Bunny chow (curry in hollowed out loaf of bread), Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Top 10 Culinary Experiences in Durban

Find out where to get the best bunny chow, barbecue, afternoon tea, and more with this list of the top culinary experiences to have in Durban.

Bunny Chow One bite and you’ll understand why, when ordering a “bunny,” it’s best to add “and a beer.” Durban’s ubiquitous street food starts innocently enough with a square loaf of soft, white bread. Then the middle is scooped out, replaced with lip-searing spicy curry (mutton, prawn, chicken, or vegetarian). It’s hot, messy, and impossible to eat without using both hands and lots of napkins. The beer is there to douse your tongue long enough to take a second bite. A quarter-loaf bunny is enough for lunch or a hearty snack. Two old-school Durban curry spots known for their bunnies are the Britannia Hotel and Goundens Restaurant and Take Away .

Fresh Sardines on Toast Sometime between May and July (most years), swirling, silvery sardines by the millions migrate north along the KwaZulu-Natal coast following a cold ocean current. The Sardine Run, billed as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth,” launches a frenzy of fishing and feeding. Dolphin pods herd the sardines into tight packs, making it easy for seabirds, sharks, and seals to pursue and feast on the swimming buffet. Fishermen sell their shares of the haul at the fish markets on Wilson’s Wharf , where the waterfront pubs and restaurants also peddle fresh sardine dishes. Keep it simple and local by ordering a Durban favorite—fresh sardines on toast with onions.

Shisa Nyama Translated literally, this Zulu term for barbecuing (“burn the meat”) doesn’t sound particularly appetizing. Forget the name and focus on the taste—tender, hot, and flavorful. South Africans love to barbecue, or braai, and if you aren’t invited over for some backyard braaiing, visit a local township shisa nyama, where you can choose your own boerewors (farmer’s sausage), steak, chops, or chicken, and carry it outside to the grill. Nembula’s in Empangeni and Max’s Lifestyle in Umlaziare are legendary hot spots, and not just for the flavorful meat. Accompanying the braai and cold beer are everything from weekend dance parties to complimentary car washes.

Bombay Crush Pepto-Bismol pink and super sweet, South Asia’s traditional falooda is South Africa’s (in Durban, at least) Bombay Crush. The cool concoction is a frothy blend of rose-colored Rooh Afza syrup, milk, and tukmaria (basil) seeds topped with a couple of dollops of vanilla ice cream. Durban’s Indian Muslims traditionally drink the filling Crush during Ramadan, but the creamy shake is available any time of the year at most of the city’s curry restaurants. Look for the bright-pink drink on menus in the historic Indian district around Dr Yusuf Dadoo (Grey) and Bertha Mkhize (Victoria) Streets.

Food With a View Since 1973, every dish at the Roma Revolving Restaurant has been served with a side of 360-degree city and harbor views. Totally renovated in 2009, the circular glass dining room is perched on the 32nd floor of the 358-foot John Ross House and completes one revolution every 60 to 90 minutes. Roma’s menu is nearly as expansive as the panorama: traditional Italian cuisine, locally sourced seafood, and specialty game entrees like crocodile and ostrich. After dinner, snag an outdoor table at rooftop Gino’s Sky Bar. On a clear night, stargaze above and watch the city lights reflecting off the Indian Ocean below.

Local Brews The Western Cape is wine country, but in KwaZulu-Natal the libation of choice is locally brewed beer. Several commercial and craft breweries in the province are stops along Tourism KZN’s fledgling beer or brew route . Most offer public tours (advance reservations required), and some, like artisanal brewers Porcupine Quill Micro Brewery and Deli in the Valley of 1000 Hills and Durban’s Unity Brasserie and Bar, pair the house beer with light fare. Visit Porcupine for Karoo Red Ale and Unity for the signature Cowbell pilsner, or stop in at any pub to order a pint of Shongweni Brewery ’s Robson’s Pale Ale or Robson’s East Coast Ale.

Tastes of India Bunny chow is Durban’s most celebrated snack, but don’t let your gastronomical tour of the city’s Indian cuisine stop there. From casual curry dens to palatial waterfront restaurants, and from North Indian tandoori to Goan seafood specialties, there’s an Indian menu to fit every palate and price point. Along the Golden Mile, try Jaipur Palace in Durban North, Vintage India in Morningside, and The Jewel of India in the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel. For an elegant North Indian dining experience, head north to Kashmir on the Dolphin Coast in Umhlanga.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

Zulu Cuisine Durban is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, the Zulu Kingdom, yet typical tourist itineraries rarely include sampling any Zulu cuisine. Some of the bigger resorts and casinos offer a multicourse prix-fixe menu of Zulu fare featuring traditional selections like mogodu (tripe), amadumbi (Zulu potatoes), and pap (hard maize porridge). More authentic Zulu foods are found outside of the city—west in the more rural sections of the Valley of 1000 Hills and north in Eshowe. Options range from “walkie-talkies” (boiled chicken feet) hawked at informal markets to the grilled crocodile steaks featured at pheZulu Safari Park ’s Croctilians Restaurant.

Afternoon Tea An enduring British tradition from Durban’s colonial era is teatime. Several upscale hotels host fabulously decadent versions of afternoon tea. Colonial architecture adds a spoonful of history to tea at the 167-year-old Royal Hotel , and Umhlanga Rocks’s neighboring Oyster Box and Beverly Hills hotels. Brush up on your table manners and indulge (delicately, of course) in the tiered decks of baked scones, tiny cakes, and finger sandwiches. The accompanying pots of freshly steeped teas celebrate Durban’s multicultural mélange: Indian Darjeeling, British Earl Grey, and South African rooibos.

Samoosas No matter how you spell it, Durban’s version of the Indian samosa is the appetizer of choice. The crispy, triangular-shaped pastries typically are stuffed with a spicy minced blend of chopped onions, chillies, and either lamb, fish, potato, or veggies. If you try only one, make it a Cape Malay sweet potato samoosa with chutney. A staple at most of the city’s Indian restaurants, samoosas are a true crossover item appearing on pub, casual, and fine-dining menus across Durban. One of the more decadent variations is at the Cargo Hold Restaurant , where the dessert cart includes a banana fudge samoosa paired with cheesecake and ice cream.

Shopping bag labelled our 'Our favourite shops' bulging with fresh bread, lettuce and pineapple

Welcome to April’s Observer Food Monthly

Enjoy a tour of chefs’ favourite local shops, discover what’s new about the latest generation of wine bars and try Georgina Hayden’s moreish Greekish recipes

“I think of it as a fairyland of deliciousness,” says food writer Bee Wilson, author of The Secret of Cooking , about Culinaris, a deli in Cambridge. In this issue, we have asked chefs and cooks to tell us about their favourite local food shops . Not so much their everyday food shops, but where they go for something special, a perfect sourdough loaf or a bunch of Vietnamese greens. They lead us to hand-churned butter in the Tyne Valley, water spinach and chrysanthemum greens in Islington and Chinese aubergines in Glasgow, and tell us where to find smokies in Devon, fabulous croissants in York and a van selling fish fresh from the boats in Derry.

The reinvention of the wine bar was well overdue and is probably one of the best things to happen to eating and drinking in years. New wines, new food, new attitude. Tomé Morrissy-Swan has been watching the phenomenon and brings us up to date with the latest and best openings countrywide.

We have a whole host of recipes for you including an extract from Georgina Hayden’s new book, Greekish . We love her sticky aubergine and pomegranate tart, barbecued sea bass with pistachio and caper pesto and her phenomenal feta and white chocolate baklava cheesecake. The recipes are here and we have an interview with Georgie where she tells us, lovingly, about cooking for her sternest critic.

I have a collection of recipes for you too, for those spring days that turn out a bit chilly towards the end: baked tomatoes with chickpeas and curry leaves; a potato, salmon and spinach pie; pork with apples and cider; and onion soup with cheese toasts. We also have lunch with the globetrotting Simon Reeve, and Esme Young from the The Great British Sewing Bee shares her Life on Plate . And Jay has been researching the what, when and why of food crazes and explains why they are actually nothing new , just perhaps a little more crazy.

Tour Durban crowns new champions

There were more than 3 000 entrants from riding communities across durban who took part in ‘durban’s favourite weekend of cycling’..

JOSH Rheeders claimed his first-ever victory at this year’s aQuellé Tour Durban men’s cycle race title in Durban on Sunday, with Upper Highway star cyclist Joanna van de Winkel claiming the women’s title.

Van de Winkel (Sandton City Cycle Nation cycling team) collected four trophies after Sunday’s road race as she made up for the disappointment of finishing second in Saturday’s 40km mountain bike race.

“I was quite disappointed after the mountain bike. I thought I had won on Saturday, but when we went off track, I did not know where I was when I joined again. So that was a bit disappointing, but today made up for it,” Van de Winkel said.

Rheeders from the Luso ACDC Pro Cycling team was a dominant force in the lead group and timed his finishing sprint to perfection to come out of a big group of riders to claim his first Tour Durban win.

“I am very happy with this win. It was very tactical today. There was one team with six riders, and they were kind of messing us around all race. I was in a move on the last lap, and then it all came back together, so I then sat in until the sprint, and I took it from a long way out as we hit the descent. With the tailwind, I was able to carry it to the finish,” he said.

Fast-paced action in MTB race

In Saturday’s aQuellé Tour Durban 40km MTB race powered by Cycle Lab, Tyronne White showed his prowess on the bike, claiming the top spot.

The 40km race, which started and finished near Cornubia Mall, was dominated by White and riders he coaches, and he led home a DriveTrain Academy clean-sweep of the top four positions.

The women’s race was also a triumph for DriveTrain, with young Madison Bateson, who rode the 40km for the first time after winning the 20km last year, produced the shock of the day. She edged out last year’s winner, Joanna Van De Winkel.

“It is such a nice race,” said White after crossing the line. “It is a hard race and a bit of a different kind of race because you are hard on the pedals the whole way. My average power for the ride is really high.”

In the trail run at the same venue, Ewoud Grobler and Nokukhanya Meyiwa proved too strong for their rivals in the 20km event, and they wrote a small piece of history by winning the first event aQuellé Tour Durban Trail titles.

About 3 000 entries from the huge riding communities in the greater Durban area – from Ballito and uMhlanga in the north, to the Berea, Bluff and South Coast riders in the south, to the Pinetown and Kloof in the West – took part in the ‘Durban’s Favourite Weekend of Cycling’.

Worthington Farmers Market, Columbus Food Adventures voted as the best in the country

Local produce at the farmers market in Worthington.

The Worthington Farmers Market is to open its summer season May 4 with a major honor to its credit. It has been voted by readers of USA TODAY as the nation's best farmers market.

They must be doing something right at the market that runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon along a stretch of High Street in Old Worthington. The Worthington Farmers Market topped outdoor markets that operate along the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, and at an oceanfront park in Honolulu.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket had been voted No. 1 in USA TODAY's 10 best reader polls for three straight years. This was the first year Worthington's market was nominated by a panel of travel writers and other experts.

More farmers markets: When do area farmers markets open? Here's a guide to where and when to go

The result of reader votes were announced today.

"Nearly 100 vendors from the Columbus area converge for the year-round Worthington Farmers Market that adapts to the seasons," USA TODAY wrote.

"In summer, May through October, farmers and producers of high-quality food and plants sell al fresco in the Old Worthington Historic District. The rest of the year, the market goes indoors at The Shops at Worthington Place."

The last indoor market takes place Saturday before it moves outdoors for summer.

Organizers say the Worthington Farmers Market, which began in 1987, should have its highest number of vendors ever this summer.

Columbus Food Adventures another favorite

Another favorite of Columbus foodies also was voted as the nation's best by USA TODAY readers. Columbus Food Adventures , which leads geography and cuisine-based food tours in Columbus and its suburbs, topped a list of nominees that included tours in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans and Chicago.

Here's how Columbus Food Adventures was described by USA TODAY: "From neighborhood walking tours to by-van excursions and private tours, Columbus Food Adventures offers a full menu of ways to meet the area's rich culinary scene. Whether you're a meat-lover, brew-hound, taco fiend or gastronomic globe-trotter, there's a tour to fit your appetite."

Walking tours include the Short North, German Village, Grandview Avenue, Dublin and Old Worthington, while van tours hit local taco trucks or a variety of international restaurants.

Results of a third USA TODAY reader vote also were announced. Budd Dairy Food Hall , the Italian-Village collection of bars and restaurants in an old milk-bottling plant, finished at No. 3 in voting for the nation's best food hall.

Mother Road Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished at the top in national voting, while the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis finished second.

Budd Dairy was ranked sixth in a list of the best U.S. food halls posted by the global travel site Big 7 Travel .
