. Hover over an entry and click the X on the right to remove it from your history.
To delete all of your history at once, click Clear Browsing Data at the top right of the history page. You can adjust the timeframe – past hour, day, week, four weeks or all time – and choose whether to clear your cookies, autofill forms and other data at the same time as the history.
Click Clear Browsing Data to wipe the selected data.

Instant Google regret? Here's how to delete your history in the Safari browser, whether you're using it to surf the web on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Key Takeaways
- Clearing your Safari history removes cookies and reduces online tracking.
- The process for deleting web history is different for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
- You can use Private Browsing Mode to prevent web history from being saved.
From accessing your bank account on a shared computer to Googling embarrassing queries, there are a number of reasons to want to clear out your search history. Deleting your history on Safari removes your trail of web browsing, but the process also does more than clear out potentially embarrassing websites.
Clearing your history will also remove associated cookies from the web browser, reducing the number of ways you are being tracked online. While clearing your web history only removes cookies from Safari and not third-party websites that already have your data, it can still be helpful to reduce online tracking. Clearing the related cache can also sometimes fix bugs.
Deleting a web history from Safari isn't a terribly complicated process, but the steps are a bit different if you are using a MacBook , iPad , or iPhone . The steps for clearing several web pages and a single website are also different. Some privacy settings can also prevent you from deleting any web history, leaving the buttons you need grayed out.
Too many Safari tabs open on your iPhone? Close them all with this trick
There are also a few tricks that can make the process simpler. For example, if you turn on iCloud for Safari, when you delete the history from your Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your phone and tablet too. If you know you want to delete your web history before you make a single click, you can use Private Browsing Mode instead.
Whether you are a murder mystery writer looking to eliminate search queries that would raise the eyebrows of any detective, or you want to reduce the number of cookies tracking you, this guide will tell you how to delete Safari history in a few simple steps.
How to delete Safari history on a Mac
Safari allows you to delete a lot of web history from a Mac or MacBook at once by allowing you to choose the dates for which you would like to erase. If you want to clear websites from the last hour, last day, last two days or all of your web history, this is the process to use.
- Open Safari
- From the top toolbar, click on History , then click Clear History.
- In the pop-up window, use the drop-down menu to select the time period you want to clear from your history.
- Click Clear History .
How to delete Safari history on an iPhone or iPad
The steps for clearing out your Safari history on an iPhone is quite different from using a Safari browser on a Mac. But, the process is the same across both iPhones and iPads, so these steps below work for both your phone and tablet.
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Safari.
- Scroll down to the Privacy & Security section and select Clear History and Website Data.
- On the next page, tap the time frame that you would like to delete the history for.

- Tap Clear History.
How to delete a single website from Safari history
Safari allows you to easily delete websites from the last hour, day, two days, or your entire web history easily. But, if you only want to remove a single website, you'll instead have to access your history, and then select the individual page to remove.
- Open a Safari browser.
- From the top toolbar, select History > Show All History. Or, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Y.
- Select the website entry that you wish to delete. If that site was not visited today, you will need to tap on the date that you visited the website to find it or use the search bar at the top.
- Right-click on the website entry and select delete.
On an iPhone or iPad:
- Tap the Bookmark icon on the bottom (it looks like an open book).
- Tap the Clock or History icon at the top of the page.
- Locate the website that you wish to delete from your history -- your history is organized by the date you visited.
- On the website you wish to delete, swipe left, then tap on the red trash icon.
How to use Bing Chat on Safari
How to use private mode in safari.
If you know that you'll want to delete the website that you are about to visit from your history, try using Private Browsing Mode instead. This mode does not save any website history, including search history and autofill information. That means you can do your online banking without going back and deleting your web history when you are done.
To use Private Browsing Mode on a Mac:
- Open Safari.
- On the top toolbar, go to File > New Private Window.
- Use this new private window for browsing. You can quickly see if a Safari browser is Private because the field to type in the URL is dark gray instead of white.
To use Private Browsing Mode on iOS:
- Tap the tab icon in the bottom left corner.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap Private (swipe to see all the toppings in this toolbar if you do not see the Private option.)
- Private browsing will have a dark gray URL field instead of white. To return to regular browsing, repeat the steps but this time swipe back to your open tabs.
How to use picture-in-picture mode in Safari on Mac
How to instantly clear your web history from multiple devices.
With iCloud , Safari can save your web browsing across all the devices that you use with your Apple ID. While that's helpful for quickly recalling a website no matter what device you first opened it with, it also syncs any deletions to the web history across your devices . That means if you delete a web page from your history on a Mac, it will automatically be deleted from your iPhone too -- as long as both devices are logged into the same Apple ID and iCloud for Safari is enabled.
iCloud for Safari can be enabled during the setup process for a new device, but it can also be turned on and off from the Settings app:
- Tap on your Apple ID or name at the top.
- Tap on iCloud.
- Under Apps Using iCloud, select Show All . (If you are running iOS 15 or earlier, you may not see the full list already instead of the Show All option, in which case you can jump to the next step.)
- Toggle on Safari from the list.
Why can't I clear my Safari history?
In some cases, the buttons that you need to tap to clear your Safari history are gray. But why can't you delete your Safari history, and how do you fix it? Here are a few common reasons why the Safari history options are grayed out:
- You've already deleted your history and there are no more websites to clear out.
- Web content restrictions are turned on. Some parental control settings prevent kids and teens from deleting their web history, while other content restrictions can also prevent you from deleting. To access the content restriction options, open the Settings app and go to Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- You are using Private Browsing Mode. This mode does not save your web history, so you have nothing to delete.

How to Clear Safari History on a Mac in 4 Simple Steps
When you visit a website, your browser records your visit in the browser history. It also saves elements like the page’s URL, text, images, and lists of IP addresses in the browser cache.
This speeds up the loading time for that website the next time you visit it. What’s more, if you ever need to find that site again, you can just look in your browser history rather than searching for it on Google.
Apple makes it easy to retrieve links from your history with Safari — if you use iCloud on your devices, you can access your history from any device signed in to your iCloud account.
Similarly, deleting your Safari history will make it disappear on all of your connected devices. You can clear the whole of your Safari history or specific parts of it for a selected period of time or for all time.
However, clearing your Safari history still leaves the cache taking up precious disk space. You need to delete your Safari cache separately on each device.
You can find out how to delete your Safari search history, cookies, and cache from a Mac with the detailed guide below. We’ll cover:
- Clearing your entire Safari history
- Deleting specific pages from your history
- Removing the cookies and cache from your Mac
- Browsing privately in Safari
Before we start One of the most popular reasons for clearing your history in browsers is that your Mac is running slow. However, it’s more effective to clean up your entire Mac with dedicated cleaning software. Download MacKeeper to remove all junk, useless apps, and duplicate files in just a couple of clicks.
- How to clear all your Safari history
You can remove your Safari history for a range of dates starting from the last hour and going up to your complete browsing history.
Here are simple steps:
1. Launch Safari . If you keep it in the Dock, simply click on the browser icon. Otherwise, go to Launchpad and find it there
2. In the menu at the top of the screen, click History
3. A drop-down menu will open. At the bottom of the menu, click Clear History
4. In the pop-up window, select the period of time for which you want to clear your Safari history
5. Click Clear History
- How to delete specific pages from your Safari history
What if you only need to delete one link from your Safari history? Luckily, there is an option on your Mac to erase particular pages rather than everything.
Here is your step-by-step guide:
- Launch Safari
- Open the History menu at the top of the screen
- Select Show All History from the drop-down menu
- Right-click on the desired page from the list that appears
- Click on Delete in the drop-down menu
- You can search for the website’s name by typing it into the search bar in the top-right corner of the pop-up window
- How to clear the cookies and cache in Safari
Cookies and cache files are essential for the optimal functioning of most websites. They allow pages to load much faster when you revisit them in the future.
Unfortunately, they can also contain a lot of personal information such as your location, username and password, language preferences, email, and other data. In this way, cookies in particular make your internet usage easily traceable.
How to delete cookies and cache in Safari:
1. Open Safari
2. Open the Safari menu at the top of the screen
3. Click Preferences
4. Go to the Privacy tab
5. Click on the Manage Website Data button
6. A window appears listing all the websites Safari is storing your cookies, cache, and other types of data for. You can delete all of them by clicking on the Remove All button, or you can select specific websites and click on the Remove button instead
Bear in mind that your browser will slow down when you delete your cache. If you’re not sure about the results, we suggest creating a backup before you start the cleanup.
How to clear the cache automatically with MacKeeper
When you visit websites, pieces of text, images, and other data downloads to your Mac. This information is called the cache and its purpose is to speed up the loading of a website on future visits.
Similarly, apps on your Mac and the system as a whole generate a cache, too.
With time, the cache piles up and starts taking up too much of your storage space, rather than just helping you browse or load apps faster.
With Safe Cleanup in MacKeeper, you can remove all types of cache data in just a few clicks, along with other junk files — leaving your Mac clean and free of junk.
We’ve created a separate article in case you want to learn more about clearing the cache on your Mac.
- How to browse privately
When you use Safari in Private mode, the usual data acquired when you visit a website isn’t saved in your browser history. Therefore, it won’t be synchronised with your other Apple devices that use the same iCloud account.
This is useful when you don’t want the history and cookies for your browsing session recorded but don’t have time to delete them manually afterwards. Take a look at our guide to learn more about how to browse in Safari Private mode .
For an even more private connection, use MacKeeper’s VPN Private Connect. This tool will help you hide your online activity and conceal what you browse while keeping your identity a secret from the websites you visit.

Navigating the digital world often leaves a trail in the form of browser history. While this history can be useful for quick access to frequently visited websites, it can also pose privacy and security risks.
If you’re a Mac user who relies on Safari as your go-to web browser, you may be wondering how to effectively delete your browsing history to protect your personal information. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the simple steps to delete Safari history on your Mac and browse the web with peace of mind.
Before We Begin
Deleting your browser history is just one method for enhancing your online privacy and security. Another option is to use MacKeeper’s Private Connect VPN, which safeguards both your personal data and your location when you’re online.
How to Clear All Safari History Manually
Clearing your Safari history manually is a straightforward process that you can accomplish in just a few steps. Doing so can protect your privacy and even speed up your browsing experience.
Here’s how to delete Safari history on your Mac manually and in one go:
- Launch the Safari application by clicking its icon in the Dock or by finding it in the Applications folder.
- Once Safari is open, navigate to the menu bar, click History , and select Clear History… from the dropdown. It’s at the bottom of the menu and you may have to scroll down.
- A dialog box will appear asking you to specify the time range for which you want to delete history. You can select last hour, today, today and yesterday, or all history.
- Select all history from the menu and click the Clear History button. This will also clear your browser cache and cookies for the specified time range.
- For the changes to take effect, close all Safari windows and relaunch the application.
How to Clear Specific Pages From Safari History
If you prefer to delete specific items rather than clear your entire history, Safari also allows you to do that. Here’s how to delete Safari history on your Mac for specific pages:
- Once Safari is open, navigate to the menu bar, click History and select Show All History .
- A window will display your entire browsing history. Simply right-click the individual site(s) you wish to remove and select Delete .
- Alternatively, you can click the Clear History button and it will open the window to select a time range and you can clear all Safari history.
Remember, clearing your history will also log you out of any websites where you’ve signed in, so you’ll need to log back in the next time you visit those sites.
How to Clear Safari History and Cookies Automatically
Automatically clearing your Safari history and cookies can be a real time-saver and adds an extra layer of privacy and security to your browsing experience. By setting this up, you won’t have to manually clear your history each time you exit Safari.
Here’s how to clear Safari history and cookies automatically on your Mac:
- Launch Safari by clicking its icon in the Dock.
- Click Safari in the menu bar at the top of the screen and select Settings .
- Select the Privacy tab and check the box for Block all cookies next to Cookies and website data.
Note that doing so might cause some websites to not work correctly.
Another way to automatically clear history and cookies on Safari is to use Private Browsing mode. To enable this, open Safari, go to the File menu, and select New Private Window .
While in this mode, Safari won’t save your browsing history or cookies.
Using Private Browsing mode or blocking all cookies can affect the functionality of some websites. You might not be able to log in or access certain features in such cases.
How to Clear Cookies and Cache in Safari
Clearing cookies and cache in Safari can improve your browsing speed, solve website issues, and enhance your privacy and security. Here’s how to clear cookies in Safari:
- Start by launching the Safari application from your Dock or your Applications folder.
- Select the Privacy tab and click the Manage Website Data button.
- Click Remove All to clear all website cookies completely.
- If you choose to remove all cookies, you’ll be prompted to confirm. Click Remove Now to proceed.
- Alternatively, you can select individual websites and tap Remove .
- Click Done when you have deleted all cache files.
To delete Safari cache on your Mac, follow these steps:
- First, you’ll need to enable the Developer menu if it isn’t already. Go to Safari in the menu bar and select Settings .
- Select the Advanced tab and check the box next to the Show Develop menu in menu bar if it is unchecked.
- Once the Develop menu is enabled, you’ll find it in the menu bar at the top of your screen. Click Develop in the menu bar and select Empty Caches from the dropdown menu.
This will clear all your Safari cache on Mac.
After you’ve cleared cookies and cache, it may be a good idea to close and relaunch Safari for the changes to take full effect.
Why Can’t You Delete Your History on Safari?
If you’re unable to delete your history on Safari, there could be several reasons for this issue. Below are some common factors and their potential solutions:
- 🚫 Restrictions or Parental Controls : If your Mac has been set up with parental controls or other user restrictions, these settings might disable the ability to clear Safari history. You would need administrative access to change these settings. Go to System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy to make changes.
- 🚹 Corrupted User Profile : Sometimes, a corrupted user profile may lead to issues with Safari, including the inability to delete the history. Create a new user profile to see if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, you may have to transition to the new profile entirely.
- 🐞 Software Glitch : Occasional glitches can also cause this issue. Quitting and reopening Safari, or restarting your computer, might solve the problem.
- 🛡️ Third-Party Software Interference : Some third-party software, like security or parental control applications, can interfere with Safari’s normal operation. Disable or uninstall the third-party software temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.
- ⌛ Outdated Safari Version : Using an outdated version of Safari may result in various operational issues, including the inability to delete history. Update Safari to the latest version via the App Store.
- ☁️ iCloud Syncing : If you’re using iCloud to sync Safari data across devices, there might be syncing issues causing the problem. Go to System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud and toggle off Safari syncing, then try to clear history again. You can toggle it back on afterward.

Tips & Tricks
Troubleshooting, how to delete specific safari history on mac.
Did you know that you can delete any specific Safari history item from the web browsers history stored on a Mac? While many Mac Safari users likely already know they can clear Safari history for the past hour, day, two days, or clear all history from the browser , far fewer users know that it’s possible to selectively delete specific browser history items from Safari on the Mac.
Removing items from Safari history is useful for many obvious reasons, whether you’d like to remove a secret from browser history, delete an embarrassing webpage visit or browsing session, or even if you want to correct an
The ability to delete specific items and history from Safari History is fairly easy, and is largely version agnostic, so as long as the Mac is vaguely new and running anything other than an ultra antiquated version of software, the version of Safari and Mac OS or Mac OS X should support specific history removal.
Do note deleting an item from Safari history on the Mac is permanent, at least until that site(s) or webpage(s) have either been visited again, or unless a backup of the Mac has been restored to the computer. You can not undo removal of Safari history items.
How to Delete Specific History from Safari on Mac
You can selectively remove any item found within Safari history on a Mac by following these instructions:
- Open the Safari web browser if you haven’t already
- Pull down the “History” menu, then select “Show All History”
- Locate the specific Safari browser history item you want to remove (either through the list view or by searching Safari history for word matches )
- Select the item you want to delete from Safari history
- Hit the “Delete” key on the Mac keyboard, or right-click and choose “Delete” from the pop-up menu
- Repeat with other items you want to remove from Safari history on the Mac
You can delete any individual search history from Safari this way.
This tip is particularly useful when combined with the Safari History Search feature, since you can find specific keywords, terms, webpages, websites, and topics within History if you want to selectively delete the history within the browser for any found occurrences.
You can also go for the drastic option of clearing all web history data in Safari from the Mac , though obviously wiping everything clean isn’t going to be targeted in the same way that deleting particular items from Safari History would be.
If you find yourself frequently wanting to delete specific Safari history items, you may be better off preemptively using Private Browsing mode in Safari for Mac , which does not leave any browser history when active.
It’s worth mentioning that whether you delete Safari history or use private browsing mode or not, your browsing sessions are not going to be truly anonymous or private because of the nature of how browsers, DNS, ISPs, and the internet in general work. While removing local history will remove traces of a website visit from a particular computer and perhaps hide the visit from yourself or another person, that local data removal has no impact on the various remote servers or the underlying infrastructure used to access websites or the internet in the first place, which separately will track all internet data like website visits and browsing sessions (and they may sell that data too). If you do want to attempt a more anonymized web browsing experience, you’d need to turn to anonymous web browsing apps like TOR or a privacy-conscious VPN service, though even those are not infallible nor perfect.
As usual, iOS users are not left out either, as you can delete specific history items from Safari on iPhone and iPad too using a similar method. And it’s worth mentioning these browser history tricks apply to most other browsers like Chrome and Firefox too, though we’re obviously focused on Safari here.

Safari is one of the most popular browsers. Millions of people all over the world use it. Apple made this browser, which is known for its easy-to-use interface, fast browsing speed, and security features. But, as with any browser, users still need to be aware of possible privacy threats.

Table of Contents
Uncovering the Secrets of Safari Browsing History
Browsing history is a list of all the websites and web pages that a person who uses a web browser has been to. This information is saved on the device that was used to browse, so the user can easily go back to websites or web pages they have already seen.
What is Stored in Safari Browsing History
Safari stores its browsing history in a database on the device. This database keeps track of the URL, title, date, and time of each site that was visited. It also has information about how often people visit each website and how long they stay there. This information can be helpful for someone who wants to quickly go back to a website they have recently visited, but it can also be a privacy concern.
How Browsing History Affects your Privacy
There are several ways that your browsing history can affect your privacy. For example, if someone uses a computer that is shared, it is easy for someone else who uses the same computer to look at their browsing history and see the websites they have visited. This can be especially scary if the person has been to websites that have private or sensitive information on them.
Some websites may also use tracking technologies like cookies to learn about how a person uses the site. This information can be used to make a profile of the person’s interests and behavior, which can then be sold to advertisers or used for targeted advertising.
Last but not least, government agencies or law enforcement can also look at your browsing history as part of an investigation. In this case, the history of what you have been looking at can be used as evidence in court or as part of an investigation into a crime.
People can protect their privacy by regularly clearing their browsing history or by using private browsing mode when they visit personal or sensitive websites. They can also use privacy-focused web browsers or add-ons that block tracking technologies and add more privacy features to their browsers.
Deleting Browsing History on Safari
Getting rid of Safari’s browsing history is an important way to protect your privacy and keep your device running smoothly. Your browsing history is a list of the websites and pages you have been to, as well as the date and time of each visit. You might not be able to delete Safari history on your iOS device for a number of reasons. Some of the most common ones are:
- Restrictions: If your device is set up to have restrictions, you might not be able to clear Safari’s history. To see if restrictions are on, go to “Settings” > “General” > “Restrictions” and make sure that “Safari” is not turned off. If that is the case, you will not be able to get rid of your history.
- iCloud Sync: If you have iCloud sync turned on for Safari, your browsing history may be shared across all of your devices. To see if iCloud sync is turned on, go to “Settings” > “Your Name” > “iCloud” and make sure that “Safari” is turned on. If so, you will need to delete your history on all of your devices to get rid of it completely.
- Private Browsing Mode: If you were using Private Browsing mode when you went to certain websites, those sites will not be saved in your history. Look for the “Private” icon in the top left corner of the Safari window to see if you are in Private Browsing mode.
- Third-Party Software: It is possible that some third-party software is making it hard for you to delete Safari’s history. For example, you might not be able to clear your history if you have parental control software. If you think this is the case, try turning off the software or uninstalling it, and then try to delete your history again.
- iOS Software Problem: Sometimes, you might not be able to delete your Safari history because of a problem with your iOS software. If you have tried all of the above steps and still can not delete your history, try restarting your device or updating to the latest version of iOS.
Tips for Maintaining Privacy while Browsing
Maintaining privacy while browsing is an important part of using the internet, especially in the modern world where personal information and online activities are valuable commodities. In this section, we will talk about three things you can do to keep your browsing private: regularly clearing your browsing history, using “incognito mode,” and installing plugins that protect your privacy.
Regularly Clearing Browsing History
Your browsing history is a list of the websites you visit, the pages you look at, and the links you click on while using the internet. A good way to protect your privacy is to clear your browsing history often. When you clear your browsing history, you get rid of all the evidence of what you did online and stop other people from seeing what you did. By clearing your browsing history, you can also free up space on your device and make your web browser run better.
To clear your browsing history, you need to go to your web browser’s settings or options. Different browsers have slightly different steps, but the main steps are the same. For example, in Google Chrome, you can click on the three dots in the upper right corner, choose “History,” and then click on “Clear browsing data.” In Mozilla Firefox, you can click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner, choose “History,” and then click on “Clear Recent History.”
Using Incognito Mode
Incognito mode, which is also called “private browsing,” is another way to keep your browsing private. When you use “incognito mode,” your web browser does not keep track of what you do online. This means that your browsing history, cookies, and cache will not be saved, and other people will not be able to see them.
Incognito mode is helpful when you want to keep your online activities private, like when you are shopping for gifts or researching sensitive topics. To use incognito mode, you have to go to your web browser’s settings or options and choose the incognito mode option. If you click on the three dots in the upper right corner of Google Chrome, you can choose “New Incognito Window.” If you click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner of Mozilla Firefox, you can choose “New Private Window.”
Installing Privacy-Focused Plugins
Plugins that focus on privacy are software tools that make your web browser’s privacy features better. To protect your privacy, they can block trackers, stop data collection, and encrypt your data. There are a lot of privacy-focused plugins for different web browsers, and they are easy to install from the store for that browser.
For instance, the Privacy Badger plugin stops third-party trackers from getting your information without your permission. The HTTPS Everywhere plugin encrypts your information so that it can not be read by others. The uBlock Origin plugin blocks ads and trackers, making your online experience and privacy better.
Final Notes
Getting rid of your Safari browsing history is easy and quick, and it can help you keep your privacy and safety online. If you follow the steps above, you will be able to get rid of all traces of your online activity, keeping your sensitive information safe. Clearing your Safari browsing history is an important part of managing your online presence, whether you are worried about privacy, want to free up space on your computer, or just want to start over.
People Also Asked
A lot of our readers have been worried about privacy and the need to clear their Safari browsing history. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we have gotten about this subject:
Can I delete specific items from my history instead of clearing everything?
Yes, you can choose what to delete from your history in Safari instead of deleting everything. To do this, go to the “History” menu, find the item you want to delete, and click “Remove” or “Delete.”
Is there a way to prevent Safari from keeping a record of my browsing history?
Use “Private Browsing” to stop Safari from keeping track of what you have been looking at. When you turn on Private Browsing, Safari will not remember the websites you visit, your search history, or any AutoFill information. To use Private Browsing, click “File” and choose “New Private Window” from the menu.
What happens to my saved passwords and autofill information when I clear my history?
When you clear your history in Safari, you will also lose any saved passwords and autofill information. But you can still find your saved passwords in the “Passwords” section of the “Settings” app, and you can get your autofill information back by putting it in again in Safari.

By following these steps to clear website data in Safari, you can take proactive measures to protect your privacy and optimize your browsing experience. This simple yet crucial practice empowers you to maintain control over the data stored by websites, ensuring that your online activities remain private and your browsing sessions operate smoothly.
Step 4: Clear Downloads History
Clearing your downloads history in Safari is an essential aspect of managing your browsing experience and maintaining privacy on your Mac. The downloads history keeps a record of files and applications you've downloaded while using the Safari browser, providing a convenient reference for your past downloads. However, over time, this history can become cluttered with outdated or unnecessary entries, potentially impacting your browsing efficiency and privacy. By clearing your downloads history, you can ensure that your browser operates smoothly and that your past downloads remain private. Follow these steps to clear your downloads history in Safari for Mac:
Access Downloads Window : After opening Safari, navigate to the "Window" option in the menu bar at the top of your screen. From the dropdown menu, select "Downloads." This will open the Downloads window, displaying a list of your recent downloads, including file names, sizes, and download dates.
Clear Downloads History : Within the Downloads window, you'll find the option to clear your downloads history. Click on the "Clear" button, typically located in the lower-right corner of the window. This action will prompt Safari to remove all entries from your downloads history, ensuring that your past downloads are no longer visible within the browser.
Confirm Clearing : Upon clicking the "Clear" button, Safari will typically display a confirmation dialog to ensure that you intend to clear your downloads history. Confirm the action by clicking "Clear" or "OK," depending on the specific dialog prompt. Safari will promptly clear your downloads history, providing a clean slate for your future downloads.
Clearing your downloads history in Safari offers several benefits, including privacy enhancement and decluttering of your browsing environment. By removing outdated or irrelevant download entries, you can maintain the confidentiality of your past downloads and prevent others from accessing this information. Additionally, clearing your downloads history can contribute to a more organized browsing experience, allowing you to focus on current and relevant downloads without the distraction of obsolete entries.
As you navigate the digital landscape, mastering the skill of clearing your downloads history empowers you to take control of your browsing environment and maintain a clutter-free experience within Safari. By following these steps, you can confidently manage your downloads history, ensuring that your past downloads remain private and your browser operates efficiently.
Step 5: Clear All History from a Specific Time Period
Clearing all history from a specific time period in Safari allows you to selectively remove browsing data, providing a tailored approach to managing your browsing history. This feature is particularly useful when you want to retain recent browsing activities while removing older history, thereby maintaining privacy and optimizing your browsing experience. By following these steps, you can effectively clear all history from a specific time period in Safari for Mac:
Access History Menu : Begin by opening Safari and accessing the History menu at the top of your screen. Click on "Show All History" to view your complete browsing history within Safari.
Select Time Range : Within the History window, navigate to the top-right corner and locate the search field. Here, you can enter a specific time range to filter your browsing history. For example, you can enter a custom date range or select predefined options such as "Today," "Yesterday," "Last 7 days," or "Last month."
Filter Browsing History : After entering the desired time range, Safari will filter your browsing history to display only the relevant entries within the specified period. This allows you to review and verify the history that will be cleared based on your selected time range.
Clear History : Once you've confirmed the filtered history based on the specific time period, proceed to clear it by selecting "Clear History" from the History menu. Safari will promptly remove all entries within the chosen time range, ensuring that your browsing history is tailored to your preferences.
Clearing all history from a specific time period offers a personalized approach to managing your browsing history, allowing you to maintain privacy while retaining recent activities. How to Delete an Individual Website from Safari’s History instead of All Websites
It is easy to clear the history from Safari on iPhone, iPad or Mac. When you tap the Clear History and Website Data in Settings on your iPhone, all of your history will be gone. However, clearing all of the history, cookies and cache may not be ideal. For example, this creates a lot of login headaches, as you won’t be able to automatically log in to websites, like when you want to check your email. You will have to re-enter your username and password and probably complete other authentication steps, which may be annoying.
What if you just want to remove a few websites from your history? Sometimes, you may not want to see a particular website appear as a suggestion when you enter a URL in Safari. Or you may have accidentally visited a questionable website, and you want to remove that from Safari. The good news is that you can just remove that website while keeping all of your other history.
Safari keeps a record of what URLs you visit to give you a history list, which makes it easy to go back to previously visited pages. If you browse the web in Private Mode, Safari does not record your history. Lastly, when you clear the history, it won’t affect your autofill information.
Remove a website from History in Safari on iPhone or iPad
- Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Bookmarks button in the toolbar at the bottom, which looks like an open book.
- Tap the History tab, which looks like a clock.
- From the bottom-left corner, tap Edit . Then, select the websites you want to remove. You probably have a lot of websites. You can scroll down to reveal the search bar, which you can use to find the websites you want to delete.
- Then tap the red Delete button, and the selected websites will be deleted. Tap Done when you are done.
Remove a website from your history on Mac
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- From the top menu bar, click History and Show All History .
- All of your history will show up. Again, scroll up or down to find the website you want to delete. You can also use the search field, which is located at the top-right of your screen.
- Once you find the website, right-click (or Control -click) it and select Delete . You can choose multiple websites by selecting the websites while pressing the Command key.
You should note that if you are using multiple devices with the same Apple ID and if iCloud is enabled for Safari, then deleting a history item on one device means your deletion will sync across your other devices.
What about cookies and cache
Please note that when you delete a website’s history, its cache and cookies won’t be deleted. If you want to delete an individual website’s cookies and cache, follow these steps:
- On iPhone and iPad : Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data . You can use the search field to find the website you would like to delete, and once you find it, swipe left and tap Delete .
- On Mac : In Safari, click Safari > Settings > Privacy , then click the Manage Website Data button. Using the search field, find the website and then click Remove .
