The one thing I couldn’t wait to see when I moved to Dubai in 2005 was desert. And as a visitor, I’m sure it’s the same for you… the desert sounds sooo exotic right! So you’ll not only want to see the massive skyscrapers and impressive architecture but also some of the natural views. Well don’t worry, because it doesn’t take long as you drive from the city, till you see the rolling sand dunes. And it’s awesome! The colour of the sand dunes become increasingly redder the further you drive from the coastline.

🇦🇪 To say the sand dunes are impressive is an understatement. They are stunning, and a desert safari is the best way to experience them. Trust me when I say, you mustn’t leave Dubai without trying it!

The Best Time to Book a Dubai Desert Safari

A desert safari can be organized at any time during the year and there are some amazing discounts in the summer months of July and August . But that’s for good reason. Let’s be honest… it isn’t the most comfortable of experiences to visit the desert in the peak of summer. It’s doable, but you’ll likely feel a little sweaty. But we’ve done it, and if this is your only chance, then I say go for it! The chance may not return.

What to Wear

As with any place you visit in Dubai, you’ll see all types travellers. Some people will cover up and some will show more skin than is appropriate. When it comes to a desert safari it doesn’t matter too much, just dress yourself for comfort. Out of respect, I always like to keep my shoulders covered and when it’s hot you’ll want to go with a light loose-fitting option. Just keep in mind you’ll probably be riding a camel so you’ll want to be practically dressed for such an occasion.

Alternatively, it does get cooler in the desert during the winter months, from November through till February. So be prepared, bring a pashmina or sweater to put on for later in the evening.

A desert safari generally runs from the late afternoon into the evening. You can expect to be collected between 3pm and 4pm and following a full afternoon and evening of entertainment you’ll be returned to your accommodation by 10pm.

What Does a Desert Safari in Dubai Cost

The price varies depending on the organisation that you go with. But this is an experience you don’t want to go too cheap on. I recommend finding a mid-range priced desert safari is best. The cheaper ones we have experienced are cheap for a reason and the desert safari was less memorable. The mid-range to more expensive desert safaris, quite simply put, provide a better product.

Furthermore, over the years the ever-growing list of desert safari providers has meant that quality has notably changed. The increase in tours has also made it overwhelming in finding the right one… am I right?!

However, we’ve done the research for you. Read on to the end for the best Dubai desert safari for every budget. Our recommendations include big discounts… so make sure you go through our links for the best deals in town.

What is Included

You’ll be very well looked after on the tour. All refreshments and a BBQ dinner are provided within the package fee, along with pickup and drop-off to your accommodation. The drivers are always good fun for a chat. The 4x4s are often Toyota Landcruisers, with one seat available in the front, three in the middle and room for two in the back.

Children from two or three years and above can join in the fun, but you should contact the tour provider to make arrangements separately for this.

Insider tip: try and get a seat at the front of the 4×4. The closer you get to the front the more adrenaline fuelled the dune bashing will be. But also, the further towards the back of the 4×4, you may be more likely to experience some car sickness. Trust me… you get thrown around.

All activities mentioned below are included in the desert safari package, usually with the exception of dune buggy or motor bike rides, if they are available.

🚨 Update 2023 : Many tour providers have now started charging extra for activities such as shisha and camel riding. Particularly the cheaper tours. Therefore I stress… read the fine print of the tour package you choose before you hit that purchase button!

The Experience of a Dubai Desert Safari

Below are a list of the activities normally included within the better quality desert safaris in Dubai.

Dune Bashing

As I said earlier the rolling red dunes are incredible and a 4×4 bash around the dunes is so much FUN! I’m not a huge adrenaline junky, but I make an exception for dune bashing (the name given to this crazy fun activity). The driver arrives at the base of the dunes, lets air out of the tyres and off you go. As you boost it to the top of the dune and slide down the other side, it kind of feels like gliding through thick butter. And just at the point it feels like the driver has lost control he spins the wheel and rights the 4×4. As I say… SO MUCH FUN!

🌅 Just in time for sunset the driver arrives at the perfect spot to catch the sun disappear. Here you have the opportunity to jump out and take in the view. Soak it up, as it’s a pretty unique experience.

Then when the sun has set and the dune bashing is done, it’s time to head to the bedouin camp for entertainment and dinner.

Camel Riding

Take a camel ride! Do it, no questions asked. Because I can tell you there is nothing quite like it. Get your balance as the camel rises from the ground, he throws you forward then backward as he moves his bulk to stand. This is a SUPER touristy experience but hey… when in Dubai, you ride a camel!

Dune Boarding

Once again, strap that board on and give it a go. Whether you’ve boarded before or not, it isn’t super fast and what’s the worst that can happen if you come off. You’ll just end up with super fine desert sand in all the most annoying places. Nothing major right?!

In a nutshell, this is the Middle Eastern and Indian practice of painting a natural ink in beautiful patterns on wrists and hands. It is left to dry for about 30 minutes, which then leaves a stained pattern in its place. Henna is pretty and a nice thing to try on a desert safari.

Shisha Smoking

The hookah pipes are locally referred to as shisha. They are filled with a moist fruit flavoured tobacco and are actually pretty fun to try… and I’m not a smoker. Flavours such as double apple or grape with mint are popular and pretty tasty.

Once again, shisha is a local experience and very much embedded in local culture. Give it a try if it’s on offer as you probably won’t get another chance to smoke like this in the desert ever again.

Belly Dancing

This is always the cringy part of the evening for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the entertainment and the dancers are obviously very talented. But then they bring up the unsuspecting tourist and have them join in with the belly dancing.

💃 Avoid eye-contact and don’t sit too close to the front if you don’t want to be singled out as that person. However, if you love that kind of thing then you put that hand up!

To end the evening there is a fantastic BBQ spread, normally complete with breads, hummus, tabouleh, salads, rice and meat. The food is buffet style so you can go up for more, and you probably will because the food is super tasty.

Soft beverages are generally included in the package, with house beverages available for an extra cost.

The Extras on a Desert Safari

It’s often practice to pull up to a small shop before the dune bashing begins. A place where all the 4x4s stop to meet before the experience really begins. Be warned, these little shops are extremely expensive, they are somewhat of a tourist trap. Instead bring water with you!

Photos and Videos

Often photographers and videographers will be roaming around during the afternoon and evening. They will collect footage which they then put together to sell you at the end of the night.

Insider tip: you can get it at a steal if you say no and wait until just before you leave, as they’ll often significantly discount their prices.

Be aware also that you should clarify before having a falcon thrust into your hand if the experience is a paid one or not. I’m not sure if this practice is still tried, but often in Dubai this is a common situation.

Dune Buggy & Quad Bikes

There are often opportunities to take buggy rides or quad bike rides at the meeting point before the dune bashing begins or at the bedouin camp. It’s a token experience and you’ll pay extra for this.

It’s always a courtesy to tip the driver at the end of your desert safari. For a family, anything between 50-100 dirhams is fair based on your enjoyment of the experience of course.

Okay so now we get to the fun stuff… who to book with. Who is the best out there. I’ve narrowed down three choices for you based on price and experience so all you have to do is select the one that best suits your budget.

Lahbab Red Dunes – Budget Option

💸 If you’re after the cheapest then click here – At around 100 dirhams this desert safari comes at a steal from Cobone.

These guys are going to tick the desert safari box in that you’ll get to say, hey yes I’ve been there done that. They are the cheapest option here, but if you are travelling as a large family this will likely suit you just fine! What’s even better is that this price is discounted through Cobone , which is one of the best platforms for picking up a bargain in Dubai. We use Cobone and if you want to see Dubai on a budget then I recommend you use them too!

I will also mention here that you can book even cheaper still, but honestly I leave them off my list for a reason. Too budget and you loose the reason behind taking this adventure.

NOTE: I must point out that I myself would definitely choose the next tour provider, but understand that from a budget stand point that sometimes finances win out. And so my recommendations of Lahbab Red Dunes are the best option at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Oceanair Travels – Mid Range

Oceanair come in with two choices, the first is the premium option – a 6 to 7 hour desert safari around 250 dirhams. While the second half-day option is 3 to 4 hours at 120 dirhams. (Prices are accurate to the time of writing.)

This highly recommended desert safari comes through Get Your Guide as an original tour. This means they rate high on the trust factor given that they are true, tried and tested. They are the most frequently booked safari, with the highest reviews. For price, the options are midrange to high, and so they are perfect if you are looking for something a step up from budget.

Dubai Desert Safari

One of the most authentic ways of experiencing the culture of the Emirates is to escape to the desert. A classic Dubai desert safari usually includes several activities in a day, half-day or evening safari tour.

Activities can include camel riding, dune bashing in a 4WD, quad biking over sand dunes, soaring over the desert in a hot air balloon, holding a falcon or camping under the stars.

Going on a desert safari is one of the most fun things to do in Dubai.

As we drive into the desert, Dubai’s glitzy resorts, private canal developments, cranes and skyscrapers disappear in the rear-vision mirror of our four-wheel-drive giving way to pancake-flat desert plains as far as our eyes can see.

I have signed up for a four-wheel Dubai dune bashing trip into the desert.

Our driver, Roy, is from Hyderabad in India.

“This was what Dubai looked like once,” he says waving his hand at the vast expanse of sand.

In 1833, the Maktoum family led the Bani Yas tribe out of the desert to settle at the mouth of the creek.

As the creek was a natural harbour, Dubai quickly became a trading port as well as a centre for fishing and pearling.

Then the discovery of oil in 1966 changed the lives of the tribes forever.

Oil money poured in and the sheikhs used their new-found wealth to build schools, hospitals, roads and a modern telecommunications network.

The largest man-made harbour in the world was constructed in Jebel Ali, and a trade zone with business and tax incentives was created around the port.

Dubai is now a metropolis of gleaming skyscrapers which continues to push the boundaries with its reinvention of the concept of luxury.

One of the impressive developments in Dubai is a man-made island called Palm Jumeirah, where the recently opened mega spectacular Atlantis dazzles with 17ha of water-themed amusement park facilities, a marine habitat, accommodation and restaurants.

Another impressive development is Green Planet Dubai , which is a green biodome recreation of a rainforest environment on a scale that is unique.

Although Dubai’s glitz and glamour is captivating, a trip into the desert offers an insight into Dubai’s Bedouin roots.

Desert safaris in Dubai can cost anywhere from $50 for a basic dune bashing tour in a 4WD to a few hundred dollars for a balloon flight. If you’re on a budget here’s an excellent list of free things to do in Dubai .

Only 40 years ago, the city was a desert backwater, with sand, mud huts and Bedouin tents.

Back then, the current ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, was only a young boy.

45km from Dubai city, we drive into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which was recently accepted as a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s global environmental organisation and leading authority on conservation and sustainable development.

The reserve operates as a national park with the aim of protecting Dubai’s desert landscape along with its many indigenous plant and animal species.

A small section of the reserve is set aside for desert activities like sand skiing, camel treks, horse riding and dune driving.

As we enter the reserve, Roy gets out of the vehicle to let some air out of the tyres for a smooth ride on the soft sand.

Then we’re off and speeding towards the dunes.

He steers the vehicle up a steep, 40 meter-high sand dune, pausing at the top.

“We’re going down this?” I squeak.

“Don’t worry, I will be gentle with you,” says Roy chuckling.

Before I can protest, he takes his foot off the breaks and we slide down the dune.

My stomach drops through the floor as I hang on to the door handle screaming.

For those who like roller coaster rides, dune bashing is a lot of fun.

The only difference is you’re at the total mercy of the driver but Roy reassures us that he’s never had an accident.

Several other climb-and-slide experiences follow, lasting a total of about 45 minutes.

I feel like I’m in a ship at sea being tossed by the waves in an ocean of sand.

As far as I can see there are no landmarks, roads or signs but Roy has driven through this terrain countless times and seems to know which way to go.

Roy tells us we’re looking for a convoy of 13 other dune-bashing vehicles, which have started before us.

After being tossed up and down several sand dunes, the convoy is still nowhere in sight.

At one point I’m sure we must be lost but there’s nothing else to do except sit back and enjoy the ride.

Finally, the vehicles appear like dots in the distance, swirls of dust clouds puffing around their tyres.

We stop at the crest of a dune to watch the sunset.

The fiery yellow sun washes the sky with a magnificent orange hue, slowly sinking behind the folds of sand.

The picture is surreal and the silence is eerie.

All the vehicles have their engines switched off as everyone marvels at the setting sun.

On our way to dinner, we stop at a camel enclosure.

Even though life in Dubai is no longer nomadic, camels, which were once the ships of the desert, now replaced by four-wheel drives, continue to play an important role in Bedouin culture.

Camel racing is a popular sport and the UAE has 15 racetracks across the country with spacious modern stadiums.

Each year, over 17,000 camels from the oil-rich Gulf countries — the United Arab Emirates , Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain — are registered for a camel beauty contest which takes place over two weeks in the UAE’s Western desert.

Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the son of Dubai’s ruler Sheik Mohammed and his heir apparent, bought 16 camels for US$4.5 million including one which the sheikh paid US$2.7 million for.

We end our evening in a traditional Bedouin camp, eating crossed-legged on the carpeted sand floor while a whirling dervish, from the mystical Sufi Islam sect originating in Turkey, entertains us with his frenetic whirling dance.

We ride camels outside the camp, sip Arabic coffee and nibble on fresh dates.

The longest queues are for the henna artist.

At the end of the evening, we puff dizzily on a shisha pipe with Roy.

As the apple and cinnamon tobacco in the pipe takes effect, we recount our action-packed adventure driving on the dunes.

A Dubai desert safari is an experience that any visitor to Dubai should not miss.

“Next time I come back to Dubai, I want to sit in the driver’s seat,” I say with bravado.

I make Roy promise to teach me to drive on the dunes. “I’m up for it if you are,” he replies grinning from ear to ear.

We shake hands and seal our pact with another puff of the shisha pipe.

Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

As with the first tour, this safari offers a couple of customization options. Those include upgrading from a shared tour to a private tour and adding quad biking if you wish.

These buggies accommodate one or two passengers so you can book this activity as either a solo driver or as a duo. The driver must be aged 16 or over and an adult over the age of 16 needs to accompany those between the age of 10 and 15.

There are two time durations available. However, regardless of whether you book the 4 or 6-hour tour the total drive time is 50 minutes. Both tours also include the provision to try sandboarding and take a short camel ride.

Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr (formerly Roda Links Al Nasr) features a restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a shared lounge in Dubai. Featuring family rooms, this property also provides guests with a sun terrace. Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr offers a continental or buffet breakfast.

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.

I don't smoke, but my husband does. I wear abaya as a practicing muslim, is it appropriate for me to accompany him or would that be strange?

Your trip to Dubai isn’t done until you’ve experienced the Premium Evening Desert Safari. The safari takes you deep into the desert where you become one with the desolation of the vast stretch of sand dunes all around you. With many interesting activities to spice things up, you are sure to enjoy every moment of the exotic desert safari.

Things are set rolling with your pick-up from a hotel or any other accommodation located centrally in Dubai. Pick-ups are arranged from Sharjah as well only if it’s available then. You are picked up in a powerful 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser in the afternoon and you set off for the desert which you reach in 30 to 45 minutes.

After you reach the land of sand dunes, it’s a fun time! You go Dune Bashing as you are taken on an adrenaline-pumping ride in the 4×4 Land Cruiser that zooms up and down the slopes of the dunes. It’s an unforgettable experience that nothing in this world can match. The ride is halted for a while so you can capture some exotic vistas of the desert with your camera.

After the dune bashing is done, you are ushered into a camp inspired by the Bedouin way of life. You are served refreshments that include coffee, dates, and juices. Things come alive at the camp when a Tanura performer takes the stage. This is followed by a mesmerizing belly dance show that just takes your breath away. The day draws to a close with the serving of a buffet dinner that includes mouthwatering vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

A portion of your desert safari fee is contributed towards local conservation in Dubai.
Pick-up from Dubai hotels is included and will be in a shared, air-conditioned vehicle (unless booked otherwise). We can pick you up from the nearest hotel if you live in a private residence unless a private car is booked.
As the desert can get quite warm during the day all year round, we suggest bringing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and cool, comfortable clothes. For desert safaris in the winter (November to March), we recommend bringing something warm to wear for the evening.

Children between the age of 5-11 years will be charged at a child’s rate.
A private car booking is required if travelling with children under five years old.
This safari includes a traditional dinner; however, please inform us of any dietary requirements or allergies when booking. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, kosher-style, gluten-free.
Bathroom facilities are available at the camp.
The nature drive is not recommended for guests more than six months pregnant.
Some vehicles can accommodate up to ten guests.
We restrict numbers to 75-100 guests in our very spacious camps for our guests' comfort.

For room allocation requests, please reach out to our Experience Consultants as rooms have different capacities and will be assigned automatically for group bookings.
Please take into account that we are an eco-friendly desert operator and this is an immersive nature experience. Although rare, there may be some harmless insects at our desert camps. Regular pest control are conducted at our premises, however, we strive to protect the desert ecosystem as much as possible.
If you booked a shared vehicle, we can accommodate one overnight backpack or carry-on per guest (not exceeding 50cm in height). Please leave big luggage pieces at your hotel.

Enjoy a restful sleep with no sounds or lights to interrupt as the camp's power gets switched off from 11:00 PM - 06:00 AM.

Booked this trip based on previous reviews and I wasn’t disappointed. From pick up to the various stops we made everything was seamless. The Desert Safari was exhilarating and frightening at the same time but we felt safe with our driver Naveed. He manoeuvred the car like he was driving on a flat road! He also was very gracious and took some lovely shots of my mum and I. The bbq dinner was lovely, good quality food and drinks included. If you wanted alcohol then you had to pay extra. The performers were also fabulous and you could have henna done if you wanted to. We ended the night having a camel ride which was great, always wanted to it! Then headed back to our hotel in a nice spacious suv. All in all I recommend doing this trip and hopefully you get Naveed as your guide!

Our guide ABBAS was the best. He picked us up from the hotel and took us around on the dunes , clicked potos of us in the sunset and back home at the end of the evening.

We had a fantastic afternoon in the desert, first with some dune bashing and then with a wonderful evening at the Bedouin camp. Dinner was great, the show was very enjoyable and we smoked some Shisha and had some henné tattoo.

Sure: your hotel will probably have a concierge service or a travel agent they work with that will be able to book the desert safari for you – but the few times I enquired (I was curious as to how much it would cost!) the prices they quoted were an absolute rip off!
