Pleasantly surprised!

I hate shopping around for the best price, but I hate paying more than I have to even more. Flight hub made finding the best price so easy and quickly too! If my actual travel experience goes as well as booking the flight, I not only will be thrilled, but I will be a convert for life!

Worst search function EVER!

I have a health condition that requires I sit in the front of the plane with extra room - so I have to purchase first class, but I want to find the least expensive option. I tried to search for a first class ticket REPEATEDLY! which IS an option they SUPPOSEDLY offer! But EVERY single search result was filled with economy flights. So, it was impossible to find the least expensive first class ticket. Then when I tried to “filter” the results I found there wasn’t an option to filter for first class ONLY to list it at the beginning of the search - which OBVIOUSLY does NO good! The search function in this app is worthless! Save yourself time and choose one of the MANY other travel app options!

Transfer flight needs visa?!

Horrible experience with this company. I always buy tickets with edreams and never had any issue. This time I wanted to try flighthub because of all the good reviews. This app gave me an option to transfer from Canada, which apparently needs a transit visa, without any warning. I found out by luck one day before my flight and had to pay twice as much as my original ticket to change the flight. Checked three other websites and no other website shows you flight options where you need visa for transit. How is the customer supposed to know this??? Unbelievable.

did great on the most part in helping me find flights to Nova Scotia and back to Ottawa, but sadly with 2 different airlines.. however i didnt understand that the check in luggage on one of those flights was so expensive.. and i had already purchased the tickets before i knew, i did not see anywhere the cost of that checked luggage while purchasing or i probably would have went with something cheaper, nearly 100 dollars for checked 10kg baggage is outrageous.

I am so grateful that I finally got a ticket at last with FlightHub. The company kept posting different ticket prices. Keep doing that with your customers.

The end justifies the means?

After multiple attempts and hours on the phone I was able to find an option that worked. A flight which the website said was available was actually sold out. The customer service agent had the same problem. When I selected an option that did not include this airline I was able to book, but the cost was 50% more than the "best" option which, with three tickets, meant it was as expensive as if there were four of the "best". Annoying, but eventually successful, and more expensive than what was being presented. (Same error present for more than 24 hours.)

It was my first experience and booking the flight was easy and convenient, and I am hoping soon the next ticket be the flight to my beloved country to IRAN. Farnaz

Very poor customer service

Very long waits for connecting to the customer care service, Airlines not allowed me do online check-ins when booked a flight with FlightHub

Round trip flights offering different airlines

The round trip flight departing on Delta allows for checked bagged <50# however, the return flight via Frontier required checked baggage be <40#. This was the only carrier option for return given with other times. The difference in baggage regulations creates a problem. The lesson learned is don’t fly with two different carriers in round trip flights & if that’s the only option to look elsewhere for flights.

Easy to book

Easy to book , great prices and when we had a problem it was dealt with quickly and to our satisfaction

FlightHub comes through with a fare half the price that was showing on WestJet

I did a Google Flight search for fares from YYC to YOW on a specific date and found one at $323 on WestJet. My instinct was to book on WestJet's site but alas thr same flight showed as double the price. I went back to Google Flight search and the lower fare was still there and bookable via FlightHub. I thought something was amiss but decided to try to book on FlightHub, expecting some kind of bait and switch. Lo and behold it was genuine and I paid the quoted price of $323 and received my e-ticket with the WestJet flight locator. Still a bit dubious, I went back to WestJet's site and looked up my booking with the flight locator and there it was! I am absolutely floored that I was able to transact this fare through FlightHub. Way to go FlightHub! Thank you!

I made a reservation and received an email later with a link that my reservation was canceled. At that time, my account was not charged. I went ahead and booked directly with the airline and shortly after, Flighthub charged my account. Every attempt to get a refund from Flighthub failed and I was stuck with two reservations - apparently, the first was not canceled. I will not make a reservation with Flighthub again and I definitely will not refer anyone to it.

good deal, smooth process and safe website. And I always purchased tickets via Flighthub. Thank you!

FlightHun is Scam

FlightHun is Scam. I booked a ticked to a specified Airport where I am planning to travel vis FlightHub website. I chose flexible option and payed about 250$ extra to make its changes flexible. Then I used that destination & arrival date (per their email) to my (Wife's & Son's) Visa application as port & date of entry. After 48 hours its changed to different city which is 8-10 hour drive to my destination. I talked to their customer service they told me that you have to pay another 75$ for cancellation and 200$ for new booking per person. Just avoid these scam.

No ticket recognized

Flight hub issued a ticket and took payment but Porter airlines has no record of it. Flight hub automation phone directed me to Porter. Porter auto phone directed me to Flighthub. No help

Excellent Job and Excellent Customer…

Excellent Job and Excellent Customer Service, VERY POLITE and accomodating, thanks and special mentiom to Aaron , who help me for my booking of flight. You are the Best! 👏👏👏👍

Commercial aviation is one of the world’s most fascinating sectors. As a subset of leisure, tourism, and logistics industries, airlines have never been more crucial than today. The great COVID-19 outbreak of 2019-2022 has more or less brought the world to its knees in dramatic fashion.

A global pandemic has translated into economic seizures, especially due to the massive reduction in travel and therefore aviation. Despite aviation being a low-margin business due to the volatility of oil, high CapEx, and several different factors, it is still one of the most important businesses in the world.

When an airline is formed, they’ll usually designate a specific city from which its operational tendrils form a web. Hubs have become pervasive throughout aviation. Simply put, it’s much easier to strive for operational optimization if you only have to worry about 1 core city through which you operate flights.

In this guide, we’ll investigate what an airline hub is, why it’s important, and then break all of the major airlines down into their hub cities. Let’s get started.

Emirates hub and spoke route network

According to strategic aviation consultant Stephen Holloway , “An airline hub may be defined as an airport that receives many passengers or as an airport that serves as an operating base of an airline, whether or not the airline allows for connecting traffic.”

The easiest way to describe a hub for a given airline is to attribute the amount of traffic as a percentage of its total traffic. Alternatively, you can also calculate the percentage of flights operated by a particular airline in a specific airport.

There are 2 main operating strategies for airlines:

  • Airlines like Qantas, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and EL AL are some of the best examples of hub and spoke airlines.
  • Airlines like Southwest, Hainan Airlines, Ryanair, and easyJet are some of the best examples of point-to-point airlines

Hub and Spoke versus Point to Point

Generally, smaller planes are used on point-to-point routes due to the lower demand relative to massive hub-and-spoke routes. For example, a point-to-point Hainan Airlines flight from New York City (JFK) to Chengdu (CTU) is operated using a 787-9, and Air China operates a hub-and-spoke route from New York City (JFK) to Beijing (PEK) using a 747-8, which can hold more passengers.

To visualize, check out Etihad’s route network:

Etihad Route Network

Most of Etihad’s flights go through Abu Dhabi. This is consistent with the hub-and-spoke philosophy, which is capable of funneling travelers across the world via its hub in Abu Dhabi.

On the flip-side, let’s look at Hainan Airlines’ international route network below:

Hainan Airlines route map

As you can tell, Hainan Airlines operates several different flights and covers a lot of area with its point-to-point network. That means customers can fly on lesser-known routes like from New York City (JFK) to Chongqing (CKG) without having to inconveniently stop in Beijing (PEK) or Shanghai (PVG).

Bottom Line: An airline hub is advantageous because air transportation can be consolidated into 1 destination, which allows for a greater scale. If an airline can fill larger aircraft easily, it will realize significant cost savings. However, with technological advances from fuel-efficient aircraft and a greater appetite for convenient nonstop flights in the point-to-point model, the hub-and-spoke model is quickly losing favor.

We discussed what hub airports are in the above section, so let’s briefly touch on focus cities. According to the Encyclopedia of Transportation: Social Science and Policy , focus cities are defined as a “ destination from which an airline operates limited point-to-point routes .”

By extension, a focus city appeals to the “local” instead of connecting markets much more than a hub city.

Airline hubs are crucial for numerous things. Since Upgraded Points has always been focused on points and premium cabin travel, we’ll be talking about airline hubs as they relate to these topics.

Knowing which hubs exist for a particular airline will be extremely important in crafting an award itinerary. After all, how can you plan a Cathay Pacific first class award flight without first knowing that Cathay Pacific’s hub is Hong Kong (HKG)?

The other, less obvious reasons why you should care about airline hubs may be as follows:

  • Hub-and-spoke routes can sometimes have the most award availability. Sometimes, it’s the other way around, where the airline’s ultra-premium routes have sufficient revenue demand, thereby drying up award availability.
  • Figuring out where airline hubs are can help you plan a journey with as little time wasted possible actually going through airports and in the air.
  • Airline hubs offer the most operational flexibility. Because most of their flights go through hubs, you can then plan a connecting flight with a convenient schedule.
  • One of the best examples of this would be comparing an itinerary on Delta nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Paris (CDG). Award availability will be rare/expensive, but if you choose to go from Los Angeles (LAX) to Salt Lake City (SLC) and then to Paris (CDG), you’ll find huge award availability.
  • One other example would be comparing an itinerary on American Airlines nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Hong Kong (HKG). Award availability will be nearly impossible to find, but if you start your search in Phoenix (PHX) or San Diego (SAN) and go through Los Angeles (LAX) and then finally to Hong Kong (HKG), you’ll see a ton of award availability that isn’t bookable with the nonstop option. This is known as married segment availability .

The Airline Hubs for the Top 115+ Major Airlines

Now that we’ve demonstrated why you should care about figuring out key airline hubs globally as well as their associated airlines, let’s get into our list of the top airlines in the world and discuss where they hold hub operations.

All of these images and maps were provided via searches on Great Circle Mapper , so keep that in mind. Additionally, all airline hubs are shown as red dots, while all airline focus cities are shown as blue dots .

The organization of these airlines hereafter is in alphabetical order.

Aegean Airlines hubs and focus cities

Aegean Airlines is the flag carrier of Greece. This Star Alliance airline maintains an operational strategy and focus of mostly regional flights. Frequently Asked Questions

Which airports are hubs.

Many airports are hubs. It just depends on which airlines you’re talking about. For example, American Airlines has these airport hubs in the U.S.:

Also, American Airlines’ focus cities are believed to be:

  • Reagan-National (DCA

On the other hand, Delta Air Lines has these airport hubs:

Therefore, you’ll need to figure out which airline you want to learn about in order to find its hubs because each airline designates different cities as its hubs.

What is a hub for an airline?

In other words, if an airline has lots of traffic, flights, and general operations at a particular airport, that airport is considered a hub.

What is a hub and spoke topology?

Hub and spoke topology is a type of route network that describes connecting numerous minor destinations to a central, hub location. Then, long-haul flights universally depart from the hub airport. This is in contrast to a point-to-point model, which operates smaller, low-capacity airplanes on nonstop routes, even if they’re not between 2 major cities.

What are the benefits of the hub and spoke system?

Operationally, it is much easier to achieve economies of scale and lower OpEx when you employ a hub and spoke system. For example, Emirates can maintain all of its flight attendant bases and primarily only consider operations through 1 airport: Dubai (DXB).

Usually, hub and spoke models save airlines money. In many cases (except for hub captives), booking airplane tickets from hub-and-spoke model airlines results in cheaper fares. However, in some cases, booking flights as a hub captive (e.g. American Airlines in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW))) can result in diminished competition and higher fares.

Business Wire

MONTREAL--( BUSINESS WIRE )--A recent survey conducted by FlightHub™ reveals the search for the perfect shot for social plays an increasingly important role in choosing a vacation destination amongst Canadians. According to a survey of 2,000 individuals, two-thirds (66%) of all Canadians admit that they look at social media to find inspiration for activities for their trip.

Additionally, forty-five per cent of Gen Z also admitted to choosing to visit some locations solely for the purpose of posting on social media, which also holds true for 28 per cent of men compared 23 per cent of women, across generations.

“These numbers indicate that Canadians are redefining their travel priorities when choosing their next holiday destination,” says Henri Chelhot, CEO of FlightHub. “While we often associate travel with discovering new cultures, food tasting, sightseeing, or creating memorable moments, social media is in fact now fully embedded into what makes the travel experience and constitutes an element that will impact the future of the industry along with consumption habits.”

The following are additional highlights from the FlightHub survey.

Social Media is Now Part of the Travel Experience

According to the survey, Millennials and Gen Zers emphasize pictures and social media when travelling the most. The survey reveals that 38 per cent of Millennials and 35 per cent Gen Zers choose their entire travel destinations based on the pictures they will be able to post on social media, while around forty per cent of both age groups admitted choosing activities while on a trip for the purpose of posting a good picture on their platforms.

  • Baby Boomers think of social media pictures the least, with only 11 per cent indicating that they think of the photos they will be able to post during their holiday.
  • Whereas 31 per cent of Gen X reported that when they choose a travel destination, they think of their social media pictures.

Interestingly, 38 per cent of Millennials and Gen Zers choose their travel destinations to make their friends and acquaintances envious of them. Unsurprisingly, these percentages are lower amongst Baby Boomers (9%) and Generation X (24%).

Travel Inspiration: The Influencer Generation

When it comes to the inspiration behind travel destinations, overall, friends and family are the number one source amongst Canadians (67%), with travel blogs ranked second (42%). On a generational level, 70 per cent of Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Z rely on friends and family for inspiration for specific destinations whereas only 60 per cent of Millennials do. However, social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are also popular choices for travel inspiration amongst the younger generations.

Unique vs. Touristy Travel Experiences

Despite the rise of social media travels, spontaneity is still appreciated when travelling. In fact, 90 per cent of Canadians indicated that they love moments of unexpected fun when they travel and 72 per cent seek out novel experiences. However, tourist attractions also hold appeal, with 90 per cent of respondents indicating they like to visit at least one during a trip.

These are the 10 best — and worst — US airlines of 2024, according to WalletHub

flight hub travel

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of this article mischaracterized the flight cancellation rates for American and Southwest airlines.

Choosing flights can be a challenge, especially when balancing affordable fares with the need for in-flight comfort, safety and peace of mind.

Personal finance company WalletHub recently issued a ranking that can serve as a guide for consumers. Its 2024 list of the best U.S. airlines compares nine large airlines and one regional carrier across 13 factors affecting affordability, reliability, comfort and safety.

Four airlines earned a score of 60 or higher: Alaska Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Alaska was named the best overall airline, as well as the second safest.

Here are highlights of WalletHub's best airlines of 2024 ranking.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Alaska Airlines is WalletHub's top airline of 2024

WalletHub awarded the highest overall score to Alaska Airlines, which earned a score of 68.07 out of a possible 100.

Its data showed Alaska had the second-best safety score, third-best comfort and reliability, and fourth-best affordability.

WalletHub's data predated the Jan. 5, 2024, incident where a door plug blew out on one of Alaska's Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets. Alaska's position at the top of the list despite that mishap speaks to Alaska's resilience and high quality, WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said.

"Even though incidents like the door plug blowout can raise concerns, Alaska Airlines has demonstrated resilience and continues to prioritize safety and quality service, reinforcing its reputation as a top-performing carrier," Happe said.

Spirit is the most affordable airline; Delta, JetBlue are most comfortable

Spirit earned the best marks for affordability and safety.

Delta and JetBlue Airways were considered the best for comfort, with Delta also leading for reliability because of its low rates of cancellations, delays, mishandled luggage and denied boardings.

American and Southwest rank low on WalletHub's best airlines list

American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, which collectively operate about 70% of the flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, were among the airlines with the lowest scores in WalletHub's analysis.

American ranked No. 8 with a score of 46.52. Southwest was last on the list, No. 10 with a score of 36.03, one spot below ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines.

Reliability issues such as canceled and delayed flights, mishandled baggage and denied boardings explain their low ranks, Happe said.

American, Southwest had the lowest percentage of canceled flights

WalletHub found American and Southwest had the lowest percentage of canceled flights relative to the number of regularly scheduled flights, citing 2023 flight data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. American's cancellation rate was 0.11%, while Southwest followed with 0.23%.

"Overall, both airlines performed well in minimizing flight cancellations, but ranked relatively lower in other categories leading to its overall ranking," WalletHub spokeswoman Diana Polk said.

During this period, Southwest suffered widespread disruptions during the 2022 Christmas and New Year's holidays, when glitches with its crew scheduling software combined with winter storms affecting their Chicago and Denver hubs resulted in 16,700 flight cancellations.

Southwest and other airlines have since improved their infrastructure and how they respond to weather disruptions to reduce delays and cancellations. Their work bore positive results, as there were no major issues during Thanksgiving and Christmas 2023.

WalletHub's best airlines of 2024

  • Alaska Airlines (68.07 out of 100)
  • SkyWest Airlines (65.96)
  • Spirit Airlines (65.69)
  • Delta Air Lines (61.56)
  • United Airlines (51.96)
  • JetBlue Airways (51.6)
  • Hawaiian Airlines (48.3)
  • American Airlines (46.52)
  • Frontier Airlines (43.57)
  • Southwest Airlines (36.03)

These Are the Best Frequent Flier Programs of 2024

Only the best will do.

flight hub travel

d3sign/Getty Images

Summer vacation is just around the corner, which means many of you will be taking to the skies to get to your dream destinations. But, before you do, make sure to sign up for a frequent flier program to ensure you maximize those travel benefits. But, which one should you be signing up for exactly? WalletHub has the answer.

The personal finance website released its report on the 2024 Best Frequent Flier Programs . The report ranks the 10 largest domestic airlines based on 21 key metrics, including everything from the "value of a point/mile" to "blackout dates for reward flights." The team also created three distinct consumer profiles, a "Light Flier," who spends roughly $355 on annual airline travel, an "Average Flier," who spends roughly $3,736 on annual airline travel, and a "Frequent Flier," who spends $7,117 on annual airline travel, so see how each program pans out for every traveler.

After looking at all the data, WalletHub named Alaska Airline's program the best in the business.

"Alaska Mileage Plan is the best frequent flier program of 2024, beating last year’s winner United MileagePlus," WalletHub wrote in its findings. The airline won thanks to its policy to never allow miles to expire, its high number of destinations and partner airlines, and the value earned by every category of traveler (light, average, and frequent).

It was joined in the top five programs by United Airlines and its MileagePlus program in second, followed by Delta Air Lines' SkyMiles, Hawaiian Airlines' HawaiianMiles, and American Airlines' AAdvantage.

The good news is, no matter which program you choose you'll likely be winning. According to WalletHub, seven of the 10 largest airlines are "offering more rewards value in 2024 than in 2023. On average, the top 10 airlines are offering 18 percent more value than they did last year."

"For any good and sustainable airline rewards program, it has to be a win-win situation. Consumers get perks such as priority boarding and free check-in luggage; gradually, they become more loyal to that specific airline, make more purchases, and spread more positive Word of Mouth over time," Wan Yang, an associate professor and associate editor of International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, The Collins College of Hospitality Management, shared in the findings about what makes one program better than another. "Meanwhile, they will accumulate more miles with that company, which makes 'switching brands' more costly. Eventually, the airline company will gain great long-term benefits from those loyal consumers, also known as more 'Lifetime Value' from consumers."

Beyond the study, WalletHub also shared a custom calculator that allows travelers to personalize the results of the best frequent flier programs based on their own budget. This way, you can always pick the one that's right for you.

Delta is reinforcing its No. 1 position as the largest U.S. carrier to Africa this winter by relaunching daily* service to Lagos, Nigeria (LOS), from  New York-JFK on Dec. 1. Fleet enhancements in service to Accra, Ghana (ACC), and South Africa are also underway.

The airline carries more than half a million customers between the U.S. and Africa each year on more than 34 weekly flights.

“These enhancements reflect our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re expanding our options for customers to experience the premium service and elevated hospitality they expect from Delta.”    Delta currently operates daily service between Atlanta and Lagos and, with the resumption of daily New York-JFK service, will offer a total of 14 weekly flights to Nigeria in December through the first half of January and 10 weekly flights for the remainder of winter 2024.

Customers on this flight will have a choice of Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin experiences on the  Airbus A330-200 . Once on board, customers in Delta One can look forward to an extensive food and beverage program that includes thoughtfully curated menu options, as well as specialty snacks and premium beer, wine and spirits. Customers flying in Delta Premium Select will have more space to relax and stretch out, with a wider seat, deeper recline, an adjustable footrest and leg rest.

All customers can enjoy a wide selection of in-flight entertainment options – movies, TV series, music, podcasts and more – via Delta Studio. Delta also partners with diverse suppliers worldwide for in-flight products such as artisan-crafted amenity kits and beverages like Thrive Farmers Tea.

Premium upgrades in service to Ghana and South Africa

As the first U.S. airline to initiate service to Ghana, Delta remains the largest operator in the U.S.-Ghana market, offering year-round daily service from New York-JFK.

Furthermore, in late October 2024, Delta will upgrade its aircraft serving Ghana to the 281-seat Airbus A330-900neo , adding nearly 1,000 more seats each week, providing 30% more capacity between Ghana and the U.S. The aircraft features four differentiated cabin experiences: Delta One Suites, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.

Delta One Suites feature a sliding door for enhanced privacy, memory-foam mattress and soft bedding made from recycled materials. Delta One customers can also enjoy more beverage options and a seasonal chef-curated four-course meal.      Delta is also upgrading its aircraft from Atlanta to South Africa, where it operates 10 weekly flights year-round to Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). With the introduction of the higher-premium 35H  Airbus A350-900 , this upgrade will provide an additional eight Delta One Suite seats, bringing the total to 40, along with improved operational performance. Customers can look forward to these changes for JNB effective Jun. 20 and CPT on Sept. 9.   For more information and to book travel, visit delta.com .

*This route will initially fly daily, shifting to three times per week on Jan. 16, 2025.
