Driving & Parking

We recommend that participants driving to the TD Five Boro Bike Tour park on Staten Island in the morning.

NOTE : Cars parked along the Tour route will be towed and impounded.

Note that some subway stations do not accommodate bikes. The MTA requests that participants do not bring bikes on the L/M/G trains. Visit www.mta.info for customized travel directions using TripPlanner, or call the MTA for more information by dialing 511. Check the schedule for changes as Tour day approaches.

Charity · Community · Health & Wellness

El Tour de Tucson is now preparing to host the 41st year for what we think is one of the premier bicycling events in the country.  We hope you participate in this year’s event on November 23, 2024.   You won’t be alone given that annually over 9,000 cyclists participate in the renowned and popular event.

Charity, community, health and wellness are what Perimeter Bicycling and El Tour are all about. They all go hand-in-hand when it comes to building awareness for a bike ride that has been part of the Tucson community for nearly four decades.

Did you know that El Tour de Tucson enables nonprofit, charitable agencies to raise funds for their respective organizations?   Learn about their programs and sign up to ride on their teams here.  Since 1983, Perimeter Bicycling events have raised nearly $121 million for local and international charitable organizations.

event tour bike

Tour de France veterans George Hincapie, Bobby Julich, and Christian Vande Velde will take a 20-minute ride alongside other cyclists at the Greenville Cycling Classic , presented by Prisma Health, today at One City Plaza.

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie will ride alongside the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Beginning at 3 p.m., men's and women's professional and amateur cycling will occur along Main and Coffee Street. Bike races will continue through 9 p.m. to determine a winner in nine divisions, ranging from 30-minute rides to a 70-lap competition.

This race is part of the Speed Week race series, with nine races in South Carolina and Georgia.

Who is George Hincapie?

Hincapie is a former professional racing cyclist who competed alongside Lance Armstrong as his domestique or assisting rider on the U.S. PostalPro Cycling Team. He is also known for helping Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans to their first Tour de France victories in 2007 and 2011.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, still the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.

How do I attend the Greenville Cycling Classic?

The racing path will expand between East North Street, East McBee Avenue, South Laurens Street, and South Brown Street.

10 unmissable cycling events and experiences to plan in 2022

From multi-day gravel rides to cycling's greatest race, here are 10 unmissable experiences to plan in 2022

John Whitney

This feature was originally published in issue 388 of Cycling Plus magazine .

With a bit of luck, we’ll be back doing all the things we love best in cycling through 2022.

We’ve scoured the road and gravel calendar and picked out the key dates to look out for.

Here are 10 of the best experiences and blockbuster events in the UK and abroad that you need to make an appointment with through the coming year.

1. Ride the closest thing to the original 1903 Tour de France

Passo di Gavia, Italy

Okay, so the equipment and navigation at our disposal in 2022 are radically improved from over a century ago, but in terms of spirit, accessibility to enter and a stripping of all the bells and whistles of bike racing, the Transcontinental Race, the self-supported solo bike race across the roads of Europe, is a magnificent echo of those early Tours.

After two editions lost to the pandemic, race number eight returns on 24 July with its now traditional start in Geraardsbergen, Belgium and a finish in Burgas, Bulgaria, more than 4,000km away.

En-route, riders must pass through checkpoints in the Czech Republic, Italy (on the Passo di Gavia, no less), Montenegro and Romania.

The race, says the organisation, is “rider against rider, living by their wits alone, without caravan or entourage guided by personal integrity, mutual respect and a collective commitment to equality. At the sharp end, it is a beautifully hard bicycle race, simple in design but complex in execution.”

  • What? Transcontinental Race
  • Where? Geraardsbergen, Belgium to Burgas, Bulgaria
  • When? 24 July
  • Details: Transcontinental

2. Try the new RideLondon

Female cyclists riding past Nelson's Column in London

Make a date with the all-new RideLondon festival. It’s got a new date (Sunday 29 May), a new partner (Surrey is out, Essex is in) and a new format (all events take place on the same day).

The future of the sportive, the RideLondon 100, looked to be in doubt following Surrey council’s withdrawal of support, but Essex has stepped into the breach.

The route is still to be revealed, but the sportive will start in central London, head out into the Essex countryside for 60 miles and return to the capital. It will be accompanied by a three-day women’s WorldTour pro race (27-29 May) and closed-road family rides.

The first 10,000 entries for the sportive have sold out but you can still enter the ballot, which closes on 20 January. Entry is £89.

  • What? RideLondon festival
  • Where? London
  • When? 29 May
  • Details: RideLondon

3. Get stuck into multi-day gravel rides

Enjoy spectacular views of the Atlas Mountains as you navigate 335km in Morocco.

We’ve been big fans of the multi-day Haute Route road sportive series, and last month saw the 10th anniversary of their definitive Alps event.

Welcome, then, to the gravel version. Gravel Epic is organised by the same folks who, for 2022, have two events, in Marrakech (31 March to 2 April) and Switzerland (23 to 25 September).

Like the road events, Gravel Epic will have a focus on point-to-point racing, high mountains and gruelling, if sporting, daily distances, with fully supported off-the-bike logistics meaning your bags are transported between stages.

Entry, accommodation and food for the events is €799 for the Marrakech event, while entry alone for Switzerland is €449. If three days of gravel racing doesn’t scratch the itch, take a look at Desertus Bikus (23 April to 1 May), a 1,250km route through Spain from the Bay of Biscay in the north to the Costa del Sol in the south.

This ride, like the Transcontinental Race, is self-supported and self-guided, with 90 per cent navigated by road. But while you start and end by water, three of the four checkpoints to be visited, hence the name, are in different deserts.

  • What? Desertus Bikus
  • Where? Anglet, France to Nerja, Spain
  • When? 23 April to 1 May
  • Details: Desertus Bikus

4. Experience the Tour de France in the world’s greatest cycling city

People cycling in Copenhagen

Foreign starts to the Tour have become increasingly common since the 1970s and, on 1 July 2022, Denmark (Copenhagen) becomes the ninth country to host one.

That means it’s a complete Grand Départ bingo card for what are widely regarded as the three best cities to cycle in the world (Amsterdam held it in 1954, Utrecht in 2015).

In fact, the Copenhagenize Index, a comprehensive ranking of bike-friendly cities from the eponymous urban design company, ranked Copenhagen as number one at the last count in 2019. An impressive 44 per cent of all trips to work and education in the Danish capital are by bike, with 673,000 bikes in the city alone.

So yes, go to witness the world’s biggest bike race set off, but stay to experience cycling that’s truly integrated into a city.

  • What? Tour de France 2022 Grand Départ
  • Where? Copenhagen, Denmark
  • When? 1 July

5. Ride one of the UK's toughest long-distance sportives

The Dartmoor Legend is billed as ‘the toughest cycling challenge in the South West.

“Princetown is renowned for taking prisoners,” say the organisers, referring to the town’s Dartmoor Prison, which dates back to the 1800s.

“The Dartmoor Legend will be no exception!”

The ride (9 July) certainly matches that billing, with a 200-mile (323km) route traversing the national park that, by the end, will have seen you climb 18,000ft (5,500m).

The distance is matched by the cap on participants, which is limited to 200. You also have a time limit of 20 hours!

One month before the ride, you will receive a detailed manual as to what’s in store for the ride, which costs £100. You’ll start in Princetown, and pass through the town three times before the finish.

  • What? Dartmoor Legend
  • Where? Princetown, Devon
  • When? 9 July
  • Details: Dartmoor Legend

6. Bury your head in one of this year's best cycling books

Andy McGrath’s God is Dead: The Rise and Fall of Frank Vandenbroucke, Cycling’s Great Wasted Talent (Bantam Press)

Prefer to stay at home or want some holiday reading? Here are three picks from the latest cycling releases.

Former German pro cyclist Jan Ullrich resurfaced last year after a troubled period in his private life, and finished the 312km Mallorca gran fondo in October. It’s timely, then, that pro-cycling journalist Daniel Friebe will release his biography of Ullrich this year.

Twenty-five years since ‘Der Kaiser’ won the Tour de France, the book – provisional title The Best There Never Was (Pan Macmillan) – will delve deep into the backstory of one of the great enigmas of modern cycling.

Also confirmed for 10 March publication is Rouleur editor Andy McGrath’s God is Dead: The Rise and Fall of Frank Vandenbroucke, Cycling’s Great Wasted Talent (Bantam Press).

The Belgian could ride a bike as fast as he lived life off it and was a talent ultimately lost to his addictions before his premature death in 2009.

A Cyclist’s Guide to the Pyrenees by Peter Cossins

Meanwhile, journalist and author Peter Cossins lives in the Pyrenees and he’s used his local knowledge to produce his latest book, A Cyclist’s Guide to the Pyrenees (£16.99, Great Northern Books).

Cossins details all the climbs made famous by the Tour de France, and plenty more obscure ascents that the world’s biggest bike race could never contemplate squeezing in, and links them together to create routes that can be tackled in a day or tour.

7. Explore new parts of the country with Cycling UK

Vedangi Kulkarni (freelance) and Katherine Moore (Unpaved podcast) concentrate on the gravel descent down to Cape Cornwall during a recce ride of Cycling UK's West Kernow Way, June 2021. The 230km route is part of the EU-funded EXPERIENCE project to develop sustainable year-round tourism activities in Cornwall.

Charitable membership organisation Cycling UK has been mightily busy in the last few years, creating multi-terrain, circular bikepacking routes , including Cornwall’s West Kernow Way and the King Alfred’s Way in the south of England.

It’s launching a couple more routes in 2022, in Kent and Norfolk, but rather than vast, multi-day circular or point-to-points, routes in these two locations will be based around ‘hubs’, or cycle-friendly places that have all the accoutrements cyclists need to enjoy a day or more of a riding break.

Think multiple options based out of the same place, plus bike shops, eateries and the like. The exciting Kent and Norfolk projects are a pilot for future hubs across the country.

  • What? Cycling UK's new long-distance routes
  • Where? Kent and Norfolk
  • When? Launch date TBC
  • Details: Cycling UK

8. Tackle an American gravel race

Ian Boswell riding the 2021 Unbound gravel race

The US is where gravel riding as we know it now was born, but differences in terrain and road-network design make gravel over the Atlantic largely very different to the UK and elsewhere.

In the US, gravel roads are so extensive and so free of highway-bound traffic, that huge races can be plotted exclusively on dirt and gravel roads. Travel-restrictions permitting, 2022 could be your chance to try one.

The 200-mile Unbound Gravel on 4 June (formerly the Dirty Kanza) in Kansas’ Flint Hills remains the most prestigious, but there are so many more.

The country-wide Belgian Waffle Ride series are mixed road/off-road races, inspired by the terrain of the northern Classics pro races.

The ‘Black’ course of SBT Gravel in Colorado on 14 August is a huge day out, too: 229km and 2,743m of elevation starting at over 2,000m above sea level.

  • What? Unbound Gravel
  • Where? Emporia, Kansas
  • When? 4 June

9. Go retro at the Eroica Britannia

Goodwood Revival 2021 - The Duke of Richmond, sir chris hoy

The export of vintage bike festival Eroica, from its home in Tuscany, around the world has been a huge success story, not least with the British version.

But the festival, which is centred around a ride that participants do on bikes and in gear and clothing that pre-dates 1987, has a change of owner and location for 2022.

It was announced in the summer that the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex had bought the festival and will stage it in the South Downs.

“The stories of heroism from cycling’s glorious past will come alive as we create a festival that will delight cycling fans from around the world,” says the Duke of Richmond, who owns the estate. It takes place from 6-7 August.

  • What? Eroica Britannia
  • Where? Goodwood Estate, West Sussex
  • When? 6-7 August

10. Witness an international event in Britain

Geraint Thomas wins the 2014 Commonwealth Games road race in Glasgow.

For the third time this century, the Commonwealth Games returns to Britain, this time in Birmingham (28 July to 8 August). The competition in track cycling is strong, with Australia, New Zealand and Canada all big contenders at international level.

There’s also the quirk of seeing riders who usually compete under the Union Jack instead competing under different flags, with Geraint Thomas and Mark Cavendish riding for Wales and the Isle of Man respectively. The track events are taking place in London's Olympic velodrome.

Road-race fans can, as ever, enjoy ticketless viewing if they head to Warwick, where riders will tackle laps of a 16km course (7 for women, 10 for men).

  • What? Cycling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games
  • Where? London (track cycling), Warwick (road cycling)
  • When? 28 July to 8 August

CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

Cyclists of all ages and abilities are expected to participate in the Tour de Brisbane sponsored by Transurban throughout Brisbane and fundraise for The Common Good , an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.

To deliver a safe and secure event for riders and spectators, there will be major road closures and changed traffic conditions throughout Brisbane under the professional management of Queensland Police Service and Altus Traffic Control.

Motorists are advised to make alternate travel arrangements and give extra time to reach your destination as your normal route may experience delays or be unavailable.

On the event day, map apps such as Google, Waze, and Apple Maps will automatically calculate a detour around the road closures.

Roads will be progressively reopened throughout the event.

Should you wish to discuss your individual requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This event takes place with a Rolling Closure under Queensland Police Escort.  Roads will not be fully closed.  Motorists must stay behind a group of cyclists racing and not overtake until there is an additional lane to do so. Cars approaching the convoy will be stopped on the side of the road by the Police.

Local traffic is urged to travel only anti-clockwise in the direction of the race to avoid delays and head on situations. If you do come upon a convoy on the road a 2-3 minute wait is all that is likely to be endured.

There is no member organisation required. You will need to purchase additional insurance if you are not an AusCycling member.

National Road Series teams must be approved by AusCycling .

The exact start times for each event will be determined closer to the event as they depend on entry numbers. Wave start times for each distance can be found in the Rider Guides, released one week prior to the event.

All teams wishing to set up tents will be asked to do so in the designated areas. With the event operating in the centre of town it is important for the safety and consideration of competitors, spectators and locals that team tents are only erected in permitted areas. Golf-Clutch Pro Tour to be included in World Rankings

(Reuters) - The Clutch Pro Tour will be included in the world ranking system, Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) said on Thursday.

The Tour was created in 2019 for lower level professionals, especially in the United Kingdom, and now acts as a feeder to the Challenge and DP World Tours. Its tournaments are played over 54 holes with a 36-hole cut.

The announcement followed a 17-month long application process, and the Clutch Pro Tour Tier One tournaments will become an OWGR Eligible Golf Tour from this week.

"This is a significant milestone for golf, and OWGR is deeply encouraged by the achievement and the continued efforts in developing the sport of golf in the United Kingdom," OWGR Chairman Peter Dawson said in a statement.

The opening event in the Clutch Pro Tour season begins on April 30 at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed circuit that launched in 2022 and has divided the sport, had its application to be included in the world ranking system unanimously rejected by the OWGR in October.

LIV sent a letter to its members in March informing them that the organisation had formally withdrawn its application to be included in the rankings system.

Famed ‘Ride The Rockies’ bike event canceled due to low registration

event tour bike

Updated at 3:36 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024

One of Colorado’s marquee cycling events has been canceled for 2024.

Ride The Rockies was scheduled for June and hoped to take more than 2,000 riders on a route in northwestern Colorado, but the long-running tour failed to attract enough interest from participants, the organizers announced on Thursday.

“After much consideration and evaluation of the limited registration, we regret that Ride The Rockies 2024 is canceled. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the towns, participants, sponsors, crew, volunteers, and supporters who have had a role in making this ride so special for the past 37 years,” a statement on the group’s website read.

The organization’s post left it unclear if the event will return. “We are assessing the best options for this beloved ride,” the organizers wrote.

Ride The Rockies is a tour, not a race. This year’s installment was scheduled to run from June 9 to 15, covering 400-plus miles and more than 23,000 feet of vertical gain.

Just days before the cancellation, Ride The Rockies was advertising this year’s merch, camping locations, and sponsors. The tour was to include stops in Steamboat Springs, Craig, Meeker, Rangely, and Fruita.

Ride The Rockies' now former tour director Sabra Nagel lost her job at about the same time the cancellation was announced. She said she is devastated.

"I feel bad for all the communities that have worked so hard to bring this event that I'm devastated for the financial impact some of these communities are going to see because their hotels have been booked full and now people are going to be canceling those reservations," Nagel said. "This doesn't just impact me. This impacts hundreds of other people that have worked very hard with me since October of last year to prepare."

Meeker locals and cycling fans alike were surprised and disappointed

Stephanie Hanson, executive director of the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, saw the news of the cancellation on Facebook — just hours after receiving an email from the event about planning.

“Well, at first I thought it was a joke,” she said.

But then got a call confirming the news.

Hanson made a point to say she wasn’t “angry or disgruntled,” and believes the organizers were as surprised as she was. She is disappointed, however.

While Ride the Rockies riders have zoomed through Meeker in years past, her community of just a few thousand people has never hosted an overnight stop. This year was going to be its chance.

“We're a small town, so saying 1,500 riders are staying overnight, that's huge for us because they come to our restaurants and our shops,” Hanson said. “And further you're introducing someone to a town that maybe they'll return to.”

All the town’s lodgings had already been booked up, months in advance. One saving grace is that this does give local merchants time to adjust, Hanson said, though the chamber is giving people who’d still like to keep their reservations $20 to spend at local establishments.

News of the cancellation drew a flood of social media posts. Some commenters complained the routes had grown too easy, too hard, or too boring. But a sense of shock and sadness was the most common response.

“The feeling of camaraderie while looking ahead and behind at the line of cyclists all laboring up Loveland or Independence Pass, and the feeling of accomplishment rolling into the last stop for the night, the nice hot shower in the shower truck, a hearty meal and then settling down in the tent for a good night’s rest,” one woman wrote of her experience.

In years past, the event was so popular that slots were awarded by lottery. That wasn’t the case this year.

“A classic Colorado gem gone by the wayside,” one commenter wrote.

History of Ride The Rockies

Ride The Rockies was founded by The Denver Post in 1986. The inaugural ride took more than 1,500 riders from Grand Junction to Denver.

In 2021, it was sold by the Denver Post Community Foundation to an organization called Ventures Endurance Events, which is a subsidiary of Gannett USA Today. A new tour director came aboard early in 2023. Ride The Rockies was previously canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Refunds for this year’s ride will be paid automatically, the organizers said, and those who registered will still get a commemorative jersey.

Former director Nagel said the cancellation is a blow to Colorado.

"I think this ride means everything to the state. Over 80 percent of our riders were Colorado riders. It's got a legacy. I think the impacts to Colorado are far wider and far deeper than anybody can actually put their mind around," she said.
