Car advice put simply.

Dodge Journey (2008-2020) firing order — diagram & guide

A man is working on a car engine.

Ever since it came out in 2008, the Dodge Journey has been one of the favorite commercial options for drivers looking for a mid-size crossover vehicle. It’s been popular worldwide and even sold as a rebadged Fiat Freemont in Europe, and the wide application of this model can be attributed to its reliable engines.

While that’s something that draws drivers in when buying one, it’s a different story to maintain the car’s engine as it’s supposed to be maintained. So, this guide on the Dodge Journey (2008-2020) firing order might help you get a sense of how you can check the engine and its cylinders yourself without professional help to avoid misfires and similar issues.

First-generation Dodge Journey (2008-2020) firing order

Since the Journey has only been produced in a single generation, we’ll be focusing on all the engines in this generation model along with the facelift model that started in 2011. All the Journey models featured optional four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines along with a 2.0L diesel option, so let’s see how these compare when it comes to the firing order.

Dodge Journey 2.4L firing order

A white tesla sports car with four numbers on it.

The Dodge Journey 2.4L firing order is 1-3-4-2 which is a common pattern of a four-cylinder engine made by Dodge. It also uses the common left-to-right cylinder alignment when you look at the engine’s cylinders as the first one is on the left side of the engine, with cylinders 2, 3, and 4 spreading to the right.

Dodge Journey 2.7L firing order

A white tesla car with blue numbers on it.

For our next engine, we’ve got the first V6 used in a Journey and it’s the 2.7L V6 made together with Chrysler . So, we’ll tell you right off the bat that the Dodge Journey 2.7L firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 and this is the same firing order used for all the V6 engines included as options for this model.

However, there’s one major difference between various Dodge V6 engines since not all of them feature the same cylinder alignment. For instance, this engine is a longitudinal V6 so there’s a passenger’s cylinder bank with cylinders 1, 3, and 5, and the driver’s side cylinder bank with cylinder numbers 2, 4, and 6.

Still, it’s not the same for all the engines offered, so even though all the V6 options feature the same firing order, the cylinders are not positioned in the same way.

Dodge Journey 3.5L firing order

A white tesla model s car with blue numbers on it.

To support our previous statement, the 3.5-liter V6 is pretty similar to the 2.7L engine as it’s also a longitudinal V6. It means that the Dodge Journey 3.5L firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 as well and the cylinders are arranged in the exact same way.

So, cylinder number one is on the passenger’s side of the engine along with cylinders 3 and 5 looking at it front to rear. Cylinders 2, 4, and 6 are on the driver’s side also front to rear.

Dodge Journey 3.6L firing order

A white tesla model s car with blue numbers on it.

As the final V6 opinion for the Journey model, we have the 3.6L engine with the firing order 1-2-3-4-5-6 once again. This one features the exact same cylinder configuration as the 3.5-liter one, so the cylinders 1, 3, and 5 are on the passenger’s side, with cylinders 2, 4, and 6 being on the driver’s side.

Dodge Journey 2.0L diesel firing order

A white tesla car with four numbers on it.

After all the V6 engines, we finally reached an exception in the Dodge Journey lineup in the form of a 2.0-liter diesel engine . This one is a bit different since it has a firing order 1-3-4-2 and the cylinders are arranged from the first one on the left side to the fourth one on the right side.

However, this engine should be differentiated from the 2.4-liter petrol engine since even though they share the firing order and cylinder number, this one is a diesel. So, it doesn’t have spark plugs and it requires slightly different maintenance in general to keep it properly running.

So, now that you’ve gone through our guide on Dodge Journey firing order and cylinder layouts of the different engines, you should be able to do some DIY maintenance and keep the engine running smoothly.

We hope you’ll be able to use the firing order for your specific Journey engine when needed, but if you apply some basic upkeep and strictly follow the user’s manual, you hopefully won’t have to tamper with the engine too often.

I have had replace almost everything on this Dodge Ram 1500 3.6, I replaced PCV valve, oil and coolant housing, all six spark plugs and coils, I take it into AutoZone last week and put it on a machine they told me number 5 spark plug is misfiring I replace that last week and this week something happens again and now they gave me a print out and it say’s 5 is misfiring every week it is something different, I am so sick and tired of this truck already.

So tell me why is your firing order confusing? why is there an 8 on your firing order when there is 6 spark plugs.

' src=

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful.

Dodge 3.6L Firing Order Explained (With Example)

dodge 3.6l firing order

Over the years, the 3.6L engine has become extremely popular among many drivers who like to have solid horsepower and incredible torque. This article will provide a detailed breakdown of the Dodge 3.6L firing order.

What Is the Firing Order of the Dodge 3.6L Engine?

The firing order of the Dodge 3.6L engine is 1-2-3-4-5-6. The passenger’s side front to back comes with sequence 2-4-6, while the driver’s side front to back sequence is 1-3-5. The sequence on the coil pack from the passenger’s side to the driver’s side is 5-2-3-6-4-1.

You can determine the firing order of your Dodge 3.6L by looking up the manufacturer’s documentation for your specific model. Most of the time, how the spark plugs are labeled is usually the correct order for ignition.

However, the firing order may be indicated by color codes on the distributor cap in some vehicles . These colors indicate a specific cylinder on the engine.

For instance, red indicates the first cylinder, blue means the second one, and yellow indicates the third cylinder.

Manufacturers can also use numbers to indicate cylinders. For example, 1 marks the first cylinder, 2 shows the second cylinder, 3 indicates the third cylinder, etc.

But, once you purchase a vehicle, manufacturers will indicate the firing order on the owner’s manual. Therefore, you can simply follow the instructions listed to know the firing order of your Dodge 3.6L engine. Later on, you’ll need this information when you decide to rebuild your engine.

What Do You Mean By Firing Order?

An engine’s firing order is the sequence of power distribution in every cylinder in a multi-cylinder reciprocating engine. For a diesel engine , the firing order corresponds to the sequence of fuel injection, while on a petrol/gasoline engine , the firing order corresponds to the sequence in which the spark plugs spark.

When car manufacturers design engines, they have to choose an appropriate firing order to reduce vibration, guarantee smooth running and enhance user comfort. When it comes to radial engines, firing order follows a specific pattern since the firing impulses have to follow the cranks’ motion.

Even though the firing order of an inline engine varies a lot, it is designed to ensure the cylinders and the crankshaft fire in an evenly distributed manner. Generally, firing order affects the symmetry of your vehicle’s engine’s power output, sound, and vibration.

This explains why cylinders don’t fire in a 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence, as it can easily deform or even break the crankshaft. All cylinders need shuffling so that they create balance in the engine. As a result, no specific practice is used for numbering cylinders in V-type engines.

The following are the most common firing orders:

  • Two-cylinder engines: These engine cylinders can either fire simultaneously or one after the other.
  • Straight-3 engines: The firing order is usually 1-2-3 or 1-3-2. There isn’t a significant difference between the two.
  • Straight-4 engines: These engines usually use a 1-3-4-2 firing order. But there are also some engines that use a 1-2-4-3 firing order.
  • Straight-5 engines: These engines use a 1-2-4-5-3 firing order which is meant to reduce vibration from the rocking couple.
  • Straight-6 engines: They usually use a 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order meant to create a perfect primary and secondary balance.
  • V6 engines: The engines with a 90º angle between the cylinders usually use a firing order of R1-L2-R2-L3-L1-R3.They can also use R1-L3-R3-L2-R2-L1. On the other hand, V6 engines with a 60º angle between the cylinders usually use a firing order of R1-L1-R2-L2-R3-L3.
  • Flat-6 engines: These engines use a firing order of R1-L3-R2-L1-R3-L2 or R1-L2-R3-L1-R2-L3.
  • V8 engines: They use different firing orders.
  • V10 engines: These engines use a firing order of R1-L1-R5-L5-R2-L2-R3-L3-R4-L4 or R1-L5-R5-L2-R2-L3-R3-L4-R4-L1.
  • V12 engines use a variety of firing orders.

Generally, as the number of cylinders in an engine increases, so do the possible firing order combinations.

How Do I Know If the Firing Order Is Properly Placed in a Dodge 3.6L Engine?

When the firing order of the Dodge 3.6L is appropriately placed, the engine will run smoothly without any problems. Additionally, the proper firing order will ensure there is even fuel distribution throughout the engine. This results in a good fuel economy.

The following are common signs that the firing order in your Dodge 3.6L engine isn’t placed properly:

  • Rattling and pinging sound coming from the engine
  • Hard starting engine
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Visible damage to the catalytic converter

Here are the steps to follow to correct the firing order or your Dodge 3.6L engine:

  • Buy a repair manual for your specific Dodge make and mode. You can find these manuals online or at the nearby auto parts store. In this manual, you’ll find a diagram of the spark plug wires and firing order.
  • Locate the distributor rotor and determine which way it turns. You can do this by removing the distributor cap, which is located at the top or front of the engine.
  • Refer to the repair manual to locate the number one cylinder on the 3.6L engine. Most of the time, this cylinder is indicated using a mark.
  • Connect the spark plugs one at a time based on whether your distributor rotor runs clockwise or anticlockwise. This should take approximately two minutes if you have the right repair manual.
  • Compare the spark plugs on the engine with the manual’s firing order. Ensure that every wire is connected to the proper distributor terminal.

What If the Firing Order Is Not Sequenced Properly in Your Dodge 3.6L Engine?

The firing order of your engine’s cylinders usually determines its performance. If the firing order is not appropriately sequenced in your Dodge 3.6L engine, it’s likely that it won’t run as smoothly as you’d have hoped. Sometimes, wrongly placed spark plugs will cause engine misfires. The unburned fuel will then drip down to the exhaust and damage the oxygen sensors after a while.

If more than two spark plugs are placed incorrectly, your vehicle may not start at all, and if it does, it will run roughly due to the improper alignment of air and fuel combustion. If you drive the vehicle and the firing is not sequenced correctly, you risk damaging expensive valves. Therefore, it may be best to fix your engine’s firing order before driving.

Importance of Firing Order

A properly sequenced firing order comes with several benefits, including:

  • It minimizes engine vibration
  • It enhances engine balancing
  • It contributes to an even flow of power
  • It increases engine cooling
  • It leads to a decreased back pressure

Factors That Influence the Firing Order of the Dodge 3.6L Engine

There are several factors that influence the resulting firing order of your Dodge 3.6L engine. They include:

  • The molecular structure of the fuel
  • Spark timing
  • The air-fuel ratio
  • The temperature of self-ignition
  • The temperature of the combustion wall chamber
  • Spark intensity and duration
  • The effect of high temperature and resulting pressure after compression
  • The rate of burning

Does Firing Order Affect the Sound of the Engine?

Firing order doesn’t necessarily affect the sound your engine makes. However, it affects the sound made by the mechanical anger.

On the bottom of the auto transmission there is a belly pan, this pan must be removed to drain the fluid out of the transmission and replace the internal fluid filter. So you will need a large drain pan to catch the fluid and a floor jack to raise the van and safety stands to support it while you remove the bolts that hold the pan on, there is no drain plug so this is a VERY messy job. Clean off the old gasket completely, use no sealer and use a high quality trans pan gasket, the dealer is best or you will have leakage problems, tighten the bolts to 12-14 pounds of torque with a torque wrench, this is very important.

The alternator fuse has nothing to do with that . If starter solenoid is just clicking an you have a new battery it's more then likely battery cables or connections . To test the starter circuit you need to do voltage drop testing . The alternator doesn't start working till the vehicle starts an is running . Starter Voltage Drop

Dodge 3.6 Firing Order

The firing order of an engine refers to the sequence in which the cylinders ignite. For Dodge’s 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, it follows a specific pattern:

However, this doesn’t mean that cylinder one fires first and then two, three, four etc sequentially. The actual firing order is:

1 – 2 – 3 -4 -5 -6

This means that after cylinder one ignites, instead of moving to cylinder two next as you might expect from the naming convention used for the cylinders, it actually jumps around based on precise engineering calculations intended to optimize engine performance.

Here’s a simple table representation of Dodge’s Pentastar V6 engine’s firing order:

  • Smooth and Stable Engine Operation : A properly maintained firing order reduces vibrations and noise, resulting in smoother operation.
  • Longevity : Correct ignition sequence can prevent unnecessary wear on engine parts, extending their lifespan.

Here’s a comparison table illustrating the differences between maintaining proper firing order vs not.

  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions when dealing with engine modifications or maintenance.
  • Regularly check spark plug conditions as they play a critical role in maintaining the exact timing of combustion events.
  • If you notice unusual sounds or reduced performance from your vehicle, consider checking if it might be an issue related to incorrect firing sequence.

Remember: Ignoring these signs may lead to more serious issues down the road!

Troubleshooting: Signs of Incorrect Firing Order in a Dodge 3.6 Engine:

When the firing order is wrong in your Dodge 3.6 engine, you’ll notice several signs:

  • Engine Misfires : This happens when one cylinder isn’t firing correctly or at all.
  • Rough Idle : The car shakes and vibrates more than usual.
  • Reduced Power & Acceleration : The vehicle doesn’t respond as it should when pushing down on the gas pedal.

Here’s how to diagnose these issues:

  • Do an engine check with a scanner tool for any error codes related to misfires.
  • Listen for unusual sounds like knocking or pinging from the engine.

Remember that troubleshooting is just a starting point towards fixing problems with your Dodge 3.6 engine’s firing order. Always consult with a professional mechanic if unsure about what steps to take next.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

dodge journey 2010 firing order

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Dodge Journey P0302: Cylinder 2 – Misfire (Causes + How to Fix)

P0302 in the Dodge Journey is a common OBD II trouble code. It indicates that your vehicle’s second cylinder has a misfire.

P0302 is a real drivability concern and should be dealt with right away. If it’s bad enough to cause your Journey’s check engine light to come on, you shouldn’t drive your vehicle at all.

Dodge Journey P0302

Repairing P0302 should be considered a high priority. Unlike a lot of the OBDII codes, this code has to do directly with engine combustion. It also can cost money to ignore it, since driving with a misfire can damage the Journey’s catalytic converter.

The most common fix for P0302 is to replace the spark plugs, coil packs, or (if equipped) plug wires.

Table of Contents:

P0302 + Other Codes

Common questions, p0302 meaning:  cylinder 2- misfire detected.

P0302 is a cylinder-specific misfire code, meaning it’s only the second cylinder that has a misfire. But, where is the second cylinder?

On “V” configuration engines, it’ll usually be the first cylinder on the head further back from the front of the engine.  A quick google image search will confirm the correct cylinder (include your Journey’s model year and engine type).

Misfire Detected

In order for an engine to burn fuel efficiently, each cylinder needs:

P0302 Definition Dodge Journey

  • Fuel – In the right quantity (around 14.7 parts air to one part fuel).
  • Air – It needs to be metered by your Journey’s mass air flow sensor or MAP sensor, so the powertrain control module (PCM) knows exactly how much air to let into the combustion chamber.
  • Spark – The spark plug needs to fire at the right time and at the right temperature.
  • Compression – The air-fuel mixture must be compressed during the engine’s power stroke.

If one of the above variables is off, your Journey’s second cylinder will misfire, or it won’t fire at all.

Journey P0302 OBDII Code Symptoms

dodge journey 2010 firing order

Here are the most common symptoms of P0302 in the Dodge Journey.

  • Check engine light
  • The vehicle itself may begin to run rough. It depends on how serious the misfire is.
  • Your Journey may produce excess vibration, especially at lower RPM.
  • Fuel mileage may suffer.
  • You may smell raw gas coming from the tailpipe.
  • The engine may backfire.

P0302 Trouble Code Causes: Dodge Journey

There are quite a few things that can cause the P0302 trouble code to trigger in the Dodge Journey.

Here are the most common problems that may cause misfiring. They are presented somewhat in order from most to least likely to be causing P0302:

Dodge Journey P0302 misfire Causes

  • Bad Spark Plugs – A fouled spark plug is the most common cause of P0302. Look at the electrodes and see if they are in good shape. Your Journey likely has iridium plugs that need to be changed very infrequently. That being said, a bad spark plug is the number one offender when it comes to P0302 . Here’s a great video on verifying a spark plug is bad.
  • Spark Plug Wires – On most modern engines, the plug wires are not nearly as long as they once were (if your vehicle even has them), but they can still go bad. Here’s how to tell if your plug wires are bad (video).
  • Coil Packs – Coil packs rarely go bad, but when they do, they can cause P0302 in your Dodge Journey. Replacing a set can be very expensive. Here’s how to test them .
  • Bad Fuel Injector – If you have a fuel injector that has failed, it won’t be able to properly atomize fuel, and you’ll get P0302. Here’s a good video on how to diagnose an injector ; it can be a little tricky. You’ll likely see P0171 and/or P0202 with a bad injector.
  • Vacuum leak – If your Journey has a vacuum leak, it can be difficult for the PCM to get the right air/fuel mixture. This will cause the cylinders to misfire, and it’ll throw P0302 if the leak is around that specific cylinder on the intake manifold. Popular Mechanics : How to find a vacuum leak . You’ll likely see P0171 and P0300 when there’s a vacuum leak.
  • Cam or Crank Sensors – This one is unlikely, but it does happen. If the ECU is not getting the right signal from these sensors, the vehicle’s timing will not sync up, and it’ll misfire. You’ll likely get P0300 and a cam/crank correlation code too.
  • Mechanical Issue – If your Journey has a leaking head gasket, bent valve, cracked head, etc… that would cause compression to not be as high as it should be, you’re going to get P0302. You should also feel that your vehicle is down on power as well.

P0302 Fix: Dodge Journey

If P0302 is the only code you get when you plug an OBD II scanner into your Journey, this section should help you determine what is causing the code.

If you have multiple codes with P0302, jump down a section.

1. Swap Test

Here’s a quick and easy test to determine what is causing your Journey’s second cylinder to misfire. Swap ignition parts to another cylinder. Here’s how to do it.

Dodge Journey P0302 Diagnosis

  • Identify the second cylinder.
  • Remove the spark plug.
  • Swap it with the most convenient cylinder to access’s spark plug.
  • Clear your Journey’s DTC codes with a scanner.
  • Start the engine and wait for the check engine light to come back on. If it changed to a different P030X code, the plug was bad.
  • If nothing changed, do this for the coil packs and plug wires (if equipped).
  • If the code stays P0302, you’ve ruled out ignition-related issues.

2. Diagnosis

Here’s what to look for when the swap test didn’t change your vehicle’s misfire code number.

  • Check the wiring harness going to the cylinder two coil pack. If it’s damaged or loose, repair it. Ignition wiring is a common rodent damage area.
  • Check for a vacuum leak.
  • Verify the second injector is working (there’s a link to how to test one above).
  • Do a compression test.
  • Perform a leak-down test.

P0302 + P0300

The most likely reason your Journey will get P0300 and P0302 simultaneously is faulty spark plugs.

P0300 in the Dodge Journey indicates random multiple misfiring, which means that multiple cylinders are misfiring at the same time.

If your Dodge Journey has P0300 and P0302 error codes, it’s best to diagnose why the second cylinder is misfiring and see if that will fix the P0302 code.

Try doing the swap test from the previous section. Make note of the condition of BOTH spark plugs as you swap them. If they look fouled, new plugs will likely clear this code.

P0302 + P0171

Look for a vacuum leak around the second cylinder or a bad fuel injector.

P0171 is one of the most common trouble codes there is. While there are many potential causes for P0171, the most prevalent is a vacuum leak.

When your Journey has P0302 and P0171 together, it’s often caused by a clogged or underperforming fuel injector.

P0302 + Other Cylinder Misfire Codes

Treat P0302 with these codes like it has P0300.

P0302 will often be accompanied by codes P030 1, P0303 , P0304 , P0305, etc… These codes indicate a misfire in cylinders one, three, four, and five, respectively.

Treat P0302 with these codes like it has P0300. Suspect an ignition-related cause or a vacuum leak.

Is P0302 a serious concern?

P0302 is cause for concern and, left unfixed, can leave you stranded. Your Journey will be virtually undrivable if the second cylinder stops firing altogether. The raw fuel can also damage the catalytic converter.

Can you drive your Journey with P0302?

We do not advise driving your Journey with P0302. It can cause damage to your vehicle.

Is P0302 hard to repair?

Most of the time, P0302 is not hard to repair, as you’ll be swapping out ignition parts. It’s a great first-time project for a shade tree mechanic. If the problem ends up not being ignition related, that’s when you might have to bring it into a shop.

Replacing the spark plug or coil packs is the most common fix for P0302 in the Dodge Journey. There are other causes, but the swap test can help narrow them down considerably.
