For those who live in the El Paso Area,  borders are a bit arbitrary. This is especially true of the state border between Texas and New Mexico.

With El Paso sitting on both a state and international border, day and weekend trips can mean visiting outside of Texas with only a few miles of driving.

Las Cruces, New Mexico

One of the most popular places to visit from El Paso is Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Located along the Organ Mountains and in the fertile Rio Grande Valley, Las Cruces has somewhat of a small-town feel, although its size does not suggest it. 

Don’t worry; there are plenty of things to do in this wonderful southern New Mexico city.

Carlsbad, New Mexico

Most people have probably heard of the Caverns of Carlsbad, New Mexico, but many may not realize just how close they are to El Paso. 

Spending time exploring underground caves’ natural wonders at the famous Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a must.

However, you should know there is much more to the Carlsbad area than caverns. 

If you enjoy the outdoors, Carlsbad also offers the fun of visiting one hundred million-year-old waterfalls, a lake for boating and swimming, a zoo and natural area, and a state park to enjoy a hike, plus many more things that are overshadowed by the caverns.

Fort Bliss has had a long history serving the area of El Paso, dating back to the 19th century. 

With the advent of mechanized warfare, Fort Bliss became even more necessary for training armored divisions. 

Today, this still active military base lets you enjoy the day browsing through its history in the form of displays of actual military equipment like tanks and missiles. 

The base also offers a park and outside tables to enjoy a picnic during your visit.

Juarez, Mexico

El Paso would not be the city it is without its sister city south of the border.

In fact, without the presence of the border, these two distinct but related cities would have merged long ago. 

Although Juarez has had a checkered past in recent years, and while some still consider it a risky place to visit, it has come a long way to recover its reputation. 

If a day trip into Juarez is on your bucket list, follow locals’ advice and visit during the daytime, don’t wander off the beaten path, and use common sense, just as you would in any other city. 

Juarez offers a chance to visit the Mexican culture of the Chihuahuan Desert with its historic buildings and museums.

Just kidding, but it is home to a place that makes you feel as if you were visiting the great African desert. 

When you hear the name Monahans, two things come to mind, a traditional West Texas town and Monahans State Park with its enormous sand dunes that appear to go on forever. 

Spend the day gliding down the slick dunes on a plastic tub or bring a picnic and enjoy the outdoors.

Don’t forget to run into town and visit the Roy Orbison Museum for a bit of the legend’s music history.

The Davis Mountain Triangle

We will admit, we made this name up, although there is no doubt it fits the description of the towns of Alpine, Fort Davis , and Marfa in the Davis Mountains of West Texas. 

Each of these towns has its own character, but taken as a whole, if you experience one, you must also take in the others. 

The scenic drive connecting all of these towns is as good as any in the USA.

T he only way to describe the area is where a big sky country meets the land under it. 

Enjoy a night at the “star party” of the McDonald Observatory outside of Fort Davis, engage with world-class art galleries in the quirky town of Marfa, or fill a full day visiting unique shopping venues in Alpine.

Tucson, Arizona

The distance between East and West Texas is evident when we consider a visit to Tucson, Arizona, is a much shorter road trip from El Paso to Houston. 

For lovers of the desert, there may be no better short road trip than one from the Chihuahuan Desert to the Sonoran Desert.  

Tucson is a fun weekend getaway with plenty of shopping, food, and attractions to enjoy, but the best part is undoubtedly the stunning Saguaro National Park, which is packed full of gigantic Saguaro cacti that tower over the humans admiring them.

You failed to mention White Sands national Park in New Mexico and Ruidoso New Mexico with the mascalero Indians., The Gila wilderness. All of these are very close to El Paso

You forgot to mention Cattleman’s restaurant in Fabens, Texas. It is 30 minutes from El Paso.

Chamizal is a national park IN el paso. Deming, Silver City, Elephant Butte and Caballo Lake are ALL within 3 hours of El Paso. Good article though and informative!

1. Las Cruces

In the 1916 red-brick National Guard Armory, Luna County Mimbres Museum houses a tack room, toys and dolls, a quilt display, and military memorabilia. The Mimbres room displays extensive Mimbreno Indian Pottery. Don’t miss the army tank outside.

Pro Tip: For the best steak west of El Paso, this remote place is worth finding. Take Highway 549 SE east and turn right on Lewis Flats Road. Adobe Deli is about 9 miles east down a lonely desert road. Look for an old windmill and a small collection of broken-down buildings. The classic French onion soup is the real thing. Plate-sized T-bones and thick and juicy ribeyes are to die for. For lunch, the mile-high deli sandwiches with a side of potato salad or onion rings need a to-go-box. The hamburger deluxe is a monster, and the barbecue sandwich, yep!

3. Lordsburg

58 miles west of Deming, Lordsburg is the birthplace of the official New Mexico State song “O Fair New Mexico,” written by Elizabeth Garrett, the blind daughter of famed Sheriff Pat Garrett.

Twenty miles north of Lordsburg, Gila Lower Box Canyon is a lush oasis in the desert. Fish for smallmouth bass and catfish, view wildlife and over 200 species of birds, including winterizing bald eagles. Find camping spots under the cottonwoods at Nichol’s Canyon and hiking at Spring-on-the-bluff.

Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Museum features a POW and World War II exhibit plus area ranching heritage, antique tools, mining, rocks, and minerals.

Three miles southwest of Lordsburg, Shakespeare Ghost Town is a gold-mining town and historical site, now privately owned and occasionally open for tours.

The glistening white hills of gypsum at White Sands National Park rise like great surreal waves of bleached sand. Visit at the close of the day. As you take off your shoes, feel the texture of the sand change from soft billows to wind-firmed walkable crusts. The 145,000 protected acres became a national park in December 2019.

Founded in 1994, White Sands Missile Range Museum preserves the artifacts and history of the Army and New Mexico. Oliver Lee State Park features the historic ranch house, hiking trails, wildlife and bird viewing, camping, and an oasis of water pools under the cottonwood trees in Dog Canyon.

The World’s Largest Pistachio is a tribute to Thomas McGinn, founder of PistachioLand, a 111-acre orchard and vineyard started from bare land in 1980. You’ll find over 12,000 pistachio trees and 14 acres of wine grapes, McGinn’s Country Store, and Arena Blanca Winery.

5. Cloudcroft

Ski Cloudcroft , the country’s southernmost ski resort, has a base elevation of 8,400 feet with a 700-foot vertical rise, ski classes, and equipment rentals. 

New Mexico Rails-to-Trails converts abandoned railroad lines in the Sacramento Mountains into multi-use, multi-access recreational trails. A 68-mile-long trail leads to Sunspot, Alamogordo, La Luz, High Rolls, and back to Cloudcroft.

Franklin Mountains State Park

If you’re like me, you’ll want to enjoy the natural side of town, so head to Franklin Mountains State Park and enjoy some of this amazing mountain range considered to be the southern-most tip of the Rocky Mountains.  A hike to the Aztec Caves is well worth the effort and this state park is also a great place for rock climbing.

Wyler Aerial Tramway

UPDATE: Currently closed

Instead of hiking, you can take the easy way up and enjoy the mountains (and city) from 5,632 feet high atop the Wyler Aerial Tramway . You’ll be able to see for miles into Texas, New Mexico and Mexico — it’s definitely a must-stop on any trip to El Paso!

Magoffin Home

I recommend starting off your journey through town by learning about the culture of the “Boot Capital of the World,” beginning with the Magoffin Home, an 1874 adobe house built by the 4-time mayor of El Paso Joseph Magoffin. I don’t know of any other adobe homes in Texas that rival the interesting beauty of this one.

Concordia Cemetery

For more history, trace your steps to the Wild West side of town and visit the historic Concordia Cemetery, holding the graves of the famous and infamous inhabitants of El Paso, including gunslinger John Wesley Hardin. It’s both eerie and educational!

Rocketbuster Boots

Of course, no trip through the “Boot Capital of the World” would be complete without stopping at one of the many boot shops in town. Learn about its boot-making heritage by visiting one of the Lucchese or Tony Llama stores, or to see custom boots unlike any other, head to Rocketbuster Boots where they make custom boots that are basically art for your feet.

L&J Cafe

Being a border town, the influence of El Paso’s sister city of Juarez is everywhere. You can see the Texas-Mexico line for yourself at Border Monument Number 1  or you can simply eat your way through Mexican culture at one of the many AMAZING Mexican food restaurants all over town. I highly recommend L&J Cafe where you can eat green sauce enchiladas made the same way since they first started serving them in 1927 — and they’re still just as delicious.

Chicos Tacos

Forget the outward appearance and ignore the simple decor inside this fast-food, rolled-taco joint, if you follow the masses of locals that swear by Chicos Tacos, you’ll most certainly find the most addictive food in the city. These cheesy, soupy tacos might just make convince you to move to El Paso.

One Day in El Paso: Our Itinerary

As part of our quest to see all of the national park sites, we finally made it to El Paso, Texas on Christmas Day 2019. With just one park site, Chamizal National Memorial, we didn’t stay long. In fact, one day in El Paso was just about perfect. Even though it was a short stay, we quickly fell in love with this city.

If you’re coming from the eastern United States, like us, getting to El Paso isn’t exactly easy. Yes, there is an airport and flying in certainly would be a good option. We always love a good road trip, though, so that’s exactly what we did! Our trip started in Tallahassee, FL after an early Christmas visit with my family. From there, it took two days of driving I-10 to get to El Paso. It was a long drive, but it was definitely worth it!

Our visit to El Paso was part of a nearly two-week Christmas road trip through the southwest. We’ve been yearning to visit this part of the country for a while but the distance from home and summer heat have kept us away until now. Two weeks isn’t nearly long enough for all the national parks in the southwest region but at least it’s a start. 

Whether you’re on a national parks quest or just looking for a fun weekend getaway, El Paso is a great place to visit. Our itinerary for one day in El Paso covers historic sites, scenic views and where to eat and drink.

Where to Stay in El Paso

As the sixth-largest city in Texas, you will have plenty of hotel options in El Paso. We found a great rate at the DoubleTree , located right in downtown, and were very happy with our choice. The hotel is located not far off the interstate which made it easy to get to. It is also walking distance to several downtown must-see attractions.

Perhaps the only negative to the DoubleTree was the tight parking garage, especially for anyone driving a large vehicle like our truck. That is a somewhat common problem for any downtown hotel, though, so it wasn’t completely unexpected. 

We arrived at the hotel early in the evening on Christmas Day and were pleasantly surprised to find the onsite restaurant, Fire, open for dinner. Traveling on Christmas Day is always a bit of a gamble but this year it wasn’t a problem at all for us.

Things to Do in El Paso

San jacinto plaza.

After dinner, we walked just a couple of blocks from the hotel to San Jacinto Plaza, a historic park in the heart of downtown El Paso. Taking up a full city block, the park is a great place to relax and breathe in some fresh air. 

At Christmas, the park is covered in lights and other decorations making it an even more popular destination. When we arrived on Christmas night, we found the entire park covered with people snapping photos and admiring the sights. From white lights lining the trees to a giant ornament-covered tree, there were plenty of photo opportunities throughout the park.

In the center of the plaza is an alligator statue, a throwback to when live alligators lived in a small pond in the park.

After taking a few pictures at San Jacinto, we wandered around a bit checking out all the lights and WinterFest festivities. The ice skating rink was somewhat tempting, but we were tired after a long day of driving and decided to just head back to the hotel.

Digital Wall

We started our one day in El Paso with another walk through downtown. After two days of driving, we really wanted to get in a little exercise! Our first stop was, again, just around the corner outside the Museum of History to see the Digital Wall, aka DIGIE (Digital Information Gateway). 

This interactive touch screen is the only one of its kind in the United States. It includes photos and videos covering El Paso’s history and culture. This is a great place to learn more about the city and find other things to do in El Paso.

We spent a few minutes playing around with it and looking at information on our next stop, the Magoffin Home State Historic Site. Whether you’re interested in finding information or just playing around with a unique digital landmark, DIGIE is a great place to start your visit to El Paso. 

The Digital Wall is located outside the Museum of History but we did not visit the museum. In fact, I don’t think it was even open the morning we visited.

Magoffin Home State Historic Site

To learn more about El Paso history and architecture we took a tour of the Magoffin Home State Historic Site. The adobe structure dates back to the 1870s and is a near-perfect example of Territorial-style architecture.

Mexican-born Joseph Magoffin lived much of his life in the United States and even served in the US Civil War while living in Kentucky. He later helped to develop the city of El Paso, bringing railroads and utilities to the area. 

Magoffin and his wife, Octavia, built this home in 1875 and three generations of Magoffins lived in the home for more than 100 years. The vast majority of the furnishings are family pieces. On the tour, we enjoyed learning about the history of the family, how they helped shape El Paso and seeing the changes in the home over its 100 years of housing the family.

The Magoffin Home is located about a mile from the DoubleTree. It took us about 30 minutes to walk each direction. The walk itself was very easy and we enjoyed getting to see a bit more of downtown El Paso.

Chamizal National Memorial

At the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the United States gained much of its current western land. At the same time, the two countries established the Rio Grande as the Texas-Mexico border. Unfortunately, massive flooding in the 1860s changed the course of the river sparking a dispute over the international border. 

The area in question was originally Mexican farmland known as the Chamizal tract. A “chamizal” is an area where the Spanish scrub bush chamizo grows. Over the years, both countries worked to establish a permanent boundary, straightening the river channel in the process. 

This, of course, was not an easy process and still left the ownership of the original Chamizal tract and the newly created Cordova Island in question. It took nearly 100 years but in 1962, US President John F. Kennedy met with Mexican President Lopez Mateos to finally resolve the dispute. 

Ultimately, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Chamizal Convention in 1963. This treaty settled the dispute, a four-mile-long concrete-lined channel was built and the two countries exchanged parcels of land. Chamizal National Memorial celebrates this peaceful settlement and fosters cultural understanding. 

Things to Do at Chamizal National Memorial

The 55-acre park sits on the US-Mexican border, with clear views of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. Inside the visitor center, you’ll find a short film, exhibits on the dispute and friendly settlement, gallery space and a theater. The grounds have several walking trails and an amphitheater. 

You’ll find cultural performances throughout the year, including a summer concert series at the outdoor stage. Unfortunately, there were no events while we were in town. 

Expect to spend about 30 minutes viewing the exhibits at the visitor center. Be sure to pick up the self-guided trail tour brochure to help you better understand the Chamizal story as you walk the park grounds. The park trails are easy to navigate and provide a great place to get some exercise and enjoy the views of this once disputed land.

Plan to spend at least an hour at the park; you could easily spend more time enjoying a picnic or walking the park grounds.

Lunch at Chico’s Tacos

Following our visit to Chamizal NM, we were ready for some lunch. I turned to the Visit El Paso app to search for a local favorite and came up with Chico’s Tacos. This no-frills restaurant boasts itself as “an El Paso tradition” and has been featured on the Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate .

We opted for their signature dish, rolled tacos. A single order is served with three rolled taquito-style tacos drenched in a soupy red sauce and smothered in shredded cheese. The tacos were tasty if a little difficult to eat. I was most impressed at how crispy the tacos stayed even while soaking in the sauce. 

You will need cash but you won’t need much of it. We got two “single orders” and two medium drinks for less than $9. Even though the restaurant was busy, the line moved fast and we received our food much quicker than anticipated.

I don’t know that I would say this was the greatest lunch I’ve ever had, but it was something unique and tasty. Whether you stop in for their signature rolled tacos, a hamburger or a hot dog (uniquely served on a hamburger bun), Chico’s Tacos is a great local restaurant to check out.

National Border Patrol Museum 

Located on the northern outskirts of El Paso, the National Border Patrol Museum is the only one of its kind in the United States. The museum shares the history of the Border Patrol and its operations. Displays include vehicles and weapons both used and seized by agents.

You’ll also see pictures and interesting artifacts from some of the more interesting illegal border-crossing attempts. 

This small museum is free and will keep you entertained for about an hour. 

Transmountain Road

From the Border Patrol Museum, we continued west across Transmountain Road back to I-10. There are a few turnouts along the way, with picnic tables and nice views of El Paso from above.

If you’re interested in a little hiking, there is a parking area where you can get out and stretch your legs. There are also a couple of picnic areas along the road. Since we had walked all over downtown El Paso earlier in the morning, we skipped the hike but did stop for a quick picture of the city.

Along this road, you feel lightyears away from the city but it’s really only about 10-15 minutes outside of town. It really is a great place to escape the city.

Ode Brewing

Our next stop was Ode Brewing on the northwest side of town. This was a great place to kill a couple of hours and enjoy some tasty beer. We didn’t get any food, but the menu did look interesting.

I had the Juicy J (an East Coast Pale Ale), which is brewed with Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe hops. While I typically don’t like “hoppy” beer, I have discovered that I like these hops and the complex, fruity notes they produce.

Grant enjoyed the Porch Pounder Pils and the Hueco Wit (a Belgian Wit). He described both of these beers as easy-drinking and refreshing. 

Scenic Drive

On our way to dinner, we decided to check out the official Scenic Drive of El Paso. Seriously, the road is actually named “Scenic Drive” on Apple Maps and Google Maps. 

I’ll be honest, after driving across Transmountain Road we were a little skeptical that Scenic Drive would live up to its name. We were wrong. It actually was a better drive.

From Mesa Road, where Ode Brewing is located, you’ll take Kerby Avenue to Rim Road through an older neighborhood with small but well-kept homes. As you turn to Scenic Drive, the houses become much bigger and nicer. Quickly, though, you’re driving on the edge of the mountain overlooking the city with dramatic views.

A small parking area and overlook park provide amazing views of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. What makes this view better than those along Transmountain Road is the distance. From Scenic Drive, you are literally on the edge of town and can clearly see just about everything in town. You can even see the “big red X” of Ciudad Juarez, which is located on a piece of land that was exchanged in the Chamizal Treaty.

The drive is a great one and well worth the 5-10 minutes that it takes to get there from downtown El Paso.

Dinner at Cattleman’s Steakhouse

To finish off our day in El Paso we drove out to Cattleman’s Steakhouse for dinner and one last bit of exploring. Located about 30 minutes south of town at Indian Cliffs Ranch in Fabens, Cattleman’s Steakhouse is more than just a restaurant. It sits on a working ranch which is home to a large variety of animals and scenic desert vistas.

Indian Cliffs Ranch

We arrived early, shortly after 4:00, to give ourselves time to explore the ranch before sitting down to an early dinner. As we wandered through the grounds we saw all kinds of animals – rabbits, sheep, goats, deer, bison, llama, longhorn cattle, rattlesnakes and many different kinds of birds including peacocks, ostrich, pheasants, prairie chickens and several we couldn’t identify. 

This ranch really is a great place to explore and enjoy an afternoon. A small lake and badlands-style terrain make it easy to see why a number of movies have been filmed here.

There were a good number of people wandering around the grounds, but it really wasn’t too busy. I imagine that changes with warmer weather. It also probably helps that we arrived early.

At dinner, I got a sirloin and Grant opted for a New York strip. All entrees are served with a side (we both chose for a loaded baked potato). Additionally, you’ll get unlimited ranch beans, pineapple coleslaw and bread served family-style. 

I have to say, the steak was one of the best I’ve ever had. There was nothing fancy about it, but it was cooked just right and the flavor was perfect. A close second in terms of taste was the ranch beans, which had a chili-style sauce. Both the steak and the beans were a great complement to the bottle of Malbec that we enjoyed with our meal.

Cattleman’s Steakhouse was a great finish to our one day in El Paso and I highly recommend it for dinner, great desert scenery and entertainment. 

A Quick Return for the Sun Bowl

While not part of our official one day in El Paso itinerary, we did have the opportunity to return a few days after our original visit for the Sun Bowl. It was pure coincidence that we planned to still be in the area, in southern New Mexico, and were able to fit in a day trip back to El Paso for the Florida State vs. Arizona State football bowl game. 

As a Florida State alum, the outcome of the game wasn’t what we hoped for (Arizona State won 20-14) but we did have a good time. This actually was the first FSU game and first bowl game for Grant! Hopefully, our next football game together will have a better outcome.

Final Thoughts on Our One Day in El Paso Itinerary

Before our visit, I really wasn’t sure what to expect from El Paso. Sitting right on the border of both Mexico and New Mexico, on the far west side of Texas, I figured it would have its own identity, separate from the rest of Texas. I certainly was not wrong. 

El Paso definitely is not like most other cities in Texas. It is not necessarily a better city or a worse city; it’s just different. El Paso holds more of a southwest flair, which we enjoyed.

We found El Paso to be a very clean and welcoming city. As we walked through downtown, we saw little to no trash or graffiti. The roads and highways were well-maintained. I even commented on how nice the interstate was as we drove into town. 

For us, one day in El Paso was the perfect amount of time to see the highlights and enjoy the city. If you’re looking to do a lot of shopping or have any other specific interests, you could certainly spend more time here. El Paso is a great city with a lot to offer.

There are two state parks in the immediate area with opportunities for hiking, biking and other outdoor adventures. Within a couple of hours, you’ll find three National Parks: Guadalupe Mountains, home to the highest peak in Texas and Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands in New Mexico. While only White Sands NP was on our itinerary for this trip, we’ll certainly visit the others one day and would love to return to El Paso when we do.

We use Skyscanner to find deals on flights. Skyscanner has a great interface and compares tons of airlines for the best pricing and routing. Good Sam is normally regarded as a discount card for RVers at campgrounds and Camping World but anyone can use the 5 cents off a gallon at the pump at both Pilot and Flying J. 9 Fantastic Day Trips from El Paso Texas

El Paso is such a cool and interesting city. However, if you are in the area, you would be remissed to not explore the areas around El Paso as well. There’s incredible towns, national parks, historic sites, and more to see in the areas surrounding El Paso. Given the geography and history, some are a bit of a distance away, so we’ll try to keep it to a few hours from the city. So we help you explore the best day trips from El Paso.

There are even more if you go across the border, however for this post given complexities of border crossings, we will stick to the US side.

Las Cruces, New Mexico

Distance From El Paso : 45 miles (50 minutes)

Located north of El Paso, Las Cruces is a cool little city located near White Sands Missile Range and the Organ Mountains. The town has a good art and food scene as well as really nice locals.

Be sure to also check out the nearby town of Mesilla, with its cute little square and great restaurants and shops. Be sure to also pick up some pecans, as the area is surrounded by pecan farms.

If you have more time, check out the Organ Mountains, Dripping Springs is a popular hike. There’s also quite a few museums including the White Sands Missile Range Museum , Las Cruces Art Museum , and New Mexico Farm Museum .

Eat : La Posta De Mesilla serves up great Mexican food in a beautiful historic building

White Sands National Park

Distance from El Paso : 95 miles (90 minutes)

White Sands National Park contains the world’s largest concentration of “white sand” which is compromised of gypsum crystals. It really is quite incredible to see the literal sea of white.

There’s quite a bit to do in the area, including hiking,, stargazing, camping, and sledding. The sledding feels more like sledding on slushy snow does it does sand. It’s really some unique stuff.

If you have additional time, nearby Alamogordo has additional things to do. Known for it’s pistachios, you can even visit the “ world’s largest pistachio ” which is a cute statue to take photos with. Also lots of pistachio foods and drinks and even trees if you want to grow your own.

You can also explore the the New Mexico Museum of Space History as well as other great hiking in Lincoln National Forest and Oliver Lee Memorial State Park .

Eat : Brown Bag Deli in nearby Alamogordo is a great option to great sandwiches (bring one for your trip if you can). Large delicious portions.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Distance from El Paso: 149 miles (2 hrs. 20 minutes)

One of the largest cave systems in the world, Carlsbad contains over 119 discovered caverns. While only a few are open to visitors, there’s still quite a lot to see. Be sure to check out the “Big Room” which is the largest cave chamber in North America.

Entrance to Carlsbad requires a reservation from recreation.gov. We highly recommend also doing a ranger guided tour of a cave, which book up quickly!

For those with enough time or want to explore more, we recommend coupling with Guadalupe Mountains below.

Eat : Cactus Cafe cooks up a great selection of burgers and breakfast selection. Also some of the nicest staff I’ve met anywhere.

Tip : There’s no services between El Paso and Carlsbad. None. So be sure to have enough fuel for the trip. There is gas, food, and groceries however when you get near the park entrance.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Distance from El Paso: 113 miles (2 hours)

One of the least visited National Parks, Guadalupe Mountains contains over 86,000 acres of mountains and valleys that can be explore. Including the “roof of Texas”, the highest point in the state at 8,751 feet (2,667 m). Although, hikers should be careful as winds at the top can be pretty high (sometimes over 80 MPH) which may be difficult to believe near the trail head.

There’s quite a few great trails to explore in the park including the Devil’s Hall Trail, McKittrick Canyon, and El Capitan. There’s also some interesting history including old cabins, ranches, and even mail relay stops from long ago.

Eat : Bring your own food. There’s literally no services close by. the closest is White’s City 30 miles away.

Tip : There are no services between El Paso and Guadalupe Mountains. The closest services are 30 miles after in White’s City. Be sure to pack everything you need for the day and gas up your car before going.

Lordsburg, New Mexico

Distance from El Paso : 162 miles (2.5 hours)

Lordsburg is a small town along I-10 that originally came into existence during the railroad days. And while there’s not a lot to the town, there’s still quite a bit to see and do in the area.

Shakespeare Ghost Town was one of my favorite things in the area. It is an old ghost town come ranch come tourist area. The town grew up around the silver rush days in the area but then fell into disrepair as the rush moved elsewhere. It’s pretty impressive that these buildings still exist and that’s the coolest part about visiting. The folks who bought the land for a ranch have kept the area in the family and are still the ones to give daily tours. They breathe life and stories into these old historic relics.

There’s also a small veterans park to explore with old military equipment as well a World War II Internment and POW exhibits at Lordsburg-Hidalgo County Museum (which also has exhibits on ranching as well).

20 Miles north, for the wildlife, hiker, or angler, there’s Gila Lower Box Canyon managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Since removing livestock from the area, the river canyon has come to life with cottonwood, willows, smallmouth bass, catfish, birds, and more.

Eat : Ramona’s Cafe is a small place, but one of the best establishments in this small town. Delicious southwestern/Mexican cuisine choices.

Deming, New Mexico

Distance from El Paso : 102 miles (1 hr. 45 minutes)

Named for Mary Anne Deming Crocker, wife of one of the big railroad men, the town became the biggest railroad town between Las Cruces and Lordsburg. The town is also where the “silver spike” was struck, completing the second transcontinental railroad (the golden spike is in Promontory Point Utah).

The local Mimbr e s Museum and Custom house contains artifacts and exhibits that showcase early western history and culture. The town is also a gateway to great natural resources. From the nearby Rockhound State Park famous for its abundance of gems. Other great options to check out include Spring Canyon which is about 2 miles from Rockhound.

Eat : Check out Cactus Cafe for some delicious local tex-mex cuisine.

Truth or Consequences New Mexico

Distance from El Paso : 119 miles (2 hours)

The oddly named town is an interesting stop within New Mexico for those who love art, space, spas, and more. Originally named Hot Springs, the town took its current name from the radio game show Truth or Consequences.

The town is known for its “sweet” hot springs, which mean they don’t have the Sulphur smell that is characteristics of many other hot springs. This means you can enjoy the rich mineral water without having to hold your nose!

The town is also the gateway to space, as the location of the first “commercial spaceport”, Spaceport America located southeast of town. The spaceports most famous tenant is Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic that is taking reservations for tourist spaceflight. Visitation of the facility is possible via tours.

Tip : For those who are wanting to spend more time. T or C has become a destination for great hot springs glamping opportunities. There are several resorts in town that specialize in great options such as yurts, trailers, and more.

Silver City, New Mexico

Distance from El Paso : 154 miles (2.5 hours)

Named for its place in the silver industry (which is still ongoing in Silver city), the town has way more to offer than it’s mining heritage.

The old west town has a great set of history, a cute downtown, interesting places to eat and shop, as well as the gateway to the Gila National Forest.

One of the best things to do is explore the nearby Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument , located up a winding road in the mountains. Here you can explore the Puebloan Cliff Dwellings (like the ones in Mesa Verde National Park ), and its worth the visit, but be sure to go early as you need to be out by 5pm closing time.

City of Rocks State Park , the 1 square mile boulder strewn park features great hiking, biking, rock climbing, and more. It’s also a great site for bird watching as well.

The town itself has a great art scene, food scene, and of course its history. Several famous western personalities passed through here such as Billy the Kid, who was also arrested here for robbing a Chinese laundry before fleeing to Arizona.

Eat : Diane’s Restaurant is a great option for delicious breakfast, brunch, and dinners.

Skiing in the Lincoln National Forest

Distance from El Paso : Cloudcroft: 111 miles (2 hours); Apache: 153 miles (3 hours)

Winters are generally mild and great in Texas, but if you are like me, there are some winter activities one misses down south. Surprisingly there are two quite good ski areas that make a reasonable day trip from El Paso. Of the two, Ski Apache is certainly the farther, larger and more difficult of the mountains. For those looking for good skiing with more moderate challenge, Cloudcroft offers great skiing for a reasonable price. Great skiing within 2-3 hours of El Paso.

While neither is as big or well known as New Mexico’s most famous ski resort, Taos, it certainly won’t take you as long to go or cost as much.

Fun Fact : Ski Apache has been owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe since 1963!

Best Things to do in El Paso, Texas

1. scenic drive – overlook.

This old narrow two-lane road that winds along the edge of the mountain will give you the mesmerizing view of the city of El Paso, and Mexico in a distance. At day, you can see the mountain view and luxurious homes of El Paso, but at night is when it truly shines, the spectacular view of city lights is magical and will leave you in awe. 

2. Franklin Mountains State Park

The Franklin Mountains is America’s largest state park in an urban setting. Franklin Mountains State Park is a place for great hiking, biking, and rock climbing. You can visit in for the daylight or camp overnight at their campsite with other visitors. Bring a picnic basket and chill and after shop for gift items at the store.

3. Hueco Tanks

This historical site is an area of low mountains. Hueco Tanks, Hueco is a Spanish word meaning hollows, refers to the basin-like large rocks that hold water. Concordia Cemetery is a historic burial ground in El Paso, Texas. It is well known for being the final resting place of John Wesley Hardin, an Old West Outlaw and other several gunslingers and old west lawmen. Best Day Trips From El Paso to Take This Summer

While there are many border towns and cities spread across the United States, El Paso , Texas may be America’s quintessential border city. Situated at the far western tip of the Lone Star State, El Paso is very close to the border with the state of New Mexico to the north and west, while the city’s southern border along the Rio Grande River marks the international boundary with Mexico and the city of Ciudad Juarez. El Paso offers plenty of attractions to keep visitors occupied, but several great day trip options are also within a 90-minute drive of downtown.

Alamogordo, NM

Roughly a 90-minute drive northeast of El Paso, Alamogordo sits in the Tularosa Basin alongside the Sacramento Mountains. Home to about 31,000 residents, Alamogordo is most famous for its military and space connections with Holloman Air Force Base right next door. The first atomic bomb tests were held nearby in 1945, and key training and testing for the space program took place in the area in the 1950s and 1960s. Along with the New Mexico Museum of Space History, visitor attractions in Alamogordo include the American Armed Forces Museum, the Alameda Park Zoo (the oldest in the southwestern US), and a sculpture of "The World’s Largest Pistachio" at McGinn’s Pistachio Land!

White Sands National Park, NM

While you could combine a day trip to Alamogordo and White Sands National Park (they are only a 20-minute drive apart), White Sands is well worth exploring on its own. Unique among national parks in that it is completely surrounded by a military installation (the White Sands Missile Range), the park covers nearly 150,000 acres of sand dunes that are a striking white color due to the high gypsum content. Walking on the white sand and observing the rolling dunes—some of which are 60 feet high—offers an almost otherworldly feel. The park includes amenities such as a visitors center, picnic areas, marked hiking trails, and even dune sledding.

Franklin Mountains State Park, TX

The Franklin Mountains are the scenic backdrop for the city of El Paso, and the entrance to Franklin Mountains State Park (which is technically located within the city limits) is only about a 25-minute drive from the heart of downtown. With peaks reaching as high as 7,192 feet (North Franklin Mountain), the park offers spectacular views of El Paso and well beyond. Visitors can soak up the scenic views via driving trails or hiking trails, or enjoy activities like mountain biking, rock climbing, and picnicking. The park is full of flora, such as barrel cacti, yucca, and cottonwood, as well as fauna, including mule deer, mountain lions, and golden eagles.

Las Cruces, NM

Roughly a 55-mile drive north of El Paso, Las Cruces is New Mexico’s second-largest city, with a population of about 111,000. Nestled among the Dona Ana Mountains (to the north), Organ Mountains (to the east), and Rio Grande River (to the west), Las Cruces is literally surrounded by natural beauty. The nearby White Sands Missile Range is the main economic engine and employer, and while Las Cruces lacks a classic central business district, it has several bustling shopping and entertainment areas. Las Cruces is also home to New Mexico State University, and its campus on the south side of the city adds a boost of youthful vitality to the area.

Approximately a 90-minute drive northwest of El Paso, Deming, home to about 15,000 residents, is the seat of government and the major population area of rural Luna County, New Mexico. Site of the "silver spike" that marked the completion of the Southern Pacific Railroad (America’s second transcontinental line) in 1881, Deming retains a historic look and feel that has made it a popular location for movie shoots in recent years. Along with the picturesque downtown area, Deming is home to the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum, which contains local artifacts such as Native American painted pottery. Visitors to Deming can also explore two nearby state parks and several local wineries. 

Fort Bliss, TX

America’s second largest Army installation (after the nearby White Sands Missile Range), Fort Bliss, covers about 1,700 square miles. The visitor entry point, Fort Bliss Buffalo Soldier Gate, is fewer than 15 minutes from the center of El Paso. Entering the base requires you to bring a valid government ID and obtain a visitor’s pass at the gate, but the many visitor attractions at Fort Bliss make this minor inconvenience worthwhile. Highlights for visitors include the Replica Museum (which recreates 1800s Fort Bliss), the Noel Parade Field, the Fort Bliss and Ironsides Museums, the Fort Bliss Main Post Historic District, and the Freedom Crossing open-air shopping and entertainment center. 

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

If not for the international border that divides them, El Paso and Ciudad Juarez would form a single city with the Rio Grande River running through the middle. It typically takes about 30 minutes to drive from central El Paso to central Ciudad Juarez via one of the four border bridges, though this can vary greatly (as with any international border). Home to more than 1.5 million residents, Ciudad Juarez, is one of Mexico’s largest cities and a rapidly growing industrial center. The city has numerous historic structures and lively cultural and culinary scenes. Check out the La Rodadora museum, Ecoaventuras Trepachanga, for adventure fun, or stop into the Mercado Cuauhtémoc and shop to your heart's delight. However, the city has also been prone to high rates of violence in recent decades, so sensible travel precautions are recommended for all visitors.

Long before El Paso became an American city, its location served as a key passageway for the many peoples who have called this region of North America home.  Today’s El Paso remains a great base of operations from which to take day trips to explore everything from national parks to military bases and bustling cities. Franklin Mountains

El Paso has the benefit of the Franklin Mountains in the middle of the city – dividing it into the Eastside and Westside – meaning you’re never more than a short drive from a trailhead. Escape the bustle, pound the trails and get in some great exercise, all without leaving the city limits.

Mount Cristo Rey

Park, Natural Feature If you’re looking for some interesting history, Mount Cristo Rey is just a short drive away in Sunland Park, New Mexico. It is about a 4.5mi (7km) hike to the top, where you will encounter amazing views of both El Paso and Juárez, Mexico, plus a 29ft (9m) high limestone statue built in 1939. Mount Cristo Rey is isolated from El Paso and is difficult to find, so be sure to call or look online for directions.

Juárez, Mexico

Building Ciudad Juárez, in Chihuahua , Mexico , a city of 1.5m people, has long been known as a destination with great nightlife. Unfortunately, the violence that peaked in 2006 destroyed much of city’s after-hours activities. But that has been decreasing since 2012, and people are starting to enjoy the city once again. Bars, restaurants and clubs are all now reopening as a result of the push from the locals to create a vibrant new environment. And with everything from inexpensive movies to hip bars, you won’t find yourself bored in Juárez. It’s cheap, too; as a local reportedly once said, “With $3, I have money to blow in Juárez.”

Hueco Tanks State Park

Hueco Tanks State Park is a place for adventure. The rock climbing draws people from all over the country. But if that’s not your forte, you can go on one of the short hikes. Alternatively, visit the local cave paintings. Many have been destroyed by modern-day graffiti, so you can only see them on a guided tour. If it gets too hot, there are plenty of rocky outcrops where you can take a nap or read a book.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Park Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the tallest peak in Texas. You can find interesting fossils here while walking to your campsite or during your day hike. The park is full of west Texas wildlife, beautiful views and interesting history. Less than two hours from El Paso, it’s great for a weekend trip with family or friends.

Mesilla, New Mexico

Market, Building If you make the trip to Mesilla, taking the back roads through the pecan farms – where long stretches of pecan trees create a natural tunnel – will make the drive worth it. Mesilla itself is a fun little town with a historic plaza. There are farmer’s markets on Fridays and Sundays, selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to homemade and locally grown foods. And if that’s not enough, there are plenty of shops that surround the plaza and guided tours.

If there’s one thing New Mexico and West Texas are famous for, it’s putting green chili on – and in – everything. Sparky’s takes that to the extreme with a large variety of green-chili-infused food, including a green chili milk shake. If spiciness isn’t your thing, though, there are plenty other options on the menu, plus interesting décor and (occasionally) live music. Found in Hatch, NM, Sparky’s is just over an hour’s drive from El Paso, making it an easy day trip.

White Sands, New Mexico

With 275sqmi (712sqkm) of coverage, White Sands National Monument is the largest deposit of gypsum sand in the world, creating rolling dunes for miles. This is a beautiful spot to visit and admire the sand that looks like fallen snow. It’s a great place to take the kids for a day while you relax, read a book, get a tan or go on a hike. Be sure to check the website before going, as the park is often closed when White Sands Missile Range is performing missile tests.

Marfa, Texas

Natural Feature

If you are looking for a weekend getaway, Marfa might be the place for you. Historically a watering stop for the railroad, Marfa was turned into a small art community by an artist named Donald Judd back in the 1970s. Now, people from around the world visit this unique community. The town has plenty of great food and live music, and historical Fort Davis and Alpine (home of Big Bend Brewery) are just a short drive away.

Ruidoso, New Mexico

Park, Natural Feature, Building Whether you need some alone time in a cabin in the woods or want to do some winter skiing, Ruidoso has you covered. There are also plenty of cabins to rent for a romantic getaway for you and that special someone. There is skiing and snowboarding during the winter (at Ski Apache) and hiking during the summer. Or maybe you just want to hit the slots at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino. Whatever your preference, there is plenty to explore in Ruidoso.

So what are the best spots to visit for an El Paso resident? Here are four day trips from El Paso that you absolutely have to take. 

One of the more interesting day trips you can take from El Paso is a trip into Mexico. As mentioned before, El Paso is right on the Texas-Mexico border, meaning that a trip into the neighboring country is a very short one. However, things can be drastically different on the Mexican side of the border, even though the distance between the two locations isn’t that great.

Over by the city of El Paso, the borders of Texas, Mexico, and New Mexico unite, and for those headed west on I-10, it’s that final point where you’ll have to say goodbye to the Lone Star State. Just to give you a better idea of what it really means to be that far west within the state: El Paso is actually closer to San Diego (three states over) than it is to Houston.

In less than an hour, you can make your way from El Paso over to Las Cruces, the second-largest city in New Mexico. Las Cruces is known for its rich history having served as the homeland for many Indian Nations and their descendants, and having been a stop along the Camino Real. 2. White Sands National Park

Who said you need to go to the beach to enjoy some gorgeous white sand? Rather than offering its visitors forests or mountains, White Sands National Park in New Mexico features 275 square miles of sand dunes, making it the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Don’t even think about bottling up any of that beautiful sand as a souvenir since that’s a federal crime. What you can do, however, is sled down the sand with one of the plastic snow-saucers you can get at the gift shop, hike one of the established trails, and ride along the scenic Dunes Drive by bike or car.

The park does offer primitive backcountry camping—unfortunately just not right now. Don’t fret though since you can find a few other campgrounds in the area to post up for the weekend.

3. Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Everyone talks about Big Bend National Park, but many forget that Texas has another national park within its borders: Guadalupe Mountains National Park .

One of this park’s claims to fame is that it has the highest natural point in the state, Guadalupe Peak, which stands at 8,751 feet above sea level. It normally takes between six and eight (mostly strenuous) hours to hike to the top and back, but boy, are the views from up there worth it. If you’re looking for something less challenging there are over 80 miles of trails to choose from.

The park has three developed campgrounds for tents and RVs as well as wilderness campgrounds for backpackers. Anyone staying at the park should get excited for some pretty spectacular starry skies.

4. Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Keep going past Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and you’ll be at another national park in no time—this one being Carlsbad Caverns National Park . Close to half a million people visit this spot each year to see the incredible rock formations underground. A nice aspect of the experience is that you don’t need to be on a guided tour to explore the cavern. Instead, you can set your own page along one of the two 1.25-mile trails: the Big Room Trail and the steeper Natural Entrance trail.

To make sure your visit goes off without a hitch, make a reservation ahead of time online or by phone. There’s no entering without that reservation and you can’t make one at the park! Also, if you want to camp know that there’s only primitive backcountry camping available on the premises. Otherwise, it’s off to accommodations in White’s City or Carlsbad for you.

5. Ruidoso, New Mexico

Situated next to the Sierra Blanca mountain range, Ruidoso is popular among ski bums who come in droves to visit the Ski Apache resort for some warm-weather powder skiing. But Ski Apache isn’t just fun during the wintertime. During the summer season, the resort opens up mountain biking trails, ziplining, and a gondola. As you stand among dunes of soft sand that stretch to the horizon, you may find yourself in disbelief that you’re still in Texas. To fully enjoy the unique environment, rent a sand disk from the headquarters and slide on down. Otherwise, you’re free to roam wherever you want since there are no designated trails.

Monahans Sandhills State Park does have campsites with electricity, and you can make a reservation for one of them online. Otherwise, you’ll find some affordable hotels in the city of Monahans. While in the city proper, you might want to check out the Million Barrel Museum , where you can see a giant oil tank that matches the size of three football fields.

8. Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park may not be one of the most well-visited parks in the country, but that says more about its remoteness than it does about the wonders it has to offer. And there’s really a lot considering the park is larger than the whole state of Rhode Island.

Here, you can hike up mountains, along the river, and across the desert. You can kayak, canoe, or raft through river canyons. You can see an astonishing amount of stars in the night sky. You can go for a drive along one the scenic roads, some paved and some not. Basically, you’ll realize early on in your visit that one weekend just isn’t enough to experience Big Bend. But two days is certainly better nothing, and there’s camping within the park so you can spend more time adventuring and less time traveling back and forth from your accommodations.

9. Tucson, Arizona

About the same amount of time it would take you to drive from El Paso to Big Bend National Park, you can head in the other direction and get to Tucson. This large city is chock full of attractions for all ages. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum , Pima Air & Space Museum , and Tucson Botanical Gardens are just some of the popular destinations for visitors and locals alike.

A day in juarez from el paso.

“Call me as soon as you’re back across the border,” said my mother. “Text me every hour,” said my girlfriend. “Just don’t go to Juarez. It’s not safe,” said pretty much everyone I told of my plan to cross the border from El Paso for a day. However, despite all the trepidation from both my loved ones and random strangers, I feel a calling to see Juarez. I can’t effectively write about El Paso without discussing the border, and I can’t write about the border without crossing it. So on a warm May morning, I walk over the bridge, leaving the US behind for the oft-maligned Mexican metropolis of Juarez.

As comfortable as I am traveling solo in foreign countries where I don’t speak the language, having only a day to see Juarez – and yes, with the city’s reputation in the back of my mind – I charter Rich Wright of Juarez Walking Tours for a private excursion. He meets me on the American side of the border, and promises to drop me back off on the American side of the border, which makes my mom a bit more at ease. We pay the 50 cent per person bridge toll for pedestrians, and set off across the mighty Rio Grande, which is anything but mighty these days between lack of rain and snow in the Rockies and dams further upriver.

It was under this bridge that images of the most recent immigration crisis emerged, thousands of refugees from poverty- and war-torn Central American countries waiting for the chance to apply for asylum. Such images are heartbreaking; the response by the American right to them was even more so. Rich and I stop for a moment to talk about the river as the border, the monstrosity that is the new border wall, and the drought conditions, and then cross to the other side. After a very brief search of Rich’s backpack – and no passport check – we are in Mexico, in Ciudad Juarez, the city of Juarez.

Until 1888, Juarez was called El Paso del Norte, the passage to the north. Founded by Friar Garcia de San Francisco in 1659, El Paso del Norte was created as Spanish conquistadors moved north from Mexico into “New” Mexico, ultimately reaching as far as Santa Fe. As in other parts of the Americas, they converted the local populations they found, and built a mission, Guadalupe de los Mansos, on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, around which grew the city. (Modern El Paso, which kept the name of the original city that is now Juarez, joined the party later, and was originally just an extension of a single city on both banks.)

The mission still stands, and sits at the heart of Juarez, right next to a massive and beautiful cathedral that, while it looks old, was only built in 1941. It is from here that the city spread out, and Rich points out the original city hall, and the oldest bar in the city – one of the first businesses built – where we have one of several drinks we would consume on such a hot day.

As we walk, Rich delights me with stories of Juarez’ history. Did you know the Mexican Revolution began here? I didn’t, but tales of Pancho Villa, Francisco Madero, and the dictator Porfirio Diaz (for whom a street in El Paso is named, to my chagrin) bring the terrible violence of the period to life. Rich supplements these with photos of the streets we pass as they would have looked during different periods of the city’s storied past.

One stop we make is La Fiesta, a recently restored club that has yet to reopen thanks to Covid. Richly decorated, it is just one of a number of such huge and lavish clubs that once existed all over Juarez. From prohibition through the 1960s, Juarez was similar to Havana: a playground for Americans to escape, to drink, and to experience the high life for a smaller amount of money. These clubs once hosted many of the top American bands and singers, who came here to polish their acts before going on American tours.

Other remnants of this period of immense prosperity remain. The Kentucky Club, just across the border, has a long history catering to American tourists – and makes a great margarita for a fraction of what it would cost in El Paso. However, the days of large numbers of Americans crossing the border seem to be over, at least for now.

From 2003 to 2013, Juarez was one of the leading cities in the world in murders. Drug cartels battled for control of the priceless routes from here into the US, and the Great Recession led to the cartels being one of the few sources of well-paying “jobs” for everyday Mexicans trying to feed their families. Today, that violence is much lessened. While in 2010, Juarez saw more than 3,600 murders, 2021 only had 1,400 which, while up from the 2015 low of 311, is still significantly less than the peak. (Much of this can also probably be attributed to the recession features of the current Covid era, and the reopening of the border and corresponding return of many jobs has seen 2022 at a three-year low so far.)

Unfortunately, the period of violence and the inability of that reputation to stop clouding the city has led to much of downtown Juarez – the border area – to be abandoned. Hotels and businesses that catered to Americans are gone, stores have closed, and even the central market is shuttered. And, with cross border traffic not picking back up (Rich tells me that the only Americans who cross the border are those with families still in Mexico, those with business interests here, and the occasional out of town tourist like me), a large percentage of these buildings are simply shells of what were once seemingly beautiful edifices.

While a few restaurants and bars right along the border – on Av. Benito Juarez – have been able to survive, just a few blocks away, all that is left is abandoned facades. Many have been covered with murals, but while beautiful, they are not a substitute for the thriving businesses of the past. And while Covid is to blame for some closures, the fact is that many of these buildings have been empty for a decade or more.

We stop for tacos in a tiny restaurant off a busy pedestrian marketplace – locals only, for the most part, although I can easily imagine this being a hub for tourist souvenirs in a slightly different universe – and talk about the future. There is money in Juarez, a lot of money. The suburbs have beautiful gated communities, home to millionaires and billionaires who have made fortunes on everything from cross-border commerce to manufacturing (Juarez is a hub for foreign company factories like Boeing and Bosch.) But without a significant focus on restoration of the border area, it is likely tourism will never return. And while a few local entrepreneurs have done a little, such as the restoration of La Fiesta, there doesn’t seem to be much appetite for trying to rebuild Juarez as a destination for American tourists. It is too bad, because even in a few hours here, I see the potential.

Our tour ends with another uneventful border crossing. A five peso coin into a turnstile is all that’s needed on the Mexican side. About six feet across the US border on the bridge we are asked for our passports, just to show we aren’t going to try to seek asylum. (While I’ll be talking more about this in another article specifically on the border, it is disgusting that this takes place, specifically flying in the face of American law, which allows for an asylum request at a port of entry, which this is. However, without an immigration attorney present, it is unlikely anyone would be aware of this, and would be turned away by armed authorities.) We pass a group of people being deported, walking single file with armed escorts. A ten minute wait inside a building to have our passports scanned, and then we are back in the US. I bid farewell to Rich and contemplate what I experienced today.

For starters, I never felt unsafe, not for a single instant. Part of that was due to my amazing guide. Rich knows Juarez, knows a ton of people, and speaks Spanish. Part of it was the ever-present warmth of the Mexican people, something I’ve experienced everywhere I’ve traveled in this incredible country. And part of it was the fact that the violence in Juarez, while present (as violence is present in many major cities in the world), is incredibly overstated, especially during the day in the center of the city.

My second takeaway is that Juarez is a cool place. No, it isn’t full of amazing tourist sites (although a small museum to the actor/singer Tin Tan was pretty cool, along with the cathedral and mission), but it has a character that is unique to this border city. There are lovely pedestrian areas, nice parks, and beautiful street art. Old colonial architecture, good food, and cheap – and strong – drinks round out the experience.

Finally, I reflect that I am welcome here. People smile at me, greet me, shake my hand. And this is in spite of the fact that just a few steps down the road, my country has built a monument – the wall – that sends a strong message that nobody here would be welcome in my home. There is no animosity, no glaring at this gringo who dares flaunt my American-ness in their home. Would we do the same under reverse circumstances? I’d guess not.

El Paso is a cool city. But to truly understand it, to fully grasp what it means to be a border city, you must cross into Juarez, even if only for a few hours on a walking tour with Rich. What you’ll find will surprise you: a city rich in history full of amazing people, and a place that will hopefully return to the prosperity it deserves soon. Visit Juarez. You won’t regret it.

I recently visited Juarez not long ago and was amazed at the kindness and hospitality of the people there. Having just recently spent time in New Orleans, Louisiana where violence, homelessness and drug overdoses were the daily norm, Juarez felt like a safe haven in comparison.

I studied Juarez’s history, especially from 2006 to 2012, and understood the violence that ensued in that time frame. But, in 2012, the violence in Juarez practically stopped, according to my research. And, in my 2022 visit I saw no signs or residual affects of any type of violence in that beautiful city. Even law enforcement personnel were friendly and civil.

I suppose one has to see things personally to understand reality.

There is still violence in Juarez, but as with you, I didn’t experience any feeling of being unsafe while I was there

I am a engineering professor in El Paso with reasonable Spanish proficiency. This article is accurate and the people of Juárez are the most hospitable in the world. My wife and I cross 4 to 8 times a month and never have problems. Police are professional and everyone is kind. My only addition to this post is that most of the city is not accessible by walking. Some great restaurants require a car to reach and are outstanding. Driving in Juárez isn’t impossible but you can UBER anywhere easily. I drive and have express lane access to return quickly north. Crossing south can be dreadful during rush hour. ¡Amor por Juárez!

I am originally from El Paso, Texas I am now living in Orlando Florida. I miss El Paso so much. People are friendly back there not so much here in Orlando Orlando is beautiful, green and lush but I still miss El Paso, New Mexico, and Juarez so very very much. I miss the days of old when you could come and go as you pleased to Juarez. I miss the mercado where you could sit and listen to the Mariachis and see the ladies making tortillas from scratch with their hands. I miss seeing Scenic Drive in El Paso, Transmountain Dr and the star on the mountain. What a beautiful view.

Apparently the author did not have the pleasure of being kidnapped by the police and held for ransome as l was. Also he didn’t have the transit police steal his car or intimidate him with arrest to steal his money. One time a man from El Paso told me he knew of the transit police chief talking about targeting Americans and the money extorted was used for buying his multiple homes. Too bad for the author not having to deal with interior immigration officers who will not allow further travel unless you pay a bribe. Other than that one might have a good time Don’t be surprised that those who are “connected” have some kind of tie with crooked / criminal people . Many people travel without problem and many others serious problems while over the border.

You are correct. I didn’t have any of those experiences, and I know others have had some traumatic things happen while in Juarez – or in any number of other places in the world. All I can do is write about my own experience, which was entirely positive.

I lived in El Paso from 1973 to 1981. My husband was training at Beaumont Army Hospital. I absolutely loved my years in El Pas. Going to Juárez offered so many fun adventures. Saw the first bull ever spared at a Bullfight there.great restaurants , fun shopping. Never felt threatened but followed the rules.

El Paso prepares for year's warmest day: Near 90-degree forecast expected April 12

El Pasoans will experience the warmest day of the year Friday, April 12, with an expected high nearing 90 degrees.

Temperatures could reach up to 88 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered clouds and breezy conditions will result in El Paso narrowly missing its first 90-degree day, according to most weather models.

However, a few models show a very slight chance that this could still happen, according to the National Weather Service.

As of April 11, the highest recorded temperature in El Paso has been 84 degrees.

With warmer days ahead, here are some outdoor activities to start thinking about:

Ascarate Park

The large park nestled in El Paso’s Lower Valley is now open for extended hours. Its 48-acre lake is ideal for kayaking and fishing under the warm desert sun. While the popular paddle boat and canoe rentals are no longer available, visitors can still bring kayaks and boats. Depending on the season, the lake is also home to trout, catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill.

 Fishing licenses must be purchased from Texas Parks and Wildlife or most sporting goods stores.

Hours: 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m. until fall; location: 6900 Delta Drive.

Franklin Mountain State Park

The 70,000-acre park in the mountainous terrain of the Franklins has also announced extended hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. If explorers prefer to hike in a group and want to learn more about the landscape’s geology and history, nature-guided tours are held on the first and third weekends of the month.         

As warmer weather approaches, reservations for day passes and camping are strongly encouraged. They can be made online or by phone.

Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday (until September); location: 2900 Tom Mays Access Road.

The day-use fee is $5.

Kayak on the Rio Grande

For those looking for adventure in their backyard with a bit of guidance, Southwest Expeditions Adventure Tours can lead the way. Spend a morning learning how to navigate a river and paddle a kayak on the Rio Grande in Las Cruces or embark on a treasure hunt in the region’s most historic — and even haunted — areas. They plan on organizing a kayaking event in May at Anthony, Texas.

The service offers events throughout the year or can tailor a tour to suit one’s interests, according to its website. Prices range depending on the tour.

Visit a vineyard

Sipping some local wine amid a peaceful vineyard could be the perfect way to soak up upcoming warmer weather. El Pasoans can make the quick drive to dreamlike spots like La Vina Winery, Sombra Antigua, or Zin Valle Vineyards. All feature patios in lush landscapes, beautiful views, and various locally made red and white wines.

 La Vina : open noon-5:30 p.m. Monday, Thursday-Sunday; location 4201 NM-28 Anthony, New Mexico.

Sombra Antigua: Open 3-9 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon-9 p.m. Saturday-Sunday; location: 430 La Vina Road Anthony, New Mexico.

Zin Valle: Open noon-5 p.m Wednesday-Sunday; location: 7315 Canutillo-La Union Road.

El Paso Zoo

The El Paso Zoo provides hours of fun under the sun for the entire family given its animal exhibits, treehouse playground, and splash pad. Children also enjoy a ride at the endangered species carousel or learning about animals at its wildlife amphitheater.

Hours: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday; location: 4001 E Paisano Drive.

Admission ranges from $8.95 to $15.95.

The Week Ahead: Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Earth Day Celebrations

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, is a worldwide day of education about environmental issues facing the planet. In the Borderland, you can participate in an array of events to mark the day:

• “ Planet v. Plastic ” is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the city of El Paso’s Municipal Services Center, 7968 San Paulo Drive in the Lower Valley. The free event will include interactive activities for kids, a mascot dance-off, vendors, food trucks, informational booths and entertainment by Fungi Mungle and the Pro Wrestling Legacy. Live Active El Paso will hold a 3k walk/run starting at 10:15 a.m. The city’s Animal Services will have mobile pet adoptions.
• Party for the Planet : The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is celebrating wildlife and conservation as part of Earth day with its Party for the Planet event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21. Cultural dancers and young musicians, a presentation titled Saving our Endangered Species, special animal programs and conservation exhibitors will be part of the event. An enrichment activity with Obi the baby giraffe celebrating its first birthday is at 11:30 a.m. Saturday; while Khaleesi the orangutan's ninth birthday with a question-and-answer session at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. • The Chamizal National Park will host an Earth Day Cleanup Hike starting at 5 p.m. Monday, April 22. Participants should meet at the parking lot, 800 S. San Marcial St. The event includes a park cleanup where participants can also learn about the park and its surrounding area. The Chamizal National Memorial was established as a National Park Service unit in 1974, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
• Critical Mass El Paso , a group of outdoor enthusiasts who promote cycling and sharing the streets, will hold a “Kidicalmass” Earth Day Family Ride and Picnic starting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 21, at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta. The event includes a 3-mile family-friendly bike ride along the Playa Drain Trail, kite flying and a picnic. The ride begins at 11 a.m., with kite flying and the picnic at noon. Bring plenty of water, a helmet, knee, wrist and elbow pads.

EPSO Presents ‘Tone Poems’

The El Paso Symphony Orchestra will present “Tone Poems in Concert” at the Plaza Theatre, 125 Pioneer Plaza in Downtown, this weekend. EPSO Conductor Bohuslav Rattay will lead Debussy’s “Afternoon of a Faun,” Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, Rachmaninoff’s “The Isle of the Dead” and Gershwin’s “American in Paris.” The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20. Ahead of the event, concertgoers can learn about the composers and music pieces with Program Notes with Nathan Black at 6:30 p.m. both days at the Philanthropy Theatre next to the Plaza Theatre. Tickets range from $17 to $49.  Information : epso.org

Selena Fashion Show at The Market

Selena’s style is almost as iconic as her music. To celebrate her birthday month, El Paso Community College and Bazaar Models will hold a Selena Fashion Show from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at The Market at Camp Cohen, 9700 Gateway Blvd. North. The event will showcase student fashion projects inspired by the queen of Tejano music’s iconic wardrobe. The event is in conjunction with the El Paso Museum of Art, whose exhibit “ Selena Forever / Siempre Selena ” is on display through February 2025. 

Full Moon Fiesta More Than Star Gazing

The Frontera Land Alliance, a nonprofit that works to preserve open spaces in the Borderland, is holding a family event celebrating the full moon in El Paso on Tuesday, April 23. The Full Moon Fiesta will include guided trail hikes, hands-on activities, Native American storytelling and star gazing at the El Paso Museum of Archeology, 4301 Woodrow Bean Transmountain Drive, from 6 to 9 p.m. Moonrise time is expected at about 7:35 p.m. Admission is free. Information : El Paso Museum of Archeology .

Aboard the Streetcar

Entertainment aboard the El Paso Streetcar this week includes rock, opera and Tejano music. Students from the Let There Be Rock Schools will perform at 6 p.m. Friday, April 19. At 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, riders will be treated to a special Read-and-Ride event with the El Paso Opera ’s Resident Artists pre-show tour to “Sunday in the Park with George” performance in May. A Tribute to Selena by Legna Villalobos will celebrate the Tejano legend’s birthday week at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20. 

Boarding for all three free events will be at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center stop on Santa Fe and Henry Trost streets. The events are first-come, first-serve. The electric cars run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday; noon to 11 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. They travel on a 4.8-mile route along two loops through Downtown and Uptown El Paso. You can track the streetcar with the free Ride Sun Metro app. Information : sunmetro.net/streetcar .
