-Start with a shower.

-Enter the sauna room.

-If preferred, use bunches of silver birch (or vihta ) to gently beat your muscles and relax them.

-When the dry heat ( höyry ) becomes too much, have a shower or jump into a cool body of water - during the winter in Finland, some will even roll in the snow or jump through the ice into the lake.

-Indulge in sausages and beer with your fellow sauna-mates.

Alex, the tour director, made everyone feel welcome and important. His knowledge of the Nordic and Baltic states is amazing. And he seems to be fluent in just about every European language. The local Helsinki guide (I’m embarrassed to say I forget her name) was also knowledgeable and very happy to answer questions. The train rides to Lappeenranta and back were very comfortable. In Lappeenranta I was particularly spoiled as I was the only person for this leg of the tour, so I had the guide to myself. Arja was a delight. As a long time resident and business owner of the town, she knew it inside out. We strolled like old friends through the streets and pathways as I soaked up the beautiful scenery, culture and history of the this beautiful land. I would highly recommend this tour for the relaxing and informative time it provides.

Welcome to Helsinki, the capital of Finland – a bilingual country – where all street signs are written in Finnish and Swedish. Your friendly driver will meet you at the airport and transport you to your hotel in the heart of this perfectly clean city, where design is king, nature is an integral part of life and culture and education are taken very seriously. The next day, join an expert local guide on a 3-hour tour along Helsinki’s major landmarks and spend the rest of the day exploring on your own. Your third day in Finland will take you on a private tour of picturesque Porvoo, an old Finnish town where you will be charmed by its many shops, cafes, and attractions.

A 2-hour train ride from Helsinki will deliver you to Turku, clearly a medieval European town. You see it in the riverfront, the market square, the castle, and the cathedral. Turku, a vibrant modern city of many events, proudly holds the title of European Capital of Culture- 2011. The Aura River is the heart of the city. During the summer, the riverbanks come to life when people gather to eat, drink, and listen to music. There are old sailing ships moored in the river, and you can take cruises out into the archipelago or to nearby Naantali. You can go on a guided tour with a local expert who will take you to the town’s main landmarks, and you will also have plenty of time to explore on your own.

Another short train ride, this time from Turku, takes you to the lovely town of Tampere, where the balance between “industrial” and “natural” is well preserved. A large city by Finnish standards, with more than 200,000 inhabitants, Tampere has managed to keep the small town feel. The city center is compact in size, and the atmosphere is friendly and casual. Tampere is located on a scenic spot on a narrow isthmus between two lakes. The Tammerkoski rapids and their riverbanks form the backdrop for old industrial buildings, and ridges formed thousands of years ago by ancient seas and retreating ice offer fantastic views over the two lakes. Original architecture and innovative urban development blend together to please both viewers and users of the built environment.

Nearby, at Fridheimar, you will enjoy a beautiful show with Icelanic horses and some organic, tomato-based delicacies as well. Following your guided tour of the Golden Circle, we will drive to Landeyjahöfn harbor and board a ferry to the Westman Islands. The short 45-minute boat ride will give you a new perspective of Iceland’s south coast. When the ferry docks on the main island, Heimaey, you might even spot a brave sheep grazing on the rocky cliffs surrounding you! Enjoy a delectable dinner at Hotel Vestmannaeyjar, your cozy accommodation for the evening.

Finland has pleasant summers, with July being the warmest month (temperatures usually average around 15°C).

Outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking and fishing are popular during summer and spring.

In Lapland midsummer is also the time of the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun barely sets.

Winter runs from November to March and during this time expect plenty of snowfall - perfect for skiing, snow boarding, snowshoeing and sledding. With temperatures regularly hitting -20°C, Finland's winters are particularly cold, so pack accordingly if travelling at this time.

The north of Finland (known as Lapland) is characterised by relatively flat terrain, demarcated by long rivers and due to its Arctic location, extreme snowfall and ice can be found, particularly in winter.

Bordering   Sweden ,   Norway   and   Russia , Finland also has long stretches of coastline along the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The coastal areas are home to thousands of rocky islands (which are mostly uninhabited) while the interior of the country is dominated by forests and lakes.
