Who is Jatayu?

jatayu-vadham-painting-Raja-Ravi-Varma

Jatayu, in the Hindu epic Ramayana, is the younger brother of Aruna and a demi-god. He has the form of a vulture and is the dearest friend of Lord Rama’s father, Dhasharatha. According to Ramayana, Jatayu had tried to save Goddess Sita when he saw Ravana abducting her to Lanka. The personification of chivalry and valor, Jatayu risked his life to rescue Sita from the evil clutches of King Ravana.

After Ravana clipped his wing, Jatayu lay down waiting for Lord Rama so he could tell him that Ravana had gone south. With the pain of Jatayu dying to save Sita, Lord Rama blessed the bird and performed his last rites. From that day on, Jatayu has been the epitome of bravery and stands as a symbol for the empowerment and protection of women.

The sculpture of this mythical bird at Jatayu Earth Centre sits at the exact spot where Jatayu took his last breath.

Jatayu Earth Centre – The Four Hills

Jatayu Earth’s Center is spread across four hills in Chadayamangalam, Kollam district of Kerala. For the creator, Rajiv Anchal, ‘Jatayu’ is a symbolic representation of an era when humans and other living beings cared for each other and lived together peacefully.

The main attractions of Jatayu Park are spread over four hills, each offering different activities and attractions. Each hill has its own significance. These hills are integrated with the environment and uplift natural harmony, sustainability, and preservation through two check dams for rainwater conservation and uninterrupted water supply. Electricity is domestically harnessed from solar power panels for the smooth functioning of the Jatayu Earth Center.

1. Jatayu Rock Hill – The hill representing women’s safety and honor

The biggest highlight of Jatayu Earth Center is the sculpture of Jatayu, the bird designed by the prominent director, artist, and sculptor Rajiv Anchal. What does Jatayu Earth Center signify?

According to the sculptor, Rajiv Anchal, the Jatayu rock symbolizes women’s empowerment. In the present day, women face numerous troubles and the crimes against them are rising. This epic structure which highlights the bravery of Jatayu to save Goddess Sita, cries out to people about the importance that should be given to women and their safety. Following Jatayu’s example, men must stand for the justice of women. Uplifting women and ensuring they live in a safe and secure environment is vital. Jatayu Earth Center is a tribute to Womanhood.

The virtual reality museum inside the sculpture at Jatayu Earth Centre is designed to promote the idea of harmony.

Jatayu Rock, Pond and Rama Temple

Jatāyu, according to the Rāmāyana, was a bird who was the son of Garuda (Vishnu’s mythical bird), and king of the vultures. He is also attributed to being the son of Aruna. He was an ally of Rāma and fought Rāvana furiously to prevent him from abducting Sītā, but was overpowered and left mortally wounded.

In the great epic Ramayana, Jatayu is characterized as a noble bird of divine origin. One day he happened to hear the plaintive cry of a lady. It was Sita crying for help while she was being abducted to Lanka by the demon king Ravana. Jatayu rushed to rescue her, stopped Ravana’s chariot named Pushpaka Vimana, and engaged in a battle with him. Eventually, Ravana cut off the Jatayu’s left wing with his powerful sword Chandrahasa, and went away with Sita. It is said that the injured Jatayu and his lost wing landed on top of a rock.

In time, the rock got the name Jatayupara. This is where the monumental statue of Jatayu is now built in Kollam, Kerala. The pond near the rock is said to have formed by the stroke of Jatayu’s beak. It has water throughout the year and never goes dry.

Legend also says that Lord Rama came to Jatayupara and gave moksha or deliverance to the wounded and dying Jatayu. Jatayu narrated the entire story to Rama, delivering him vital information about his wife Sita. Here, there is a mark of footprint said to be that of Lord Rama. A temple dedicated to Lord Rama sits in an adjacent compound.

The sculpture, adventure center, and the Siddha Healing Center sit over 65 acres of land and form the Jatayu Earth Centre.

The Jatayu Earth Center offers an assortment of rock-based adventure activities for thrill-seekers. Plan your trip to Kerala with us and enjoy your visit to Jatayu Park.

JATAYU STATUE, KERALA – THE COMPLETE TRAVEL GUIDE

Jatayu statue in Kerala

Kerala’s newest tourist attraction is an enormous sculpture of Jatayu, a vulture, from the pages of Ramayana. Do mythologies fascinate you? or Hunting for a weekend destination? or Looking for new hiking trails? In search of views of rolling, lush green hills? Then Jatayu statue should be on your list. The Jatayu Earth’s centre, 38 km from Kollam, opened its gates to the public on 17 August 2018 and is steadily making its mark on Kerala’s tourism map.

Last year, I came across a photo of the Jatayu sculpture and, since then I, have been planning to take a trip down south. So this year, in August I, took a road trip across Tamil Nadu and Kerala and, the Jatayu sculpture was one of the highlights of my holiday.

HOW TO ARRIVE AT JATAYU EARTH’S CENTER?

Jatayu Earth’s Centre is located in Chadayamangalam. It is the world’s largest functioning bird sculpture. It is accessible by road, air and rail. AIR : Trivandrum International airport, 45 km away, is the nearest airport. RAIL : The nearest railway station is the Kollam Junction is 35 km away and the Thiruvananthapuram Central is 55 km away. ROAD : Regular buses to and from Kollam to Chadayamangalam. It is along the Trivandrum- Kochi highway and connected to Trivandrum, Varkala and other major towns and cities.

WHERE TO STAY?

After a day of adventures if you are not ready to say goodbye then book yourself a night under the stars in one of the tents. The Jatayu Earth’s Center offers glamping services complete with a campfire, dinner under the stars.

Siddha Healing Caves are the Center’s another marvel. These naturally formed caves are converted into cottages for individuals taking part in the Siddha Rejuvenation Therapy — a week-long therapy that follows Ayurveda.

However, if camping or week-long ayurvedic therapy is not your cup of tea, you still have plenty of accommodation options to opt for. The Jatayu statue is linked to major towns and cities by roads and is easily accessible.

  • Kollam is a city along the Malabar coast and is popular for its beaches and is a known trade hub. It is 38.4 km from the Jatayu Earth’s Center. Here one can find ayurvedic resorts and a variety of accommodations.
  • Trivandrum, Kerala’s capital, is a large city and offers a range of accommodations from 5-star resorts to budget hotels and is only 45 km from the Jatayu Earth’s Center.
  • Varkala is a small seaside town on the coast of the Arabian sea. It is located 35 km from the Jatayu Center. This seaside town is quiet and still unknown to most tourists. It is the ideal location for weekend stays at the beach. The town offers a range of accommodations as well as ayurvedic resorts.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE JATAYU STATUE

Anyone familiar with Ramayan is aware of Jatayu’s role in the epic. Jatayu, a demi-god shaped like a vulture, witnessed Ravan abducting Sita and tried to save her. The two fought and, Ravan severed Jatayu’s wing and, he fell to the ground. Jatayu suffered injuries during the fight that ultimately led to his death.

Legend states Jatayu fell on the rocks in Chadayamangalam and, the sculpture is where he fell. Whether this is true or not, I’m not sure, but I like to believe it. It adds to the sculpture’s magnificence. Rajiv Anchal, an accomplished sculptor, built the Jatayu sculpture to promote and create awareness regarding women’s safety, protecting their honour.

JATAYU STATUE TICKETS, TIMINGS AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

The Jatayu sculpture is inside the Jatayu Earth’s centre, a Nature park and tourism centre. The Jatayu Nature Park / Jatayu earth Centre is 38 km from Kollam.

TIMINGS : 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. Until recently, the park was closed to visitors due to the pandemic. Upon my arrival in Kollam, I learnt, the park was closed due to the pandemic. But our hotel manager inquired about the timings and informed us the centre would open on 15 August for a few days. So, I extended my stay to wait till the centre opened. However, due to the pandemic, the visitation days are subject to change. I advise you to call ahead and confirm the timings.

TICKETS: Jatayu Earth centre spans over four hills. Each hill offers different activities and attractions and requires tickets.

These are the various tickets available : • A single ticket for the 1 km walkway to the sculpture costs Rs.250 . The walkway has 800+ steps. • A single ticket to the sculpture and cable car costs Rs. 450 . It is a 10-minute ride. • A single ticket to the adventure centre begins from Rs. 500 onwards. The adventure centre offers various adventures such as zip-lining, rappelling, vertical ladder, paintball for different costs. • A single ticket for the h elicopter ride costs Rs. 2,400 . I highly recommend this ride to appreciate the sculpture’s aerial view and capture some brilliant snapshots for the Gram. During my visit, only the cable car ride was open. Other hills were inoperative. I suggest you call ahead to know which sections are accessible.

Last section of the 1 km walkway to the Jatayu statue in Kerala.

DOCUMENTS: As per Covid guidelines, authorities check the temperatures of all individuals. A double vaccination certificate and or RT-PCR test results are required. Also, carry valid IDs .

THE JATATYU STATUE

On the way to the Jatayu Earth’s Centre, glimpses of the curled claws are visible through the gaps in the trees. But the side view of the sculpture comes is visible when you reach a certain height. I rode the cable car to the top as the walkway was closed due to the pandemic. Halfway up, the sculpture started making an appearance. First, the claws, then the pain-stricken face and finally, the tail is visible. After exiting the cable car, climb a few steps and, there lies the gigantic Jatayu sculpture.

It is a sculpture of a giant wounded vulture with a severed wing. Jatayu’s pain and suffering are masterfully etched. The detailing of the feathers, the claws curled in pain is commendable. These details make the sculpture seem real and is a sculptural masterpiece.

garuda tourist places in kerala

Under the sculpture are a five-level museum and a mini theatre. Due to the pandemic all activities were suspended. Only the cable car, the Ram temple and the Jatatyu statue were operational.

While the sculpture is the attention-seeking feature, the view all around is not to be missed. The surrounding ranges of lush green rolling hills create an instagrammable view. If you reach early, you will most likely have the entire place to yourself.

THE RAM TEMPLE

Another attraction is the Ram temple next to the statue’s right-wing. The temple is still under construction but, visitors can pray here. According to the Ramayan, Lord Ram found Jatayu wounded on this rock. Lord Ram performed Jatayu’s funeral rites and, he attained moksha. Near the statue is a pond that never goes dry. According to legend Jatatyu’s beak created the pond. Also, there is a footprint, which according to legend, belongs to Lord Ram.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AND FACILITIES

Apart from the statue, there are several activities to keep you busy. If you like adventurous activities, there are numerous activities, namely rappelling, zip-lining, nature walks and many more, to keep you occupied. Also, there are provisions for overnight camping and more. Jatayu Park is the ideal place to spend fun times with colleagues, friends or family. Book activities through the Jatayu Earth centre website. There are a few restaurants and small beverage stalls around the statue. I recommend grabbing a glass of chilled lemonade and enjoy the different hues of green hills.

USEFUL TIPS

Below are some tips to bear in mind when visiting the Jatayu statue for a memorable experience.

  • Whether you decide to take the cable car or the 1 km walkway to the statue, wear comfortable shoes. The ground on the climb up is uneven.
  • Carry caps as there is little shade near the statue and, in the afternoons with th e sun overhead, it gets a bit hot.
  • Large bags are not allowed . They provide lockers at the base for storing items.
  • Outside drinks and food not permitted . There are small restaurants and beverage stalls at the top.
  • Book tickets online before your arrival to avoid crowds and long queues.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO ADD THE JATAYU STATUE TO YOUR BUCKET LIST?

My main reason was, it’s something new, so naturally, it’s on my list. There are several reasons why the Jatayu statue should be next on your list. First, it is a marvellous bird statue. Second, it offers expansive views of rolling hills steeped in various shades of blue and green. Third, there are a variety of adventure activities to get your adrenaline pumping. Fourth, it is the ideal location for weekend getaways with family or friends. Fifth, perfect for nature lovers and trekkers.

Whether you want to spend the entire day or just a few hours, the Jatayu statue should be on your list when visiting God’s own country.

Things to Know about Jatayu Nature Park, Kerala

Kerala is the heaven of earth. No doubt, it has gifted beauty. All credits should be given the Tourism department of Kerala. One of the major attractions in Kerala is Jatayu Nature Park or Jatayu Earth's Center. It has been built together by the Tourism department of Kerala and Mr. Rajiv Anchal. It has been the result of a unique idea. The sole aim was to take people to the God’s own Country.

The renowned film director, art director, and sculptor Mr. Rajiv Anchal is the trailblazer behind this staggering idea. It took almost ten years for him to meticulously design and complete this monumental project. Obviously, he alone could not do anything so he took the aid of the team. They, together, did an amazing work. Jatayu Earth’s Center has been constructed government-owned land. It is the worth mentioning that is spread over 65 acres.

Jatayu Nature Park, Kerala

Where is it Situated?

Jatayu Earth’s Center tourism project is located at Jatayupara near Chadayamangalam town in Kollam district of Kerala . The nearest international airport, Trivandrum , is only 50 km away from Jatayu Earth’s Center.

As the name itself suggests, it has the statue of Jatayu. It is built on a mighty rock named Jatayupara. It is 200 feet long, 150 feet wide and 70 feet . This is what makes it the largest functional bird sculpture in the world. It has also got the place in the Guinness Book of World Records .

Sustainable Tourism

Jatayu Earth’s Center is a tourist attraction that develops sustainable ecosystem. With its beautiful hills , fauna and flora spread over an area of 65 acres this place is totally controlled and maintained. It is also a complete tourist attraction destination that keeps everyone excited.

The uninterrupted availability of water source was the major challenge. Due to this a check dam was constructed between two rock valleys. It was possible to store twenty lakhs liters of water. Rest of the problem was solved by collecting and storing rainwater. It helped in two ways. Firstly the water was conserved and the plants also grew well. The major problem was electricity issue. This was solved via solar power. Organic farming was promoted to a major extent. For this purpose, a planned agricultural society was formed. Special stalls will be set up at the Earths Center for visitors to buy the fresh product. The source of those fresh products will be farm itself. Thus Jatayu Earth’s Center is something that was well planned and executed to preserve the environment without disturbing its ecosystem.

Jatayu is respected all over the country. He has a powerful contribution in the great epic Ramayana . He is known as a noble bird of divine origin. The Jatayu Nature Park is now opened for commoners as well. It is located in Chadayamangalam in Kollam, Kerala. It took 2 years to work on the project. It is one of those places who earned popularity. It gained fame for two reasons. The first reason being its location as the park lies in the site where Jatayu, the mythical demigod in the form of an eagle, was put down by the demon king Ravana. And the second reason is that the whole bird structure constructed is the largest in the world. This whole project came into execution because of the partnership between the public and private group.

It has an Ayurvedic resort, a digital museum and a 6D Theater. It is not confined here. It has more than 20 activities to accord adventure and thrill . You will experience fun over there from shooting to paintball and rock climbing and rappelling. The rock formations make it up for it. The statue of Jatayu is 70 feet tall and 200 feet in length, spreading 150 feet wide.

Jatayu Adventure Rock Climbing

It is developed by regional filmmaker Rajiv Anchal. As far as the construction is concerned, it is astonishing. There is the mythical eagle on its back, wings outstretched to depict its fall after heroically fighting against Ravana . Basically, it is telling one of the incidents of Ramayana. Jatayu died in that incident amid saving Sita . The local people are mesmerized to go through it. It will support the community with rainwater harvesting and renewable energy generation projects. It is obvious that it will generate good tourism revenue. The park lies in Chadayamangalam Jatayupura. It itself is a good picnic spot.

As mentioned earlier, it is the result of the public-private partnership. The contract has been signed by Kerala Government and Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited. It is known to be one of the major tourism initiatives. It has followed BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.

Many people interrogate about the major attractions of the place. In the answer to their question, the following places are given:

  • The park sprawls over 65 acres of land. The giant sculpture of Jatayu is worth visiting. The sculpture is 200 feet long, 150 feet broad, 70 feet in height and has a floor area of 15,000 square feet.
  • The sculpture sits at the spot where Jatayu took his last breath. It expresses an incident of Ramayana where this bird died. He even fought with the powerful Ravana in order to save Sita.
  • The astounding things are Beak mark of Jatayu and Footprint of Rama. This is what makes it pure and soothing as well. One can also enjoy the bird’s eye view experience from 1,000 feet above the sea level. It is possible to see the bird’s eye from inside the sculpture.
  • It has links with a filmy world as well. He is none other than Rajiv Anchal who is filmmaker and sculptor. It is worth mentioning that he is the Chairman and Managing Director of Guruchandrika Builders and Property Private Limited.
  • The park is not only spiritual but also adventurous. It has an adventure zone and about 20 games. It is a powerful pack of dedication, devotion, and thrill. It has games like paintball, laser tag, archery, rifle shooting, rock climbing, and bouldering etc. It also has ayurvedic cave resorts.
  • Another major attraction is the facility of the cable car. It is South India’s first state-of-the-art cable car. This is something new to experience.

On being asked about the experience, he was filled with pride. This is what he said: "It took us seven years to build the sculpture. It is basically a concrete structure that has been given a stone finish. Building it has been a major struggle as the terrain was hard and we had to carry all the materials to the top."

This is the first ever build-operate-transfer model via private-public partnership. It is worth mentioning that it is a growth in the tourism industry in Kerala. Rajiv Anchal and his team deserve to of praise for their job. They worked on this project for a decade.

The Jatayu Earth’s Center was expected would have been launched in early 2017. But it could not happen due to some issues. This is the reason it has been inaugurated now. As far the cost is concerned it is just INR 2,500 per head. This is really an interesting place which one must visit .

Garudan Kavu – the lone temple dedicated to Garuda

 alt=

Tirur in Malappuram is wrapped in folklore, legends and mythology. Adding credence to its hoary heritage is the 1,800-year-old Garudan Kavu, the only temple in India dedicated to Garuda - the mythical bird found in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies, in Vellamassery.

It is believed that if one has the blessing of Garuda, the sworn enemy of the nagas or serpents, s/he will forever be saved from sarpa doshas (wrath of serpent gods). Nor will the fear of snakes ever stalk them.

How to reach: Garudan Kavu is on the road from Tirur to Chamravattom. As you cross the gopura (the gate tower) and enter the temple, there is a shrine of lord Mahavishnu in Koormavatara (manifestation as tortoise). Nearby is the shrine for Garuda, his conveyance.

Garudan Kavu

To get a feel of the rich lore behind Garudan Kavu, one needs to taste a bit of mythology. The story of Garuda is one of the most profound and interesting narratives of the Mahabharata. If Garuda is deified, it’s because he deserves it for his courage, verve, daring and his deep devotion to his mother for whom he would have fought a thousand battles. He was the son who sought to free his mother from the bondage of slavery by going in search of amrith, the nectar of immortality.

Garuda’s birth itself was phenomenal. Among the many wives of the revered sage Kashyapa were two sisters Kadru and Vinata. Both the sisters longed for sons who would be valiant and manly. Kashyapa was so pleased with his wives that he granted them a boon each. While Kadru asked that thousand nagas for sons, Vinata asked for just two sons. But she wanted her sons to be braver and smarter than her sister’s thousand. Time went by and Kadru laid a thousand eggs which hatched into nagas.

But Vinata’s eggs showed no signs of hatching. Tired of waiting for so long a time, she tried to break open one of the eggs. To her sorrow, out came a son, Aruna, half developed. Enraged by his mother’s impatience, Aruna cursed her to be her sister Kadru’s slave for life.

Realizing her mistake and deeply sorry for her haste Vinata begged her son to forgive her and save her from his curse. Aruna told his mother that another son, who would be born to her after a gap of 500 years, would free her from the shackles of bondage. It so happened that Aruna uttered his curse when the ocean was being churned by the devas and asuras for generating nectar (amrith).

Garudan Kavu

Kadru, the wily of the two sisters, decided to trap Vinata into bondage with a bet. Both the sisters chanced upon the divine horse Uchchaihshravas gliding across the horizon at dawn. Kadru asked for the color of the horse’s tail. The simple Vinata promptly said it was white. Kadru vehemently contradicted her and said it was black. An argument ensued and Kadru came up with the suggestion that they make a bet and whoever lost the wager would be the other’s slave forever.

The cunning Kadru who had no intention of losing the bet resorted to a mean trick. She asked her naga sons to coil around the horse’s tail and make it look black. And sure enough, Vinata lost her bet and was declared slave to her own sister Kadru.

Vinata thus lived a slave’s life nursing the hope that her second son would liberate her. Soon enough, Garuda was born. He was a huge bird, a powerful and courageous. He soon learnt all about the circumstances which led his mother to her present plight. So he went to the nagas in the hope of finding a way to free his mother.

“Get us amrith from Devaloka and then we’ll free her,” the nagas told Garuda. Garuda then sought the blessings of Kashyapa and Vinata and flew out to get the elixir.

Garuda succeeded in vanquishing the gods and getting the elixir from them. Pleased by the young son’s deep love for his mother and his courage, Mahavishu decided to grant him a boon. Garuda asked the lord that he be made his mount (vahana) and be granted immortality even without partaking of amrith. In the meantime, Devendra attacked Garuda in a bid to retrieve the pot bearing amrith and when he failed in his bid, he pleaded with Garuda to return the divine drink. Garuda told Devendra that if he would be granted the power to eat the serpents he would return the pot, a boon which the god of gods agreed to grant.

Garuda then devised a plan to fulfill his promise to the nagas and also return the pot to Devendra as per the deal. After all, this effort and the dangers he was putting himself through were for his mother. Garuda told Devendra that he has to keep his promise to free his mother and while the serpents would be away to purify themselves for having the elixir, Devendra should retrieve the pot.

As devised, Garuda left the pot on a patch of grass and while the serpents were away for their ablutions, Devendra took back the celestial drink to the abode of the gods.

Garuda thus became a symbol of devotion a son could bear his mother.

Garuda is also Mahavishnu’s insignia as well, fluttering on his flag. In Vishnu temples, the image of Garuda holding a serpent in his talons can be seen before the sanctum sanctorum and on the sacred banner as well.

Special day to visit

Garudan Kavu

Sundays are important to Garudan Kavu, especially during the Mandala period (November 16 to December 28). Devotees throng the place to offer special prayers which will ward off the evil effects of poison. Other ailments for which remedies sought here are skin diseases, mouth ulcers, scabies, breathing problems, pediatric illnesses and skin discolorations.

Garuda is also worshiped as the god who brings ecological balance. Special prayers and offerings are made to this king of birds to ward off the harm caused by birds. Farmers pray that their crops be protected from pests and bird attacks.

An unusual offering

Snake offerings are famous here. Devotees troubled by naga dosha come with live snakes in earthen pots with the mouth of the pots sealed. When the temple is opened, these pots are thrown in from the gopura. The chief priest then sprinkles the Garuda Panchakshari manthra theertha on the aggressive snakes. The popular belief is that these snakes slither southward and become Garuda’s meal.

Though Garudan Kavu receives hundreds of snakes as offering, not a single snake can be spotted near the temple.

Garudan Kavu is also special for the rare prasadam given to devotees. The yellow nivedyam is not given in any of the other temples in Kerala. The chief ingredient, turmeric has great healing properties. It’s given to devotees for the wellbeing of the whole family.

Garuda Panchakshari oil is another prasadam. The oil is anointed all over to rid devotees of skin ailments. When consumed continuously for 12 days, the body becomes free of internal poisons and toxins.

The only one Garuda Temple in Kerala it is in Triprangode on Chamravattom Road near Thirur of Malappuram district. The temple is known as Vellamassery Garudan Kavu Temple . Close to this one lies a Mahavishnu temple where the deity is in Koorma avatar. It is said it is the only Garuda temple in India in his flying form in this country .

The temple complex was initially small but was later expanded substantially. The sannidhis of Sankara Narayana and Lord Shiv which faces the direction east were built later. On the left of Lord Garuda, deities such as Veettekkaran and Kartha Veeryarjunan are found. Deities like Vishnu and Sankara Narayanan have separate Namaskara Mandapa. The shrine of Lord Vishnu has a balippura to its south. The shrines of Sri Sastha, Devi Bhagavathy, Lord Ganapthy and Devi Bhadra Kali are found in the western direction. The shrine has a gopuram at the west and a deepasthambham within. A large temple pond is situated south of this temple. Daily pooja for the deities are performed here.

The temple doesn’t impose restrictions on the devotees visiting the temple, unlike many other temples of this region and is open to everyone. Thereby the temple signifies that it doesn’t discriminate people based on any criteria like caste, creed, color, gender, etc, just like the Garuda that flies high above in the skies over everyone without any discrimination.

In order to obtain immunity from snake bite, the devotees offer snakes for the Garuda. This is because the snakes are known to be the natural food for the Garuda (eagle). This ritual involves the throwing of hundreds of snakes kept on earthenware pots from the Gopuram by the devotees. The snakes are unhurt and alive when they land.Since this snake offering ritual is in practice for several centuries now, it is obvious that this region should have been thickly infested with snakes, while hardly any snakes are visible here. There has not been a single instance of snake bite, despite the presence of many snakes in the region, not even when being carried by devotees during this ritual. Thus, this stands as a proof to the divine power of this temple and its deity.

The Mandala period falling between mid November to mid December, is considered the most significant period of worship in this temple. The 12th and 13th day of the Malayalam month ‘Dhanu’ is regarded auspicious. The Garuda Temple, Triprangode, serves as a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of Kerala and continues to be a place of devotion and reverence for Hindus in the region.
