The Hell Fire Club

The main plot of this tour is dictated by the dark mysteries that begin to unfold, due to the nature of the past history of the area. As we negotiate the trails and terrain, we are surrounded by nature to set the tone. When we reach the peak, we encounter the old Megalithic site, confirmed to be constructed by the great ancients of Ireland BC, where a tomb once existed. They laid at rest until disrupted by order of a few free masons radicals. The site was looted and then destroyed in order to salvage its building materials to build a hunting Lodge in 1735. This lodge is now known in legend as the Hell Fire Club!

The legend

The idle hands of men brought horror to the site…  Your Horror Hike tour guide will reveal the mysteries and legends around the Hell Fire Club and Montpelier Hill. Plenty of photo opportunities and some free time for yourself to explore the area and experience multiple view points.

Mysteries

Things to Note

For this tour, we recommend that you bring rain gear (Irish weather is unpredictable) and the appropriate footwear with ankle protection.  The hike is basic in difficulty, but requires some endurance for the upward hill trails, so keep this in mind.  Our mode of transport to Montpelier Hill is named 'The Banshee'. She is of Mercedes-build and sports 20 comfy seats with large windows for the ultimate scenic drive.  The tour experience can be different depending on (seasonal) early or late sunsets, with or without rain mist, dark or bright, but the location never disappoints...

We promise breathtaking scenery , a great sense of achievement and a true Irish bonding experience . You will leave with unforgettable memories of your visit to the Hellfire Club Dublin on this world famous tour.

Discover Dublin’s Haunted History on a Walking Tour

Visit the Gates of Hell!

Whilst most of Dublin’s grisly past has been left behind to history, not every character has decided to pass over into the next world.

The Emerald Isle is known as being one of the most haunted countries on the planet with many of the world’s most famous supernatural characters and stories finding their roots in the tales told across the centuries by our ancestors around Irish peat fires on dark, dank nights.

Each wave of human culture from the Celts to the Protestant ascendancy has left a mark when it comes to the haunted history of this city. It is this diversity that makes Dublin’s other-worldly folklore so fascinating.

Let us lead you through the eerie, cobblestoned streets, hearing tales from the underbelly of this city, such as the burning of 18th-century madam Darkey “The Witch” Kelly, the tragic tale of The Green Lady of St. Audoen’s and how Dublin’s “Hell” got its name.

As we walk, learn of the period in which The Dolocher stalked our streets, and hear tales of the mysterious 18th century Hellfire Club and its dark origins, until we reach the Gates of Hell…

This unique tour covers the more macabre and gruesome aspects of Dublin’s history as well as tales of the supernatural which have frightened Dubliners for centuries.

Hidden Dublin Tours are pleased to be the only haunted tour in Dublin associated with PSI Ireland (PARANORMAL STUDY AND INVESTIGATION IRELAND).

“We are very pleased to be working with Hidden Dublin Tours, they take a serious and respectful approach to paranormal Dublin providing insight and balance in this historically accurate tour which gives visitors as real an experience as possible.” – Darren Ansell (Chairman) of PSI Ireland

 "Spectacularly Spooky" - TripAdvisor

"We did the Dark Dublin tour with Ciaran and it was SPOOKY! I had chills, my sister was wide eyed and my mom was nauseous from the stories about torture. 15/10 recommend if you are looking for some dark, messed up and TRUE crime tales of Dublin and it’s creepy underbelly"

Through the ages,  Dublin 's narrow lanes and cobbled streets have seen Viking violence, the plague, revolutions, and wars. These streets were home to Gothic novelist Bram Stoker, and the city is packed with macabre history, gruesome ghosts, and supernatural characters.

Get creeped out by the most unsettling paranormal experiences at the spookiest sites and the eeriest events in Ireland's capital.

Stop at the eerie St Michan’s Church

This 9th-century church has cold, dark vaults containing the mummified remains of a 400-year-old nun, an 800-year-old crusader, a body with severed hands and feet, and the death mask of Wolfe Tone, a famous Irish revolutionary. Be sure to make time for this unique, historical, and quietly eerie pitstop.

Feel chills down your spine at Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle , set in sprawling grounds, has an 800-year history, taking in battles and bloodshed. Little wonder then that some of the lovelorn and terrifying creatures continue to haunt the hallways and turrets such as Puck the court jester or the Lady in White. Lots of visitors have reported spine-tingling presences as they toured the building.

A shot through an arched stone doorway into the courtyard of a pub where people are gathered

Have some paranormal with your pint at the Brazen Head

Dublin’s oldest pub, the Brazen Head is worthy of a visit even if you're not interested in the ghosts of its customers, Robert Emmet and his executioner. A famous Irish revolutionary who was hanged nearby in 1803, Emmet planned part of his rebellion inside the walls of the pub. He and his hangman often appear after last orders.

Wander the ruins of the infamous Hellfire Club

Dating from the 18th century, and built using stones from an old graveyard, this club for wealthy young gentlemen is considered Ireland’s most-haunted building. The scene of drinking, gambling, debauchery, torture, Satan-worshipping, and even murder, the Hellfire is synonymous with the occult in Ireland. The sheriff of Dublin, Simon Luttrell (linked to alleged serial killer Darkey Kelly) is said to have sold his soul to the devil here. The ruins on Montpelier Hill are well preserved and accessible by car, and the site additionally affords some of the best views of Dublin City and Bay. But, can you handle it in the dark?

A tour group stands in the big hall of a prison building surrounded by doors to individual cells

Tour the unsettling Kilmainham Gaol

A barbaric jail for 130 years from its opening in 1796, Kilmainham Gaol is the site of numerous public hangings as well as the execution by firing squad of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. Throughout the restoration in the 1950s, many tales of the paranormal emerged and still to this day people report being pushed by unseen hands while lights turn themselves off and on at will. Learn about Irish history on a thought-provoking guided tour of this eerie prison.

Take a hellish ride on the Ghostbus

Tales from Dublin’s ghastly history abound on this highly entertaining and inventive theatrical Ghostbus Tour , complete with professional actors. Stops include a hidden city cemetery and a medieval vault at Dublin Castle . This tour offer a less-scary toned-down family-friendly version for ages seven to 14.

Experience the horrors of the Black Death on the Gravedigger Ghost Tour

Set in the time of the Black Death, this bus tour starts at the location of an old plague house, a home to people afflicted with the dreaded disease. It takes in Kilmainham Gaol, where you can meet the prisoner with the never-ending sentence, and many other lurid locations include the Gravediggers Pub. Complete with actors and storytellers, the bus itself is a moving house of horrors.

Brave the Haunted History Walking Tour of Dublin

This unique  90-minute walking tour features tales of Darkey Kelly, her connections to the Hellfire Club in the Dublin Mountains, and her gruesome death at the stake. It also visits the cobbled streets where the demonic Dolocher – a convicted prisoner with the appearance of a pig-like wild beast – roamed the streets. This tour finishes in Dublin’s "Hell", an area near Christchurch with an unsavoury history.

Be there and be scared at Dublin's best Halloween events

Time your visit just right for the best spooks and thrills at these only-in-Dublin celebrations of all that's unsettling.

Join the Macnas Halloween Parade

Macnas , a legendary and unique Irish interactive performing arts group, is named after the Irish word meaning joyful abandonment. As masters of storytelling and intrigue, they’ve toured with U2 and done shows with MTV. Based in Galway in the West of Ireland, each year the group brings its family-oriented Halloween Street Parade to Ireland’s capital city.

Celebrate the Gothic at Bram Stoker Festival

Born in Dublin in 1847 and suffering ill-health as a child, this Trinity College graduate gifted the world perhaps the most famous literary horror of all time –  Dracula . Bram Stoker Festival takes place near Halloween each year in venues around Dublin and offers a playful yet Gothic glimpse into the Dublin of Stoker’s time, explores his influences, and sinks its fangs into the supernatural.

Plunge yourself into The Nightmare Realm

Positioned as a horror film that you walk-through, this immersive Halloween event takes you through a maze of rooms and is guaranteed to delve into your deepest nightmares. Go to hell with terrifying zones such as The Butcher Boys and The Church of the Damned.

What to read and watch before you go

Be armed and ready for the very best of Dublin's hair-raising horrors with these books and movies.

Dracula , Bram Stoker:   Set between Transylvania and London, this classic gothic novel was birthed in Dublin and no experience of Dublin’s specters and spirits would be complete without first reading it.

The Cock and Anchor , Sheridan le Fanu: Set in Dublin in the turbulent mid-eighteenth century, this under-rated Gothic novel thriller features young lovers try a daring escape from villains in a haunted house.

The Eclipse (2009): This movie tells an eerie ghost story set in a fictional Irish seaside town when a visiting horror novelist strikes up a relationship with an Irish widower.

The Cured (2017): Somewhat prophetically positioned given the COVID-19 pandemic, this horror movie is set in a post-plague world. The outbreak of a virus has been mainly brought under control, but the sick are kept locked up while the cured are allowed to lead almost normal lives. It was filmed around north inner city Dublin.

The Best Ghost Tours in Dublin

Mummies in St Michans Church

As the home of Bram Stoker (author of Dracula ), and a place with plenty of its own gruesome history, taking in revolution and medieval grit, Ireland’s capital Dublin is a great place to get spooky.

So why not let yourself get swept away in the historical chaos, whether it’s in hearing the classic ghost-laden tales of the cobbled streets and ghoulish churches, or linking the history of the city to Viking violence of over a millennium ago.

All of these tours – the churches aside – occur in the evening. Most take advantage of the city’s narrow lanes, spooky architecture, and typically dingy weather to add to the atmosphere. Check out our favourite eerie offerings.

Dublin Ghost Bus

Claiming to be the world’s first ghost bus tour (perhaps a touch optimistically), the Dublin Ghost Bus is the popular tourist brand’s main nighttime explorer, and impressively inventive. The tour will take you to the vaults of Dublin Castle, with storytellers and live actors giving the journey an arguably more show-type vibe than a tour. With the windows blacked out for entertainment purposes, don’t expect to see all that much of the city other than the core destinations, but you won’t lack for stories, taking in Dubliner Bram Stoker’s Dracula , or the local ghosts and ghouls. Tales are told in that witty, punny style that’s so stereotypically Irish. You must be over 14 to take part (and probably shouldn’t be of a nervous disposition).

The tour departs from outside Dublin Bus HQ on O’Connell Street, lasts about two hours, and costs €28 per person. Daily.

Get a taste below:

Dublin Gravedigger Bus Tour

Yes, Dublin does indeed have two ghost-leaning bus tours – there’s quite the spooky history. The Gravedigger Bus Tour , the more recent addition, is a little more historically informative and a little less entertainment-focused than its rival and includes a ‘ghoulish brew’ at the final stop, the Gravedigger’s Pub, which gives the tour its name. This one is only a touch less cheesy, though; it’s quite definitely more for fun than a serious history lesson. While there are some genuinely impressive sites included, such as the historic, revolution-linked Kilmainham Gaol, you’ll mainly be standing outside hearing stories rather than actually touring them. Expect a playful, slightly gruesome, quirky, colourful night out. The bus itself is pretty spooky too.

The tour departs from central College Green, lasts about two hours and costs €25 per person. Daily.

Here’s a little taster:

The Haunted History Walking Tour

Taking its cues from ancient stories passed down through generations of Irish folklore, the Haunted History Walking Tour includes tales of cult-like activity at the Hellfire Club overlooking the city. It explores the ‘witch burning’ of Darkey Kelley in the 18th century and dabbles in the ghostly supernatural tales that simmer across the capital. This tour is certainly a more ‘serious’ look at Dublin’s more alternative history than the other offerings listed here, and it will also explore far more of the city, though perhaps lacking the curated entertainment value of the bus options. Backed by a group called Paranormal Study and Investigation Ireland, the guides pride themselves on historical accuracy and knowing all those creepy old tales.

The tour departs from the square adjacent to Dublin City Hall, lasts about 90 minutes and costs €13 per person. It typically runs three days a week.

Grab a glance in the video below:

1. Bram Stoker's Castle Dracula

The author of Dracula grew up in the upmarket north-side Dublin suburb of Clontarf, and the popular district now celebrates one of its most iconic sons with a spooky castle glance at his greatest creation. The cynical might see Castle Dracula as simply an elaborate haunted house, but with characters roaming the halls who seem extremely into their roles, you will learn quite a bit about Stoker’s life and art, in between the visits to Dracula’s lair and strolling the gothic-themed, dimly lit tunnels. Movie buffs are likely to be particularly impressed.

St Michan’s Church/Christchurch Cathedral

Both of these tourist-leaning churches offer tours, though you can just pay to enter yourself and explore the buildings both dating back to the 11th century. Why come here? Apart from the rugged beauty of the ageing buildings themselves, both contain mummies. St Michan’s isn’t all that impressive from the outside, but once you hit the basement, you’ll find the open coffins of 18th-century rebels, the creepy death mask of Wolfe Tone, and ancient furniture that prompts shivers in its own right. Christchurch is the more impressive building, but not so loaded in ancient dinginess. It is home, however, to the mummified bodies of a cat and a rat, the former of which chased the latter down an organ pipe centuries ago, never to emerge.

Iconic band announce comeback tour more than 20 years after earworm hit single

Get your raving shoes on – Scooter are back with a massive comeback tour hitting venues across the UK.

The German techno band – made up of H. P. Baxxter, Marc Blou, Jay Frog, and Jens Thele – are embarking on their 30th-anniversary tour later this year with shows in London , Manchester , Birmingham , Newcastle, Dublin, Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Cardiff.

It comes more than 20 years after the release of their smash hit single The Logical Song, originally by Supertramp, which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Charts.

Tickets for the shows go on pre-sale on Wednesday, April 10, at 10am, followed by general sale on Friday, April 12 also at 10am.

The tour coincides with the release of the band’s milestone 21st studio album Open Your Mind and Your Trousers, including singles Rechno is Back, Rave & Shout, Waste Your Youth, and For Those About To Rave.

Scooter kicked off the mammoth tour in Germany last month, with it continuing through Europe until the group arrive on UK shores in October and November.

The four-piece formed in 1993 and has sold a whopping 30 million records to date, earning more than 80 gold and platinum music awards/

They have landed 23 top ten hits, and are considered the most commercially successful German single-record act.

Scooter have produced several well-known singles across the world, including Hyper Hyper, How Much Is the Fish?, Maria, Jumping Over The World, and The Question Is What Is the Question?.

They released The Logical Song in 2001, which became the band’s highest-charting single of their career and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).

It was the 15th best-selling single of 2002 and was one of the anthems synonymous with rave culture in the 2000s.

Scooter’s music – especially their wacky lyrics that have experienced plenty of praise on TikTok – as well as their wild outfits, Baxxter’s luminous bleach blonde hair, and pyrotechnic-filled performances have seen them become household names across the globe.

Speaking to City Magazine in 2019, vocalist Baxxter reflected on the impact Scooter have had on the electronic music industry.

‘I’ve always loved bands with strong stage presence. When I was a teenager listening to hard rock, I loved Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, who destroyed his guitar at every concert.

‘Even then, I knew it was a staged part of the show, but that didn’t diminish the excitement I felt when he smashed it. When I think about the pyrotechnics we used on the first tours, compared to today’s explosive shows, I just smile.’

Speaking about their legendary live shows, he continued: ‘At one point we were spending more on pyrotechnics than we could make in tickets, but we could afford it because the shows were selling massive amounts of records.

‘Every single we put out went gold or platinum, and then all of a sudden, albums started selling. Of course, this has completely changed, but fortunately, pyrotechnics have also become cheaper and we don’t have to dwell on it.’
